“HEARTFELT” SUBMISSIONS FOR INSPIRING BOOK Helensburgh Heroes have revealed the medals which will be given to the local women who contribute an entry towards their 100 Women of All Ages project. The project aims to celebrate the Centenary of some women being granted the right to vote in the UK. Heroes launched this project in memory of local suffragette and activist Eunice Guthrie Murray who features on the medals. The aim is to get local women to contribute a total of 100 entries – at time of writing this total hadn’t quite been reached so an appeal was published on their Facebook page for more women to get writing.

Organisers tell us: ”This project isn’t about having a book compiling 100 biographies. Instead, it’s about the women of the Helensburgh and Lomond area, and your role models. We've had some beautiful and heartfelt submissions for the 'Woman of All Ages' book and we'd like to thank everyone who has taken the trouble to write to date. We extended the deadline to enable some folks to finish off their entries. This also gives us the

maximum of 300 words about their nominee and explains their choice.

opportunity to reach out and encourage you to consider an entry. We really do want to reach the 100. So please do consider writing.” Eunice herself was also a prolific writer and published many books. She dedicated her 1930 book ‘Scottish Women of Bygone Days’ to ‘To the Women of All Ages who Defied Convention and Held Aloft the Banner of Progress.” The charity launched the project to commemorate Eunice’s life and others like her by creating a book written by 100 local women of all ages, titled: “To the Women of All Ages by Women of All Ages”. Each contributor – from primary school age to elder community members – selects an inspirational female role model and writes a

COMING TO BOOK FEST

BOOK

Cove and Kilcreggan Book Festival returns this month with many high profile authors coming, including Scottish Makar, Jackie Kay and the Queen of Crime, Val McDermid. Details released on The Lochside Press web site reveal that another hugely successful crime writer, Alex Gray, is joining the line up and there is the welcome return of Sally Magnusson, this time with her debut novel. Angus Roxburgh, formerly the BBC’s man in Moscow is launching the proceedings whilst the following day will see the brilliant foreign correspondent Allan Little in conversation with Gavin Francis, the Edinburgh GP who has become one of the country’s most successful writers on the human condition. Organisers say: “They make quite a double act and will be reprising their hugely

popular event at the Edinburgh International Book Festival where Allan is the chair.” A less familiar name is Jane MacKenzie, but her latest novel, Tapestry of War, is partially set right here on the Peninsula and features the world war two hospital at Knockderry Castle and the American base at Rosneath. The brilliant author, essayist and playwright Andrew O’Hagan is also coming this year. And making his third visit is perennial favourite James Robertson who has written an off beat biography with conversation and songs of the late, great Michael Marra. Joining James will be legendary folk musician Rab Noakes and they are our special Saturday night feature.

Organisers add: “We think you’ll agree it’s quite a line up and we’re confident of a healthy audience for them all who will have the opportunity after each event to chat to the authors, buy their books and have them signed.” Diary date: Nov 24 and 25 Tickets will be available in some local outlets but you can book online coveburghhall. org.uk/what-s-on/ cove-burgh-hall/ book-festival-2018/

SANTA’S VOLUNTEERS LIGHT THE TOWN This year the weeks of work to deliver Helensburgh’s Christmas lights spectacle is an exciting joint venture between Santa’s volunteers and local business Night and Day. Work has already started to put up the 163 features throughout the town and local residents will see the team working together over the next few weeks to ensure the town is ready to sparkle once again with “The Best Lights in the West”. The switch on will be on the afternoon of Saturday 24th November. The event is only possible because of generous sponsorship by Helensburgh and District Round Table who have donated £2000 to provide the stage and entertainment in Colquhoun Square. Vivian Dance from the Helensburgh Festive Lighting Trust which owns, repairs, maintains and stores all the lights on behalf of the community tells us: ”Since March the group has been working one day a week in the grotto to ensure all repairs were completed in time. “This happy band of volunteers donates around 800 man hours to the Christmas display each year and they are delighted that Shaun Craig and Mervyn Wright of Night

and Day have completed the required training needed to install all of Santa’s lights.” The volunteers are very grateful for help from the Community Advertiser, The Coffee Club and The Terrace Café who provide much needed hospitality for Santa’s helpers. Vivian adds: ”We would love to hear from any local group who would like to be on stage and entertain the crowds, a chance to be involved.”

The Trustees tell us they really appreciate that Helensburgh is being marketed as a Christmas town through the support of Helensburgh Chamber of Commerce and local businesses, Grasshopper Toys on West Princes Street, and the Old Christmas Shop on West Clyde Street. For further information on all the festivities and to get involved visit: Facebook: Helensburgh Christmas Light Switch on or www.instagram. com/helensburghfestivelights

Dick's career as performer and composer has encompassed classical, rock, jazz, traditional, and much music that does not fit easily into any particular category. He has received commissions from all manner of organisations

to write all manner of music, including the 'Helensburgh Suite' which will open the programme. As a multi-award winning performer on saxes, clarinets and recorders he has played live and on recordings and broadcasts with many artists and groups including the Hebrides Ensemble, the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and the Michael Marra Band. Alison Affleck won Best Jazz Vocalist, 2014 Scottish Jazz Awards. She sings and swings with some of the finest musicians in Scotland and further afield. BBC Jazzhouse say: “Alison sings with the same kind of élan and

swing that is very evident in the recordings of a certain Billie Holiday. Now this is high praise indeed but I can assure you that it is entirely accurate.” The other members of the group have also received excellent reviews. BEER FESTIVAL HELPED SWELL FUND The 17th Cove and Kilcreggan Real Ale Festival was ‘Animal Magic’ this year and helped swell the coffers of the Burgh Hall maintenance fund. Hundreds of people came from far and wide, and just down the road, to sample 20 animal named beers as well as ciders, wine and the usual range of kitchen delights.

Drinking fine ale helped save the hall

The Festival is one of the major fundraising efforts for the community-owned Burgh Hall which has begun the first phase of a major renovation with an application for work on the historic building’s frontage. There have been several attempts to stop water leaking through the façade of the hall since the community took it over in 2001, when Argyll and Bute Council had threatened to close it, saying that repairs totalling £190,000 were needed. But the board of directors says that there is still water ingress, due to the combination of the stonework and its exposure to the prevailing wind in storms, so a more comprehensive project was needed. An application for listed building consent has now been submitted

VOLUNTEER HERO AWARD FOR MARJORY

Late News

Marjory Barrington from Shandon has been recognised for superb efforts as a volunteer and awarded the Regional Hero title at the Argyll and Bute TSI Volunteer of the Year event. Marjory received the award at the annual ceremony which was held in the Parish Church halls last month. She currently helps out with four separate initiatives around Helensburgh and tells us that the recognition came as a shock but said she was delighted with the honour. She said: “It was a big surprise but I’m very grateful. I have worked in the Helensburgh Lunch Club for 15 years and for the last six I have coordinated the volunteer staffing. “This is such an important club, not only for the great lunches but it is a place to socialise, read the newspaper and generally put the world to rights.

Marjory, who is a keen musician and singer also started a dementia friendly choir two years ago, called Local Vocals, which now features around 40 people. She added: “Tuesdays with the choir have a very relaxed and fun atmosphere and I love doing this. “It is such a privilege to be involved with such an awesome group and the TSI give us a lot of support. The singers never cease to amaze me with their enthusiasm and ability. The lunch club was established almost 40 years ago and caters for

CLUB PLAN FOR WIDOWED

What's Up Doc? with Dr Nick Dunn

A club for widows and widowers in Glasgow is so popular it is oversubscribed, now a local woman is floating a plan to start one in Helensburgh. Pam Durrant tells us: ”A friend and I who have both lost our life partners would like the opportunity to meet up with others in the same position here locally in Helensburgh and are just putting feelers out to see if there is any interest locally. “We’d like to hear from any widows/widowers with their ideas. Should we meet monthly, should we meet during the day or evenings and where would people be happy to meet?

The plan to establish a Men’s Shed in Helensburgh which we first reported back in early 2014 has not floundered due to lack of interest and enthusiasm – it simply can’t find a home (writes Nick Cowie).

The plans were dealt a blow recently when a community bid to buy Argyll and Bute Council’s former depot site next door to Hermitage Academy failed. It would have been an ideal base, but The Friends of Hermitage Park were outbid by a private buyer who plans to build a care home on the Sinclair Street site.

Mr Mackay said: “We have more than 60 people champing at the bit to participate and we are very active, but unfortunately we have to disappoint them as we are still without a facility. They would all benefit from the services that we could provide. “In Helensburgh alone, there are more than 3,800 men over the age of 55 and we are sure we would attract more than 20 percent of them, which would be fantastic. There are so many skills that can be shared, but obviously we can’t do that without somewhere for them to work.”

Several attempts to find a place to set up the Shed have fallen through, however, group chairman Brian Mackay tells me he remains hopeful that a suitable location can be found soon for the group after four years of working on a solution.

November 2018 | Getting Ready for Christmas

Getting Ready for

s a m t s i r Ch

Take your current day-to-day schedule and imagine adding Christmas shopping, Christmas parties, and holiday travel all at once. You’ll thank yourself come mid-December if you use the extra time you have now to get ready for Christmas. Here are a few tips to help you do that.

Set and Fund your Budget Before you do any Christmas shopping, you need to determine how much you can afford. From there, decide who to include and exclude from your list. To make it easy, try setting a per-person budget. There is a growing number

of people that simply put all their gifts on their credit cards and then spend the rest of the following year trying to catch up on their payments.

Many families do lists, and many do not, so if you do ask people for their lists, go ahead and contact them now. Inevitably, there is going to be one person who takes their time getting a list to you. That's less likely to be frustrating if you have an early start.

memorable gifts you can give. Why? Because the recipient knows that you've invested a significant amount of your time. By brainstorming homemade ideas now, you're more likely to have the time necessary to complete the project.

Getting Ready for Christmas | November 2018

Tweedie tweed and leather specialist

Start Watching for Sale Items Keep an eye on TV and printed adverts for shop sales, deals and vouchers. If you find an item on your list, get it while it's on sale. One personal goal could be to have all your Christmas shopping done by the last day of November. That way you don't have to fight against the last-minute buying crowds on Christmas Eve.

Start on Your Christmas Cards Imagine how amazing it would feel if all your Christmas cards were ready to send by the middle of November – wouldn't that be a relief? Go

ahead and set a target goal of when you'd like to finish all your cards. Then create some type of plan to be done by that date. You could either mark off a morning on your calendar or do a little bit at a time.

Featuring fabulous awarding winning gifts and accessories, personalisation service offered.

Fill Up the Freezer There are a lot of great meals that you can freeze ahead of time so you have food available for those busy times. Prepare double or triple portions of some of your recipes. Serve a single portion, and freeze the extra portions. Another option is to block out a full cooking day where you make as many meals as possible.

With an early start and a bit of planning, you can survive the hectic holiday rush. When Christmas is over for another year, you will look back and have no regrets of the time you've spent preparing for Christmas while the pace of life is a little bit slower

Wonderful Original Abstract paintings direct from the Artist, free local delivery. All my paintings are one off originals, no prints, therefore you can be assured of high quality original pieces of art that won’t be seen anywhere else. My paintings come from the depths of my heart and are truly inspirational, they are product of many years of painting and study of the great modern masters like Pollock, Motherwell, Rothko and Picasso.

This month: REGISTERING A CHILD’S BIRTH A child’s details should be provided to the Registrar within twenty one days of birth. Either the mother or father of the child can register the birth if the parents are married. In the event the natural parents are not married, then the parents would most commonly attend the Registrar’s office together for both names to appear on the birth certificate. The mother can also register the birth alone. However, the father would require the mother’s consent in order to be able to register the child without the mother being present. As of 1st September 2009, in circumstances where a woman

If the women were in a cohabiting relationship but not a civil partnership or married, the mother and her partner are able to register the child’s birth jointly. Being registered on the birth certificate will provide both parents with full parental rights and responsibilities in relation to the child. Fall into Winter at Portavadie Stuart and Debbie Mainland enjoyed a short break at Portavadie Loch Fyne on Argyll’s Secret Coast. Just a 90-minute drive from our Helensburgh home, yet seemingly a world away, Portavadie immediately felt like the perfect place to escape, relax and recharge. The holiday resort is located on the west shore of the Cowal Peninsula with stunning views across Loch Fyne and to the neighbouring Kintyre Peninsula. We discovered that there is so much to do at Portavadie that we could easily have escaped the hustle and bustle of our work and family lives for a week or more.

out at an incredible vista, watching the clouds roll over distant hills and the yachts sail past on the sea loch.

Our four-star, selfcatering cottage, overlooking the marina, was wonderful – and could easily sleep four, if we had wanted to bring friends or family with us. Well-behaved dogs are allowed, too.

The Leisure Experience includes heated outdoor spa and infinity pools, indoor swimming pool, kids splash pools and a sauna or why not treat yourself to their award winning Spa Experience.

It had a double bedroom with en-suite shower room, a twin bedroom, a bathroom and a living-kitchen area.

If you enjoy outdoor activities, and we do, Portavadie is brilliantly located on what’s known as Argyll’s Secret Coast. There was so much to choose from on the doorstep, including walking, cycling, mountain biking, sailing, golf and kayaking, as well as visiting local attractions,

We were ideally placed to access one of the star attractions at Portavadie, the outdoor infinity pool. It was amazing to sit and swim in the heated pool looking

such as castles, botanical gardens and museums. And after being busy doing things, we returned to Portavadie to enjoy more rest and relaxation, as well as excellent food and drink. The Lodge Kitchen was a lovely, informal place for an evening meal and, for a treat, we dined at the Marina restaurant, which has a 2 AA Rosette award. The café at the pool area has hand-made pizzas and home-churned ice cream. After a rejuvenating short break we were reluctant to leave, but we will be back, perhaps with the kids and dog next time, or maybe just ourselves!

How the Pavilion will look on completion

The latest news on the new park pavilion is that its completion has been delayed, but it should be finished by the end of this month allowing other work to progress. The pavilion needs to be completed before the landscape contractors Hawthorn Heights can return to site to build the park’s new carpark (an extension to the Victoria Halls car park) and finish the landscaping works around the pavilion. The water and electricity supplies for the park are controlled from the pavilion so the newly installed lamps and the play park water trough game have to wait to be connected. Even when the pavilion is finished, as the main foul water

and sewer runs to the carpark, there will be a delay for the final landscape works to be completed before it can open. The Friends said: “Obviously we are disappointed that the pavilion has fallen behind schedule and the knock on effect this has on completing the final landscape works. We are as keen as anyone to see all the building and landscaping works completed. However, we are nearly there and we know

it is worth waiting a little bit longer for. “We are delighted with the quality of the landscape works throughout the park and were pleased the majority of the park was able to reopen in midSeptember.“ Looking ahead the Friends report that nearly 3000 new plants have been ordered for the park and will be arriving next April. 2500 of the new perennials will be for the formal flower beds at the sundial garden by the Hermit’s Well. The gardening work to upgrade the park’s planting will commence in earnest in the Spring with a great deal of work on preparation of the beds, moving shrubs and pruning done over the winter.
