JACK WINS PARLIAMENT CHAIR A young politics student from Clarkston is delighted to have been elected as chair of the Scottish Youth Parliament (SYP). Jack Dudgeon, 20, and a number of other newly elected SYP members will now have an influence on young people’s issues in Scotland. The student took a year out of his politics degree at the University of Glasgow to become involved in the SYP. He became vice-chair and, just a few weeks ago, he took over as chairperson, which is a voluntary roll.

In the election, Jack was up against one other candidate and had to pit his ideas against her in a five-minute speech

following a 10-minute question and answer session. The voters then decided whose ideas they liked best. “Intimidating” is how Jack described the experience, before adding: “But luckily everything ran smoothly and I was able to deal with

Photograph © Peter Sandground Photography

Now he is in post, Jack will be working closely with the newly elected Board of Trustees and appointing them with responsibilities, before they take the SYP forward together over the next 12 months. Jack is also a respected member of East Renfrewshire Youth Forum, which meets in Newton Mearns and Barrhead on alternate weeks. He hopes to return to university next year. He added: “It's a very exciting time for the organisation because I feel like we have a very passionate and energised board ready to take on the challenges that come with running a national charity.”

It is a goal that Jack, a former pupil of St Ninian’s High School in Giffnock, has been working hard towards.

The Scottish Youth Parliament (SYP) is the democratically elected voice of Scotland’s young people and was founded on June 30, 1999, the day before the Scottish Parliament was established. Its goal is to “ensure Scotland is the best place in the world to grow up” and members are aged between 14 and 25.

On his election to his year-long role, Jack said: “It’s been a busy, stressful and exciting campaign period, but I am very pleased that the election went my way and I was elected chair. “It took a few days to sink in and I've certainly needed a bit of time to recover. I’ve put a lot of time and effort in, so I'm delighted that it's paid off.”

FAMILY HOMES DEMAND A reported high demand for family homes in local communities has left many hopeful buyers disappointed this summer. A Clarkston estate agency has confirmed an “unprecedented demand for three-bedroomed family homes in East Renfrewshire”. In just a few months, from January and April this year, Clyde Property sold 15 three-bed homes. Most of the properties sold within a fortnight and, in total, they achieved a combined value of more than £300,000 above the Home Report. It’s claimed that high quality education is one of the main attractions for people moving to the region, as well as ameneties. No fewer than three of the seven secondary schools in East Renfrewshire – Mearns Castle, St Ninian’s and Williamwood – appear in the top five of Scotland’s best schools, published by The Times newspaper.

Members of a local photography club are delighted to have triumphed in a closely contested end-ofseason league final. Eastwood Photographic Society took a narrow win over regular rivals, Carluke Camera Club, in the Glasgow and District Photographic Union (GDPU) Image league final. The final judging, held in East Kilbride, was strongly contested by the six winning clubs from the preliminary rounds. Eastwood took the Lizars trophy by a single point with a unique double being completed when Eastwood’s John Hannah won the top image medal for his photo, Goshawk Mantling. In other external competitions earlier in the 2018-2019

session, Eastwood was eighth in their first attempt at the Federation Internationale l’Art Photographique (FIAP) World Club Competition. The club also gained fourth place in both the Scottish Print and Scottish Digital competitions held in Stirling. Individual members gained recognition for their work, too. Wins came in the annual friendly international with Victoria Camera Club in Canada and the three-way tie with Ayr and Dumfries camera clubs. Club President Mary Robertson

Mary said: “We hope more amateur photographers will join us this coming year. We try to accommodate all levels of photographic ability. “We are a friendly club open to all and we hope those with an interest in photography will come along for the new season.” See www.eastwoodps.co.uk for more information.

£500 FOR FARES4FREE struggling to come to terms with civilian life. The initiative has now been rolled out nationwide to include Ayrshire, north and south Lanarkshire, Aberdeenshire, Perth, Dundee, Edinburgh and Glasgow. David said: “The taxi drivers that offer the Fares4Free genuinely want to help. They want to give something back to the veterans and this is their way of helping them. “Some will go the extra mile, taking the passengers for a cup of tea or sitting with them at a meeting or appointment.

Branch member Ken Harvie and vice-chairman Les Clark presented a cheque for £500 to David Gibson,

A charity was delighted to receive a funding injection last month from the Newton Mearns branch of the Royal British Legion. A cheque for £500 was presented to Fares4free founder David Gibson by branch member Ken Harvie and vice-chairman Les Clark. Fares4Free was set up by East Renfrewshire taxi driver David to encourage taxi drivers to give up some of their fares to help veterans who otherwise

face difficulty in getting out to access essential services, such as hospital appointments. Sustainable support is given to local veterans who have longterm disabilities resulting from military service. These include veterans who have Alzheimer’s and some younger veterans who are

“It’s great that the charity can help so many veterans in need.” In East Renfrewshire alone, almost £10,000 of fares have been provided free of charge over the past two years by David and his fellow five badge drivers. The fund-raising and donation by the Legion members aims to ensure the work of David and his team can continue at its present level. See www.fares4free.org.

PLOT A TRIP TO OPEN DAY A local allotments is hosting an open day to show people what goes on behind the scenes of the busy community enterprise. The Eastwood Nursery Allotments event is set to take place on Saturday August 31, from 1pm to 4pm. A timeline and short history of the site will be displayed and visitors will be able to tour the whole site. There will also be a range of stalls selling baking, jams and chutneys, all of which have been made from allotment produce, a plant stall, a vegetable stall and several raffles and a tombola. All funds raised from the open day will be used to improve the site.

Colin Stanage, chairman of the Eastwood Nursery Allotments Association, said: “We welcome people to come along throughout the afternoon to find out more about the allotments, which have gone from strength to strength over the last couple of years. “Although all the plots are currently taken – and we have a healthy waiting list – we thought it would be good to offer the public access to see what we do. We hope the open day will become an annual event.”

Colin says: “The allotments are thriving and we have a great community of gardeners. We have also created beneficial partnerships with local schools.” To find out more, see Eastwood Nursery Allotments on Facebook.

ACCESS TO LIFE- KIRA IS A SUPER VOLUNTEER SAVING DEVICES More than 20 life-saving devices are being installed in public places throughout East Renfrewshire. A £25,000 investment by the council will see 23 defibrillators available at all times to the local public. Locations include Duff Hall, Busby; Fairweather Hall, Newton Mearns; Mearns Library; Rouken Glen Picnic Pavilion and Rouken Glen Boaters Café. The automated external defibrillators (AED) are small machines that can be accessed for use in an emergency if someone suffers a cardiac arrest. Council Leader, Councillor Tony Buchanan, said: “I am delighted that 23 defibrillators are being installed throughout the local area.”

A kind-hearted teenager has clocked up 1,000 hours of volunteering and has been hailed as a “role model” to her peers. From assisting at school clubs, to volunteering at summer camps and charity shops, Kira Henry has given up her free time to help others at dozens of events across the region. Kira, who is a member of East Renfrewshire Youth Forum, says she began logging her hours as part of her nomination for a Saltire Award, but today has clocked up more than a 1000 hours, which amounts to almost 42 days and nights of continuous volunteering. The fifth year pupil at Barrhead High School said: “I enjoy helping people whenever I can. If it puts a

smile on someone’s face, it makes me happy. “I have been volunteering in the school since I was in second year, at after school clubs or the lunchtime club. I will help out any way I can, taking registers and leading groups. “Outside of school, I am part of the youth forum and this opens me up to other volunteering opportunities, such as litter picks and Barrhead’s Rainbow Run last year. “I also volunteered at a Race for Life, cheering people on. During the summer, I am one of seven

volunteers at a summer camp, which runs for four weeks.” Kira says she is inspired and supported by a number of people. She says: “A lot of the young people inspire me and so does my PE teacher. All my teachers have been so supportive.” Kira hopes to make a career as a PE teacher or a motivational speaker, but insists she will always make time for volunteering. Heather McVie Branley, Young Persons’ Community Worker at East Renfrewshire Council and a coordinator at the Youth Forum, said Kira is a “fantastic role model to her peers”. If you are inspired by Kira’s story and would like to volunteer, visit Voluntary Action’s website www.va-er.org.uk.

Caroline Bennett at The Wee Art Studio in Clarkston

ART AT HEART OF COMMUNITY A local art studio is moving to larger premises due to popular demand – and will be expanding a timetable of sessions for special needs. Art and additional support needs teacher, Caroline Bennett, has run Clarkston’s Wee Art Studio for more than two years from her home. She will open at the new location at 415 Clarkston Road on August 24. She says: “This move will enable me to offer more classes both in the day-time and evenings and will give me the opportunity to offer sessions to people with additional needs as well as parent and carer pop-in-and-paint sessions.

“The aim is that the space benefits the wider community and offers a place for more people to come along and discover how art can improve their mental wellbeing. Caroline has more than 25 years of teaching in all areas of education. She has seen the many positive effects of art and creativity. She says: “There are many benefits of having a creative outlet, no matter what people’s previous art experiences. Being

involved in art helps to build selfesteem and a more positive and calmer state of mind. “In schools, I have used art to work with emotionally challenged young people and this has also proven to be a positive experience. As well as offering extra art sessions at the new studio, Caroline will have a gallery of original art and design gifts from local and Scottish artists. Art classes for children and adults run throughout the week and class times and prices are on the website. The shop will be shut during lessons. See www.theweeartstudio.co.uk.

PARKING PLEA AT PARK

Late News Saturday 31st Mearns Kirk Helping Hands: Cancer Support Group

WANT TO PLAY IN A BAND? Do you have children who would like to play in a band this summer? This month, Mango Music offers the chance for three days of learning music and playing in bands. The programme is August 6, 7 and 8 from 9.15am to 2pm at the Glasgow Maccabi Youth Centre in Giffnock. Suitable for beginners, kids will learn to play their choice of instrument, play in a band with other young musicians and perform a live concert at the end. The sessions are led by an experienced team of music tutors. The cost of the three days is £120 per child. See www.mangomusic.org.

A fresh plea for safer parking, especially at peak road use times, has been issued in the Giffnock area. Packed off-street car parks serving the council’s headquarters, Eastwood Park Leisure Centre, Eastwood Park Theatre and St Ninian’s High School are causing difficulties for drivers who need to park for work, appointments and meetings. This has led to cars being parked illegally. One Newton Mearns motorist said: “The parking is a nightmare. I know of several people who have been fined for parking at the kerbside instead of a designated parking space. In a bid to curb the parking issues, and to keep roads safe

for school pupils, the council is urging drivers to park only in designated parking bays and avoid disabled spaces, unless displaying a Blue Badge, as parking attendants can issue a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN). A council spokeswoman said: “It is especially important that drivers observe the parking restrictions in place as these help to ensure a safe environment. “We would urge everyone to park appropriately and observe and comply with the restrictions now in place in many of our car parks, which have been introduced for the benefit of all.

What's Up Doc? with Dr Nick Dunn

This month: ANAPHYLAXIS

Information Technology (IT) sessions in Newton Mearns are booking up three weeks in advance due to popular demand. The free classes take place at The Market Place at The Avenue twice each week and are run by volunteers.

“I can provide help and support with anything from how to copy and paste, to creating an email and sending a photograph.”

Sessions take place on Thursdays from 2pm to 6pm and Fridays from 1pm to 4.30pm.

IT expert Howard is retired and gives up his time two afternoons a week to lead the sessions . He said: “I started learning IT around 10 years ago and I understand it, but technology is moving so fast that some people feel they’ve fallen behind and can’t get to grips with their laptop, phone or tablet.

The Market Place is a volunteerrun community space, café and shop manned for local people and organisations to come together. To book a session, either pop into the Market Place and speak to one of the staff members or volunteers, or call 0141 639 7248. Food allergy is thought to be on the increase, and we are not sure why. Very rarely, as was in the news a few months ago, people die of the most serious form of allergy – anaphylaxis. However, there are some common misunderstandings about what food allergy actually means. It is not food intolerance, which is when certain foods can result in unpleasant symptoms such as nausea, diarrhoea or stomach pains. Also, some forms of allergy never result in anaphylaxis, but may cause a rash. Whilst anaphylaxis is potentially life-threatening, the risk of death from it is close to 1 in a

million. People who are at risk are generally identified early, and the symptoms include rash, wheezing, swelling around the face and mouth and sometimes collapse. They should always carry an “Epipen” which contains adrenaline and are encouraged to use this early if there is even a small suspicion of anaphylaxis, and get straight to hospital. If there is a delay with the ambulance, a further injection can be given after 5 minutes, to prevent worsening again. With increased awareness by everyone of this problem, including nurses and doctors, it is hoped serious reactions are spotted and treated early!

TIME TO TRY

Something New

The summer holidays already seem like a distant memory, and a distinct chill in the air heralds the onset of autumn – but that doesn’t mean we have to accept that the fun part of the year is nearly over. We understandably moan about our seemingly never-ending winter, but the “off season” – dark nights, frequent rain – is the perfect time to discover new interests, probably mainly indoors, that can deliver major benefits in terms of self-fulfilment and even career advancement. There are so many classes and courses available within an easy journey of home that we really are spoiled for choice when it comes to finding something worthwhile to add to our stock of knowledge and experience, even before you consider

diversions which are mainly about entertainment. Most of us have at one time or another briefly considered learning a language (at least proficiently enough for simple conversation) or playing a musical instrument, but somehow it often seems difficult – in a busy life full of existing commitments – to make it happen. On the cusp of those long dark nights it’s a great time to consider how best to spend those shouldbe valuable hours that might otherwise be taken up with dull nights in with the TV.

Not everybody fancies the idea of a fitness or dance class, but it’s a great way to stay alert during the long drawn-out winter, or you could consider the potential benefits of a yoga class as a nonstressful way of developing inner confidence and bodily health. Still on eastern disciplines, the more active among us might consider learning the basics of karate, a skill which is all about self control but which its enthusiasts also find stimulating and rewarding on a variety of personal levels. The area’s colleges are an obvious first port of call when it comes to deciding just what to choose from the multitude of options on offer, with evening classes – in anything from classical guitar to ancient history – a

standard feature many of us will already have experienced. However it’s also true that “flexibility” is built into many choices now in a way that was seldom the case in the past, and by carefully studying exactly how particular courses or classes operate you should be able to find a day and time that fits in with your existing commitments – there shouldn’t be the need to add any extra stress to what many of us already find a fairly enervating time of year.

Whether it’s an art class, flower arranging, drama or swimming, you’ll find a host of options at a convenient location near you, and while it may not be your primary objective it’s also the case that autumn classes of almost any kind give you the chance to meet new friends and discover shared interests.

If the main aim is simply to develop a leisure interest, the scope is virtually limitless, because the range and sophistication of the courses now available is probably at an all time high, while if it’s academic – or something specifically related to your line of work – it may be more about finding exactly the right course that fits into a pattern of learning you have already developed. For some it may simply be about being able to exchange a few

pleasantries with people in a country you aim to visit on holiday, or it could be you already do a bit of painting, writing, or something similarly creative and are hoping to take what you’ve already achieved to the next level. The advertisers in this feature offer a broad selection of the sort of choices on offer, and are a great place to look for inspiration – those otherwise dreary late-year nights really can be used to open up a wealth of fun and positive opportunities.

CBT focus on weight A Cognitive Behavioural Therapist has launched a series of weight management events in Newton Mearns.

The one-day courses take place in Parklands Hotel and Country Club, Ayr Road, and focus on utilising Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) to lose and manage weight. Andrew Kiani, who has recently retired from the Royal Air Force, brings many years of experience in the mental health industry, working with military personnel and civilian clients, to the events. He said: “The sessions are for people who feel defeated by their apparent inability to lose weight and keep it off. CBT has an excellent track record of success when applied to weight management and can help people to manage cravings, to say no to the wrong foods and to prioritise an individual’s own health and well-being. “With an evidence-based cognitive behavioural approach you can start to take back control by increasing

your awareness and understanding of your relationship with food, learn how your thinking influences your decisions and realise why we get stuck in unhealthy patterns of behaviour.” During the inaugural workshop in May, participant Gordon said: “I learned so much. Andy explains what can be a complicated and emotional subject in such a way that I felt at ease throughout the session. I feel in a great place to start my CBT weight loss journey.” Andy is keen to introduce the CBT approach to a wider audience. He said: “With over a decade developing and facilitating CBT focused weight management groups for military personnel and civilians, I feel passionate about introducing this approach to a more people.”

Dying without a will, known as being intestate, means that the statutory provisions for succession will be applied and your money, property or possessions will be distributed in terms of the Succession (Scotland) Act 1964, which may not accord with your wishes. In Scotland, if there is no will, a spouse or civil partner has certain automatic prior rights in relation to the heritable home in which they reside

and also in relation to part the moveable estate. In addition to this, any children, spouse or civil partner also have legal rights to a portion of the deceased’s moveable estate. In a situation of intestacy, any property that remained thereafter would pass to the children, or next closest living relative thereafter. If there are no further relatives then it falls to the crown. It should be noted that, even where there is a will, those entitled to claim legal rights can choose to do so, whether they have been included in the will or not. The rules surrounding succession can be complex and I suggest you speak to your solicitor if you require further advice.

If you are looking for a fun evening of nostalgic entertainment, how about a Grease Tribute Show? Everyone of a certain age – and those who are younger! – will enjoy the songs of the iconic 1978 film, Grease, which starred John Travolta as Danny and Olivia Newton-John as Sandy. The evening of music, food and drinks is on Friday August 2 at the Busby Hotel, Field Road, Clarkston. Go Grease Lightning is a new tribute night at The Busby. The evening costs £27.50 and includes a glass of bubbly on arrival, a threecourse meal and a DJ until 1am. See www.thebusbyhotel.co.uk.

ARTISTS IN THE SPOTLIGHT

Priyanka Gupta

Pat Lindsay

Sixty local artists who attend East Renfrewshire art classes showcased their work in an exhibition in the Gallery at Eastwood Park. Each artist was invited to choose one piece of work for the display, resulting in an impressive art exhibition that went on display last month. All of the work featured was created by participants of East Renfrewshire Culture and Leisure weekly art classes, from complete beginners to advanced artists, who have attended drawing and painting, oil and acrylic and watercolour workshops.

Newton Mearns beginner Priyanka Gupta signed up for an acrylic painting class after a four-week summer course last year. She said her Friday morning class has a real community feel and that the participants all encourage one another. She added: “It’s great to have my work included in an exhibition. I’m a beginner and I’ve been learning basics like

Stewart Orr

blending and also using blades instead of brushes. “The class is so friendly, supportive and relaxing. We all help each other and Lesley, our tutor, is great at helping me with the tricky parts in my work.” The artists were invited to a launch of the exhibition and swapped stories on what inspired their art and what they have done with their pieces, from selling their work in exhibitions to giving them as gifts. Anthony McReavy, of East Renfrewshire Culture and

Leisure, said: “We have a network of aspiring and established artists coming together to create fantastic pieces in our classes. “We wanted to celebrate and showcase their achievements with a public art exhibition and also thank the tutors, Lesley, Jeff and Rosi for their dedication and continued hard work.” Summer and autumn art classes for adults and children with East Renfrewshire Culture and Leisure are on sale now: www. ercultureandleisure.org/classes.

SPANISH CLUB FUNDRAISER A kind-hearted mum is running a Spanish summer club for children to help raise money to support a school in Uganda.

with Tasnim Rehman

This month: HERE COMES THE SUN... Barbecues, beach trips, picnics are what make summertime so much fun but unfortunately too much outdoor time can also lead to problems like dehydration, which for some senior individuals, can be a common cause of hospitalization.

Rachel Mercedes, of Waterfoot, launched Estrellas Brilliantes (Shining Stars) in 2017, teaching Spanish to tots, children and adults at Cartsbridge Church in Busby, where the summer club will run. The club aims to raise money for the charity Change Tomorrow, which was started by Jonny Aird and his wife Dan, of Newton Mearns. Rachel said: “The first fundraisers we did were for Bolivia. I did mission work there for nine years before coming back to Scotland, where I worked at Glasgow Women's Aid with children in refuge for seven years, before starting to teach Spanish." Last year, the summer fundraiser club raised £1200 to support the studies of a young girl in Bolivia.

Senior Savvy

Apart from drinking regularly there are other steps to prevent dehydration. Help your loved ones, friends and elderly neighbours stay safe and sun-happy!

TIP 1: Wear Breathable Clothing Rachel Mercedes with her son Isaac

Rachel said: “We’re raising money for Change Tomorrow this year to support the education of children in Uganda at a rural school. With the money raised at the summer club, we will hopefully be able to buy desks, paint, textbooks and school supplies for the children.” See www.facebook.com/ Estrellas.Brillantes.Spanish and find out more about Change Tomorrow: www. changetomorrow.co.uk.

Tight synthetic materials make you sweat a lot – wear light breathable layers such as cotton fabrics

TIP 2: Increase Fluid Intake Don’t wait until they ask for a drink, offer water, tea and juice. Try dark drinking glasses – not seeing the clear liquid helps them drink more.

TIP 3: Foods Hydrate Too Leafy greens, celery, berries, melon, cucumber, tomatoes and apples can be added to the summer diet.

TIP 4: Medication Review Certain medication increases the risk for dehydration and sensitivity to the sun – talk to doctors or pharmacists about any concerns.

TIP 5: Stay Indoors at the Hottest Hours The sun is more intense during the middle of the day – help with outdoor activities before then such as gardening, shopping, family days out.

Be safe, Be kind, Be aware - Let’s enjoy the sunshine together.

Up to 100 classic vintage cars will be on display at Giffnock Train Station car park

REVVING UP FOR CAR SHOW Classic car enthusiasts and owners can look forward to an exciting annual show that offers something for all the family. Giffnock is hosting the Classic Car Spectacular, which will be held on Saturday September 7. Up to 100 vintage cars will be on display at the train station car park, while the Royal Bank of Scotland car park across the road will host the family entertainment, including a fun fair, live music and mini zoo. It is the sixth time that Giffnock has staged the car show in conjunction with classic car clubs. Last year, the show suffered a major setback and it was feared

that there may not be a large number of motors on display after the sad death of one of the car club’s presidents. The club pulled out leaving the show 49 cars short – almost half of the total number expected at the 2018 show – as a mark of respect. However, event organisers launched an appeal and, with support, helped make last year’s event the biggest ever, assembling 90 cars in the show, including a Buick once owned by pop legend, Buddy Holly!

This year you can expect to see a selection of original Figaros, classic Mini Coopers, and maybe even an eye-catching pink Cadillac, among many more vintage vehicles. If you own a classic car and would like to attend, it’s not too late. You can register by emailing your name and the make/model to: hello@yoyoep.com The event, from noon to 4pm, is organised by Giffnock Village BID (Business Improvement District). For more information see www. facebook.com/GiffnockVillage. Note that visitors to the show are encouraged to walk or use public transport because parking at the event will be limited.

WE’RE IN ON THE SISTER ACT GIVE YOUR TIME FOR KIDS Children's Hearings Scotland is looking for volunteers to become Panel Practice Advisors in East Renfrewshire.

Eros Musical Society are busy rehearsing their new production, Sister Act

A Clarkston-based musical society is busy with preparation and rehearsals for their latest up-beat stage production, Sister Act. Eros Musical Society, formerly known as East Renfrewshire Operatic Society, will perform the show at East Kilbride Village Theatre from September 17 to 21. Sister Act is based on the 1992 hit film of the same name, starring Whoopi Goldberg. The plot surrounds Deloris Van Cartier, a fast-talking, aspiring singer in a club, who witnesses a mob murder. In order to protect her before she testifies against the killer, she is placed by a witness protection programme into a convent.

The show will start at 7.30pm each night, with an extra matinee on Saturday September 21st at 2.30pm. Tuesday and Wednesday evenings and Saturday matinee tickets are £15, while Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings are £16.50.

With a few twists and turns to the plot, fun ensues when her presence has much more influence at the convent than anyone could have predicted. Eros president Ian McAulay said: “The musical version of Sister Act is a great show, sometimes truly moving and at other times really funny, with amazing dancing and very challenging six-part harmony for our chorus to get stuck into.

Tickets are available from Eros booking manager Mike Driscoll on 07449 919923 or by emailing driscollmichael@hotmail.co.uk.

“Just now our members are busy rehearsing and we hope the
