HONOUR FOR ‘UNSUNG HERO’ A Dumbarton man who proudly but quietly serves as Director of Care for veterans charity Erskine is on a list of 100 Outstanding Nurses compiled by social media community WeNurses. Derek Barron is being celebrated for having made a difference in four areas - patient care at a population level, understanding of best nursing practice for achieving improvement, public understanding of nursing and positively promoting nursing. The accolade comes after the WeNurses community group invited its Twitter followers to shine a light on some of the unsung heroes of nursing. All the nominations were then reviewed and independently scored from one to four, and the list ultimately whittled down to the final 100 names. This most recent accolade is yet another for Derek, who in 2017 was awarded one of the first Fellowships of the Queen’s Nursing Institute Scotland (QNIS) for 50 years. Now he has the satisfaction of
knowing that his efforts are being recognised by his own profession – not for any personal glory but because of course they reflect the high standards and inspiring ambition of the charity as a whole. On receiving his award Derek said: “I am delighted to have been included in this list, firstly because it is my peers who have nominated and recognised my contributions but also because of the other outstanding nurses who are included in the list - I’d like to thank those who nominated me and the nurses who judged this list and included me in it”. As Scotland’s foremost provider of care for veterans and their spouses, Erskine provides unrivalled nursing, residential, respite and dementia care in four homes throughout Scotland.
Veterans champion Derek Barron
It also assists younger veterans who need help to begin the next chapter of their lives, offering social, recreation and training facilities at the charity’s Activity Centre - and employment opportunities in partnership with Scotland’s Bravest Manufacturing Co. On the Erskine Estate in Bishopton there are 44 cottages for veterans and their families, along with newly-added assisted living apartments and 24 single living apartments- a Veterans

A MEDIEVAL MYSTERY MAN Film and literary fiction depictions of medieval Britain often give the impression that the Scots were all snarling, red-haired patriots ready to do battle with toffee-nosed English invaders – with whom they had nothing in common. where he captured the High Sheriff, and had taken part in the Third Crusade (along with Edward I of England and Robert the Bruce’s dad – who were on the same side and, apparently, good friends), and as his son was called Robert it’s perhaps not impossible the Robin Hood myth developed on both sides of the border from a common root.
It’s a simplification that should be laid to rest by the Lennox Heritage Society talk to be given by speaker James Scullion on February 13, when he tells the story of a fascinating character from the days of knights and castles. This year marks the 800th anniversary of the death of David of Huntingdon, who most people may never have heard of, but who played a major role in Scottish history. He was the youngest surviving son of Henry, heir apparent of Scotland, and grandson of David I, but is generally remembered as the Earl of Huntingdon – although, much less known, he was also the Earl of Lennox. However what makes the story really intriguing is the folklore linking him with the legendary
(or was he?) Robin Hood, which appears to have been perpetuated in and around Dumbarton hundreds of years after his death. He was among those besieging Nottingham Castle in 1194,

FILM CONTEST FOR SCHOOLS
West Dunbartonshire schools are being urged to enter the SSPCA’s first ever primary and secondary film competition for youngsters. It’s a project which is reckoned likely to be worthwhile in several different ways – and which promises to give pupils some valuable experience in creating something memorable and effective on film. In the process they will also learn a lot about the SSPCA’s day to day challenges. The charity, best known locally for its rescue and rehoming centre, visits schools every year to deliver a free Prevention
through Education programme, encouraging pupils to become “responsible animal citizens”. The programme links in with many areas of the Curriculum for Excellence and aims to encourage empathy and compassion towards animals. Local primary and secondary schools have been invited to submit a short film that educates the public and pupils about the key animal welfare issues the charity regularly has to tackle.
The competition gives schools the opportunity to engage their students in a creative and cross curricular activity with the opportunity to win prizes for both themselves and the school.
t: 01436
The judging panel will be looking for innovative and creative methods of conveying a key message to the public, in particular to other school students.
SOVEREIGN BLINDS
Scottish SPCA head of education and policy, Gilly Mendes Ferreira said, “Since 2010 we have seen over 300 per cent increase in the number of calls where children have alerted us to animals in need of our help, which saved injured wildlife and uncovered cases of neglect. “We truly believe children are the key to making a real difference to animal welfare in Scotland.” The topics, consent forms, terms and conditions, closing date for submissions and other information about the 2019 Schools Film Competition can be found on the Scottish SPCA website at scottishspca.org/education/. The winning films will be announced in June.

It will be used on the 2019 Road Safety Calendar – which is distributed to all schools, council offices, community education centres, libraries and health centres. Because it is such an eyecatching design it will also help to get over a key message on safety in the most effective way – and the calendar itself will gain wide distribution. Heidi, a primary 7 pupil, was presented with an award and prize by Councillor Iain McLaren and Catherine Tonner, the Council’s Road Safety Coordinator last week.

Councillor McLaren said: “Big congratulations to Heidi, whose design has a great message and is bright and eye catching.
“It will act as a reminder of how to stay safe on the roads when it is displayed across West Dunbartonshire. “Keeping our young residents safe is a top priority for us, and educating them on road safety as well as showing them how they can promote road safety in their communities is vital.” Two other Christie Park students were runners up in the competition

Laura Penny, Head Teacher at the school, was joined by two members of the student council to receive the overall Road Safety Calendar Competition’s trophy for the school. A total of 19 schools took part in the council’s Road Safety Calendar Competition this year, and there were over 600 entries. All the winning entries will be on display at the libraries throughout West Dunbartonshire over the next few months.

BOOST FOR ERSKINE CAUSE Figures now available for the recent annual lunch fundraiser staged by Dunbartonshire Chamber of Commerce reveal it was the organisation’s most successful to date, raising no less than £1,500 for the Erskine veterans’ cause. As most people will know by now this national resource is a charity whose efforts are not restricted to the actual place of that name, and the service it provides is invaluable to people who more than deserve our continued support.
Damon Scott, chief executive of the Dunbartonshire Chamber of Commerce, was delighted with the event: “We have had fantastic feedback across the board and Tim’s speech was particularly well received.
Scottish Chambers of Commerce president Tim Allan set the pace with a keynote speech in which he stressed the role of the SCC in tackling the key challenges facing the economy – of which there are certainly no shortage.
Boclair House provided a suitably prestigious venue where guests were treated to 5 star service and an excellent meal. “The afternoon was topped off with generous donations to our raffle so thanks must go to both

the guests who bought tickets and to those companies who supported our fundraising efforts by donating prizes.
• Bath repairs
“We also enjoyed the support of Chivas Brothers and Clyde Training Solutions who sponsored the event to help make it the success it was.
• Stain removal
“We are already putting plans in place for the 2019 event and have set ourselves the challenge of making next year’s even bigger and better.” The proverbial icing on the cake was, of course, the superb amount of cash raised for one of the country’s most worthy causes – the most raised for the nominated charity at any of the chamber’s previous lunches, doubling the previous figure.
People of all ages – like these young volunteers – are working to support the Erskine veterans cause

This was in part due to a generous donation from the Clydebank-based Sim Property Group of £500.

A council scheme which supports people leaving care gain independent living has been nominated for an award. The Leaving Care Housing Protocol ensures young people who were previously looked after have support to achieve independence and stability in the community. It provides tailored support to people between the ages of 16 and 26, providing them with the securest form of tenancy available to them. They are then offered guidance along the way by a dedicated support worker. The scheme arguably deserves wider recognition, and will be good news for those involved in its planning and management if what they have already achieved gains an award. It has been named as finalist in the Margo Blair Awards, which recognise local authorities which
work hard to improve their services. The overall winner of the award will be announced during the dinner of the Building and Housing Seminar at the Hilton Dunblane Hydro on February 7.

It happened just a few weeks ago, but the annual Shortbread Run in Balloch Park – an outstanding success – may already seem part of the distant past, along with the Christmas and new year celebrations. But while that spectacular early January public outing is certainly unique it’s by no means the end of the story, because the brilliant example set at the very beginning of the year (and right after Hogmanay at that) has set the pace for much more of the same throughout 2019 – every Saturday morning at 9.30am in Balloch Park.
It’s called Run ‘n’ Park, but there’s no need to actually run if you don’t want to or can’t manage that sort of exercise for any reason – with this superb communitarian endeavour it’s very much the taking part that counts. As a reminder for anyone who missed it, the Shortbread Run is so called because Walkers
As the year progresses the weather will obviously get progressively kinder, even if there’s sometimes the odd spot of rain, and for anyone who enjoyed the January excursion there’s arguably every reason to make that weekend jaunt in the park a regular Saturday fixture. Maurice Donohue of organisers West Dunbartonshire Athletics Club says the publicity in Dumbarton Community Advertiser helped produce a bumper 276 participants for the two mile run (or walk) and is delighted with the way things went. He said: “It definitely has a family and community feel, which was always the aim. “Hopefully this event will encourage people to be a little more active as part of their New Year’s resolutions and come along to Run 'n' Park which is on in Balloch Park every Saturday.”

A RESCUE BID FOR CENTRAL By any reasonable definition A-listed but decrepit Dumbarton Central Station is a hideous eyesore in desperate need of remedial action – but what to do about it? Hopefully many readers will have managed to attend the just-finished consultation on the subject at Dumbarton Library, where the public were invited to offer their thoughts on some of the key issues surrounding its years of progressive decay. However if you missed that opportunity you can still add your voice to the debate in a special online survey, whose results can be used to lend strength to the effort to bring about badlyneeded upgrading. Dumbarton Stations Improvement Trust has commissioned one of Scotland’s most experienced conservation architects, Lesley Kerr and her team of five specialist consultants, to produce

a Conservation Management Plan for the ‘A’-Listed Dumbarton Central Station. It is one important step in a process that will hopefully help to formalise a rescue plan for the station, but of course ultimately much will depend on cash – at a time when resources are stretched and our railway system under heavy fire from multiple directions. The Burgh is in the throes of ambitious plans designed to win back some of the lost lustre of yesteryear, and with it some civic pride – the move of the council headquarters to the town centre has been seen as a useful addition to that effort – and when you consider the station is literally

TOWN CENTRE TRAFFIC SNAG
Local motorists will be well aware of the present traffic hiatus at Dumbarton’s Church Street and College Street while Network Rail carry out a repairs programme lasting until mid-March – but there is one crumb of comfort this month. The College Street blockage will be cleared midway through this month, hopefully easing pressure on the town centre generally – and it’s just a few weeks until the whole schedule of works is complete. Network Rail are repainting the bridges at the two respective locations, and while traffic is obviously affected there has been no disruption to train services.
LIFELINE THROWN TO MAID CAN YOU HELP? The Maid of the Loch project hasn’t had its troubles to seek recently, between losing out on a hoped for major lottery grant last year, and a failed attempt to beach her for major renovations last month. TV viewers were horrified to see the boat break free of its ties and reverse at speed back into the water, forcing people to get out of the way in a hurry – a public relations disaster. It was a cruel blow to a campaign which has achieved so much in the face of considerable difficulties, but possibly just one more setback to an effort which continues inexorably towards its final goal. Otherwise things are looking much brighter, thanks to a new grant from the Scottish Government.
That crucial million pounds is reckoned enough to keep this project on its difficult course towards completion. John Beveridge, chairman of the Loch Lomond Steamship Company, said: “This is a huge step forward for us – to be able to spend £1m awarded by the Scottish Government is fantastic and will transform her into an exciting visitor experience”. The Maid currently operates as a static tourist attraction and hopes to gain industrial museum status for the ship and steam slipway.

February 2019 | What's Up Doc?
A LIDL DRINK WON’T HURT…
What's Up Doc? with Dr Nick Dunn
This month: MEDICINE BY NUMBERS...?
The forthcoming Lidl store in Dumbarton has just passed its latest hurdle by gaining a drinks licence, against an objection from the health board – which fears there are already too many off-sales outlets in the Burgh already. Jobs may have been in the minds of the licensing board members who passed the application, because Lidl would have surely pulled the plug had they been denied the element every other supermarket deems essential. There’s no theoretic connection between planning and licensing, but the Lidl plan had already come under fire for its high profile location, within easy view of the Rock and close to an area that’s optimistically seen as ripe for development of its visitor tourism potential – so the licence
application was effectively round two in the bid to bring the new shopping facility (and reportedly up to 60 jobs) to town. High drink consumption is regularly attributed to the number of licences operating in an area, and so too is price – although we don’t know whether Lidl’s famously keen prices was also a factor under review. The debate will continue, but meanwhile the necessary consents for its Dumbarton store to open are now in place, and it should open towards the end of this year.
“You doctors love your numbers!” a patient once remarked to me. On reflection he was partly correct, and sometimes it might seem we are obsessed with figures of blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, weight, units of alcohol etc, etc... However, a bit like painting by numbers, although these help give us an outline, we also realise that the numbers can get in the way of seeing the bigger picture. For GPs this means seeing the whole person, understanding who and what is important to them, and helping them makes sense of information as individuals. Over the past
few decades, medicine has become more “evidencebased”, which helps ensure that the treatments on offer have been shown to make a real difference to the quality and quantity of people’s lives. This has resulted in old treatments sometimes being abandoned as we realise that some have actually caused more harm than good, and this requires large studies collecting thousands of numbers! Fresh information keeps us updated with the latest guidelines which ensure patients get the most effective treatments and advice. So, yes, we do love our numbers... but they are only a means to an end!

CHILDREN ‘MUST COME FIRST’ The recently-appointed new chief social work officer for the area’s health and social care partnership has no doubts about where his priorities lie during his first year in office. Councillor Marie McNair, vice chair of West Dunbartonshire Health and Social Care Partnership, said: “I am delighted to welcome Jonathan to the HSCP and I’m sure his experience and leadership will be of great benefit to the residents in West Dunbartonshire.
Jonathan Hinds has spelled out his commitment to ensuring children in care receive a safe, certain future – and part of that involves taking on board what children and young people have to say when future policies and services are being planned. He said: “I’m delighted to join West Dunbartonshire Health and Social Care Partnership (HSCP), and to continue to deliver excellent services to residents.
“I look forward to working with him to Jonathan Hinds strengthen the services we provide to children, young people and their families. He began his career in 1999 as a

West Dunbartonshire HSCP Chief Officer Beth Culshaw added: “It is great to have someone of his calibre and experience joining us and I’m sure his extensive knowledge and experience will be a real asset.”
Jonathan also spent four years as Chair of East Renfrewshire Fostering and Adoption Panel.
Jonathan replaces Jackie Irvine, who has left to take up a promoted post in Edinburgh.

February 2019 | 2 the 1 I Love
2 the 1 I Love
Celebrated on February 14th, it is often marked by giving gifts to and spending time with loved ones. Valentine's Day traditions include exchanging gifts, such as chocolates or roses, and a romantic night out on the town. Origins of Valentine’s Day A popular theory says that Emperor Claudius II didn’t want Roman men to marry during wartime, but a priest called Valentine performed secret weddings, but was discovered and sentenced to death. On the eve of his execution he sent a card to the jailer’s daughter, signed “From your Valentine”. The first Valentine’s Day It is widely believed that the first Valentine’s day was in the year 496. The Romans had a festival called Lupercalia in the middle of February – officially the start of their springtime. It's thought that as part of the celebrations,

boys drew names of girls from a box. They'd be boyfriend and girlfriend during the festival and sometimes they'd get married. Later on, the church wanted to turn this festival into a Christian celebration and decided to use it to remember St Valentine too. Why February 14? King Henry VII officially declared February 14 as the holiday of St. Valentine’s Day in 1537 – and it has stuck ever since.

century. Across the world an estimated one billion Valentine’s Day cards are exchanged each year, making it the second most popular card giving time of the year after Christmas. Why are red roses traditional? Venus – the Roman Goddess of Love’s favourite flower was the red rose. An estimated 50 million roses are sent on Valentine’s Day around the world.

Christmas seems a long time ago now, but for anyone who helped West Dunbartonshire Community Foodshare’s festive effort there’s good news – because recentlyreleased figures show the drive to ensure no children were missed by Santa Claus was a stunning success. The Christmas Toybank supported no less than 653 children by giving them new toys to open on Christmas morning, a result also made possible by the tireless foodshare elves who worked so hard to complete the orders in time for the big day. The message from Foodshare is a big thankyou, with the comment: ”What a fantastic community we have!”

It is free to make a claim and you can even do it yourself. A good place to start would be for you to check old loan or mortgage statements. It may be worthwhile noting that a claim can be made on behalf of the deceased and any subsequent award would then form part of their estate. Please remember the deadline date because once it has gone no claims will be accepted and you may miss out unnecessarily.

OUTDOOR SHOW RETURNS
Commercial & Domestic Cleaners
15% OFF Oven, Carpet & Upholstery Cleaning
d ... Organisers are promising a bigger and better Scottish Cycling, Running and Outdoor Pursuits Show (SCROPS) in 2019. Many local people were disappointed when the actionpacked event, which takes place at Glasgow’s SEC, was unavoidably cancelled last year due to bad weather caused by the Beast from the East. Tickets have now gone on sale for the show from March 2 to 3 with a 20% discount for pre-booking. If you purchased a ticket last year, it will be honoured in 2019. Julia Girvan, of organiser PSP Media Group, said: “We were just as disappointed with last year’s unfortunate cancellation

BID TO BUILD NEW MARKETS Brexit is the elephant in the room where business is concerned, and amid the continuing uncertainty over how local firms will be affected any new initiative designed to promote business can only be welcomed. So Dunbartonshire Chamber of Commerce was understandably enthusiastic about the important event staged at prestigious East Dunbartonshire venue Kilmardinny House at the end of last month. It was a launch session for the Chamber’s International Trade Programme, designed to help local businesses access growth opportunities and expand their customer base. Much more seems certain to follow from the start of this important initiative, which aims to bring practical focus to the aim of bringing local products and services to new and existing markets. Dunbartonshire Chamber of Commerce chief executive Damon Scott said: “International Trade offers a huge opportunity for a wide range of businesses to take their product or
service to new and growing marketplaces. “From Ireland to China and everywhere in between, the value of international trade is immense as more and more nations develop and demand increases. “With the uncertainty surrounding Brexit now is the perfect time to look beyond the UK and possibly Europe.” Dunbartonshire Businessman, Stephen Mitchell, an International Trade and Business Adviser with Your Export Consultants, was on hand to provide an expert insight into the opportunities, value and practicalities of trading internationally. Damon Scott, added: “The Scottish Government has committed £2 million to the chambers to help

Scottish companies to trade internationally as part of their export growth plan. “This will see a programme of activity, including trade missions, which will help Scottish businesses to access opportunities in international markets. “Businesses will be able to establish global business links and build exporting capacity utilising our extensive and farreaching international business network.” To find out more about the Chamber's activities or to book for any of the Chamber events visit www. dunbartonshirechamber.co.uk.

fun CHECK OUT THE BIRDS IN THE SKY! If a woman saw a robin flying overhead on Valentine’s Day, it meant she would marry a sailor. If she saw a sparrow, she would marry a poor man and be very happy. If she saw a goldfinch, she would marry a rich person.
hacks IT’S ALWAY THE LITTLE THINGS Instead of waiting all day to turn on the romance, plan a little surprise for your love first thing in the morning. STORY OF A GERMAN PIRATE
The amazing story of Great War legend Kapitan Felix Von Luckner and his Clydebuilt vessel Seeadler (Sea Eagle) is the theme of the March lecture at the Drymen Historical Society on Thursday, March 28 – following on from a talk at the Lennox Heritage Society last year. Ken Colville will be telling the tale of how this remarkable commerce raider led the allied fleets on a merry dance as he plundered his way across the oceans in a ship originally named Pass of Balmaha. You’ll find further details of Society times, meetings and membership at www.drymenhistory.org.uk.
MATINEE AT THE MUSICALS 2!
Post-Christmas debt can push people in the direction of payday loans. A YouGov survey predicted a spend of well over ÂŁ800 per household during the Christmas period alone.
Following the success of last year’s sell-out show, ‘Matinee at the Musicals 2’ is taking place on Sunday 24th February at 2.30pm and 7.30pm at The Tower Digital Arts Centre, Helensburgh. The music-loving cast of 20 kids and 20 adults from Helensburgh, Dumbarton and the surrounding area will perform songs from musicals such as The Greatest Showman, Oliver, Little Shop of Horrors and Sunshine on Leith. The event is a fundraiser for the Beatson Cancer Charity, Myeloma UK and The Tower. Last year over ÂŁ4000 was raised.
Tickets are still available priced ÂŁ10.50 and can be purchased from The Tower or at helensburghboxoffice.com. Please join us for what promises to be another fantastic show!

Unfortunately, much of the spending is made with credit and debit cards, and even worse with extremely expensive payday loans which may lead some families into debt well into the new year. Anyone who needs advice on budgeting saving, credit and borrowing, mortgages, insurance, pensions and retirement planning can get the help of a trained money adviser through CAB's money advice service. To book an appointment in Dumbarton 01389 744690 or Alexandria 01389 729271, or visit www.wdcab.co.uk.

HIT THE STREETS RUNNING With the Babcock 10k Series just around the corner we thought some advice on how to get you started for anyone thinking of trying it out. Last years’ female winner of all three Babcock races Katie White tells us how she did it. Katie also offers advice on a training programme for runners of all abilities. We will run a three part series which will include words of advice from Katie and a Training Programme for Beginners, programmes for Intermediate and Advanced levels can also be found on our website www. communityadvertiser.co.uk/ training. Profile I never really planned to take up running and it certainly wasn’t something that I thought I would be any good at. In 2011 I entered my local village 10K and was surprised by how much I enjoyed it, so I started doing a bit of running as an alternative to going to the gym. A couple of months later I ran another 10K and surprised myself, and everyone else by winning it.
After the race I was persuaded by some of the members of Garscube Harriers to go along to a training session and before I knew it running became a big part of my life. Now I regularly compete in cross country, road and trail races, mainly around the Glasgow area but I have also had the opportunity to run Internationally. With the help and support of everyone at Garscube I have been able to continue to improve my times; In 2018, in addition to running my 10K personal best at Helensburgh 10K, I also ran personal bests in half and full marathons. Although I enjoy competing, I think one of the best things about running is that anyone can do it anywhere. I have made some great friends through running and would encourage anyone to give it a go.
Katie White
Training plans 10K is a great race distance as it is something that with a little bit of training anyone should be capable of completing and with a bit more experience it is possible to make big improvements in your time. I am not a coach but based on my own experience I have put together three training programmes. The aim of all three training programmes is to gradually increase your fitness so that you are able to run further (beginners’ programme) or faster. The beginners’ programme is designed for people who don’t currently run regularly or have never completed a 10K race before.
The intermediate plan is suitable for people who can already run 10K and the advanced programme is for people who run regularly and want to improve their personal best. Although the schedules are structured to help you achieve the optimum training, they are just a guideline, don’t worry if you have to miss a run or need to adjust them a little to fit in with your other commitments. Also, as these are generic plans, you might also need to adjust them to suit your current level of fitness and experience. Look out for the first part of the 10 week programme in our next issue.
