Top talent adorns book festival UK columnist of the year in 2015. Melanie will talk about being asked by actor and comedian Gregor Fisher,TV’s Rab C. Nesbitt, to work with him on a memoir. Gregor had a troubled family background. Before he was four, he was on his third set of foster homes and then came through a number of care homes. When he became 60, he decided to ask for Melanie’s help in finding out about his real origins.
Muriel Gray, Alistair Moffat, Liz Lochhead, comic crime writer Christopher Brookmyre and Melanie Reid are among top writers confirmed for the Cove and Kilcreggan Book Festival. Part of Book Week Scotland, the event will be held in Cove Burgh Hall on November 26 and 27. Organisers say it is a Festival for everyone including young readers. The Gourock man became widely known for a number of public artworks which made telling political points, like the Straw Locomotive suspended over a giant crane illustrating the demise of that industry. The afternoon continues with Alistair Moffat, the journalist, broadcaster and historian who has written the wonderfully comprehensive Scotland; A History From Earlier Times. The finale is that multi faceted talent Muriel Gray – television presenter, TV production executive, horror fiction author, former rector of Edinburgh University and current chair of Glasgow School of Art.

Residents say the more evidence provided, the more chance of getting a crossing installed. They claim action needs to be taken before someone is seriously hurt or even killed as they say the corner is lethal as it is without adding parked cars into the mix. Residents say that selfish drivers have left cars and vans blocking

the view at the junction of Clachan Road with the busy B833 in the centre of the village instead of using the new car parking spaces behind the shop. Worried residents told Rosneath and Clynder Community Council about the problem, handing more than 20 photographs of dangerously parked vehicles
to members of Argyll and Bute Council. A council spokesperson has said there was little that the authority can do about the problem, but locals are not giving up and the Facebook group, ‘Parking like a clown at the Rosneath Co-op’ has been set up. Already the group has more than 100 members. It is understood that the council has already considered a pedestrian crossing at the site, and the Facebook group is saying there should also be barriers to prevent parking. A council spokesperson said recently that unless there were double yellow lines then the council had no powers over the problem. “At the moment it is currently not possible for our wardens to carry out enforcement of footway parking; with the exception that only where a vehicle is parked partially on the footway and there are restrictions in place on the carriageway. Where there are no such restrictions and only where it is actually causing an obstruction, does this become a police matter.”

Safety first on bonfire night JOB VACANCY
Carers Needed
More children rather than adults get hurt by fireworks. Over the past five years over 350 pre-school children were treated in hospital for fireworks injuries. The Fire Service advice is that only one person should be in charge of fireworks. If that’s you, then make sure you take all the necessary precautions. Read the instructions in daylight and don’t drink any alcohol until they’ve all been discharged. Make your preparations in advance, and in daylight. Perhaps the best advice of all is to go to an organised display, like the annual event on Helensburgh Pier ( writes Nick Cowie ). It is organised by the Round Table and stalls open on the 5th at 18:30, the bonfire is lit at 18:45 and fireworks start at 19:30.

It turns out that this is a handsomely produced volume of then and now photographs of Helensburgh and Rhu and is for sale at £14.99. It will certainly interest newer residents who perhaps know little about the history of our town ( writes Nick Cowie). Chris dates Helensburgh’s history exactly to 11 January 1776 when Sir James Colquhoun of Luss advertised land to be divided into building plots on the south-facing slope overlooking the Clyde. The town, named after Lady Helen Colquhoun, received a royal charter in 1802 and developed rapidly on a planned grid pattern during the nineteenth century. Henry Bell’s Comet, the first seagoing steam ship in the world, started a commuter service to Glasgow in 1812, making the town, with its fine views over the sea, an attractive place to live.
By Edwardian times, a large number of fine houses, some designed by important architects, had been built up the hill. Its development continues to the present. The Welsh-born author remarkably has only lived in Helensburgh since 2006 but since then has become much involved in the local community, including the Photographic Club, the Heritage Trust and the Friends of Hermitage Park. Since retiring in 2013, he has been able to enjoy his main interests of photography, local history and hill walking. In a recent interview he said: “Since coming to the town 10 years ago, I have been learning

about the history of the town and preparing this book was a real opportunity to find out in more detail the ways it has changed over the years.” “Helensburgh and Rhu through Time” is available through Amazon and other outlets.

Many of the older street trees which have graced the wide grass verges of the town for the last 70 years or more are now reaching the end of their life and need to be replaced. And it was with this in mind that Helensburgh Tree Conservation Trust was formed by town residents in 2002.

BB CENTURY: 100 years of history for the Helensburgh Boys Brigade
The Boys Brigade is celebrating 100 years of activities in the area with events including the opening of a time capsule from 1991 when the company celebrated 75 years. The capsule contained a letter from the Boys who sent the greeting across the years and reflected on their time in the Boys Brigade and the 75-year history in Helensburgh. The contents of the capsule were recorded by the current members and it was found to include photographs of the officers, the company, the company section and the junior section. The Boys' Brigade is the world's
oldest uniformed youth organisation. The first company in Helensburgh was founded in 1888. The present company, which is attached to the Parish Church, is the one that goes back a century. The Company is divided into three sections. The Anchor Boys who enjoy a programme of fun and games. The Juniors have a wide range of activities and a structured badge system. The
The Company takes part in adventure camps, five a side football, ten pin bowling, badminton, table tennis and cross country running. The Boys Brigade is also an enthusiastic charity fund raiser. Events like the BB’s sponsored cycle, the five a side football tournament, the Remembrance Day Parade and many others also take place. Past and present members of Helensburgh's Boys' Brigade launched the group's centenary celebrations at a special fete held in Helensburgh Parish Church Halls. It saw past captains turn out to celebrate the centenary year and reflect on their time in the Boys Brigade. The centenary cake which featured the 100 years logo was designed by two of the boys, Lewis McKechnie and Craig Gray. helensburghcos.org/boys-brigade

This month: SHOOTING FROM THE HIP? Many people experiencing hip pain look for help and advice. It can be caused by osteoarthritis (wear and tear in the ball and socket joint itself), worn discs in the lower spine, or a condition called trochanteric bursitis. People often suffer with trochanteric bursitis without realising it can be treated with a steroid injection. The symptoms include very localised pain and tenderness over the side of the hip, which can usually be pin-pointed. It is often made worse by lying on the same side, getting in and out of the car or walking down stairs. Hip osteoarthritis however
can cause pain throughout the hip which can spread into the groin or knee. It is associated with being overweight or high impact exercise such as professional football. Managing the pain with medication is often necessary, weight loss can help and maintaining physical activity is also important. If the pain is affecting sleep or limiting activities then your doctor could alter your medication to control the pain better. Beyond that you may need to see an orthopaedic surgeon to discuss possible hip replacement. So if you have pain shooting from the hip – don’t suffer in silence - speak to your doctor!

SUPPORT Work to begin on Morar House GROUPS Local News - NOVEMBER 2016
Morar House, the noted Arts and Crafts house opposite The Hill House in upper Helensburgh is about to undergo a transformation. Work is due to begin this month. Once known as Drumadoon, it was built for the McAlpine family who were proprietors of a shipping firm in Glasgow. Like Hill House, it was carefully placed on the site to take full advantage of the view over the Clyde Estuary. It is an extremely important building in the career of William Leiper whose houses in Helensburgh in the later 19th and
early 20th century have left an unique stamp on the character of the town. It combines a skilfully handled composition with a mixture of Scottish and English elements with strong references to the work by Richard Norman Shaw. However unlike its famous neighbour which attracts visitors from all over the world,
Morar House was left to rot and was dubbed Hell House by neighbours. Despite that, when plans emerged to redevelop the property, there were local objections on the grounds of invasion of privacy. Eventually after revisions to the planning application, developers All Saints Living are ready to go on site to create six spacious apartments in the original house and to develop a new build extension within the 1.59acres of land, also housing six apartments. Land within the grounds also has planning permission for three large detached, contemporary properties. Sonali Craddock, the company's marketing director, said: “The house is unique and impressive. It is a listed William Leiper designed mansion, which is magnificently placed in 1.59 acres of grounds, with extraordinary views over the Clyde Estuary. “Although it has been vacant for a number of years, there are still numerous original features present. A sales launch is expected in January 2017.”

NOVEMBER 2016 - Christmas Feature
Beat The Xmas Rush By Nick Cowie
Once Bonfire night is over Christmas comes up on us like an express train - so plan ahead and don't leave everything to the last minute.
Shop Local
Buying locally, ac cord to research carried ing out by Chambers of Com m across Britain, he erce lps everyone. Several studies ha ve that when you bu shown y from an independent, locally owned business, rather than a nationally owned business, signific antly more of your money is used to make purchases from other local businesses, service providers and fa rms. In fact some rese arch suggests that ev ery single pound you spen d gets recycled so well by local communities that it ends up being worth £3 to the wider community .
H A N D C R A F T E D

Christmas Feature - NOVEMBER 2016
Caring for you and your family
Xmas Spirit
Party Time
There are many important details that go into a great holiday season. The important thing is to plan. Shop early, prepare food for the freezer so that there’s time to make decorating your home a fun family occasion. Make time to enjoy the carols, church services, pantos and drink cocoa around the fireplace. Gathering around the Christmas tree for celebrations and gift exchanges is hard to beat . Even people who don’t believe in Christmas celebrate the holiday season with holiday fun and winter festivals.
Some people dread Christmas Parties, especially if they are landed with the job of organising one . But as we can reveal here there's no need to worry. Pick one of the fine services from among our advertisers, follow a few simple rules and a good time is guaranteed for all. But remember those office photos could haunt you for the next 12 months! You have to see these people again so smile, be a fun guest - and don't take anything too far.

Legal Matters with Gill Bowman BA LLB This month:
The Importance of Legal Tyres
We are coming into the time of year when we should be increasingly aware of the importance of tyre safety. However, we are not all necessarily aware of the specific legal requirements placed on us. All cars and lightweight commercial vehicles are required to have a minimum tread depth of 1.6mm across the central three quarters of the tyre. This needs to be in a complete and continuous band around the entire circumference area. Each tyre must also be free from cuts of 25mm or more, or 10% of the width, whichever is the greater. Any cut which is deep
enough to result in exposure of the cords, no matter the length, will also render the tyre illegal. It should be noted that, under statute, both the driver and the registered owner of the car, if different, are responsible for ensuring the tyres are of a legal standard. Failing to do so could result in a fine of up to £2,500 and three penalty points, which is applicable for each individual tyre and could therefore have serious consequences in the event your car has more than one illegal tyre. This is easily avoided if you regularly check and maintain your vehicle.

Gordon who returned from the Rio Paralympics with a gold and silver medal has taken over as the world’s number one wheelchair tennis player having also won the Australian Open and Wimbledon titles this year. In a report prepared for the council, Douglas Hendry, the council's executive director of customer services said: “The achievements of Gordon Reid are significant and have helped to add to a sense of civic pride not only in his home community of Helensburgh but across Argyll and Bute.”
Members of Argyll and Bute Council Helensburgh and Lomond area committee agreed to recommend that Gordon should become only the second individual to be granted the freedom of the area. The move was ratified at a full council meeting in Lochgilphead. The other holder is Helensburgh resident and former Argyll and Bute provost Billy Petrie.

In a recent interview with BBC Sport he said: “ I wanted to achieve two things. First if there were any kids with disabilities for this to inspire them to take up the sport. "Second was to continue to break down the barriers when it comes to disability sport, to showcase the talent in the sport.”
The council will arrange a special
Argyll and Bute Council’s Provost Len Scoullar, said: “Gordon would be an immensely deserving recipient of this award. Everyone in Argyll and Bute is rightly proud of his achievements and we are extremely pleased that we are in a position to be able to recognise his wonderful success in this way.”

HELPERS needed
National Befriending Week starts 1st Nov it’s a chance to highlight a local volunteer befriending service for the elderly The Visiting Friends, matching befrienders with elderly people to ensure they stay connected to their community. Volunteers normally spend a couple of hours a week with their friend for a cuppa a blether or a walk, lunch or a run in the car. Co-ordinator Jayne Burnett says: “Two fifths of older people say their main source of company is the television. People who are chronically isolated are 64% more likely to develop dementia. “If you’re over 18, can spare a couple of hours a week please pop in to the TSI Office, 14 Colquhoun Square, or call 01436 671613

GOOD
COMPANY... At The Kitchen Depot, we have always prided ourselves in our family values, on always being prepared to do whatever it takes to ensure that our customers are treated exactly as we would like to be treated ourselves - with courtesy, consideration and professionalism.
But lest we ever become complacent, we actively encourage ongoing feedback - here's what Mr Lee Sanderson has to say:
"The most incredible thing about The Kitchen Depot has been your sky-high levels of customer service. Too often a company will promote customer service as a core value, only to reveal a hollow promise when they don't live up to it." Mr Sanderson continues: "My favourite retailer is John Lewis because I know that they will do whatever they can to put something right if it goes wrong. The Kitchen Depot has performed to the same high standard."
"To favourably compare a small family business to Britain's most respected retailer is not something that I do lightly but you are well worthy of the comparison." Well, thanks for that, Mr Sanderson - please excuse us while we blush with pride. When it comes to looking after our customers, The Kitchen Depot is never knowingly undersold.
