VISION GROUP SEEKS YOUR OPINIONS AND PHOTOS Helensburgh’s Community Council wants to create a new “Vision for Helensburgh” based firmly on where the community itself thinks the town should be heading.

They also want people to photograph their own impressions of the community for an exhibition in Autumn which will also showcase the emerging proposals from the exercise. The process is being conducted by a small group of volunteers guided by community council member Norman McNally, a long time resident.

He tells the CA: “It’s now sixteen years since the Helensburgh Study Group published their review “Helensburgh – A Town For The Future”. Only sixteen years, but completely different administrative, political and economic contexts exist both in the wider environment and within our town. “It would be helpful now to discover just what sort of town we think we are and where the community feels we ought to be heading.” The group will build on Argyll and Bute Council’s recently published research document ‘Helensburgh Making Places’

The Young Firefighters meet one night per week at the town’s fire station and in addition to firefighting skills Young Firefighters help young people to develop various skills, including teamwork, problem solving, leadership and communication preparing young people for adult life. Morna Macgregor Mcpartland who volunteers with the group tells us: “We teach 13-18 year olds life and fire fighting skills, it’s great team building. They get full fire gear and uniform and the group is free.” The Helensburgh unit was established at the town's fire station a couple of years ago after a successful appeal for the funding needed to get it off the ground. The volunteers who run it emphasise: “This is not about training kids to be firefighters. This is about teaching young people important life skills. The basis of the unit is Fire Service

driven, but we look to get lots of different professionals in to speak to the young people in the unit, such as prospective employers, other uniformed services and others who can show them useful skills.” The Helensburgh group has also drawn on the successes of other Young Firefighter units elsewhere – most notably in Dumbarton, where a very successful group has been running for the last 17 years.

New members can expect to receive a free dress uniform and personal protective equipment before being given a demonstration on basic CPR life-saving techniques with the help of 'Resusci-Annie', the dummy who'll be familiar to anyone who's ever undergone resuscitation training. They're also trained in the right roll-call techniques and receive an introduction to one of the most vital pieces of equipment for any firefighter – the fire hose.

POLICE YOUTH GROUP IS UP AND RUNNING The Police Scotland Youth Volunteer (PSYV) programme is now up and running in Helensburgh, headed up by youth engagement officer PC Steven Carr. Steven took over from Craig Stamp, who was awarded the accolade of Police Scotland’s Officer of the Year for his youth work. Craig left the Helensburgh force last year for a new post closer to his home. Twenty four young volunteers had their passing out parade recently and there is a waiting list already in place. The group is based at Hermitage Academy. The pupils are mostly from Hermitage with a couple from Lomond School. The PSYV in their distinctive grey uniforms will be on hand at the Highland Games as well as to doing offence prevention leaflet drops. They may also be involved in Operation Ironworks, a successful joint operation to reduce antisocial and irresponsible behaviour in Scotland’s first National Park. Now in its eleventh year, Operation Ironworks brings

together Police Scotland, Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park Authority and Forest Enterprise Scotland to work together to ensure everyone can enjoy a safe summer in what is one of Scotland’s most spectacular areas. Since it began the partnership has successfully reduced issues of anti-social behaviour from littering, drunken disorder, vandalism and petty theft through to more serious criminal behaviour such as violence and irresponsible use of vehicles. Police Scotland say: “The PSYV programme aims to strengthen the relationship with the police and young people, breaking down barriers and promoting positive role models.

“PSYV promotes a practical way for young people to understand policing by supporting the Police in their local area through volunteering. As part of this, young people are given a chance for their voice to be heard and encouraged to promote good citizenship.

NO PIER REPAIRS AND NO WAVERLEY Despite a spirited campaign to bring back the Waverley to Helensburgh pier its berth is unlikely to be brought up to safety standards for use even by 2020. Waverley Excursions Ltd. recently announced that 2020 is the earliest sailings will resume as the ship needs new boilers.

complete repairs in time for the 2020 season. Updates will be provided once more detailed information is available.”

If sailings do resume in 2020 Helensburgh trippers will have to catch a shuttle bus service to Kilcreggan Pier, where the Waverley will call on Thursdays and Saturdays.

Earlier this year a petition to bring the famous paddle steamer back reached in the region of 2000 signatures, while a weekend event organised by Helensburgh Seafront Development Project (HSDP) attracted 300 supporters. The crowd, which included local MSPs Jackie Baillie and Maurice Corry, had a clear message at the rally: “Save the pier, and bring the Waverley back.”

Argyll and Bute Council have already stated that early survey findings indicate that major work will be required before the pier can be made available for berthing.

HDSP said in a statement : “Residents, business owners and community group representatives from Helensburgh and surrounding areas along with MSPs Jackie Baillie and Maurice Corry called for the council to dig deep and find the funds to repair the iconic structure. “They called for the council to support the HSDP’s vision to upgrade and regenerate the pier to allow it to accept craft of all sizes including a ferry service for cruise passengers from Ocean Terminal in Greenock thereby creating a sustainable future for the pier for many years to come.” The HSDP say that if anyone is interested in helping them bring new life to Helensburgh Pier, email helpHSDP@gmail.com.

Officials say: “Works of this nature on any structure in the water are complex and it may not be practically possible to

Annie-Marie King at the Centre says: “I particularly want to highlight our Open Day on Wednesday 5th June and invite people along to meet our team of staff and volunteers to find out about what we have to offer people living with dementia in the local community including information on our Dog Days, Football Memories, Creative Writing Group and other activities.” This year, the key theme of Dementia Awareness focuses on research and local support. Alzheimer Scotland want to highlight the support available as well as the importance of dementia research, the impact it can have and the vital need for new research volunteers. A spokesperson said: “Dementia research is crucial to making a difference for people living with dementia now, and in the future. It can only take place with the help of volunteers who have dementia and those who do not.”

Proud and muddy, Kilcreggan boy Patrick O’Toole celebrates completing MacTuff Scotland’s toughest obstacle course race.

Diary Dates for Helensburgh events: Monday 3rd: Strawberry Tea 1-4pm, Dementia Resource Centre. Tuesday 4th: Quiz Night, 7-10pm, United Reformed Church. Wednesday 5th: Open Day, 104pm, Dementia Resource Centre. Thursday 6th: Film & Reminiscence Afternoon, 1.30-4pm, Dementia Resource Centre. Friday 7th: Challengers Group,10.30-11.30am & Musical Afternoon with Local Vocals, 2-3pm at the Dementia Resource Centre.

Patrick also raised over £100 for the Cot Death charity. He’s a member at the Cove and Kilcreggan Youth café and its founder Susie Will says: “He is a great boy always helpful and willing. He was so stuck in mud he lost his vox trainer. But grandma is getting him more.” MacTuff is a gruelling course, a test of 7, 15 or 30 kilometres of challenging terrain through mud, water and obstacles built, say the organisers to test your physical strength and your mental grit which, they add, builds true character through true challenge.

biographies of all the men of the town named on the memorial in Hermitage Park who were killed in World War I. To mark the Centenary of the First World War, the project will enable local people in Helensburgh to come together to preserve the memories and heritage of the people who lived through it. With help from professionals, volunteers will collect photographs, newspaper clippings, documents, letters and photos of keepsakes, as well as family tales passed down to help them build a clear picture of what life was really like. Organisers say: “We will be casting our net far and wide using all the library and online resources and archives available but most important of all will be the contribution of local families. We will be providing training and

workshops in using archives and hope local people who wish to be involved will come along to help us deliver the project. If you have a relative named on the memorial please get in touch with us.” The information gathered will be digitally recorded and an on-line interactive archive will be created where everyone can access and contribute information. The archive will allow the public to discuss, contribute, share and research information about the Home Front. The men named on the war memorial all made the ultimate sacrifice. The project will honour them and their families and connect those of us who live here today with our war dead. Organisers of the project add: “We will shortly be announcing the first workshop dates and events – please keep an eye on local media and our Facebook

What's Up Doc? with Dr Nick Dunn

This month: NO PAIN - NO GAIN...? A few weeks ago the Health Department announced that there would be “Government Health warnings” on packs of strong pain-killers such as codeine and morphine to alert people to the dangers of long term use of these for noncancer pain. There have been growing concerns both here and in America that people are becoming addicted to drugs for long term conditions such as back pain or arthritis which are causing a worsened quality of life. These can cause constipation, fatigue, and low mood and often do little to help the patient’s overall health and well-being.

Admittedly it has been difficult for GPs faced with patients complaining of recurring or long-term pain to offer help in the short term, other than resorting to the prescribing pad. The first rule of Medicine is “first do no harm”, and perhaps adding to patient’s problems by prescribing strong painkillers may not be the best option in the long term. Pain is a distressing unpleasant experience but is mediated through three main mechanisms – Physical, Psychological and Emotional. Hopefully we can look to a future where we address the pain problem more holistically and reduce reliance on drugs?

“OUTSTANDING” CARE AT LOMOND NURSERY Lomond Nursery has celebrated the findings of its latest Care Inspectorate Report, in which it was awarded the highest possible grades across all areas in which it was inspected.

The report highlighted that the nursery staff: “created an inclusive, nurturing environment where children and their families felt welcome, listened to and respected.” It went on to say: “the children are happy, achieving, confident about expressing their thoughts, views and feelings.” During the unannounced inspection period the children created a ‘Snack Café’, learning how to make fruit kebabs, designing and making menus, and learning how to calculate

The grades, awarded for quality of care, and support and quality of staffing, are representative of ‘outstanding’ and ‘sector leading’ care according to the Care Inspectorate. The school is the only nursery service to achieve these grades across the Argyll and Bute area and has been commended for delivering these high standards across all levels, including those not officially assessed.

costs and change using real money. They also created a ‘space ship’, which was constructed using recycled modelling materials. The report also praised the nursery’s focus on outdoor learning, highlighting that: “staff have created a rich learning environment both inside and outdoors, that was inspiring children to be creative, curious and inventive.” Students used a mud kitchen, built and played with obstacle courses made of blocks of wood,

planks and crates, practised their fine motor skills through weaving, sung songs and listened to stories. The school’s commitment to adventure and learning in the outdoors begins at nursery and this has been recently enhanced with a new fleet of balance and pedal bikes, sponsored by the PTA. This will allow children to learn to cycle as part of the curriculum which will further increase activity levels as well as developing gross motor skills and balance.

PARKLANDS PUPILS AT PRESTIGIOUS LUNCH Staff and pupils from Parklands Primary School were invited to a special lunch at the Hilton Hotel in Glasgow recently to tell guests how charity funding from the Scottish Property Industry has benefited them. The charity called SPIfox was launched in 1983 by a group of property and construction professionals, with the main objective of raising funds to help disadvantaged young people. The sensory room at Parklands was in need of refurbishment and, following a visit from SPIfox, the charity agreed to fully fund a complete overhaul of the room, costing more than £22,000.

the very best start for all our young people so it’s wonderful to hear that the children at Parklands are thriving from their new sensory room.” “It’s great that the pupils were invited along to the Hilton Hotel to talk to guests about the benefits of the school’s new facilities.”

The work was carried out in February this year and the children are now benefiting from lots of interactive high tech equipment, including an interactive floor mat that works alongside a variety of programmes for different abilities, as well as a fibre optic curtain, star carpet and aurora borealis tube. Argyll and Bute Council’s Policy Lead for Education, Councillor Yvonne McNeilly said: “We want

Legal Matters with Gill Bowman BA LLB This month: THE SCRA Last month I discussed the steps involved in progressing grounds of referral through the court system. Following on from that, and once grounds have been established, a hearing is convened in order to determine what happens next. The Hearing is made up of three panel members who are trained volunteers. One panel member is responsible for chairing the hearing and a Reporter from the SCRA will be there to ensure all the correct procedures are adhered to. Also present should be the child, their carer or parents, social work and any other person who may have relevant information, such as a teacher or health care provider.

Parklands pupils were guests of honour

The purpose of the hearing is to decide whether the child’s circumstances require some form of compulsory measure for their own protection, guidance,

treatment or control. An order should not be made in relation to a child unless it is necessary. This becomes a relevant consideration where there may already be a voluntary arrangement in place that resolves the concerns raised in the grounds for referral and the supporting facts. There are many examples of this and they may include a child staying with a family member for a period of time or a parent attending a parenting class or addiction support services. If made, a compulsory order should remain in place for a year. The child or a relevant person can ask for a review of the order after a period of three months and the social work department can request a review at any time. Again, you are entitled to legal representation at a children’s panel and if you have any questions you should speak to a solicitor.

FOCUSES ON MENTAL HEALTH MUSICAL SUCCESS DESIGN Award-winning, local garden designer Rachel Bailey has been selected to create and exhibit a long border at the RHS Chatsworth Flower Show which takes place this month.

Huge thanks have come in from the Matinee at the Musicals 2 crew. The final amount raised was a staggering £5445! Cheques have already been presented to Myeloma UK and the Beatson Cancer Charity. The Tower Digital Arts Centre generously waived their share of the final amount meaning that all monies raised will help the two cancer charities. The show was a blazing success which left audiences grinning, tearful and deeply touched. The team involved are already planning next year’s extravaganza and a date is already scheduled: Sunday 23rd February 2020. Get it in your diary folks!

RHS Chatsworth’s 2019 theme is the ‘Five Senses’ and Rachel, working with colleague Nicola Sweeney, has created a flowering border that’s described as immediate and subtle in its impact and which will highlight the important issue of mental health. “We’re delighted that our proposed exhibit has been chosen for RHS Chatsworth,” said Rachel. “Mental health issues affect many of us, and our border will highlight the important connection between scent and emotional wellbeing. “Our sense of smell directly influences our emotions, memories and physiology at an instinctive and subconscious level; inhalation of plant extracts is

known to have a positive effect on brain activity. In particular, rose oil vapour is thought to have therapeutic properties, and the iconic rose will be central to the border.” A strongly scented variety will be planted in a pattern resembling a brain wave, while an abstract metal sculpture will symbolise the direct effect of scent. Additional plants will be used to stimulate other senses: touch with textured foliage, like grasses, sight with colourful and aesthetic plants and flowers and sound using rustling foliage and flowers that will attract pollinators. Rachel adds that the design

reflects her company’s ethos of, where possible, sourcing quality local materials and environmentally-friendly products, and including plants that are beneficial to wildlife. To this end, Rachel will be working with Scottish nursery, Binny Plants, and local craftsman Chris Barrowman, who will create the sculpture. A former biological research scientist and project manager, Rachel trained as a garden designer at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh. She established Rachel Bailey Garden Design in 2015, and has since been working with clients and a variety of gardens, in Helensburgh and beyond to create innovative and inspiring designs. LET US KNOW WHO SHOULD RECEIVE A SHARE OF OUR £1,000 COMMUNITY CHEST delighted to see the return of our successful Community Chest initiative with the Helensburgh Community Advertiser, and to offer readers the chance to nominate their favourite local cause to receive a share of our £1000 cash donation.

Last year's winners from Grey Matters, Helensburgh & Lomond Autism and Visiting Friends

The Helensburgh Community Advertiser has once again teamed up with leading housebuilder Taylor Wimpey West Scotland to offer local good causes across the Helensburgh and Lomond area the chance to receive a share of £1,000 in our fantastic Community Chest initiative! We want you, our readers, to nominate worthy causes in from across the local area which you feel are most deserving of a share of this generous cash award. It could be a local charity which relies heavily on donations to keep up its good work in the community, or an organisation which makes a

real difference to the place where you live – the choice is yours. We are accepting nominations for the Community Chest until 4pm on 14 June 2019. Our editorial team will then whittle down the nominations to produce a shortlist of the most deserving causes, before inviting readers to vote for

their top three favourite charities or local causes to receive a cash boost! Kirsty McGill, Head of Sales for Taylor Wimpey West Scotland, which is currently building high-quality new homes at its Hermitage Grange development in Helensburgh, said: “We are

“The Community Chest is a great way to recognise the unsung heroes that are found in the local communities where we build new homes, and I’d urge readers to get involved and nominate their favourite cause. Last year we gave community cash awards to three great organisations, and I’m looking forward to hearing from readers which groups or charities should be recognised this year.” To nominate a good cause for the Community Chest, email editor@ communityadvertiser.co.uk, with “Community Chest nomination” in the subject line, and include your name, telephone number, details of the organisation you are nominating, and why you think it should receive a share of £1,000. The deadline for nominations is 4pm on 14 June 2019.
