Skate Park triumph for Youth Cafe

A project that was long in the planning and requiring huge fundraising efforts recently reached its happy conclusion with the opening of Cove’s skate park. It was sponsored by the Cove and Kilcreggan Youth Cafe, and as Chairperson Susie Will said at the opening: “This has taken 4 of the 5 years that we have been operating. I would like to thank all the supporters we have had through the years. A Youth Cafe is something that every community should have, like a creche, or a church, or a library. I feel this very strongly, when I

see the difference we have made to some young people's lives it brings home how important this really is.” The skatepark was built on the disused tennis courts off Church Road and much of the funding came from the Armed Forces Community Covenant Grant Scheme. Susie said: “There is an etiquette

attached to skating, being aware of the movement of others, leaving no litter or glass, very frowned upon by skateboarders as of course this selfish behaviour can lead to accidents. Taking turns to allow for the freedom of movement. All skills we need throughout our entire lives.” The opening was a day for heartfelt thankyous. Several local people were name checked, former councillor Danny Kelly for helping set things up initially. Cllrs George Freeman and Maurice Corry, Maurice helped secure a major part of the

funding through the community covenant grant. Morevain Martin, Argyll Voluntary Action, Audrey Baird and her Third sector Team, for micro managing skills. Alison McIlroy of Argyll and Bute Council for her guidance and continuing support. Craigrownie Park Association for organising the extravaganza opening day and “Titch” who runs the pub in Kilcreggan with Rita Turner who ran fundraising nights. Susie adds: “Together we have created a local hub. The youth cafe is open two nights a week hopefully more in the future as our numbers increase we may have to split age groups. We have a trained youth worker without whom we would not be tenable, he is fantastic Mr John Agnew, his daughter Kaleigh and sports coach Dean. Both volunteers. They have made The Youth Cafe successful.” The Cafe is looking for new committee members, not a huge commitment. Find out more at the AGM in early August. think. Recycling saves space in your green bin and saves money for council services. For every tonne of waste we put to landfill we have to pay a tax of around £80.

Councillor Ellen Morton, Policy Lead for Roads and Amenity Services, said: “Argyll and Bute Council is totally committed to recycling and despite our drastically reduced funding, we have protected recycling services.

“Another good way to recycle and save space in your bin is home composting. Again it’s easy to do, and is a good way to reuse your garden and uncooked vegetable waste. There is lots of helpful advice on home composting on our website at: www.argyll-bute.gov.uk/ content/home-compostingadvice”

“ We’re moving to the new system for your green (general waste) bin, collecting it every three weeks. We have seen a sharp rise in recycling since we introduced the blue bin collection service for most of the area last year, but even more can be done. There are still a lot of things people put in their green bin which could easily go in the blue bin. “You can recycle more than you

PLAYERS WELCOME: The Helensburgh Orchestral Society are looking for some new talent

Helensburgh is a hotbed of musical talent and nowhere more so than in the ranks of the Helensburgh Orchestral Society, an excellent amateur orchestra, now looking for new players. The orchestra plays a range of classical and modern music under the baton of Robert Baxter. Anita Gaw from the orchestra committee tells us: “We're a friendly bunch of people of all ages from secondary school to retired, who always welcome new members. “At the moment we're particularly looking for violinists

but if you play violin, viola, cello, double bass, French horn or tenor trombone to Grade 5 standard or equivalent and are interested in joining, we'd love to hear from you.” The Orchestra meets once a week at the Victoria Halls, Helensburgh from September through to June and usually performs three concerts per year. Preparations are well underway for Helensburgh Summer Festival. The Festival date was changed from its usual June spot to avoid a clash with other local events. This year the festival is being held on August 13, the day of the monthly market and a wide range of interesting stalls have

been lined up to provide a full shopping experience for visitors. Final plans were still underway at time of writing but past experience indicates that a market featuring up to 50 stalls will be running in the Square on the Saturday from 10am until 4pm and it will feature gifts and goodies as well as delicious hot street food. On the other side of Colquhoun Square there will be a number of fun stalls and side shows aimed

at the younger members of the public including children's rides and a bouncy castle is planned too. There are plans for a display of emergency vehicles at the pierhead and for other attractions along the new esplanade. Down on the seafront the Army Cadets from Arrochar will stage some really exciting challenges and displays of equipment while for the less energetic a small jazz festival will be running with music in each corner of the Square.

HAC says: ”The Annual Exhibition will take place from 6th to 13th August at the Victoria Halls, Sinclair Street, Helensburgh. Quite rightfully, it can claim to be a significant event of the summer scene in Scotland where both professional and talented amateurs present their work of the past year. In order to make the exhibition available to everyone, entry is free.

“Once again this year, members have produced artwork of varying mediums and put them on display for the benefit of the community. The artwork is varied with paintings in oils, acrylics, watercolours and mixed media together with crafts, ceramics, jewellery and other materials. It does demonstrate a variety of local talent and the Club regularly attracts new members who provide new techniques and styles which bring fresh displays to the exhibition.”

AUGUST 2016 - Local News

Society helps reveal our story The North Clyde Archaeological Society is organising an excursion to the great Roman Fort of Ardoch and the Pictish sculpture collection at Meigle this month. Both of these are sites of major importance in the story of Scotland. The excursion is one of several the Society organises from Helensburgh. NCAS was formed in the summer of 2013. Tam Ward and Sandra Kelly from the Biggar Archaeology Group held a series of public meetings in the Victoria Halls Helensburgh to gauge public support to form an archaeological group in the area. From this meeting a steering group was formed to plan ideas and members of a committee were elected. A first year programme for excursions and lectures was developed and they have continued with great success since. All the details are available on their website where you can also find interesting pictures and

stories about previous excursions and get a good idea of what the Society is all about. The organisers say that people are welcome to come to lectures or excursions before committing to membership - which only costs £20 or £10 concessions. They add that this friendly group will help you enjoy learning about local archaeology, understand fieldwork excavation and recording plus there’s a programme of lectures from various guest speakers.

What's Up Doc? with Dr Nick Dunn This month:

INFECTIONS - WASH YOUR HANDs

As pupils return to school this month it will be time for them to meet up again and share stories from their holidays! However something we hope they won’t be sharing is infections – often easily transmitted by contact via the hands. Common infections spread in this way includes viruses causing skin rashes, coughs or tummy upsets, bacterial infections such as impetigo and boils, and threadworms which are parasites. The warmer weather at this time of year also promotes spread

of infection, so now is a good time to remind children to wash their hands regularly. Hand-washing is recognised as one of the most effective ways of reducing infections worldwide and in hospitals and clinics people are reminded to wash their hands properly before every contact. We should encourage hand washing from an early age, especially before eating and before leaving the toilet, and hopefully have an infection-free start to the school year!

Dance Feature - AUGUST 2016

STREET

JAZZ

SALSA

Street Dance evolved, as its name suggests outside formal dance studios, now of course it has reached huge heights of popularity fuelled in part by some of the routines seen on TV talent shows. These impressive dancers exhibit how the human body accomplishes seemingly super-human leaps and bounds.. Demonstrating with props and high-energy dance segments, the dancers stretch or contract making their bodies to move in a way we marvel at. One for the young!

Jazz has become one of the most popular dance styles in recent years, mainly due to its popularity on television shows, movies and music videos.

If you dream of spinning around the dance floor on your partner's arm a la Jennifer Grey in Dirty Dancing but find you are actually somewhat closer to John Sergeant on Strictly , you may want to consider salsa dance classes.

Always fun and energetic, Jazz dancing is a form of dance that showcases a dancer's individual style and originality. Every jazz dancer interprets and executes moves and steps in their own way. This type of dancing is energetic and fun, consisting of unique moves, fancy footwork, big leaps and quick turns

The word salsa comes from the phrase 'echale salsita' which roughly translates as 'spice it up' and unsurprisingly Salsa has its roots in Cuba. Paul Young from Salsa UK,says: “Salsa is cool, fun, and easy to learn.” SIAN WINSTANLEY

Legal Matters

A quick idea to help your lovely fresh cut flowers to last longer, is to pop a copper penny into the vase of water along with a cube of sugar. The idea is that the copper from the penny acts like a acidifier so it prevents bacteria growth, so your flowers last longer.

Children are particularly vulnerable passengers in motor vehicles and accordingly there are strict, and rather complicated, regulations surrounding their in-car safety. The law requires that all children under 135cm in height, around 4ft 5in, or 12 years in age must use an appropriate restraint, with certain exceptions for unexpected journeys, taxis and buses. Car seats must be EU approved and should have the required (E) label. All children under three years old must use a car seat, whether they are traveling in the front or back. In the event there

is no seatbelt to allow the appropriate seat to be fitted then the child is not able to travel in the vehicle. Again, there is the exceptions of taxis; then the child should sit unrestrained in the rear. It is also important to be aware that you must not use a rear-facing child seats where a front airbag is fitted. If you are in any doubt about the appropriate regulations relevant to your child you should consult www.gov.uk for further information. It is the driver’s legal responsibility to ensure that children are using the correct restraint. Failure to do so is a criminal offence and you could receive a fine of £500.

His outstanding victory, which is his second Grand Slam triumph, earned Reid high praise from fellow Scottish tennis hero Andy Murray who also celebrated his second Grand Slam title on the same day.

Gordon said: “I had so many people there supporting me which was just amazing. I always love playing in front of a big crowd, but knowing that lots of the people there are there to cheer you on is fantastic.

The singles was Reid’s second Wimbledon title. He also clinched the doubles with Alfie Hewett.

More than 50 of the 24-yearold’s pals cheered him on as he became the first ever men’s wheelchair tennis champion. The crowd were a talking point at the tournament as they donned the same headbands as the world number three player to show their support.

Piping Convenor Colina Helen Campbell with Eric Wallace, President of Helensburgh Clan Colquhoun Pipe Band at the presentation platform

GUTTER CLEARING

The Bicentenary Pipe Band Championships held recently had more bands and dancers than ever before, including two juvenile pipe bands from Australia who won a total of five trophies. The Brisbane Boys College Pipe Band also joined Helensburgh Clan Colquhoun Pipe Band, highland dancers and VIP's for the opening parade. On behalf of the Bicentenary Pipe

Band Championships Committee, the chieftain also presented commemorative plaques to the two Australian pipe bands. They were so impressed they want to return next year.

The BPC Committee had to double their fundraising efforts this year as Argyll & Bute Council reduced their Events Grant by £1,000 and intend to cut it by a further 20% in each future year, as part of cost cutting exercises. Piping Convenor Colina Helen Campbell said: “With such a loss in income the championships are at serious risk of folding which would leave a huge gap in the events calendar for Helensburgh with a loss of visitors to the town and the loss of a golden opportunity for young people to become involved in their traditional Scottish culture through pipe bands and highland dancing. If you are interested in offering sponsorship, volunteering or joining our committee please call CH Campbell on 07710427535.”

Household Tips

A Thrifty Watering Can Summer's here and if we're lucky that means that we'll actually get some sun. Just like humans, your plants need to stay hydrated to stay alive but some of us aren't made of money to waste on expensive watering cans. Fear not. Get an empty bottle of milk, poke a load of holes in the lid, fill it with water and you're good to go.

Funding bid for young carers The organisation that looks after unpaid carers in our community needs to raise at least £25,000 to carry on its work with young carers now grant aid has ended. Helensburgh and Lomond Carers SCIO is in regular contact with over 800 local carers. It provides advice, training, short respite breaks, de-stressing therapies,a befriending service and a range of social activities for carers. There are also special programmes to help young carers with their developmental and educational needs. The organisation carries its work out on behalf of Argyll & Bute Council and NHS Highland. They provide some of their funding. Otherwise Helensburgh and Lomond Carers relies on donations, fundraising events, volunteers, and above all grants from charities for particular activities. Sir William Rae, their Chairperson said: “ In the last five years we have secured over £500,000 of these grants, all of which have benefited local carers. Our work

with young carers was funded by a grant to set up programmes for them. That grant has now ended and continuation of these programmes presents a funding challenge.” He added: “ Everybody knows a carer - a parent with an autistic child, a young person with a parent, brother or sister, who needs support - and everybody knows that being a carer is demanding, stressful and time-consuming. To be able to fund this work properly and have the resources to apply for and secure grant funding in future we need to strengthen our funding base.” The target for the campaign is £25,000. Helensburgh and Lomond Carers SCIO is appealing for people to become supporters by setting up
