AL MURRAY DELIGHTED TO PLAY IN THE TOWN Top comedian-turned-musician Al Murray says he is excited to be visiting Helensburgh for the first time later this month. Al, who spoke exclusively to the Community Advertiser ahead of his tour date at The Tower Digital Arts Centre, will play a set with his band Fat Cops at the 6th edition of the popular Café Improv! programme. He added: “Playing in a serious band has long been a dream for me. I played drums as a kid and then took it up again more seriously about 15 years ago. “I have played in other ‘dad’ bands before but the Fat Cops is the real thing. We play original material
and we have made a record. It’s really exciting.” Al, who is famous for his alter ego The Pub Landlord, is still touring as a stand-up comedian but he has now added the Fat Cops to his busy work life. The 50-year-old said: “My life is a bit crazy paving basically. I live in London and play in a band that is based in Glasgow and Edinburgh. I am also on tour in Europe just now with ‘Landlord of Hope and Glory’. It’s busy but good fun.” Fat Cops formed two years ago and includes Al as drummer; Scottish journalist Euan McColm and former Bluebells frontman Bobby Hodgens on guitar; IT manager Chris Ayre on bass; Neil Murray – JK Rowling’s husband – on keyboards; and Chris Deerin, also a journalist, on vocals. They cut their first album last autumn.

Every week The Helensburgh Child Contact Centre provides a safe haven for children to meet non-resident parents. It is holding its annual fundraising coffee morning on Saturday 26 October, 10-12pm, in Helensburgh Parish Church. Diana MacIntosh, who is one of the organisers said: “The central concept of a Child Contact Centre is to offer a safe, friendly, neutral, child-centred environment for children to meet their non-resident parent.
“The Centre gives them the opportunity for this contact, which helps the children realise that they are loved by, and important to, both parents. It is designed to be a stepping-stone to a more permanent arrangement for future contact and over time parents often come to feel that they can continue the contact unaided.” The Helensburgh Child Contact Centre started in 2007 and is now staffed by an experienced

A TV drama featuring Line of Duty star Martin Compston has been filming on locations on the Rosneath Peninsula. The Nest, a five-part drama from Bafta and RTS Award-winning writer Nicole Taylor, centres on Cape Cove, a spectacular house on the shore of Loch Long. Compston, who first made his name in Sweet Sixteen, filmed in Greenock, leads the cast of the BBC1 series alongside Sophie Rundle, who has featured in Peaky Blinders and Gentleman Jack. They play a wealthy couple who are crazy about each other, want for nothing and live in a house in a beautiful location just outside Glasgow. The location for that house is Cape Cove, a five-bedroom
beach house designed by Cameron Webster architects and which won the GIA Award in 2011 and the RIAS Award and Saltire Society Housing Award the following year.

TOP PHOTOGRAPHER AT CLUB EVENT The Peninsula Camera Club has invited a world-renowned photographer to a fund and awareness raising event to be held at the Commodore hotel.

Colin Prior, a world renowned landscape photographer and documentary maker will talk about his work and career. Colin’s career started when he created a portfolio of images around Scotland’s coastline and in the Red Sea and was surprised to win ‘best newcomer to underwater photography’ in the Camera Beneath the Waves competition in 1981. He says: “Working at the time as an operations manager it was the catalyst that changed my life, and following a stint on a North Sea oil platform as a photo-technician, I was soon following a career as a professional photographer.�

FOOTPATH CONCERN
A community electric bike pool is to be launched on the Rosneath Peninsula. Funding worth £21,800 has been secured for the project, which is aimed at both residents and visitors.

The Rosneath Peninsula West Community Development Trust held a meeting last month to give locals a say on the Pedalling Peninsula project.
“The Pedalling Peninsula project will make these things more accessible for all and is inclusive in nature so designed to be accessible to people of varying abilities and young children.”
A spokesperson told the Lochside Press online news site it was hoped that passengers arriving on the Kilcreggan ferry would be able to use the ebikes: “The peninsula has a variety of things that are best experienced by bike or on foot, be that a tour of the heritage trails, visiting Linn
A community consultation was held in Cove Burgh Hall to provide more information on the project and give people an opportunity to discuss how best to spend the funding and to see pictures of some of the possible bikes which could be made available.
For decades walkers have been calling for a path on the busy B833 from Rosneath towards Kilcreggan, which is a popular route to Rosneath Castle Caravan Park. Last year the first phase of the work was completed after Argyll and Bute Council received a £250,000 grant from Sustrans, with a shared use path for pedestrians and cyclists being built beside the road from Rosneath village. A council spokesperson has confirmed that the authority still intended to complete the work, and that funds were being sought.

STAR LINE UP FOR PENINSULA BOOK FEST The Cove and Kilcreggan Book Festival, now in its 6th year has another stellar line up. Joining crime queen Denise Mina, who opens this year’s festival are a raft of top flight authors. There are some impressive session chairpersons as well. For instance, Sarah Smith, BBC Scotland editor, will be in conversation with Helena Kennedy QC as they discuss the poor deal so many women get from the law featured in Helena’s new book Eve Was Shamed. SUMMER 2022 IS NOW LATEST DATE FOR NEW POOL Helensburgh’s new pool and leisure centre, the centrepiece of the council’s £19.5m regeneration of the town’s waterfront, now will not open until summer 2022. It is another setback for the troubled project which was originally due to be open in early Spring next year (writes Nick Cowie). The further six month delay came only two months after the council said that the contract for construction of the leisure centre was scheduled to be awarded in August with construction work pencilled in to start in November. Critics have noted that more than £1.2m or 6% of the budget has already been spent on the new facility without a single brick being laid.

Earlier this year a report from the Council’s Director of Development and Infrastructure revealed that costs are still rising, which could yet force “value engineering” savings having to be made. As well as the swimming pool and leisure centre, the project also includes revised car parking
facilities, additional flood protection measures, and a range of improvements to the surrounds which include the preparation of a site for new shops fronting West Clyde Street. The plan for shops comes against a background of declining demand for high street retail outlets across the UK and big brands moving to online sales and out of town warehouses. Helensburgh and Lomond Chamber of Commerce has already said it is ‘deeply concerned’ about plans for new shops, as well as the impact on tourism and the lack of parking space for coaches visiting the town.

This month: MAN-FLU IS REAL! I sometimes worry that people under-estimate the effects of flu – even though we men are very brave about it! Seriously though, the influenza virus can sometimes do serious damage.
The club describes itself as a friendly group of photography enthusiasts, who meet up every fortnight to share images, set challenges and talk about all things photo related. The Helensburgh exhibition will feature some of the best photos taken by members over the year. Lorna Arroll for HDPC said: “We are a small community group, who love to get together and share and create photos, by setting challenges and meeting up to discuss our results. We want to grow the group to encourage others to join, and
plan on continuing to showcase our attempts in a local exhibition, however, we need to raise some funds to print and frame the best of our work.“ Lorna added that all ages and abilities are welcome in the group. No need for a professional camera, camera phones and compact cameras are all that is required to produce an interesting image. “We aim to inspire and teach each other through shared experiences. The club has a fundraising page on Just giving with extra funds being donated to Helensburgh's Sea Scouts.”

2019 EXHIBITION OPENING
"Fantastic Helensburgh" is the title of a new exhibition featuring the work of local artist Dorothy Whitaker. The show will be opened by BBC celebrity Roo Irvine, of "Antiques Road Trip", whose fantastic portrait will also be premiered, featuring Roo's gorgeous "girls" Maine Coon cats Mango and Kimichi. OLYMPIC HOPEFUL RETURNS TO INSPIRE From lessons on the Clyde to training in Tokyo, Olympic hopeful returns to where she first set sail at Lomond School. Tokyo 2020 Olympic hopeful Anna Burnet returned to Lomond School this week to deliver an inspiring talk to pupils on her career so far. The former pupil, who has also taken on the role as Sailing Ambassador for Lomond School, spoke to Lomond’s keen sailors, and those interested in what it takes to become an elite athlete, about her sailing journey. Anna provided the pupils with tips on balancing school work with competitive sailing, finding the right boat for your body type, finding the perfect sailing partner, and the importance of training, discussing her regimented training schedule that has allowed her to grasp a new style of sailing. Anna and her sailing partner John Gimson have been spending five hours on the

water per day, training 300 days per year, in the lead up to their bid for the Olympics. The pair recently claimed a silver medal in the Nacra 17 class on the first day of medal racing at the Olympic test event in Enoshima, Japan in August. The pupils were also keen to know more about women in sport, how she got into sailing and the types of boats she has sailed in, while Anna shared her experiences of trying to find the edge that gets you to the top.
Sailing is part of the school curriculum at Lomond School as part of a focus on adventure, taught on its own fleet of dinghies and in partnership with RNCYC. Johanna Urquhart, Principal of Lomond School, said: “It was absolutely fantastic to have Anna back for the day, hearing first hand about her successes since leaving Lomond and what the future holds. “We wish Anna all the best and will be supporting her journey along the way.”

Helensburgh is to get another food and drink outlet, but at the cost of losing its only remaining shoe shop. National chain Clarks announced that the Sinclair Street store is to close. Clarks has been a presence in the town since 1963, but will close at the turn of the year. The news comes after plans were submitted to Argyll and Bute Council to change the use of the premises from a retail to food and drink outlet. Proposals by the same applicants, Aspin Estates Limited, were approved by the local authority’s planning department three years ago, however, no work was ever carried out. A Clarks spokesperson said: “At Clarks, we continually review all of our stores to ensure that they

Wild weather, plunging temperatures and long, dark nights… autumn in Scotland is as different from the best days of the fickle summer as night from day. That is the “glass half empty” way of looking at a season which can be too readily assumed to be useful only for indoors activities based on evening studies, and risks missing some great opportunities for outdoor entertainment. You may have to wrap up warm, and not every day is going to be ideal for healthy walks or team sports, but in some ways – so long as you choose your times
and places carefully – the third quarter of the year can be every bit as interesting as the halcyon days of summer. While it’s true that during the summer holidays some agencies do their best to provide a variety of opportunities the plain fact is that most clubs, schools, etc, are either completely shut down or are operating on a limitedservice basis, while in autumn virtually every school, college and local club organisation
in the land has an active programme of indoor and often outdoor activities to offer. It is the season of “autumn gold”, when at its best, when attractions that are mobbed in the summer are suddenly largely free from tourists – the National Park, for example, still sees its fair share of visitor interest, but is much easier to enjoy during the less hectic days of autumn than in mid-summer, the season of mass participation festivals and crowds. By carefully selecting from the bewildering array of possibilities open to us in autumn it’s relatively easy to construct

The trick is to organise your time in such a way that you always have a Plan B if the weather makes outdoor activities seem more trouble than they are worth. YOUNGSTERS COMPLETE SEA CHALLENGE A mix of young people from West Dunbartonshire social work department, Blairvadach, and Cove and Kilcreggan Youth Café have completed an exciting sea voyage. Aboard a 75 foot sailing boat, ten young people with five crew from the Ocean Youth Trust Charity and two support leaders left from Oban on 8th July and sailed to Kyle of Lochalsh, Tobermory, Rhum and Mallaig finally arriving at Kyle on the 12th July. Susie Will from the Youth Café tells the CA: “The youngsters came from mixed backgrounds and there was not one who did not benefit from this voyage.

This month: MATRIMONIAL PROPERTY A large part of the role of a family solicitor is guiding clients through the separation process and advising about financial provision upon divorce. In Scotland matrimonial assets are divided fairly between the parties so it is important that there is a clear understanding as to what matrimonial assets are. Matrimonial Property is defined in s10 of the Family Law (Scotland) Act 1985 and includes all of the property belonging to the parties, or either of them at the relevant date, being the date of separation, which was acquired by them either: Before the marriage for use by them as a family home or as furniture or plenishings for that home; or
During the marriage but before the date of separation. There are of course some exceptions to these rules. Gifts or inheritance received by one party are expressly excluded as is property acquired by either individual before the marriage, unless, as already stated, it was acquired with the intention that it be for family use. An example of this would be a home that was bought by one person before the marriage but was intended to be the family and ultimately the matrimonial home. It is not always a clear cut process and it is important to seek legal advice when considering financial division upon divorce.

LITERARY LIFE CONTINUES TO FLOURISH The Cove and Kilcreggan Literary Society has a new season of talks ready for the new season which starts this month. Society members on an outing to explore the story of Scottish fruit wine
A brief sampling of talks after Christmas brings a first-hand account of groundbreaking work on protein structures by Neil Isaacs, a one time member of the team of Dorothy Hodgkin, with Crystallography and the Structures of Proteins. Looking towards the end of the season, it completes with, among other topics, Gareloch Class Yachts 1924-2020, Poetic Injustice – Life Springs and Neaps, and Life in a Cambodian Hospital. With these talks and more, a total of 18 over the season and a Christmas social event, the £15 membership for 2019-2020 represents great value. Visitors are very welcome at £2 per evening.
The Society will recollect the textile history of Paisley the following week, with Coats and Clark Binding Threads by Valerie Reilly, former Curator of Textiles at Paisley Museum.
It covers a wide range of social, scientific and cultural topics. The aim of the Society founded in 1947 is to:” Bring the world to the Rosneath Peninsula.” The eclectic mix of illustrated talks starting on Monday 7th October and running through to March lives up to that. The first talk is by the Rev'd. Dom Ind on the celebrated British nurse of the First World War, Edith Cavell.
Writing a novel will be illuminated in November by Mary Irvine with My Greek Love Affair, and as Christmas approaches The Story of Stirling Gin is described by founder June McCann.

And the population of the wider Helensburgh and Lomond area is estimated to have fallen by 2 per cent over the same period, from 25,581 to 25,019. However it has been noted that the situation may be changing due to recent large increases in the local housing stock.

ELTON TO COURT INTRIGUE AT COVE Dramas ranging from 18th century court intrigue to the story of Elton John will feature in Cove and Kilcreggan Film Society’s 2019-20 season.
That is followed on November 28 by Stan and Ollie, with Steve Coogan and John C Reilly starring in the story of the world’s most famous comedy duo.
Craighelen Tennis and Squash club has undergone a major refurbishment. The popular club’s squash court has just had a £20,000 upgrade including brand new plaster walls, new floors and glass doors. The refurb has just been completed and the club is now welcoming new members. Club nights are on Friday between 17.30 and 19.30 and juniors on Saturday morning 10.00 to 11.00. The club say: ”We provide tennis, squash, and racketball in a busy and friendly clubhouse setting, including a bar, bigscreen TV and pool table.”

Argyll and Bute Council is asking residents to help form the area's Community Food Growing Strategy.
LiveArgyll, the charitable trust charged with the management of Argyll and Bute health and wellbeing, has put out a call for new volunteers.
It recognises that there are a number of good community food growing facilities already in place in the area and the strategy will help inform how it can support and facilitate further activity. The council would like to hear from those who already grow their own fruit and vegetables, as well as those who do not but would like to give it a try. The Community Food Growing Strategy Consultation is on www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/ abCGS. This consultation is open until Monday 7th October 2019 and should take 5 minutes to complete.

The positions include: sports coach and assistant sports coach, which will see volunteers working with children and young people for half an hour at a time; swimming and fitness programme volunteers, which helps foster a lifelong skill and love of fitness and swimming; Reading Buddies, who will help both children and adults fall in love with books; Tech Buddies will teach PC and internet skills to those less technologically confident;
Bookbug volunteers to deliver the national programme of song and rhyme to the youngest members of our communities; homebound volunteers bring the joy of reading to someone who cannot leave the house; events, halls and theatres volunteers can build valuable experience and gain technical knowledge that translates directly to careers in creative industries; and museums and archives assistants, who will be responsible for preserving the history and culture of Argyll and Bute. NEW AFFORDABLE HOMES FOR TOWN EDITOR NICK STEPS Helensburgh now has 32 more affordable homes thanks to the redevelopment of the former Ministry of Defence properties in Jutland Court. Jackie Baillie MSP marked the official opening of the Castle Wood Court development. The Argyll Community Housing Association (ACHA) development sees 32 properties available for rent, offering a mixture of single bedroom to four bedroom terraced houses and flats. Helensburgh based company Callum Williamson Builders completed the construction of the £5 million project, which began in May 2017. ACHA chief executive Alastair MacGregor said: “This is a proud day for the association turning what was a derelict site in the centre of Helensburgh into 32 much needed homes.” Ms Baillie added: “I am delighted to see 32 new homes built in Helensburgh.

“There is a clear need for more housing in the area and the bonus is that these homes are suitable for individuals and families. “I want to congratulate ACHA for all their hard work in providing new homes for our local community.” Alongside the official opening a commemorative bench was unveiled in tribute to the late Danny Kelly, who died in June of this year aged 77. He was a passionate advocate for affordable housing and visited the development to view progress prior to his death.

He had already enjoyed a successful career, first as a trainee journalist with the Daily Mirror and then as a TV reporter and editor with BBC Scotland. He retired from full-time office work in his early 50s and continued to work freelance as a journalist and in public relations, while also running his own media training company. In 2005, he agreed with the Helensburgh & Lomond Community Advertiser owners that he would “look after the new magazine for a few months.” He added: “No one

I never expected to be still doing it at the age of 72, but one edition led to another and suddenly 14 years had passed. “In that time the Community Advertiser has become a major local success story and it has been a joy to play a part in that. However, it is always best to leave a good party before they chuck you out, so I'm hanging up my pen and wish it continued success.” Nick, who lives with his wife Janet in Shandon, says he will miss the local reporting. He adds: “I enjoy the mechanism of sitting down and writing news stories. I like the craft of reporting and being the first to find out a piece of news and turning that into

HELENSBURGH NETBALL CLUB CELEBRATES GOLD THISTLE MARK AWARD Helensburgh Netball Club is today celebrating its 2nd Gold Thistle Mark Award from Netball Scotland. This Award is only held by three other Clubs across the whole of Scotland with another 38 netball clubs achieving Bronze or Silver Level. The Thistle Mark recognises and rewards ambitious clubs that have a clear progressive pathway for developing players within the sport.
