MAid Wins MAssive Aid Boost The famous steamship Maid of the Loch has begun the spring season by winning headlines across the UK after clinching a spectacular boost worth close to a million pounds. The cash not only brings closer the day when she can once again ply the waters of Loch Lomond but also raises the profile of the long, hard-fought campaign to convert what had once become a derelict hulk back to her former glory. The Scottish Government grant of £950,000 has brought the project closer to success, although with a £5.5million target John Beveridge, chairman of the Loch Lomond Steamship Company, admits there’s still some way to go. The bid to refloat the Maid began in earnest in 1996, and for more than two decades a relentless programme of fundraising and rebuilding has helped win the current level of support – despite the doubts of some who thought the plan could never become a reality. As a born-again iconic presence

on the Loch the Maid could become a still bigger attraction than the many people who enjoyed daily sailings back in the 1950’s may remember. With lochside tourism now booming, her currently shorebound presence at Balloch is a continual reminder that this “work in progress” is still very much a live project – even if it’s fully 22 years since the Loch Lomond Steamship Company took over. John Beveridge told The Scotsman newspaper the major new grant for the restoration is “a game changer” – and many local supporters must conclude that all that time and effort has been worthwhile. On the Maid’s Facebook page he specifically thanked West Dunbartonshire Council for backing the case for a major grant.

The Maid’s patron, Lord Robert Smith of Kelvin, said: “I am delighted with my latest role as Patron of the Maid of the Loch. “It is an enterprising project that both retains, enhances and celebrates Scottish shipbuilding and our engineering skills, and will also create a stunning tourist attraction of one of the country’s most famous beauty spots”. The Maid of the Loch was first launched in 1953, and in future years could become the Loch’s most iconic image.

GARDENER & GROUNDSKEEPER REQUIRED Able to work all weather without supervision

A young artist from Alexandria whose stunning work uses a pioneering new art form has attracted international attention.

The process sounds zany, but the results speak for themselves - it involves pouring the liquid on to a blank canvas and letting it run free or directing its flow by blowing through a straw.

independent Regency Gallery and Framers in Cheltenham said: “The use of alcohol inks to create a new kind of fluid medium is something of a new trend which is taking the art world by storm and Jenna’s work in particular is really lovely.

The result is a brilliant swirl of shapes that can be interpreted by the viewer’s own imagination. Jenna (32), has seen her work exhibited in galleries across the country and online, and has an impressive legion of fans on social media from mainland Europe, the USA and Australia.

“Alcohol ink art is doing really well in America. It is just starting to become popular here and it’s going to be huge.

One gallery in Cheltenham, Wiltshire has described Jenna, as “one to watch” in the highly competitive art world.

“You can see it’s coming and I predict demand for Jenna’s work is going to

Jenna said: “For the last six years I’ve been working as an art therapist helping to support children who have gone through some sort of trauma in their lives. “Often they find it difficult to open up so I help them express themselves through art using different mediums. I’ve always appreciated the therapeutic qualities of art”.

“This is great event to do as a competitive team event or just as a family day out. All we are asking is that you commit to raising a modest £150 to support our work,” said SHA fundraising officer, Linda Winters.

GOOD CAUSE: A 7.5 mile challenge has been organised along the West Highland Way

The Scottish Huntington’s Association (SHA) has organised a 7.5 mile hike-and-bike route along the West Highland Way and also a 35 mile cycle through the Trossachs. It’s reckoned a great opportunity to raise some much needed funds for one of the country’s leading neurological charities. It is the only charity in the country supporting families living with the degenerative neurological condition, Huntington’s disease (HD). The May 26 event which has been organised by Sports Ecosse starts and finishes at the Rowardennan

Hotel. Participants will either walk or run from Rowardennan along the banks of Loch Lomond to Inversnaid, pick up their bike and cycle back via Aberfoyle and Drymen. Bag and bike transfers will be laid on by event organisers as well as snack stops along the way. The route will be marshalled to ensure no one gets lost.

“This event that will attract more than 100 runners and riders so it should be a really great day out, We are delighted to have been able to secure some places but they are likely to go quickly as places for this event are in high demand.”

HD is a complex neurological condition with symptoms that typically begin to develop between the ages of 30 and 50. Those impacted by HD may eventually lose the ability to walk, talk, eat, drink or make decisions and will eventually need 24 hour care, and sadly there is no cure. President Gordon Craig welcomed all those attending and handed over to the Chairman for the evening the Rev. Ian Miller, who has been associated with this event for many years and again selflessly gave his valuable time to chair the proceedings. The first speaker was Debbie Leslie from Inverurie, who as well as being an after dinner

speaker, runs her own company as a massage therapist and Rekiki practitioner. She is also a short story writer, playwright, children’s novelist and award-winning Doric Writer. Headquarters in Glasgow. Iain has been in much in demand on the after-dinner circuit for many years – and attended no less than 26 Burns Suppers this year. His great humour and wit, and ability to change from one subject to another, made him a great favourite on the night. During the evening, various fundraisers were held including Heads & Tails and a Football Card Raffle, and an auction for some excellent prizes raised over £3000. Later Mike Dean, convenor of the Community and Vocational Committee, thanked all those who helped with the success of the evening - including his own committee - for putting in a great effort. He also thanked the Rev. Ian Miller, Debbie Leslie, Iain Gordon and the District Governor from Rotary District 1230, Gary Louttit for joining us on this most successful evening. This year the local charities who will benefit include the West Dunbartonshire Community School Clothing Bank, the local Macmillan Cancer Support and the Dumbarton Day Centre.

DUMBARTON PEOPLE'S THEATRE: The production of 'Dangerous Corner' will go ahead from Wednesday April 25th

Last month’s Beast from the East snow nightmare inevitably forced Dumbarton People’s Theatre to reschedule their February-March production of J B Priestley’s classic “Dangerous Corner” – because life came to a virtual standstill across the whole of Scotland for several crucial days. But none of the effort involved in producing this fascinating piece has been wasted, as the show will now go ahead from Wednesday, April 25 to Saturday, April 28. Those who have already purchased tickets will of course be admitted free of charge on the evening of their choice.

Please note that in the February edition of the Community Advertiser we incorrectly said the play had taken place, but the good news is that it is still to happen and it can be enjoyed this month with no greater risk than a possible April shower on the way to the theatre.

From the pen of a writer probably best known for “An Inspector Calls”, the plot centres on a group of people who are caught up in a harrowing series of events by what amounts to little more than a chance remark, leading to consequences few could have foreseen. Towards the end the whole story is reprised to show what might have happened if a single apparently inconsequential decision had not been made. Set in a classic country house, it has all the hallmarks of an Agatha Christie whodunit, although this time the plot is nothing so straightforward as simply finding a murderer. Not nearly as well known as the sort of period dramas which are now household names on television it’s both a brilliant plot and a cautionary tale, and has the advantage that few people sitting in the Denny Civic Centre will know the original. Tickets are available priced £5 from club members, McDermid’s Keystore, at the Box Office or from dumbartonpeoplestheatre@ outlook.com

This month’s Lennox Heritage Society talk on April 11 is preceded by the group’s annual general meeting, but if you’re not already a member is well worth attending for the regular scheduled talk – which is on the theme of “Mapping the Lennox”. Speaker John Moore will be examining how the area has been covered by maps dating from the 16th century (when the area, outwith its towns, was “the Wild West”) right through to the 20th century. Society meetings are at 7pm in the Concord Centre in Dumbarton, and annual subscription is £10 – or you can pay £2 for a single talk.

Seasonal byelaws are now in force at Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park, as the main visitor season gets underway. The rules were introduced in 2017 in order to protect some of the loch shores from environmental damage caused by the high volume of people - and issues with antisocial behaviour from some campers going back a number of years. The byelaws create Camping Management Zones, covering less than four per cent of the National Park,’ where, between March and September, campers need to camp in a designated camping

Feedback gathered from people who camped is said to have been extremely positive with 87 per cent of respondees saying they would recommend staying in a permit area to others. The National Park Authority is reminding anyone coming to camp this season to be aware of the byelaws and plan their trip in advance. Gordon Watson, chief executive

“But we know that the camping byelaws are still relatively new so it’s important that we continue to make people aware of how they work and encourage them to plan ahead.” He added: “There will be some visible changes this year such as new pitch surfaces, better water facilities, and connectivity for online bookings at Loch Chon campsite. “There will also be some additional signage in places where people told us it was needed to make the Camping Management Zones clearer. Wild camping, in accordance with the Outdoor Access Code, is still permitted outside of the Camping Management Zones.

tAles froM tHe trenCHes the thick of it. The Kaiserschlacht (Emperor’s Battle) was the Germans’ last great roll of the dice, aiming to score decisive victory on the Western Front before the Americans could get properly into the war.

This is the centenary year of the end of the Great War, a holocaustal conflict which devoured lives by the million yet – it is frequently argued – solved nothing. But as a national trauma which affected every family in Scotland it’s maybe appropriate that this year’s Rock of Ages events at Dumbarton Castle have a new focus on what life was like at the Front for countless thousands of soldiers from Clydeside towns like Dumbarton. A good result Comic-con at the Loch for rents Nobody likes any kind of increase to weekly living expenses in these uncertain times, but the council reckons it’s done the best it can for rents by pegging this year’s increase at two per cent – following a consultation with tenants.

unanimously last month. The consultation process was developed in close consultation with West Dunbartonshire Tenants and Residents Association (WDTRO).

The options were increases of three per cent, 2.5 per cent or two per cent, and there is no mystery about why the last of these choices proved the most popular. Nevertheless it was by a fairly tight margin, with 53.14 per cent of the 303 respondents opting for the lowest increase option.

“Councillors need to know the views of tenants and residents before making decisions that will affect them and we are grateful for the feedback we received before the meeting.”

Surprisingly, perhaps, almost a quarter of the vote went for three per cent, and just over a fifth for 2.5 per cent. The two per cent rise was duly voted through

Councillor Iain McLaren, vice convener of housing and communities, said: “We are committed to ensuring our council homes are of the highest possible standard and this two per cent rent increase will help us to continue to do that.

Comics by the ton, special guests, art and costumed characters will all feature at this month’s Comiccon spectacular at Lomond Shores this month, along with a wide selection of toys. The event was a spectacular success last year, and could well become a permanent annual fixture – and at £2 admission (children under ten go free) is a great option for a family day out (although you’ll probably want to bring some spending money for your favourite comics). Comic-Con takes place over the whole weekend of April 28 and 29, and runs from 11am to 5pm on both days.

April 2018 | What's Up Doc?

neW HoMes for HArBour

What's Up Doc? with Dr Nick Dunn

This month: HOLDING BACK THE YEARS!

Spring has begun with some good news for Dumbarton and Alexandria on the housing front, with the approval of the purchase of land at Dumbarton Harbour for 45 new council homes to be built.

homes where they are most needed across the authority area.

Meanwhile it’s also been agreed to sell land at Muir Road and Talisman Avenue in Dumbarton to Caledonia Housing Association and the Wheatley Group, while due to go on site this year are 15 homes in Alexandria town centre and 81 in Bellsmyre – along with others in Clydebank.

Houses to be built by partners include 292 units by Wheatley Group/Cube Housing Association; 86 units by Clydebank Housing Association; 33 Link Housing Association homes; 167 homes by Dunbritton Housing Association and 242 Caledonia Housing Association units.

A commitment to build 1,000 new homes in West Dunbartonshire by 2021 as part of the More Homes Better Homes programme will see the council and housing association partners working to deliver the affordable

The Scottish Government has set a national target of 50,000 new affordable homes to be created by 2021, and West Dunbartonshire Council’s More Homes Better Homes strategy aims to tie in with this wider aim.

Across the country GPs are being encouraged to identify the most frail of their patients, to allow extra attention to be paid to planning their care, hopefully reducing the risk of falls and hospital admission and improving general well-being. In true scientific fashion there are scoring tools used to indicate how frail people over the age of 65 may be. A key indicator of frailty is something called “sarcopaenia”, which is muscle loss and weakness. However I was fascinated to read research that showed a group of cyclists, some over

80, had not lost muscle mass or strength as expected, and had well developed immune systems comparable to most 20 yr olds! The immune system is important in protecting against infections, rheumatic disease and sometimes cancer. Indeed the good news for non-cyclists is that evidence to date indicates that any regular exercise which pushes the body and gets you a little out of puff, will delay some effects of ageing! We may not yet have discovered the fountain of eternal youth, but at least it’s a start!

Are YOU a

6 STAR

Worker?

B

ecause Share Scotland IS a 6 -star organisation, providing support to people with complex disabilities across Scotland, and we need YOU! In West Dunbartonshire we support 11 people in 7 different locations, and we employ around 60 people locally. As a significant employer, we believe we have responsibilities to ensure that we provide opportunities for local people first and foremost, keeping local income in the local community. The role of support worker with Share Scotland is an extremely rewarding one, where you are part of a dedicated team who work as hard to support each other as they do with the person they are employed to support. Those whom we support live with complex and sometimes profound learning and physical disabilities, but it is very much our belief that everyone is entitled to achieve their ambitions and desires where possible, and we go to extra lengths to make this happen. Given the current challenging financial and recruitment climate, to be awarded 6 stars shows the massive commitment our staff demonstrate daily. As an organization, we ensure that we listen to staff, family members, service users and other agencies, which has also led us to the very highest standards of working practices and new and innovative thinking. A long serving staff member recently said, “One of my most valued experiences has been to see the true personality of this man emerge and develop into the complex character he is now, and watch his individuality flourish.” We know that the people at the “coal face” are those who know the service users best, and how we can make things work better, so no matter a person’s position in the organization, we are always happy to listen to them and put ideas into practice. We also actively encourage staff to bring their hobbies and interests into the workplace, and

we have had staff who have introduced fishing, painting, football and crafts into service users lives, with great success. It is impossible to describe a “typical” work day at Share, as there is always something different happening, and that is one of the benefits, according to our staff. Some of the general tasks are as you would expect – supporting someone to get dressed, enjoy meals, personal hygiene and attend appointments – but there are many other activities you may not expect. People who are unable to walk often go skiing. People who are unable to communicate enjoy drama and dance performances, some undertake voluntary roles in the community and we also have 5 gold medal winning Special Olympians in one of our Edinburgh services! A Service User told us “The staff support me to go to college and to practice my cooking. They like my sausage rolls!!” As a Support Worker with Share Scotland, you will enjoy many benefits, including a starting salary of the Scottish National Living Wage, contributory pension scheme, generous holiday entitlement, and access to the highest level of funded training, but more importantly, you will be part of an organization who values it’s staff just as much as those we support. A parent recently said – “As a father, we never felt we were losing our daughter to a support organization, more we gained an extended family who have looked after us as much as our daughter. If you are looking for a career where you will gain as much as you give, then Share Scotland is the place for you.” Investors in People, who rated us as a Silver Employer, described our staff as “the reason that Share Scotland is such a special place to work” and during a recent Care Inspection, where we retained our 6-star status, we were described as “sector leading”.

Please visit our website at www.sharescotland.org.uk and look at the jobs page or you can contact us on 0141 445 8992 or email enquiries@sharescotland.org.uk

“I feel part of something special – it’s so much more than a salary” We are actively recruiting for staff in the West Dunbartonshire area at the moment, with both day and night shift roles available. You don’t necessarily need to have experience of working in this sector, although it wouald be great, but for the right person, we will provide all the training needed, a comprehensive induction programme and the opportunity to

shadow another support worker until you are confident in the role. We would love to hear from anyone who thinks this job could be for them, or if you know of someone who might be interested, and we look forward to welcoming you to the Share Scotland team. “Now he’s doing things young people should be doing – I feel I’ve got my son back who’s been missing” – quote from a parent.

EASTER TIME TARGET: The new Submarine Centre is due to be open by Easter

The launch of Eric Thompson’s book “ On Her Majesty’s Secret Nuclear Service which we reviewed recently was held last month in Helensburgh’s Scottish Submarine Centre. The Centre was not yet open to the public, but the audience was told that was about to change. Brian Keating, the centre’s chief executive said: “ We are due to open at Easter. The project has been underway for five years and the motive throughout has been, ‘lest we forget.’ The audience was seated

underneath the centrepiece of the museum, an X-51 class miniature submarine, donated by The Royal Navy Museum. As the submarine is extremely cramped inside, it only held a crew of four, it will not be possible for the public to get on board. However by using state of the art video technology visitors

will be able to “see inside by use of projections of the interior onto the exterior of the hull. The walls of the museum will similarly be used to tell a constantly unfolding story of the war beneath the waves using several projectors. It is believed to be the first time this technique has been used. The museum has had the help of students from the two local high schools to develop databases of submariners who died while in service. The database is now over 5,300 records and volunteers are expanding the data fields and looking for as much information about these brave men as possible. Visitors will be able to access this information through an interactive memorial. Brian added: “The Centre will be a central place for educating young scots about what the submarine service is all about and I believe it will also develop over the years into a world class facility for cultural events.“ For update on the centre see www.facebook.com/ ScottishSubmarineCentre

Easter is the first important holiday break of the year for anyone at school, but for those whose schooldays are just a memory it’s also a great opportunity to shrug off the cobwebs of the long, dreich winter and have a bit of fun. Everyone defines that in their own way, but the great thing about spring is that the range of interesting things you can do in your free time expands dramatically from now onwards. Attractions that were shut or moribund reopen, and wildlife that was in hibernation is newly active – even before you consider the sight of spring lambs in the fields. West Dunbartonshire has all the ingredients of a great early-year holiday, both for families and for couples

simply looking for nice places to visit and interesting things to do. For families there’s the key local resource of the Meadow Centre in Dumbarton to enjoy – swimming excursions can be a great day out, with the option of lessons for anyone who is either a complete beginner or merely aiming to build on existing skills. Also within easy range is the superb public facility of Levengrove Park, which suddenly seems much more attractive an option with the chill winds of March gone for another year – it’s a superb venue for major events like the annual Pipe Band Championships, and is possibly one of the most family-friendly outdoor spaces in the central belt. Another major asset that’s within easy range of

homes is Balloch Castle Country Park, 200 acres of semi-natural and ornamental woodland, open parkland, formal gardens, meadow, play parks and shoreline. In the park you can explore the Fairy Glen, Chinese Garden, Pleasure Grounds, Quarry Pond, Kitchen Garden, Secret Garden, woodlands and parklands. There is also a lochside kiosk serving hot and cold snacks and refreshments from Easter right through to September.

this Easter... Another much older iconic landmark in the heart of Dumbarton is, of course, the Rock and its castle, and if you’ve never been Easter is the perfect opportunity to see a real piece of local history while enjoying a fun Easter challenge.

Scientists have concluded that the chicken came first not the egg, because the protein which makes egg shells is only produced by hens.

Wet GRiP Scientists have the answer to why fingers shrivel up like an old prune when we soak in the bath. Tests confirmed that wrinkly fingers improve our grip on wet or submerged objects, working to channel away the water like the rain treads in car tyres.

Mediation is a practical and effective method of resolving disputes without resorting to the raising of a court action. It allows participants to come together and discuss their respective views and reach their own solution, with the assistance of an independent and trained mediator. The process is entirely voluntary; and in fact will only really work if both parties approach it with an open mind. The information provided during mediation is confidential and the purpose of this is to encourage open discussions and allow for every possible solution to be aired. The confidentiality element remains even in the event the parties cannot ultimately

reach an agreement and do end up in court. Essentially, you are not able to found on discussions that took place during mediation in any future court action. It is important to be aware that the only exception to this is in relation to any factual financial details exchanged between the parties. Mediation is often used following separation and family disputes. However, it could assist in any number of situations, including neighbour or workplace disputes. If you think mediation may assist you in some way then it may be worthwhile discussing the process with you solicitor. Legal Aid can be made available to fund the process in certain circumstances.

The club says the already high quality of work has been stepped up a notch by an investment in art tutor DVDs, with topics including composition, ink and wash painting in mediums including composition, oils, acrylic and pastel.

A highly-regarded local art prize will go to the Drymen artist whose work wins the most votes at a special spring show in the village hall this month. The exhibition and sale of paintings is on Saturday, April 21 and Sunday, April 22 from 10am to 5pm, when a galaxy of local art talent will be on display – but just one framed painting will win the coveted Wendy Shuker prize. Every Wednesday afternoon over the winter months the hall has been transformed into a creative art studio involving from 15 to 20

NEW SCHOOL: Plans are being made for a ÂŁ15.1m Renton Primary

Major education moves are afoot in Renton and Alexandria this month, with news that one completely new school is to be built while another will be upgraded. There are plans to build a new £15.1m Renton Primary School and to invest £850,000 refurbishing St Mary’s Primary in Alexandria. Along with the new Renton school there will be a language and communication base for

children with additional support needs. This is obviously a major spend, and one that has reached the planning stage after a great deal of work on just how to obtain the best value for money for the longer term, and will give a new

tHe sCottisH ssPCA need our HelP important and will help to make a difference. Centre manager Joe McDade said: “We’re caring for a large number of dogs at the moment and as a result we’re going through food really quickly and we’d be grateful if locals could lend their support. “We are very lucky that people regularly hand in items to our centre and we currently have lots of donated food for our other animals. “We would greatly appreciate any donations of sensitive and hypoallergenic food as it is great for the dogs in our care with sensitive stomachs.

The Scottish SPCA is asking local animal lovers to donate sensitive and hypoallergenic food to help feed the abused, abandoned and injured animals currently in the care of its Dumbarton Rescue and Rehoming Centre. The centre is struggling to keep up with demand as they’re going through a large amount of this type of food a week. To the uninitiated it might seem odd

that animals need special food, but although their dietary needs are obviously different from those of humans it doesn’t mean they are not prone to the same sort of

allergic conditions experienced by many people. The Dumbarton centre relies on public generosity when it comes to supplies of any kind, and every season of the year brings with it some form of challenge – usually capably met by generous local residents. Amounts given do not have to be huge, but every donation is

“If anyone wants to donate or meet some of the animals in our care, including Kai, Hunter and Rex the dogs, they can do so by dropping in anytime between 10am and 4pm (closed Tuesday).” Donations can be sent via the charity’s Amazon Wishlist: http:// amzn.eu/evBUcVd or handed in to the Dunbartonshire centre on Dumbarton Road, Milton G82 2UA.
