Lighting up St Peter’s seminary The first major public art event at St Peter’s Seminary will take place early next year. Public Art specialists NVA who are leading the ambitious £7 million scheme to reclaim the future for St Peter's seminary are staging a light and music event to mark the launch of Scotland’s Festival of Architecture St Peter’s, a decaying modernist icon in Cardross with its surrounding semi-ancient woodland will be the venue for Hinterland, a world premiere night-time event and a highlight of the Scottish Government’s Year of Innovation, Architecture and Design. It has been eight years since St Peter’s seminary and Kilmahew woods first captured NVA’s creative director Angus Farquhar’s imagination. Hinterland will take around 800 visitors each night to experience what has been called a “masterpiece of modernist architecture” in its state of total ruination before major restoration works start later in the year.

monumental experience.

Claire McNaught, Communications Coordinator said: “After almost a decade of effort to secure the site and find the funding to reclaim this world renowned building, something is finally happening up at St Peter’s seminary in Cardross. “As dusk falls to darkness, a walked route will weave through the atmospheric semi-ancient woodland of Kilmahew, arriving at the towering concrete ruin, subtly re-animated with monochromatic light and specially commissioned music. “Hinterland will give a flavour of the groundbreaking creative work that will be programmed on the site from 2018 onwards.” Tickets for Hinterland which takes place from 18th - 27th March 2016 will be on sale from Thursday 3rd December 2015. Former council buildings sold Kiln Dried Logs Wood Briquettes Wood Pellets

Quality assured firewood all dried to less than 18% moisture. Guaranteed to burn

It looks as if the council has sold its surplus properties in Helensburgh, initially valued at £500K. The properties went on sale in July, with estate agents Ballantynes based in Edinburgh handling the business. A spokesman for Argyll and Bute Council said: “The council is currently evaluating offers for the surplus properties in Helensburgh. Reports will be prepared for consideration by members in due course.”

£220,000. Suggested use of the building include a hotel, offices, retail, or a restaurant. The court closed in 2009, after 173 years of having a district court on the site. The building was designed and built by John Honeyman in 1878, on the site of the old town hall and theatre. In 1906 the building was extended northwards up Sinclair Street and included at one time the police station and the fire station. Notes from the estate agents

state the second floor has been residential accommodation but now requires complete refurbishment. On Sinclair Street, offers over £95,000 were invited for a B-listed building beside Helensburgh Central station. It was part of the town’s police office built in 1906. The sellers give suggested use of office space or for a residential development. The C-listed property in West King Street, originally built as Rhu Parish Council Chambers, was advertised for offers over £95,000. The building was built around 1890, designed by Robert Wemyss. Modern offices on the junction of West Princes Street and James Street were put on the market for offers over £150,000. The premises became vacant because council staff are moving into the refurbished Clyde Street School. The council initially reported that the civic centre offices would be open in time for spring 2015, after delays, it is expected that staff will move in before Christmas.

A new heritage trail has been launched featuring houses, churches, shops and hotels. All feature in a leaflet produced by the Rosneath Peninsula West Community Development Trust. Cove and Kilcreggan is thought to have the largest concentration of Alexander ‘Greek’ Thomsonattributed architecture outside Glasgow, and Historic Scotland’s website lists a remarkable total of 88 listed buildings in this small area. The Lochside News website tells us that the trail starts at Kilcreggan’s pier – 118 years old next week and the oldest wooden pier on the Clyde still in regular use – and runs to the Barbour cemetery. Along the way, there is information about Kilcreggan village, the Kilcreggan Hotel, Cove Burgh Hall, the gates to the former Hartfield House, the Thomson-designed Dhualt bridge,

Chalmers, James Sellars, John Honeyman, William Leiper and William Motherwell. The trail covering the west of the peninsula was produced by Ann Bray and Richard Reeve of Kilcreggan, and Richard said a companion guide to the eastern coast would soon be compiled. Richard said: “The trail is for information for local people but more specifically for visitors to give them a wee taster and arouse curiosity in the area. “We printed 250 leaflets of the west trail and will wait for feedback etc before printing an additional 250. It was funded by a grant from the Health and Wellbeing Fund of the Argyll and Bute Community Health Partnership.

Knockderry House Hotel and several of the Victorian mansions which are such a feature of the area. As well as Thomson, there is information about architects Campbell Douglas, James

The village is a mere 30 minutes’ drive from the bonnie banks of Loch Lomond and in plain view of the River Clyde, Cowal Peninsula and the Isle of Bute and Isle of Arran. We have live acts on every Saturday night (and the occasional Sunday afternoon), from solo acts to five-piece rock bands, discos and karaoke - check out the website for what’s on.

Plans to develop the Helensburgh pier depend on raising £25,000 to complete a feasibility study. The Helensburgh Seafront Development Project ( HSDP), a community-led organisation, have held a number of well attended presentations and ignited some great discussion with the members of the public. But Andy Walker from HSDP says: “ We all know, following recent media reports that the

council have a distinct lack of funds available so are unlikely to spend any amount of money on Helensburgh pier. “If our town want to see something done then a community led organisation like the HSDP is the only way to make that happen, which is why we need the support of the public.

“We are currently seeking to raise upwards of £25,000 to complete a feasibility study which is the typical first phase in a project such as this and should hopefully open the doors to a greater range of investment from grants and lottery. “We very much need the public to get behind us and several options for sponsorship/ donation will be available on our website and facebook soon.

“If you want to see the pier returned to glory and this great project get moving then please help in whatever way you can.” HSDP say that the biggest point to come out of interaction with the public is how many of them mistakenly assumed the council's "Pierhead Masterplan" includes doing any work to the pier itself. It doesn’t, and the fabric is deteriorating year on year. Their plan, aside from repairs,

envisages adding a partially covered walkway with historical facts and information about the town. Seating and fishing areas. A nice circular walk for the young and old alike. A paddling pool for sunny days. The creation of a 'safer' water area of the lagoon will be a great place to offer all types of activities, weather allowing, such as rowing boats, pedalos, kayaks and much more.

Running to Rio pupil challenge into lessons faster, so we designed a study that would test all of these things.” At Rhu the school was hoping to log all the miles run during November with the aim of running the distance of Rhu to Rio, the venue for the 2016 Olympic Games.

RIO RUN: Pupils at Rhu Primary are aiming to complete a 6209 mile challenge

Drive past Rhu Primary School and you’ll see dozens of pupils running round the playground. But it is not random running. The school has taken up the daily mile initiative pioneered by St Ninian’s Primary in Stirling - which has caused a nationwide stir and calls in the Scottish Parliament for it to be universally adopted. St Ninian’s undertook the initiative some three years ago and report, despite the rise in childhood obesity across the UK, none of the children at the school are overweight.

The extent of the benefits have yet to be determined, but researchers from Stirling University are undertaking a comparative study to look for quantitative evidence of the physical, cognitive and emotional benefits of the daily mile. Dr Colin Moran, who is leading the study, said: “The children at St Ninians don’t seem to have problems with obesity; they seem happier and staff say they settle

This will involve all pupils in running one mile a day around the school playground. If they can collectively run 6,209 miles – they will have run from Rhu all the way to Rio. This mighty challenge was started by Commonwealth Silver Medallist Hurdler, Chris Baillie, who coaches at Helensburgh Amateur Athletics Club. A spokeswoman for Argyll and Bute Council said it was up to individual schools to implement physical education, so the scheme would not be rolled out across the county. She said: “Whilst we think this is a good idea and support schools being involved it is not something that we would be insisting all our schools take up.”

BANANA SKINS

FURTHER FATHER PRRs Following on from last month’s topic of Parental Rights and Responsibilities, I have been asked to further explain how a father can obtain these PRRs. The first recommendation would be to approach the other parent and request that they enter into an agreement which will convey the rights and responsibilities on you which you would have enjoyed had you been registered on the child’s birth certificate or married to the mother. Such an agreement is provided for under S.4 of the Children (Scotland) Act 1995. The agreement must be registered in the Books of

Council and Session in order to be effective. As a member of the Family Law Association, I would always advocate that it is in the best interests of those involved to attempt to resolve family disputes directly with each other. However, when this is not possible the courts can be asked to adjudicate and a court action can be raised against the other parent. Section 11 of the ’95 Act allows a person to seek an order granting PRRs on them. It is often the case that this type of court action will also include a request to the court to regulate a specific aspect of parental rights, such as contact or residence issues.

DECEMBER 2015 - What's Up Doc

Goodbye eyesore hello new store

with

Dr Nick Dunn

This month:

Rosneath residents are celebrating after an eyesore building was finally demolished. The former community centre which sits next to the Coop will be the site of a new extended Coop store. The building stood empty and derelict for many years, with many calls for it to be demolished, and years of complaints from residents and councillors that it was ‘an eyesore’ and dangerously obstructed drivers’ views at a busy junction. The Co-op was first given planning permission to demolish the building and extend its nearby store back in 2008, but there was no progress until recently, despite repeated complaints from the public and

councillors. A spokesperson for the Cooperative Food said: “Work has begun . It is expected that the store will open in the middle of next year.” The new store will be 350 square metres, with parking for eight cars at the rear. Lomond North Cllr Maurice Corry said:” I am delighted that work is taking place at last. This really is good news with the project being very overdue and after much contact with the Co-op team . It will be an excellent asset for the Peninsula and I am delighted to have played my part in getting the project finally underway."

Straight from the heart…

Many think of Christmas as a time of giving. This year remember there is a gift which costs us nothing, but may be a life-saver for someone who we’ll never meet. Blood cannot be manufactured and transfusions are dependent upon people who give blood. It is the vital life source which carries oxygen and food to our organs, and contains immune cells which protect against infection. However only 4% of people well enough to do so actually give blood. Our bodies contain 5 litres of blood, and we have around 25 trillion red cells inside

us, usually leaving a few to spare! Two million units of blood are used every year in the UK, requiring 6,000 donations daily. It is used to replace blood lost during major operations, serious accidents or major bowel hemorrhage. Babies can benefit from transfusions in the womb before they are born, and it can help people with serious blood disorders such as leukaemia. It can only be stored for 35 days, so stocks need continually topped up. Consider giving a special gift this winter. Contact scotblood.co.uk to find out if you can be a donor, or phone 0345 90 90 999.

Crackdown on doorstep crime Police Scotland’s work to combat doorstep crime through Operation Monarda continues apace. Operation Monarda is designed to reduce and prevent doorstep crime. It aims to make sure that all potentially vulnerable people know what to look out for and how to stop it.

A spokesman for Neighbourhood Watch said: “ Even if you yourself feel well able to spot and stop criminals at the door, is the same true of your friends and family? There’s some simple steps they can take to dramatically reduce their level of risk. If in doubt; keep them out. “Keep front and back doors locked. Use a door chain or bar. “Only let callers in if they have an appointment and you have confirmed they are genuine. Always ask for ID though be aware this can be easily faked. “Don’t keep large sums of money at home. Ensure your doors and windows are locked. Report any suspicious activity immediately. Call 999 and ask for the police if you feel scared or threatened.” Police Scotland is working hard

to get these messages out to vulnerable people, through radio, social media and press, but they need your help. If you’d like to pass around some of the new Beat Doorstep Crime booklets to friends, family and Watch members, your local division has copies for you. Call 101 to arrange to pick up some of these. If you have any information on those carrying out these devastating crimes, you can also contact Crimestoppers anonymously. They don’t trace or record calls and you don’t have to make a statement, be a witness or go to court. No one will ever know you called. Call 0800 555 111 or go online to crimestoppers-uk. org. Superintendent Ross Aiken of the Police Scotland Safer Communities team says:

“Doorstep crime affects some of the most vulnerable within our communities and victims are often targeted due to their perceived vulnerability. It is a despicable crime which, all too often, has a hugely detrimental effect on the life of victims.”

Have YOURSELF A fire SAFE XMAS Fairy Lights and other decorative lights need more care than your everyday lights and should be switched off when you go out or go to sleep . The Christmas tree too could catch and fill a room with fire and deadly gases.

Scotland’s Fire and Rescue Service is determined that Christmas should not end in tragedy. There are extra hazards present at this time of year, but say their safety experts, a bit of common sense will prevent your celebrations being ruined.

lights; put them in a proper holder

Candles mark special occasions and create a special atmosphere but they also bring fire home. So treat them very carefully.

• Keep out of reach of children and pets

• Always put candles on a heat resistant surface • Be especially careful with tea

• Position away from curtains or furniture

• Do not move them when burning • Extinguish candles when you leave a room and never go to sleep with a candle burning.

Other top tips are: Check your smoke alarm. Be careful when cooking, especially with chip pans and never cook if you have been drinking alcohol. Remember that wrapping paper and cards should be kept away from heat sources. Turn off decorative lights including tree lights and candles and stub out cigarettes properly. A Service spokesman said: We do want you to celebrate safely. If the worst happens remember your fire escape plan, get out and stay out then dial 999 . There are many important details that go into this great holiday season. For some people their favourite part is being able to decorate their homes or workplaces with great Christmas and holiday decor. Many enjoy the carols, church services pantos and drinking warm cocoa around the fireplace. Families gather around the Christmas tree on Christmas Day for celebrations and gift exchanges. Even people who don’t believe in Christmas celebrate the holiday season with holiday fun and winter festivals. Whatever your Christmas tradition, make it an enjoyable one because the idyllic picture of the day is often preceded by a nightmare of last minute shopping and stress. This comes as a further boost to the redevelopment of Hermitage Park - it is double the amount usually awarded from the War Memorial trust’s Centenary Memorials Restoration fund. It will go towards the repair and renovation of the 40-foot memorial designed by distinguished architect Alexander Nisbet Paterson. The A-listed war memorial includes a monument, reflection pool, ironwork gates and sits within a walled garden, formerly the kitchen garden to Hermitage House.

The grant funding will support work to re-point, repair and clean the stonework on the monument and the surrounding wall as well as the corroded bronzework. Repairs to the reflection pool will make it watertight while the ironwork on the entrance gates will also be restored. The memorial site had been closed for some time due to vandalism but is now opened through the week and at weekends thanks to a partnership between the Friends of Hermitage Park Association and Argyll and Bute Council’s amenity

‘’We are still searching for a copy of his original design plans. If anyone has any information please get in touch with Melissa Simpson, our development officer on 01436 658989.’’ A bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund for a grant to regenerate the park won round approval including a grant of ÂŁ169,700 to carry out the development phase of the project. This has involved the ongoing development of a whole park plan, including proposals for the monument and memorial gardens, community consultation and investigative works to deal with flooding and erosion. The outcome of the full ÂŁ2.2m bid is due to be announced by the end of the year.

The vision for the park is to create a multi-generational meeting place for young and old in the community.

The volunteers working to restore Craigrownie Park in Cove have reached their target of £100,000. Astonishingly it is only a year since the CA first highlighted this great community effort. The Helensburgh Colour Canter, last month’s cover story, raised £3,500. Following that, an application to the Moffat Trust was successful, bringing £5,300 which took the group just over its target. Earlier we reported that the fundraising bid was supported

by Police Scotland through their Community Partnership Fund which awarded them the maximum amount of £2,500. Car boot sales, craft fairs, sponsored walks, home baking and much more also helped fill the coffers. “I am so thrilled and relieved,” said Roni Ferguson, one of the organisers. “We did it in just over the year

The needs of children of all ages and abilities will be taken into account when choosing the play equipment, and the group asked pupils from Kilcreggan Primary and nursery to draw their ideas for the park. Their Facebook pages contains updates and reveals: “ We will shortly have the park design out for everyone to see and share their thoughts on in the Cove Burgh Hall. We will tell you as soon as the date is confirmed. “ Responsibility for maintenance and insurance of the park will lie with Argyll and Bute Council, but it is thought that extra funds will cover any damage, as well as any additional projects suggested by the community, such as a sensory garden.
