GRAFFITI SPACE PLAN FOR HERMITAGE PARK The Friends of Hermitage Park are looking into creating a dedicated graffiti space in the park. The park has been blighted with vandalism and graffiti has appeared on many of the new fittings. Now the aim is to tap into the artistic talent which can often be displayed in graffiti and while not a done deal and still needing Council approval, a plan to encourage graffiti, but in a controlled way has been researched with a leading graffiti artist. Following on from conversations with the young people who hang out in the park to find out what kind of facilities and activities they would like, and what they think needs to be done to stop the vandalism, the Friends met Gaz Mac, the founder of SWG3
Yardworks at the old galvanisers yard in Partick. The Friends say, “It was fascinating looking at the graffiti in the park with Gaz and how much he could tell about who was doing it just from the style of the tags (names).”
to gather more information and develop some proposals to discuss with the Council and hope to gain approval to take a graffiti art project forward.
The Friends said, “We are of course upset to see the new benches, Gaz, who The Scotsman described as interpretation panels and even trees and paths being defaced by silly the Elder Statesman of the Scottish graffiti tags. It is not the right place graffiti scene, has undertaken a for it and it is ruining the enjoyment lot of projects with young people of the park by others.” encouraging their creativity and turning what many would consider Their aim, to start a graffiti project an eyesore into an art form. to provide training to the youths to help them create skilled artworks The Friends are now planning a in dedicated spaces, might be the follow-up visit to SWG3 Yardworks
answer to stopping what is currently vandalism. The hope is that such a graffiti project will create something interesting and attractive that the young people would be proud of, and might also help them feel more included in the park. Adds the Friend’s spokesperson: “We appreciate this might be a bit contentious but the research we have so far suggests it would be a positive way to turn what is currently a problem into something creative and which provides opportunities for young people.”
Gaz's graffiti shows that it doesn't have to be an eyesore

COULD YOU GIVE A CHILD A HOME? Argyll and Bute Council has put out an appeal for people to come forward and apply to become foster carers. There are always a number of young people looking for foster carers in Argyll and Bute, for a variety of reasons, either on a temporary basis while plans are made for their future, or for an extended period if they are unable to go back to their family. Policy Lead for Social Care, Councillor Kieron Green said: “There are a number of reasons why children and young people can’t remain with their own families and need to be looked after and accommodated. "We need more foster carers to provide these young people with the caring, stable environment they deserve and we are calling on members of the public to help. "Every child deserves to live in a safe, loving home but unfortunately that’s not always possible. That’s why we need people in our communities to help to give a child a chance.”
James Auld Funeral Directors
Cllr Green adds that foster carers can come from a variety of backgrounds. As long as they are over 21, factors including age, marital status and sexuality don’t matter. The most important thing is that the children are matched with people who will give them love and stability. The council is particularly looking for foster carers for teenagers and sibling groups, but would

THE 18TH COVE AND KILCREGGAN REAL ALE FESTIVAL To celebrate its coming of age the 18th Cove and Kilcreggan Real Ale Festival is staying in Scotland and will be offering a highland fling of mountainous beers and ales. Gathered from breweries across hill and glen thirsty drinkers are welcome to sample the selection of eighteen ales as well as six ciders, ranging from sweet to dry. Good ales go with good food, and this year due to the renovation work going on at the Hall they have enlisted the help of the folk behind the award winning Lost Bothy serving Scottish Street Food, they are putting together a mouth-watering menu to accompany the fine ales on offer. They have fed many a hungry mouth at events such as The Scottish Open and the Edinburgh Festival.

VISION RESEARCH NEEDS MORE INPUT In our June edition we reported on the Vision for Helensburgh project, supported by Helensburgh Community Council which is gathering the views of Helensburgh residents and visitors. The organisers report that despite a high degree of “consultation fatigue,” already a coherent and consistent set of views is beginning to emerge, but more input is needed. A number of responses have highlighted the pier and the future development of the waterfront as important aspects of a vision for Helensburgh.
and a selection will be exhibited at a public event when the information-gathering phase is completed. Norman McNally who is heading the project said: “Despite being knocked back in our bid for external funding, we are continuing our efforts in gathering more opinions.
Others emphasise the improvement of local transport and “A series of workshops with key community groups is currently communication as key areas for being scheduled and you can attention. expect to see members of the project group and other volunteers In addition to completed out and about in Helensburgh questionnaires, both online and face to face, the number of photos seeking the views of residents and visitors. submitted continues to grow
“So if you are approached by someone in a light blue high visibility waistcoat carrying a clipboard when you are in town then don’t run away. They are not trying to sell double glazing or tell you if you are due any PPI compensation. They are trying to help us improve the town we live in - so please give them a couple of minutes of your time.” You can also complete the survey online as well. FREE MUSIC AT “BEST GIG ON LOCH LONG” Over the past 32 years, an annual event nestled between Ben Lomond and the Arrochar Alps has reflected a vibrant community spirit and a commitment of fundraising for vital charities. Over that time the Arrochar and Tarbet Gala has raised over £100,000 for charities, with a regular commitment to leukaemia charities, CHAS the Children’s Hospice and local charities. On September 28 what’s billed as the best gig on Loch Long returns with a free day of music. GalaFest, held at the 3 Villages Hall in Arrochar, opens with the gentle sounds of Norrie McGregor followed by the Cajun influenced Jennifer Ewan Band who will take over in the afternoon, with a stirring mix of compelling original songs and old-time Cajun dance music with a Celtic tint. The band comprises singersongwriter/guitarist Jennifer Ewan and reunites two former members

A ballot is to be sent to eligible voters within the area surrounding Castle Woods and Cumberland Avenue asking if they support taking two sites into community ownership. In June The Helensburgh Community Woodlands Group offered the owners the current market price of £100,000 for Castle Woods and £45,000 for the Cumberland Avenue site. The offer was rejected, but as it is now possible to buy neglected land through a compulsory purchase order, the Woodlands Group has started down this route. The Group say that while Helensburgh is generally considered to be a green town because of its many gardens, its tree-lined streets and its park, a glance at the map shows just how few green spaces there are where people can relax, walk or hold events. The Group say: “To help remedy this, and for some years now, the aim has been to buy the neglected land at Castle Woods between Rhu Road Higher and Ardencaple Quadrant and the damaged site at Cumberland Avenue.” The two parcels of land have been designated by the Council

COUNTRYFILE FEATURED GARELOCH GDA A recent episode of BBC Countryfile featured the work of Riding for the Disabled at its 50th anniversary gathering and our local group was there in force. Based near Helensburgh, everything they do is made possible by their volunteers, riders and of course, the horses that make up Gareloch Riding for the Disabled group. The programme highlighted the group’s latest venture, carriage driving. Following months of fundraising, as well as extensive training with the carriage team and Bobbie, the pony, they opened up the new activity to volunteers and riders alike in 2019. Their riders continued to achieve incredible things throughout the year. From Scottish competitions to the Riding for the Disabled Association to National Competitions, they continued to have riders qualifying and riding to the best of their abilities.
Handyman all jobs, inside and outside
For those that didn’t compete many riders earned certificates in their horse care and riding proficiency levels. The number of volunteers has continued to grow and learn and as we reported in the CA, this culminated in being awarded the Argyll and Bute TSI Volunteer of the Year Organisation of the Year award. Numerous members of the volunteer community have taken on new challenges including carriage driving exams as well as undertaking coaching qualifications. A spokesman said: “None of the above could ever happen without the local community

that support us through funding and attending our fundraising events throughout the year. So as a group we would like to take this opportunity to thank every person and organisation that made our year possible.” The RDA was founded as a national organisation in 1969 and is dedicated to improving the lives of people with disabilities through the provision of horse riding and carriage driving. RDA now has a network of 500 volunteer groups across the UK. More details and how to get involved as a volunteer (for which no horsey experience is necessary) see garelochrda.org.

HOUSE PRICES DROP
STEAMER TERMINAL SITE FOR SALE Late News The site of the former railway station and steamer terminal at the east end of Helensburgh has been put up for sale. The land at Craigendoran, extending to approximately seven acres, is being marketed by local estate agents Clyde Property.
The average price for property in Helensburgh stood at £221,833 in August 2019. This is a fall of 0.77% in the last three months (since May 2019) and fall of 6.23% since 12 months ago. In terms of property types, flats in Helensburgh sold for an average of £135,097 and terraced houses for £151,583. Three bedroom houses sell for around £200,00. This is according to the current Zoopla estimates. There were 324 sales over the past 12 months. It took on average 110 days to sell a one bed flat down to between 70 to 85 days for traditional four and five bedroom properties, which continue to be in short supply.
An adjacent site immediately to the west received planning permission earlier this year for a B&B and kayak centre, despite opposition from nearby residents and Helensburgh Community Council. The Clyde Property brochure states: “The site is completely unique due to its stunning waterfront location, is totally level and commands stunning views to the south, west and east over the water across to Greenock.
“The site is identified within the Helensburgh-Craigendoran 'Area for Action' which suggests that the council will support recreational/tourist development within the broader area.” Craigendoran's pier, and adjacent railway terminal, was formerly a major hub for Clyde steamer services. The pier was opened in 1882, and was the home base for the paddle steamer Waverley when it entered service in 1947, but the facility was closed in 1972 after years of decline. The site was once a major steamer terminal

“RED BRICK” CARE HOME PLANNED What's Up Doc? with Dr Nick Dunn
This month: HERD INSTINCT… Care home plans face objections
Plans for a care home next to Hermitage Park in Helensburgh have faced fresh criticism in a council report. But planners say the large new care home in Helensburgh’s conservation area should be approved – despite public opposition. A report says: “It is considered that the use, scale, design and materials of the proposed development are acceptable in terms of land use policies and consistent with the surrounding settlement character.” Simply UK withdrew a previous application to develop the site but within days lodged a new, revised set of proposals for a four-storey care home on the site. An earlier environmental report had stated that the red brick finish was unsuitable for the parkland
setting. Neighbouring residents have also objected to the council. Historic Environment Scotland’s professional assessment was that while being some distance away from the Park’s war memorial the current massing, scale and height would have an impact. The council’s impact report also added: “The red brick is not considered to be suitable for the parkland setting as it would neither integrate harmoniously nor make a high quality contemporary statement. “However, if consent were granted then samples should be submitted for all materials as well as details of the proposed windows.”

Recently the UK lost its “measles-free” status which had been given by the World Health Organisation three years ago. 231 new cases were confirmed between January and March 2019. Measles is a very infectious viral rash which can potentially infect 15 others from one person, simply through small droplets in the air. Usually causing cold symptoms and fever, in babies or the frail it can cause pneumonia or brain damage, rarely leading to death. It caused many deaths before a vaccine for it was first produced in 1968. Measles is now more common in Europe than ever before in the past 10 years, due to falling
vaccination numbers, and there is a high risk of it coming into Scotland and spreading rapidly. “Herd immunity” – with a target 95% vaccinated (Scotland is 93%) – significantly reduces the risk of the most vulnerable in the community being infected and having complications. For this to work everyone needs to support vaccination, however this was undermined a few years ago by campaigners suggesting research showed a link between autism and MMR vaccine, which was not the case. Scotland has one of the best vaccination rates in Europe, but we should keep striving for better!

So much has
Changed
for the
Big Day
So much has changed with weddings over the years. It was back in the early 70s when this reporter got wed (writes Nick Cowie.) Things were so much simpler then.
Private Dining for the Perfect Wedding
Maybe it’s because there weren’t as many options as there are today. The planning of the wedding was usually left to the mother of the bride.
Multi-award winning Executive Chef Jamie Nicolson

Themes and the overwhelming options of colour didn’t present a problem back then as a majority of weddings used white as the colour. Although in our case the bride and bridesmaids opted for the floaty fashions of the
day, which incidentally still look fantastic in the photos. After the church, it was a meal at a local hotel, then back to the bride’s parents or sometimes a village hall where there’d be sandwiches, a barrel of beer and in the tradition of the day a display of the wedding presents. As one mum commented on mumsnet: “My godmother, who married in the eighties, bought her dress the week before, from Laura Ashley and there were no hen dos or stag dos.

Wedding Feature | September 2019 Things inevitably have moved on from these days and now your average wedding is a much bigger affair. One of the most important aspects of any wedding day is selecting the right reception venue, remember it can be much simpler to start and finish locally. This area not only has some of the best venues in the country but some of the very best services to guarantee a great day, from experienced caterers and florists to beauty specialists and photographers all at hand to help your day go smoothly. If you are going for a big do one planner’s tip is to remember that the dream of a perfect summers day is far from
guaranteed- especially in the West of Scotland.
Bridal Atelier
at Loch Lomond Galleries
If you opt for a winter wedding, due to fewer bookings, there can be major savings. If a winter wedding is planned, this may swing the decision towards a venue with dramatic features such as a sweeping staircase, feature wall or elegant fireplace, these will provide a lovely backdrop for pictures. In spring or summer, look for colourful gardens, waterfront views or an attractive gazebo and let the natural beauty of the great outdoors enhance your photographs, having great photos for social media is now a big motivator, figures show that three in ten say how their wedding looked on instagram was one of their prime wedding concerns. Whatever your budget our advertisers in the magazine represent the best of local services and can help you to a special day without breaking the bank. And maybe, a look at mum or gran’s wedding album might even be a source of inspiration rather than a giggle at the clothes!

WALKS WILL INTERPRET LOCAL HISTORY A local walker has started a new walking tour business called Argyll Walks.
Growing by Reputation & Recommendation
Gerena Sumen will interpret local history into: “60-minute, fun fact filled, low level walks.”
Luss Pier
The walks are all in Argyll and Bute. The first tour planned is around the Victorian village of Luss. Gerena says: “Having worked for VisitScotland at Tarbet Loch Lomond for five years, I have gathered information about Clan Colquhoun, battles, St Kessog and the Luss Parish church as a World Green site, and of course the pretty row of miners cottages dating from the 1800’s.” She adds that her walks suit a range of abilities, from easy low level 1.6km walk to a 5km high route around Arrochar and Tarbet. They interpret local stories on the building of the railway, geology, archaeology of Viking remains, a brief history of the clan MacFarlane and gain views of Ben Lomond, Arrochar Alps and Loch Lomond.

All walking tours are accessible by public transport although some forward planning is required for some. They cost £10 per person with no charge for children. The Luss tours include a visit to an old Viking “Hogback” grave marker which is from the 11th Century. The shape of the “hogback” is of a Scandinavian longhouse with tiles for roof and roundels for windows. Most visitors miss this piece of history when visiting Luss. Gerena tells the CA she has personally walked and researched

each heritage tour. As someone who has guided walks as a volunteer with a Glasgow hillwalking club for over 20 years, also at the Helensburgh HillHouse, as well as, at the Burrell Collection she says: “With local knowledge of the surrounding area of Argyll history, local walks and star attractions you will be in safe hands.” Contact: info@argyllwalks.co.uk or website www.argyllwalks.co.uk or see the Facebook page www. facebook.com/argyllwalks.

ingress. This protects previous investment and extends the life of the roads. Another benefit of surface dressing is that the road usually does not have to be closed during the treatment. Convoys or stop and go systems can be put in place to keep traffic moving.

It takes several days or weeks for chips to fully embed into the road surface, which is why there are warning signs advising drivers that the speed limit is 20mph. Keeping to that speed limit should prevent damage to vehicles. Work is carried out during warmer months to ensure that the binder in the surface dressing process sets and also to allow the chips to embed into the surface below. Carrying out the work when traffic flow is heaviest ensures the chips are embedded into the surface.
This is part of the council’s £16m capital reconstruction programme which has seen Argyll and Bute reach the top five fastest improving Scottish Local Authorities in terms of road condition.
FENCING & GROUNDWORKS
Councillor Ellen Morton, Depute Policy Lead for Amenity Services, said: “I appreciate that surface dressing is a highly contentious subject. Our experience shows this is clearly proving to be the most cost-effective way of looking after our roads at a time when funding is tight. “We are responsible for 2,930km of carriageway. But we have evidence that the network is improving and we are committed to do all we can, within the means we have, to continue in this upward direction.”

K13 PLINTH TO BE INAUGURATED The tragic sinking of the submarine K13 is set to be commemorated in the heart of Helensburgh this month by the submariners association. Some 32 submariners and dockyard personnel lost their lives when the K13 sank in the Gareloch in January 1917, while 48 people were rescued. The Submariners’ Association submitted plans for a plinth marking the event in Helensburgh’s ‘outdoor museum’ in Colquhoun Square. Argyll and Bute Council’s Helensburgh and Lomond area committee recommended providing £3,000 toward the installation, with the submariners group paying the remaining 51% of the cost. The design features a bronze profile model of the submarine, the date of her accident, the Submariners Association crest and a chart of the Gareloch showing the location of the accident, in the vicinity of the former Shandon Hydro Hotel. The association’s application at the time stressed that the plinth was not intended to be

“This is our second year of running this initiative with The Community Advertiser, and it makes our team incredibly proud to have the opportunity to make this type of donation that goes right to the heart of making a difference locally.
