SET FOR DUMBARTON 2020 The big question of 2019 for many local residents will be “Will Harry and Meghan be paying us a visit in 2020?” – because we’re waiting to hear whether the royal couple are going to accept a unique invitation. Earlier this year the ground was laid for an ambitious Dumbarton festival to be staged in 2020, a vast undertaking which will need a full year’s preparation. It could deliver major spin-offs in terms of tourism and other business, but, as stressed in recent news accounts, the one factor that would virtually guarantee success would be a royal visit. As Earl and Countess of Dumbarton, Harry and Meghan have a special link to the Burgh which hasn’t so far been acknowledged in any significant way. Meanwhile TV news screens show a very busy royal itinerary abroad, even before Prince Harry’s involvement with the Invictus initiative is considered. However the invitation from Dumbarton 2020 could arguably hardly be better timed, since most of the royal diary will be

JGS

pencilled in for at least a year ahead. Alerting the couple to the fact that there will be a perfect gala occasion to celebrate in a little over a year’s time could just make the difference. Early coverage of the planned festival indicates that it will cover a broad sweep of arts and leisure experiences and celebrations, and it is set to be an all-out effort likely to win key support by all of the relevant local agencies. On previous form it is also certain that most of the festival will be easy-access or free, as the events will be a celebration of the Burgh’s longstanding communities, but it will also be designed to attract people from much farther afield for specific shows or displays. If all goes to plan, it’s suggested, this year will have seen the launch of the idea and next year

will see its development into fact – with the possible addition of what one report called “the icing on the cake” if the Earl and Countess are able to appear. As a news and photo opportunity for Dumbarton that single possibility would put the whole endeavour on a sound footing from the start, but as we come to the end of 2018 it’s currently still the festival planners’ equivalent of a heartfelt Christmas note to Santa. We look forward to bringing more detailed coverage of plans for Dumbarton 2020 in the year ahead – and the sort of special events it is likely to include. MEET 500 NEW SHOPPERS Local shops should notice a festive trading upturn this year because of the recently opened new council offices in the town centre – bringing 500 more people to an area that needs and deserves all the trade it can get. The former Dumbarton Academy site has been transformed into “a modern and efficient town centre base” which features a retained William Leiper-designed, Grade A listed façade. It’s the result of a conservation project supported by Historic Environment Scotland which aimed to ensure this important part of Dumbarton’s heritage was preserved. Staff who helped deliver the project, community representatives and external contractors involved in the project recently gathered to see council leader Jonathan McColl and deputy leader Caroline McAllister unveil a plaque to commemorate the opening. It was a small but important part of local history, marking a determination to continue the fightback to transform Dumbarton back into the busy and popular town centre of decades past.

Church Street official opening

Council McColl said: “Just a few years ago, the old Academy façade was nothing more than a derelict shell, propped up by timber and steel supports. “The project to sympathetically restore this building while also creating modern office space has not only played a part in protecting a piece of Dumbarton’s heritage, it has given a huge economic boost to the local area. “Since May, when our staff moved in and we opened our doors to

the community, the difference in the town centre has been clearly visible. “With our Dumbarton office now much more accessible to the public, it’s a bustling hub of activity, and the benefits of this extra town centre footfall are being felt by our traders and businesses.” Now that the new base has been “run in” for several weeks the benefits to town centre trade – particularly at this time of year – ought to be obvious.

must also include a map and compass and a high standard of navigational ability, because you’re not going to have the luxury of time and comfort that you do in summer.

Heather Morning, Mountain Safety Adviser for Mountaineering Scotland, said: “Conditions can be very treacherous at this time of year and just having the right equipment isn’t enough.

“You’re going to have to be able to navigate accurately in some pretty extreme conditions of poor visibility and while being buffeted by wind and snow”.

“You have to be able to call on experience to know how to deal with a whole range of conditions, both weather-wise and underfoot. “That equipment and experience

Routes will take longer than expected in winter conditions and many people will end up finishing in the dark, so a head torch – and spare batteries – is crucial. In fact better still is to carry a spare head torch, which saves having to faff about in the cold

and dark trying to change over batteries.” Extra layers are essential, such as a synthetic duvet jacket, and an emergency bivi bag stored in the bottom of a rucksack is highly recommended. Before even setting foot on the hill, a vital part of planning is checking the mountain weather forecast at a site such as www.mwis.org.uk. The weather in Scotland’s mountains is notoriously fickle and a specialised forecast, specific to the mountains, is essential. ROCK’S MYSTERY GENERAL

It was the height of the Napoleonic Wars, the general was a capable officer with an impressive military career already behind him, and under the dynamic command of Marshal Ney, “bravest of the brave”, he fully expected to lead his regiments’ eagle standards to victory on that fateful day – but instead the French army was badly defeated and he was taken prisoner. As a man of rank he would be fairly well-treated, but as a man of action would have been distraught at missing the rest of

Just what is the true story behind the fate of the handsome, dashing French general who found himself a prisoner on Dumbarton Rock more than 200 years ago? There are many fascinating stories about the Rock’s history, but perhaps none so intriguing as the mystery surrounding General Edouard-Francois Simon, who was captured by the British during the Battle of Busaco in 1810.

a war in which he would surely have gained promotion to still higher command – “la gloire” was everything to a soldier of ambition. What happened next is almost like a Napoleonic version of the Colditz story, except that the general probably found himself living in reasonable if bleak quarters during his imprisonment on the Rock. He was allowed to climb to the top every day, for the exercise and some fresh air, but was always accompanied by two soldiers. The tale will be told in full by the council’s collections officer,

General Edouard-Francois Simon

Andrew Graham, at the Lennox Heritage Society meeting on Wednesday, December 12 – with the promise that there’s more than a hint of intrigue in the story surrounding the general’s sojourn at His Majesty’s Pleasure. Society meetings are at 7pm in the Concord Centre in Dumbarton, and annual subscription is £10 – or you can pay £2 for a single talk.

Despite the season there is still, this month, one potent local reminder of what it all meant, and means, in the form of a remarkable art exhibition which puts the individual behind all those war statistics into sharp focus – and it runs until January 12. “Soldiers” is a major exhibition of new portraits painted by acclaimed local artist Tom McKendrick.

stories from the First World War to the present day. “The men and women who look out at us are dignified, determined and stoical. “They bear witness to many of the horrors of war but they take pride in having done their duty serving their country.”

Each artwork is displayed alongside the sitter’s own story, adding an extra dimension to the exhibition.

Local, Reliable & Friendly

The project represents six years of work, in the course of which Tom heard many inspiring stories of bravery – and the very human side of how service personnel try to come to terms with experiences most of us are lucky not to be able to imagine. The images are arresting, but not harrowing – their impact is arguably deeper and more thought-provoking than many of the images of war made familiar to us through video reportage of modern conflict.

His paintings are a testimony to serving personnel – like 100 year old Dunkirk veteran, Jimmy Gillies – and to the human consequences of war.

Five dedicated local residents were recently handed the best possible pre-Christmas present when they were honoured by Her Majesty the Queen with the British Empire Medal. They include Sheenah Nelson, for services to Macmillan Cancer Support and to Heart Charities throughout West Dunbartonshire and beyond; and Allan Stewart, founder of charitable group Team Chivas.

Dunbartonshire’s most deserving, and most dedicated citizens.

Lord Lieutenant for Dunbartonshire, Michael Gregory OBE presented the medals to the group who were among those listed in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list earlier this year.

“Without these recipients, who have given many hours of their own time over many years, our community would be a much poorer place.

“I took along friends and family, including my mother who is in her 90s and my two-month old granddaughter Zoe. We all thoroughly enjoyed the day.” Kenneth McChlery, who was honoured for his public community service, said: “I am still smiling about receiving the award and it was made more special as my dad, who is 97, was able to be there along with my wife, children and grandchildren.”

“The British Empire Medal is the perfect way to say thank you to people who have worked hard to serve their community.

“They have made a difference to so many people’s lives and for that we are truly grateful.”

Also honoured was Frances Jones, founder and organiser of Coeliac Group Glasgow, who was credited for her service to people with the disease.

LOCH’S LIFE BEGINS AT 40 Balloch and Haldane Primary pupils joined kids from Helensburgh to carry out a very special tree-planting exercise recently – one which marks a small but important milestone in the ongoing battle to preserve the area’s ďŹ nest natural asset. The effort involved planting 40 trees, one for each year in which independent charity Friends of Loch Lomond and the Trossachs has been busily striving to maintain and improve the area now known to countless thousands as a National Park Friends Chairman, James Fraser said: “It is a fine testament to the late and energetic Dr Hannah

Stirling MBE, the late Professor Gavin Arneil and other founding members that the Friends is still a vibrant organisation, as relevant today as it was back in 1978, upholding the original vision of trying to make a difference, and helping to care for what is a very special place enjoyed by millions of people from home and overseas.

Jackie Baillie said: “It was great to see the enthusiasm of local schoolchildren planting trees around the edge of the walled garden in Balloch Castle Country Park. “This was a very fitting way to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the pioneering Friends conservation charity who have done so much over the years to protect and enhance the special qualities of Loch Lomond and the wider area for the benefit of people and nature.

TIME TO UNITE A COUNTY?

Late News

It may never happen – and many would fight the idea tooth and nail – but an English university study has proposed a merger between West Dunbartonshire and East Dunbartonshire. The idea, from the University of Sheffield, is part of a wider exercise which aims to produce ideas on how to replace the country’s 32 different council areas with just 19 new local authorities. There have been reorganisations in the past – which is how Helensburgh ended up being “moved” to Argyll and Bute – but this one has the apparent advantage of uniting two halves of the same county under a single administration. Critics of the idea will be quick to argue that apart from some important sports and other social contacts there is no obvious merit to the idea of bringing East together with West Dunbartonshire in what could be seen as little more than an exercise to make the numbers work. However as an example of an apparently odd fit they might look no farther than Clydebank, which

years ago was linked to Milngavie as a parliamentary constituency – even although you might struggle to find two places more different from one another.

Sunday 9th

This latest attempt to find ways of shaking up Scotland’s local authorities is a kite-flying exercise which may fail to gain any serious traction – but on the other hand some might contend that a merger would lead to a stronger authority that might ultimately deliver benefits in terms of jobs and housing. A present example of a nearby local authority already operating with unusual boundaries is East Renfrewshire, which includes wealthy Newton Mearns and Giffnock but also Barrhead – where unemployment and social deprivation have been problems in the past. Would East and West Dunbartonshire united be

December 2018 | What's Up Doc?

SILHOUETTES OF OUR PAST Congratulations to Dumbarton’s Riverside Church, which was recently awarded a special honour by the Armed Forces Covenant Trust – the right to display ten very special silhouettes during the recent Great War armistice centenary commemoration. The images do not represent specific people, but are emblematic of all those – their names largely forgotten to the modern age – who gave their lives for a cause they believed was just. Countless servicemen and sometime women from the Dumbarton area paid the ultimate price in a war which ultimately consumed millions of lives across the world. The silhouettes are a silent reproof to any who imagine that these

events are safely in the past, and a reminder of the consequences that unfold when politics gives way to conflict. “There but not there” was a project which saw silhouettes installed where serving men and women came from across the country, back in the communities they left behind – often, never to return. The ten transparent silhouettes were placed around the Sanctuary at Dumbarton Riverside, and formed a striking and thought provoking presence for those sitting amongst them in the pews. A spokesperson for the church said: “We really appreciate being included in the Armistice and Armed Forces Communities programme, which makes awards to bring communities together to remember; and to think about the Armed Forces today”.

What's Up Doc? with Dr Nick Dunn

This month: FIT TESTING... In Scotland all people over 50 are sent a kit to test their poo to help early detection of possible bowel cancers. The new “FIT” (Faecal Immunochemical Test) test gives a more accurate result which is not affected by medicines or food intake, indicates severity of hidden bleeding and importantly, is much easier to use than the original kits. Already the bowel screening teams are seeing increased return rates from people, increasing early detection, and survival from bowel cancer. So far 5,000 cancers have been diagnosed

Do you need an uplift...?

I wondered if sometimes people are simply too busy, and put the kits to one side, then forget to go back to them, or lose them? If you are one of these people, or know someone who hasn’t responded then it’s worth taking action. If you contact 0800 0121 833 or look up www.nhsinform. scot/bowelscreening and they will send a new kit. It’s never too late!

WAITING FOR GOOD NEWS… Alzheimer’s volunteers. The judges involved in deciding which should be the winning wishes are Dame Darcey Bussell - TV personality, author and former Royal Ballet Principal dancer; comedian and presenter Fred MacAulay, BBC Scotland broadcaster Janice Forsyth, comedienne Susan Calman and Christopher Hampson, chief executive and artistic director of Scottish Ballet.

Every Voice Choir

The popular Every Voice Choir run by Alzheimer Scotland’s West Dunbartonshire branch has said a big thankyou to the many local people who did their best to bring a glamorous ballet event to Dumbarton – and now it’s a case of “cross your fingers”. The public vote for the Scottish Ballet event has been counted, and the winners of the nationwide contest to bring performers to town will be declared before December 20. The project is part of Scottish Ballet’s 50th birthday celebrations, and in fairytale style the company is determined to make five different

wishes come true in communities around the country in 2019. If the local choristers are successful, Scottish Ballet stars will perform alongside them in the town’s St Augustine’s Episcopal Church next year – an event that would not only be great fun to attend or take part in but also help to further raise the profile of West Dunbartonshire’s

The votes have all been counted and the judging is underway, but the winners won’t be announced to the general public until some time early in 2019 – but those who have been successful will be told privately this month. Whatever the result, at least local people involved in the campaign to bring Scottish Ballet to Dumbarton know they have given it their best shot. A spokesperson for the Dumbarton group said: “Thank you to each and every one of you who took the time to vote, especially those who voted every day. “We have no idea how many of the top votes will be presented to the celebrity jury and we won’t find out which wishes have been successful until December 20”.

Wandering around the local shops in search of inspiration it occurred to me that it is a far more pleasant experience than shuffling in the city or the mall (writes Nick Cowie). There’s the serendipity element of seeing someone or something you haven’t seen for a while and you can also allow yourself a wee pat on the back for helping the local economy because buying locally, according to research

carried out by the Chambers of Commerce helps everyone. A recent report stated: “Every pound that leaves your area is largely lost to your community, in fact research suggests that every single pound you spend

A Sense of Christmas | December 2018

We’ve all heard the tales of hard times on the high street, but there’s strong evidence that more people are consciously deciding to eat at locally owned restaurants and buy from locally owned stores and shops.

are made locally and aren't available elsewhere. Buy a dress or a handbag or unusual gift item by a fledgling designer and there is a real sense of having made a special effort to be different from the herd.

It was a trend noted by the British Independent Retailers Association which reported that more traditional independent shops opened than were closed in Britain’s town centres, whilst the national chains continued to see a fall.

Your independent trader should be able to recommend products and give you the story behind them. It makes the retail experience that much more pleasant.

Savvy shoppers` know that shopping locally is not in any way an inferior choice. Independent shops often stock items which

hacks PERKY TREE Many of us unthinkingly put our tree by a radiator or fireplace, with all that heat your tree will dry out much faster. Moving your tree somewhere cooler, such as a hallway, may stop your tree shedding and stop you spending the whole festivities glued to your Hoover.

This month: SEPARATION Separating from a spouse or partner is always going to be emotionally difficult, whether the split is acrimonious or not. The decision to separate can have a number of significant consequences. As well as impacting on your living arrangements, you may have financial commitments or children together. In circumstances where there are children of the relationship, then reaching agreement regarding their care and welfare arrangements will generally take priority. This is fairly obvious. Secondary to that, but just as obvious, is addressing financial matters and division of any assets. Unfortunately, in the current climate it may well be that debts outweigh any

assets and therefore liability for those debts will require to be resolved. Once these big matters have been discussed, it is important that the less obvious tasks are not forgotten about. This can include ensuring you remember to change the terms of your will or changing the beneficiary of any death benefits from your pension. It is unlikely that it would be appropriate for a former partner to make decisions on your behalf should you lose capacity. As a result, a Power of Attorney may require to be revoked. These are only a couple of examples. Therefore, no matter the circumstances of separation it is important that you speak to your solicitor and receive relevant advice.

GREAT GRANT OPPORTUNITY Local organisations have until Friday, December 7 to bid for up to £5,000 to help transform their local area as part of the Your Community initiative. As well as cash to invest in valuable projects, groups are promised full support in completing their application from the council’s communities team and West Dunbartonshire Community Volunteer Services (WDCVS). Once all applications have been received, residents will be able to vote for their favourite ideas online, and at a community budgeting event scheduled for February.

It may seem a long time since news broke that Alexandria was set to receive a brand new Lidl discount store in Bank Street- but while nothing is happening on the ground a great deal has been quietly developing in the background. Plans to open the store in spring this year were put on hold when an expensive gas main problem was identified on the site, but while that was the proverbial spanner in the works for the company there seems to be plenty of determination to get the project back on track. Talks about how to get the scheme rolling were due to take place as this edition was preparing to go to press, so a unit which could form the lynchpin of the redeveloped shops in Mitchell Way is still on the cards. Lidl has been a dynamic success in Scotland where some other once strong household name retail brands have suffered, offering a wide variety of competitively-

A MARKET FOR THEY’RE TRUE GRIT READY It might never happen, CHRISTMAS but if we see a return Delivery of more than 4100 tonnes of rock salt

In many continental and Scandinavian towns the annual Christmas market is a main highlight of the season, and is as much a celebration as a retail occasion – which is why the most famous markets are major tourism attractions too. That sort of culture has still to develop its full potential in Scotland, but the Christmas Market at Lomond Shores (December 12 to 24) gives a flavour of what the festive season is all about. With artisan gifts and crafts, and plenty of hot food and mulled wine, the market has all the right ingredients for an interesting Christmas shopping excursion – open from 10am till 4pm throughout.

of the March blizzard nightmare over the coming winter the local gritter fleet are ready – with a mountain of more than 4100 tonnes of rock salt to help “keep Dumbarton moving”. The gloves were off – or more likely on – towards the end of October, when gritting teams were placed on 24-hour standby. The theory behind a high level of readiness is that by responding as rapidly and effectively as possible the problem can be kept manageable and brought under control. The council says that when severe weather conditions are forecast it grits almost two thirds of the local road network. Meanwhile the Greenspace team work to ensure footpaths near schools, care homes, hospitals and other priority routes are

kept clear – the threat of icy pavements to elderly people, in particular, is recognised. However across central Scotland earlier this year community action often came to the rescue when services came under pressure, clearing pathways or blocked driveways under their own steam. West Dunbartonshire has more than 450 roadside grit bins across the area, which the council says means that “generally no home is more than 300 metres from a supply should it become necessary”. Infrastructure convener Councillor Iain McLaren said: “As we saw last

Stairways Driveways

“The grit stocks have been replenished, the bins in our communities have been filled up and the staff and equipment are ready to deal with another harsh winter.” Residents can obtain small quantities of rock salt for private use from the council's road depots at Elm Road, Dumbarton or Stanford Street, Clydebank. A map detailing gritting routes and locations of grit bins is available on the council website.

CYCLE PATH HAS A LONG WAY TO GO PETS AT CHRISTMAS The various Animal Welfare charities remind people with pets that there are some simple Christmas dos and don'ts: • Many plants are poisonous, including yew, ivy berries and poinsettia. Prickly Christmas trees are dangerous too, if dogs are attracted to their needles. • Give your pets a treat, but remember that too much rich food isn't good for animals. Some seasonal foods, such as grapes, sultanas and raisins are toxic to dogs, and chocolate can actually kill them. • Splinters of poultry bones are also dangerous, they can become stuck in their throats or even pierce their intestinal tract. • Don't ignore your pets' needs while you’re celebrating – keep to a regular routine of feeding and exercise.

The cycle path linking Helensburgh to Dumbarton is to gain another 300m but more than £2m has still to be sourced if the path is to be complete by its 2023 target date. A report to Helensburgh and Lomond Area Committee meeting confirmed that work on a 285m stretch from Cardross station to Geilston Burn could be done and once complete, more than 1km of the route within the village will have been built.

Argyll and Bute Council’s executive director of development and infrastructure, Pippa Milne, said in her report: “The route linking the edge of Helensburgh at Hermitage Academy/Waitrose to Cardross Station has a total length of 5.2km, of which a total of 1.6km has been constructed. “Within Cardross, a 785m section linking Cardross Railway Station to Ferry Road, Cardross was constructed in 2015/16.

This section is well used by local residents for leisure purposes. “In 2018/19 it is planned to construct a 285m section of the route within Cardross from Cardross Station to the Geilston Burn. “This section will route via Geilston Park Cardross Playing Fields and Cardross Park. This work was included within the Roads Service works programme to start in October 2018.”

FEST OF FOOD AND FUN IN HELENSBURGH

fun

December starts with one of Helensburghs highlights of the year, the annual two day Winter festival, why not pop down on the train and enjoy the festive atmosphere

WORLD’S BIGGEST SNOWMAN In 1999, in the state of Maine in America, the world’s biggest ever snowman (or to be more precise, snow woman) named Olympia stood at 122 feet, one inch high and broke the Guinness world record for the largest snowman.

It's not just food on offer, the street market will have dozens of stalls with a range of gifts and goodies for all budgets. This is the sixth year of family fun and festivity and this year there are more attractions than ever. Its centrepiece is a traditional galloping horses carousel. There will be a bouncy castle, a Victorian chair o'plane and some fascinating techy stuff provided by the Navy bomb squad. The stage will feature a full programme of entertainment including a number of top class tribute acts as well as local talent and carousel. Santa will be in his specially constructed grotto in the Parish Church Hall hosted by the Rotary Club of Helensburgh Garelochside and Peninsula Trikes will

be offering motorbike trike rides around the town.

beneficiary is the Helensburgh and Lomond Food Bank.

There’s an international menu of street food including, Scottish, Indian food, vegetarian treats, homemade soup, hog roast and a wide variety of more traditional favourites.

Organisers add: “Motorheads will be able to see some full-on horsepower in a display of top of the range new and classic cars on Sunday while four legged power will be in evidence with the Ayrshire Reindeer who will also be visiting on both days.

One of the highlights is the Santa Dash attracting up to 300 enthusiastic Santas, including four-legged Santas. Organised by Helensburgh Round Table, it is one of their main charity fundraisers. This year the
