Thousands head for light show
As we exclusively revealed in December, St Peter’s Cardross will be transformed by light and sound by the charity NVA for the official launch of Scotland’s Festival of Architecture 2016 in March. Organisers expect up to 8,000 visitors to arrive in Helensburgh to be taken by bus to the event over the course of the nine-day Hinterland event. Hinterland will see the ruins of St Peter’s Seminary transformed by light and sound. Fifty years on since the building opened, visitors will Mobile Hairstylist
be guided on an exploration of what organisers regard as an architectural masterpiece re-animated at night for the first time. As dusk falls to darkness, a walked route will weave through atmospheric woodland towards the abandoned building complex. Hinterland will reveal the full glory of the towering concrete ruin, combining moving light installations and projection with a haunting choral soundscape by composer Rory Boyle, recorded by the St Salvator’s Chapel Choir of the University of St Andrews.

Each tree costs ÂŁ70 to buy and plant. At time of writing enough money had been donated for six replacements. A web site is being set up which will detail ways people can help or donate.

The Scottish Government said the crackdown on “ wild camping” was needed due to littering and vandalism including fire-damage, the destruction of trees, as well as abandoned camping equipment blighting the area. New byelaws will introduce four camping management zones in the park – West and North Loch Lomond, Trossachs West and North – with the legislation including the launch of a camping
permit system. Antisocial campers could also be reported to the procurator-fiscal, with the seasonal byelaws due to come into effect next year. They will be active from 1 March to 30 September. There will be 300 low-cost camping places introduced and a permit system in other areas to allow “informal” lochshore camping at “sustainable levels”. However, outdoor campaigners
Jess Dolan, director of Ramblers Scotland, said: “This is a sad day for everyone who holds Scottish access rights dear. The national park itself has admitted that most of the antisocial problems arising from some camping activities are caused by a lack of infrastructure and enforcement of existing legislation.” However, Linda McKay, convener of the Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park Authority, said: “This is tremendously positive news for all those who, like us, want to protect and enhance some of Scotland’s most precious natural places.” Supporting the new restrictions, environment minister Aileen McLeod said: “Abandoned campsites, discarded litter, destruction of plants and trees and the cumulative environmental damage caused by irresponsible campfires is not something that we can allow to happen.”

CHAS trek in memory of Frank we then canoe to Tarbet (7 miles) to finally disembark and return to our bikes to cycle the remaining 19 miles back to CHAS. This is done in one day.
TREK TEAM: The team will be fundraising in Memory of Frank Leitch
Every year since 2006 members of the Police Scotland mountain rescue team have undertaken their own fundraising venture for CHAS in the memory of Frank Leitch. An ex-police officer and mountain rescue team member, Frank, who was from Helensburgh and who served in Alexandria, passed away in 2006 at the Beatson unit less than two years after retiring from the police. His colleague Dave Watson says: “In his memory, members of the mountain rescue team devised a fundraising venture we call The
Loch Lomond Challenge. “This is a circumnavigation of the loch by cycling, running and canoeing. We start at CHAS (Children’s Hospice Association Scotland) , Balloch and cycle to Rowardennan (17 miles), where after a short break we run along the West Highland Way to Ardleish (13 miles), get taken across the loch to Ardlui where

Double deal for Golf clubs In what’s believed to be a Scottish first, Helensburgh Golf Club has teamed up with Buchanan Castle Golf Club to offer a unique double deal. Members at Helensburgh can now enjoy free golf at Buchanan Castle - and vice versa. Members will play their normal competitions at their home course but they can play the other course at no extra cost. The respective captains, Ian Irving and Gordon Yule say the tie up offers two very different golfing experiences. Helensburgh Golf Club is one of the best moorland courses anywhere in Scotland and Buchanan Castle Golf Club has a reputation as one of the best parkland courses. Members of both clubs can enjoy playing either course without restriction. Martyn Lawrie, the Helensburgh Club Secretary, said: “ The main benefit to members will be the ability to play two different types of courses while still paying their normal Helensburgh subscription with no hidden costs.
CLUB CAPTAINS: Gordon Yule and Ian Irving welcome the deal providing members with new opportunities
“This offer also extends to nonplaying members who may wish to drop into either clubhouse looking for quality catering or bar facilities, should they be in the area.
Double Value!
“The reciprocal agreement is certainly the first of its kind in the West of Scotland; if not the whole of Scotland.” Helensburgh’s Captain, Ian Irving says “As captain, I’m excited about the added benefits that this arrangement offers to our members, and demonstrates the forward thinking of both clubs. I hope that others will be encouraged to join our club. They will be made most welcome."

Grants for What's Up Doc? Groups on offer with Dr Nick Dunn This month: ASTHMA ATTACKS
Groups and organisations in Cardross can apply for small grants to buy new equipment. They come via The Cardross Tenants and Residents Association. The TRA tell us that the small grants are available for groups to help fund the purchase of goods but not for running costs. Recently the Cardross TRA helped to purchase new nets for the Cardross Tennis Club and special weights for the nets costing just over £200. The Cardross Scouts got a new fire door funded by the TRA. Cardross Primary 7s recently entered a competition to create a logo for the TRA. The entries were hard to judge because they were all very good. The winners were in a group comprising Dylan Caldow, Irwin Conaghan, William
Mc Luskey and Lucus Dobbin. They were presented with a £10 i-tunes Voucher each at their assembly by Cameron Grant and Bobby Beggs the Chairman and Secretary of the Residents Association. Anyone interested in applying for a grant should contact Cameron Grant cameron_grant@sky.com or Bobby Beggs bbsom@live.co.uk
“Asthma attack” now describes a “flare-up” or “exacerbation” of asthma. This is designed to promote early action. I initially worried about using this term, in case it would alarm patients. Most people traditionally imagine an “asthma attack” to be very severe, requiring hospital. However I now see the sense in using the term more widely, as it may encourage people to seek help earlier and prevent them requiring emergency hospital care. Using the new definition, many asthma attacks will be managed by GPs or nurses, who can prescribe steroid tablets and review asthma treatment.
It affects the “tubes” in the lungs, causing temporary narrowing leading to cough, wheeze or breathlessness. Good control of asthma reduces long-term damage and risk of attacks, mainly through daily use of preventer (usually brown) inhalers, keeping people well.
There are 390,000 people in Scotland affected by asthma.
Check out asthma.org.uk for more info.
Seeking help early is key. This may be as simple as contacting the surgery for a same day appointment. The earlier an asthma attack is recognised, the simpler the solution. Ideally you should not need to use your blue reliever more than twice a week, so if you are, find out from your Practice Nurse or GP how to get better control!

to break the bank of venue, as the area offers a naturally stunning setting with incredible places to wed. However, unlike buying a house it isn’t all location, location, location. Couples want impeccable service and attention to detail too. Because we are in an area famous for wedding venues, there are very experienced caterers and ancillary wedding services on hand. Crisp white table cloths, polished cutlery, beautifully decorated tables and, of course, extra sparkling glasses for that all-important
toast have been practised and perfected many times over. Couples can relax when getting ready at home and are likely to have tried and trusted hair and beauty specialists close at hand to ensure they look their very best. Not only that, mum and all the bridesmaids are often likely to be close by too. If a winter wedding is planned, the opportunity for outdoor pictures is likely to be limited, so this may swing the decision towards a venue with a deluxe interior, including dramatic features such as a sweeping staircase, feature wall or elegant fireplace. These will provide a lovely backdrop for pictures. In spring or summer, look for colourful gardens, waterfront view, an attractive gazebo and let the natural beauty of the great outdoors enhance your photograph. Whatever your budget our advertisers represent the best of local services and can help you to a special day without breaking the bank.

Legal Matters with Gill Bowman BA LLB
This month: REMINDER TO DOG OWNERS Under the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 it is already a legal requirement for dogs defined as dangerous to be microchipped. However, new legislation being introduced requires that all dogs in Scotland, England and Wales will have to be microchipped as of 6th April 2016. Your dog’s details will be registered on a database and it will be the owner’s responsibility to ensure that the details are up to date and accurate. This includes advising if your pet has passed away or been sold to a new keeper. Going forward, all new puppies will be chipped at
the time of their second vaccinations. The idea behind this is to encourage responsible ownership, deter theft and improve control over breading. Local authorities will have handheld scanners which can read the microchips instantly. This will mean all dogs should be traceable and able to be reunited with owners quickly. In the event you do not microchip your dog, then a notice may be served on you requiring you to do so within 21 days. If you choose to ignore the notice then you will be fined up to £500 or an enforcer may seize the dog and microchip it at your expense.

Bach treat for Choir fans events were vividly portrayed in sublime music.”
There’s a musical treat in store for fans of Helensburgh Oratorio Choir. This month they are performing Bach’s St Matthew Passion. When it was first staged in 1727 it had a huge impact on the audience. Choir Chairman Alicia Tindal tells us: “For Bach, this was no mere story but a central part of his strong Christian belief. The setting of the passion story found in Matthew’s Gospel inspired him to compose arguably his most important religious work. “With two orchestras, a double
choir, a gallery choir and soloists the congregation in the church on Good Friday, 1727 must have been astonished as the passion
While no such astonishment exists today, Bach’s setting of the St Matthew Passion is a wellloved highlight of the choral repertoire. The Helensburgh Oratorio Choir, with professional instrumentalists and soloists, and pupils from local primary schools as the gallery choir, will be performing this marvellous work, albeit in a slightly abridged form, on Sunday March 20th at 7:30 pm in Helensburgh Parish Church. Tickets £14, students/ children £7, are available from choir members, the church office or the Scandinavian Shop. www.hoc.uk.net.
SPONSERED BUNGEE jump FOR SSPCA 16 year-old Hermitage Academy pupil Louise Davis hopes to raise £150 for the SSPCA with bungee jump. The bungee jump is off the Titan Crane in Clydebank on Saturday 7th May. Louise has in the past also done fundraising events for Milton Animal Home by collecting donations of food, blankets and toys.

Business sparks: JAYNE MIDDLETON Empathy can change lives Helensburgh woman, Jayne Middleton, is launching an approach to personal growth called empathic coaching, and it begins with a phone call. She is the only practitioner in Scotland and describes the technique as one which: “Brings about change by transforming old patterns, enabling you to re-discover life with clarity, more energy and a sense of purpose.” Jayne says:” In an initial one hour phone conversation I will hear what it is you want by asking some key questions which will gently guide you to a deeper understanding of yourself. Together we will reveal the parts of you that are holding you back from living in a way you would like and by giving empathy to those parts a new energy is launched. She adds that the technique is not a magic wand because change takes time. There is significant
change in one hour and suggests four to eight sessions for longer term change. Empathic coaching can help to heal the oldest most stuck patterns. Jayne studied empathic coaching with Francois Beausoleil (francois beausoleil.com) who co-created the process. She says as a result, the last time she had as much energy was when she was a child. “I am more balanced and generally satisfied with the choices I make.” “Empathic coaching is for everyone,” she says: “ It has the benefit of relaxing the nervous system and living with more clarity. The more relaxed we are the more effective we are. It's the opposite to what most
people believe.” Jayne says that she is particularly interested in working with health and social care professionals, people experiencing executive stress, artists who want to get their best work into the world and anyone who is doing work in the field of social change. She adds; “This work has a ripple effect. If I'm well then I want to contribute to the well-being of others. (Thriving individuals=thriving community's) “People say they discover deep satisfaction through the process, often describing a sense of magic, coming home, absolute focus, sense of purpose, wakening up and connection to meaning among other benefits. “ jaynemiddletoncoaching.com

cash for shop makeovers
Councillors have urged traders to take up the offer to improve the shopping experience in the town and attract in more customers.
so far more than ÂŁ75,000 has been earmarked to upgrade the frontage of 20 businesses in Helensburgh town centre.
Through Argyll and Bute Council’s agreement with Drum Development, the developers of the Waitrose site, £140,000 was made available for shopfront enhancements.
The second phase will open from March 1 to June 30 with applications to be determined in the autumn.
to apply: ‘’The initiative has worked really well so far, with 12 businesses in the town centre completing work to their shopfronts, and looking much the better for it, and another four jobs on site, with the remaining four due to start soon ‘’The money is there to give businesses a little extra help towards improving the character and appearance of their buildings and, ultimately, drawing more customers through the door. It is amazing the difference some professional work can make. ‘’We are here to administer the grants; ultimately it is for business owners themselves to get quotes and to commission the work and we will provide the funds once all the necessary paperwork is completed and statutory permissions granted. “Of course our regeneration team will be on hand to provide advice and will be making every effort to streamline the grant process and make it as user-friendly as possible.’’
The council’s policy lead for infrastructure, Ellen Morton, is calling on local businesses

A local charity is looking for volunteer befrienders - someone who spends a couple of hours enjoying the company of someone who is being cared for. Helensburgh and Lomond Carers say that volunteering is a very positive experience for those involved, and befriending is no exception. Chatting to someone who is being looked after by a family member, a friend or a neighbour means that whilst the befriender is there, the carer can enjoy a well-deserved spell of ‘me time’, possibly meeting a friend for lunch, catching up on previously enjoyed pastimes or simply

staying in and enjoying the company. Befriending can include an expenses paid outing to a local café for lunch or a drive in the country thanks to funding from charity supporters J & JR Wilson who have recently awarded £1000 towards these costs. Carers Manager Eileen McCrory says: “ Examples of feedback from our befrienders are: ‘I have found befriending to be a wonderful and tremendously rewarding
experience and an opportunity to meet wonderful people who you might not otherwise encounter.’ And: ‘It is very rewarding for the befriender when you visit someone and have a laugh with them. This is especially true if the befriendee has difficulty in leaving the house. It is always very satisfying when the primary carer has the confidence to leave you with their loved one and have a break and some personal time. Also: ‘ My current befriendee introduces me as a friend which is always nice to hear. The befriender may well get more out of the relationship than the befriended person.’ Eileen adds: “ All three parties, the carer, the person being cared for and the befriender, benefit from the difference effective befriending makes.
