rio SiLVer for Katherine
FANTASTIC SUCCESS: Katherine Grainger (right) and team mate Vicky Thornley proudly showing off their medals
Local people will have been delighted to witness the Olympics 2016 success of former Bearsden Academy pupil Katherine Grainger. The 40-year-old rower, who came out of retirement to compete in Rio last month, won silver in the women’s double sculls with Vicky Thornley. The final sculls race was a nailbiting race. The British pair battled all the way down the course with the Polish favourites only to be outdone in the last
metres of the race. Katherine said of the race and their early lead: “I don’t think you ever feel like you are going to win but we were ahead and it felt good and then you come down very quickly. It was certainly a dramatic race”. Vicky added: “It was a really great race from us and a silver
medal is so nice, I think”. The Rio 2016 silver takes Katherine’s total Olympian medals haul to five – and to claim the title as Britain’s most decorated female Olympian. She won Olympic gold at London 2012 and three other silver medals across three Games, including Sydney in 2000, Athens in 2004 and Beijing in 2008. Katherine has six world championships titles. The athlete attended Mosshead PS and the academy before going to Edinburgh University where she started rowing after picking up a leaflet about the sport during Freshers’ Week. She was part of a crew that won the Universities title, which led to selection for Scotland at 19. She was part of the British rowing team trials for the '92 Olympics and her career led from there. After apparently retiring from rowing after the last Olympics, Katherine announced earlier this year that she planned to return to full-time training for the Rio 2016 Olympics. She lives in London and Edinburgh, where her family is now based.
DISAPPOINTMENT FOR BETH Another Bearsden athlete, Beth Potter, competed in Rio. The 24-yearold, who also attended the academy, finished 34th in the women’s 10,000m. A message on Twitter revealed: “Disappointed with a sub par performance due to a stomach bug and gutted I didn't have my usual fight but I'll be back for sure.”

A local ukulele group is delighted to be celebrating its first anniversary this month and is keen to welcome new members. The group organiser Bill Davis says: “It was thanks to an article in the Bearsden & Milngavie Community Magazine last year that our ukulele group was first formed. “I had hoped there would be some keen players in the local communities and that has proved to be the case. We now have a

regular group of players that meet every two weeks.” The group of two ladies and six men have built up a repertoire of almost 70 songs and they are now keen to attract more enthusiastic players to join in. Plans are also afoot to find a permanent meeting venue and a beginners’ class if there is
enough interest. One of the players Donald Wallace says: “At the moment, the group rotates their gettogethers around each other’s homes. We hope that if we can find a set venue then we will be able to expand to include more players.” At each session, members submit their choice of songs, from popular songs through to folk, country and western, jazz and blues. Donald says: “The emphasis for the group is to have fun learning the ukulele and the new songs. Our evenings are very informal, friendly and thoroughly enjoyable. “Bill is a very enthusiastic and motivating player and this has been a big part of the success of the group so far. “However, we are a rather mature group and we would really like to have new members across a wider age spectrum. Perhaps, we might even develop into a B&M Ukulele Club.” If you would like to find out more please email Bill at wom.davis@ ntlworld.com

YoUr green DreaM‌ Local residents are being urged not to miss their opportunity to have their say about a greener future for East Dunbartonshire.
It maps connected green areas in East Dunbartonshire and proposes improvements that will deliver benefits for biodiversity, access, transport, economic development, flood management, land use planning and health promotion. The final date for comments on the drafts is September 12. Paper copies are available in libraries, Community Hubs across the region and the council offices at Southbank Marina HQ, Southbank House and Broomhill Depot. Email comments to sustainability@eastdunbarton.gov. uk or write to the Sustainability Policy Team, Southbank House, Southbank Business Park, Kirkintilloch, G66 1XQ. You can also view them at www.eastdunbarton.gov. uk/council/consultations and complete an on-line comments form.
Two important draft documents, the Draft Local Biodiversity Action Plan (LBAP) and the Draft Green Network Strategy, were launched by East Dunbartonshire Council last month with a six-week public consultation period. The documents show how the natural environment underpins our social and economic well-being and strengthens the council’s commitment to sustainability. The Draft LBAP, prepared by the East Dunbartonshire Local Biodiversity Partnership, illustrates how crucial the natural environment is to the goods and services that we depend on and
sets out how the council and its partners will protect and enhance local ecosystems. The Draft Green Network Strategy, led by the council in partnership with the Glasgow & Clyde Valley Green Network Partnership, is the first of its kind in Scotland.
Call the team on 0141 578 8531 to discuss further.

The two-week judging tour for the competition kicked off on August 1 and will see volunteer judges visiting communities across Scotland to find the winning groups and the most beautiful local environments.

Milngavie in Bloom will find out this month if they have been successful in gaining an award in the Medium Towns category. Julia Muir, a keen Milngavie in Bloom volunteer, says: “Our group’s volunteers have worked with people from the local Ramblers group to make the paths at the start of the famous West Highland Way a lot more attractive. “The beds have been progressing for a while and we’re delighted with how they are looking. It’s rewarding as a volunteer to have passers-by commenting on how good they are.” Douglas Cameron, Chairman of Milngavie in Bloom, says: “It is a privilege to be the chairman of such a dedicated and knowledgeable group of residents who, like me, appreciate living in such a wonderful location.” See www. milngavieinbloom.webplus.net

Organisers of a new monthly trail running event want to encourage more people to discover the joys of heading off-road. Ryan Scott and his fiancée Jo Cowper have launched Sunday social trail running sessions at Mugdock Park. The outings are free and extend to around 5km at a gentle pace, although runners can go faster
and further if they wish. Ryan says: “The purpose of the social runs is to create a community of people who like trail running and to make it as accessible as possible to all sorts of people.
“The runs cater for faster runners as well as people new to running off-road, or people who want to build up to their first trail race. “We think that trail running is for everyone and it should be fun and sociable. We're excited to see how these could grow and evolve, and if we can gather more people together regularly for sessions that offer longer distances, faster speeds and more challenging runs. “We end the sessions with a postrun coffee and natter at a park café.” The Sunday runners meet at 10am. The outings explore different routes around the park and into Craigallian Woods. Ryan adds: “Some of the trials can be muddy and wet so runners should wear appropriate trainers. We think it’s great fun running in the mud, though!”Runners are asked to register at www.eventbrite.co.uk “TrailFest2 September Social Run” Ryan says: “Runners at our social trial running sessions will get first hand up-dates on the trail running festival.” Also see Facebook: Glasgow Trail Fest.

With a motto of “Football For All”, the multi-award winning club has further expanded its programme for 2016 and 2017 with new Age Groups sessions for children born in the years 2010, 2011 and 2012; two more girls’ sections; and a football after school class and league for all local primary schools. This allows each group, whether strings or wind, to spend more time playing music written for their instruments, so they can enhance their particular skills. “We’ve allowed the children more choice as to when they continue into other groups.” NEW BRASS: The Bearsden & Milngavie Youth Orchestra are appealing for more brass players to join them
Bearsden and Milngavie Youth Orchestra is calling out for more brass players of all ages as they look forward to their new term. Susan McEwan, one of the organising volunteers, says: “The orchestra is thriving but we would really like to have more brass players come along to our weekly sessions to augment the growing Wind Band. BMYO, which meets at Douglas Academy, has also introduced a

As a progression, the older members, from both the Concert Orchestra and the Wind Band, come together as part of the Symphony Orchestra. They play full orchestral pieces and have the opportunity to enter a Concerto Competition, to play solo at BMYO’s Easter Concert. BMYO meets on Thursdays from 7pm to 8.30pm and welcomes musicians aged eight and over who can play at Grade 1 level or above. BMYO play two concerts each year. WHY COME IN AND HAVE A RUNNING SCREENING?
EVELYN MCGEE
Having honed her skills in New Zealand working with elite athletes including the All Blacks, limb injury specialist Evelyn is our expert in the management of running injuries. She understands the effect injury has on a runners musculoskeletal and mental health, and is passionate about preventing them in the first place.
Running is a skill we learn from a very young age and is built into our DNA. It comes about from development of man, when a fight or flight response was required to overcome a danger. However, people participate in running now for both fitness and leisure, and like other leisure time activities such as golf and tennis, running skill varies and can be improved with coaching and training. Research shows running injuries occur in up to 80% who participate each year, and a number of factors require

Anyone, who is thinking about taking up running as an activity is likely to benefit from a screening and analysis to reduce their injury risk and ensure that running continues to be enjoyable. identify any areas of which lack flexibility or which are weak – the presence of these impairments often lead to injuries during running. Following the screening, we will video your running technique on the treadmill, allowing us to identify any modifications we can make to your technique, to also help minimise your risk of injury, and in some cases improve you performance. At the conclusion of the screening we will make recommendations and introduce some strength exercises to help make the adaptations to your running technique and also address any of variations we have found.

haVe a Share in the fair
with Dr Nick Dunn
This month: THE OLYMPIC LEGACY
This month will see the launch of a Milngavie fair that aims to attract more people to local clubs and societies. Milngavie Community Development Trust is behind the Milngavie Fair of Clubs and Societies, taking place on September 10 in the Town Hall, from 11am to 4pm. Wilson Blakey, one of the organisers, says: “There are more than 100 organisations in Milngavie and they represent a wide range of interests, including culture, art, music and crafts, as well as those that are focused on hobbies, past times, sports, charities and learning.
interested clubs and societies. The public can attend the fair to find out more about the groups and to enquire about joining.
“The fair is a way to help match up societies that are looking for members with people who are looking to get involved in something, even if they don’t quite know it yet!”
“We hope the fair will be instrumental in bringing more people in the community together though various groups.”
The fair will feature stalls for

Sometimes it’s not the silence that’s golden
This summer has seen huge successes at the Olympics by UK athletes, with sports as diverse as golf, tennis, rowing, gymnastics and cycling. Witnessing the rise of individuals such as our own Andy Murray, who has displayed incredible resilience and determination to reach the pinnacle of his sport by becoming a double gold medal winner, can be inspirational. Many people are now asking what these successes mean for ordinary people, as the financial support from the country for the Olympics has been considerable. I believe we can draw two main lessons
from it. Firstly I hope that this inspires people to get involved in sport at any level, which helps increase exercise levels in turn protecting against problems including heart disease, stroke and diabetes, lung disease, anxiety and depression. Secondly it shows what can be done when we set ourselves a target and work towards it, accepting there will be some failures along the way. Targets such as stopping smoking, losing weight or stopping drinking are examples but there may be others. We may not win gold medals, but can improve our health and get the best out of life!

The skiers, who are aged eight to 16 and are part of the club’s Race and Development team,

Don't think secondhand means second-rate – Kate Moss, Scarlet Johansson and Lara Stone all sport vintage engagement rings on their fingers - says moneysavingexpert.com You can find some real gems in vintage and antique shops. It's also worth hunting on eBay, though read sellers' feedback carefully and ask lots of questions (more help in Ebay Buying). Experts say Fridays or Sundays can cut the cost of the reception venue by up to half - Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays by even more. Major savings are also possible on winter weddings due to fewer bookings. If a winter wedding is planned, the opportunity for outdoor pictures is likely to be limited, so this may swing the decision towards a venue with a deluxe interior, including dramatic features such as a sweeping staircase, feature wall or elegant fireplace. These will provide a lovely backdrop for pictures.

RAMBLERS SET Legal Matters FOR HERITAGE with Gill Bowman This month: CHILDREN’S HEARINGS TOUR BA LLB
Bearsden & Milngavie Ramblers have organised a trip to the Fairfield Heritage Centre in Glasgow this month. The outing is on September 13 and will meet at the Fairfield Govan Offices on Govan Road at 1pm for a one-hour guided tour. For 100 years, Govan was the centre of shipbuilding on the Clyde. Some of the world’s finest liners, steamships and naval vessels were designed and launched from here. The museum offers a fascinating insight into this once thriving industry. Entry is free but a suggested donation of £3 should be brought on the day. Find out more about the B&M Ramblers at bearsdenandmilngavieramblers.org.uk
The function of the Children’s Hearing system is to protect children and young people from risk of harm and provide supervision for those in need. The Hearing members can make certain decisions for legal steps to be taken to help these children, including to determine where a child should live. These steps may be taken because the children themselves have committed a crime or there are concerns that a parent is struggling to meet the child’s needs appropriately. The decisions made at a Children’s Hearing can have a huge impact on a child and their family and can
ultimately interfere with their Human Rights, particularly respect for family life. Many people do not appreciate the consequences Children’s Hearings and Social Work Referral cases can have on them and are also unaware that they have the right to have their solicitor attend the hearing with them. Legal Aid may be available to the parents and children to assist with this. There are certain circumstances where Legal Aid is automatically available to the child. It is important that you contact your solicitor for further advice if you have any concerns regarding your child and a referral to the Children’s Reporter.

BRIDGE: Bridge is a great game that is enjoyed by many people all over the country so get involved.
When Peter Edmond decided to launch bridge classes in Bearsden he turned to the Community Magazine to tell people about it. That was two years ago and Peter reports that his classes have gone from strength to strength with a “good regular attendance”. Now, as the classes restart after the summer break on Monday September 5, Peter is keen to

Peter believes that it is essential to have an welcome more new members. insight into how the Bridge cards Classes are at Milngavie Town Hall work before any understanding of the bidding can be achieved. and take place every Monday at He says: “To help newcomers to 4pm for beginners and 5.30pm understand the game of Bridge for improvers, while Milngavie we start our beginner classes with and Bearsden Bridge Club meet Minibridge. This is a game that at 7.15pm.
can be played by anyone, of any age.” The Minibridge classes run for the first eight weeks and then the official ACOL system of bidding is introduced to the classes in early 2017. The improvers’ classes attract around 20 players each week. Peter says: “We’ve had a great season in the improvers’ class.” People who wish to take up Bridge more seriously should be prepared for a little homework each week in preparation for the next lesson. Peter says: “I tell the people in the improvers’ class it’s a little bit like going back to school, but in a fun way. Others, who simply wish to see what Bridge is all about are also very welcome.” There is no age limit for the classes and the only prerequisite for beginners is an ability to add up to 40, although a knowledge of the four suits and how trumps work would be a slight advantage. Peter can be contacted on pfe263@gmail.com or tel: 0141 563 8223.

This month: WHAT'S ON WHERE It’s been a busy few months at Home Instead. In addition to relocating our main office to Milngavie Town Centre we have been busy researching activities and groups targeted to older adults. We were amazed to discover that there are almost 100 activities in the Bearsden and Milngavie communities which are suitable for seniors in our community and we have listed these in our What’s on Where (WOW) Guide for Older Adults. There is something for everyone in the WOW Guide. For those who wish to socialise whilst enjoying a bite to eat we list a number of weekly coffee mornings, afternoon teas and subsidised lunch clubs which take place in local churches and community centres. For the more sporty the WOW Guide lists gentle exercise classes
and swimming, walking and dancing groups. There are arts and crafts groups, chess and bridge clubs, choirs, reading groups and book clubs in our libraries and a plethora of activities run by Alzheimer’s Scotland and for family carers we list a number of activities and cafes run by Carer’s Link. All this information is presented in a handy Wallchart format which we will be distributing over the next few weeks. Also look out for copies in community centres, libraries and doctor’s surgeries. Alternatively if you would like a copy posted to you please call our office on the number below.

The annual Scottish Doors Open Day will offer free access to a range of interesting buildings in the local area this month. Doors Open Day is Scotland’s largest free annual architectural event. Now in its 26th year, the weekend-long event allows public access to buildings that are normally closed to the public or that usually have an entrance charge. It will be the 18th year that East Dunbartonshire has taken part in Scottish Doors Open Days and the focus this year is on the VisitScotland nominated Year of Innovation, Architecture and Design. A number of new venues are
open this year, as well as some long-standing contributors. Almost a dozen buildings will open their doors to the public on September 10 and 11 in East Dunbartonshire. In Milngavie, you can visit The Glasgow Academy, formerly Atholl Preparatory School, on Mugdock Road, on the Saturday from 10am to 4pm. Also on the Saturday and in Milngavie there is a chance to see inside Douglas Academy, from 10am to 1pm, and Milngavie

TREASURE HUNTERS: Local runners took part in a charity fundrasing treaure hunt
More than 30 local runners had fun taking part in a specially created fund-raising treasure hunt at the Milngavie Reservoirs last month. Dawn Hunter, a member of the popular Jog Scotland Milngavie, set the 5km treasure hunt, which included the “discovery” of different exercises, such as burpees and hill running repetitions. She explains: “Instead of the traditional treasure to find, I organised the event so that the teams of runners did different

It turned out to be a lot of fun for everyone who took part.” The runners were also invited to make donations to the chosen charity, Crohn's and Colitis UK, and generously gave more than £100. The idea for the charity event came about when Dawn, of

Milngavie, and her Bearsden friend Kay Hunter met Katie Gibb, who is a Miss Scotland finalist. They ran in Katie’s fund-raising 5k in Maryhill earlier in the summer. Katie, also from Milngavie, has chosen Crohn's & Colitis UK as her Miss Scotland “Beauty With A Purpose” campaign and aims to raise funds and awareness of bowel disease. Dawn says: “When I ran in Katie’s 5k in Maryhill and got chatting to her, I decided I’d like to help her further. With Kay’s help, we decided to do the 5k treasure hunt in Milngavie. “It was great to see so many enthusiastic people taking part and also to be able to raise money for a good cause.” Afterwards, the runners, mostly from the Jog Scotland Milngavie group, enjoyed home-baked cakes and truffles, also supplied by Dawn and another runner Claire Rigg. Katie was delighted with the fund-raiser. She said: “Thank you to everyone who has supported me. It is truly appreciated.” See www.justgiving.com/fundraising/ katiegibb

The organisers are also very grateful for the many volunteers. Michelle says: “The gala day couldn't go ahead without a kind-hearted crew of volunteers helping out on the day. To find out more see the Westerton Gala Day Facebook page or email westertongaladay@gmail.com.
