£1k Boost for MUsic clUB as other community groups, to perform the Russian composer Stravinsky’s musical drama, The Soldier’s Tale.

DOnaTiOn: Milngavie Music Club President Hugh Macdonald receives a cheque for £1000 from Waitrose Milngavie Store Manager Amy Sharp, with members of McOpera and East Dunbartonshire children's Chorus.

Milngavie Music Club is delighted to have received a major funding boost for an exciting 75th anniversary celebration event next year. The club, which is one of Milngavie’s oldest voluntary organisations, has been awarded £1000 by Waitrose, as part of the John Lewis Partnership’s Music Matters scheme. It is one of only 30 grants made this year. Milngavie Music Club President Hugh Macdonald said: “We’re honoured to have been chosen

from hundreds of organisations nationwide for this generous award.” Milngavie Music Club’s successful project represents a collaboration with professional musicians from Music Co-OPERAtive Scotland (McOpera). They will work with East Dunbartonshire Children’s Chorus and Youth Choir, as well

Good lUCK IN RIo BETh We wish former Bearsden Academy pupil Beth Potter all the very best in this month’s Rio Olympics.

Another part of the anniversary celebration project, which will be staged next April in Cairns Church, Milngavie, will see composer Peter Kemp working with the young people to create a new musical work called A Milngavie Tale.

Beth, who grew up locally, will compete in the 10,000m track event at the 2016 Games. The 24-year-old qualifi ed earlier this summer when she took third place at the British 10,000m trials.

Hugh said: “We are delighted to have this opportunity to work with our talented young musicians and others in our community to create something special, celebrating the club’s 75 years of bringing world class classical musicians to perform here in Milngavie.”

Beth, who ran 32.05.4, nearly 10 seconds inside the qualifying mark, told Scottish Athletics: "I am so excited that I don't know what to say.”

Amy Sharp, who is the manager at Waitrose Milngavie, said: “Music can make such a difference to people’s lives. It really has the power to bring people together in our local community. We are delighted that we have been able to support Milngavie Music Club.”

She heads to Brazil with 80 other British athletes for the Games, from August 5 to 21.

24hR TENNIS RAISES £1K the same day as the 24-hour marathon, a team from Milngavie won the Senior Calcutta Cup for the first time in at least 15 years. Shaun said: “The Calcutta is a singles and doubles event for teams between division 1/1 and 3B, so it’s the top teams apart from the premier division.

Members from Milngavie Tennis Club kept a game in play for an entire day and night – and are delighted to have raised close to £1000.

The age range of players was from 4 to something like 84, which is amazing.

The 24-hour tennis marathon, which started at 9am on Saturday June 18 and fi nished on the Sunday at 9am, was supported by more than 100 members at the club based at Milngavie & Bearsden Sports Club, on Auchenhowie Road. The event was organised by head coach Shaun Tulloch to raise funds for new tennis courts. Shaun said: “Our 24-hour tennis event was a great success with more than 100 of our members, and friends of members, picking up a racket and getting on court through the day and night. “We did it in shifts, so we had people coming and going throughout, and we made sure there was at least one court with someone playing for the

A local social group for dads and their kids is doubling the number of meet-ups from this month due to popular demand. Since launching in 2014, Men Behaving Dadly has welcomed more than 50 dads (and granddads) to the Saturday morning meetings – and with around 20 dads now attending regularly, founder Matthew Edmonds has decided to increase the meet-ups to fortnightly. Matthew, of Milngavie, who has two young children, says: “It is great to see so many dads taking advantage of the group. “We started the group because we realised there were very few groups that enabled dads and

their kids to spend quality time together and to meet other dads. We saw this as a real need in the community and so we wanted to do what we could to meet that need. “Now the group is so popular we are increasing the number of sessions so even more dads and their kids can come along.” Men Behaving Dadly meets at Allander Evangelical Church, Milngavie, from 9.30am to 11am on Saturdays. From August 13 the sessions will be held every two weeks.

Other social events for the men have also been planned, including a sports quiz and buffet and a curry night. To contact the group tel: 07854931886, email: allandermbd@gmail.com and www.allanderchurch.co.uk.

neW SerViCeS: The Milngavie Youth Centre is the new location that will facilitate the needs of local residents

A community action group has welcomed plans for a revamp of Milngavie town facilities, including public toilets and an info centre. Milngavie Development Trust, formerly Making the Most of Milngavie, was one of a number of local organisations that met with East Dunbartonshire Council to look at ways to support and extend various local services. It was concluded that Milngavie Youth Centre would be

The council proposed a £50,000 capital award for the project and revenue funding of £6,000 annually until 2018 will pay for cleaning and maintenance of the public toilet. Wilson Blakey, Vice Chair of MCDT, said: “One of the priorities identified by the community in our Community Action Plan was for a public toilet in Milngavie. “Given the sale of the previous toilet building had been completed, EDC consulted with local groups, including us, and it was decided unanimously that the youth centre was the best available. “This is a great example of partnership working with community organisations to benefit the local area. Gordon McCorkindale, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Milngavie Youth Centre, said: "This is great news for the community and should bring to an end this period of uncertainty around the future for toilet and other facilities in the area.”

loCAl fESTIVAl IS BACK The Bearsden Festival returns for 2016 after a year away and promises to once again bring together the people of the community. Driven forward by Roddy Hamilton, the minister at New Kilpatrick Parish Church, a committee has been busy creating an impressive programme of events for September 3 and 4. They are still keen to hear from other traders, organisations, groups, clubs and volunteers who might be interested in getting involved with the festival. Among the events already lined up there will be music and voice workshops, a Play an Hour, puppet shows and pop-up workshops by trading outlets, such as cocktail making. Roddy says: “The fi rst year we held the festival, some five years ago, some of the local traders said they had their busiest ever days during the festival. This is great news and we hope people will turn out and support the festival in the same way again.” Other events taking place as part of the weekend will be an outdoor open stage with a

Late News We bring you more news and information about pets and animal care from your local vets. We’re happy to hear from more vets at fiona@thecommunitymagazine.co.uk Just three days after surgery, Blu was making great progress. She returned to see Alison and was walking well. Blu is very fond of the nursing team and gets quite upset in a kennel so she spent most of the day being cuddled by the nurses. Because of this, Blu was still very happy to come into the vets for her post-op check.

BlU noT So BlUE A dog named Blu was admitted to Avalon Vets in Milngavie with a swollen toe. Once anaesthetized, the vet, Alison, examined Blu’s toe and suspected a fracture or dislocation. An X-ray revealed her last bone was dislocated from the rest of the toe. Alison decided to removed her nail and the last bone.

QUALITY KITCHEN FACELIFTS

What would you do if you found a dog or cat without an owner? The advice is to report the stray dog to the local vets or a rescue centre. You can also call the nonemergency police number, 101. If the dog is wearing a collar tag, call the number. If not, ask a vets to scan for a microchip. If all this fails, create a “found” poster and place around the local area. In most cases, pets are reunited with their owners, thankfully.

For as long as she can remember,Vittoria Capaldi has wanted to run a business selling freshly-baked artisan breads and patisserie treats. In order to pursue her dream, at the tender age of 18,Vittoria headed to London to study at the National Bakery School. Throughout her studies she also gained valuable work experience in both Fortnum & Mason and Konditor & Cook. On completion of her studies, Vittoria headed home to Scotland to spend time with her family whilst working to make her dream a reality. After putting together an initial business plan, Vittoria contacted Business Gateway in East Dunbartonshire. Her Business Adviser, Alan Rutherford, provided practical advice on accessing additional support through the network. Vittoria is extremely grateful to Business Gateway as the assistance provided enabled her to submit applications which were subsequently successful, enabling her to launch her business. The Honeybee Bakery in Milngavie opened its doors in April 2015 and has been a phenomenal success, with sales exceeding initial projections and an expansion of the product range to include a lunch menu with a magnificent array of homemade soups and sandwiches. In recognition of her achievements so far, Vittoria was awarded the accolade of East Dunbartonshire Council’s Young Business Person of the Year 2015. Vittoria’s advice is specifically to young people considering setting up in business - don’t delay and take the plunge. She said, “Use the fact that you have very few responsibilities to enable you to dedicate all of your time to your dream.” Considering Vittoria is now a mere 22, her commitment and desire to running a successful business is a delight to watch, in fact, she makes it look a piece of cake.

What's Up Doc? with Dr Nick Dunn

New late train to Milngavie Bearsden and Milngavie residents will benefit from a new late evening train from Glasgow Central from this month. From Monday to Saturday, an additional train will depart Glasgow Central at 23:37 and arrive in to Milngavie at 00:01. This train will arrive at Westerton at 23.53, Bearsden at 23.56 and Hillfoot at 23.58 en route to Milngavie. This will offer customers a later last train from Mondays to Thursdays and on Saturdays, and will fill the gap between the current last and penultimate trains on Fridays. Another timetable change from August 8, when Queen Street High Level tunnel re-opens, will see new station calls on the route from Milngavie to Edinburgh.

These changes will only affect those travelling beyond Glasgow city. A ScotRail Alliance spokeswoman said: “We’re delighted to introduce a later train from Glasgow Central to Milngavie, allowing residents more time in the city at night. “And, by changing the station calls on the Milngavie to Edinburgh route, we hope to provide a more reliable service that meets customer demand. “We’re encouraging passengers to check if their journey is affected online or via the ScotRail app, selecting a date from August 8.”

This month:

INFECTIONS - WASH YOUR HANDs

As pupils return to school this month it will be time for them to meet up again and share stories from their holidays! However something we hope they won’t be sharing is infections – often easily transmitted by contact via the hands. Common infections spread in this way includes viruses causing skin rashes, coughs or tummy upsets, bacterial infections such as impetigo and boils, and threadworms which are parasites. The warmer weather at this time of year also promotes spread

of infection, so now is a good time to remind children to wash their hands regularly. Hand-washing is recognised as one of the most effective ways of reducing infections worldwide and in hospitals and clinics people are reminded to wash their hands properly before every contact. We should encourage hand washing from an early age, especially before eating and before leaving the toilet, and hopefully have an infection-free start to the school year!

A large volunteer support charity in East Dunbartonshire is keen to extend its help and partnership to more groups and individuals. East Dunbartonshire Voluntary Action (EDVA), which was formed in 2012, works with some 500 volunteers, community groups, charities, social enterprises and businesses across the region and including Bearsden & Milngavie.

The aim of EDVA is to offer four key functions: To build the size and number of community groups and voluntary organisations; to assist with volunteering development; to encourage more social enterprise

Scott Lafferty is a Development Worker with EDVA. He said: “We want to make as many people as possible aware of the valuable work that we do in the voluntary sector. “We assist at every level and in a tailor-made way to suit the individual or group. We can support as much or as little as required but our aim is to have a thriving volunteer culture in East Dunbartonshire and ensure that there is a resilient voluntary sector for the benefit of local communities.” EDVA offers a wide-ranging and holistic style of support. For example, they can help individual volunteers with personal

“Many young people also volunteer to help with their CV and career prospects but it’s more than just that. They talk about a greater sense of community inclusion and the ability to make a positive difference even at a young age.”

The benefits to volunteers are well documented, including a sense of satisfaction and reward from giving back to a community. Scott said: “The needs of each volunteer or group will be different and we are there to help to direct and support in the best way possible. OUR team take on Rough Runner and barbed wire crawls. Some have dialled up the pain factor to excessive extremes, with ice baths and even tear gas! Not only do you have to be super fit to stand a chance of finishing the run, but also pretty nuts to want to do some of these 'challenges'! Our mission is to replace the pain of these events with pure fun, by bringing your favourite TV game shows to life. We'll give you the chance to dodge sweeper arms, bounce through big balls, challenge the Cyclone and take on the Travelator.”

Something special is happening in Edinburgh this August and it’s sure to create quite a wave. Never before has an event of this nature, with obstacles this grand and unique been brought to Scotland. And, not only is it a first but it’s completely different to all the other events out there.

Rough Runner is a new and unique breed of event. Everyone has done the 10k’s and half marathons, and some will have even done an obstacle race before. But not like this.

On the 6 th and 7 th of August Rough Runner will be bringing their obstacle course race to Hopetoun House Estate in Edinburgh. Now the legendary Travelator will be on the doorstep of all those living in Edinburgh.

A Rough Runner race will be tough, of course, but gratuitous pain won’t be found there. At a Rough Runner event there is no electrocution, no fire and burning, and no freezing! Instead Rough Runner tries to blend

endurance with cool and unique obstacles inspired by the game shows that everyone grew up loving – Takeshi’s Castle, Wipeout, Gladiator, Ninja Warrior and more. Most people sat watching those shows and thought, “If that was me I’d do so much better!” and now they all have the chance to prove it. As founder, Jonathan Geitner says: “We believe that the current obstacle course racing scene isn't appealing to enough people. So many events out there do the same thing: militarystyle obstacles like climbing walls, mud pits,

Ticket prices start at £45 and range depending on how close to the event tickets are purchased, whether individual or team tickets are purchased, and whether a 5km, 10km, or 15km run is selected. Legal Matters with Gill Bowman BA LLB

This month: CHILD CAR SAFETY Children are particularly vulnerable passengers in motor vehicles and accordingly there are strict, and rather complicated, regulations surrounding their in-car safety. The law requires that all children under 135cm in height, around 4ft 5in, or 12 years in age must use an appropriate restraint, with certain exceptions for unexpected journeys, taxis and buses. Car seats must be EU approved and should have the required (E) label. All children under three years old must use a car seat, whether they are travelling in the front or back. In the event there

is no seatbelt to allow the appropriate seat to be fitted then the child is not able to travel in the vehicle. Again, there is the exceptionsof taxis; then the child should sit unrestrained in the rear. It is also important to be aware that you must not use a rear-facing child seat where a front airbag is fitted. If you are in any doubt about the appropriate regulations relevant to your child you should consult www.gov.uk for further information. It is the driver’s legal responsibility to ensure that children are using the correct restraint. Failure to do so is a criminal offence and you could receive a fine of £500.

STanDinG STOne: The Memorial at Milngavie Waterworks is in honour of John Frederick Bateman

Continuing our series of articles about landmarks in the local area, we take a closer look at a large memorial stone in Milngavie. If you walk around the reservoirs at Milngavie Waterworks, you will pass a large stone with a plaque on it. The plaque remembers John Federick Bateman, the engineer behind the 19th century project to supply Glasgow residents with fresh water. John Frederick La Trobe Bateman (to give him his full name) was born in 1810 and died at the age of 79. He was an English civil

engineer and was instrumental in creating the modern water supply that the UK relies on today. As a young man, and for more than five decades, Bateman designed and constructed reservoirs and waterworks. His largest project was the Longdendale Chain system, which has supplied Manchester with much of its water since the 19th century.

One of his other big design schemes was Milngavie water treatment works. Bateman was responsible for the hugely impressive aqueduct system that was part of the Victorian Loch Katrine water project to supply Glasgow with drinking water. It replaced the previous water supply sourced from the River Clyde at Cuningar Loop in Dalmarnock. Construction on the waterworks started in 1855 and was opened by Queen Victoria in 1859. The supply of fresh water pretty much eradicated typhoid and cholera, diseases that were widespread at the time, from the city. There is another memorial at Milngavie reservoirs, too. It remembers James M. Gale, who was, for 43 years, the chief water engineer of the Corporation of Glasgow. He believed Bateman’s waterworks scheme to be worthy enough to "bear comparison with the most extensive aqueducts in the world, not excluding those of ancient Rome”. * Please do suggest ideas for this series of articles about historical landmarks.

A Bearsden garden open weekend and plant sale has raised more than ÂŁ1,600 for charities Yogability and the Paul O' Gorman Leukaemia Research Centre. Organiser Anne Wyke and her husband John believe that visitor numbers and funds were boosted by an article about the event in the Community Magazine. Anne said: “Our event was a great success and I want to thank the magazine for the part it has played in this. Guests told us that they had heard about the event from reading the magazine.â€? Anne also wants to thank Baldernock Gardening Club for their plant donations.

Senior Savvy with Suhail Rehman

This month: Staying Socially active Finding ways to stay young at heart, stimulated, and busy is very important for seniors. Believe it or not, there are proven health benefits of social interaction in older adults including lower blood pressure and reduced risk for mental health issues such as depression. On the other hand, social isolation carries real risks. Some of these risks are feelings of loneliness and depression, high blood pressure and decline in mobility. Home Instead produce a useful What’s On Where Guide for Older Adults. This is a list of activities and groups suitable for older adults in Bearsden and Milngavie and we will be printing and distributing our latest version in the local community from September

A group of Milngavie parents is delighted to receive a £3,000 windfall that will help to transform an abandoned play area site. The Stalled Spaces award will see land located next to Milngavie Community Education Centre being turned into a revamped woodland play area. Two parents, Tracey AllanMcIntyre and Marianne Prentice, who formed a sub-committee of the Milngavie Community Council, have been the driving force behind the project.

Marianne says: “It all started as a conversation between friends after our kids had been at the toddlers’ groups held in the CE Centre. We all agreed that it was a shame that the site had become disused and overgrown. “When the opportunity then came up to apply for Stalled Spaces funding we put together an application, with support

Marianne says: “We plan to spend the money on equipment, bark and insurance. We would also like to host bird box workshops, plant wildflowers and put in place a willow structure. However, as Stalled Spaces funding is for temporary projects, we will not be installing any fixed play equipment. Now the project needs volunteers to help to support regular work parties on Thursday evenings. The group would also like to hear from anyone who has photographs of the play area as it previously looked. To find out more contact Marianne on 07449313393 or at marianne_amy@yahoo.co.uk.

Just like humans, your plants need to stay hydrated to stay alive but some of us aren't made of money to waste on expensive watering cans. Fear not.
