pRoud daY foR LocaL heRo community spirit to the important job of helping people who have served their country in good times and bad.
Veterans Association (based in the AAVA Hall in Alexander Street, Alexandria), many former forces personnel fit easily within that category but neither get nor expect any recognition. On the contrary some face a battle trying to make sense of benefits legislation, and other modern-day problems they didn’t encounter during the very worst of their armed services experience.
LOCAL HERO: George MacPherson of the local forces veterans association with Carole Smilie.
A recent TV series celebrating Scotland’s real community heroes has given a lift to a valued local forces veterans’ association – courtesy of celebrity Carol Smillie. In the frame for awards were people who have gone out of their way to do something remarkable for other people, like the Lanarkshire hairdresser who
pulled victims from a burning car after an accident. Like George MacPherson, pictured with Carol, the members of the Alexandria Armed
AAVA chairman John Brown said: “It is good to see George raising the profile for veterans all across Scotland, and although the Coming Home Centre did not win to get to the finals is a huge achievement for all veterans.” The group’s local community development worker, another exforces veteran, is Alan Deans, who is glad to have a redoubtable campaigner like George gunning for his ex-forces mates – whether they’ve been in recent conflicts or served in far-off theatres like 50’s Korea or Malaya.
Besides being an active member of the Alexandria association George is a strong supporter of the Coming Home Centre in Govan, and has again helped to raise its profile even although it didn’t get an award on the night – because a nomination for such a prestigious accolade means it is now definitely in the frame for another shot at national recognition in future. Carol Smillie was delighted to chat with the local activist about the work carried out by the causes George supports so capably, and he was happy to fly the flag for a resource he believes in so strongly. It aims to bring comradeship and
He said: “George is a real character, and epitomises the character of a veteran, always reliable and willing to help out, putting others first.” We hope to have more about the objectives of this hard-working local cause in future isues, but anyone wishing to find out how it operates – and who it helps – can contact John Brown at the AAVA Hall on 01389-757016.

Next month sees the return to Luss of the bluebonneted warriors and kilted Highlanders who created such a stir last year. In what could become a colourful annual fixture amateur warriors from all over the UK will descend on the village for an actionpacked weekend full of pikes, matchlock muskets, dirks and broadswords. The event, proudly flagged up by international Clan Colquhoun, aims to serve as a potent reminder of the days when Scotland played a pivotal role in

the British Civil Wars of the 17th century. The Lennox was the bloody battleground for contending Royalist and Covenanter armies, in a fratricidal conflict in which – as a reminder of the madness of sectarianism, then and now – religion and “tribal” politics combined to devastating effect. However at the safe range of almost four centuries we can
enjoy catching a glimpse of how people lived, fought and died in the days when the bonny banks formed the wild and disputed borderlands of a kingdom in turmoil. This year’s event is on March 26 and 27 (full details available around now at www. clancolquhoun.com/news-events/ clan-events) and is guaranteed to be an eye-popping demonstration of warfare in the days of the legendary James Graham, Marquis of Montrose, and his inveterate Covenanter enemies. It also effectively marks the start of a new tourism season at Luss, with the battle beginning – quite literally with a bang – what could go down in history as a landmark year for the village and the wider area around the National Park. Last year we reported on special events ranging from the world class Highland Games to lochside food spectaculars, not to mention the wildlife and other attractions which combine to make the area a brilliant exemplar of Scotland’s finest assets. We’ll have much more on this and other events in future editions.

It might not be as grandiose as Hadrian’s Wall, but the turf-built ultimate frontier of the Roman Empire – which stopped at West Dunbartonshire – is a major heritage asset. And thanks in part to local history activists the local section of the Antonine Wall is to receive a £10,000 Sharing Heritage grant from the Lottery fund. Apart from sprucing up the fading but still visible traces of a fortified line abandoned nearly two thousand years ago the new initiative aims to show the next generation of young learners what a fascinating historic legacy they have on their doorsteps.

The Antonine Wall is one of only six UNESCO World Heritage Sites within Scotland and is of huge historic importance, nationally and internationally.
Provost Douglas McAllister said: “It is particularly pleasing that in addition to the council’s contribution to this project, we have worked with two external funders to secure the necessary grants which will help to protect this amazing asset.

It is important that we celebrate this significant historical site and continue to recognise the huge importance of the Wall... Lucy Casot, Head of Heritage Lottery Fund Scotland, said: “West Dunbartonshire’s ‘Antonine Wall – Enhancing our Heritage’ project is a fine example of HLF’s Sharing Heritage programme that, thanks to National Lottery players, makes it possible for local people to choose what is important to them, what they want to save, and how they want to spread the word throughout their community. Residents interested in finding out more information about the project, or who would like to get involved, should contact Alison O'Kane on 0141 951 7935 or email Alison.O’Kane@westdunbarton.gov.uk.

GREAT SWIM: Loch Lomond will play host to the Great Scottish Swim which will attract 100 participants.
The cold, dark waters of Loch Lomond don’t look an inviting prospect to any but the hardiest swimmers at this time of year – and the water isn’t warm even in summer. But the loch’s already massive reputation as a key outdoor sports venue is about to take a giant leap forward with news of a major new event set to take place later this year. On previous form the already strong field of local entrants will be even larger this time around,
because the Great Scottish Swim is being staged across a whopping ten kilometres this time around. But – and here’s the reason for talking up an August event in chilly February – the August 26 and 27 spectacular is limited to just 100 participants. Obviously this is no ordinary race,
There will be a stop after each of four laps (of a 2.5k course) for a five minute breather, and drinking water if needed. The entry fee also includes a complimentary 2016 Great Swim towel, a Great Scottish Swim 10k badge, a finisher’s pack and a medal.

For the hardy band able to finish the course the swim will take some time under four hours – a premier league swimming challenge if ever there was one. OFFERING LOVE AND CARE WHEN YOU’RE NOT THERE Doggy Carers: a family business offering professional dog and cat sitting, dog walking, and dog home boarding. We were born out of our love for animals and horror of seeing our own pets left alone and scared in kennels and catteries whenever we had to go away and leave them. At Doggy Carers, we understand how difficult it is to leave our furry family members behind and how important it is to ensure they are well-loved, cared for and happy. We offer home boarding at competitive prices in our warm, clean and loving home, where your dog will be treated with love and affection; or, if you prefer, we can help you out with our professional dog walking service or pet home visit
service, looking after your pet in your own house when you’re not there. We guarantee that your dog will never be walked with more than two other dogs per dog walker. At Doggy Carers we know that our canine friends need individual care and attention and that, in order to fully enjoy the walks that they so much look forward to, they need space and freedom to explore exciting new places and smells! For local people of the wartime generation the scenes which followed the Nazis’ attempt to destroy Clyde shipbuilding are still vivid ones.
subject of next month’s Drymen and District Local History Society meeting, when speaker Geoffrey Stell, a military defence expert and author, will be shedding light on the triumphs and tragedies which stemmed from the area’s enviable but dangerous reputation as a world class shipbuilding resource.
The effects of the Clydebank Blitz were felt in Dumbarton and all the way to Helensburgh – where shocked, often grief-stricken and homeless refugees packed a beach more usually associated with peacetime summer day-trippers. They were the bewildered survivors of the same misery heaped on civilians across Europe by a dictator who, in this case, knew only too well that the key to Britain’s continued survival lay in its seapower.
There are cryptic reminders of those deadly times in the fading remains of anti-aircraft batteries once hidden in locations including Ardencaple Wood (Helensburgh), Cardross and Kilcreggan.
But the Luftwaffe’s attempt to pulverise the spirit of Clydeside into ruins, along with its buildings, was ultimately a murderous failure – and the Clyde remained a major asset to Britain’s crucial war at sea. The defence of the Clyde from

But while the submarine base at Faslane remains as a potent reminder of the importance of the Clyde’s strategic position, past and present, much of the detail from these dark days of the early 20th century isn’t generally known. Mr Stell’s talk is in Drymen Village Hall on March 24 at 7.45pm, with a £2 admission charge for a single meeting. PIVOTAL YEAR FOR PARK
LHGS SECURITY MONITORED ALARM SECURITY SYSTEMS
FOR DOMESTIC & SMALL BUSINESS
DEMOS AVAILABLE
Next month we’re likely to find out whether tough new restrictions on “wild camping” in the National Park will finally be approved. But the sometimes bitter argument over what should be done to cure the area’s flagship attraction of filthy campsites, litter and outright vandalism will definitely continue long into the summer. That’s because while on the one hand the people trying to run the park successfully insist there’s an urgent need for legislation (awaiting approval or refusal by the Scottish Government, at time of going to press) there’s an impassioned lobby which argues prohibitive laws could criminalise many perfectly reasonable people.
Anyone interested in the cut and thrust of the debate can follow it in regular online news coverage, but one thing is beyond dispute – besides the thousands who flock annually from the greater Glasgow area and far beyond will be many local people, and sports organisations, who aren’t fully aware of what’s intended. It has been claimed that even if vandals and litter louts are just a small proportion of those who visit the damage they can cause is out of all proportion to their numbers – and ultimately ruins things for everyone else. But against that opponents
say the proposed controls would be at odds with the Scottish Parliament’s Land Reform Act 2003. It’s proposed to ban camping over large areas more than a kilometre from roads, and covers routes used regularly by outdoor enthusiasts such as walkers and cyclists. Meanwhile the organisers of numerous summer events in and beside the loch – covering everything from sports to quality food - will be waiting with interest to see what emerges from the battle of opposing ideas. We’ll have more in future issues on what could be shaping up as a radically new regime on park usage.

Could a hulking great six-tonne medieval cannon hold the key to the future of Dumbarton Castle’s tourism appeal? Leven could be all lit up
What's Up Doc? with Dr Nick Dunn
This month: FUELLING UP...
Historic Dumbarton Bridge that straddles the River Leven could soon be treated to its own special night-time illuminations. Fired with enthusiasm by the lighting at Edinburgh Castle, which creates an after-dark spectacle in the heart of the capital, the council last year looked at ways of lighting up our local equivalent – Dumbarton Rock.
MacLean Electrical has been the main supplier of the energy efficient street lights since the programme got underway in 2014, and has now offered to work with Philips Lighting to install a lighting system for the bridge.
Now Dumbarton Bridge is in the frame, and depending on planning approval – and approval from Historic Scotland – the famous structure could be given its new look later this year.
The prospect is being talked up as being set to look “really spectacular” – and a useful spinoff from a contract designed to bring some real benefit to the area.
The bridge illumination is said to be a free community benefit from the council’s contract to install16,000 LED energy efficient street lights across the area.
Dumbarton Bridge was originally built over the River Leven in 1765, widened in 1884, then reconfigured in 1934 when the Balustrade was added.
We are what we eat ... and drink! Last month the first new guidance in 20 years was issued, stating that no amount of alcohol is safe. The maximum intake for men has been reduced to 14 units per week. To put this into perspective this is equivalent to 8 bottles of Becks or 7 glasses of wine. That is per week - not per night! The main reason for the new advice was increased risks of certain cancers. However alcohol is linked to other medical problems such as heart disease, obesity, and mood problems and giving people more information

about its impact is hoped to counter the “alcohol culture” in Scotland. Moves are afoot to put a “sugar tax” on unhealthy foods, and adding vitamins to more foods. Recognising the impact of what we eat and drink on our health is obvious but can sometimes be neglected in the busy lives that we lead. Freshly prepared food with a balance of fresh meat or fish with vegetables and fruit is recognised as the first step in eating well and avoiding illness. We wouldn’t put the wrong petrol or oil in our cars so why not give our bodies the fuel they need!

One of the area’s most ambitious modelling clubs is gearing up for an auction with a difference next month – because it’s all about aircraft. Dumbarton and District Model Aircraft Club members use a flying field on the Carman Moor between Cardross and Renton, where passers-by can see anything – in glorious flight - from the famous Supermarine Spitfire of Battle of Britain fame (pictured) to a galaxy of civilian aircraft past and present.

On March 16 at Dumbarton FC Stadium the club will be hosting a bring and buy sale where fans of flying model aircraft from all over the country will descend to snap up radio control equipment and the designs and raw material needed for their superblydetailed machines. It’s reckoned to be the biggest
event of its kind in the country for this niche but fascinating hobby – the highlight will be an auction and will be a melting pot of ideas for experts keen to learn about new developments and ideas about radio-controlled models. But for anyone completely unfamiliar with flying model aeroplanes the best way to learn more is probably a visit to the flying field on Sunday afternoons and Wednesday evenings – ideally in the summer, but if it’s dry there’s usually some model aviators around in any season. New members are welcome, and the club’s experienced pilots will be only too happy to teach you the art of virtual flying – and, perhaps, rekindle some of the youthful enthusiasm you may have had for model aircraft. This month (February 17) the club organised a new model night at Dumbarton’s Brock Bowling Club, representing another opportunity – this time indoors – to see at close hand what the world of miniature flight is all about. There’s more information about the club and its activities at www.dadmac.org.uk

CANCER CHARITY’S AID BID It will aim to give local residents a handy and also friendly access point for useful information about everything from benefits to complementary therapies and counseling, and comes as an addition to the existing West Dunbartonshire Macmillan Volunteers Service. LEFT TO RIGHT: Councillor Gail Casey, John Rushton, Helen Shearer and Councillor John Mooney welcome the new partnership
Local libraries will soon be a likely first port of call for cancer patients as they struggle to deal with benefits red tape and other difficulties. In a new partnership with Macmillan Cancer Support just under a quarter of a million pounds will be used to fund dropin sessions at the area’s three largest libraries – along with permanent info points in all eight branches in months to come. The move was announced at the beginning of the year, but is set to take effect within the next month or so.
The free, confidential drop-in services, which will be available at Dumbarton, Alexandria and Clydebank libraries will be delivered by trained Macmillan volunteers who can offer a listening ear, emotional support and information. The service will be available to anyone diagnosed with cancer, and also to their relatives, carers and friends.
Helen Shearer, Macmillan Services Coordinator for West Dunbartonshire, said: “A cancer diagnosis brings with it all kinds of questions and uncertainty for patients, their families and friends. “Being able to access information and emotional support at this stressful time is vital and we know from the success of similar services in libraries that people appreciate local easily accessible services. “It is thanks to the hard work and dedication of our supporters in West Dunbartonshire who raise so much money for us that we are able to introduce such a vital service.” She added: “Macmillan believes that no one should face cancer alone and the continued support from people locally will help us to ensure that no one does.”

Valentines day really is That day is fast approaching where you run to your front door on hearing the post drop.
Valentine gifts of chocolate, the occasional glass of wine, and expressions of love could not only make your heart go pitter-patter in romantic fashion, they could also lead to better heart health. Experts do not always agree but most concede that a lot of love and a little of the others will probably do more good than harm. There's no doubt chocolate can contribute to weight gain and tooth decay, but now researchers are finding it can do good things for the body as well. "It seems a component in cocoa, flavonoids, can be heart healthful," says Susan Moores, RD, a spokeswoman for the

American Dietetic Association (ADA). She says flavonoids are antioxidants, known to protect against free radicals in the body. This antioxidant effect is apparently greater in dark chocolate, because it has more cocoa beans, a natural source of flavonoids.” Wining and dining has long been a Valentine's Day tradition for sweethearts and among other studies the Mayo Clinic did say: “Red wine, in moderation, has long been thought of as heart healthy. good for your health substances in red wine called antioxidants may help prevent heart disease by increasing levels of "good" cholesterol and protecting against artery damage.” Just quoting, but remember all the health professionals warn against excessive drinking. How about love improving heart health? "The evidence is very strong that good relationships have health benefits," says Blair Justice, PhD, professor emeritus of psychology at the University of Texas School of Public Health. According to Justice, various investigators have looked
into different types of relationships, marriage, family, and friendship, and have shown that love’s protective effect against heart disease has been tested in several settings. One theory explaining love's effect on physical health involves human nature. "It's instinctual to have this need for touching and talking," says Justice. He says the personal contact turns on a part of the nervous system, which has a calming effect, and allows for a smaller amount of stress chemicals in the body. Well we always knew it was nice, now we know it is health giving too. So let’s enjoy the nonsense that is 14 February, whether we are in a romantic relationship or not, by eating a little chocolate, smelling the roses, sipping a glass of wine and remembering whatever it is that makes us smile can’t be all bad.

The area’s most talented Highland dancers are getting ready for a major annual dance competition in Alexandria this month (February 27). Alexandria Community Centre is the venue for the 16th Annual Highland Dancing Competition, a celebration of traditional skills as much as a contest whose popularity continues to grow year on year. If you have seen some of the local dancers in action at one or more of the area’s Highland Games spectaculars you’ll have an inkling of the sort of talent and commitment involved in this demanding test of skill. For more details contact the organiser at sandra.colraine@ west-dunbarton.gov.uk
It is often a misconception of cohabiting couples that they are protected by the rules of common law marriage. Unfortunately, there is no such thing in Scotland, no matter how long you have lived together. It is, however, possible for individuals to make a financial claim following the end of a cohabiting relationship, caused either by separation or death. The Family Law (Scotland) Act 2006 makes certain provisions for this under S.28 and S.29. If you are able to show that you have suffered an economic disadvantage and that this has been in the interests of your partner or children, including children accepted as being part of the family, then you may be entitled to seek a capital sum payment. The court will consider whether

your partner has gained any economic advantage as a result of contributions made by you. Contributions can be non-financial, such as bringing up children, allowing your partner to progress their own business or career. The court may also take into consideration the future economic burden of caring for any children. A claim of this type must be made within one year and a day after the date of separation. There is also provision for circumstances where a partner dies without leaving a will. However, the time limit for a claim of this type is only six months from the date of death. Although of some assistance, this legislation does not put cohabitants on an equal footing with married couples and does not allow any claim for aliment.

spRing feast at the Loch recipe for what’s already a major local annual crowd-puller.
SPRINGFEST: This year's Springfest will offer a great array of stalls from chefs, producers , restaurants and more
It’s been a long, miserable winter, but we’re now only a matter weeks away from the first big springtime attraction of the season. Springfest at Lomond Shores was an unqualified success last year, attracting people from all over the area and beyond. Now planning is well advanced for this year’s spectacular, and a still better line-up of chefs,
special events and entertainment is planned for the two-day spectacular on April 2 and 3. It’s only the second of its kind, but has already garnered support from top food providers across Scotland, thanks to the flagship
venue and the area’s already booming reputation as a prime source of Scottish culinary expertise and fine fare at its most exciting. Nobody is going to notice any April showers at this celebration of all that’s excellent about the area’s finest produce, because on past form the cookery demonstrations and food stalls, music and games will again be a
Best of all it’s a family day which has plenty to amuse younger visitors while the grown-ups consider the finer points of food you won’t find in just any high street retailer. While foodie writers tend to concentrate on the upmarket city bistros they know so well local residents don’t have to look any farther than West Dunbartonshire for cuisine fit for a king – and for added interest can enjoy meeting chefs and food producers in person. They’re the sort of people who are happy to pass on their expertise, and to discuss with fellow enthusiasts all the work and craft that goes into the production of fabulous fare. More information on the final line-up will be released shortly, but meanwhile maybe put that first weekend in April in your diary as a must-do local day out. POLISHING
DONATION: Ryanair’s Chief People Offi cer, Eddie Wilson, presented a wonderful donation of 5000 Euros to CHAS from proceeds of their on-board scratch card game
Robin House in Balloch is one of the area’s most cherished causes, and Children’s Hospice Association Scotland attracts huge support.
One man who is definitely in that category is Lockheed Martin employee Robbie Robertson, who celebrated his 60th birthday
by braving the world’s highest tandem parachute jump - along with his daughter – in the USA. He collected more than £500 from the 18.000ft stunt, and also helped to raise the profile of the charity. Still in the air, budget airline Ryanair presented 5,000 Euros to CHAS from the proceeds of the firm’s on-board scratchcard game,

But it maybe goes almost without saying that such a far-reaching and vital resource needs continual funding boosts through the year, and that some people are prepared to go the extra distance to make it happen.
and almost every week sees a similarly generous gesture from a company, individual or club. Possibly most important of all, though, is the steady stream of donations from local people who want to do anything they can to keep funds at the sort of level that allows CHAS to keep improving its impressive service at Robin House and elsewhere. Some may also be tempted to consider up and coming fundraising challenges, such as this year’s version of the exciting Rob Roy Challenge, a daunting slog over some of Scotland’s finest scenery which involves events such as a 16 mile walk and a 56 mile cycle. It isn’t until June 18, but details are being taken now, and anyone aiming to take part should probably be getting into training right away. To secure your place, email getsetgo@chas.org.uk or call Debbie on 0141 779 6182. Entries are £75 with a pledge to raise an additional £325 and CHAS can provide practical help and advice on how to manage fundraising.

AWARD: Provost Douglas McAllister presents Sister Rita Dawson with her Freeman’s Ticket.
It’s the ultimate civic honour – and arguably no surprise that there was a unanimous vote to make it happen for one well-known local figure. Sister Rita Dawson of St Margaret of Scotland Hospice is now one of just five people to receive the Freeman of West Dunbartonshire distinction, after nearly 30 years of tireless and supremely effective work on behalf of a very worthy cause. Meanwhile she has also received the prestigious MBE title from Her Majesty the Queen for her
remarkable achievement. As we reported last year Sister Rita has helped to raise the millions of pounds needed every year to keep the 58-bed hospice open, and has also overseen the construction of a second floor and the introduction of highdependency beds for the elderly, as well as a hydrotherapy pool and a hospice restaurant.

Sister Rita said after the Town Hall ceremony: “I am grateful to West Dunbartonshire Council for all their support for the Hospice and myself over the years – and for rewarding me with this recognition which I share with all those who support the Hospice and help it to continue in its work for those who need it.” Councillor Marie McNair, who proposed the motion to make Sister Rita a Freeman of West Dunbartonshire, said the award was “a fitting tribute”. She said: “Sister Rita is a remarkable woman. This award is fully deserved and long overdue. “I know from first-hand experience the high regard that the people of West Dunbartonshire have for Sister Rita Dawson, and all who work at the hospice.”

AILEEN REDISCOVERS THE TOP TIPS Reader Aileen Dorrian got in touch to tell us that our useful tips spot brought back some memories. She says: “ I’m of an age where I find myself saying “ I thought everyone knew that”. This sent me back to a little book I was introduced to at the tender age of eleven. “I went to a village school which had a separate building out the back for “Technical” on the left and “Domestic Science” on the right. I never ever entered the technical side as this was purely for boys. “There they were taught woodwork, metalwork and technical drawing. We girls went in on the right to be taught sewing (by hand. no machines in those days), knitting and cooking “We each had to buy a little blue paperback called “The Dundee Homecraft Book” with a list on the cover which said “Cookery, Laundry and Housewifery. This little book contained
everything you needed to be a housewife and had been written by a group of Dundee Domestic Science Teachers. Indeed my Granny’s copy told how to blacklead a grate. My own copy which was a reprint about 20 years ago details how to clean each room, how to sort the washing and care for each type of fabric. It has a section on Personal Hygiene and First Aid. There is even a section on how to sensibly allocate your income to the various expenses you will face. “ Aileen adds that on the cooking front it tells you basics like how to make toast along with instructions on soups, stews. roasts and desserts plus various cakes and biscuits. All dogs in Scotland will need to be microchipped from April under a planned change in the law. Local vets say most responsible owners already chip their dogs. But for those who don’t or are worried about the cost, The Dogs Trust charity will offer the service free, which they say will be a "huge help" in reducing the number of lost and abandoned dogs in Scotland. Scottish Rural Affairs secretary Richard Lochhead said: "Scotland is a nation of animal lovers and so we must do all we can to safeguard dog welfare and
promote responsible ownership.” He said that he understood two-thirds of dogs in Scotland had already been microchipped voluntarily, and claimed that in 2014, over 10,000 dogs in the UK were reunited with their owners as a result of a microchip. "This is an impressive figure, but it could be improved on dramatically by ensuring that all dogs are microchipped and, equally important, that their details are kept up-to-date,"

he added. Mr Lochhead made the announcement at the Dogs Trust in Glasgow. The charity offers free microchipping services at its rehoming centres and at mobile clinics throughout the country. Dogs Trust campaigns director Elvira Meucci said: "We have long been a leading voice in the campaign for compulsory microchipping and are delighted to see the Scottish government legislate for this important component of dog welfare and responsible ownership. "As the UK's largest dog welfare charity, reducing the nation's stray dog population is at the very heart of Dogs Trust's ethos, which is why we have committed to ensuring no dog owners will lack the financial ability to microchip their dog." The Trust says that the government now had time to work out the details of implementing the measure and ensure that it created "a reliable and trusted system that works effectively for both dog owners and vets". www.dogstrust.org.uk

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: A new project hopes to bring extra food portions to those unable to cook for themselves
A recent feature on BBC Breakfast highlighted a great idea which could be taken up here. Casserole Club is a social enterprise that connects those who love to cook with those that can’t cook with the aim of tackling loneliness and malnutrition. It could make a great project for a local organisation. Casserole Club helps people share extra portions of home-cooked food with others in their area who might not be able to cook for themselves.
Members of the club serve up meals to their neighbours while strengthening local neighbourhood relationships. The venture is organised through a website that allows neighbours to sign up as cooks and search for diners in their area. The business was set up by FutureGov, a company that aims to improve public services through digital products. 80 per cent of diners are over the
