TAKING A LooK bACK AT 2015

Stories of club and group launches, personal successes and innovative ideas were told during a year of your Community Magazine. The fi rst magazine of the year highlighted a new group for men called Men Behaving Dadly. Matthew Edmonds created the monthly meet up for dads and their pre-school kids at Allander Evangelical Church. In February, we reported on another newly launched group, the Supper Troupers and Trippers (STaT). A news item also revealed the winter fun – and mud – of Glasgow Mountain Bike Club, which rides out from Milngavie and Bearsden Sports Club. In March, we fi rst heard about the launch of a Making the Most of Milngavie survey when Callum

Christie called for “interesting and practical” ideas. Mugdock Country Cycles also opened for business. April brought an announcement of the Mugstock Festival. It was the dream of Alan Govan and he asked locals for help. May’s magazine revealed three local people pushing their limits for charity, including Clayton Cumming, who was taking part in the Glasgow KiltWalk; Jamie Aarons, who hoped to race a quadrathlon; and Stewart McAulay, who would climb Kilimanjaro. MAKE A NoTE: JoIN bMyo ROOFING CLADDING GUTTERS GREAT SOUNDS: The Bearsden & Milngavie Youth Orchestra is a very friendly and inclusive place for children to come along to enjoy playing an instrument

Budding young musicians can start the New Year on a high note by joining long-standing Bearsden & Milngavie Youth Orchestra. Flat Roofs • Lead Work Roughcasting • Tiling Downpipes • uPVC Fascias EST 1983

0141 956 2666 info@prime-roofing.co.uk

As the local orchestra celebrates its 40th year, children are being encouraged to come along to play. There are four sections to choose from: String Orchestra for younger string players; Wind Band for younger to intermediate wind and brass players; Concert Orchestra for intermediate string players; and the full Symphony Orchestra. Started in 1976 by violin teacher

Anna Moffat, the aim of BMYO is to give the opportunity for children to play as part of a full orchestra, but without the stress of having to audition. There are only a few requirements for children before joining. They need to be aged eight and have a year’s experience of playing their instrument or can play to grade one level.

Currently, there are just over 100 members in the orchestra although there is capacity for up to 150 children. BMYO perform a number of concerts each year. Susan McEwan, BMYO secretary, says: “The orchestra is a very friendly and inclusive place for children to come along to enjoy playing an instrument. We ask for some experience of playing purely to ensure the children don’t feel overwhelmed. “This month is a great time for children to join us because we begin rehearsing new material for the Easter concert.” Susan adds: “It is a great orchestra to be a part of and we are immensely proud of the children who work hard to make our shows a pleasure.” BMYO is run by the parents of members. The fi rst two sessions in 2016 are on January 7 and 14 at 7pm at Boclair Academy, Bearsden. After that, the orchestra reverts to its normal meeting place at Douglas Academy, Milngavie. New members can turn up on the night or fi nd out more at BMYO.org.uk.

members became the Scottish Senior Singles Champion to add to the gent’s Senior Fours Scottish Championship in previous years.

Members play a league system from Monday to Friday, starting at 10am until 6.30pm. A game lasts for two hours and teams comprise three of four players.

“However, not all members seek serious competitive matches and AIBC provides friendship and fun from the game, notably on Thursdays and Fridays and on Saturday evenings.”

From January to April, AIBC competes in the Glasgow and District Indoor Bowling Association leagues for both male and female players, as well as a mixed knock-out competition.

James adds: “The game of bowls keeps the mind active and provides good exercise for players. We would like to see new people joining us in 2016.”

Here we are again. January. Christmas is over and it’s time to lose weight. For most people it’s about appearance, avoiding moving up a clothes size. However there is a more serious issue. Overweight and obesity are recognised as the biggest health challenges facing the country, and it’s a growing problem...if you’ll pardon the pun! In 2014 63% of Scots were overweight or obese. Worldwide obesity has more than doubled since 1980, with 600 million obese people worldwide. Shockingly, it is linked to more deaths worldwide than starvation. Only last month warnings were issued to obese women about the risks of miscarriage and premature birth in pregnancy. We are running up a huge bill with the NHS as a result of the impact of these diseases. Yet it is an easily preventable condition. The World Health Organisation recommends two things. Exercise more and eat less. People should limit energy (calorie) intake from fats and sugars, eat more fruit and vegetables and exercise for at least 150 minutes per week. Easier said than done? If at first you don’t succeed....!

If New Year’s resolutions sometimes seem a bit empty why not join the 2016 campaign of Bearsden & Milngavie Fair Trade Group? This year, the group hopes to focus more on educating people in the local area about “why Fair Trade is so important. Sue Milne is a founding member and volunteer with the group, which recently heard that the Fair Trade Town status had been renewed for both Bearsden and Milngavie. She explains:

“We’ve done a lot of work behind the scenes to gain the Fair Trade status for both communities. This involves, among other things, proving that businesses stock and use Fair Trade products. There’s also an educational side to our campaigning, to increase awareness of the products and to get people to buy them in preference to others. This has been successful in many ways. For example, Sue tells of the children who come along to the Fair Trade events and immediately recognise the logo. She adds: “From nursery school age they know about Fair Trade and tell their parents to make Fair Trade choices. This is fantastic. Yet the group also wants to bring a wider understanding about why buying Fair Trade is

Al-Anon

benefi cial. Sue says: “Consumers locally are choosing more Fair Trade products but they might not know why this is a good thing. Fair Trade helps people who are seriously disadvantaged in developing to achieve better futures and to overcome exploitation. Fair Trade states: “Its is about better prices, decent working conditions and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers. It’s about supporting the development of thriving farming and worker communities that have more control over their futures. Look out for local events as part of Fair Trade Fortnight (February 29 to March 13), including a Sit Down Breakfast. Household Tips Legal Matters WalNUT TO THE RESCUE The Christmas season is a now a faint memory but through all the hustle and bustle your furniture can take a few scuffs and scrapes. If you do find your darkwood dining table has taken on a few marks rub a walnut on it. Should fix the offending blemish...

Tickets for the concert, which is supported by the Tunnell Trust, cost £12. School pupils can enter the event for free. See www. milngaviemusic.org

This month: KEEPING IT CIVIL... Deciding to end a relationship can be an extremely difficult decision and the subsequent raising of a divorce can be overwhelming. In Scotland, we benefit from the simplified Divorce Procedure, also referred to as a DIY Divorce. The simplified/do it yourself procedure is a useful tool but can only be used in certain circumstances. The grounds for divorce can be based on the fact that you have been separated for one year and your spouse consents to the divorce, two years separation or that either your or your spouse have been issued an interim gender recognition certificate. There must be no children

of the marriage under the age of 16 and there can be no outstanding financial matters. Any financial arrangements can separately be agreed by way of a Minute of Agreement. You will also have to confirm on the application that you and your spouse are able to manage your own affairs and are not suffering from a mental illness or learning disability. The benefits of using this procedure are that parties do not require to attend court and it is cost effective. The fee for lodging an application with the court is currently £111 and there is a fee exemption for those on certain benefits.

Happy New Year to all our readers and we hope you all have a great 2016. We are looking forward to bringing you our monthly magazines, fi lled with news and stories about local people, groups, clubs, activities and businesses. We are always happy to hear from people who have news and information about our local communities. Perhaps your group is keen to recruit for new members, or you have set up a new club or a club member has won an award.

Senior Savvy with Suhail Rehman

This month: Make 2016 a good one... The New Year is now in full swing and hopefully your resolutions are too. Many of you may be trying to keep active, save more money or spend more time with loved ones, but one resolution we can all make is to stay healthy and safe at home. Your home is where you should feel most secure and now is the perfect time to carry out a few quick checks: Here are some top tips for safeguarding you and your home: 1. Change the battery in all of your smoke alarms and set yourself a reminder to then check they are working properly once a week.

potentially having the code, there are a few people who could get to know your code through the year. Therefore by changing the code every January, it will reduce the risk of unauthorised people getting their hands on your keys. 3. It’s always handy to have a list of any medication you take with your doctors contact details on display where someone can easily fi nd it in case of an emergency. Falls are the most common accident to occur within the home; so to lessen the risk of trips and slips, make sure to get any loose carpets or rugs fi xed and keep fl oor space clutter free.

In particular, we like to write about great human interest stories so please don’t be shy with your news.

2. Many of you may have a keysafe at home. With cleaners, care staff, doctors and delivery men all

JoAN’S hAPPy SCRIbbLINGS A life-long enjoyment of “scribbling things down” led to Joan Fleming becoming a published author in her retirement. To date, the Milngavie author has penned two novels and is now working on the third in her romantic fi ction series entitled The Magic of Mull. Joan’s fi rst novel, What the Future Holds, was e-published by Tirgearr Publishing in July 2014. It was shortlisted for the Joan Hessayon Award of the Romantic Novelists’ Association in 2015.

Bearsden Academy – and has lived in the area for 40 years. She says: “Ever since I was young I’ve written stories. I’ve also entered short story competitions and was encouraged, when my own children were young, by good feedback from the magazine, the People’s Friend.”

Her second book, Spirit of the Island, was e-published in November and has received good reviews with fi ve-star ratings on Amazon. Joan was formerly a teacher of modern languages – for some years at

Joan had entered a story competition with the Dundeebased magazine and although she did not win the editor visited her in Glasgow to offer tips on becoming a published writer.

Unfortunately, a busy family and work life got in the way of Joan’s writing hobby and only when she took early retirement did she focus again on writing. Joan joined the Erskine Writers and took the lead from other people in the group who were already published. Joan says: “I love writing. I enjoy the process of it and I rarely struggle with the discipline required to write daily.” The Magic of Mull series was originally inspired by Joan’s late husband’s connection with the Scottish island. Joan says: “My husband spent a lot of time visiting Mull as a child and when we married we continued to holiday on the island. I have always loved the place.” See www.tirgearrpublishing. commore

Business sparks:

15% OFF Scottoiler Sport Solutions Ltd

A local company has developed an innovative product that looks set to become a game changer in the competitive cycling world.

PRESSURE WASHING

Scottoiler Sport Solutions Ltd, a sister company of longestablished Milngavie-based Scottoiler, is behind the CYCLE S1, the first fully automatic chain lube system for bikes. The system attaches to a bike and takes over the chain maintenance process, automatically delivering the exact quantity of fresh lubricant on to the chain exactly when required. Scottoiler Sports also makes an award-winning lubricant, Ultimate Bike Solution, which has been selling successfully for a few years.

01436 679994 www.nightanddaycleaning.co.uk

Nick Muddle, sales director for the company, says: “The affects of lubricant on a bike chain might seem a small part of the overall picture of riding a bike but if you can obtain perfect lubrication at all times you will increase efficiency and maximise

performance. We have been doing lab and environmental tests with Napier University. The results are fantastic.” The tests have concluded that cyclists can expect to see a gain of up to 12W in performance and a saving of six minutes and 58 seconds over a cycling distance of 160kms. In addition, ensuring that a bike chain is properly lubricated lengthens the chain life and gives smoother gear changes. Nick believes the new system will be attractive to enthusiastic amateur cyclists and professional riders alike. He says: “Riders will always be looking for that next thing – a product that is evidenced as offering performance advantages. We are hopeful that it will be something that the pro teams will be keen to try. I don’t think it would be unrealistic to see the system being

used in the Tour de France in future years.” Scottoiler CYCLE S1 is currently on trial with a number of elite cyclists. It will be brought to market later this year. See www.scottoiler.com/cycle/ and www.ultimatebikesolution.com
