CANCER RESEARCH SHOP AIMS TO BE UK NO 1 Helensburgh’s Cancer Research UK Shop holds its Stand Up To Cancer Family Festival on Sunday 18th August 12 to 4pm at Hermitage Academy, and once again bids to be top shop in the UK. Alison Sturgeon Assistant Manager tells the CA: “There are 600 shops in the UK and our tiny Helensburgh shop team is the only one that organises an event like this. We have zero budget so we rely very much on support from local businesses and our whole community.

area has achieved. Our shop has raised £47,500 in the 6 years since SU2C began. None of this would be possible if it wasn’t for the incredible generosity and community spirit that Helensburgh, and the surrounding areas show us every year. Together we Stand Up To Cancer.”

“Every penny we raise for Stand Up To Cancer, pays for Translational Research, which turns clinical trials into treatments for cancer patients. One of these trials is being conducted at the Beatson Institute in Glasgow.

The Helensburgh shop was “top shop“ in the UK for the last two years running, for the amount it raised for SU2C so it is keen to make it a hat trick. Two events organised for this year’s SU2C Campaign, are the Family Festival, and a Grease/Dirty Dancing Tribute on Sat 14th September at the Commodore Hotel.

“I have had the pleasure of meeting the scientists in person and have had a tour round the lab. It was an honour to tell them about all the fundraising that Helensburgh, and the surrounding

Douglas Taylor, Ridings Sawmills, NAR Plumbing, Hart Insurance and Tunnock’s. Alison adds: “We would also like to thank Kerr and his staff at the Wee Kelpie for offering to be our bbq chefs for the day, they will be cooking all the burgers that are generously donated by Callaghan’s butcher. Graeme Provan at Admin Design and Print donated all our beautiful posters and fliers.”

Entry Fee:

The Family Festival Entry Fee includes live music on stage from local rock cover band “Hot Ratz” and Musical Performances,

Helensburgh Art Club will be holding it's 68th Annual Exhibition and Sale at the Victoria Halls in Sinclair Street this month - one of the highlights of the summer season. It runs from Saturday 10th to Saturday 17th August. Margaret Cameron from the Club says: “We hope that local people and visitors to the town will come along to see the wealth of local talent on display. There will be a variety of pictures in various mediums as well as pottery, jewellery and craftwork. “This year for the first time we shall also be exhibiting sculpture. Entrance is free in order to make the Exhibition and Sale available to everyone.” The Art Club membership is open to both professional and amateur artists and has regular activities in the winter months (October – March) at Helensburgh Sailing Club when members can attend lectures,

PLASTIC FREE CAMPAIGN OPENS

A bid to make Helensburgh a plastic free town has been launched by a group of volunteers who have come up with some creative ideas to cut down on plastic waste. A steering group has been set up and a date set for the first meeting: Saturday 17th August at 4pm at Helensburgh Parish Church.

demonstrations and workshops. In addition there is the opportunity to join several groups – a Painting Group on Wednesday afternoons at the Sailing Club, a Portrait Group on Tuesday afternoons at Helensburgh Tennis Club and a Life Drawing Group on Friday mornings at the Sailing Club. The Art Club is always keen to welcome new members and especially younger members who have perhaps enjoyed art at school and are now able to find time to get involved.

The group did a litter pick after the Saturday market last month and they hope they will inspire shopkeepers, visitors and stall holders to think about litter and single-use plastic in the process. Organisers have created a Facebook group called Plastic Free Helensburgh. This is for anyone who wishes to join in with the group or even just keep up-to-date with what's going on.

FESTIVAL FUN IN THE SQUARE The town centre will once again be in festival mode this month for Summer Festival 2019 with more than 40 food outlets as well as all the popular rides. The Festival sponsored by Jordan Clark of Stall Hire Scotland, Helensburgh's monthly market operator, will be held in Colquhoun Square on August 11th. While the market will occupy the upper part of Colquhoun Square a few traders, in particular the street-food sellers, will be in the bottom half along with a wide range of entertainment including the popular Victorian Chair o'plane ride, a striker kiddies strength test, bouncy castles, roundabout, hamster

balls, bungees, and walking pet balloons. Peninsula Trikes will be offering motorbike trike rides around the town and at the market itself more than 70 traders will be displaying their wares from crafts to fresh artisan foods and street food stalls. Jordan said: “I am really looking forward to the weekend. I believe very much in Helensburgh as an attractive, vibrant town and am very pleased to be able to add to this through Summer Festival.” The food area includes Hairy

Date not to be missed for growers

Helensburgh hosts its annual horticultural show this month which for those who aspire to achieve a nice looking patch is a date not to be missed. The Helensburgh and Gareloch Horticultural Society Show originally was competed for by the region's professional gardeners who tended the grounds of the large Victorian mansions. These days the competitors are mainly amateurs – but this does not mean any dilution of standards. Those taking part have spent time, energy and expertise to bring their exhibits to the peak of perfection in time for the show.

Handyman all jobs, inside and outside

The Horticultural Society's Annual Flower and Vegetable Show will be held in the Victoria Halls on Saturday August 24th opening to the public at 2pm. The Society was founded in 1850,

records the Helensburgh Heritage web site, adding: “It is one of the town's oldest organisations. The show was started for the benefit of the many professional gardeners in the town at that time now anyone may compete.” There are well over 100 classes for flowers, shrubs, pot plants and decorative displays and for vegetables and fruit. As in all traditional flower shows there will be sections for flower arranging, pot plants and board displays of flowers and vegetables. There will be sections for young people and children, plus Baking, Preserves, Honey, Photography and Handicrafts.

Morag Young from the Society says: “The Society promotes Horticultural interests in the area and encourages young children too with its bulb competition for local Primary schools. “During the winter the society holds monthly meetings with guest speakers talking on a wide variety of Horticultural topics. “There is something at the show for everyone so come along and see what can be achieved in your garden.” If you want to join you can download an application form from their website www. helensburghhorti.com or join on the day.

PARK LANDSCAPE WORK NEARS FINISH Landscaping work at Hermitage Park is now well underway. It was held up because the Passivhaus pavilion was handed over to the Council eight months later than planned.

and switching on the lamps and connecting the CCTV. Other work includes building the new car park and bike stores, remaining park furniture, fencing and signage, remaining snagging works from phase one of their works. There will be tree planting on the upper plaza and main gate entrance avenue with a sustainable urban drainage system and dipping pond works. The greenhouse base will be built with short side walls in the kitchen garden and Cranberry the seesaw horse will be positioned at the plaza.

The project team say the delay was outwith their control and the late delivery of the pavilion delayed many other activities and events including the return of the landscape contractors Hawthorn Heights to finish the landscape works. However Hawthorn Heights have returned to site and are now scheduled to finish completing a 12

week programme of works around the end of this month. The work includes landscaping around the pavilion including upper plaza, steps (east side) and decking to the north side of the pavilion. Also pavilion sewage connection on to Sinclair Street, main gate entrance landscaping including tree planting and connecting the electrical circuit all round the park

ADVERTORIAL

Has Your Double Glazing Steamed Up?

At time of writing the lease opportunity for the café inside the pavilion is still open but the project team hopes that will progress over the next few weeks so it is ready to open in the autumn. They say: “We hope that all the building work will be finished by the end of August and the pavilion opening and park launch party will take place in September / October. Having had to postpone it twice due to the delays with the pavilion we will see how things are going before announcing the date.”

Hall director Alison Morrison told the Lochside News website that great efforts had been made to keep the building operational.

The directors say that every effort will be made to accommodate groups – for example, those who would normally use the small hall will be offered the main hall at no extra cost.

She said: “This represents the biggest undertaking in the hall’s life in community ownership. The level and composition of grant funding is an impressive achievement, for a small, charitable organisation, run entirely by volunteers. “That said, a team of professionals is supporting the project, with all works in compliance with Historic Environment standards specifications as would be expected for a heritage building. “While the focus is on the building, the raison d’être is

When building starts on the long-awaited new Leisure Centre there will be no shortage of public car parking in Helensburgh town centre according to council officials. Spaces for both cars and coaches on the pier car park will be lost during the construction period but a report by Argyll and Bute Council officials states that the new car park on Grant Street, combined with spaces a mile away on Station Road in Craigendoran, would mean that only 60 spaces were lost overall. Coaches could park on East Princes Street, the report adds, while the 53 spaces on the council’s civic centre car park, plus a ‘staff/visitor overspill’ car park on Grant Street, could be available at weekends – these are not available on weekdays. Their report to Helensburgh and Lomond area committee states that car parks are currently not at capacity. It adds: “The proposed

ARROCHAR ‘CAN’T AVOID’ MARINE LITTER Litter at the head of Loch Long has been a serious problem for some time. Now a study has revealed the reasons why so much waste, much of it plastic, lands on the shore at Arrochar. Environmental engineer Dr Tom Scanlon produced a film which reveals that over a time span of eight days plastic litter is carried by tides and a predominantly southwesterly wind towards hot spots around Arrochar, Helensburgh and Lochgoilhead.

accumulated on the foreshore, and it was traditionally used as fertiliser in coastal villages.

It is described as a unique ‘sink.’ Dr Scanlon’s CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) film follows a study published last year by Bill Turrell of Marine Scotland Science analysing the causes of the ‘Arrochar Litter Sink.’

Dr Turrell’s report states: “The presence of this plastic waste in our seas means that the ‘ware’ on Arrochar foreshore is now completely mixed with pieces of plastic, from large items like buckets and shoes to almost invisibly small pieces, broken down from larger items such as plastic bags and bottles.

He states that large volumes of dead seaweed, sometimes called ‘wrack’ or ‘ware’ have always

Now 400m tonnes of plastics are produced globally every year, with up to 5% of this entering the sea though poor waste management.

“This mix cannot be used as fertiliser any longer as there is no known way of separating out the seaweed from the litter.” He says about 62,000 items of litter wash onto the foreshore every year, coming about equally from the Clyde and the Irish Sea. It is estimated that Arrochar receives about 11% of all the marine litter entering the Clyde, whether from the Irish Sea or the river. Solutions such as putting a boom across the water to catch the waste have been suggested, but so far no solution has been found beyond painstaking beach cleaning.

GRANT FOR INFO BOOST

An information hub, online advertising campaign and planting are all planned in a bid to improve Cove and Kilcreggan for visitors. The villages’ community council has been awarded a £1,150 grant from Argyll and Bute Council’s supporting communities fund for the project. There will be a map featuring local businesses, leaflets and a new notice board in the hub in the bus shelter in the centre of Kilcreggan. The planting will be done in Kilcreggan village and other sites in partnership with the local Scouts and Scottish Women’s Institute, using local suppliers for planters and flowers. The area’s online presence will be boosted via a Google Adwords campaign.

TRANSFORM YOUR KITCHEN THIS SUMMER by just swapping the doors and worktops

This month: ANAPHYLAXIS Food allergy is thought to be on the increase, and we are not sure why. Very rarely, as was in the news a few months ago, people die of the most serious form of allergy – anaphylaxis. However, there are some common misunderstandings about what food allergy actually means. It is not food intolerance, which is when certain foods can result in unpleasant symptoms such as nausea, diarrhoea or stomach pains. Also, some forms of allergy never result in anaphylaxis, but may cause a rash. Whilst anaphylaxis is potentially life-threatening, the risk of death from it is close to 1 in a

million. People who are at risk are generally identified early, and the symptoms include rash, wheezing, swelling around the face and mouth and sometimes collapse. They should always carry an “Epipen” which contains adrenaline and are encouraged to use this early if there is even a small suspicion of anaphylaxis, and get straight to hospital. If there is a delay with the ambulance, a further injection can be given after 5 minutes, to prevent worsening again. With increased awareness by everyone of this problem, including nurses and doctors, it is hoped serious reactions are spotted and treated early!

Support FREE HELP OFFER TO CUT ENERGY BILLS Groups Change Works in Argyll is offering householders the opportunity to have a free home energy audit, which could lead to savings on heating and electricity bills. The project is offering free Energy Performance Certificates (EPC), worth up to £150. EPCs rate the energy efficiency of the property and what the energy-efficiency rating could be if improvements are made to a home. They highlight cost-effective ways to achieve a better rating including installing insulation, changing to a renewables based heating system or switching to more energy-efficient light bulbs. Donna Marshall, Change Works in Argyll Project Manager, said: “An energy performance certificate is a great indicator of where energy improvements can be made within your home to reduce heating and electricity bills. Investing in the energy efficiency of your property results in less carbon emissions and can greatly improve the comfort and warmth of your home.

We understandably moan about our seemingly never-ending winter, but the “off season” – dark nights, frequent rain – is the perfect time to discover new interests, probably mainly indoors, that can deliver major benefits in terms of self-fulfilment and even career advancement. There are so many classes and courses available within an easy journey of home that we really are spoiled for choice when it comes to finding something worthwhile to add to our stock of knowledge and experience, even before you consider

diversions which are mainly about entertainment. Most of us have at one time or another briefly considered learning a language (at least proficiently enough for simple conversation) or playing a musical instrument, but somehow it often seems difficult – in a busy life full of existing commitments – to make it happen. On the cusp of those long dark nights it’s a great time to consider how best to spend those shouldbe valuable hours that might otherwise be taken up with dull nights in with the TV.

Not everybody fancies the idea of a fitness or dance class, but it’s a great way to stay alert during the long drawn-out winter, or you could consider the potential benefits of a yoga class as a nonstressful way of developing inner confidence and bodily health.

Still on eastern disciplines, the more active among us might consider learning the basics of karate, a skill which is all about self control but which its enthusiasts also find stimulating and rewarding on a variety of personal levels. The area’s colleges are an obvious first port of call when it comes to deciding just what to choose from the multitude of options on offer, with evening classes – in anything from classical guitar to ancient history – a standard feature

many of us will already have experienced. However it’s also true that “flexibility” is built into many choices now in a way that was seldom the case in the past, and by carefully studying exactly how particular courses or classes operate you should be able to find a day and time that fits in with your existing commitments – there shouldn’t be the need to add any extra stress to what many of us already find a fairly enervating time of year. Whether it’s an art class, flower arranging, drama or swimming, you’ll find a host of options at a convenient location near you, and while it may not be your

primary objective it’s also the case that autumn classes of almost any kind give you the chance to meet new friends and discover shared interests. If the main aim is simply to develop a leisure interest, the scope is virtually limitless, because the range and sophistication of the courses now available is probably at an all time high, while if it’s academic – or something specifically related to your line of work – it may be more about finding exactly the right course that fits into a pattern of learning you have already developed.

For some it may simply be about being able to exchange a few pleasantries with people in a country you aim to visit on holiday, or it could be you already do a bit of painting, writing, or something similarly creative and are hoping to take what you’ve already achieved to the next level. The advertisers in this feature offer a broad selection of the sort of choices on offer, and are a great place to look for inspiration – those otherwise dreary late-year nights really can be used to open up a wealth of fun and positive opportunities.

The annual event will, say organisers, be once again a great venue for gardeners and wouldbe growers to spend a useful and informative Saturday afternoon. The classes include: Flowers, Baking, Jams, Vegetables and Children’s Section. Once again, there will be a variety of stalls to interest young and old alike. The stalls will include: Plants, RNLI Goods, Baking and Bottle Stall. Doors open for viewing at 2pm and our Prize Giving is at 2.30pm. All entries are sold for RNLI funds.

A will is an essential legal document that details your intentions as to the disposal of your estate following death. Dying without a will, known as being intestate, means that the statutory provisions for succession will be applied and your money, property or possessions will be distributed in terms of the Succession (Scotland) Act 1964, which may not accord with your wishes. In Scotland, if there is no will, a spouse or civil partner has certain automatic prior rights in relation to the heritable home in which

the lomond clinic

they reside and also in relation to part the moveable estate. In addition to this, any children, spouse or civil partner also have legal rights to a portion of the deceased’s moveable estate. In a situation of intestacy, any property that remained thereafter would pass to the children, or next closest living relative thereafter. If there are no further relatives then it falls to the crown. It should be noted that, even where there is a will, those entitled to claim legal rights can choose to do so, whether they have been included in the will or not. The rules surrounding succession can be complex and I suggest you speak to your solicitor if you require further advice.

CHECK OUT BIKE ORIENTEERING RACE Riders are invited to sign up for a mountain bike orienteering event at Mugdock Country Park this month. The Scottish Mountain Bike Orienteering event takes place on Sunday August 4 and offers the challenge of orienteering while riding a bike. It is a “score” event, which means that participants aim to score as many points by reaching checkpoints with different values in a maximum time of three hours. The event is part of the MBO Score National League 2019 and attracts all kinds of riders, including beginners and leisure riders, as well as national championship and International GB Team riders. A spokesperson said: “Mountain bike orienteering is for anyone who loves being outdoors, likes a challenge, enjoys riding new areas and wants a friendly, lowkey event. “Anyone can take part as long as they have a bicycle and

DON’T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON FELT DO IT ONCE - DO IT RIGHT! helmet. You can even take the kids with you as a ‘Generation Team’. “Competitors take part in the same event and course, with each rider pushing to their own chosen limit. Riders can stop and enjoy the views or ride their legs off!” Mountain bike orienteering has many benefits. The spokesperson added: “Our sport expands people’s horizons and helps them to become more confident in exploring new areas as well as testing and developing map reading skills.”

Traditional flat roof coverings become brittle and deteriorate over time.

WILD WEEKEND WITH THE RSPB The Princess Royal presented awards to military and civilian staff

PRINCESS AT FASLANE’S CELEBRATION The weekend of August 3 and 4 offers the chance to delve into the secret world of miniature beasts at RSPB Loch Lomond – from the buzz and hum from the meadows to the underwater mysteries of the pond. Wellies are advised for this entertaining late summer look at the seething maelstrom of small but perfectly formed life that lies waiting to be discovered at RSPB Loch Lomond at Gartocharn (from 10.30am to 4pm) – tickets £6.50 per child (adults free) or £5 for RSPB members. You can book your place by email at loch.lomond@rspb.org.uk or call 01389830670.

The Royal Navy allowed unprecedented access to HM Naval Base Clyde recently welcoming hundreds of submariners, veterans, families and support workers to Faslane. The event marked the 50th anniversary of the Continuous At Sea Deterrent (CASD). The Royal Navy Submarine Service was entrusted with the mission of delivering and operating the country’s nuclear deterrent in 1969 and since then has successfully kept at least one ballistic submarine patrolling at sea, consecutively and continuously, every single hour of every day. To mark the Naval Base’s vital importance to the mission, HRH The Princess Royal visited Faslane to attend a parade and meet some of the men and women who have helped protect the country by maintaining the deterrent.

It was believed to have been the biggest single gathering of Royal Navy submariners since the Second World War. The visitors were treated to the usually secret sight of a Vanguard class submarine completely out of the water, when the base’s massive Shiplift facility opened its doors to reveal one of the 16,000 tonne vessels undergoing routine maintenance. The list of jobs, trades and specialisms involved in the design, construction and maintenance of the deterrent is almost endless – shipyard workers, designers, engineers, security forces, administrators, cleaners, welfare

staff, and dockside support workers have all featured. Companies from around the UK have also played a role, making it a truly national endeavour spanning successive generations. Known as Operation Relentless, it is the longest sustained military operation ever undertaken by the UK. While at the Naval Base, The Princess Royal took the opportunity to present awards to military and civilian staff. Gold Deterrent Patrol Pins – given to those who have completed 20 or more deterrent patrols – and HM Naval Base Clyde Long Service Pins – for those completing 30 years’ service at Clyde – were among the awards.

SCHEME AIMS TO ENCOURAGE EXPLORING booklet include inspiration for perfect picnics, a wildlife spotting game and a guide to growing greenery for wee gardeners.

TOWER TO EXPAND

Children can collect stickers from Trust places as they tick off the big adventures that they complete.

Helensburgh’s Tower cinema is going to extend its premises following a go-ahead from planning officials. An entrance foyer, bar, auditorium and four function suites are included in the two-storey addition, however plans for an outdoor area on the second floor were scrapped due to concerns from neighbours about smokers and a lack of privacy. The extension is a modern modular addition comprising large areas of glazing, flat roofs and glass balustrades. The new spaces create an entrance foyer, bar, auditorium, four function suites, teaching workshops and toilets. A report by council planning officer Frazer MacLeod said that the extension would contribute positively to tourism and recreation in Helensburgh town centre.

National Trust for Scotland encourages explorers

With the end of the school holidays still a couple of weeks away many families may well be thinking about some interesting ways to keep the offspring amused as boredom sets in. The National Trust for Scotland and supermarket chain Lidl have teamed up to get families exploring Scotland and enjoying its national and natural treasures. The teams at the Trust and Lidl have put their heads together to create the Lidl Book of Big Adventures series – a seasonal booklet that’s full of ideas

for spending fun family time together in Scotland. Copies are available to pick up at the Trust’s Arduaine Garden, Crarae Garden, Geilston Garden and the Hill House in Argyll and dozens of other Trust places across Scotland, as well as at all Scottish Lidl stores. Activities featured in the summer

Ross Millar, Regional Director at Lidl comments “We know how valuable spending time together as a family is. It’s for this reason that we have created the Lidl Book of Big Adventures series which is full of ideas for spending fun family time together and supports our customers in leading healthy and active lifestyles. We hope that people have trolley loads of fun exploring the Scottish landmarks this summer.” Mark Bishop, Director of Customer & Cause for the National Trust for Scotland said: “From castles to coastlines, art to architecture, wildlife to wilderness, there is so much to explore and enjoy across Scotland. We’re looking forward to welcoming families on their travels to our beautiful places, as they spend time together experiencing what they love about Scotland.” For information visit www.nts. org.uk/lidl.

SHIPPING CONTAINER CALMAC TO RUN KILCREGGAN FERRY An online news CONVERSIONS! service reports Shipping containers are great for transporting all kinds of items. Since the 1950’s companies have been able to transfer heavy equipment, bulk items, and just about any other product across international waters to reach their destinations. Currently, there are 20 million shipping containers across the globe.

that the Kilcreggan ferry service is to be taken over by CalMac after Clyde Marine’s current contract expires.

Of those 20 million containers, however, only 10 million are actually being used for transport or any other practical usage. That means approximately 10 million shipping containers are unused or being used for storage and other such uses.

The news came via the Lochside Press site which added that the contract with Strathclyde Passenger Transport had built in flexibility for Clyde Marine to continue running the service for another five years, while waiting for Transport Scotland to take it over, and it was widely thought that Clyde Marine would continue to operate the lifeline service for some years.

Why don’t we do something about that? Take any single container, and after a few professional modifications you’ll soon have a quality space for cost effective, Eco Friendly living! The world is changing and there is no reason you should confine yourself to a boring workplace inside an even duller office building. Why not change your work life with a creative and portable office?

People are increasingly looking for creative home and business space options now! Gone are the days when everyone desires the same exact house with a white picket fence. People have changed and have placed less importance on such trivialities. People need shelter — and shipping containers, provided they are properly modified and of high quality, can actually be great living options in 2019.

But it is now expected that the Greenock-based company will only run the service until this autumn.

Why not contact us now or pop down to visit our Show Home in Helensburgh – we look forward to meeting you! – James Steel, Steel & Co.

The crew would be transferred with the Chieftain ferry still being used initially for the link with Gourock on a charter basis.

Kilcreggan Ferry The Chieftain

The news was welcomed by Dumbarton constituency MSP Jackie Baillie. “I have maintained an active interest in the Kilcreggan Ferry since we all campaigned so hard to secure its future and recently met with the Minister responsible for ferries, Paul Wheelhouse, to discuss the service.” she said today. It has now reached the point where Transport Scotland is working with SPT and Clyde Marine to transfer the service and secure its long term future for our local community.

Lomond School Launches 2020 Scholarships Following the success of the scholarship programme launched on the back of the schools recent 40th Anniversary Celebrations, Lomond School Principal, Johanna Urquhart, is pleased to announce that Lomond School will be welcoming scholarship applications for the academic year 2020/2021 at the school’s Open Morning on 28 September 2019. The scholarship programme is open to applications for both day and boarding places from Junior 5 to Senior 6 and scholarships will be awarded for Academic Excellence, Music, The Creative Arts, Sport and the David Arthur All-Rounder Scholarship. Like all young people attending Lomond School, Lomond Scholars will benefit from the excellent systems in place which help pupils to achieve their very best. Excellent academic achievement is supported by small class sizes, dedicated teaching staff, superb facilities and a significant emphasis on pupil happiness, health and wellbeing. While academic success is at the core of what the school strives to achieve, there is also a strong emphasis on developing pupils through involvement in a wide range of activities, closely linked to the school philosophy and values. The continuous support, encouragement and guidance provided by Lomond School’s dedicated teachers and staff team ensures that every pupil receives a tailored education and the personal support and guidance needed to help them achieve their full potential.

Beyond the classroom, Lomond School provides many opportunities or young people to explore their interests and talents further and pupils enjoy a very wide variety of extra-curricular clubs and sports. They also have access to life changing experiences such as the recent trip to Tanzania where pupils worked with Moving Mountains Trust to develop and improve educational facilities and infrastructure in the Ng'aroni community.

Principal, Johanna Urquhart comments: “Beyond the superb teaching, as well as the help and support our teachers and staff provide, the school itself has a very warm and welcoming environment where young people support each other and celebrate each other’s achievements. In many ways this is the backbone of much of our pupils’ success, at a time in their lives when peer acceptance and acknowledgement is so important, the family feel that Lomond School has is genuine and pupils really want to see each other succeed. We are looking forward to providing more opportunities for young people to benefit from everything we have to offer through our Scholarship Programme for 2020.”

COWAL ALL SET FOR A CEILIDH

UPGRADE FOR VISITOR SITES Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park Authority is investing over half a million pounds to upgrade and improve facilities at key visitor sites on West Loch Lomond. Following a successful bid to Visit Scotland’s Rural Tourism Infrastructure Fund, the National Park Authority will be upgrading visitor facilities at three of the most popular locations on West Loch Lomond in the latter part of the summer. Luss, Tarbet and Inveruglus will all benefit from the investment with facilities such as toilets, parking and bins being upgraded and modernised. A motorhome toilet disposal point at Tarbet is also being introduced as well as 24 hour access toilets at both Tarbet and Inveruglas.

If you thought the Cowal Highland Gathering was all about traditional games events it’s worth having a look at this year’s programme, because that’s only part of the story. Fans of Scottish music will be flocking to this year’s Cowal Highland Gathering to enjoy some of the most exciting acts currently on the circuit – like, for example, the superb Heron Valley (whose music recalls the country-

style rhythms of Fleetwood Mac). The famous Ceilidh Tent – always one of the event’s main attractions – will this year boast a fantastic line up of talent, headed up by the multi-award winning Skerryvore.

“We’re thrilled that the Gathering now has a reputation around the world not just for its spectacular highland dancing, piping and heavy athletics events but also for its top class traditional Scottish music.

The Tiree band, two-time winners of Scotland’s traditional music’s ‘Live Act of the Year’ award, are no strangers to the Ceilidh Tent having played it in the past but will return this year after a meteoric rise to fame to wow a new audience with their unique, high energy set.

“We now have people who come primarily for the music, with the other events playing second fiddle”.

The Friday music event is Gig at the Gathering, sponsored by Belhaven, which will once again feature a brilliant selection of ceilidh performers.

“We’ve been privileged to host a number of Scotland’s most celebrated musicians over the last few years and they love coming back.”

Cowal Highland Gathering chairman Ronnie Cairns said:

This year’s Cowal Highland Gathering runs from Thursday August 29 to Saturday August 31, and there’s full information at www.cowalgathering.com.

RED

He added: “We’re thrilled about that, because it means we’re overseeing an event which is appealing to people with all sorts of different interests.
