PURR-FECT WAY TO RAISE FUNDS Helensburgh’s celebrity cat is teaming up with the Community Advertiser in 2020 to help raise funds for two poignant charities. to rescuing and rehoming stray, unwanted or homeless cats and educating people about cats and cat welfare.

George the Helensburgh Cat

George is hoping that local businesses and individuals, as well as his social media followers, will get behind his bid to donate thousands of pounds to the Dementia Resource Centre in Helensburgh, which is run by Alzheimer Scotland, and Cats Protection. After being abandoned as a youngster, George was given shelter by Cats Protection in Paisley before his Helensburgh owners Elizabeth and Dennis Royal adopted him. Now George would like to give back to the charity that rescued him. Cats Protection is dedicated Mobile Hairstylist

Kerry

George is also aware that Dennis lives with dementia. Jackie Hood, the daughter of Elizabeth and Dennis, said: “Dad suffers from dementia, but he and George get along well and, it’s great to see.” The town’s Dementia Resource Centre, which provides support to sufferers, their families and carers, has been chosen as the other worthy recipient. Throughout the coming months, readers of the Community Advertiser can help to support this special charity campaign. All you need to do is “like” George’s Facebook page. See “George the Helensburgh cat” on Facebook. For every 100 new likes that George receives, a business or individual will donate £100 to the George-o-Meter.

IT’S OTTERLY FABULOUS! Villagers along the Rosneath Peninsula have been delighted to report more frequent sightings of otters around their shores. Although Scotland is a European stronghold for otters, the mammals are shy and seeing one of the solitary, semiaquatic creatures is considered a treat. It is also relatively unusual for sea otters to live in such close proximity to busy places, such as the centre of a village. Excitingly, however, a number of otters have been reported as living in both the Gareloch, at Kilcreggan and Portkil, and in Loch Long – and they’ve been getting quite bold, too. Recently, an otter was living and fishing in the vicinity of Kilcreggan Pier, where the piermaster filmed

it on a number of occasions. It has even used the ferry landing platform for a bit of a rest, prompting a ferry skipper to also snap the animal. And in the Gareloch, a rather cheeky otter has been using a boat as a look-out post and posing on the bow .

“We live right in the middle of the village beside the water and I’m always keeping an eye open for wildlife. We have been really lucky to watch these animals. “I’ve seen the kingfisher a few times and they are very small and rapid. I learnt when it would turn up and eventually I got a good picture of it.

In addition to the otters, other rarer species have been seen locally, including kingfishers and red squirrels. Keen photographer and wildlife watcher Robin Flannagan, of Clynder, has spotted otters and kingfishers from his home close to the loch. He said:

Call us today for your free no-obligation quote

“A couple of months ago my eight-year-old daughter Abigail and I were on our paddle board on the water and I saw it again. “The otter has been seen by quite a few people and it’s obviously happy here. Sea otters, which are the same as river otters, don’t generally have to roam as far for food. We all love seeing the wildlife.” To find our ore about otters see the SNH website, www.nature.scot.

TAKE A CHILLY DIP The Helensburgh Dorian Choir would like to encourage new members to come along to this month’s rehearsal. The first session of 2020 takes place on Tuesday January 7 at 7.15pm at the town’s United Reformed Church. The historic choir performs two concerts each year and they will now be practising for the Spring Concert, which takes place in May. The existing members of the choir, established in 1949, are also reminded that this is the first rehearsal of the year.

If you want a refreshing change for 2020, how about kicking it off with the traditional dip in the Gareloch? Almost 100 years old, Helensburgh’s New Year Swim takes place at Rhu Marina on New Year’s Day from noon.

Participants can spend as long in the water as they like, although most choose to make their frosty immersion as short as possible.

More than 120 took to the chilly waters last year and RNLI organisers are expecting similar numbers this time.

One of the organisers, Keith Shipman, said that Rhu Marina has requested that children under the age of eight will not be given access to the pontoons and, therefore, cannot participate.

The town’s lifeboat crew will be on hand to ensure the event passes safely. As well as getting the bragging rights to say you’ve done the chilly swim, all participants will be rewarded with a certificate and a hot cup of soup afterwards.

See www.helensburgh-dorianchoir.uk for more information or email: tschooling56@gmail. com.

New Year Swim 2019

Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. It is free to take part, but watch out for RNLI fundraisers mingling in the crowd with buckets to raise money for the local lifeboat.

Helensburgh Burns Club's supper last year

Scotland’s famous bard, Robert “Rabbie” Burns, is honoured with a series of traditional events across the local communities. Although most frequently associated with Ayrshire and Dumfries & Galloway, the poet (1759 to 1796) is also known to have visited the Lomond area. After staying in Inveraray in June 1787, Burns travelled south to Arrochar, before moving on to Bannachra House, close to Glen Fruin off the Black Hill above Helensburgh. The next day he was made a Freeman of Dumbarton. From Burns’ letters, he enjoyed some all-night hospitality with songs, women and whisky at Bannachra, before toasting the

sunrise above Ben Lomond. He and his friends then spent the day on Loch Lomond, before heading to Dumbarton. Still apparently rather tipsy, Burns on his mare Jenny Geddes raced an unnamed Highlandman and his trusty steed – in Burns’ words, the latter’s horse, ‘threw his rider…in a clipt hedge, and down came Jenny Geddes all over…’.

The Helensburgh Burns Club holds one of the largest local Burns Suppers. This year it will take place at the Masonic Hall in Helensburgh on January 11. The evening will feature the club’s president Graham Hill proposing the Immortal Memory, before Bridgeton Burns Club’s Iain Gordon delivers the toast to the lassies and actress Yvonne Waring replies. Contact: secretary@ helensburghburnsclub.com. Elsewhere, Burns’ Suppers take place at Helensburgh Sailing Club on January 31, while Cove Sailing Club hosts the traditional event on January 24. Cardross’ Burns Supper is on February 7 at Geilston Hall.

Burns came off with a few cuts and bruises and went on to collect his Dumbarton honour. He finishes the letter saying, ‘I have yet fixed on nothing with respect to the serious business of life. I am, just as

SCALING HEIGHTS FOR A CHARITY IT’S CAPTAIN you are contemplating the dreich Scottish GRITTER PANTS! IfJanuary weather and dreaming of a new challenge to lift your spirits the SSPCA may just have the answer.

A local schoolboy has named one of Argyll & Bute Council’s new winter vehicles as part of a competition. Thomas Meikle, of Colgrain Primary School in Helensburgh, suggested Captain Gritter Pants for one of the gritters. His imaginative name was one of four chosen by the council after taking delivery of a fleet of winter maintenance vehicles.

Starting next month the animals charity (which runs an invaluable local rescue and rehoming centre) is running a new season of its popular – and very useful – sponsored climbs of Mount Kilimanjaro. The trip is regularly described as the adventure of a lifetime but is no picnic, and many who sign up for the challenge

get plenty of training on our draughty Scottish hills before heading for the long, long hike to the most famous mountain in Africa. Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest freestanding mountain in the world and the breathtaking views from its summit will be the reward for pushing your limits both physically and mentally. Each step taken will help raise funds for abused, abandoned

and injured animals throughout Scotland and the memories of this experience are sure to stay with you forever. The organisers say they will do everything they can to help you reach your fundraising target, and you'll also receive your very own Scottish SPCA t-shirt to wear during the trek so everyone knows who you are raising valuable funds for. What you can expect is the proverbial gruelling slog, but with the bonus of the kind of views you won’t find up Ben Nevis or anywhere similar – and the comradeship of like-minded souls involved in the effort. The first dates for 2020 are February 7 to 16, but most will find that too tight a timescale to contemplate in January – but that doesn’t matter as there are also further opportunities on August 28 to September 6.

The others were Grittersaurus, by Southend Primary School, Mid Argyll; Vanilla Ice, by Emily Hutchins, of Strachur Primary, Bute and Cowal; and Gritny Spears, by Ayla Purfit, of Salen Primary, Oban.

For further information or to book this challenge, contact the fundraising team on 03000 999 999 (option 4) or visit www.discoveradventure.com/ challenges/mount-kilimanjarotrek#/dates-prices.

Entrants will receive a certificate and the winning names will be put on plaques on the local vehicles.

OLD FIRM LEGENDS HAVE A FEAST Old Firm legends dined together at a Helensburgh restaurant - ahead of their team’s cup final clash.

Tenor James Gilchrist and pianist Anna Tilbrook

DUO TO PLAY ANNIVERSARY CONCERT The Helensburgh Music Society 40th anniversary concert season continues this month with tenor James Gilchrist and pianist Anna Tilbrook on stage. Former Ranger’s manager Walter Smith and Celtic’s former assistant manager Murdo MacLeod tucked into steak and seafood at a charity bash on Friday hosted by Cattle & Creel. Six diners had successfully bid for their place on the VIP table at a fundraising auction held by Ardencaple Football Club earlier this year. Restaurant owners Cara and Milan Nikolic, whose twin sons play for the club, donated the prize which also saw Club Chairman Craig Holborn and sponsor Milan join the table. Helensburgh businesses who donated generously to bag the auction prize included estate and letting agents Caledonia

Property, M & T Builders Merchants and children’s clothing shop Eden Helensburgh. Former Rangers & Scotland manager Walter is President of Ardencaple FC while TV and radio sports pundit and ex Celtic & Scotland player Murdo is an Ambassador for the club.

The event takes place on Saturday January 18 at 7.30pm at the Tower Digital Arts Centre in Helensburgh.

Chairman Craig Holborn thanked Walter and Murdo for giving up ‘yet more of their personal time’ to support the Club. He added” Thanks also to the winning bidders for securing their places at the table by pledging muchwelcomed financial support. And to Cattle & Creel for hosting “On behalf of our Club I cannot thank Cara & Milan enough.

James and Anna have attracted international acclaim for their recordings of English song and the song cycles of Schubert and Schumann.

ROOFING AND BUILDING CONTRACTORS HELENSBURGH

The programme in this, the third concert of the special season, features music by Vaughan Williams, Dove and Schumann’s Diechterliebe.

James has sung in most of the major concert halls around the world and Anna’s career has seen her collaborating with artists such as José Carreras, Angela Gheorghui and Bryn Terfel.

Alan Maclean, from the music society, said: “We are delighted that the duo managed to fit Helensburgh into their busy concert schedules.” Helensburgh Music Society was founded by a small group of music enthusiasts and continues to be run by a small volunteer committee. Over the years, some 185 performances have taken place. Tickets for this month’s concert cost £12, £5 (students), £1 (under 18s) and can be purchased at the venue in advance, by telephone on 01436 645006 or on the door from 6.45pm. Cove & Kilcreggan Literary Society, which was founded in 1947, meets on Mondays at 7.30pm at Cove Burgh Hall for expert talks on social, scientific and cultural subjects.

The first talk of the year is on Monday January 6 with Neil Isaacs, from the University of Glasgow, providing a first-hand account of groundbreaking work on protein structures. Entitled, Crystallography and the Structures of Proteins, Neil will reveal how X-rays have not only been used for medical imaging but have also opened up the knowledge of the structures of materials. The following Monday, January 13, and in contrast, Alistair Cameron’s talk, Water of Life, will cover the history and the future for the national drink of Scotland. Aqua vitae was first recorded

He will look back on aspects of Israel and Jerusalem from 1917 when General Allenby captured the city from the Turks, to the present day. Completing the month’s talks on January 27 is The Sakhalin Adventure by Wells Grogan, which describes his visit to the Russian Far East and to its largest island. The society’s meetings continue until March 2 and the final session for the 2019/2020 season is the AGM and Quiz on March 9. President Alan Richardson said: “Members and non-members alike are very welcome at our talks on many different subjects.”

OPEN DAY AT BURGH HALL NEW YEAR, An historic building is hosting an Open Doors event this month to reveal the details and achievements of a recent restoration project. Cove Burgh Hall, located on Shore Road, had been the focus of £207,000 works to the outside stone and mortar façade. The public is invited for an informal guided tour on Saturday January 11, between noon and 4pm. Despite the work, the communityowned hall remained open and only the library and small hall needed to be closed for the sixmonth project. Cove Burgh Hall has long been an important focal point for local people and is run entirely by volunteers. It was built in the 1890s by Victorian merchants and gifted to the villages of Cove and Kilcreggan in 1893. The B-listed hall is built in a Scottish baronial style. The hall is used by 25 community groups and hosts a variety of public and private events.

The project was completed thanks to funds raised by community events and a range of grants from organisations, including Argyll and Islands LEADER Programme, Historic Environment Scotland, Robertson Trust and the Trusthouse Charitable Foundation.

NEW READS

With Cove Burgh Hall now fully reopened, Cove and Kilcreggan Library, which closed during the works, is also back in full swing. The library is communityowned and run by Rosneath Peninsula Amenity Society. Cove Burgh Hall has fully re-opened after restoration

Graham Bell, the fundraising coordinator, said: “We want to give a special thanks to everyone that supported us. Without them this work would never have happened. “Special thanks should also go to the main contractor, Matheson, for being accommodating in facilitating the uninterrupted continuation of activities while work was on-going. “The critical work to safeguard the hall for generations to come has been done.”

However, there is more work still to come. Graham continued: “The aim is to continue to look after the heritage of the building – not as a monument but as a vibrant hub of community life. We need to spend more to ensure the hall is accessible, practical and comfortable for everyone and for a wider range of uses.” Income from events, hires and friends of Cove Burgh Hall pay for the running costs. See www.coveburghhall.uk.

Physical inactivity is the greatest public health challenge facing the Western world. A British Medical Journal editorial recently argued that doctors should be more active in trying to address any limiting factors to exercise. One such condition is plantar fasciitis. Plantar fascia is a band of connective tissue connecting the heel to the small bones near the toes. Repeated “microtrauma” caused by pulling of the fascia from the base of the heel causes pain from the heel to the sole, limiting walking or running. It tends to affect people as they get older, but people who work on flat surfaces are more

commonly affected. It is easy to diagnose, with localised tenderness on the base of the heel. For the most part, doctors often reassure patients, as it will often settle after 12-18 months. However there are some treatments thought to help. These include biomechanical measures such as splints or shoe modifications by Podiatrists, steroid injections, shock wave treatment and occasionally surgery. Unfortunately none of these treatments are especially successful, but even if they help a little, we are encouraged to consider them. So don’t let foot pain stop you exercising – try to get it sorted and put your best foot forward!

NEW YEAR Just like every other January, many of us will make a New Year’s resolution, or two. But while research shows that in the first few weeks, more than three-quarters of us will stick to the pledges, within a couple of months most will then give up.

Fortunately, there are many triedand-tested tips for success with your New Year’s resolutions in 2020.

LET’S TALK ABOUT BOWEL CANCER

Legal Matters with Gill Bowman BA LLB from Cairns Brown Solicitors

A charity is visiting Rhu this month to give a potentially life-saving talk about bowel cancer awareness. Bowel Cancer UK will be at Rhu Hall on Thursday January 30 from 7pm and the presentation will last for 30 minutes.

SEASON This month: PARTY & DRINK DRIVING

A potentially life-saving talk about bowel cancer awareness

Bowel cancer is the third most common cancer in Scotland and the second biggest cancer killer. Almost 3800 people in Scotland are diagnosed with bowel cancer each year and approximately 1700 people die from the disease.

bowel cancer through to the risk factors.

However, it doesn’t have to be this way because bowel cancer is treatable and curable, especially when caught early.

The National Bowel Screening Programme, offered in Scotland for those who are aged between 50 and 74, will also be highlighted.

If diagnosed at the earliest stage, nine out of 10 of people will survive bowel cancer. This is why Bowel Cancer UK is keen to raise awareness of the disease.

Free informational materials will also be available and the speaker will be happy to answer any questions that members of the audience might have.

The talk covers a range of topics, from the signs and symptoms of

'Tis the season to be jolly; also for parties and generally being merry. Unfortunately, this can also mean there is an increase in the number of drink driving cases processed through the courts. In 2014 the legal alcohol limit was reduced from 80mg in every 100ml of blood to 50mg. In practical terms, the amount of alcohol that can be consumed before an individual would be over the legal limit depends on a number of factor, including the person’s gender, current weight, height and even their mental state. The average man would be over the limit on less than a pint of beer and the average

female on around half a pint. It takes around one hour for the body to process a unit of alcohol. The consequences of this are that, depending on the number of drinks you have had, you may still be unfit to drive the next morning. This is often underestimated and where many people find themselves driving illegally. The minimum sentence for driving whilst under the influence of alcohol is a driving ban of at least one year. However, it would be open to the court to also impose an unlimited fine or even a prison sentence. Enjoy the season and make alternative transport arrangments.

START YOUR HEALTHIER 2020 Don’t miss your chance to find out more about a healthier lifestyle at a well-being event this month.

SOCIETY EXPLORES RUSSIAN ART Helensburgh & Lomond Health and Wellbeing Network is hosting the Living Well Fest 2020 on Saturday January 11, from noon to 3pm, at Helensburgh Parish Church. The festival will offer the opportunity to find out more about a wide range of activities in the local area and offer the chance to try yoga, massage and tai chi, among others. Audrey Baird, coordinator of the Helensburgh & Lomond Health and Wellbeing Network, said: “The Living Well Fest is free and it’s the ideal event for anyone who is thinking about making a change to improve their well-being.

“There will be plenty of information and inspiration about how people of all ages can enjoy a healthier life.” The festival will showcase practical steps to being healthier, especially self-help methods.

The New Year opens for The Art Society Lomond and Argyll (TASLA) with a lecture entitled New Art for A New Society: Propaganda and Russian Art. Taking place at the Victoria Halls on January 14 at 10.30am, this event is delivered by Natalia Murray from London’s Courtauld Institute.

Audrey said: “Too often, people are too busy thinking about others, but if we don't look after ourselves, our own health can suffer. Many discover that getting fitter can be a fun, rewarding and sociable thing to do.”

An associate lecturer and senior curator at the world-famous institution, Natalia will investigate the first expressions of proletarian art, sculpture and slogans to ask whether art was a useful part of the revolution, or whether the revolution promoted art.

Helensburgh and Lomond Health and Wellbeing Network have helped to fund the event. www. healthyargyllandbute.co.uk.

TASLA also plan to hold a study day on March 4, which is open to everyone. It will be led by

internationally renowned lecturer, singer and musician Peter Medhurst. Entitled The Romantic Spirit: A Study Day on Music and the Arts from c1788-1848, the six main topics to be discussed during the course of the day are warfare between 1789 and 1848, the impact of the Napoleonic wars on the arts, the subjective in Romantic expression, the importance of nature, the supernatural and the Gothic and the rise of nationalism. See www.tasla.org.uk to find out about costs.

DAVE IS BACK ON HOME TURF Lomondside alt.blues troubadour Dave Arcari returns to home territory to play his first show of 2020 at Buchanan Memorial Hall in Milton of Buchanan on Saturday, February 1 (8pm to 11pm). The show is at the venue where Arcari recorded his Live at Memorial Hall album, and will also serve as the local debut of the Dave Arcari signature model guitar from California-based National Reso-Phonic Guitars. This signature guitar, which means a great deal to this fartravelled artiste, was launched at the start of Dave’s summer tour of the USA, and was the fruition of a project which began a year ago.

That was when Arcari made his California debut demonstrating instruments on National ResoPhonic’s booth at the NAMM (National Association of Music Merchants) Show in Anaheim – as well as performing a string of dates in and around Los Angeles. Dave said: “It was exciting to be pulling together the dream guitar, and to do so with a company synonymous with blues music and the development of resonator guitars is both an honour and a privilege.” Arcari has been playing National Reso-Phonic guitars professionally for more than 20 years and has a long-standing relationship with the company. “When I first started playing these guitars in the 1990s I never

dreamt our relationship would evolve into what it is today.” His latest release, Brexit Blues, is “an observation of the current political climate in the UK and abroad” which is available to stream and download via Spotify, Apple Music and all digital services. Dave has recently been taken onboard by Reunion Blues Gig Bags as an official artist, a partnership which sees the premium instrument case manufacturer join his list of endorsers alongside National Reso-Phonic Guitars, Newtone Strings, G7th Capos and Diamond Bottlenecks. ALL INVITED TO ‘COME AND TRY SESSIONS' G84 Junior Netball Club is inviting all budding netballers whatever their ability to two free ‘come and try sessions’.

PUPILS CONDUCT AIR TESTS

Pupils at a Helensburgh school took part in a project to test air pollution levels in nearby streets.

G84 is a dynamic club, established 10 years ago to promote netball to children from Primary 1 upwards and for several years has achieved sporting excellence with its U15s and U17s age group in the Glasgow League. Named Sports Club of the Year for Argyll and Bute in 2017 the club has been through a transitional period in 2019 but now has a new committee and coaching team in place. Headed up by Evelyn Cormack and supported by a strong team of Level 1 netball and Level 3 performance coaches, the club offers skills development, strength & conditioning, fitness

and game play each week. The club coaches are passionate about using netball to promote health and wellbeing, make new friendships and have fun but if players want to stretch themselves there are also lots of opportunities for members to play competitive matches within the Glasgow Netball League. Being part of a team encourages a positive mental attitude and G84 is very proud that several members have taken their sport

to the next level including Rebecca Edgar (Scotland International); Lia McGrath (Scotland U17 Long Squad); Lucy Wilson (Netball Scotland’s National Academy programme), and Ann Young (Scotland Women’s Rugby). Whether you are just starting out as a Nipper or playing in a team, G84 guarantee you will enjoy their sessions. Contact G84secretary@gmail.com for details.

The Lomond School children were pleased to discover that the surrounding air contains low levels of nitrogen dioxide. The investigation was carried out as part of UNICEF’s OutRight campaign, a youth initiative that raises awareness of the UN Rights of the Child. The pupils aged eight and nine also made a list of ideas to further reduce pollution in the area, from walking rather than driving to creating more green spaces. The UNICEF campaign revealed that a third of children in Britain are living in areas that have unsafe levels of air pollution.
