AWARDS REMEMBER TRAGIC TEEN The iLove Clarkston Community Awards honored Clarkston teenager Kyle Bremner by changing the name of one of their awards
reading the story of someone very special. “Kyle Bremner had been nominated by friends, family, teachers and many more members of the Clarkston community. “It was clear his story had touched a lot of people. We decided to change the name of the accolade to the Clarkston Young Person of the Year Award.”
The heartrending story of a Clarkston teenager who died of meningitis prompted a community awards to make a lastminute name change to an accolade. Now Kyle Bremner’s name will be remembered by The Kyle Bremner Award for Young Person of the Year at the I Love Clarkston Community Awards. The newly named award, sponsored by Swanson Sports, was won by Abby Turnbull. The local community awards were set up by Clarkston’s Business Improvement District (BID) and sponsored by East Renfrewshire Council.
The aim of the awards is to celebrate great individuals, organisations and businesses in the Clarkston area with seven main category winners and runners-up. In addition, a Heart of Clarkston Award was launched. Andy Dunlop, of I Love Clarkston, said: “During the nomination process we saw an influx of nominations – more than 100 – for one person in particular. Upon reading these, we knew we were
Kyle died aged 14 in December 2017 due to a rare form of meningitis. His mum Jen had passed away in October 2015 after being diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. During the presentations at the Redhurst Hotel in Giffnock last month, Kyle’s gran, Eleanor Dale, collected the Heart of Clarkston Award posthumously for the youngster. Other awards were handed out to Inspirational Leader winner Claire Murray, of Anytime Fitness; Customer Service Star winner Pamela Coulter, of Lloyds
Pharmacy; Community Group of the Year winner Carolside Sports Club; National Business of the Year, as voted for by members of the public, winner Anytime Fitness; Independent Business of the Year, winner Distinction Health & Beauty; and Clarkston Community Champion Iain Winters, who is Carolside Primary School’s lollipop man. A raffle at the event raised £750, which was donated to Meningitis Now. After the ceremony, BID Chair John Paul Reilly said: “We’re very happy to see how well the night has gone. We’re committed to this becoming an annual event.”

Two pupils from St Ninian’s High School in Giffnock took centre stage to deliver a presentation about living with allergies. Martha McMahon, 12, of Newton Mearns who has an allergy to peanuts, and Giffnock 17-year-old Holly Edgar, who has allergies to milk protein, nuts and avocado, gave the talk to fellow pupils and teachers. experiences and knowledge they can better educate those around them help anyone living with allergies to feel safer and less embarrassed. Martha said: “I was being teased and so were some of my friends with severe allergies. I wanted people to realise that this isn’t a joke and it doesn’t define all of me.
Martha’s mum, Paula, who is a volunteer for the Anaphylaxis Campaign, said: “We’re so proud of the girls for their courage but also they’ve shown other young people who are just as selfconscious and embarrassed that they can be confident, brave and unashamed.” St. Ninian’s head teacher John Docherty said: “We are very proud of both Holly and Martha, who showed exceptional leadership of their peers and teachers.” For more information visit: www.anaphylaxis.org.uk.

Louise Russell, founder of Give a Dog a Bone charity picked up the Community Contribution Award
Three local women have become the winners of two prestigious awards that honour “the incredible women of Scotland”. Elaine Holmes, of Newton Mearns, and Olive McIlroy, of Renfrew, won a Lifetime Inspiration Award (sponsored by Apex Hotels) in the Amazing Women Awards 2019. The women came together to campaign against controversial MESH implants after they both suffered debilitating consequences of the surgical implants. The pair, who are now close friends, are previous winners of a Sunday Mail Unsung Heroes award. Louise Russell, who is the founder of the charity Give a Dog a Bone, triumphed in the Community
Contribution Award (sponsored by Stagecoach). Louise set up Give a Dog a Bone, which has drop-in centres in Shawlands and Troon, to help the over 60s to be able to afford a rescue pet companion – and to tackle loneliness as people age. She said: “It's a real privilege to win the Amazing Community Contribution Award. “There are so many people out there doing great things in the community that go untold, so I'm really very grateful to be
recognised for my personal contribution.” The Amazing Women Awards were organised for the second year by Glasgow-based No.1 Magazine in association with Apex Hotels. A ceremony at Glasgow’s Old Fruitmarket last month saw 11 accolades handed out in celebration of some of Scotland’s most inspirational ladies. From impressive sporting feats to unbelievable displays of strength, selflessness and courage, the Amazing Women Awards were a chance to recognise the efforts and achievements of women from across Scotland. TV presenter and writer Jackie Bird presented the awards on the night.

ENABLE SCOTLAND IS 65 YEARS OLD disabilities and/or autism and their families, they help people to enable them to become more confident, supporting them to achieve their dreams and to build good lives. The co-ordinators also work alongside communities, groups and organisations, supporting them to become more welcoming and inclusive. A family member who enjoys great support from there co-ordinator says “My LACs support not only our son but us. They have knowledge and experience on which we can draw to give our son the best chances of a fulfilling independent life.
Enable Scotland fundraisers at the 2018 Kiltwalk
For the past 65 years, ENABLE Scotland have worked hard to create an equal society for every person who has a learning disability. Their endeavours have led to some great success stories. Together they have: • Won the right for children to get an education in the 1970s • Taken people out of long stay institutions in the 1990s • Won the right for people to direct their own care and support in the 2000s. A spokesperson from Enable Scotland says: “In East
Renfrewshire, families still need our support. People who have learning disabilities are still lonely and isolated. They are sometimes ignored and are often bullied. Most don’t have jobs and don’t have the prospect of going to university. People will die 20 years younger than the general population, and less than one in three of the people we support can name at least one
close friend. With your help, the ENABLE Scotland family can – and does – change all that. With your support, we will continue breaking down barriers and continue the vital work we do in East Renfrewshire.” East Renfrewshire Local Area Coordinators (LACs) work alongside people who have learning
They can view our differences from outside the close family circle. We feel we can trust them and know they will listen.” ENABLE Scotland are asking you to show your support by joining them to help young adults to live independently and experience life in as normal a way as possible by lacing up your trainers and walking the Kiltwalk on their behalf or simply by becoming a member. Just by showing your support you are making a difference.

There are plenty of local walking groups in the area and is great way of getting fit and meeting new people
With spring in the air, older people in our communities are being encouraged to join a regular series of health walks. “A simple walk and socialisation can significantly improve physical and mental health and we would encourage any older residents to join in.”
East Renfrewshire HSCP Walking Groups are the result of a collaboration between East Renfrewshire Health and Social Care Partnership, Paths for All and NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde. They offer a range of different walking opportunities in the region.
The initiative, which has been developing over five years, also trains volunteers as walk leaders so they can deliver walks that are short, safe, local and also low level.
An East Renfrewshire Council spokesperson said: “The East Renfrewshire Walking Groups are a fantastic asset to the community.
There are currently walks in the local area in Rouken Glen Park and Newton Mearns, with plans to start new walks in Busby, Clarkston and Eaglesham.
“They motivate older adults to get out of the house, go for a walk without over-exerting themselves and have a cup of tea and a chat at the end.
Entry-level walks are held on a Monday in Newton Mearns, a
Tuesday in Eastwood Park and a Wednesday in Rouken Glen Park. Rouken Glen Walkers also meet on a Wednesday, with higher level walks, including steps and inclines. One of the walkers said: “I’ve recently joined my local walking group and I really enjoy catching up with people and the opportunity to be part of a group. “I hadn’t been to the park in many years but it’s a great park and I really enjoy walking through it seeing the trees and flowers changing each week through the seasons.” Further information from Sine Delahunt on tel: 0141 451 0750 / 07894 802349 or email: sine.delahunt@ eastrenfrewshire.gov.uk.

FARE’S FAIR FOR PLAYGROUP
Late News Joint Services for Holy Week 14th-21st April
Thursday 18th Maundy Thursday 7pm. All Mearns Churches Together. Service at Mearns Kirk Parish Church.
A playgroup that has been at the heart of the community for 40 years was touched by the thoughtful gesture of a taxi driver. Overlee Playgroup had been hosting a Spring Pamper fundraising night recently. The evening welcomed local parents and friends to enjoy a variety of treatments such as facials, massages, and reflexology. There was also a prosecco and cocktail bar served by a professional cocktail waiter, as well as a variety of goods on sale including candles, soaps and handbags. After the event, the playgroup’s chairperson Katie Ritchie booked a taxi home. Manager Mo McGill picks up the story. She says: “Katie was going home after helping with the fundraising night and she was picked up by a taxi driver named Norman.
“When she told the driver where she had been, he insisted that she give her fare to Overlee Playgroup, which was amazing. Norman had fond memories of the group because his children had attended when they were young. This is the sort of thing that sums up how wonderful our playgroup is and what people think of us.” The playgroup, which has moved premises from Overlee Pavilion to Stamperland Community Hall, has four dedicated staff members with almost 70 years of service between them. They offer supervised morning sessions for children aged two to five. They also host community events, such as the annual

Mo has been running the playgroup for the last five years. She said: “We really are a team. My colleagues Elaine, Linda and Karen have been working at the playgroup for 20 years.
Good Friday
“The parents of the children are so positive about the environment we create. We recently had parents sending their daughter to our playgroup because the mum had attended as a child and she wanted to give her daughter the same experience. This is lovely.”

DAFFODIL TEA FUNDRAISER
What's Up Doc? with Dr Nick Dunn
This month: LEARN TO LOVE YOUR LIVER…
From left to right: Busby Primary Headteacher with Busby Nursery Staff and Parents, Gillian McRobb, Julie McCarron, Lynne Small, Alison Findlay, Mairi Watson and Gillian Boyd
Busby Nursery celebrated the start of spring by hosting a Daffodil Tea fundraising event. The nursery children and staff took to the stage at Busby Parish Church to sing spring songs for family members in the audience. The families were then invited to Busby Primary School hall to enjoy hot drinks, home baking and a chance to see the children’s colourful artwork. Parent Mairi Watson, who helped co-ordinate the event, said: “The Daffodil Tea Fundraiser has become an annual event for Busby Nursery and we’re pleased to be able to continue the tradition, even as the nursery continues to expand. “The pupils decorated jars, which were filled with daffodils and
on display around the hall, while their spring artwork adorned the walls. “It’s a lovely event for the children and staff as they get the chance to show what they’ve been working on and the families always love to get involved in baking and watching the children perform.” The event raised more than £420 for Marie Curie Cancer as part of the cancer charity’s biggest annual campaign, The Great Daffodil Appeal. The funds go towards providing much-needed expert care to people with terminal illnesses and supporting their families.

including viruses, antibodies, copper or iron overload, metabolic problems, and obesity. If a cause is identified, drug treatments or lifestyle changes may help. Otherwise a blood test once or twice a year is advised to give warning of any worsening, as it can remain stable. The liver weighs 1.5kg, its jobs including removing toxins and drugs from the body, metabolising fat, protein and sugars as well as making essential proteins, so it’s definitely worth looking after.
This can lead to scarring and cirrhosis over time, or rarely even liver failure. Although alcohol can be blamed, there are many other causes

Protect the future of those closest to you M
ost people are unaware of the dangers and risks to their assets until it’s too late. That’s why discussing what happens in the event of your death is an important and necessary conversation to have with your family and loved ones. It is easy to put off, but failing to prepare for unexpected illness or death could leave your loved ones facing some very difficult issues when you are gone – such as a hefty legal bill. Just as heart-breaking is losing your home to care fees should you ever have to end your days in care. This may need not be the case should you have taken precautions with your estate planning beforehand. Mary Hart’s Will became invalid when she divorced. This was weighing on her mind, so the 73-year-old from Largs, Ayrshire contacted ILAWSSCOTLAND to write a new one and make specific arrangements to help the people most important in her life now. Mary, who now has a Power of

Attorney and revised Will in place, said: “I’m getting older and I want to leave my money to someone in particular. Once I went ahead and spoke to ILAWSSCOTLAND it was a very quick and straightforward process. “Someone from ILAWSSCOTLAND came out to my house and they explained – in a language I could understand – the importance of having a Will and Power of Attorney. “It was very straightforward and an excellent service. “Should anything happen to me my Power of Attorney can make decisions and the little money that I have left is now going exactly where I
wish it to go – to the people who mean the most to me.” These two simple processes, which will be explained to you in an easy to understand format, can ensure your own unique wishes are met after your

of Scots do not have a Will, even though they know it is something they need to address. Are you one of them?
Like most married couples, Jackie and Ian Hunter put off organising a Will. As they enjoyed their lives together, the couple from Linwood in Renfrewshire ‘never got around to it’. It was not until Ian – who was battling illness for several years – sadly passed away last year that 60-year-old Jackie took her future and her financial affairs more seriously. Jackie had heard that ILAWSSCOTLAND can draw up a single simple Will for the special rate of £40 (a price much cheaper than her own lawyer had quoted), so took advantage of the deal, and in the comfort of her own home, organised her Will. She said: “Someone came to the house and asked all the pertinent questions; got the relevant information; then later they emailed me a copy to read through in case I needed to change anything.”
It was important for Jackie to take this simple – yet very important – step towards protecting the future of those closest to her and remove any further heartache when she is not here. She added: “There’s a satisfaction of knowing things are arranged and my

change and Wills may need to be altered – but this was not a problem for ILAWSSCOTLAND, nor was it stressful for Jackie. She explained: “Recently I had some small issues with my Power of Attorney, and ILAWSSCOTLAND did everything they could to sort them out. Then, when I had to make some changes to my Will, there was no hassle. They made the changes and sent it out to me, free of charge. They’ve been so helpful.” No one really wants to think about a Will, but once it is done, it’s done, and that can bring peace of mind, as Jackie has found out. She no longer worries about her, or her family’s, future now her Will is arranged, and is enjoying travelling. She added: “My husband would be the first to congratulate me, moving on with my life and visiting new places we never got to see together.”

JOIN MUNRO CENTENARY PROJECT Legal Matters with Gill Bowman BA LLB
This month: SIMPLIFIED DIVORCE
Keen walkers are invited to join a project to celebrate the centenary of the death of Sir Hugh Munro. “The Munro Table” will remember Munro, who died in 1919, and is credited with creating the UK’s most famous lists of mountain summits. The Scot identified the Scottish mountains with a summit of more than 3000ft. These 282 mountains are known as the Munros. Now The Munro Table project is calling for walkers, runners and climbers to make a special trip to the Munros. Over the next year, each of these Munro baggers will record their summit by writing an account and taking a photograph or creating an artwork at the top.
Eddie Summerton, the creator of the project, said: “The aim is to collect together all the accounts, photographs and artworks from each summit to form an archival boxed set of Munro Table publications.” Eddie envisages that the Munro baggers will write about a variety of experiences, such as weather and wildlife, as they hike their Munro. In due course, The Munro Table will be displayed in a variety of locations such as galleries, educational venues and at festivals, for others to see. To find out more and to sign up to walk see themunrotable. community/info.htm
The breakdown of a marriage and subsequent legal process of divorce can be an emotionally difficult time. Fortunately, in Scotland we have the benefit of the Simplified Divorce Procedure. This is also often referred to as the ’Do It Yourself’ divorce and can only be used in the appropriate circumstances. The only ground for divorce in Scotland is the irretrievable breakdown of the marriage and this can be established in different ways. For the purpose of a simplified divorce, it can be established on the basis that you have been separated for one year and your spouse consents to the divorce, there have been two years of separation or that either you or your spouse have been issued

an interim gender recognition certificate. There must not be any children of the marriage under the age of 16 and there can be no outstanding financial matters. Any financial arrangements can be agreed before applying for divorce by way of a Minute of Agreement. The benefits of using this procedure are that parties do not require to attend court and it is cost effective. The fee for lodging an application with the court is currently £123 and there can be a fee exemption for those on certain benefits. Further information can be found on the Scottish Courts website www.scotcourts.gov.uk or you can consult your solicitor for advice.

Innovative and forward-thinking social enterprise organisation, Greenhouse Community, has launched two new cafés. The cafés have been established at Eastwood Park Leisure in Giffnock and at Barrhead Foundry, where food and snacks are being served alongside theatre and leisure facilities. The Greenhouse Community CIC was established by a couple from Newton Mearns, Steven and Mandy Jacobs, to help people with additional support needs to develop skills and experience. The two new cafés are in addition to three already established. Steven said: “We want to improve the opportunities presented to individuals with additional needs and in a controlled environment.
“Trainees can learn the necessary employability skills to gain future long-term employment and we welcome people from all ages and backgrounds. “We have received a very warm welcome at Eastwood Park and Barrhead Foundry, from theatre goers, fitness fans and library visitors, and we look forward to developing more initiatives with our staff in the coming months.” Eastwood Park and Barrhead Foundry are welcoming positive changes since bringing Greenhouse Community on board earlier this

April 2019 | Senior Savvy
Focus on Eyes
Senior Savvy with Tasnim Rehman This month:
WATERY EYE Watering from the eyes can result from various causes. The most common is reflex watering due to irritation in the eye. This may be caused by the tear film breaking up quickly resulting in dry spots which, when recognised by the eye, produces even more tears to try and overcome the dryness. Patients are sometimes prescribed artificial tear drops to reduce and counter this. Other causes of reflex watering include an infection or inflammation of the eyelids or the surface of the eye, an allergic reaction, a foreign body in the eye, scratches on the front window of the eye (cornea), the eyelid turning in (entropion) or out (ectropion)
STAY NOURISHED’ – HEALTHY EATING IN OLDER AGE PART 3
THE 10 WARNING SIGNS and eyelashes rubbing on the surface of the eye. Watering of the eye can also be caused by obstruction in the tear drainage system. This can occur due to inflammation or, more commonly, without any specific reason. This often occurs in one eye and causes it to water more or less constantly, both outdoors and indoors. If the watering in your eye is troublesome, you should see an optometrist who may be able to pinpoint the likely cause of the symptoms. He/she may refer you to an eye Consultant who will do some tests to check the cause of watering and advise treatment.

READY FOR FINAL SHOW Members of a popular southside theatre company are busy rehearsing for the classic drama The Diary of Anne Frank.
“In January, we returned to Eastwood Park Theatre with the thriller Dial M For Murder, made famous by the Hitchcock movie version. We had performed Dial M For Murder exactly 30 years previously, and judging by audience reactions and rave reviews after the performances, like all classics it has very much stood the test of time.
The show, at Eastwood Park Theatre in May, will round off the successful current season of Giffnock Theatre Players. The Players will perform an adaptation of the Anne Frank story by Wendy Kesselman. Member David Pearson said: “Many people will be familiar with the true story of how Anne Frank and her family hid from the Nazis in attic rooms in Amsterdam for two years. “The Kesselman adaptation is a later and more relevant version of Anne's story, where she documents difficult family dynamics, her budding first romance, her hopes,

fears and dreams – all the while also chronicling the everpresent Nazi threat. “We are looking forward to bringing her powerful story to life with a cast of 10, including a number of young actors new to GTP." The GTP season has seen a range of productions. David said: “In October, the production of Martin McDonagh's dark comedy, The Cripple of Inishmaan, was immensely wellreceived in Glasgow’s West End Webster’s Theatre.

THE WORLD IS GABBY’S LET’S Gabby with co-star Sam Spruell
Gabby and Sam at the UK premier
The cast of The World is Yours on stage at Cannes
A third year pupil of Mearns Castle High School has been enjoying the taste of stardom after landing a part in a hit French movie. Gabby Rose plays Brittany in the comedy thriller, The World is Yours (Le Monde est à toi), directed by award-winning director Romain Gavras.
has been amazing. It was very overwhelming to start with although when I got to know the actors they were so lovely and treated me very nicely.”
The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2018 and has become a big hit in France. It was shown in Scotland for the first time at Glasgow Film Theatre last month. Gabby attended both screenings alongside other actors. Now the film, which can be viewed on Netflix in the US, Australia and most of Europe, is being released to UK audiences.
The Newton Mearns actor spotted the film role in a social media post. After an initial audition in Glasgow, Gabby, then aged 12, was chosen to go to London to read lines from the script in front of Gavras, the Scottish casting director Des Hamilton and lead actor Karim Leklou. Despite having no acting training, Gabby was picked from thousands of applicants.
Gabby, of Newton Mearns, said: “The whole experience
Previously, she had concentrated on singing and
musical theatre, and she still attends and takes part in productions with Harlequin Eastwood Youth Theatre in Giffnock. Filming took place in Benidorm for two weeks, where Gabby also mixed with other big name actors such as Vincent Cassel, Isabelle Adjani and Sam Spruell, her onscreen dad. Gabby, who delivered the Community Magazine before landing the film role, said: “I would say to people to just go for things because you never know what will happen.” Her head teacher Mr Smith described Gabby as an outstanding student. He said: “We are delighted to see her enjoy such great success”.
