LEISURE CENTRE HEARING TO BE LIMITED IN SCOPE A special hearing in Helensburgh will decide on £18.6m plans for a new leisure centre on the town’s seafront, but criticisms about its facilities are not part of the remit. Argyll and Bute councillors in Lochgilphead agreed with their officials that the plan, submitted by the council itself, should be decided via a discretionary hearing, given the level of public involvement.

the degree to which it would be “fun” and attract families and provide facilities for both children and other users as well as the commercial viability of the proposals.

The proposals have divided opinion, with 116 objections to the planning application so far and 74 statements of support.

“These are not material planning considerations in the determination of this application, but are rather operational matters for the applicant.”

The official planning report to the council states: “It is noted that many objectors have raised concerns relating to internal operations of the pool and in particular in respect of

The application also does not include the retail element which the council says is needed to pay for the project. New shops on the site would require a separate planning application, which the officials say would involve analysis of the need for them and their impact on the town.

The proposed facilities in the new leisure centre were criticised in detail by the Chamber of Commerce. There were a number of objections stating that items such as flumes, wave machines and indoor soft play areas etc. were necessary for families to encourage time and money to be spent in Helensburgh.

CEILIDH FUN HELPS BUILD FOOTPATHS 25 years ago there was very little in the way of entertainment for visitors who came to the area hoping to enjoy a traditional New Year Scottish celebration. That changed when some enterprising B and B owners stepped in and this year will mark 25 years since Lomond and Clyde Tourist Association organised the first Hogmanay Ceilidh.

25 years of the Helensburgh Hogmanay Ceilidh

The traditional ceilidh dance was immediately successful and with its simple format unchanged, the event continues to be a sell out for locals and visitors alike.

The Trust has created and repaired 12km of paths and walking routes in the immediate vicinity of Helensburgh and with the Three Lochs Way, is actively engaged on a further 50km.

One of the organisers, Anne Urquhart tells the CA: “A charity fund raising element has always been part of the mix and over the years many thousands of pounds have been raised for good causes. Recently proceeds have gone to Helensburgh & District Access Trust to help it maintain and enhance the area’s popular footpath network.”

This year the Access Trust has improved a lovely section of the popular Three Lochs Way route through the woods at Camis Eskan, created a new path for fishermen and dog walkers at Helensburgh Reservoir and also upgraded soggy areas on the Highlandman’s Road path over to Glen Fruin.

The Ceilidh helps to pay for improved pathways

They’ve had some help from Argyll & Bute Council and also Argyll Coast & Countryside Trust, but the bulk of the organising and pathwork falls to the Trust including of course the fundraising, so any donations are very welcome. And of course if you come along to the ceilidh you’ll know that your fun night is contributing to a great local cause. It is usually a sell out event. Tickets, £40, are on sale now from A. Urquhart 674922. More details on threelochsway.co.uk/ about-us/hogmanay-ceilidhhelensburgh/

CARDROSS AUTHOR LAUNCHES NEW BOOK Cardross’s award winning children’s author, D A (Dawn) Nelson has launched a brand-new book. It’s a romantic thriller and her first for adults. Dusting Down Alcudia is centred around female archaeologist Nina Esposito’s hunt for a fabled Roman necklace in Alcudia, Mallorca. Along the way, Nina hooks up with a hunky ex and a handsome rival who come together for an action packed romantic adventure. Added into the mix is a billionaire businessman who will stop at nothing to claim the necklace as his own. Dawn, now of Cardross, was brought up in the mill village of Neilston. She attended Eastwood High School in Newton Mearns and trained to be a journalist with the Glasgow, South & Eastwood Extra. Said Dawn: “This is a book for anyone who likes a great story, a bit of romance and tonnes of adventure.

541464

scott-leishman@hotmail.co.uk www.scottleishmanplumbingandheating.co.uk

“Nina is half Glaswegian, half Spanish. In fact, it was her late Mallorcan father who first told her about the fabled lost

necklace. When she finds the diary of an old treasure hunter, Nina knows she must go and find the necklace or die trying. Along the way, she meets up with her old flame Roberto and a hated rival, Jay Reynolds. ”The story was inspired by a trip Dawn took to Alcudia with her husband, Ian. While the modern resort didn’t attract her attention, it was the mediaeval old town and surrounding Roman sites that Dawn fell in love with. She said: “One day, whilst sitting outside a café in the Old Town – the one I base the café in the book on – I thought ‘what if someone came here hunting for Roman treasure?’ and a story began to form in my mind.”

Dawn has made a short PDF character book available for free on her website danelsonauthor. com/dusting-down-alcudiacharacter-booklet/ and click on 'Send My Free Booklet'. Her book is available as a paperback, e-book and large print paperback on Amazon.

LAYOUT DELIGHTS UK TRAIN BUFFS said: “As a club we felt it was appropriate to build the layout in time for the centenary of the end of the war. It was premiered at Model Rail Scotland this month.”

Model Railway

It used to be a very traditional present, a model railway layout for Christmas to delight Dads as much as the children. But model railways are not just child’s play. Here in Helensburgh there is a very grown up group who have garnered great renown around the UK this year with a new layout based on the narrow gauge railways that were developed by both sides during the First World War. It was designed to coincide with the 100 year anniversary of the end of that war. Over the year

they have been touring it round several exhibitions up and down the United Kingdom The Helensburgh Model Railway club explained that the narrow gauge railways were developed from the existing French railways and were used to supply the front lines, transport troops and evacuate casualties. Kenny Gray from the Club

The layout is 16' x 2' and the trains travel from a harbour, through a ruined village, across the countryside to a forward depot. The buildings and the rolling stock are a combination of kits, ready to run and scratch built and we’ve incorporated the sound and flashes of distant gunfire in the backscene to help enhance the wartime mood. The Club dates from the summer of 1989 when a group of people met to see if a Model Railway Club could be formed in the town under the guidance of the late Archie Allan and Gilbert Hutcheson. The club eventually joined the Association of Model Railway Societies of Scotland and members have taken their layouts all around the country delighting fellow enthusiasts. Pictures of layouts past and present are on the club’s website and Facebook page, or email enquiries@helensburghdmrc.co.uk

Pupils have been helping at the park

Thanks to funding of £10,000 from the National Lottery, Hermitage Academy can now run a project with the Friends of Hermitage Park to create a community kitchen garden in the park. In May pupils started visiting the park, initially to help the Friends of Hermitage Park prepare the park for opening to the public. In September they started work on the plots which they will be using to grow produce. Pupils have learned how to safely prune and chop down trees, plant seeds and trees, take down old fences and repair new fences using the salvaged wood, create a log pile and prepare beds by raking them or mulching them. They are hoping to plant a herb garden, a fruit cage, a vegetable plot and make use of the salvaged greenhouse.

In addition, they have practised the skills of communication, cooperation and problem solving as well as improving their physical and mental health. A group of S6 pupils have now started researching what affects mental health, including gardening, physical exercise and community involvement, and they will be sharing this information with their fellow pupils and the local community. They will also conduct a short survey on mental health to discover whether or not their project has improved the mental health of those involved and the local community who use the park.

A small, Helensburgh-based organisation that has been successfully tackling the big issues of social isolation and loneliness has celebrated its new status as a registered Scottish Charity. Visiting Friends provides a free, one-to-one volunteer befriending service for elderly people in the Helensburgh district (including Luss, Cardross and The Peninsula). It’s calculated that social isolation and loneliness – which affects both our physical and mental health – can increase our risk of death by 29%. “It’s increasingly recognised that this is a national problem and it affects people of all ages across the social divide,” says Visiting Friends’ Manager, Jayne Burnett. Volunteers can register their interest by calling 01436 671613, emailing jayne@visitingfriends. org or visiting the charity office at 14 Colquhoun Square.

The project to create a Scottish motorsport centre near Arrochar perhaps is not that well known, but it took an important step forward recently, writes Nick Cowie. The idea is to celebrate Scotland’s rich history of motorsport success, forged by names including Jim Clark, Jackie Stewart, Jimmy McRae and Dario Franchitti in a tourist attraction carved into a hillside near the classic hairpin on the Rest and Be Thankful. Businessman and motorsport enthusiast Boyd Tunnock has already made a substantial donation to help get the project underway and the project was recently given a further boost with the granting of charitable status. Now the five trustees, all of whom have an involvement in motorsport, are looking to carry out a feasibility study and generate financial backing. One of the driving forces behind the plan is Douglas Anderson who successfully brought the Monte Carlo Rally back to Scotland in recent years. He hopes the

centre will breathe new life into the popular A83 stop-off on the famous stretch near Arrochar, a famed location in the sport for decades. He said: “The location has great significance in motorsport terms because of the famous hill climb races and international rallies. It was seen as the ultimate test for drivers in many ways because of the steepness and conditions and many greats like Jackie Stewart raced there.

Scotland has played in international motorsport over many years.”

Veteran Scottish rally driver Jimmy McRae who still holds the record for the fastest run down the Rest and Be Thankful rally stage, said: “The Rest is known around the world as one of the classic rally stages and is renowned by drivers and motorsport enthusiasts alike. “This project is a tremendous initiative which would acknowledge the important part

Sir Jackie Stewart is backing the heritage centre plan. In a recent interview he said: “It is the ideal place to celebrate Scotland’s impressive motorsport heritage and the idea is to mark that connection within a permanent exhibition space, but the project itself is much more than that. “The building would be a multiuse facility which could be used by the local community for film, business and cultural events and

there would also be retail and a restaurant area. Discussions with officials from Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park, VisitScotland, the Forestry Commission, Transport Scotland, MSPs and local politicians have already been positive. Councillor Aileen Morton, leader of Argyll and Bute Council, said: “This is a really innovative idea; a visitor centre taking in the

stunning scenery of the Rest and Be Thankful would surely be very popular. The council is supportive of anything which takes advantage of the area’s natural beauty. FLOWER CLUB HISTORY SPANS 62 YEARS Clubs in Scotland as well as one of the first clubs to become affiliated to Scottish Association of Flower Arranging Societies.

Jeanette Tennant was presented with the Memorial Quaich

The club’s history is a fascinating portrait of how society has changed. Marilyn Bevan the current chairman told us in a 60th anniversary interview that in the early days formal lunches would have a strict dress code of hats and gloves.

Helensburgh Flower Club has a number of interesting demonstrations and events coming up this year including a Christmas Workshop in December and a Hands-on day in January. New members are always welcome. The Club meets on the second Tuesday of every month at 2pm between September and June in the Victoria Hall. Recently the Club held their open competition with the theme of ‘Gold, Bronze and Brown’. There were a number of lovely entries for this competition which is held in memory of Mrs Constance Roberts, who founded the club back in 1957.

The winners this year were Robina Alexander in third place, Jeannie Easton in second place and Jeanette Tennant in first place. Jeanette Tennant is pictured being presented with the Memorial Quaich by Chairman Marilyn Bevan. Mrs Constance Roberts and a group of likeminded ladies held the first club meeting in a room above the old Gas Board Showrooms in Princes Street and it was one of the first Flower

December 2018 | What's Up Doc?

ARTIST CAPTURES TOWN HISTORY What's Up Doc? Visitors to the Library this month can catch the with Dr Nick Dunn

100 years of Helensburgh exhibition featuring Shandon artist Dorothy Whitaker. It runs until December 21st. After living abroad a couple of years ago Dorothy and her husband Phil moved to a house in Shandon with a huge garden and enough space to set up an art studio. In a recent interview she said: “When I got older I thought ‘I want to smell the Scottish air down the Clyde, so we moved to Shandon, and Helensburgh hasn’t really changed from when I used to visit for the day when I was younger.”

This month: FIT TESTING... In Scotland all people over 50 are sent a kit to test their poo to help early detection of possible bowel cancers.

attended the Glasgow School of Art. She lived in Ghana and Malawi for many years where the culture and bright colours influenced her work and later in Perth Australia.

The new “FIT” (Faecal Immunochemical Test) test gives a more accurate result which is not affected by medicines or food intake, indicates severity of hidden bleeding and importantly, is much easier to use than the original kits.

As well as her exhibitions and TV appearances, her work is in many private collections around the world, including in Ireland, Shanghai, China, Canada, USA, Holland, Japan, Africa and Australia as well as the U.K.

“We have a studio here right at the front of the garden and we planted lots of flowers to attract bees. It looks out over the Gareloch, it’s lovely.”

Already the bowel screening teams are seeing increased return rates from people, increasing early detection, and survival from bowel cancer. So far 5,000 cancers have been diagnosed

Before moving to her present home, Dorothy lived in Glasgow and

and treated from 2.2 million people contacted to take the test. However I was surprised to learn that only 6 out of 10 people return samples, given that it is such a simple test. I wondered if sometimes people are simply too busy, and put the kits to one side, then forget to go back to them, or lose them? If you are one of these people, or know someone who hasn’t responded then it’s worth taking action. If you contact 0800 0121 833 or look up www.nhsinform. scot/bowelscreening and they will send a new kit. It’s never too late!

Support CARDROSS GARDEN IS AMONG UK’S BEST Groups Geilston Garden, in Cardross, was named on the list of top 100 Gardens after readers of Garden News magazine picked their favourite local landscapes. The centre’s walled garden, on the banks of the River Clyde, dates back over 200 years and also features a playground and mini maze for children. The magazine commented: “It is a testimony to good landscape design – with the sum of its parts being greater than the individual constituents. These parts comprise a large walled garden with a dominating 100-ft Wellingtonia tree (Sequoiadendron giganteum) in the centre of the lawn, a kitchen garden and woodland area.” Alison Farrell, head gardener at Geilston, said: “We are delighted to have been selected as one of the UK’s top 100 gardens. “It is of tremendous pride for both staff and our fantastically supportive team of volunteers that

December 2018 | A Sense of Christmas

Try a sense of serendipity this

Christmas

Wandering around the local shops in search of inspiration it occurred to me that it is a far more pleasant experience than shuffling in the city or the mall (writes Nick Cowie).

Helensburgh Baptist Church Saturday 15th December from 2pm

There’s the serendipity element of seeing someone or something you haven’t seen for a while and you can also allow yourself a wee pat on the back for helping the local economy because buying locally, according to research carried out by the Chambers of Commerce helps everyone.

A recent report stated: “Every pound that leaves your area is largely lost to your community, in fact research suggests that every single pound you spend gets recycled so well by local communities that it ends up being worth £3 to the wider community. Local business owners too are more likely to

get involved and to contribute to community efforts.” We’ve all heard the tales of hard times on the high street, but there’s strong evidence that more people are consciously deciding to eat at locally owned restaurants and buy from locally owned stores and shops. It was a trend noted by the British Independent Retailers Association which reported that more traditional independent shops opened than were closed in Britain’s town centres, whilst the national chains continued to see a fall. Savvy shoppers` know that shopping locally is not in any way an inferior choice. Independent shops often stock items which are made locally and aren't available elsewhere. Buy a dress or a handbag or unusual gift

item by a fledgling designer and there is a real sense of having made a special effort to be different from the herd. Your independent trader should be able to recommend products and give you the story behind them. It makes the retail experience that much more pleasant. You’ll be doing your bit for the environment too. When you shop at local butchers, bakers, farm shops and greengrocers, or indeed eat in local restaurants it is also likely that a decent percentage of the produce has had a short field-to-fork journey. In fact some of the shops take a particular pride in sourcing within 50 or fewer miles. Along with supporting local farmers, it means the food is likely to contain more nutrients,

have less packaging and have used up less diesel getting here. So when did you last really look around your local area. I’ll bet you’ll surprise yourself at the range of goods and services on offer. Jewellery and gifts, accessories, hardware, delis, furniture, antiques, crafts, galleries, china, crystal ware, fashion, flowers, shoes as well as the butcher, baker, and probably somewhere a candlestick maker are complemented by hairdressers, beauticians,

opticians, pharmacists, and when your feet get sore there’s your favourite local café on hand to dispense a well earned coffee and cake. Whatever your Christmas tradition, make it a fun one. And include checking out your local retailers for food and presents. You’ll save fares, petrol and pollution – and if you do get it wrong, it’s not so far to go to change the present for something else.

This month: SEPARATION

PETS AT CHRISTMAS

Separating from a spouse or partner is always going to be emotionally difficult, whether the split is acrimonious or not.

The various Animal Welfare charities remind people with pets that there are some simple Christmas dos and don'ts:

assets and therefore liability for those debts will require to be resolved. Once these big matters have been discussed, it is important that the less obvious tasks are not forgotten about. This can include ensuring you remember to change the terms of your will or changing the beneficiary of any death benefits from your pension.

The decision to separate can have a number of significant consequences. As well as impacting on your living arrangements, you may have financial commitments or children together.

• Many plants are poisonous, including yew, ivy berries and poinsettia. Prickly Christmas trees are dangerous too, if dogs are attracted to their needles.

In circumstances where there are children of the relationship, then reaching agreement regarding their care and welfare arrangements will generally take priority. This is fairly obvious.

• Give your pets a treat, but remember that too much rich food isn't good for animals. Some seasonal foods, such as grapes, sultanas and raisins are toxic to dogs, and chocolate can actually kill them. • Splinters of poultry bones are also dangerous, they can become stuck in their throats or even pierce their intestinal tract.

It is unlikely that it would be appropriate for a former partner to make decisions on your behalf should you lose capacity. As a result, a Power of Attorney may require to be revoked.

Secondary to that, but just as obvious, is addressing financial matters and division of any assets. Unfortunately, in the current climate it may well be that debts outweigh any

• Don't ignore your pets' needs while you’re celebrating – keep to a regular routine of feeding and exercise.

These are only a couple of examples. Therefore, no matter the circumstances of separation it is important that you speak to your solicitor and receive relevant advice.

ROSNEATH AWARD SUCCESS Rosneath Primary school is among eight in Argyll and Bute to benefit from an Award Scheme. A panel made up of staff from Argyll Community Housing Association (ACHA), and Argyll and Bute Council has just completed an evaluation of applications for ACHA’s Schools Award Scheme. This initiative was launched in November 2016 to commemorate ACHA’s 10 years as a housing association with a 10-year bequest of up to £10,000 per year to support projects and initiatives in Argyll and Bute schools. Each school has been given £1,000 to support a number of different initiatives such as provision of interactive smart boards, running an after school club, outdoor learning area enhancement, swimming lessons and nurture room kitchen facilities.

CYCLE PATH HAS A LONG WAY TO GO A MARKET FOR The cycle path linking CHRISTMAS Helensburgh to Dumbarton is to gain another 300m but more than £2m has still to be sourced if the path is to be complete by its 2023 target date. A report to Helensburgh and Lomond Area Committee meeting confirmed that work on a 285m stretch from Cardross station to Geilston Burn could be done and once complete, more than 1km of the route within the village will have been built.

“Within Cardross, a 785m section linking Cardross Railway Station to Ferry Road, Cardross was constructed in 2015/16. This section is well used by local residents for leisure purposes. “In 2018/19 it is planned to construct a 285m section of the route within Cardross from Cardross Station to the Geilston Burn.

Argyll and Bute Council’s executive director of development and Cycle path is popular for lesiure use infrastructure, “This section will Pippa Milne, said in route via Geilston Park her report: “The route Cardross Playing Fields and linking the edge of Helensburgh Cardross Park. This work was at Hermitage Academy/Waitrose included within the Roads to Cardross Station has a total Service works programme to length of 5.2km, of which a total start in October 2018.” of 1.6km has been constructed.

In many continental and Scandinavian towns the annual Christmas market is a main highlight of the season, and is as much a celebration as a retail occasion – which is why the most famous markets are major tourism attractions too. That sort of culture has still to develop its full potential in Scotland, but the Christmas Market at Lomond Shores (December 12 to 24) gives a flavour of what the festive season is all about. With artisan gifts and crafts, and plenty of hot food and mulled wine, the market has all the right ingredients for an interesting Christmas shopping excursion – open from 10am till 4pm throughout.

B AND B RETHINK

Plans for a boutique bed and breakfast and kayaking centre at Craigendoran’s former pier have been redesigned. Argyll and Bute Council has received a new set of plans for the development, which was first submitted for planning permission in May. The layout of the building has changed from the previous application, with the guest wing now behind the main area instead of to the side, supported off the edge of the pier. The planned B&B, named Go Coastal, also has a sloping roof as opposed to a flat one. Corstorphine and Wright Architects say that the project would rejuvenate ‘an antisocial, dead-end space’ and ‘take back some of its historical significance.’

MAKE A WREATH Friends of the Linn Gardens are kicking off the festive season with an interactive afternoon of wreath making on Sunday 9th December in the Gibson Hall, Garelochhead from 2-5pm. Dr Jim Taggart, and others, will be offering help and instruction using seasonal foliage from the garden on how to make your own Christmas wreath. Admission is only £5 -including the materials needed and children are free, so join us and learn the art of this tradition. Teas. Coffee, juice and home baking will be available throughout the afternoon with proceeds going towards the Friends of the Linn. Friends say: “Perhaps a little bit of the Linn Garden hanging on your door will bring some festive cheer.”

PARK ENTERS LANDSCAPING PHASE The key event in the town this year has been the renovation of Hermitage Park, and as Christmas approaches the end of the construction and landscaping work is in sight.

Park's famous cranberry horse undergoing restoration

Now the Friends of the Park who have been the inspiration and driving force are looking forward to getting to work on improving the planting in the park. The Heritage Lottery Funding runs for five years until March 2021 and once the building work is finished the new park will come alive with many activities planned alongside the hard work of creating a beautiful greenspace.

The Friends said, “We are excited to be entering the next phase of the project and liken it to decorating a house once the builders have left. We still have a small mountain of work to do to upgrade and improve the park now the main building work is nearly completed and we can turn our attention to the details. “We are grateful for everyone’s patience during the building phase and delighted residents

This is being donated to the park by Jim McColl and Family in honour of his father former park keeper Tom McColl. It is being made by local blacksmith David Irvine.

Here’s what some of our customers had to say about our work: “We had our shower room completely refurbished and are delighted with the finished product. It was very clear from start to finish that Stephen is passionate about his job, the quality of workmanship is first class and we have no hesitation in recommending this company. LOCH’S LIFE BEGINS AT 40 fun Helensburgh, Balloch and Haldane primary pupils joined together to carry out a very special treeplanting exercise recently – one which marks a small but important milestone in the ongoing battle to preserve the area’s finest natural asset. The effort involved planting 40 trees, one for each year in which independent charity Friends of Loch Lomond and the Trossachs has been busily striving to maintain and improve the area now known to countless thousands as a National Park Friends Chairman, James Fraser said: “It is a fine testament to the late and energetic Dr Hannah

Stirling MBE, the late Professor Gavin Arneil and other founding members that the Friends is still a vibrant organisation, as relevant today as it was back in 1978, upholding the original vision of trying to make a difference, and helping to care for what is a very special place enjoyed by millions of people from home and overseas.”

He added: “It doesn’t seem that long ago that Dr Hannah Stirling MBE and others formed the Friends and gathered an impressive 200,000 signatures, in pre-internet days, to prevent a major pumped storage hydro scheme destroying Ben Lomond.” Local MSP Jackie Baillie presented the schoolchildren with young conservation volunteer certificates while Gillian Neil of the council’s Ranger Service and Jim Biddulph, secretary of Balloch and Haldane Community Council, were also delighted to support the event. Jackie Baillie said: “It was great to see the enthusiasm of local schoolchildren planting trees around the edge of the walled garden in Balloch Castle Country Park. “This was a very fitting way to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the pioneering Friends conservation charity who have done so much over the years to protect and enhance the special qualities of Loch Lomond and the wider area for the benefit of people and nature.”

DON’T TAKE RISKS ON HILLS The warnings about local hills go out every year – and every year some unfortunate walker or climber still gets into trouble, often through making very basic errors. Even a thin covering of snow over bare rock or scree can make footholds extremely slippery, without giving enough purchase for crampon points or ice axes to bite well. Heather Morning, Mountain Safety Adviser for Mountaineering Scotland, said: “Conditions can be very treacherous at this time of year and just having the right equipment isn’t enough. “You have to be able to call on experience to know how to deal

with a whole range of conditions, both weather-wise and underfoot. “That equipment and experience must also include a map and compass and a high standard of navigational ability, because you’re not going to have the luxury of time and comfort that you do in summer. “You’re going to have to be able to navigate accurately in some pretty extreme conditions of poor visibility and while being buffeted by wind and snow”.

Routes will take longer than expected in winter conditions and many people will end up finishing in the dark, so a head torch – and spare batteries – is crucial. In fact better still is to carry a spare head torch, which saves having to faff about in the cold and dark trying to change over batteries.” Extra layers are essential, such as a synthetic duvet jacket, and an emergency bivi bag stored in the

bottom of a rucksack is highly recommended. Before even setting foot on the hill, a vital part of planning is checking the mountain weather forecast at a site such as www.mwis.org.uk. The weather in Scotland’s mountains is notoriously fickle and a specialised forecast, specific to the mountains, is essential.
