uKELELE GROuP: The group meet every 2 weeks and invite new players to come along
A community ukulele group has started up in Helensburgh and after a successful inaugural meeting, it’s set to meet every two weeks and eventually perform. It is the brainchild of Ged Dunsmore, himself a relatively novice player, who wanted to bring together some like-minded people with the aim of improving their skills and simply enjoying the music. Ged said: “It is not curriculum led. It is about passion rather than quality, but we are aiming to reach performance standard.

NUCLEAR SERVICE... passing submarines. There was never a dull moment. When they were not on duty, submariners had to fi nd ways to entertain themselves. Watching fi lms, quizzes, on-board magazines and even sport were among the popular pastimes. As young offi cer Thompson kept himself and his crewmates entertained by creating ‘radio’ programmes, which were then broadcast over the submarine’s internal speakers. It was an interest which started one St Andrew's Day when the boat dived, went deep and waited.
He said: “Some weeks later when we were having the post-exercise analysis, the exercise analysts couldn’t figure out what had happened to HMS Andrew – everyone could hear her for about three days then she just disappeared for a day. But no one could figure out where she’d gone, how’d she’d managed to just disappear. Actually, it was us

This, the inside story of Britain's nuclear deterrent, reveals the secretive life of submarines and the men who served on them; they kept their watch, and by maintaining the threat of 'Mutually Assured Destruction' helped keep Britain and the world safe.

WW1 MODEL raiL LayOut Helensburgh model railway club has created a new layout based on the narrow gauge railways that were developed by both sides during the First World War.
Members of Helensburgh Tree Conservation Trust held a tree planting event to celebrate winning a community award from the Woodland Trust's Street Tree Campaign. With a helping hand from the local Guides and Scout groups the last few trees to fi nish off the creation of an avenue of over 70 ornamental crab apples (Malus 'Rudolf') were planted on Havelock Street. This was made possible by generous grants from Argyll and Bute Council's Sustainable Community Initiatives Fund and Waitrose as well as HTCT members subscriptions. Anne Urquhart from the Trust said: “We were also celebrating the receipt of a grant of £5000 from the Woodland Trust to help with the care and maintenance of
street trees within the town. Thanks also to Liz Grant and the Coffee Club for the hot chocolate and scones after the planting.” The celebratory planting of trees marked the winning of a community award from The Woodland Trust’s Street Tree Campaign, which is supported by the People’s Postcode Lottery. Iain Duncan, convener of the trust, said: “For years to come their rich red blossom will transform this street every spring. The trust is hoping to encourage more residents to become “tree guardians” by caring for vegetation near their home.
The layout is 16' x 2' and the

February 2018 – What's Up Doc?
WAR Memorial Families Project The Friends of Hermitage Park have decided to undertake a War Memorial Families Project to gather information from local families on relatives commemorated on the memorial. Coverage of the restoration work to the memorial on Facebook resulted in quite a few local people getting in touch with stories of their relatives named on the memorial and the Friends thought it would be a nice project to record the lives of the war dead. So far they have about thirty local families signed up to take part and they have provided information on the lives, interests, occupations and family stories about their relatives. Other interested families are invited to get in touch. Fiona Baker from the Friends said:

This month: Female intuition‌?
“We are now starting to plan this project in detail and Stewart Noble of Helensburgh Heritage Trust is helping us. We will apply for a ‘Supporting Communities’ grant to help pay for the costs of recording to produce a high quality book to keep in the Pavilion where everyone can look at it. The Council run grant fund is for projects starting in April 2018 and is decided by public vote so the Friends will want people to go online and vote when it opens. Keep in touch on the Helensburgh Hermitage Park Facebook page.
Research published last month revealed that women are more likely to have their heart attacks misdiagnosed than men.
Fortunately in many of these cases, the women persevered to be listened to and eventually were diagnosed and treated in hospital.
The reasons suggested for this were that they are less likely to have the same “classic symptoms with which we are all familiar, including central crushing chest pain, pain down the left arm and nausea.
It can be difficult to get diagnoses right first time, all the time, and we sometimes rely on people returning to the doctor when things “just don’t feel right or if symptoms are not settling.
It seems that women, particularly over the age of 60, have more subtle signs, such as shortness of breath, stomach pains, dizziness, jaw pain or mild aches in the chest. Some had been diagnosed with indigestion, panic attacks, muscular pains or toothache.
In fact we often refer to “safetynetting – reminding people to return if things worsen – as a means of reducing clinical risk. So remember not to be afraid to return to your doctor, if your intuition tells you things aren’t right!

Book takes a biblical nature trip A retired Helensburgh doctor has compiled a fascinating book about the flowers, fruits, herbs, birds and animals mentioned in the Bible. Dr Krishna Goel, a former Consultant Paediatrician at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children, has had a lifelong fascination with botany. He published an earlier book about the remedial effects of plants. This, his latest publication, is the sequel. Before becoming a doctor, Dr Goel graduated in Botany and has never lost his interest in nature's remedies. He says: “I was born and brought up in India and I was familiar with family folklore medicine. My mother used the paste of neen tree bark to treat a boil and extract of lily leaf for earache - and it worked.” The new book, co-authored with his wife Joyce, is published in support of the Glasgow City Mission which works with adults and children who are vulnerable and disadvantaged. In it he catalogues the range of plant and animal species encountered in the Bible. It is
beautifully illustrated and as David Galloway, The President of the Glasgow College of Physicians and Surgeons says in the introduction, is obviously the result of diligent study and a deep personal respect for the meaning and application of biblical truth.

This month: ALIMENT When parties separate one of the immediate issues to arise can be the question of financial support. Particularly if one party has been financially reliant upon the other. In Scots law, there is an automatic and reciprocal obligation of aliment between civil partners and spouses. Separately, from a parent to their child, or a child accepted by them as one of their family. It is not commonly realised, but this would apply to step parents. The obligation is a duty to provide such financial support as is reasonable in the circumstances, having regard to the needs and resources, as well as the earning capacities

of the parties and generally all of the circumstances. This allows the court to apply a wide discretion to each case. The obligation of aliment between spouses is extinguished upon divorce, in line with the ‘clean break’ approach. Aliment in relation to children is payable until the age of 18, or if under 25 and reasonably and appropriately undergoing instruction at an educational establishment, or training for employment or a trade, profession or vocation. Although still considered child aliment, anyone fitting within this category would require to raise the action themselves against the parent.

Companies Offer Big Day Preview Helensburgh Flowers of Helensburgh and All Dressed Up of Alexandria have joined forces to give brides and grooms a “preview” of their wedding day. The idea came out of an open day at Loch Lomond’s Cruin venue when couples could come along and view tables set for a wedding without it being someone's actual wedding. Victoria Crighton of All Dressed Up said: “It was such a success that this year we’ve decided to roll it out on a much larger scale at The Cruin, Arden on Sunday 18th February and The Loch Lomond Arms, Luss on Sunday 4th March with some competitions to support each date. “Many local couples consider both these fabulous venues to marry in, however we want to make sure that everyone within the Community Advertiser’s coverage gets to know exactly what we are going to do on each day.” The Cruin event will see the McIntyre Suite dressed with florals and linens to showcase
the wedding decor. The team from both companies will be on hand to explain how they can transform the room using beautiful products. They hope also to take away all the stresses of planning the big day decor.
“Colour matching, floral advice, what works well and our invaluable expert knowledge will be available on the day for free to make sure each couple gets more bang for their buck.” Contacts: info@alldressedup.co.uk and info@ helensburghflowershop.co.uk
The March event will see both the Inchconnachan and Sutherland Suites at the Loch Lomond Arms similarly dressed. Vicky adds: “As well as getting a preview of how their wedding venue could look both companies will offer early booking incentive discounts on their packages, bundle packages and three fabulous competitions. We will also ask for couples to vote on a brand new centrepiece which would be offered as part of the package.”

The Helensburgh SeaFront Development Project has announced on its Facebook page that HSDP has been granted £10,000 towards a Feasibility Study from Awards for All. The announcement says that the National Lottery grant means the team now only need to raise around £7,000 to reach their target, adding: “If you would like to contribute towards the Feasibility Study please see our website for different ways to make a contribution to help us repair the Pier for you and the other townsfolk in Helensburgh & Lomond." Ian MacQuire HSDP Chair explained recently to the CA: “The project cannot go ahead without a feasibility study being completed, as this shows what can and cannot be done.
There’s also an application for Leader match funding of up to £12,000.” As we’ve reported, the project could create an enclosed lagoon for watersports and repair the town’s pier. There are also plans for a new breakwater and walkway. The HSDP's intention is to save and regenerate Helensburgh Pier, and install a Wavebreaker / Walkway which will help with fl ood prevention and also provide a calm safe environment for water sports in

The East side of the Pier would have pontoons installed to attract visitors and small craft to the town, the Pierhead will be dredged to 3m to allow ferries, the Waverley Paddle Steamer and other small craft to berth at the Pier in all tides. The Ride the Clyde 30-mile challenge on Sunday, March 25, is being run by the Scottish Huntington’s Association (SHA), the only charity in the country supporting families with the degenerative neurological condition Huntington’s disease (HD). Only 35 cyclists can take part, so if you are interested you’re advised to register as soon as possible. Scottish Huntington’s Association (SHA) is a Scottish charity established by families living with Huntington’s disease (HD) in the late 1980s in response to a lack of HD support services. “We think this is the first time this has ever been done, so it really is a chance for people to take part in something new and achieve something previously never attempted on any scale,” said SHA fundraising manager Dougie Peddie.

“It is open to families as well as serious cyclists and every penny raised will help improve the lives of people living with HD.” Everyone taking part is being asked to raise £99, money that will be used to fund the SHA’s network of HD specialists; a world leading youth support team and its financial wellbeing service. HD is a complex neurological condition with symptoms that typically begin to develop between the ages of 30 and 50. Those affected by HD may eventually lose the ability to walk, talk, eat, drink or make decisions and will eventually need 24 hour care. It is also hereditary with each child of those diagnosed at 50% risk developing the disease,

BENEFITS: Research shows walking makes you happier and has anti-aging benefits
February is traditionally the month to try to detox while increasing the amount of exercise we take. The good news is that we don’t have to do anything drastic to get fitter. Certainly a check on the wine and beer intake is never a bad idea, but a European Society of Cardiology study showed that those who just engaged in daily moderate exercise, such as a brisk walk all felt better and even experienced anti-aging benefi ts. Certainly this activity, along with a calorie check will melt away
