Ride a vintage bus to two top treats Crafty co-ordination has ensured that the annual Summer Food and Craft Fair in the Victoria Hall is being held on the same day as Tea in the Park. On Saturday 21st May the Friends of the Victoria Hall and Friends of Hermitage Park present a double treat featuring a wide range of activities at the adjoining Sinclair Street venues. There will be the usual range of crafters inside the Victoria Hall who will be offering lots of different home made products - woodwork, jewellery, food from Argyll, silk and glass products, sewing, artwork - ideal for those summer gifts and personal treats.

china cups, delicious cakes and all the trimmings. In addition there will be live musical entertainment and activities including a bouncy castle, a fun family dog show, ponies, Airsoft shooting, hook the duck, children’s races, a sweetie

There will be pick up points throughout the town with the bus running every thirty minutes to give you a free ride to the hall where two more vintage buses will be on display.

stall and face painting. There will be a chance to build your own bird box, a plant stall, home baking and also a tombola and treasure hunt. Modern and vintage fire engines will be on display.

You can enjoy a trip down memory lane and lots of nostalgia as their current owners will be on hand to tell you all about their history and the regular services they provided in our local area.

Visitors can travel in style from the town to both events in vintage coaches from the Glasgow Vintage Vehicle Trust.

Following on from the success of last year’s event it is hoped that Tea in the Park will be an annual event, even during the refurbishment works due to start in September 2016 and complete in autumn 2018. The organisers of the events say: “ Put the date in your diary. Saturday 21st May, the Craft Fair is open from 9.30 am to 4pm, free admission as always. “The Friends of Hermitage Park afternoon of family fun in Hermitage Park runs from 12 noon to 4pm, so do hop on the bus and come to the place to be for a fun day out at the town’s two great venues. “

Tea in the Park will be opened by the Friends of Hermitage Park’s patron Jim McColl of Beechgrove Garden fame. The main event is Afternoon Tea served in a large marquee with Mobile Hairstylist

can become a Dementia Friend. It’s just about understanding a bit more about dementia and the small things you can do to help people with the condition. This could be helping someone find the right bus or being patient in a till queue if someone is taking longer to pay. Every action counts.

The organisers are also hoping we can learn a little bit about what it’s like to live with dementia and turn that understanding into action. Dementia Friends Scotland is part of a social action movement to increase awareness of dementia and to address the stigma experienced by many people living with the illness.

“If you can spare an hour, you can attend a face-toface information session. This will provide you with an understanding of how to interact with people who have dementia. It doesn’t have to be a huge commitment. A small change in what you do can make a big difference.”

Victoria Macleod at the Helensburgh Dementia Resource Centre says: “With the right support and understanding people can live well with dementia and still contribute to their own community. Anybody

Sub museum on course FOR SUMMER OPENING Now the Scottish Submarine Trust has been awarded a grant from the government (announced by The Chancellor George Osborne as part of the Budget) the charity says it can complete the opening of the Scottish Submarine Centre in Helensburgh by summer. The centrepiece submarine is due to arrive in the town at the beginning of May and will go straight into its place in the centre, located next to The Tower. With the grant of £670,000 through the Armed Forces Covenant Fund now available, plans have been made to complete the work that still needs to be done in order to get the centre ready including new floors and a heating system. If everything goes to plan it is hoped that the museum will be opened in the middle of August. The centre which is in a converted community hall will display a X51, a mini submarine that was

launched locally in 1952 and was subsequently used as a training vessel. Brian Keating, CEO of the Scottish Submarine Trust, said: “The arrival of the submarine will be a bit of a spectacle and when complete, we hope that the centre will attract thousands of people to Helensburgh.” Brian told us last year when the plans were announced : "We'll be explaining how submarines are built and telling the stories of heroes from both world wars and explaining the services' innovation and sacrifice," he said. "Faslane is 50 years old but there's not a single thing other than Faslane that says we have

anything to do with the Royal Navy. "Submarines are still the silent service, almost the secret service, because they're still doing the same kind of thing they did in the Cold War. I think this will open all of that up, plus we'll have a

The Trust were only informed that they were getting the money when the budget was announced, so it was a welcome surprise. The centre when finished aims to shine a light on the history of submarines and in particular their roles in the first and second World War. The trust hopes that the centre will attract in excess of 20,000 visitors who will see the sacrifice, innovation and dedication of those currently serving in the

It doesn’t seem like thirty years since the birth of Anne of Loudounville into a retail environment very different from that of today. In the beginning, and for a number of years, the shop was selling top of the range Belgian chocolates along with many world renowned quality chocolate brands. Customers were able to enjoy choosing their own favourite chocolates from the specially constructed glass chocolate cabinet and many will also remember with great affection our individual Belgian chocolate animals, a great favourite with the children. As times have changed, so to has Anne of Loudounville, selling a wide range of design led fine and costume jewellery, handbags, cashmere, chocolates and more. Who could forget the visit in 2009 of world renowned handbag designer Lulu Guinness with a queue extending round the square.

Wee crows NEW show Beer bus is rolling again

Performances of a new play 'Home fires, broken sons' by the Company is part of Argyll and Bute Council’s commitment to commemorating the centenary of the First World War. Three Wee Crows is one of Scotland's most innovative theatre companies. They have created a new piece of theatre. This exciting new work brings to life the towns and villages of the west of Scotland during WWI through theatre, music, dance, poetry and is interwoven with multi-media elements. The production tells tales drawn

from real events and highlights the stark contrast between domestic life and the horrors of the battle front. Two performances will take place at the Victoria Halls in Helensburgh as part of the Battle of Jutland commemorative weekend of events. The performances of this play will take place on Sunday 15th May 2016. The first performance will be at 2pm followed by a second performance at 5pm. Tickets to this unique and powerful piece are free. They can be obtained from Helensburgh Library (Tel. no. 01436 658833).

MAY 2016 - What's Up Doc?

Gorgeous gardens What's Up Doc? on show with Dr Nick Dunn There’s tons of treats in store for garden lovers this month. May is the month when West of Scotland gardens are at their most spectacular and some of the best are to be found locally. No fewer than fourteen private gardens on the Rosneath Peninsula will be open to the public for a unique one-off fundraiser in aid of Cancer Research UK. Stuckenduff Garden is also open. Stuckenduff House has a 3.5 acre garden overlooking the Gareloch with mature trees, rhododendrons, azaleas, mixed borders and a magical carpet of bluebells in May. Teas, Cake and Candy, Plant stall and live Classical Music will make for a delightful afternoon. There’s a guided walk at Glenarn Garden, Rhu. Learn about the plants, their history and where they came from with noted horticulturalists, Mike and Sue Thornley. High Glenan & Westburn High Glenan are also having open days. High Glenan is a secluded garden

with burn, gravel garden, herb and herbaceous borders, kitchen garden with fruit and vegetables. Homemade teas will be available. Westburn is a two acre woodland garden with bluebells in Springtime with some steep paths. Lawn surrounded by rhododendrons and azaleas also vegetable garden. Plants will be on sale at most venues. Times, contacts and further details are all in our What’s On section.

This month:

THE SHAPE OF THINGS TO COME…?

A recent report in England suggested that only a third of patients actually need to see a GP. This research by the “think tank” Reform suggested that most patients in England currently seeing a GP could either be seen by a nurse or pharmacist, or get help via technology such as video or online consultations. These radical ideas could upset some patients and doctors who are used to the traditional ways of general practice. However many practices, including my own, are already offering a more flexible service, with nurses now dealing with oneoff illnesses which would

previously have required a GP, such as skin problems, sore throats, coughs and other infections, as well as managing diabetes, asthma and blood pressure. In reality most patients are happy to be seen by the best person to help them, and are less concerned whether this is a nurse, doctor or other professional. It can often give greater flexibility with appointments, easier to fit into peoples’ busy schedules. In the future, we may even see health data from “wearable technologies” such as fitbits or smart watches helping doctors give advice to patients online. However, I am hoping to avoid being replaced by a robot, just yet!

Helensburgh all set to Go gospel

A new committee has already made an energetic start on organising the Rhu Gala. This year it has a new home at the elegant Royal Northern and Clyde Yacht Club.

Louis Stedman-Bryce, former singer with a Brighton Gospel Choir is bringing the Gospel experience to Helensburgh.

The gala is being held this year on the 11th June. New Chairman Malcolm Pearson is joined by secretary/vice chairman Gordon Black plus Jonathan Trayte, Rachel Thomson, Kim McCallion and Douglas Black and former committee member, Richard Morgan as treasurer.

Louis, who recently moved to the town tells us: “ Singing in a Gospel Choir is a uniquely uplifting experience and is a great way to meet new people and bring the community together. “No matter your age or background, from students to retirees, everyone is welcome. The Choir will be non-religious (all religions and none) and is open to anyone with a passion for singing, no matter your singing ability. “This project is at an early stage and I am looking for interested people to get in touch to support the Choir’s development. We need singers, volunteers to help with planning and anyone with a passion for Gospel Music. If we get enough interest we will run

up to two Gospel workshops a year, culminating in an unforgettable community performance. Anyone interested in bringing Gospel to Helensburgh should email HGGchoir@gmail.com for more information.

Gordon said: “The usual attractions such as the parade, dog show, crockery smash and beat the goalie, burger stall and beer tent will all be back. We also have access to the Royal Northern, with the tea tent moving inside. Boat trips will be run off the pier. It's set to be another fun, affordable family day out, with no entry fee. We hope for as big a turnout as ever with this new venue If anyone is interested in volunteering on or around the day, please contact rhugala@outlook.com

Better now It’s at this time of the year, when the sun comes out, that you suddenly notice all the bits and pieces that need to be done to your home and garden. You can rest assured it’s the same for everyone because in Scotland the winter weather does not create an attractive – or agreeable – environment for maintaining your property. Now, however, with the warmer weather, longer days and the chance of drier conditions, it’s important to get on top of that list of things to do.

Start by taking a critical eye over the inside and outside of your house. Look for leaks, cracks, rough paintwork, drainage issues and general wear and tear. Take a note of any jobs that require a professional and another list of those that you can tackle yourself. It’s worth considering how much

time it would take you to do a job compared to a trusted expert, who will be skilled in the task and also have the right tools. While it can seem like a big outlay to get the experts in, in fact it is likely to save your own precious time and give a far better and long-lasting finish. Projects that are ideal for the summer months include decorating inside and outside. While some people enjoy decorating for a better finish and improved safety – for example where walls are double height or the outside of a two-storey home

than Never... – it’s worth calling in professional decorators.

After a winter of bad weather, your roof should be checked over. Re-roofing or roofing repairs are best done when drier weather is more likely. Gutters should also be cleared of leaves and you should pay attention to any places where water outflows, or goes into a drain, to ensure there are no leaks. Cold and icy weather can lead to cracks in gutters and pipes, especially if they are not the modern plastic style.

The outside of a home needs to be maintained to ensure it keeps out the wind and rain. If in doubt, ask a builder or plastering company to take a look at your property. When enquiring about work to your home make sure you seek at least two or three quotes for any suggested work. You can ask friends and family for recommendations, too.

Your garden will also require attention. Winter plays havoc with trees and plants and the grass will need to be cut regularly.

You could enlist the regular help of a gardener. To make your garden easier to manage or more attractive, why not consult a landscaping company? They will know all the tips and tricks for creating a beautiful outdoors space that is easier to look after.

If you ensure that your home, inside and out, and garden are well-maintained you will enjoy them in the longer term without need for costlier emergency repairs and professional assistance.

There’s a chance to visit the blacksmith’s forge to discover how blades and bows were made, and to learn how fashions evolved - and also how the castle has been maintained over the years. The show runs from noon till 4pm. For full details see www.historicscotland.gov.uk/events/event_ detail.htm?eventid=34740

income may result in funding being made available but with a contribution also payable by you. There are certain state benefits which will automatically qualify the applicant for Legal Aid. According to SLAB, 75% of Scottish adults would qualify for civil legal aid. It may be that this would be with a contribution. However, that contribution is usually paid by way of monthly instalments and ensures that access to legal advice is affordable to those who require it. We would advise that it is always worth asking your solicitor for further advice regarding your own particular set of circumstances and whether you would qualify for Legal Aid.

Big Bowling bargain on offer If you’ve ever fancied trying the fascinating sport of bowling, Colgrain Bowling Club is offering a bargain chance to give it a go for the price of £45 (usually £185) for a year's membership. The offer is for a limited time and application forms can be obtained from the Club or by contacting the bar staff during opening hours. Past President David Petrie said...

"We would like to encourage those who want to try out a new sport but do not want to commit to a big expense upfront... This lets people give it a go and see if it is for them. The club wishes to welcome and promote as many new members as it can.”

The club has an interesting history. During the mid -1940s just after the war, certain members of the Hermitage Bowling Club were dissatisfied with the conditions laid down by the then Helensburgh Town Council limiting playing time and the lack of a clubhouse where they could meet in the closed season. They agreed to try and establish a new club, with better facilities. To help finance its creation they ran a weekly football sweep under the name of Hermitage Building Fund, which became locally known as the "railway sweep" due to rail workers who organised it.

and a special meeting, held in the Grant restaurant on Friday the 6th August 1948, agreed to purchase the ground. Since then, the club members have done an enormous amount of work to add and improve the facilities.

Household Tips COFFEE & TOOTHPASTE When your morning cuppa or coffee break leaves a stubborn unsightly ring behind on your mug, use a little toothpaste to clean it off. Apply it, leave it and then scrub it off. Stains gone.

Keep on Runnin' with Laura Johnstone This month: SURVIVING RACE DAY You’ve trained hard and don’t want any setbacks on race day. Here are tips to make your race go smoothly. 1. HYDRATE AND FUEL Hydration is important throughout the whole day. Keeping your water levels topped up throughout the day is far more effective than guzzling down a bottle of water on the start line. Plan your food for the day, taking into consideration your race start time. Give your body the fuel it needs- slow release carbohydrates and protein. Porridge, eggs, bagels, dates, flapjacks….are all runners’ favourite pre race munches. 2. ARRIVE EARLY Give yourself time to find the changing, toilets, get your number on, warm up etc and most importantly to chat to other runners and enjoy the atmosphere. Have a layer to

keep warm while on the start line, foil blankets are ideal in colder weather. 3. PACE Don’t get caught up in the moment and fly off at too quick a pace. Run at the same pace you have trained at. Don’t worry about “all” those runners you think are passing you. You will be seeing a lot of them again! If in doubt start slow and finish strong. Run your own race. Use a pacing band (or write on your hand!) to remind yourself of the times you want to arrive at each km. 4. ENJOY! Take time to enjoy the moment. You’ve trained hard and deserve the pride. Even if you haven’t brought family or friends, there will be plenty of spectators who have come out to support all the runners. Give them a smile and a wave, it feels good! 5. REST Go home, rest, recover and plan your next race!

Are you stressed?

Marion Brown Human Givens Psychotherapist is here to help Working with Stress Local practitioner Marion Brown has specialised in working with stress – and has found the Human Givens approach (hgi.org.uk) to be enormously helpful – for herself and in working with others. As human beings we have not changed too much over many thousands of years. Our human LIFESTYLES have however changed a great deal. In just the last 200 years we have developed electric light, motorised transport, aeroplanes, radio, TV, telephones, internet, mobile phones, superfast communications and ever smarter technology.

32

We have changed our diets to more refined foods, generally take less exercise, and sleep less - and all these factors can have an influence on how we function, physically and psychologically. Sometimes our modern 24hr lives can become too overwhelming and apparently common everyday life situations such as: family and/or school and college pressures; relationship difficulties; money problems; job insecurities; work issues; retirement; bereavement; and so on … can all too easily build up to become ‘too much’ for us resulting in us feeling anxious, panicky, weepy, irritable, depressed, not

sleeping well and unable to cope. We can think of these disabling feelings (or ‘emotional arousal’) as our normal human ‘alarm’ systems warning us that we ‘can’t go on like this’ – we are too stressed! and need something to change. When we are experiencing such feelings it is very hard for us to make sense of what is going on and to feel able to do something about it. The Human Givens approach offers common sense explanations to help us to understand what is happening to us and practical tips for what we can do about it – starting right away.

To advertise, call Charlotte or Debbie now on 01436 672424

Marion offers confidential individual appointments in Helensburgh. She also runs group workshops to enable more people to learn about, and experience the application of, this common sense approach. The next open access group workshop ‘Working with Stress’ is scheduled for 26 May,10am-3pm in Helensburgh. Get in touch with Marion to see how she can help.

NEW ACTION SPORTS store Comes to Clydebank At Scotland’s biggest action sports store, Librance, which has newly opened in Clydebank, teenager Jenny Atkinson has her first try of a Hoverboard. Already a Swegway fan, the 14-year-old from Helensburgh has heard great things about the one-wheeled Hoverboards and persuaded her mum to take her to the large showroom. Jenny is impressed by the store and also the Hoverboard. She says: “There is so much to see and try in Librance, including the Hoverboard, and also Swegways, skateboards, stunt scooters and Heelys.

FUN SPORTS: Jenny Atkinson tries one of the new hoverboards in stock at Librance in Clydebank

Jenny enjoyed her trial of the Hoverboard, which is like a onewheeled Swegway and the latest must-have action sports gadget.

“I really like the cool lay-out of the shop, too, and the amount of floor space. I felt like the staff were friendly and relaxed yet they know lots about their products.”

She says: “The Hoverboard was quite tricky to do at the start but

TO LET Beechwood Estate

felt brilliant once I got the hang of it. I like my Swegway and now I’d really like a Hoverboard to go out on with friends in the summer.” Mum Debbie, who reminds Jenny she’ll need to save up for her own Hoverboard, said she felt reassured by Librance about the safety of the products. She says: “I was worried about the likes of Swegways and Hoverboards but I felt like the staff put safety first. “They told me that their products had all passed stringent tests – more so than others on the market – and this gave me confidence about letting Jenny use them.” Librance is the partner store of another in Edinburgh. It has recently moved from Xscape Braehead to Unit 14, Clydebank Business Park in South Avenue. It’s open from 10am to 6pm daily. They sell brands such as Evolution, Speedstar, Arbor, Penny, Sacrifice, MGP and many more. See www.librance.com or pop in to find out more.

 L e D. Halligan Landscape & General Builders have over 30 years experience in the building industry and we are focussed on providing top quality extensions and garages for you. So get in contact today to see how we can help and we’d be more than happy to speak to you...

Thinking of extending your home?

We recently had an extesnion and internal restructure done by D. Halligan and we are so pleased with the results. It’s even better than we imagined. Danny is fairly priced and you will not find a builder who will work harder for you. I felt at ease the whole build knowing we had chosen someone so trustworthy. I cannot recommend him more highly. we would certainly use his services again.
