The pipes are calling

Dumbarton’s Levengrove Park was set to host a maelstrom of swirling tartan and stirring tunes of glory as this issue published. The Scottish Pipe Band Championships which takes place on Saturday 30th July from 9am 'til 6pm, have become one of West Dunbartonshire’s top five summer spectaculars, but within piping circles across Scotland – and far beyond – it

probably ranks higher still. Last year the event attracted 25,000 people and hundreds of musicians from far and wide, and this year was shaping up to be even more popular Set against the backdrop of Dumbarton Rock and Castle, the

Your ideas with our inspiration

Scottish Pipe Band Championships welcomes players and spectators from across the globe - More than 120 bands will attend the (completely free) event, which is organised by West Dunbartonshire Council and West Dunbartonshire Leisure Trust Events Team in conjunction with the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association. From a local perspective it’s a matter of pride that Dumbarton and District Pipe Band (which has a very ambitious agenda for youth training in the national instrument) is a conspicuous exemplar of the art – not just in successful competition results but in its crusading zeal on behalf of the great Highland war pipes.

own as a living embodiment of the country and its culture. Far from being old-fashioned, the pipes are probably more popular now than ever, as a new generation discovers it is heir to a tradition that is both unique and worth celebrating. The Loch Lomond Highland Games lived fully up to expectations, and Weirfest is turning into a newentry outdoor attraction in its own right, but for many this will have been the event of the summer. Meanwhile the season is not quite over for traditional events, as we’ve still the Cowal Highland Gathering (August 25-27) to look forward to. We’re advised: “The sound of 100 pipers playing in unison will stay with you forever” – and there’s all those heavyweight events and other traditional contests to enjoy too.

It maybe takes a great annual event of this kind to underline the fact that while the annual Military Tattoo in Edinburgh is a premier league tourism attraction there’s far more to the national instrument than the wellrehearsed manoeuvres on the castle esplanade would suggest ... and it’s at Levengrove Park that the massed pipes come into their

Of course it’s over the border in Argyll and Bute, but within easy range for a day out, and well worth the trip. For full details visit www.cowalgathering.com

an unforGettaBLe imaGe We’ve some sort of providence to thank for the stroke of luck that gave Kevin Murney the talent to transcend bad luck. The 48-year-old Dumbarton man suffers visual impairment, having lost the central vision in his left eye, and has also had injections to his right eye to save his sight. So when he won the annual Picture of the Year contest run by the council and West College Scotland there was more than the usual reason for celebration. It’s a shot of Dumbarton’s Old Bridge, as few of us have ever imagined it, showing fog rising from the water in a reflective setting that impressed the judges with its depth and framing. Now, having been on show in Dumbarton recently, it’s being exhibited this month in Alexandria library (August 6 – 20), and is worth seeing up close. Kevin wins £300 worth of camera equipment from sponsors Calumet and one day’s hands-

on experience with well-known local photographer Stewart Cunningham of Great Scot Photography.

Kevin said: “I am absolutely thrilled to win this competition as the standard of the shortlisted pictures was really high.

The two runner-up pictures were a unique image of the Maid of the Loch being bathed in the Northern Lights and a compelling aerial shot of Bowling Basin.

“I had never given it a thought to enter a competition until I saw this competition and I was encouraged to enter my work by my friend.” He says both the Calumet vouchers and the day with Stewart Cunningham are the best prizes he could have wished for. The images can still be viewed on WD Council’s Instagram page.

The shortlisted photos were up for public voting by people on the council’s Instagram page and were rated by the public more than 470 times.

FITNESS: Walk in The Park is a great outdoor fitness group that takes in some beautiful sights

The saying “it’s as easy as a walk in the park” perfectly sums up the autumn programme from a thriving outdoor group. Walk in the Park health walks use “the beautiful and nurturing surroundings” of Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park as the venue for their increasingly popular weekday meetings, and are keen for more local people to discover the benefits. Spokeswoman Fran Crumley said: “We are now one of the best examples of a successful health walk programme in Scotland. FITTED SPECIALIST

Everyone is welcome to join in, and the group usually enjoys a coffee and a chat together after the walk. All of its walks aim to be accessible and interesting for everyone and only take about 45 minutes, while the routes are deliberately chosen to be mainly flat, and with good walking surfaces.

One of the area’s most quietly successful music spectaculars has collected a magnificent donation of £2,000 for a local children’s cause. Jameston pub Fenton’s has been perfecting its summer musical festival for some years now, and has a cult following from across the area and far beyond.

was born, and this year the particular cause to benefit is Children’s Hospice Association Scotland, which runs nearby Robin House in Balloch.

As a grass-roots music phenomenon with a rootsy quality all of its own it is no ordinary series of pub music sessions, and offers a gutsy and good-hearted three-day programme of virtually non-stop entertainment – run by a bar at the very heart of its music-loving community.

CHAS’ representative Claire Benjamin was delighted to receive a giant cheque for £2,000 from the pub’s team leader Melissa Cameron.

Run in tandem with Kopparberg Fruit Lager, the event is hugely popular within the live music scene across West Dunbartonshire, with all taking part giving up their time to play Fenton’s has raised more than and help raise as much as possible £10,000 since the idea of turning the event into a charity fundraiser for CHAS.

Fenton’s Bar marketing manager Stephen Quinn said: “We’re very happy and pleased to be able to hand over this cheque to CHAS, as I know it will benefit children and their families who need the expert support and guidance CHAS gives to families at the most difficult of times. “A huge thank you to the customers and staff of Fenton’s, who helped make the festival a success through their hard work and kindness.” CHAS is the only charity in Scotland that provides vital hospice services for children and young people who have lifeshortening conditions. It offers care for the whole family at its two children’s hospices, Rachel House in Kinross, and Robin House.

DOn’T Be A scAM VicTiM Never mind the standard warnings about scams – the problem is so serious that all of us really need to be on our guard at all times. That is the sobering message from a scam awareness team Community Advertiser was speaking to in one of the area’s busiest supermarkets recently. They’re trying to get over the message that while the usual victims – the elderly and vulnerable – are still prime targets, virtually anyone can be “stung”. We were told: “Some of the worst cases involve young people desperate for a job. They have to apply via a phone number which turns out to be super-expensive, and are

comprehensively scammed. “In one case we know of a job seeker who lost £4,000, which for someone without work is obviously a disaster. Many more have been scammed but don’t want to come forward.” It gets worse, particularly where internet crime is involved, because the ruses used to get people to click on a link that will download the malware equivalent of the Black Death are getting ever more sophisticated, and anyone – from home user to company boss – can easily fall victim.

West Dunbartonshire Trading Standards and Citizens Advice Bureau are joining forces to warn about the tactics used by scammers, and Argyll and Bute have a similar scheme in operation.

Scams come in a variety of guises and we see new ones emerging all the time.

01436 402 010 07545 594 129 scratch2shine.co.uk

Joe McCormack, manager of West Dunbartonshire CAB said: “Scams come in a variety of guises and we see new ones emerging all the time. “Reporting suspicious offers and incidents of fraud is vital to getting scams closed down. If you think you’ve been contacted by a con artist or have been the victim of scam, seek advice and report it to the authorities.” If you have been scammed – or think you have - then report it to Trading Standards through Citizens Advice by calling 03454 04 05 06.

But the publicity for the show – now being filmed in the BBC’s Dumbarton studios – mentions that Glasgow locations will “also be used in the series ... which implies some of the action might be filmed on local streets.

If you see Jack, Victor, Boabby the Barman or Isa wandering down the High Street they’re probably on their way to work. The cast of Still Game enjoyed smash hit sell-out shows at the Hydro venue in Glasgow last year, but it’s been fully nine years since the famous senior citizens of Craiglang graced our screens – and now they’re back, and beavering away in Dumbarton. The town has been given the signal honour of hosting production of a new six-part season that will be compulsive

viewing for at least half the population when it hits our screens in a few month’s time. We’ve no information to suggest Naveed aims to open a minimarket in Alexandria, or whether Boabby the Barman has taken up boating at Balloch – or whether Jack and Victor are really closet Sons fans who sneak away from Glasgow for home games at Dumbarton.

In previous episodes the dynamic duo of Jack Jarvis and Victor McDade have travelled as far as the West Highlands and the Ayrshire coast, so there’s no reason why a Dumbarton location – with its stunning castle Rock – shouldn’t feature. Everything about the new series depends on the scripts, of course,

but the venture was off to a flyer from the start by managing to reassemble all the old crew – it couldn’t be the same without Isa (Jane McCarry), for example, or Paul Riley as Winston. Like any successful soap the comedic alchemy works to perfection because everyone knows the characters and how they interact with each other, so having a full set of favourites is close to a guarantee that the new series will be every bit as good – and as scatological – as before. Jack (Ford Kiernan) says of the local facilities: "The BBC

Dumbarton Studios are incredible and we're super chuffed to be back in the costumes and wigs again." The wigs and makeup are reputedly so convincing that (according to a trivia site) when the main characters were filming in public nobody could tell their real ages. Both Ford and Greg are said to have been engaged in spirited conversation by ladies of a certain age, while kitted out as Jack and Victor. Victor (Greg Hemphill) says the

initial nervousness at relaunching the TV version of the show was gone after the first ten minutes “as if we’d never been away”, while Jacqueline Sinclair, producer of the show, described the reunion and relaunch as “comedy history” and promised that viewers are in for a real treat. We won’t have that long to see whether the Clansman is the same minging dump as previously, or whether the banter in the bar is as pithily acerbic as ever ... or whether Isa’s uncannily forensic powers of deduction are up to scratch – Dumbarton style.

ProuD of his LuCkY sCar lives can be saved. The face of We Need Everybody is Gordon Hutchinson, 26, who underwent a transplant aged just 13 after being born with a congenital heart defect. SCAR: The face (and chest) of the organ donor campaign, Gordon Hutchinson, hopes to encourage more people to donate.

West Dunbartonshire residents are being urged to join the NHS Organ Donor Register in a new attempt to increase life-saving registrations. Last year in Scotland 35 people died waiting for a vital organ transplant, and for the 540 people currently listed for transplant, the wait goes on. The ‘We Need Everybody’ campaign shows people of all sorts baring – almost – all to show that anyone can be an organ donor.

Aileen Campbell, Minister for Public Health and Sport said: “The reality is that there are more people waiting for an organ transplant than there are suitable donors. “There are many reasons people haven’t joined the Register, such as thinking they’re too old, no one would want their organs, or they’ve simply not got round to it. “If you’ve made the decision that you want to donate your organs and haven’t yet joined the Register, I’d urge you to do it now. OUR team take on Rough Runner and barbed wire crawls. Some have dialled up the pain factor to excessive extremes, with ice baths and even tear gas! Not only do you have to be super fit to stand a chance of finishing the run, but also pretty nuts to want to do some of these 'challenges'! Our mission is to replace the pain of these events with pure fun, by bringing your favourite TV game shows to life. We'll give you the chance to dodge sweeper arms, bounce through big balls, challenge the Cyclone and take on the Travelator.”

Something special is happening in Edinburgh this August and it’s sure to create quite a wave. Never before has an event of this nature, with obstacles this grand and unique been brought to Scotland. And, not only is it a first but it’s completely different to all the other events out there.

Rough Runner is a new and unique breed of event. Everyone has done the 10k’s and half marathons, and some will have even done an obstacle race before. But not like this.

On the 6 th and 7 th of August Rough Runner will be bringing their obstacle course race to Hopetoun House Estate in Edinburgh. Now the legendary Travelator will be on the doorstep of all those living in Edinburgh.

A Rough Runner race will be tough, of course, but gratuitous pain won’t be found there. At a Rough Runner event there is no electrocution, no fire and burning, and no freezing! Instead Rough Runner tries to blend

endurance with cool and unique obstacles inspired by the game shows that everyone grew up loving – Takeshi’s Castle, Wipeout, Gladiator, Ninja Warrior and more. Most people sat watching those shows and thought, “If that was me I’d do so much better!” and now they all have the chance to prove it. As founder, Jonathan Geitner says: “We believe that the current obstacle course racing scene isn't appealing to enough people. So many events out there do the same thing: militarystyle obstacles like climbing walls, mud pits,

Ticket prices start at £45 and range depending on how close to the event tickets are purchased, whether individual or team tickets are purchased, and whether a 5km, 10km, or 15km run is selected. The event runs from 9am through to approximately 5pm. There are limited tickets remaining so hurry and get tickets before it’s too late! Choir neeDs neW BLooD

What's Up Doc? with Dr Nick Dunn

A well-known West Dunbartonshire choir is looking for new singers as it gets set to launch its new season.

This month:

Clydebank District Choir is looking to recruit new members to its well-established mixed voice chorus - particularly male voices - for the season starting on Tuesday, August 16. The choir meets every Tuesday in Morison Memorial Church hall on Dumbarton Road, Clydebank (beside the library) at 7.30pm.

However something we hope they won’t be sharing is infections – often easily transmitted by contact via the hands.

Its repertoire is broad, from popular classics to spirituals through to Scottish favourites, show tunes and contemporary songs. There are also special seasonal shows, and from around now the choir will be working towards Christmas, then spring concerts and any other concerts it may be asked to perform. It’s reckoned a great way of

exploring a love of music with like-minded choristers, with the opportunity to perform at a variety of special events. For anyone who is interested but hasn’t sung for a while who may wonder what it would be like to join the best way of learning about the choir is to pay them a visit. Anyone interested in finding out more is welcome to go along to the opening night on Tuesday, August 16 or call 07808 525810 for more details.

Common infections spread in this way includes viruses causing skin rashes, coughs or tummy upsets, bacterial infections such as impetigo and boils, and threadworms which are parasites. The warmer weather at this time of year also promotes spread

of infection, so now is a good time to remind children to wash their hands regularly. Hand-washing is recognised as one of the most effective ways of reducing infections worldwide and in hospitals and clinics people are reminded to wash their hands properly before every contact. We should encourage hand washing from an early age, especially before eating and before leaving the toilet, and hopefully have an infection-free start to the school year!

It sounds ludicrous on first reading – but there’s evidence to suggest Napoleon’s most famous Marshal came from … Fintry.

Fascinating stuff, perhaps, but is the supposed Scottish connection true? David Smith, education officer at Stirling’s Smith Museum will be reviewing the evidence in “Waterloo – a Stirlingshire mystery."

The forthcoming winter programme at Drymen and District Historical Society has many fascinating talks to look forward to, but the one that’s right out there on its own features the incredible theory that Michel Ney, “bravest of the brave” was a Fintry man who fell FINTRY MAN?: Michel foul of the establishment through Ney, Napoleon's his support or radical politics. It may sound like a Napoleonic version of “Elvis lives”, but the story is compelling. As if a Napoleonic marshal from Fintry wasn’t enough, he’ll also be exploring a conspiracy theory – that Ney’s firing squad death was faked, and that he was smuggled away to comfortable exile as a teacher in South Carolina, only finally admitting to his real identity on his deathbed at the age of 73. GREAT FILM: The Dressmaker (which stars Kate Winslet) is to be shown on Friday 2nd September

All the clubs that have been ‘on holiday’ are back with their new autumn programmes – and that includes some incredible movies. The Concord Cinema is a four-inone venture that offers you the choice of a regular movie, or of taking your pick from almostnew movies like The Dressmaker (2015) starring Kate Winslet to golden oldies such as Sunset Boulevard (1950) – or you might be a fan of musicals like Cabaret and Chicago. There’s also the weekly “look

back” programme, with tea and cake included in the price, so there really is something for everybody. The Dressmaker is on Friday, September 2 at 7.30pm, and is exactly what you’d expect of a high-quality production starring a big-name actress, and tells the tale of a glamorous woman who returns to her small town in rural

Australia with a sewing machine and a haute couture way of exacting revenge on the people who did her wrong. Described by one critic as “Clint Eastwood’s ‘Unforgiven’ with a sewing machine” it opened at the number one spot at Australian and New Zealand box offices, becoming the second-highest grossing Aussie film of 2015. It’s just one of five 2015 films which will be shown at the Concord between September and January 6 next year – look out for Youth, starring Michael Caine, Harvey Keitel and Rachel Weisz. The classic film club’s season kicks off with Moonstruck (1987) on September 16. It stars Cher and Nicholas Cage, and was described by one critic as “a movie that makes you want to sing 'Boheme' and walk in the moonlight and move to Brooklyn”. The common factor in all these programmes is that you get a big screen experience without the expense and hassle of legging it to a multiplex. HIGHLAND

STREET

JAZZ

SALSA

The Highland Fling, Sword Dance,, Reel, Sailor's Hornpipe and Irish Jig, Flora MacDonald’s Fancy, Scottish Lilt, Highland Laddie among other dances are redolent of Scottish culture. The competitive solo dances provide a colourful and complex spectacle . The Scottish Official Highland Dancing Association say: “Originating in rituals of various kinds, preparations for battle and celebrating after victory, until quite recently Highland Dancing was a key part of the physical training programmes for many of the Highland Regiments.”

Street Dance evolved, as its name suggests outside formal dance studios, now of course it has reached huge heights of popularity fuelled in part by some of the routines seen on TV talent shows. These impressive dancers exhibit how the human body accomplishes seemingly super-human leaps and bounds.. Demonstrating with props and high-energy dance segments, the dancers stretch or contract making their bodies to move in a way we marvel at. One for the young!

Jazz has become one of the most popular dance styles in recent years, mainly due to its popularity on television shows, movies and music videos.

If you dream of spinning around the dance floor on your partner's arm a la Jennifer Grey in Dirty Dancing but find you are actually somewhat closer to John Sergeant on Strictly , you may want to consider salsa dance classes.

Always fun and energetic, Jazz dancing is a form of dance that showcases a dancer's individual style and originality. Every jazz dancer interprets and executes moves and steps in their own way. This type of dancing is energetic and fun, consisting of unique moves, fancy footwork, big leaps and quick turns

The word salsa comes from the phrase 'echale salsita' which roughly translates as 'spice it up' and unsurprisingly Salsa has its roots in Cuba. Paul Young from Salsa UK,says: “Salsa is cool, fun, and easy to learn.”

Leven- Legal Matters grove with Gill Bowman This month: Park boost based in Cardross

BA LLB

CHILD CAR SAFETY

Dumbarton’s Levengrove Park is set to be transformed, thanks to a £2.8 million Lottery grant. The investment will allow the many historic features within the park to be restored to their former Victorian-era glory, in a scheme which includes building a new pavilion with cafe, and revamped play areas. Some of the work will include bringing Kilmahew Fountain back into working order, enhancing Shiers Well and St Serf’s Church, and recreating the original main entrance. Paths will also be upgraded and lights installed between the main entrance and pavilion, as part of the overall £3.7 million project.

Children are particularly vulnerable passengers in motor vehicles and accordingly there are strict, and rather complicated, regulations surrounding their in-car safety. The law requires that all children under 135cm in height, around 4ft 5in, or 12 years in age must use an appropriate restraint, with certain exceptions for unexpected journeys, taxis and buses.

Car seats must be EU approved and should have the required (E) label. All children under three years old must use a car seat, whether they are travelling in the front or back. In the event there

is no seatbelt to allow the appropriate seat to be fitted then the child is not able to travel in the vehicle. Again, there is the exceptionsof taxis; then the child should sit unrestrained in the rear. It is also important to be aware that you must not use a rear-facing child seat where a front airbag is fitted.

If you are in any doubt about the appropriate regulations relevant to your child you should consult www.gov.uk for further information. It is the driver’s legal responsibility to ensure that children are using the correct restraint. Failure to do so is a criminal offence and you could receive a fine of £500.

“I am thrilled to see this year’s awards raise such a fantastic amount for St Margaret of Scotland Hospice. CHARITY: Sister Rita Dawson and Lord Provost with the charity cheque

An annual awards ceremony for people who make the area a great place to live and work has raised £2,500 for charity. Guests at this year’s Provost’s Civic Awards donated over £1,000 for St Margarets of Scotland Hospice as part of a raffle held on the night, with the Provost’s Fund increasing the total to £2,500. St Margaret of Scotland Hospice offers end of life care for people with a wide range of life-limiting illnesses and complex medical needs, and includes the Edwina Bradley Day Hospice, community specialist palliative care,

outpatient and counselling services. The raffle included prizes from the Golden Jubilee Conference Hotel, the Boat House restaurant, Clyde Shopping Centre, Dalmuir Golf Course and the Radisson Blu Hotel. Provost Douglas McAllister said: “The Provost’s Civic Awards are an opportunity to recognise our local heroes, and it is one of my

“I must pass on my thanks to the businesses who provided the coveted raffle prizes and everyone who contributed to support the Hospice.” St Margaret of Scotland Hospice chief executive Sister Rita Dawson said: “We were absolutely delighted that the Hospice was chosen as the charity to benefit from the proceeds of the raffle at the Provost’s Civic Awards. “It is a wonderful event for a most deserving group of people from West Dunbartonshire. It was such a pleasure for all of us from the Hospice to be part of the evening, which recognises those who contribute so much to local communities. “We greatly appreciate the support we receive from Provost McAllister and all those who were there and gave so generously to help the Hospice.”

Household Tips I don’t like cricket. I love IT.

LONGER LASTING FLOWERS

Help your lovely fresh cut flowers to last longer, is to pop a copper penny into the vase of water along with a cube of sugar. It prevents bacteria growth, so your flowers last longer.

If you hear people at Balloch shop Loch Lomond News talking about cricket they don’t mean the wicket and stumps sort.

food fad ... we’ll just have to wait and see if they catch on. Meanwhile, there’s no dubiety about one of the Balloch store’s more conventional big sellers, and in any ice cream competition Loch Lomond News would easily be in the top three – as possibly thousands of customers over the summer will attest.

According to reports the latest innovation at this continually adventurous and eclectic shop is packets of actual crickets – insects – in a variety of flavours, just like crisps. Owner Andy Howell was apparently inspired by a TV programme about Aussie bush survival, and was intrigued by the notion of edible insects, which many oriental and African cookery styles treat as perfectly normal ingredients. But they’re a bit of a challenge to the average Scot who isn’t really tuned in to the concept, even if the contents do come nicely packaged in a snazzy bag, just like premium crisps. Possibly, like Andy, people who are fans of I’m a Celeb will remember all those episodes involving insect-eating challenges, and feel inspired to give crickets a go ... or then again

Besides actually dealing in news, the store has many unique strings to its bow, particularly when it comes to card collectables, and takes pride in getting hold of those hard-to-find specials that make all the difference.

they may just stick with boring old salt and vinegar crisps and forgo the pleasure. The cricket-crisps are supplied by the appropriately-named Grub, a UK food company that might just have discovered the latest trendy

hOlY BAT nighT, rOBin .. RSPB stands for the Royal Society for the Protection of…Bats, at least for a couple of special events this month. Booking is essential for the sessions on Saturday, August 27 and Sunday August 28, when there’s what’s reckoned the ideal opportunity to find out all about those flying Hallowe’en extras at close hand – and to learn why they’re protected by law. They have been (ouch) frequent flyers to Loch Lomond for possibly millennia, and your writer remembers (as a boy) the excitement caused when a bat managed to get itself trapped in the common room of Rowardennan Youth Hostel. We’re advised: “Bat detectors will be provided, but wear suitable outdoor clothing and bring a torch” – and while we’ve no idea what a bat detector looks like or how you use one it may be a lot of fun trying it out. One of the sessions runs from

BATS: The RSPB are holding a few events this month to promote bats.

7.30pm till 9.30pm, while the Sunday session is 9.30am to 11am – when the bats are presumably hanging upside down trying to grab some sleep. The morning session involves checking out a moth trap to see what has been netted overnight, and we’re warned to wear wellies as the walk is over very muddy ground. The venue is RSPB Loch Lomond, and throughout August in the days running up to Bat Night there are some more prosaic but nevertheless enjoyable country

walks on offer. With the holiday season fading we’re invited to enjoy the sights and sounds of summer. It involves wandering through wildflower meadows, watching butterflies and listening for visiting birds high up in the trees. It all sounds idyllic, but because it’s Scotland we’re again urged to wear wellies – you don’t want to leave a shoe behind in some glutinous bog. For full details visit the RSPB website at www.rspb.org.uk/ discoverandenjoynature/

Household Tips

A THRIFTY WATERING CAN Summer's here and if we're lucky that means that we'll actually get some sun. Just like humans, your plants need to stay hydrated to stay alive but some of us aren't made of money to waste on expensive watering cans. Fear not. Get an empty bottle of milk, poke a load of holes in the lid, fill it with water and you're good to go.

eXPress trains Cut for Commuters Scotrail says a timetable which is ‘broadly the same’ as that brought in for the Queen Street tunnel works will apply when that project finishes on August 8. It means the additional rush hour limited stop services will be cut. A spokesperson said: “There will be some changes to the station ‘calls’ on the route to and from Edinburgh, which should only affect those travelling beyond Glasgow city centre. “We’ve found this allows us to run a more robust and reliable service throughout the day on this route. “Regrettably, this means the previous additional peak trains – the 07:59 Helensburgh Central to Airdrie and the 17:14 Bellgrove to Helensburgh Central services – that operated before 20 March will not be reinstated.”

Scotrail says that the number of carriages on some trains will be cut. When the tunnel re-opens, six trains will be taken out of service for refurbishment, resulting in carriages being

This month: STAYING SOCIALLY ACTIVE Finding ways to stay young at heart, stimulated, and busy is very important for seniors. Believe it or not, there are proven health benefits of social interaction in older adults including lower blood pressure and reduced risk for mental health issues such as depression. On the other hand, social isolation carries real risks. Some of these risks are feelings of loneliness and depression, high blood pressure and decline in mobility. This is a list of activities and groups suitable for older adults in Bearsden and Milngavie and we will be printing and distributing our latest version in the local community from September
