It raised more than 8,000 Euros for local charities, a record for the annual Burns celebration there, and was a stunning success. Later Colin quipped that this was a second prestigious date in a matter of days, as earlier he’d done the Burns honours at Helensburgh Golf Club.

PIPING: Well-established local piper, Colin Lawrie, recently performed at a Burns Event in a Lithuanian palace.

Veteran Dumbarton piper Colin Lawrie was the star turn at one of this year’s most prestigious Burns events – in a Lithuanian palace. He is no stranger to high profile appearances outside Scotland, having already performed to delighted audiences in places such as Helsinki and Prague. He’s also a past president of Dumbarton Rotary Club, and a largely unsung key player in a concerted effort to bring all that’s best about real Scottish traditions to people in countries whose historic links with Scotland are now increasingly being rekindled and reinforced. Colin told Dumbarton Community Advertiser: “I think this is about the farthest east I’ve played so far, and it was certainly up there with the very nicest venues – that palace is magnificent, and Vilnius is beautiful, “It has to be said, too that the dinner was magnificent, and everything a really good Burns night should be.” Colin, whose bagpipe services “one man band” is a popular choice for all sorts of functions, from weddings to funerals, also makes the point that while many toast Burns just once a year, in January, the enthusiasm in the wider world for the poet and his works – and, by extension, Scottish culture – is evident all year round.

BUILDING A NEW BALLOCH meet other residents and business owners to share ideas and suggestions. Besides looking at how to improve specific sites, for example Balloch Castle, the sessions will look at how changes can make things better for the town as a whole. BALLOCH: The partnership want to hear your opinion on how to develop the Balloch area for the betterment of its residents

This month marks the best chance for Balloch residents to get involved with a plan to improve key local sites like the town centre and riverside. The scheme is a partnership between the National Park, the local council and Scottish Enterprise, and could deliver major benefits if the hoped-for “shared vision” pays off. And the organisers are keen to see as many Community Advertiser readers as possible make their views known on just how it should be done.

The move happens at the same time as a number of other important developments that are taking place around Balloch. It also aims to find how the town can be better connected to the wider Vale of Leven and act as an economic generator for the area. Special events staged locally this month and last are said to provide a unique opportunity to

Some of the ideas already proposed in the “charrette”, as it is called, can be seen in drawings and diagrams, and the events are informal – everyone is welcome (children included), either for a whole session or just a quick visit. There are two events still to come this month, both staged at the National Park Headquarters in Carrochan Road, Balloch. The first is on Wednesday, March 8, from noon till 2pm, followed by a 7pm workshop (which will look at how to fit the ideas together, and who will be responsible for making them happen). Then on Tuesday, March 22, you can study the various proposals that have emerged from the process at an exhibition running from noon till 7pm.

EGG HUNT: The beautiful setting of Geilston Gardens will play host to an Easter Egg Hunt.

Easter would hardly be the same without an egg hunt – and Geilston Gardens at Cardross is maybe the perfect place to stage one.

As a family day out the Gardens are a very different option to the typical trip to cinema or sports centre, with plenty to interest people of all ages, even if they’re not particularly interested in the finer points of the botanical wonders so carefully nurtured there. Easter marks the start of the Spring season, so there is plenty to see as the Gardens' team prepare to deliver a spectacular blossoming of shrubs and blooms

later in the year. The National Trust for Scotland’s garden at Geilston is around two centuries old, and a well-established star of the west coast’s botanical finest . Key features include a large walled garden, with its iconic 100-ft high Wellingtonia tree, a kitchen garden and woodland area. The

kitchen garden springs into life from next month, and visitors are able to “taste the differenceâ€? by taking an edible souvenir away with them – for example carrots, parsnips and beetroot. Meanwhile the walled garden is a riot of colour with azaleas, heathers and unusual shrubs. The site is said to be typical of the sort of classy gardens developed by wealthy merchants in times gone by, with ambitious gardeners using the ideal west coast growing condition to superb advantage – a tradition that is very obviously continued to this day by the NTS. Easter is arguably a great time to get reacquainted with all the fabulous variety of garden delights that signal the final end of winter and the return to peak growing season. This year’s egg hunt events (cost ÂŁ1 on top of normal admission) run from March 25 to 28), from 10am till 4pm each day. For more information phone 01389 849187.

One survivor of Auschwitz, a teenager at the time, has spent his life touring schools to campaign for an end to all intolerance, whether of race, religion or sexuality.

MEMORIAL: Various members of the community have united to highlight the horrors of genocide

Present-day international news events are a stark reminder that genocide isn’t ‘just history’. Meanwhile the recent annual Holocaust commemoration was no ordinary event. At a special ceremony outside the council’s Garshake Road offices in Dumbarton local pupils joined with councillors and officials to convey the simple message: “We shall never forget.” There’s now a well-established programme run by the Holocaust Educational Trust which involves sending pairs of students

to the preserved remains of the notorious Auschwitz concentration camp in Poland. Armed with the terrible knowledge of what happened there, and in many other Nazi death camps across Europe, the pupils can then give their classmates a telling insight into the hideous crimes of the early 20th century, and the background of centuries of anti-Semitism that set the stage for Hitler and

Many soldiers never realised the depths of the Nazis’ depravity while they were fighting the war, and only learned the unimaginable truth near the war’s end. The brutal crimes of the Japanese Imperial Army in China, Burma, and across the Far East also verged on genocidal during the 1930’s until 1945. The decades since have seen further mass murder, for example in Cambodia and Rwanda. Provost Douglas McAllister said: “It was an honour to welcome members of the public and guests to commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day in West Dunbartonshire. “It is vital that we learn lessons from the past to ensure a safer future, and Holocaust Memorial Day is an opportunity to start that process.”

This month is an important crossroads for people right across the spectrum, from pupils getting set to leave school in summer to people aiming to start a new career path or learn new skills to improve ones they already have. One option worth studying in detail is a course at West College Scotland, a local resource which has a range of choices including business, art, hairdressing,

engineering and hospitality. It boasts “state of the art” modern teaching areas and science labs, photography studios and well-equipped engineering and construction workshops too – and there are more than 300 full time courses starting there this August. Anyone who hasn’t been involved with further education before, or (if they left school perhaps many

But the real benefit is the variety and flexibility of the courses a modern college can offer, allowing students to make the most of their abilities. Talk to the education professionals at West College and, chances are, possibilities that hadn’t previously occurred to you may form the basis of exciting plans for the future. The website also shows examples of how students have used their college achievements to launch rewarding careers. Business administration or makeup, computer games or nursing? The choice is huge - and the opportunities well worth taking time to study in detail. You can check out what’s on offer at: www.westcollegescotland.ac.uk

WHISKY: The original Whisky Galore will be getting a showing at the Concord Community Cinema in Dumbarton

Dumbarton movie buffs have a golden opportunity to see timeless classic Whisky Galore this month – just ahead of the “remake”. The famous yarn, about the efforts of wily islanders to keep a cargo of whisky from a sunken ship, is a highlight of the new season of films at the Concord Community Cinema, and is being screened on March 18. Coincidentally actor-comedian Eddie Izzard’s take on the story (originally by Sir Compton

Mackenzie) is due to be released soon, complete with footage of local sites used in the filming – for example the Central Bar in Renton is the setting for the pub on the mythical island of Todday where much of the action (perhaps inevitably) takes place. As with previous film seasons at the Concord there are three

separate clubs open to cinema fans – classic, musicals and features – with five shows in each, charged at £10 per club. Organiser Tommy Crockett also highlights a special “Wee Look Back” session of archive footage from days gone by, while if musicals are your thing the next one showing is Meet Me in St. Louis on March 23. But a look at the full programme across all sections is enough to show there’s something on offer to interest literally everyone. The feature and classic nights are on Fridays (7.30pm), and the musicals on Wednesdays at 1.30pm, so it’s possible to enjoy a broad range of brilliant cineentertainment in the way it was meant to be seen. Tommy said: “Some of our members really are film fanatics and will try and see just about everything, and we hope this season will be at least as successful as last year’s – You can find out more about the Concord and its ambitious programme of film specials by dropping an email to concordcommunitycinema@ hotmail.com

DouBLe DeaL for GoLf CLuBs In what’s believed to be a Scottish first, Helensburgh Golf Club has teamed up with Buchanan Castle Golf Club to offer a unique double deal. Members at Helensburgh can now enjoy free golf at Buchanan Castle - and vice versa. Members will play their normal competitions at their home course but they can play the other course at no extra cost. The respective captains, Ian Irving and Gordon Yule say the tie up offers two very different golfing experiences. Helensburgh Golf Club is one of the best moorland courses anywhere in Scotland and Buchanan Castle Golf Club has a reputation as one of the best parkland courses. Members of both clubs can enjoy playing either course without restriction. Martyn Lawrie, the Helensburgh Club Secretary, said: “ The main benefit to members will be the ability to play two different types of courses while still paying their normal Helensburgh subscription with no hidden costs.

CLUB CAPTAINS: Gordon Yule and Ian Irving welcome the deal providing members with new opportunities

“This offer also extends to nonplaying members who may wish to drop into either clubhouse looking for quality catering or bar facilities, should they be in the area.

Double Value!

“The reciprocal agreement is certainly the first of its kind in the West of Scotland; if not the whole of Scotland.” Helensburgh’s Captain, Ian Irving says “As captain, I’m excited about the added benefits that this arrangement offers to our members, and demonstrates the forward thinking of both clubs. I hope that others will be encouraged to join our club. They will be made most welcome."

LUNCH CLUB AT BEN VIEW

B

en View lunch club bring older people together to enjoy a hot nutritious meal and socialise with friends at the same time. Our lunch club is open to anyone over the age of 60. We currently have over 70 members with room at our table for many more. The emphasis on the service is the social aspect, we provide a warm, caring and safe environment where people can come together to enjoy the company of others. The members enjoy nothing more than a good blether and time to spend with friends old and new. For some who come along this is the only activity they have outside their own home on a weekly basis. For others this is another fun filler for their weekly diary activities that keeps them engaged with friends, neighbours and others within their local community. The lunch club is open every day Monday to Friday. A two course lunch followed by tea and biscuits is provided along with transport to and from the Centre. The menu is varied and very tasty, the large two course meal during the day means for most people that

they only require a small snack to see them through tea time. A small charge applies to cover the cost of lunch. This service is managed by the lunch club co-ordinator, who along with her team of volunteers ensures that all the members have a positive experience from the start to finish of their time with us. An escort attends on the bus to support anyone who requires it to and from the Centre each day. In addition to lunch we offer inputs from local organisation who can provide useful information on the services available to our members. We also on occasion have bingo and movie days and from time to time bring in local entertainers to enhance the activities we offer. The feedback from our members and their families is always positive, there is a great sense of companionship and community spirit which is very valuable to the wellbeing of our members. If you have a family member or know of anyone who would benefit from this service please give us a call. Other services available with Ben View

include free personal care service available to any adult within the community who requires assistance, room hire at very affordable prices, office lease to local voluntary organisations, a youth programme offering activities to young people aged 9 – 17 and we are currently developing a befriending service for older people which will be available from August 2016. Ben View also operates an annual fundraising programme where we

rely heavily on the support from members of the local community to help us reach our annual target to ensure we can continue to offer the services we currently have in place. If you can offer any support with the fundraising or are interested in volunteering opportunities with either lunch club, admin or the youth programme then please get in touch for more information.

What's Up Doc? with Dr Nick Dunn

This month: ASTHMA ATTACKS

Luss will this month be the venue for a course designed to help groups and individuals meet First Aid health and safety requirements. Run by Love Loch Lomond, the March 24 session will train individuals to the standard required by the Health & Safety executive – and could be an ideal way for people responsible for workers or club members to ensure a safety drama never turns into a crisis. The First Aid Emergency course is the minimum level of first aid training for the workplace, and is said to be appropriate for low risk environments or for those acting in the absence of a fully qualified first aider – a “stitch in time” solution that aims to ensure there’s always someone to hand

who is qualified to deal with the sort of accident that can happen anywhere. Costing £50, the course aims to give individuals the confidence to deal with “low risk incidents”, and work towards HSE targets on the minimum number of first aiders within the workplace. The certificate awarded will be valid for three years, although resuscitation guidelines advise that everyone who gains one should go for an annual refresher update. For further details email admin@lovelochlomond.com

“Asthma attack” now describes a “flare-up” or “exacerbation” of asthma. This is designed to promote early action. I initially worried about using this term, in case it would alarm patients. Most people traditionally imagine an “asthma attack” to be very severe, requiring hospital. However I now see the sense in using the term more widely, as it may encourage people to seek help earlier and prevent them requiring emergency hospital care. Using the new definition, many asthma attacks will be managed by GPs or nurses, who can prescribe steroid tablets and review asthma treatment. There are 390,000 people in Scotland affected by asthma.

It affects the “tubes” in the lungs, causing temporary narrowing leading to cough, wheeze or breathlessness. Good control of asthma reduces long-term damage and risk of attacks, mainly through daily use of preventer (usually brown) inhalers, keeping people well. Seeking help early is key. This may be as simple as contacting the surgery for a same day appointment. The earlier an asthma attack is recognised, the simpler the solution. Ideally you should not need to use your blue reliever more than twice a week, so if you are, find out from your Practice Nurse or GP how to get better control! Check out asthma.org.uk for more info.

Wonderful weddings don't have to Everyone wants their wedding to be a perfect day and there are any number of companies, magazines and hotels dishing out advice. The search for a perfect wedding is limited only by budget. But is it? Fact of the matter is that sensible spending aligned with good taste will produce a day that everyone will enjoy just as much as an OTT splurge which leaves you without a deposit on a flat! Having a big fat wedding can feel something like a big fat financial transaction. So it's worth getting quotes from a lot of different people. Then, once you do, call in favours and get your mates involved. It's a big party and an important celebration but it's madness to put yourself in debt.

Traditional dairymaid fresh ice cream canapés in a large variety of mouthwatering flavours!

A survey reported in the Daily Mail carried out among 1,000 newly married women revealed six in ten chose aspects of their big day just to make their's better than their friends. And having great photos for social media also was listed as a big motivator, three in ten said how their wedding looked on Facebook was one of their prime wedding concerns. But surely it is meant to be a celebration not a competition? Tellingly their undercover reporter was quoted £850 for a venue for a wedding - having earlier been quoted just £200 for the same place for a reunion. It can be much simpler to start and finish locally. This area not only has some of the best venues in the country but some of the very best services to guarantee a great day. One of the most important aspects of any wedding day is selecting the right reception

Amazing

However, unlike buying a house it isn’t all location, location, location. Couples want impeccable service and attention to detail too. Because we are in an area famous for wedding venues, there are very experienced caterers and ancillary wedding services on hand. Crisp white table cloths, polished cutlery, beautifully decorated tables and, of course, extra sparkling glasses for that all-important toast have been practised and perfected many times over.

If a winter wedding is planned, the opportunity for outdoor pictures is likely to be limited, so this may swing the decision towards a venue with a deluxe interior, including dramatic features such as a sweeping staircase, feature wall or elegant fireplace. SPRING CLEAN

This month: REMINDER TO DOG OWNERS Under the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 it is already a legal requirement for dogs defined as dangerous to be microchipped. However, new legislation being introduced requires that all dogs in Scotland, England and Wales will have to be microchipped as of 6th April 2016. Your dog’s details will be registered on a database and it will be the owner’s responsibility to ensure that the details are up to date and accurate. This includes advising if your pet has passed away or been sold to a new keeper. Going forward, all new puppies will be chipped at

the time of their second vaccinations. The idea behind this is to encourage responsible ownership, deter theft and improve control over breading. Local authorities will have handheld scanners which can read the microchips instantly. This will mean all dogs should be traceable and able to be reunited with owners quickly. In the event you do not microchip your dog, then a notice may be served on you requiring you to do so within 21 days. If you choose to ignore the notice then you will be fined up to £500 or an enforcer may seize the dog and microchip it at your expense.

Group’s reD Letter Date West Dunbartonshire Tenants and Residents Organisation members will gather to discuss the way ahead in 2016 at the meeting on Thursday, March 10 at Dalmuir CE Centre (starts 7pm). Housing issues are the big story across West Dunbartonshire, and the WDTRO has become a prime mechanism to allow tenants to address the issues that affect them most. The organisation was formed in 2008, when groups in Dumbarton and the Vale teamed up to create a new umbrella group to give tenants and residents “a common front”. Eight years later the group is represented right across the area, giving thousands of people direct access to a voice willing and able to speak up on their behalf. The main aim now, as back in 2008, is to improve housing services and conditions for all

residents, with a particular focus on council and housing association tenants. A spokesperson says: “We now have a bi-monthly meeting with councillors and council officials at a very senior level to discuss ongoing housing services and to make sure that tenants concerns are prioritised.” Based at 1 Lomond Court, West Bridgend, Dumbarton the organisation has aimed to build its reputation in the tenants’ movement by participating in important Scottish Government housing consultations while also working with tenants’ groups and

federations from other areas.

• Full Training Provided

We now have a bimonthly meeting with councillors and council officials at a very senior level to discuss ongoing housing services...

• Salary Above Minimum National Wage • Mileage Paid To Drivers • Full And Part Time Positions • Hours Negotiable

CARERS

And at the start of a new business year the group is as keen to see new people getting involved as ever – with the AGM possibly as good a time as any for anyone interested to get in touch and find out how WDTRO works hard to tackle the key housing issues facing local people. For more information check out the WDRO’s website at www.wdtro.org.uk

This month saw locals welcome the success of the Scottish Apprenticeship Week promotion. We recently reported the case of an employer who went beyond the Jobcentre approach to offer what could be a serious career in landscape gardening to someone who might otherwise have struggled to gain work. Now employers across West Dunbartonshire are being urged to hire Modern Apprentices, following the campaign by Skills Development Scotland (SDS) – and to expand on last year’s success, when 545 new apprentices were taken on. As shown by the case we flagged

up in our recent article the type of jobs which can benefit from untested young talent can go far beyond traditional trades. Learning a niche skill from the ground up can give a local company someone committed to success. Stewart Rennie, President of Dunbartonshire Chamber of Commerce, said: “There are more than 80 different types of Modern Apprenticeship available and more than 25,000 new starts each year. “Apprenticeships cover a huge

“Employers can post vacancies free on the website – www. apprenticeships.scot .” Skills Development Scotland pays a contribution towards the cost of training Modern Apprentices on behalf of the Scottish Government. It’s a bid to give firms a small but significant incentive to make an investment in keen and able young workers of tomorrow.

TO LET

A light at end of Tunnel Dumbarton travellers who use Edinburgh – Helensburgh trains or Airdrie – Balloch services should check their journeys before travelling, as departure/ arrival times will be different.

This is to allow trains that normally use Queen Street High Level station to be diverted to the Low Level instead.

Trains in and around Dumbarton are set for 20 weeks of disruption from this month – but once it's over it will all be worth the trouble.

That was the promise made to local rail users as a whole catalogue of service changes were announced – along with the advice that customers should check revised train times on a ScotRail app or on its website. A £60m rail upgrading project will use the major alteration to services to renew nearly two kilometres of ageing track through Queen Street tunnel, which it says will enable “faster, greener” trains to use the network from next year.

Meantime regular rail users need to study changes taking effect from March 20 right though to August 8. Customers are also advised to check the train’s final destination, as this may be different from the train they normally catch particularly in the evening. However services at Clydebank, Garscadden, Scotstounhill and Jordanhill will reduce from four to just two trains per hour in both directions. During the tunnel closure

Changes to the Airdrie/ Cumbernauld – Balloch/Dalmuir services in the evening means that Dumbarton East and Dumbarton Central will benefit from an additional two services per hour in the evening. A ScotRail Alliance spokeswoman said: “This will mean more seats, shorter journey times and less impact on our environment. “The long term benefits will be considerable, not just for our railway, but also for the country.” A dedicated webpage (www. scotrail.co.uk/QueenStreetTunnel) carries more information and maps. Customers can check their own journey online now, and full timetables are available to downloaded.

treK in memorY of franK we then canoe to Tarbet (7 miles) to finally disembark and return to our bikes to cycle the remaining 19 miles back to CHAS. This is done in one day.

TREKKERS: Members of the Police Scoland Mountain Rescue team undertake a charity Trek for CHAS in memory of Frank Leitch

Every year since 2006 members of the Police Scotland mountain rescue team have undertaken their own fundraising venture for CHAS in the memory of Frank Leitch. An ex-police officer and mountain rescue team member, Frank, who was from Helensburgh and who served in Alexandria, passed away in 2006 at the Beatson unit less than two years after retiring from the police. His colleague Dave Watson says: “In his memory, members of the mountain rescue team devised a fundraising venture we call The

Loch Lomond Challenge. “This is a circumnavigation of the loch by cycling, running and canoeing. We start at CHAS (Children’s Hospice Association Scotland), Balloch and cycle to Rowardennan (17 miles), where after a short break we run along the West Highland Way to Ardleish (13 miles), get taken across the loch to Ardlui where

“This year is the tenth year it has been running and it is on Sunday 24 April. I’d like to take this opportunity to appeal for anyone who would like to sponsor me and the team. As usual we provide our own logistical support which means all the cash we raise goes to CHAS.

POLISHING

“ Over the years we have raised in the region of £22,000 for CHAS and £2,200 for The Beatson. Donations can be made at Helensburgh and Dumbarton Police Offi ces but please make sure they are clearly marked for PC Dave Watson, L518, based at Alexandria and please leave a note to say who the donation is from. Also direct via . https:// www.justgiving.com/DaveWatson10 Dave adds if anyone would like any information on the Police Scotland Mountain Rescue Team please contact him via the police non-emergency number 101.

L-R: Councillor David McBride (Convener of Housing and Communities), Liz Ruine (Cube Chair), Jackie Barnes (Cube Board Member) and Richard Cairns (Executive Director of Infrastructure and Regeneration)

Everyone knows about the housing crisis, which can make it difficult for too many young families to put down roots in local communities where affordable homes are at a premium. It’s bad news for an area like West Dunbartonshire, because to prosper the area needs a steady influx of people of all kinds – bus drivers and nurses, bank clerks and shop staff – to bolster the local economy and give meaning to the idea of community. However according to the council that depressing picture is set to undergo an important change for the better. It claims its drive to deliver

hundreds of affordable new homes as part of a partnership with housing provider Wheatley Group is going from strength to strength. When the ten-year partnership was agreed less than two years ago the plan was to create 323 new properties. A quarter of these new homes have now been built, with the programme said to be well ahead of schedule – a total of 520 homes

Housing and communities convener Councillor David McBride said: “This partnership, working alongside the council’s significant investment in new housing stock is transforming the properties which are available in the area. “These developments are generating much-needed construction jobs, training places and apprenticeships.” He says that as an added benefit the council will eventually gain extra council tax revenue of around £500,000 a year from the new properties. David Fletcher, Director of Regeneration at Wheatley Group, said: “Increasing the supply of quality, affordable homes is a key focus for us over the next five years. “We are delighted our partnership with West Dunbartonshire Council will not only deliver much-needed new homes in our communities, but will also see hundreds of jobs and training opportunities for local people over the next five years.”
