VIRTUAL LEJOG FOR LOCAL CHARITY Kind-hearted members of a Helensburgh gym got on their bikes to raise funds for a local mental health charity. A group of a dozen fitness enthusiasts from The Journey, which is a training group based at SOS Fitness, rode the equivalent of the classic Land’s End to John o’Groats cycling route, also known as the LEJOG. They jointly completed 874 miles on a stationary bike at the studio on West Clyde Street and within five days they had reached their initial donation target of £1000. The all-male group went on to cycle the full distance and collected a total of more than £1500 during two weeks in December. The money was presented to Jean’s Bothy, a mental health and wellbeing community hub in the town. The charity is hoping to be able to afford to purchase IT and technology equipment. The Journey and Jean’s Bothy already had a strong relationship with coaches from the gym taking Mobile Hairstylist

She explained why the gym decided to set the Jean’s Bothy challenge. Jo said: “Through our outreach with Jean’s Bothy we discovered that they have no IT resources. “Our director, Steve Losh, found out about this and thought that surely there must be a way to help. “That’s how the idea of the cycle

CEILIDH FOR CHAMPS’ FUNDS Already, the championships has benefitted from another fundraiser, when a Balloch Co-op bag packed collected £600. Colina Helen Campbell, the chairperson and piping convenor for the pipe band championships, said: “While the BPC committee members and volunteers from the dance school packed bags, members of Helensburgh Clan Colquhoun Pipe Band played at the door. OPERA COMES TO VILLAGE An annual opera tour visits Arrochar this month with the promise of a “musical mix of operatic treasures”. Opera Highlights will travel with four singers and a pianist around Scotland, performing at 17 venues. Set in a beautiful garden, director Roxana Haines’ production features a playlist of operatic classics and must-hear rarities, curated by Scottish Opera’s head of music Derek Clark. Highlights include Delibes’ “Flower Duet”, Vaughan Williams’ “Blue Larkspur in a Garden” and many more from the likes of Mozart, Lehár and Scottish Opera Composer in Residence, Samuel Bordoli. Scottish Opera 2019/20 Emerging Artist répétiteur Michael
Papadopoulos is the pianist and music director. He is joined by soprano Zoe Drummond, mezzo-soprano Jade Moffat, tenor Andrew Irwin and baritone Arthur Bruce, who is the Robertson Trust Scottish Opera Emerging Artist this season. Roxana, who directed Scottish Opera’s hit Edinburgh Festival Fringe show Fox-tot! last summer, said: “After a successful Opera Highlights autumn tour, I’m pleased to revive this show for the spring. “We have a new cast to guide you through our story, which takes
place amid the magical flora and fauna of opera. The stage has been set, decorations unpacked and the guests have all arrived, but the problem is we're still not sure whose party this is... “Audiences should prepare for an evening of charm, magic and love in all its operatic forms in a show that highlights the joy and absurdity of opera.” Opera Highlights will be at the Three Villages Hall on Shore Road on Saturday February 15 at 7.30pm. Tickets are priced £6 to £16.50. See www.scottishopera. org.uk.

GRANT SECURES FESTIVAL FUTURE It has become a firm favourite in the town’s calendar and Helensburgh’s Winter Festival will definitely be back in 2020.
Wildlife fans are invited to join a woodland walk at sunset to see wintering geese. The guided outing takes place at RSPB Loch Lomond, High Wards Farm, Gartocharn, on February 29 at 5pm. Thousands of geese spend the winter months roosting around the Loch Lomond area.
Thanks to a share of a £90,000 grant from Argyll and Bute Council, the organising committee is delighted to be able to announce that this year’s extravaganza will take place on November 28 and 29. And while it is not long since the last festival, there has already been early interest shown in the 2020 edition. Among those promising to return are the dancing and singing Betel penguins, which were such a great hit with the crowds. Betel is a charity that supports men, women and families affected by drugs or alcohol addiction and homelessness. It has six centres UK-wide, including one in Motherwell and the popular penguins were all people who had benefited from
As the sun goes down, you can watch as the geese move in from their daytime feeding areas. Walkers are advised to wear warm and waterproof outdoor clothing and footwear. The experience will last 2.5 hours. the charity’s help, raising almost £600 for the charity during the festival. Betel’s Adam Al-Ali said: “Our men and women that came to sing, really enjoyed themselves in Helensburgh bringing the ‘festive cheer’ and we are hoping that we can come and sing next year again.”

RARE BIRD SPOTTED AT CLYNDER A rare tropical bird has been spotted far from its native habitat in a garden on the Rosneath Peninsula.
HELP CLEAN OUR BEACH
The brightly coloured hoopoe does not breed in the UK and is usually found across Africa and southern Europe.
to look out of the window and there it was. I thought it looked interesting – it was a beautiful, unusual bird.”
Local residents can join a beach clean this month – and monthly thereafter through the spring and summer.
It was spotted by Helen Williams as she looked out of her house window in Clynder last month.
The UK is sometimes used as a staging post for the hoopoe on its journey from Africa to its breeding grounds.
Community group Plastic Free Helensburgh is behind the town’s beach clean on Saturday, February 29, from 10am to 11.30am. Volunteers should meet at the pier and bring suitable gloves for litter picking. It’s advisable to wear clothing to suit the conditions.
She thought the bird had escaped from someone’s aviary because it looked so exotic but fortunately she managed to grab her phone to take a photograph. The hoopoe zebra-striped wings and a bright orange headcrest. Helen said: “I’m not a bird watcher at all but I just happened
However, sightings of the bird are relatively common in the UK, with around 100 instances each year according to the @hoopoesUK Twitter page. Most spots in the UK are on the south coast of England so to see a hoopoe in Scotland is extremely unusual.

PARK’S EXCITING PLANS encouraging many people in the community to make use of the park. For example, we hope that Hermitage Academy pupils visit the park on a monthly basis and continue to develop the kitchen garden. There will be support, too, for Hermitage Primary School with their weekly Forest School visits. Hermitage Park
A newly revamped Helensburgh park is the focus of a vibrant and inspiring programme of events and activities this year. With construction works at Hermitage Park now complete and a new café due to open, the Friends of Hermitage Park have started to roll out their ambitious list of ideas and plans. This is the final year of the Heritage Lottery Fund award and it will be utilised for a range of activities in partnership with the community, as well as for developing new planting. The Friends hope that local organisations will make use of the
new facilities and assist them in developing a calendar of annual events and activities. A preliminary programme from the Friends includes workshops, such as limestone mortaring, graffiti, story-telling and drama. The park hopes to include local school pupils, Helensburgh Art Hub, Helensburgh Flower Club and many more in a series of activities, too. Fiona Baker, chair of the Friends group, said: “We will be
“In addition, the Friends will be keen to hold a series of events, again working with different groups and small businesses to encourage longterm use of the park. This will include a food event in partnership with the new café leaseholder. If people have any ideas they should get in touch.” Friends of Hermitage Park launched in 2011 with just a handful of dedicated volunteers. Their vision was to restore Hermitage Park fit for the 21st century. Through a range of funding and support they continue with their development plans. See “Helensburgh Hermitage Park” on Facebook for more information.

New Year's Day Swim 2020
SWIM RAISES £1300 FOR RNLI More than 500 brave and generous people ventured out on a cold New Year’s Day to raise £1300 for Helensburgh’s lifeboat. A total of 207 swimmers took to the chilly waters of the Gareloch to welcome in the new decade, while a crowd of several hundred spectators assembled to watch. The RNLI crew was on hand, making sure that everyone was safe. They also passed around buckets to collect money for the lifesaving organisation. Before allowing the swimmers to take to the water, one of the lifeboat’s crew and his wife took the plunge to test the water. The swimmers were rewarded with certificates provided by Donald Fullarton, as well as a hot drink from the Helensburgh Lifeboat Guild.
Ashore, volunteers Fiona Howard and Christine Richardson undertook the registration. Crew members Pete Tindal, Tom Ridsdill, Jamie Clark, Ken Miller, Neil Petrie, Andrew Bullingham, Jamie Shields, Chris Allwood, Dean Durrant and John Gabb, along with the station’s launching authorities Howard Morrison, Alan Jeffrey, Colin Redstone and Simon Fraser, collected money. Established in 1965, Helensburgh Lifeboat Station is located in Rhu Marina and provides a search and rescue service to the busy Clyde. The station operates a B class inshore lifeboat.

WHERE’S This month: DONALD, YOUR TROOSERS…? Doctors prescribing bed-rest for various ailments is very much a thing of the past. More rapid diagnosis and treatment, day surgery, and increased awareness of the dangers of immobility have very much put that idea to bed! Despite this, we know that hospital patients spend excessive time in, or by, their bed, especially in longer stay medical wards. This is not planned and may be related to staffing pressures, but there is thought to be another factor – pyjama paralysis. People in hospital, in pyjamas or hospital gowns leaving them half-exposed, tend not to feel so able to get up and
walk about. Psychologically it leaves them feeling a bit powerless and dependent. The results are harmful and includes muscle wasting after just a few days which can result in frail elderly people losing what mobility they once had. Other harm includes blood clots in the leg or lungs, delirium, pressure sores, infection, incontinence or constipation. People who are able are being encouraged to wear their own clothes in hospital, to aid their recovery and independence. Highland Health Board even have posters with the message of this title - It’s simple but can be effective!

Working with the Countryside Ranger Service they manage and create new habitats for the benefit of wildlife and visitors. In 2019 some of the projects included banishing the invasive non-native species such as Rhododendron, Himalayan balsam and Skunk cabbage. A lot of time has been spent last summer improving their wildflower identification skills at the new meadows in Balloch park with funding from Buglife. This year they will inspect and clean out the 50 bird boxes that were put up last year after finding most of them had been used. A new pond was created and planted up and a further two pond projects are coming up in 2020 with help from their partners at Froglife.

Tribute | February 2020
TRIBUTES FOR CHRIS Tributes flood in for 37-year-old ex-Royal Marine Major, teacher, businessman & athletics club President Chris Moses who sadly passed away on Sunday 12th January after a tragic accident. Chris was well-known, much respected and greatly loved by family and friends in his home village of Cardross and the surrounding area. He was the President of Helensburgh Athletics, owner of tree surgery business One Two Tree, a recently retrained maths teacher and tutor and a loving husband to Joanne, a clinical director in a veterinary practice.
spent 13 years as a Royal Marine and served in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Chris was born and brought up in Plymouth, Devon, and was a successful sprinter and semi-professional footballer with Plymouth Argyle FC in his youth. He went on to university and graduated in economics. He
Fellow director Kevin Johnson said of Chris: “He delivered everything with quiet efficiency and military precision but always with a laugh and a joke and a smile on his face. Chris knew how to motivate and lead by
Staying in Scotland after his retirement from the Royal Navy, Chris immersed himself in local life and work. He displayed his natural leadership qualities in abundance as president of the athletics club and he was also as co-race director of the Babcock Helensburgh 10k.

Having recently become a maths teacher, he taught at Vale of Leven Academy where the headteacher described him as “bright, cheerful and passionate about his new career”. Chris also tutored youngsters in the evening and ran his tree surgery business at weekends. Chris loved a challenge and once, with a friend, he cycled between Britain’s three highest mountains and then ran up them. He was also just as happy to support Joanne, a talented
horsewoman, as a groom, stable boy and driver. Kevin added: “Chris was dearly loved and respected in equal measure by the Marines he led, his fellow officers, pupils and colleagues at work and the club members that he inspired with such affection and praise. “He touched the hearts of everyone he met, made a positive impact on their lives and put a smile on their faces. He was a great man of humility, integrity and compassion and one that will be sadly missed but never forgotten.” Chris, who died in a tree-cutting accident in Rhu, leaves behind Joanne, a mum and dad, who still live in Devon, and two sisters.

Apologies to those not so keen on animals. However, for pet owners the following discussion may be a point of interest. There has been a notable increase in the number of disputes for couples following separation that involve the rightful ownership or ‘custody’ of a pet, particularly dogs. The wellpublicised dispute of Ant McPartlin and Lisa Armstrong should be a cautionary tale to all. On some occasions the dispute between former couples escalates to court proceedings; which can be financially, as well as emotionally, draining. In the event you and your partner have a pet, or are
considering bringing one onto your family, it may be worthwhile considering entering into an agreement that would regulate what would happen to them if you were to separate. This would be similar to a pre/ post nuptial or cohabitation agreement and could prevent possible conflict in the future. The agreement could regulate whether the animal would be considered to belong to one party, shared care or even who is to be responsible for costs associated with their keep. If these matters are agreed at the time the animal is adopted or purchased then it may prevent unnecessary conflict down the line.

THE BATHROOM COMPANY GLASGOW
At team TBCG we specialise in supply and installation of luxury bathrooms from concept though the installation and beyond, creating beautiful spaces to suit every client’s needs. In Cambuslang the focus of this bathroom was on luxury and relaxation. Mood lighting is a key feature in this space with recessed led lighting in the ceiling and in a feature alcove above the freestanding bath- making this this the perfect spot to lie back relax and unwind with the television on! Wall mounted waterfall taps add an extra touch of luxury. The focus of the tiling was to soften the space, which was achieved with the beautiful soft curves of the feature tile which acts as a backdrop to the elegant lines of the main attraction-the freestanding bath. Storage is always paramount in the bathroom and we echoed the shape of
the bath with a freestanding bowl on top of a minimal white wall mounted gloss vanity unit, alongside and wall hung wc to enhance the feeling of space. The products featured in this bathroom are from My Life, Rak, Roper Rhodes and Gemini. Thinking about a New Bathroom in 2020? We would love to hear from you! PLEA BY TRAGIC TOT PARENTS The grieving parents of a toddler who died after contracting sepsis have issued an appeal in the hope others will learn from the tragedy. Eliza Woods was just three months short of her third birthday when her life was cruelly cut short in December by the blood-poisoning illness. Now her mum and dad, Jodie and Mike, of Rhu, are campaigning to raise awareness of the killer condition.
ANY CHILD WHO: 1 2 3 4 5 6
Is breathing very fast Has a ‘fit’ or convulsion Looks mottled, bluish or pale Has a rash that does not fade when you press it Is very lethargic or difficult to wake Feels abnormally cold to touch

Call 999 and ask: could it be sepsis? The UK Sepsis Trust registered charity number (England & Wales) 1158843
They will be working with the UK Sepsis Trust and they have been supplying local businesses with cards detailing sepsis symptoms. Mike said: “Until 90 minutes before our daughter’s death, the only indication that anything was amiss was a fever that had started less than 48 hours before. “Sepsis is caused by the body over-reacting to an infection, any infection, and in the case of Eliza, her sepsis was triggered by Group A Streptococcus, one of the most common bacterial infections.”
Every year, sepsis affects 245,000 people in the UK with 1000 deaths each week. Mike said: “This is equivalent to a death every 12 minutes and accounts for more than breast, bowel and prostate cancer deaths combined. More worryingly the mortality rate among UK children is nearly twice that of elsewhere in Europe, largely due to the speed at which sepsis can overwhelm a child’s body.”
ANY CHILD UNDER 5 WHO: 1 2 3
Sepsis can be challenging to differentiate in the early stages from a normal “bug” yet there are a number of symptoms to look out for, including a fever, low temperature, breathing fast, fits, mottled skin, a rash that doesn’t fade, being lethargic or feeling cold to touch. Jodie and Mike also want to thank everyone who has supported them locally since the tragedy. Mike said: “The outpouring of community support has been incredible and we want to sincerely thank all of you who have supported us in our grief.”

A campaign group that hopes to bring new life to a disused historic building in Cove is calling out for expert support and advice. Save Craigrownie Church Hall campaign leader Susie Will reports that “momentum for the project has stalled”. But she believes that with the right help it should be possible to fulfil a bid to buy the building for community use. Susie, of Kilcreggan, is looking for a local person, or people, to bring knowledge and expertise to a bid for a community right to buy application. She said: “The campaign group has a committee and this has been very helpful so far with the campaign to save the hall but we’ve been unsuccessful in attempts for a community right to buy bid. I feel that if we could get the right advice from someone who is already experienced in these bids we might have more chance of success.” It was in 2018 that Susie, the founder of the Cove and Kilcreggan Youth Café, launched the campaign to save the former Church of Scotland building. Around a decade ago, the church

hall was sold to a developer but it has since remained empty. The goal is to buy the building and then raise the money to refurbish the hall to be used as a venue for the youth café, theatre and arts groups and events. In addition, the grounds would become home to sheltered housing in the shape of eco pods. Susie said: “I know many people who, like myself, would like to see the historic building brought back to life for the good of the

community. As well as a place to host events and groups – in addition to the burgh hall – we could also build new homes for elderly people. This is something we’re very short of in the area. “The community right to buy laws mean that we have a great opportunity to regain the hall for the community.” To offer help, contact Susie at kilcregsusie@hotmail.com. £200 RAISED IN CAT APPEAL Helensburgh & Lomond
Helensburgh’s most popular feline, George, has raised £200 so far for charity as part of an innovative Facebook campaign. Just a month into an ambitious appeal, George the Helensburgh Cat has added more than 200 new “likes” to his Facebook page. For every 100 likes, a local business will donate £100 between the two chosen charities, Cat’s Protection and the Dementia Resource Centre in Helensburgh. George’s total number of likes for the start of this appeal was 3,500
and, at the time of going to press, he had moved up to 3,741. The first £100 has been donated by your Community Advertiser, which is located in the town, the second £100 has been handed over by Helensburgh Floorplan. The company, located in East King Street, has been supplying high quality flooring to domestic and commercial customers for
more than 30 years. (See www. helensburghfloorplan.co.uk.) With a cap at 2,000 new likes, it’s hoped he will have reached 5,500 by the end of the year – and if George achieves his aim, he will have raised a fantastic £2,000 split between the two charities.
George first-footing at Helensburgh Subaru garage
PRESSURE WASHING
The much-loved cat-about-town has started off the new year in fine style, first-footing at Helensburgh’s Subaru garage to check out the deals and then making sure that plants in the town are being well looked after, as well as meeting and greeting his many fans.
If you want to help nudge George further towards his 5,500 total, all you need to do is like his Facebook page – George the Helensburgh Cat – and spread the word to get others to do the same. Only likes on Facebook will count, not follows on his Instagram page. And, if you’re a business (or an individual) that would like to get involved with this appeal, please email editor@ communityadvertiser.co.uk for details on how to take part. It costs just £100 for 100 likes. That is all it takes to make hundreds of lives better with these charities.

OPEN NIGHT AT NETBALL CLUB CALL OUT FOR TOKENS Helensburgh Netball Club (HNC) are one of only a few teams in Scotland to be awarded the coveted Gold Thistle Award, which is the top accolade for Scottish clubs. In 2019, HNC were chosen as Club of the Year in the inaugural LiveArgyll Sport Awards. The club was founded in January 2008 as a recreational club for women to get together to play netball, increase their fitness and meet new people.
Helensburgh Netball Club
Helensburgh Netball Club will host an open night this month in a bid to encourage new members. The Give Netball a Go event is on Monday February 24 from 6.30pm to 8pm at Lomond School sports hall Rhu Road Higher in Helensburgh. The benefits of playing netball include improved
health and wellbeing, as well as a chance to make new friends. The club is looking for players aged 14 and over and across levels of fitness. Members can play competitively or just for fun.
Player Emma said “On moving to the area I found recreational netball a great way to stay fit and meet new friends.” The club has two teams that regularly play in the Glasgow Netball Association League. The women meet every Monday, 6.30pm to 7.45pm for a recreational session. Carly, HNC Coach said, “As a player and head coach of this great club, I can honestly say their ethos and community spirt is second to none. You will not regret giving HNC a try!” See “Helensburgh Netballclub” on Facebook for more information.
A carers service is hoping that shoppers will help them to raise much-needed funds. Helensburgh and Lomond Young Carers Service is calling out for customers at Tesco in Sinclair Street and Tesco Express in East Clyde Street, both Helensburgh, to select their charity as part of a blue token scheme. Every three months, Tesco awards cash grants to groups with the most votes. All funds raised at the young carers service go towards social activities and short breaks for youngsters for improved health and wellbeing, while giving them a break from their caring role.
