HM SOUP KITCHEN STARS A group of dedicated St Peter the Apostle High School pupils have been given a rare, by royal appointment honour – for working in a soup kitchen. Their project has been gathering pace since 2013, and has now won top-level recognition in the form of a Queen’s Award for Voluntary Services. The proud pupils along with John Sangster, principal teacher of pupil support, received the award medal at a special ceremony from Lord Lieutenant for Dunbartonshire Michael Gregory OBE.

The grandchildren of a Dumbarton man awarded Britain’s highest military honour for his bravery in the First World War were recently able to see one final – and permanent – tribute taking place in his home town. John Brown Hamilton was awarded the Victoria Cross in 1917 for his actions during the carnage of Passchendaele, after repeatedly risking his life to take ammunition to comrades under heavy fi re. He carried bandoliers of ammunition “several times” in full view of enemy snipers and

“The Victoria Cross is linked to acts of extreme bravery and the early paperwork associated with the medal stated that it should only be awarded for gallantry of the highest order. “I know that John Brown Hamilton VC’s family is very proud of his actions on that day and I, once again, thank them for his service.”

He died on July18, 1973, and his ashes were scattered at Daldowie Crematorium.

Few of us will ever experience anything close to the horror and terror that he did, and it says so much about his character that he acted so bravely in the face of such adversity.”

As part of the commemorations leading up to next year’s centenary of the end of the First World War, the UK Government asked for paving stones to be laid

KEEP THE PLOT ON NOV 5 What used to be called “Guy Fawkes Night is now “fireworks night for displays right across the country, because people are possibly no longer very interested in a 17th century attempt to blow up Westminster and kill King James VI and I. Any joy the country felt at the Stuart monarch’s salvation – the plot failed, of course – has faded long ago, and only the fi reworks remain. So yet again the man who inspired a nationwide explosion of expensive pyrotechnics – one Guy Fawkes - doesn’t get a mention, but the local show remains one of the Burgh’s big must-do family events of the year. On past form the Levengrove Park display (Saturday, November 4, 7pm to 9pm) promises to be pretty special, whatever it’s all supposed to be about. The display – which will begin at 7.30pm prompt (so get there

transport as many of the streets around the park will have parking restrictions in place. People are being urged not to bring their own fi reworks or sparklers as these can present a safety issue within large crowds.

There will also be family entertainment before and after the event including a children’s funfair, and hot food will be available too.

They are also advised to leave pets at home – most animals are terrifi ed of fi reworks - and to follow the advice from the stewards at all times.

Around 5,000 spectators are expected to attend, so you’re advised to arrive in plenty of time. If possible you should either walk to the park or use public

It’s also a good idea to wrap up warm, as you may fi nd yourself standing around in the cold for a while – but it will probably be worth it.

SCHEME NEEDS HELPERS West Dunbartonshire Active Schools has launched a drive to recruit a batch of new volunteers to join its current pool of more than 300. Following news that for the fi rst time more than 100,000 attendances were recorded at Active Schools sessions in West Dunbartonshire in a single school year, the scheme aims to ensure even more youngsters can try a variety of sports and physical activities – so there’s an obvious need for more helpers. Every school in West Dunbartonshire offers Active Schools sessions in partnership with sportscotland, the national agency for sport, and parents and grandparents are encouraged to get involved this school year. West Dunbartonshire Active Schools Co-ordinator Louise Morrison said: “The benefits of physical activity are obvious and we love working with the children to make them more active.

“But we can’t do our job without the help of our volunteers, and while we are fortunate and thankful to have more than 300 volunteers in West Dunbartonshire, we really need even more.â€? Local volunteer Pauline Butchart said of the scheme: “My children have been fortunate and have experienced many clubs and activities. “Without volunteers, this wouldn’t have been possible. Seeing the children come along so enthusiastic and full of chat ďż˝ it can make your day.â€?

VITAL FUNDS FOR CHILDREN takes place at Robin House and the other CHAS resource, Rachel House. Hearing this fi rst hand account of just what is involved, and just how much it all means, was a moving experience. The bottom line is that there is simply no comparable organisation able to provide the sort of support CHAS is able to provide for children and their families, and at the centre of that effort is the continual need to bring in vital funds to keep the whole endeavour properly resourced. Community Fundraiser Samantha Reilly receives the time-honoured bumper cheque from Rotary Club of Dumbarton President Gordon Craig

The Rotary Club of Dumbarton’s recent meeting welcomed Ms Samantha Reilly, Community Fundraiser for one of the area’s favourite worthy causes. The visit was Samantha’s way of thanking everyone at Rotary who helped raise the fantastic sum of £3,000 for Children’s Hospices Across Scotland – part of the proceeds of the highly successful charity dinner staged earlier in the year.

get an update on how CHAS is continually expanding the boundaries of the care and support it provides to children with life-limiting illness, notably at the highly-praised Robin House resource at Balloch.

She gave an impressive exposition of the outstanding work which

All sorts of people help CHAS, and Robin House is very well known in West Dunbartonshire and beyond, but without that steady accretion of funds it would be extremely diffi cult to plan ahead and maintain momentum – and, crucially, to help children. Rotary’s contribution was a very welcome addition to the money raised this year from all sorts of donors, and gaining an insight into just how that cash will be put to good use brought home yet again what a vital role the local community has to play in CHAS’s ongoing success.

at the Shores

Christmas starts on Sunday, November 19, as far as Lomond Shores is concerned, with the switching on of the Christmas lights and a family fun day running from noon till 6pm featuring music, entertainment and activities for children – for example a carousel and fun fair rides.

It’s a charity night in aid of CALM, the Campaign Against Living Miserably – which sounds like a cause worth supporting. Based in England, it was launched back in 2006 as a campaign aimed at bringing down the suicide rate among men – an ambition which has strong resonance in Scotland in 2017. A recent Suicide Awareness Week disclosed some disturbing truths about the number of people, often men, who fall victim to the worst kind of depression – the sort nobody should be left to face alone. Alan Ryden, keyboard player and singer with The Executives and his wife Fiona are using the night to round off their Glasgow 10k run in aid of the charity – where they

were joined by their daughters Jessica, 13, and Katie, aged four. Tickets are £5 and an entertaining evening is promised (with music from The Executives) which will raise some money and a deserving cause will benefit. Tickets can be bought from Alistair who runs Discography Music in. unit 12 The Bell Centre in Dumbarton High Street.

This will be followed by a firework display and a night market offering a taste of what will be on offer at the Christmas market… and apparently Santa has promised to pay an early season visit too. He’ll be back to open his grotto on November 25, and meanwhile the Christmas market launches on November 20 – right after the switch-on weekend.

MAN WHO INSPIRED NHS There should probably be a statue in Cardross or Dumbarton of the writer A J Cronin, a brilliant literary star whose almost Dickens-style social commentary helped to drive health reform.

Together with political legend Aneurin Bevan he pioneered a public hospital which many have seen as the prototype for the great NHS project that was eventually to follow. As the poster for the Heritage Society’s session makes clear, he became one of the most important writers of the 20th century, working across a variety of media, from non-fi ction to drama.

Born in Cardross, he was educated at Dumbarton Academy, and seemed cut out to become a fi rst class sportsman or athlete, before starting a brilliant career in medicine. Now, in what promises to be a fascinating look at his life, Cronin – one of Scotland’s greatest writers - is the subject of December’s meeting of the Lennox Heritage Society. In his famous work the Citadel he inspired what was to amount to a revolution in health care, against opposition from establishment fi gures who were benefi ting from what Cronin powerfully revealed to be a corrupt and feeble public health system.

Despite his international fame, Cronin never forgot Dumbarton and to the end of his days remained a proud supporter of Dumbarton FC. As both a great literary fi gure, health campaigner, dramatist and essayist he easily qualifi es as one of the most admirable talents ever to come out of West Dunbartonshire – and his story deserves to be told in full. The Heritage Society lecture is on December 14 at 7.30pm in the Concord Community Centre, and will be given by historian Ian Baillie. Membership of the Society for the remainder of the season is just £6, or you can simply pay £2 on the night to attend a specifi c lecture.

Staged at Lomond Shores it saw traders and comic fans from all over Scotland buying and exchanging graphic novels, action fi gures and toys – overwhelmingly on sci-fi and fantasy themes. It’s the sort of event you expect to see taking place at a venue like the SECC, and its trip to Lomondside is a feather in the cap for Lomond Shores. Comics are a big niche market, and an event like Comic-Con draws people from across central Scotland and beyond – and meanwhile a venue very different

from the usual amorphous city centre hall is an added attraction Anyone with a niche hobby – whether its model railways or radio-controlled planes – will tell you that while you can go online for products it’s no substitute for a full scale exhibition. Loch Lomond Shores manager, Audrey Reid said, “This is the first event of this kind in the area, and we’ve been completely taken aback by the level of interest in it. “Loch Ness might have Nessie, but Loch Lomond has superheroes and Star Wars stormtroopers!

Finding food for ferrets West Dunbartonshire animal lovers are being asked to ferret out some treats for some furry little guests of the local SSPCA centre. The charity is used to dealing with all manner of pets, of course particularly dogs, cats and rabbits, but has recently found itself catering for a number of ferrets and other small animals – and a little help would be appreciated. All of the animals involved have either been rescued or born in the charity’s care, and hopefully they will all find good homes in the not too distant future – but in the meantime they could do with some extra supplies. Centre manager Joe McDade said: “We’ve had an influx of ferrets in our care over the last few

months which has meant a few more mouths to feed. “We’re running extremely low on ferret nuggets and also hay for the rabbits and small animals in our care. “If anyone wants to donate or meet some of the animals in our care, including Jock, Craig and Casper the ferrets, they can do so by dropping in anytime between 10am and 4pm (closed Tuesday). Donations can be sent via Amazon Wishlist: http://amzn. eu/7EDYeBQ or handed in to the Dunbartonshire centre on Dumbarton Road, Milton G82 2UA.

The lungs are made up of tiny pockets called "alveoli" where the work of taking oxygen from the air for use within the body takes place. Smoking does two things. It destroys the walls between these pockets resulting in less alveoli, leaving people less able to get oxygen into their bodies, and also causes narrowing and blockage of tubes in the lungs due to swelling and thick mucus. A poster designed by a P6 pupil has been selected to front this year’s Fireworks Safety Awareness Campaign.

Ten-year-old Kerr Gray’s important message will be displayed across West Dunbartonshire to raise awareness this Guy Fawkes night.

There are many talented young musicians in West Dunbartonshire, and more than a few of them will be starring in a special double bill at Dumbarton’s Riverside Parish Church on November 3 (from 7.30pm to 10pm).

Kerr Gray shows off his poster, selected for this year's Fireworks Safety Awareness campaign

Kerr, who is in P6 at Knoxland Primary School in Dumbarton, wins £200 for his school and will see his poster head up this year’s campaign. Kerr’s slogan of ‘Don’t sell fi reworks to anyone under 18 years of age’ reaffi rms the message of the Fireworks Safety Awareness Campaign, which reminds retailers and the public of the legal age limit to buy fi reworks. Residents are being reminded to avoid DIY fi reworks events and to instead attend one of the offi cial displays organised

by the council in Dumbarton or Clydebank. Kerr’s design will feature on hundreds of posters and leafl ets distributed across West Dunbartonshire in schools, Council offi ces, libraries and shops. Kerr said: “I wanted to make sure everyone knows they can’t buy fireworks if they’re under 18. "I made the rockets red and blue as these re the colour I think of when thinking of fireworks. “I also made the colour of the clothes the same colour that the emergency services use.”

If you happen to be passing through Balmaha some weekend consider making a small donation via the wishing well outside The Oaktree Inn – which has steadily been amassing funds for a charity that cares for children suffering from a brain tumour. In just one week the fund collected £445 in denominations ranging from one pence to £2, all dropped in the well. The effort was inspired by one particular child the folk at the Inn encountered, and who sadly lost his fight after a hard battle. His family set up the charity “Sam” – “send a message” – which provides children like their son with Christmas presents and surprises.

The Simple Procedure was introduced in November 2016 and replaces the previous Small Claims actions and Summary Cause actions for payment, recovery of moveable property and orders to make someone do something specific. It covers claims with a value of less than £5,000 and was specifically designed to allow the claimant to process an action themselves. It is meant to be a less formal, cheaper and faster process than the ones it replaces; with all forms available on line and court lodging fee of only £18 for claims under £200 and £100 for anything above

that. However, this does not mean that it is necessarily ‘simple’ and it can be difficult to navigate without legal assistance. Should you require to raise an action, to recover money owed to you for example, you will firstly have to consider jurisdiction and identify the court where the action should be raised. This is usually the court nearest to where the respondent, the person owing you the money, resides. The Respondent is given the opportunity to admit liability for the claim, admit it in part, make a time to pay application or defends the action. Like any court action, the case may ultimately only be resolved by an evidential hearing.

Burns Club toasts St Andrew St Andrew’s Night maybe isn’t the most exciting celebration in the Scottish calendar – too close to Christmas, too cold and dark – but keeping up the traditions are the members of Dumbarton Burns Club, who have decided to have their annual November 30 night in the Dumbuck Hotel for the second year in a row. The next big event planned after that is of course the 2018 Burns Supper, which will be in the Alexandria Masonic Temple on January 26. Every year at this time the club disburses funds to worthy causes, usually to the tune of around £1,500, and we’ll publish details of which charities benefited this year in a future issue.

Lomond Shores has a special St Andrews Celebration Market at Loch Lomond Shores from 10am to 4pm on the weekend of December 2 and 3, at The Gathering – with plenty of ideas for high quality festive fare to enjoy over the season. The regular farmers' markets are popular in peak season, especially summer, but while this one will be staged just after St Andrew’s Day it’s clearly going to have a resolutely Christmas theme – and should be a different kind of experience, even for people who visit on a regular basis. There’s also a lot of competition for shoppers’ attention at this time of year, so as well as enjoying the Christmas vibe there should also be some good deals to be had on goods you’d struggle to find in a supermarket.

It will cover different types of events, licences, risk assessment, first aid, food hygiene, publicity, money handling, planning your event and more.

It will also cover the details of Scottish Parent Teacher Council membership-linked insurance, the cost of which is covered by West Dunbartonshire Council – what’s covered and how it works. COMPANY... At The Kitchen Depot, we have always prided ourselves in our family values, on always being prepared to do whatever it takes to ensure that our customers are treated exactly as we would like to be treated ourselves - with courtesy, consideration and professionalism.

But lest we ever become complacent, we actively encourage ongoing feedback - here's what Mr Lee Sanderson has to say:

"The most incredible thing about The Kitchen Depot has been your sky-high levels of customer service. Too often a company will promote customer service as a core value, only to reveal a hollow promise when they don't live up to it." Mr Sanderson continues: "My favourite retailer is John Lewis because I know that they will do whatever they can to put something right if it goes wrong. The Kitchen Depot has performed to the same high standard."

"To favourably compare a small family business to Britain's most respected retailer is not something that I do lightly but you are well worthy of the comparison." Well, thanks for that, Mr Sanderson - please excuse us while we blush with pride. When it comes to looking after our customers, The Kitchen Depot is never knowingly undersold.

Scott Jackson began volunteering for Barnardo’s Scotland’s shop in Alexandria when he was 19. During a period of unemployment following a stint as a trainee hairdresser, he was keen to pursue a career in retail. His local Job Centre secured Scott a work placement at the children charity’s store and he enjoyed it so much he continued volunteering there for three years. Scott said: “I really wanted to work in retail but I just didn’t have the experience on my CV to feel confident in applying for jobs in that field. I was delighted when I had the opportunity to learn the ropes and gain the skills needed.” When a sales associate role became available at the

RUN IS FOR GOOD CAUSES and helping them to recall memories of watching or playing sport.

December 3 is the date set for the 7th Annual Festive Training Run from Dumbarton to Anniesland, and this year it’s in support of the charities Funding Neuro and (new this time) Sporting Memories Foundation (Scotland). As well as the 10km and Half Marathon distance there will also be 5k or 2k options – so many more should be able to join in. The half marathon route will be from Dumbarton to Anniesland Lock 27 at 1100 Crow Road, along the cycle path. The events are not timed as they will be classed as a training run, however, the route will be supported with course marshals and signage. To take part in the event, entrants are asked to make an ‘honesty’ donation of whatever you can afford to the fundraising link

www.virginmoneygiving.com/te am/2017festiverunfundingneuro sportingmemories which will be shared equally between Funding Neuro and Sporting Memories Foundation. Once donated let organiser Alan Kennedy know your preferred distance, emergency contact name and number. Alan will send you all the details of the run. Email surfaceplus@gmail.com

By sharing memories of sporting moments and tapping into a passion for sport, it helps people to connect with others and with their past, reawakening positive thoughts and feelings that otherwise remain hidden away (more details at www. sportingmemoriesnetwork.com/ landing). Funding Neuro’s aim is to accelerate the development of new treatments for many of the most serious neurological conditions.

It does not focus on one single neurological condition nor duplicate the work being carried The Sporting Memories Foundation out by other charities. supports older people across Instead it identifi es the issues that the UK living with dementia, hinder progress and fi nds solutions depression and loneliness by so that research and innovative engaging them in social activities therapies can be accelerated.
