WINNER’S PRESIDENTIAL DINNER A teenager from Newton Mearns was surprised to win the opportunity to have special dinner with America’s former First Lady, Michelle Obama.

their parents or carers, so if they got mental health check-ups they might find it easier to talk to a professional who could help them.”

Melissa Croft, 14, from Mearns Castle High School, won a competition run by the Hunter Foundation in which she submitted her inspiring ideas for the future of Scotland.

She said: “I was not expecting it at all. I didn’t really think about winning it – I just thought that even if I don’t win, maybe [the judges] will see that this is a problem that needs fixed.”

She joined a dinner with Michelle Obama at the EICC in Edinburgh last month.

She said she was very grateful to have the honour of meeting Michelle Obama.

Melissa came up with the idea of promoting mental health awareness in schools, to enable more young people to succeed, after discussing the issue in her modern studies class. She researched statistics around mental health issues and how many young people access treatment in Scotland before creating a short video. Her entry caught the eyes of the competition judges.

Melissa says she was shocked when she found out she was one of the winners of the competition.

Melissa Croft, from Mearns Castle High School won a competition run by the Hunter Foundation

Melissa says the concept is simple: “If we get dental check-ups every six months, we should be getting mental health check-ups, too. “I thought this could be a good chance to get the word out and spread awareness, and I think it’s good coming from a young person’s perspective.

Melissa won the opportunity to have a special dinner with America's former First Lady, Michelle Obama

“I know a lot of my friends are having a hard time, and I wanted to help them but I didn’t know the way to – I just wanted to spread awareness. “I think that a lot of the time, young people feel like they don’t have anyone to talk to and they might find it hard to speak to

The Hunter Foundation was created by Sir Tom Hunter, a Scottish businessman, entrepreneur, and philanthropist. He said: “Melissa made us stop in our tracks with her film. “What all the submissions showed us was that our young people have a strong, powerful voice on diverse but consistent themes from pollution to education, poverty to ambition and it’s about time we listened a lot more to them.”

TV VET’S PUPPY LOVE

ADVERTISE

A vet based in Newton Mearns is taking part in a national CBeebies programme to teach kids about his work caring for sick animals.

FROM AS LITTLE AS

to watch. Instead, it’s about animals with minor conditions, which can be treated quite easily, and showing that animals can get sick, just the same as humans. “Rosie had some little benign warts on her body, which were about the size of baked beans. They can be harmful if they are left untreated, so the programme shows how we operated on her to remove them.”

Dermot Mullen and his two daughters, Orla, six, and Colette, four, were part of the filming for an episode of Ferne and Rory’s Vet Tales, along with their 11 year old Jack-a-doodle, Rosie.

The show has also focused on pets with matted fur, or animals that need vaccinations. Orla and Colette had their time on camera, too, playing with Rosie in the garden at their house before her operation.

Dermot works as a veterinary surgeon at Rouken Glen Vets in Newton Mearns. He says the fact he is not only a dad and a pet owner, but also a vet, made him an ideal person to work with on the show.

Dermot said: “The kids absolutely loved it. Lots of their friends already knew who Ferne and Rory were, so they thought it was really cool that I was going to be on the show.”

The programme is aimed at teaching kids aged fourto-eight about how vets go about looking after sick animals. Dermot said: “It doesn’t focus on animals who are really unwell, or anything which would be upsetting for kids

CUPPA SCREAM If you kept yelling for 8 years, 7 months and 6 days, you would produce enough sound energy to heat up a cup of tea.

It has since been performed and reinterpreted worldwide. The Pantaloons offer an energetic version of the play with a modern twist through dance, music and comedy. Mark said the audience can expect “all the wit of Wilde's wonderful words mixed with some frantically funny physical humour and live music. He added: “We try to put a contemporary spin on every classic that we adapt for the stage while also keeping the spirit of the play alive.

Theatre goers are in for a treat this month with an outdoor production of Oscar Wilde’s famous play The Importance of Being Ernest. It will be performed by The Pantaloons at Greenbank Garden, an 18th century National Trust for Scotland owned property in Clarkston on August 17 at 7pm. The Pantaloons are a touring theatre company that have staged a wide range of productions, including Shakespeare, and the director

Mark Hayward says: “We like a challenge. The Importance of Being Earnest, A Trivial Comedy for Serious People was first performed in 1895 in London. It is a farcical comedy in which the protagonists try a range of tactics to escape the perceived burdens of social obligations.

INVITE TO CAMERA CLUB This session, as a result of the club winning the UK Camera Club of the Year competition, three high level Fuji Ambassadors will visit the club to give illustrated talks on various aspects of photography. These will include landscapes, portraiture and fashion/ advertising.

Last year’s President, David Taylor (centre), sharing a joke with trophy winners Grant Hutton and Ken Lindsay

A camera club is keen to welcome photographers – both new and old members – for the first meeting of the 2018-2019 programme. Eastwood Photographic Society returns with a filled syllabus of weekly events on Thursday September 6 at 7.30pm in Albertslund Hall, Newton Mearns. Jim McCreery, from the club, said: “We are inviting existing members and also anyone in the area interested in photography who would like to improve their skills with their camera. “For potential new members there is no obligation to join

immediately. They can come along to two of three meetings to see if it is what they want.” The club offers a varied programme, between September and April, of guest speakers, workshops, internal club competitions and inter-club events. Club competitions include both digital and print. All of these aspects, in their own way, can provide inspiration, tips and ideas on how to improve the capturing of photographic images.

QUALITY KITCHEN FACELIFTS

Jim said: “The society’s history dates back to the 1940s. In the early days a small group of photography enthusiasts met in the village of Eaglesham. Meanwhile, another group began to meet in the former YMCA building in Stamperland. A few Eaglesham group members joined the Stamperland group and, in 1943, Eastwood Photographic Society was born. Today we are a thriving club and the club’s President Mary Robertson and her committee will welcome new and existing members at our first meeting back for 2018.” See www.eastwoodps.co.uk for a full syllabus, which will be posted towards the end of August.

VOTE FOR YOUR LOCAL CHAMPIONS Nominations have opened for local community submissions for the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service. If you know someone who does extraordinary work locally you can show your appreciation by submitting their name for a possible award. The award was introduced by The Queen in 2002 and is given to people and groups who have demonstrated serious dedication to their local area. The Lord-Lieutenant of Renfrewshire, Guy Clark, said: “Voluntary groups make such a difference in their communities and make such a massive contribution to people’s lives.” Nominations need to be in by September 14 at www.qavs.direct.gov.uk.

There will be Pudsey bear themed activities for children, with colouring in, poems and cakes to keep them amused. Show convenor Fergus Cumming said: “August is a busy time for members of the society as they make the final preparations for their exhibits for the show.

THINKING OF BUILDING AN

We all know that alcohol has health risks, but I was recently interested to read that every time we drink alcohol, it causes gut and liver damage and increases body fat! When we take a drink, the alcohol first causes damage to the gut lining, allowing toxins to more easily enter the bloodstream. It first gets broken down into acetaldehyde, a chemical toxin that causes nausea and replaces healthy liver with scar tissue. Acetate is then formed, and each time it’s created, small parts of the liver degenerate and die. The body then

converts acetate to fatty acids which leave fat deposits on the liver, preventing it from working efficiently. So, every time we drink we increase our liver’s scar tissue, inflammation, fat deposits, cell death, as well as increasing the toxins in our blood. And we wonder why we don’t perform so well the morning after? On the other hand, the less alcohol we drink the better our sleep, mood, weight and energy levels, as well as clearer skin condition. Perhaps the next time you “drink to your health”, it might be a non-alcoholic one?

BALLET

The first ballet school, the AcadĂŠmie Royale de Danse, was established in France in 1661. Today there are three main forms of ballet: classical, neoclassical and contemporary. Ballet's conventional steps, grace and fluidity of movement are a great foundation for dance in general.

LINE DANCING

Line dances are choreographed dances performed in unison by a group of people in rows. Anybody can do it and the steps are easy to learn. Beginners can enjoy dancing to a whole range of routines to all genres of music. You don't need a partner so it's great for meeting people.

SCOTTISH

Scottish Country is a social dance involving groups of couples dacing to set routines. These dances are set to musical forms (Jigs, Reels and Strathspey Reels) which come from the Gaelic tradition of Highland Scotland, as do the steps used in performing the dances.

CONTEMPORARY

BALLROOM

Ballroom dancing has made a comeback in recent years. There are many styles of ballroom dancing from around the world, such as the waltz, tango and foxtrot, and each has specific step patterns. It is essential for both partners to know the steps so they can dance together.

SALSA

Modern jive has evolved from jive and swing into one of the simplest of all partner dances. There's no footwork to learn so within half an hour your local club will have you turning and spinning to the biggest chart hits of today and yesterday, with lots of different partners.

Jazz dancing is energetic and fun, consisting of unique moves, fancy footwork, big leaps and quick turns. Jazz dance was popularised in the US by the big bands of the swing era. It offers a full body workout, developing dance ability, flexibility, strength and rhythm.

STREET

Highland dancing is a style of competitive solo dancing developed in the Scottish Highlands in the 19th and 20th centuries in the context of competitions at public events such as the Highland games. It is often performed to the accompaniment of bagpipes.

MODERN JIVE

MODERN JAZZ

Street dance describes urban dance styles that evolved in the street, school yards and nightclubs, including hip hop, popping, locking, krumping and breaking. These dances are practised competitively, as well as being an art form and a great workout.

HIGHLAND

Unlike dances such as ballet, contemporary dance is not associated with specific techniques. In contemporary dance, people attempt to explore the natural energy and emotions of their bodies to produce dances that are often deeply personal.

TAP

Salsa dancing is a fun and flirtatious form of partner dancing, fusing steamy Afro-Caribbean and Latin styles into simple and lively movements. The basic steps are easy to learn, and you'll salsa your way across the dance floor before you know it.

Tap dance uses shoes with small metal plates on the soles to make the dance itself part of the music. Tap evolved in America and had its roots in African dance, Irish dance and clog dancing. Tap is as popular today as it was in the heyday of the great Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly musicals.

ZUMBA

Zumba is a popular fitness programme inspired by Latin dance. The word "Zumba" comes from a Colombian word that means to move fast and have fun. Using upbeat Latin music together with cardiovascular exercise, Zumba is aerobic dancing that's great fun and easy to learn.

BOOK IN FOR SUMMER SESSIONS

Legal Matters with Gill Bowman BA LLB

This month: WORKING CONDITIONS

Locals are reminded to buy tickets for an exciting line-up of top acts that will play at a park festival this month. The Glasgow Summer Sessions take place from August 22 to 29 in Ballahouston Park. On August 22 it’s American rock band The Kings of Leon (pictured) that will headline, while on August 25 it’s the turn of British rock band Catfish and the Bottlemen to take centre stage. The final night of the festival is August 29 American rapper Kendrick Lamar. There will be other live acts playing each night. Tickets are still available at www.smmrsessions.com/ glasgow/tickets

The whole of the UK has recently been enjoying unprecedented warm weather. Although this is generally welcome, it has also created some uncomfortably hot indoor working environments and complaints about working conditions. Guidance for employers and employees can be found in the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992, which provides that during working hours the temperature in all indoor workplaces must be reasonable. There is no legal minimum or maximum working temperatures to determine what reasonable is or precisely when it would be considered too cold or too hot to work.

However, it does suggest that the temperature should be a minimum of 16ºC or 13ºC if employees are doing physical work. Unfortunately, there is no guidance for a maximum temperature limit provided for. There is a requirement that employers must adhere to health and safety at work law that includes; keeping the temperature at a comfortable level and providing clean and fresh air. In the event you feel your workplace is too hot to work comfortably then you should raise this directly with your employer initially who should take appropriate and reasonable steps to address this with you and any other employees affected.

TOP TIPS PASTEY PICTURES When hanging a picture frame, put a dab of toothpaste on the frame where you need the nails to be. Then simply press against the wall to leave marks (which can later be wiped) as guides for hammering in.

TOMATO CHOPPING The simplest way to slice a bunch of cherry tomatoes is to sandwich them between two plastic lids and run a long knife through all of them at once!

Total Swimming Academies was formed over 10 years ago by Olympic medallist and Chair of Swim Safe, Steve Parry. With around 1 in 2 children leaving primary school unable to swim in the UK, Steve’s mission was to create swimming opportunities for all children aged 3-11, resulting in happier, healthier and safer communities. Lessons are available at Boclair Academy in Bearsden. Total Swimming prides itself on creating engaging lessons in a safe environment, so children can enjoy themselves while learning an essential life skill.

which is exactly what Total Swimming is achieving and continues to deliver.

Small class sizes, fully qualified teachers and online progression monitoring are just some of the ways in which Total Swimming make the Learn to Swim journey the best it can possibly be – ensuring the process is convenient for parents and fun for children. Discussing the programme, Parry says: “Giving every child in the community the opportunity to Learn to Swim is something I am passionate about. Swimming is such a vital skill and should be made available to everyone,

“With the help of a fantastic team of truly talented teachers, we give a first class Learn to Swim journey that I’m proud to offer to our swimmers and their parents. “The recent introduction of direct debit has made swimming lessons even more accessible, making payment easier and hassle free.“ Book your free lesson today at Boclair Academy, Bearsden by emailing boclair@totalswimming. co.uk or calling 0161 764 2224 and quoting ‘August Swim’ before August 30th.

NEW COURTS AT POPULAR PARK Senior Savvy with Tasnim Rehman

This month: URINARY TRACT INFECTIONS

Two new tennis courts have opened in a local park after a £100,000 investment.

Urinary tract infections are caused when E. coli bacteria enters the urethra and travels to the bladder or kidney, it can affect all or different parts of the urinary tract.

East Renfrewshire council has funded the public courts at Rouken Glen Park.

Council Leader Tony Buchanan said: "The tennis courts are a valuable addition to the local area and we look forward to welcoming tennis players of all abilities to the park.

They replace the courts that previously existed in Stamperland, prior to the land being sold by the owners for development.

“Tennis is a great way for people of all ages and abilities to keep fit, stay healthy and have fun all year round.”

The aim is to encourage more people to take up tennis and to make use of Rouken Glen Park in Giffnock.

Councillor Alan Lafferty, Convener for Environment, added: “The courts are a brilliant addition to the park, building on a recent £3 million investment that has seen the creation of a playpark, refurbished visitor centre and redeveloped wall garden.”

The courts are free to use and there is no need to make a booking.

A table tennis table is also open nearby with equipment available from the park's pavilion.

A bladder/ kidney infection can be nothing more than a brief nuisance, or it can cause major discomfort and require medicine and rest. The elderly do not exhibit the same symptoms as younger sufferers therefore the entire body can be affected before an infection is suspected and diagnosed, in some cases an emergency that requires immediate treatment. Men and women can suffer however women are more susceptible.

• Not urinating frequently • Diabetes • Poor hygiene habits • Kidney stones • Certain medications • ncontinence – especially people who wear incontinence aids • Immobility resulting in Inadequate bathroom breaks • Difficult clothing to remove when visiting bathroom • Simply forgetting to go • Not relaxed therefore not completely emptying the bladder • Dehydration (which will only exacerbate the issue) • Menopause (women) urinary tract lining thins and weakens • Enlarged prostate (men) obstructs urine flow.

HIGH JUMP TO EUROS David added: “High jump can be an annoying event sometimes. I missed one bar at 2.23m and that was the only difference between me and Chris as we both cleared the same height of 2.26m. “That means I just missed out on competing at the Athletics World Cup in London this weekend but hopefully now, after that jump in Birmingham, bigger competitions will open up to me. That height shows that I can perform at the top level.”

A Giffnock North athlete says achieving his goal of qualifying for this month’s European Athletics Championships has made his year. High jumper David Smith has qualified for the European Athletics Championships in Berlin, after an impressive performance at the British Championships. The 26-year-old achieved a personal best of 2.26 metres and won a silver medal at

the competition earlier this year. The result secured his place at the tournament in Berlin. The European Championships will be held jointly in Berlin and Glasgow from August 1 to 12. The athletics will play out in the German capital.

David said: “I was delighted with my result and performance in Birmingham at the British Champs. It has been my aim all year to jump the height to qualify for the European Championships so to do it at the trials and place top two was almost a perfect scenario.” He just missed out on clinching the gold medal when Englishman Chris Baker also managed to clear 2.26m.

CARE VISITS AT HOME

It has been a stellar year for David, who competed for Scotland at his second Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast in April, where he finished 10th. He also took part in the Games in Glasgow in 2014. He has certainly impressed his club in the south side, who took to Twitter to congratulate him: “David Smith takes silver at British Championships with a new PB of 2.26… Well done David from all at Giffnock!”

Evelyn Baxter and George Mclachlan from Busby Community Council as work starts on the Spider Park

Busby Community Council has been working to transform a children’s play park in Busby this summer. The Spider Park redevelopment in Busby, next to Cart Mill Family Centre at Cartside Road, is benefitting from a makeover and the area has been redesigned with brand new play equipment. The new areas featured several swings, a slide, a play and climb zone, a see saw and a ‘chill’ zone, as well as a natural play area and features wet pour safety surfacing. The work is being carried out by Wicksteed, the leading commercial playground manufacturer in the UK.

Busby Community Council proposed the redevelopment of the park and offered three options to local children, to get their views and preferences on the design proposals. They also applied for funding from several agencies for the work at the end of last year and have been keeping residents up to date with developments via their Facebook page, saying they were ‘delighted’ that the upgrading work had commenced. The official opening of the park takes place on August 4 from 2-4pm, with facepainting, snacks and games. Everyone is invited to come along, join in the fun and celebrate the new play space.
