RING-SIDE SEAT FOR TV EPIC It’s still at the gossipy “might happen” stage, but the level of activity shown by movie location scouts over recent weeks points to just one thing – West Dunbartonshire is in pole position to serve as the setting for a massive new A-list TV Series. We’re talking about a prequel for Lord of the Rings, the vast and elaborate fairy tale spun by author JRR Tolkien and in modern times translated into a movie epic of Wagnerian dimensions by Peter Jackson. Movie buffs will recall that the original Lord of the Rings movies took themselves off to New Zealand, of all places, apparently on the grounds that it has some excellent mountain scenery that fits the bill for a Middle Earth landscape. Well, much nearer home we have a few mountains too – and, as film-makers internationally have discovered, a wealth of fantastic seascapes, lochs, forests, and all

the other locations you might need if you were plotting a return to Tolkien’s evergreen nevernever land. Now the Scotsman newspaper has revealed that a new Lord of the Rings television series is to be filmed in Scotland, with a whole list of potential sites earmarked for the production. Scouts from Amazon Studios are said to have posed as “tourists” (great for the local economy in mid-February) while checking locations in places including Balloch Castle Country Park, Perthshire and Skye. If even one scene from this production were to feature Balloch and Loch Lomond

These three productions have really put Scotland on the film map, and in Balloch’s case there’s the signal advantage that the location is very close to movie production infrastructure around Glasgow – and its airport. The forthcoming series is reputedly the biggest in TV history, with a budget of £1billion, and is being produced by Amazon (who are said to have paid £200million for the

global rights needed to create the adaptation) with the help of publishers Harper Collins, New Line Cinema and the Tolkien Estate. “Made for TV” used to mean “a bit cheap”, but Outlaw King – which until now has had the largest budget spend of any film made in Scotland – put paid to that. It has been a huge success worldwide, and it now seems likely some comparable high profile action Lord of the Rings will be coming to the bonny banks. If all goes to plan the production will be released some time in 2021.

SHORES SET FOR A BUSY YEAR In this issue we’re able to herald the welcome return of Springfest to Loch Lomond Shores, but the good news for the lochside venue’s many local fans is that this particular two-day event will be just the start of a more ambitious programme. After what seems to have been a long, quiet spell the Shores has a “a new management team with a fresh outlook”, armed with a coveted five star rating from VisitScotland. The new facilities manager, Andrew Dalgleish, said: “The site team and I are really focused on making sure Loch Lomond Shores is a cracking destination for both local people and tourists. “Our VisitScotland report included lots of praise on the maintenance and cleanliness of the site which is essential if we want our customers to have a good experience.

“Over the course of 2019 I’ll also be working to identify any areas we can improve upon in terms of the facilities on offer at Loch Lomond Shores, as well as playing a key part in any developments or refurbishments scheduled in the coming year.” Audrey Calder, another new team member who is responsible for marketing and events, has previously worked at Loch Lomond Shores and knows the site well. She said: “I’m really excited to be back and to work hard to make Loch Lomond shores a buzzing

venue for events and promote this unique site and all it has to offer, including a great day out for families. “I am aware that many local people were disappointed that no big events happened during 2018 so my focus is very much on reintroducing old favourites and looking at new events we can host because we’re a brilliant venue for so many things”. Meanwhile it’s been confirmed Jenners, after some changes of its own, is confirmed set to be a steady long term presence at the Shores.

In what probably qualifies as the first major local day-out opportunity of the year Springfest is back at Loch Lomond Shores in a few weeks time. Bringing with it a programme of cookery demos, children’s games, and plenty of opportunities to sample top notch cuisine of many different kinds. The event runs over two days, so if you have the time you won’t have to squeeze everything into a single afternoon’s outing – and while we don’t yet have the full programme line-up on past form that’s a consideration arguably well worth bearing in mind.

It’s a family-oriented experience, so if you’re taking children you can be assured they won’t be bored and fractious while you savour the finer points of the excellent array of fresh local produce typically available. It’s dog-friendly too, so you can take your four-legged family member along too. The dates are April 6 and 7, and we’ll provide an update on how the programme is likely to be shaping up in the near future – and you can also check progress online via the Love Loch Lomond website.

It’s at the RSPB Loch Lomond Nature Hub, High Wards Farm, in Gartocharn from 5.30pm to 7.30pm, and costs £7.50, or £6 for members (and booking is essential). Even people with little if any sporting knowledge will remember some key dates – 1966 often rings a faint bell down south, for example – and for some these memories are truly golden. Sporting Memories Foundation Scotland, now operating locally, is the first charity of its kind to be dedicated to the development and use of sports reminiscence, inclusive physical activities and intergenerational activities to support isolated older people across the country. That crucial goal of yesteryear - or it may be a heroic try at Murrayfield – can for some people create a lifelong happy memory which can be used to stimulate the imagination in many other useful and engaging ways. The Sporting Memories Foundation Scotland is the charitable arm of award winning Sporting Memories Network Scotland, a

social enterprise that runs weekly sporting memories clubs and groups – and now operates in Dumbarton. It brings together older people living with long term conditions such as dementia through sporting reminiscence and physical activities, with the aim of improving wellbeing and reducing loneliness and social isolation. Using images of sport, articles and memorabilia, older people are assisted to stay connected to their friends and communities, cognitively stimulated and physically active. As well as other activities in the West Dunbartonshire area there is a Sporting Memories Club at

Dumbarton Library on every Monday – 10am to noon, and anyone interested in attending the club as a member or looking to volunteer, should contact Maurice Donohue on Tel: 07393 284406 or e-mail: maurice@thesmf.co.uk for further details. Maurice Donohue, Chief Operating Officer said: “This is another exciting development in our aims to support older people across Scotland and to connect generations through the power of sport. “It is crucial we enable more people to be physically active and involved in fun, stimulating interests that help create new friendships.”

LEGION NEEDS ITS RECRUITS A 21st Century Legion of local volunteers is being recruited to act as wall guides to one of the area’s greatest historical legacies – the route of the Antonine Wall through West Dunbartonshire. The new initiative is part of a scheme covering the whole length of the ancient fortified barrier between the Forth and Clyde, and will bring the moss-covered remains fully to life in a way never managed before. Volunteer guides will explain the intricacies of local stretches of the wall and have the chance to visit landmark sites down south. People with an eye for history and heritage are needed to help explain to visitors just how today’s innocuous landscape was once the stormy frontier of the Roman Empire, only to become a relic of past glories when Rome’s long domination of Europe and the Middle East finally came to an end.

These trips will aim to give those taking part ideas they can bring back, ideas they can use to promote local heritage, and will probably involve visits to high profile sites (for example Housesteads and Vindolanda) linked to Hadrian’s Wall. They will probably be amazed to find that correspondence

written by a Roman governor two millennia ago has been fully translated – his rough copy letters, etched on wood, were recovered from an ancient skip and painstakingly transcribed – and much more besides.

Volunteers will build on this sort of detail, and local initiatives, by explaining to visitors - for example - how the distance slabs put up by Roman legionaries to mark their building achievements were once fully painted in vivid colours. Recruits will be given both expenses and training for their important role in helping to build further understanding both of the wall and the ruthlessly efficient society which created it.

NATIONAL GLORY FOR THE NEWS It’s not the first honour won by Balloch store Loch Lomond News – but the outlet’s recent title win in the National Federation of Retail Newsagents Awards is still a massive achievement. As many local and visiting customers will know, the store is no ordinary newsagent and has a thing about collectables – the constantly changing must-haves that many shops find too much trouble to be bothered with. Owner Andy Howell and his staff cater for a whole swathe of customers who look forward to their regular visits to Balloch to see the latest products available.

broadcaster Trevor McDonald at a prestigious ceremony in London. Andy says that “simply looking after our customers” led to the News being a contender in the national awards – and with the national title win he and his staff have again been acknowledged as the best in the business.

Visitors to Dumbarton’s Levengrove Park are now promised delicious homemade food and hot drinks at the newly opened Pavilion Café. The café, which is part of a £2.6m Heritage Lottery Funding investment in the park, is open every day from 10am to 4pm, selling a selection of tasty home baking. Customers can order hot and cold filled rolls and freshly made soup, all cooked and prepared on the premises.

Collectables are a consumer phenomenon so firmly established in popular culture that even people with no interest in finding out more have at least heard of Pokemon – but of course it’s much more complicated than that. Now the skill and attention to detail by the Loch Lomond News team has brought the Collectable Product of the Year award home to Balloch – it was presented by

SNAKES NEED GOOD HOME They may not be everybody’s idea of an ideal pet, but the Scottish SPCA is trying to find local animal-lovers who have a thing about reptiles – and the commitment to give one a loving home. Scotland’s animal welfare charity often cares for snakes for years before they find their new families, and currently has more than 20 on its books. Snowflake is the Scottish SPCA’s longest serpent resident, having been in the charity’s care for over 1,870 days, and counting. It can be hard enough finding good homes for cats and dogs, but not everyone either wants to or is able to care for a snake – and yet those who like them say they really do make ideal pets for those who appreciate their very distinctive presence.

They do need special care and attention, but possibly not much more than you’d expend on a typical family pet dog. “Although they don't play fetch or come when you call their name, snakes are great pets for any animal lover. “It’s not uncommon for snakes

to stay with us for years before being rehomed but we’re positive we can find a suitable owner for every animal in our care. “Anyone looking to take on a snake needs to be dedicated and have the time and commitment to ensure they receive the specialist care and attention they need to be happy and healthy.” If you are interesting in rehoming a snake, or any other animal, you can contact the Scottish SPCA on 03000 999 999 or visit www. scottishspca.org/rehome.

Scottish SPCA rescue and rehoming centre superintendent Sharon Comrie said, “Sadly we don't receive many enquiries about our snakes. “We find a lot of people are put off by their appearance. We understand that snakes aren’t for everyone but we feel they are often overlooked as pets.

OUR A-LIST VICTORIAN CASTLE

ALAN ROBINSON

DOMESTIC APPLIANCE REPAIRS

West Dunbartonshire is strewn with Gothic follies that look a bit like castles, thanks to a vogue for imposing baronial-style mansions among the Victorian rich and famous. But some of them, for example Dalmoak Castle, have a more interesting history than most. Currently on the market through property firm Savills this landmark building is on a hill between Dumbarton and Renton, and was built in the 1860’s. It has lots of eccentric period details, for example “gun loops”, armorial plaques, and magnificent Corinthian columns.

Then there’s the beautiful stained glass windows depicting Celtic mythological scenes – thought to be the largest of any private house in the UK. There are 14 bedrooms, a drawing room, study, music room and formal dining room, not to mention tower rooms, and a roof terrace on the fourth floor. It was all built for the enjoyment of a chap called John Aiken (1801 – 1875) by the noted architect

STORIES OF OLD KILPATRICK

PHIL’S FITBA’ FITNESS IS FUN

Tuesday 5th

Walking football is good fun and exercise for all

This month’s Lennox Heritage Society talk offers a fascinating insight into a village just “up the road” from Dumbarton, one which has a considerable story to tell. Dr David Walker’s theme is the village’s lottery-supported oral history project, in which a great deal of detail that might otherwise be lost to posterity is being preserved for all time. This latest session is on Wednesday, March 13. Heritage Society meetings are at 7pm in the Concord Centre in Dumbarton, and the cost of an annual subscription is £10 – or you can choose to pay £2 to attend a single talk.

Late News

Most of us have fond memories of playing football as a youngster, and some – like local man Phil Dawson, a former football coach – can draw on much more recent experience. But while older people aren’t suddenly going to turn into Premier League players it doesn’t mean that in later life football is something you can enjoy only on television.

For some people it’s a lot more interesting than simply going for a walk, and also creates opportunities for friendly socialising among people of a similar age group.

Phil has been busily pioneering the concept of Walking Football, which is reckoned one of the country’s fastest-growing activity sports for the more mature set.

Even if you literally haven’t kicked a ball for 20 years you may be surprised to find that some of the skills you may have acquired in youth haven’t entirely gone.

As the name suggests you don’t run anywhere, and the team competition is as relaxed as any game of football can possibly be – and, perhaps most importantly, is a great deal of fun.

Meanwhile you are getting the best sort of exercise, without consciously putting in a lot of strenuous effort. To find out more contact Phil at phildawson1335@me.com.

March 2019 | What's Up Doc?

What's Up Doc? with Dr Nick Dunn

This month: NEW BEGINNINGS…

FINDING OUT ABOUT PROBUS Dumbarton is lucky to have its own active Probus Club, but some people who could enjoy it most – namely retired or semi-retired people – may not yet know exactly what it does. Its membership is based on professional and business people, but that covers a very wide range of previous careers and backgrounds. There are retired teachers, engineers, shopkeepers, tradesmen and retired council employees in the club, just as some examples. New people are always welcome, and anyone interested in finding out more – and enjoying a nice evening in good company – is welcome to get in touch. There are regular speakers on a diverse array of subjects, and recent topics have included

shipbuilding on the River Clyde, The Great Wall of China and The Waverley. The club has also enjoyed visits from “some very special people” who have done voluntary work in Africa, India and Israel. The main purpose of Dumbarton’s Probus Club is to provide a regular meeting point (and lively social forum) for retired people – it’s not a fundraising organisation, and its meetings are interesting and varied. For further information contact Donald Fotheringham, tel 01389 753 267 or email donvick@blueyonder.co.uk.

Spring... the season of growth and new beginnings, including newborn babies! Each week Scotland sees a thousand new births, the most popular names of 2018 being Jack and Olivia. Every mother has her unique story, but there are some common messages for those considering pregnancy. Pregnancy planning should include getting your body into good physical shape. Regular exercise, healthy weight and balanced diet are important. During pregnancy alcohol is best avoided to reduce risk of brain damage to the developing baby, smoking and excess caffeine can affect the baby’s growth during pregnancy, and

avoiding soft cheeses, raw eggs and shellfish reduce the risk of infections which could endanger the pregnancy. Iron helps make extra blood required, Vitamin D for healthy teeth and bone growth, and Folic Acid helps reduce the risk of spina bifida problems, so these can be taken as vitamin pills for pregnant women. When pregnant the first step is to see a midwife rather than a GP. They are specially trained to look after women before, during and after the birth, and will be able to answer questions you may have. A really helpful website –

www.readysteadybaby.org.uk – is worth checking out and has lots of info for future mums and dads!

That’s the message from countryside rangers, as they prepare a programme of achievable tasks and other initiatives – for example wildlife surveys – designed to transform the park into a landmark amenity of the sort local people can be proud of. With the National Park virtually “next door” it can be seen that sustained development could eventually give the area one of the very finest – maybe even the best – array of open air amenities anywhere in the country.

ARMY CADETS RECRUITING

MONOPRINTING FOOD LAW TEAM IS THE BEST Everyone likes to know WITH MAEVE that a restaurant, bar or café is up to scratch when it comes to good hygiene practice – and of course the same goes for shops.

The Dunbarton West Company of the Army Cadet Force is recruiting new cadets and adult volunteers. Based in Dumbarton, they wear the Royal Regiment of Scotland headdress with the 5 SCOTS (Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders) green hackle. There are seven detachments based in Arrochar (Tuesday), Clydebank (Monday and Wednesday), Dumbarton (Monday and Wednesday) Garelochhead (Tuesday), Helensburgh (Monday), Milngavie (Monday) & Vale of Leven (Tuesday and Thursday) The Company regularly turns out 90 to 120 cadets with adult instructors. Further details contacts and updates on meetings armycadets. com/county/argyll-and-sutherlandhighlanders-battalion-acf

But fewer people probably know that the local environmental health team’s food and business group has itself achieved the highest rating in Scotland for a food authority.

Every now and then a truly “different” creative arts class comes long, and Maeve Dixon’s fascinating monoprints session definitely comes into that category. Publicity for the class, at Dumbarton Library on March 9, mentions the classic French artist Edgar Degas (perhaps best known for his studies of ballerinas), and his mastery of monoprinting is an inspiration for today’s artists. Maeve will be showing those taking part just how he achieved his amazing works of art, and explaining how to make your own marvellous monoprints. It doesn’t “just” cover hygiene, but a wide spectrum of foodrelated issues which also include, for example, food fraud, and its importance to everyday life for thousands of people can hardly be overstated. It’s a success which won’t earn big headlines in newspapers, but which recognises exceptional ability and efficiency – and everything which that implies for the way food law is managed across West Dunbartonshire.

It means the team’s procedures are effective in supporting the delivery of their objectives, which include supporting business compliance with food law, tackling food fraud and protecting and improving public health in West Dunbartonshire. Just one other local authority in Scotland has achieved the rating to date. Councillor Ian Dickson, Convener of Corporate Services, said: “I am delighted to see our food authority gain the highest rating in Scotland. “Our Environmental Health team work extremely hard to ensure that food standards are kept high across West Dunbartonshire.”

BENEFITS OF A HEALTHY WALK IN GOOD HANDS FOR 21 YEARS New Image hair studio opened in January 1998, and the team have been cutting the hair of men, women and kids since then, that’s 21 years!!

When people haven’t been active for a while, possibly through illness, they’re often told it would be good for them to get “some fresh air and exercise” – but sometimes it can be hard to get started. Health Walks Dunbartonshire have been organising outdoor sessions for more than four years, and have launched new ways of making it easier for some of those who might benefit the most from taking part. A spokesperson for the group said: “Health walkers can enjoy a whole range of benefits including increased fitness, improved mood and increased social interactions with local people, and the local area. “Health Walks can start at 15 minutes for new walkers and

last up to an hour, depending on fitness. “They are free and open to anyone that wants to take their first step towards a more active and healthier lifestyle.” There are also established walks in Alexandria, Dumbarton, Clydebank, and Old Kilpatrick, with walks down to Bowling for walkers that are a little bit more active and would like to start with a one hour walk. For more information contact project lead Daren Borzynski on 0141 941 0886 or email daren@wdcvs.com for more information.

Founded by Mary McAdam, the talented team includes Sarah, who’s been there from the beginning, and Nicola. Mary has been hairdressing for almost 50 years, and is also qualified to teach, so not only are you in good hands with her, she’s an expert in sharing her skills and knowledge with the team. Their longevity and outstanding reputation has been built on their ability to offer classic looks, and cutting edge styles, in a relaxed and friendly environment.

In January they celebrated their anniversary with a party for customers, where they raised £640 between CLIC Sargent and Cancer Research UK. To continue to say thank you to customers for their support New Image are offering a ‘Parent & Child’ deal in the month of April, a full paying adult can bring a kid for a free trim! (Quote ‘Parent & Child’, offer is subject to availability, children up to 10 years.) New Image Hair Studio is located at 202 Bank Street, Alexandria, 01389 752 806.

WAITERS ARE LIBRARY SET TO HOST MUSEUM TO GO TOPLESS

longer constrained to be simply places where you can borrow books.

It may be March, but possibly still a little chilly to go around “taps aff” – unless you are one of a number of public-spirited lads who don’t mind divesting some essential outerwear in a good cause. Local woman Agnes Connelly is running a Ladies Charity Night in aid of Alzheimer/ Dementia Scotland in the Celtic Club’s Dumbarton Kilmour Suite on Saturday, March 30 at 7.30pm. Possibly because of unusually effective central heating at the venue there will be Topless Waiters at the event – and best of luck to them. Tickets, priced £5, are available at the door on the night.

Alexandria Library

Alexandria has a fascinating history, and many community achievements worth preserving, but until now there’s been little in the area to recognise the town’s distinctive heritage. All that seemed about to change this month, with news that the area’s Cultural Committee were set to consider exciting proposals that will create a dedicated museum space in Alexandria Library – as part of work which would also include installing a lift. That important meeting was set to take place as this issue went to press, but progress is definitely on the cards.

Assuming it all goes to plan the library, dating from 1884, is said to be one of the area’s most popular branches, yet has no disabled access to the first floor – something many would agree definitely needs to be remedied.

The whole thrust of the plan is in keeping with imaginative developments which have already taken place elsewhere, and should amount to a whole new lease of life for a building that has weathered the century and more of its existence fairly well – but which many would agree needs to be given some early 21st century special treatment. Malcolm Bennie, Strategic Lead for Communications, Culture and Communities, said: “This proposal would open up the first-floor of Alexandria Library to those with accessibility issues for the first time.

“The new museum would celebrate the history of Alexandria and provide a new attraction for visitors to the area, and the new multi-use space would have numerous benefits to offer the local Beyond that the project also envisages the creation of a series community and the library.” We’ll have more on this of multi-purpose rooms for interesting local development in community use, in recognition future issues. of the fact that libraries are no

hacks AN EXCERCISE IN CLEANING A good spring clean increases the heart rate and burns calories. For example, an hour of heavy cleaning, such as vacuuming, burns approximately 250 calories.

fun ST PATRICK’S SHAMROCK St Patricks Day takes place on 17th, but how did the shamrock become associated with the Saint? According to Irish legend, he used the three-leafed plant as a metaphor for the Holy Trinity when he was first introducing Christianity to Ireland.

A START-UP WITH PURPOSE Call out for local entrepreneur to receive enough survey responses to fund 5 mental health support sessions at SAMH. Jacqueline Bruce has pledged to donate to the Scottish Association for Mental Health once 100 people fill in her business survey, on her Twitter and Instagram bio. The cause is very important to her, as her own family has suffered the trauma of loss: “It is an issue close to my heart as my younger cousin sadly took his own life. I have supported mental health charities since, as suicide and depression must be tackled – it’s an important part of our wellbeing that we must learn to deal with”. Jacqueline is in the early stages of a fresh start-up for Scotland, and one with purpose. She is on a mission to launch products that will be healthy for people, their bathrooms and the planet. Her wish is also to revive hemp weaving in Scotland, and through social fairness, and

charitable means, give back to the community. She intends to be an active entrepreneur in the circular economy movement, Cradle to Cradle, and ultimately aims to achieve Cradle to Cradle certification for her business. The economic movement goal is that all materials remain in a continuous loop of use, repair, reuse, remanufacture and when no longer viable, are then recycled. She is starting by producing innovative shower curtains that are made of hemp: a natural fibre that is waterproof by its very nature and incorporating a

detachable base that can be dried after showering, to prevent any unhealthy mould and mildew growth on the curtain. By doing so, she is closing the loop on wasteful plastic curtains and glass shower screens. Jacqueline is from Dumbarton and after 16 years of a marketing career is turning her hobby of sewing bathroom accessories into a business. With her marketing prowess and with local support, she aims to become a profit for purpose. Further info: IG or Twitter: @beundisturbed Website: undisturbed.me.uk.

MATT’S SET FOR EVEREST RUN

GAS CENTRAL HEATING ENGINEERS

A Balloch man who has already scored major success in high profile running events – and worked as a volunteer on behalf of Disaster Aid UK and Ireland in Indonesia – aims to make 2019 his Everest year. Matt Gemmell wants to tackle the Original Everest Marathon, which could put even the West Highland Triple Crown events to shame, and beyond that has a longer term goal of running a marathon 50 years after his first. His objectives might seem a tall order, as he is now 59, but the veteran runner believes he is fitter and healthier than ever before. He also volunteers with Children’s Hospice Association Scotland at Robin House at Balloch, among many other activities. Matt said: “I first ran a marathon in 1982 and I feel I am running as well as I ever have in my late 50s. I am fortunate because I retired from the police at the age of 55 and this has allowed me the time to train very consistently and thus keep my fitness levels up. “I’m slower at running but I think

my stamina is as good, if not better than ever.” Matt says he has been fortunate to enjoy good health and fitness all of his life. He said: “Growing up, I played every sport but particularly football, cricket, cycling, badminton and golf.

ON YOUR MARKS… Katie White, female winner of all three Babcock 10k races last year, gives you a head start with her 10 week training programme. This month we give you the first 5 weeks of the beginners’ programme which has three runs a week, each separated by rest days. Rest days don’t need to be completely inactive. (please visit our website www. communityadvertiser.co.uk for intermediate & advanced programmes). The runs on Tuesdays and Thursdays are shorter than at the weekend and aim to reduce the need to take walking breaks. On Saturdays the aim is to gradually increase the total time you spend active to build up endurance so that you are able to complete 10K. All the runs are based on time rather than distance so all you need is a watch.

Week 1 All the sessions have short periods of running with walking breaks. Try to keep moving continuously and maintain a brisk walking pace in between the running – you should still be able to recover enough to be able to run again. Week 2 The length of time spent running is slightly longer. Hopefully you are starting to get in to a regular routine and have found a suitable time in the day where you can prioritise running.
