Eight-year-old Mya Milne, of Clarkston, has been skating for just two years yet she is currently ranked number one in the UK in her beginners category. She has also been picked to train with the Great Britain Development Squad, which is part of the National Ice Skating Association. Contact the Elderly arranges Sunday afternoon tea parties in both Clarkston and Newton Mearns with the aim of helping to combat social isolation. This time of year can be particularly isolating for the elderly because of the weather and, perhaps, a lack of family gatherings.

Volunteer drivers collect guests from their home and accompany them to a gathering in a local host’s home, where they enjoy a couple of hours of tea, cake and conversation with like-minded friends. Angela Rae-Murray is a support officer for Contact the Elderly in Scotland. She said: “We have a

“Life can sometimes be very lonely for older people, particularly during the winter when it can be more difficult to get out and about. But our drivers chauffeur them doorto-door giving them peace of mind and a bit more confidence to socialise with new people. “We know just how much our regular guests look forward to catching up and we hope to share that with some new friends because the difference a little company and a change of scenery can make is amazing. To find out more about becoming a guest or volunteer at Contact the Elderly in Scotland, contact angela. rae-murray@contact-the-elderly. co.uk or call: 07902 246062.

SOVEREIGN BLINDS It’s been a year since the Community Magazine launched – and we wanted to tell you how much we are enjoying the reporting. We have discovered there is a lot going on in groups, clubs and societies across a wide range of subjects in the Glasgow southside communities of Newton Mearns, Clarkston and Busby. We hope you have learned about a new event or joined a group to meet likeminded people or discover a new skill or interest.

We are keen for you to continue to stay in touch with the magazine. We know from the people who have been in contact with a story or events listing for the magazine that local residents like to support charities and groups – and they want to hear about what’s happening in the area and nearby.

Many local people have been in touch with us to tell us about a forthcoming event or to ask for help, such as to attract new volunteers for a charity organisation or to grow a club’s membership.

We also like writing about people doing new or extraordinary things. Perhaps you know someone who has taken on an impressive charity challenge, or a child who has won an award, or a business

that is thriving in an interesting way. If so, please do email us and we will consider the story for a future magazine. It is worth noting that it is a good idea to tell us about a story or event as soon as you can because we often have more stories than we can fit into the pages. Ideally, you should notify us of ideas for articles as early as possible and no later than four weeks before the first day of any month for the best chance of being included. We are looking forward to another busy year of news and events. Contact: info@ thecommunitymagazine.co.uk

SAVE OUR GREENSPACE A similar campaign to oppose any building on Broomburn Park has also been launched.

Local residents have launched a campaign to save Shawwood Park from development

A group of residents has launched a campaign to save an area of local greenspace it believes is threatened by by development. Save Shawwood Greenspace was started by Kirsti Spence, of Newton Mearns, amid fears that Shawwood could be a potential site for a proposed new Eastwood Leisure Centre. So far more than 1500 people have joined the community’s Facebook group and a steering group has also been formed. They have met with a local councillor, submitted a motion to East Renfrewshire Council that building on residential greenspace be denied, organised a leaflet drop

to gather people for a community meeting and drawn up a petition. Kirsti says: “Not one person I have ever come into contact with thinks that building on this greenspace right in the middle of residential Newton Mearns is a good idea…the community are coming together to fight to save our much-loved and widely used greenspace.” The campaign group also state that any associated increased traffic would be a problem.



East Renfrewshire Council has stated that no decision had yet been made on a potential site for a new leisure centre in the Eastwood area. A spokesperson said: “Councillors agreed on October 31 to a new study being carried out to look at the feasibility of a new leisure centre in Eastwood Park. Once this work has been completed, a further report will be considered by councillors. “Since the previous consultant’s report was carried out, a number of factors relating to Eastwood Park have changed, therefore a further analysis and options for the potential for a new build leisure centre on the park is being undertaken at this stage.” Find our more about the campaign on Facebook at Save Shawwood Greenspace or contact teamsaveshawwoodgreenspace@ mail.uk

JOIN CAROL SINGALONGS Local people are being invited to join two carol singing sessions this month. The singalong events will take place at Giffnock Library, Station Road, on December 4 and 11 at 2.15pm. The carol singing will include a variety of tunes, from traditional Scottish songs to Christmas carols. Alan Dryden, who helps organise the sessions, said: “There is no requirement or skill. Anyone that comes along will hear us singing and we encourage them to join in.” Alan is expecting up to 30 people to attend each event and hinted that there may be a special visitor from the North Pole at the library on the 11th. SPORTING SUCCESSES The annual Coaching, Officiating and Volunteer awards took place in the Carmichael Hall, celebrating individuals’ sporting support. The awards, which recognise the contribution of individuals who dedicate their time to helping others with sports, were hosted by East Renfrewshire Culture and Leisure and winners were recognised from partner organisations, community sports hubs and schools. Representatives from SportScotland, the Scottish Football Association and Councillor Colm Merrick presented the winners with their trophies. A special guest, the Scottish Cup, was also on display for the evening. Team Leader for Community Sports Development David McLeish hosted the ceremony with Active Schools’ Team Leader Barry Cook. MORE CARE FOR CHILDREN consultation and parental advisory service.”

CAFÉ PLANS FOR McCOLLS A newsagents that had been in the area for more than 50 years looks set to become a café. A planning application has been submitted to replace former RS McColls on Mearns Road, which opened in the 1960s. The proposal to East Renfrewshire council states the café will offer hot and cold foodstuffs between the hours of 8am and 6pm. Also on the menu will be, “sweets, cakes, ice cream and other sweet and savoury treats and confectionary,” states the application. RS McColls, which was located next-door to the Co-op, closed recently.

An unique independent paediatric healthcare clinic is now accepting new patients on a firstcome-first-served basis. MERAS Children’s Healthcare is the only private paediatric service that is licensed and registered with Healthcare Improvement Scotland to provide healthcare to babies and children of all ages in the independent sector. Founded four years ago by a specialist paediatric consultant, it has recently seen an increase in demand for its services. The founder states: “Although places are limited, we have taken on a team of staff,

including a full multi-disciplinary team of children’s healthcare professionals, so we can welcome more families that need our support. “We offer a wide range of services for children from birth to 16 years old, including advice on allergies, child development and feeding. We also offer immunisations, including those not routinely available in the UK, as well as parental training workshops and even an online

There are several groups of people for whom access to an independent paediatric healthcare specialist is vital, including foreign nationals and ex-pats who may not able to use public health services in the UK. For other patients, they may wish to be seen more urgently by a children’s healthcare professional, if their local waiting list is deemed too long, or they may simply be seeking a second opinion.” MERAS Children’s Healthcare is a not-for-profit organisation, which means that any funds generated are put back into the service to improve quality of patient care. The clinic also aims to donate funds to children’s charities. The founder says: “The aim is to keep costs lean to ensure as many people as possible can access a children’s doctor or therapist whenever required, in a timely and cost-effective manner.” To find out more and for your nearest clinic see www.private-paediatrician.com or call 0141 387 1079.

How can I help keep my eyes healthy? The importance of regular eye tests cannot be underestimated, with your local optometrist able to spot so much more than just problems with your vision – from indicators of diabetes and cardiovascular disease to signs of tumours and stroke. With eye exams free for all in Scotland, there’s really no excuse not to have your eyes checked at least every two years. That’s the advice from Emma Robb, store director at Specsavers in Newton Mearns, who is offering her top tips to help you enjoy good vision for longer…

Give Up Smoking

Get Your Five A Day

Protect Your Eyes From Harm

Compared with non-smokers, smokers are much more likely to develop cataracts (clouding of the lens inside your eye) and age-related macular degeneration (AMD), which can cause loss of central, detailed vision.

A healthy, balanced diet, with a wide variety of fruit and vegetables, will benefit your overall health and may help keep your eyes healthy.

It’s really important to protect your eyes when doing DIY and for certain sports and occupations, by taking extra care and using the correct equipment. Always consider whether you need protective eyewear, masks or other safety gear.

Keep Active While it might seem odd that exercise can help the eyes, it can be important. Keeping active reduces your risk of general health issues such as diabetes and high blood pressure that can cause eye disease.

Protect You Eyes From The Sun Never look at the sun directly, even when something exciting is happening, such as an eclipse. Doing so can cause irreversible damage to your eyesight and even lead to blindness. Several studies also suggest that long-term sunlight exposure is a risk factor for cataracts.

For more information or to book an eye test at Specsavers Newton Mearns, located at The Avenue Shopping Centre, visit www.specsavers.co.uk/newtonmearns or call 0141 639 4897

0141 775 0133 Local scout and warrior group leaders took part in an important training course to learn more about mental health awareness. The leaders were from the 121st Clarkston Glasgow Scout Group, the 121st Glasgow Warrior Unit and the 28th Glasgow (Giffnock) Explorer Scout Unit. The training course, Scotland’s Mental Health First Aid Course: Young People, was organised in response to the increasing number of youngsters who experience issues and problems of a mental health nature. Explorer Scout Leader Gordon Jack, from Warrior ESU, was one of those that attended the course.

He said: “As leaders, we know how to bandage a cut or deal with physical first aid ailments, however, mental health and illnesses were something that we are very unfamiliar with. “A group of us were keen to learn more so we could support young people across our units if they have any issues. “We learned that mental health problems can be caused by increased pressure that

CASE STUDY

Jane B, 82, Lanarkshire After losing her husband, Jane wanted to make some changes to her Power of Attorney, something she already had in place. Unaware she could have two people named as her Power of Attorney, the 82-year-old was advised by ILAWS that she could,

and so appointed her two nieces to take on her financial and medical decisions should she become too ill to do so. Mrs B, who does not keep too well, wanted her Power of Attorney drawn up fast – but her previous solicitor took more than

three months to arrange it. So she contacted ILAWS, and is grateful that she did, because just a month later everything was in place. Mrs B, from Lanarkshire, said: “I wanted it changed quickly because I am in poor health, I am a widow and I have no family of my own. Within two days of contacting ILAWS by phone, they were out at the house. I told them what I wanted, and the personal attention I got over the phone and

PUPILS’ CREATIVE PROJECT

What's Up Doc? with Dr Nick Dunn

This month: FIT TESTING... From left to right: St. Ninian’s S3 pupils Mairead McBride, Kitty Blair, Pranav Pai and Scarlett McCafferty unveil the mosaic they designed for Barrhead Water Works

Creative pupils from St. Ninian’s High School have unveiled their own mosaic at Barrhead Waterworks, a former derelict sewage works transformed into a community space. Eleven pupils from the school have been involved in the art project and the mosaic is now on display at the site. The pupils studied Public Art with teacher Katie Joice and came up with the idea of a mosaic and including their initials on the design. They conducted visits to the site over the course of the project and undertook research to understand how the public interacted with the area and what the Waterworks would

benefit from, before agreeing on their final design. Art and design teacher Katie Joice said: “We are proud to see the pupils’ artwork displayed prominently at Barrhead Waterworks. “As well as being a great achievement for the pupils, the mosaic really brings the space to life for the community.” The join art project was supported by East Renfrewshire Culture and Leisure and the council.

In Scotland all people over 50 are sent a kit to test their poo to help early detection of possible bowel cancers. The new “FIT” (Faecal Immunochemical Test) test gives a more accurate result which is not affected by medicines or food intake, indicates severity of hidden bleeding and importantly, is much easier to use than the original kits. Already the bowel screening teams are seeing increased return rates from people, increasing early detection, and survival from bowel cancer. So far 5,000 cancers have been diagnosed

and treated from 2.2 million people contacted to take the test. However I was surprised to learn that only 6 out of 10 people return samples, given that it is such a simple test. I wondered if sometimes people are simply too busy, and put the kits to one side, then forget to go back to them, or lose them? If you are one of these people, or know someone who hasn’t responded then it’s worth taking action. If you contact 0800 0121 833 or look up www.nhsinform. scot/bowelscreening and they will send a new kit. It’s never too late!

December 2018 | A Sense of Christmas

Try a sense of serendipity this

Christmas

Wandering around the local shops in search of inspiration it occurred to me that it is a far more pleasant experience than shuffling in the city or the mall (writes Nick Cowie). There’s the serendipity element of seeing someone or something you haven’t seen for a while and you can also allow yourself a wee pat on the back for helping the local economy because buying locally, according to research carried out by the Chambers of Commerce helps everyone.

A recent report stated: “Every pound that leaves your area is largely lost to your community, in fact research suggests that every single pound you spend gets recycled so well by local communities that it ends up being worth £3 to the wider community. Local business owners too are more likely to

get involved and to contribute to community efforts.” We’ve all heard the tales of hard times on the high street, but there’s strong evidence that more people are consciously deciding to eat at locally owned restaurants and buy from locally owned stores and shops.

December 2018 | Legal Matters

CALL TO DONATE GIFTS TO CHARITY Legal Matters The Avenue Shopping Centre in Newton Mearns has chosen a new charity partner for their Give a Gift to Santa Appeal this year. The centre is calling for donations from local people for the charity, Woman’s Aid South Lanarkshire & East Renfrewshire. Michelle McCabe, centre manager at The Avenue, said: “Woman’s Aid South Lanarkshire & East Renfrewshire needs your help to make Christmas special for children and families who have little or nothing under the tree on Christmas morning. “All new unwrapped toys and gifts are welcome and can be given to Santa when he visits our centre every Sunday throughout December and on Christmas Eve between noon and 4pm.”

In addition, shoppers can also donate gifts on other days at The Market Place, within The Avenue, which is acting as a drop-off point. Parents and children will also want to know that there are free visits to see Santa at The Avenue every Sunday afternoon and on Christmas Eve. Michelle added: “All children can visit Santa for free meetand-greets in the mall. We hope children will come along and that parents will also make donations to our partner charity.” See www.avenueshopping.co.uk or follow on Facebook.com/ avenueshoppingcentre

This month: SEPARATION Separating from a spouse or partner is always going to be emotionally difficult, whether the split is acrimonious or not. The decision to separate can have a number of significant consequences. As well as impacting on your living arrangements, you may have financial commitments or children together. In circumstances where there are children of the relationship, then reaching agreement regarding their care and welfare arrangements will generally take priority. This is fairly obvious. Secondary to that, but just as obvious, is addressing financial matters and division of any assets. Unfortunately, in the current climate it may well be that debts outweigh any

assets and therefore liability for those debts will require to be resolved. Once these big matters have been discussed, it is important that the less obvious tasks are not forgotten about. This can include ensuring you remember to change the terms of your will or changing the beneficiary of any death benefits from your pension. It is unlikely that it would be appropriate for a former partner to make decisions on your behalf should you lose capacity. As a result, a Power of Attorney may require to be revoked. These are only a couple of examples. Therefore, no matter the circumstances of separation it is important that you speak to your solicitor and receive relevant advice.

FESTIVE BLOOMS FOR ALL CRAFTY MUM

STARTS BUSINESS

Local mum Stephanie Kennedy has started her own craft business, making personalised gifts and Christmas decorations.

“Oh No! It’s Christmas” is the quirky title of Christine Ogle’s invitation floral demonstration at the Mearns and Whitecraigs Flower Club. Christine, a specialist wedding florist with 25 years of experience, is travelling from Morpeth, Northumberland, to give four demonstrations in Scotland.

like-minded people and have a chance to learn something new.

She will be in in Columba Hall, Broom Parish Church, Newton Mearns, on Wednesday December 12, from 2pm to 4pm.

The flower expert will show you how to make a decoration for your door, one for your dinner table and something on a larger scale. You can pick up hints and tips, and perhaps try something yourself for Christmas.

The flower club is keen to welcome both new and existing members. Whether you know about arranging flowers, or have never been to a flower club before, you will meet friendly,

As Christine says: “We all have one thing in common, we love flowers.”

After the demonstration, the designs will be raffled, followed by a cup of tea and a chance to chat.

The flower club has been meeting every second Wednesday of the month at Broom Parish Church for almost 55 years. All standards are catered for, from beginners to floral art prize winners. Visitors pay a small charge of £5, or you can choose to join with an annual subscription of £45. The club is part of the Scottish Association of Flower Arrangement Societies. For further information about Mearns and Whitecraigs Flower Club contact Cheryl Nixon on tel: 0141 636 6927. Becky Adlington’s SwimStars is launching into Holiday Inn, East Kilbride, to provide children aged 3-11 in the local community the best Learn to Swim opportunity possible. Becky Adlington’s SwimStars was formed by Britain’s most successful swimmer and fourtime Olympic Medallist, Rebecca Adlington. Becky set up her SwimStars programme in 2013 after learning that despite swimming being part of the National Curriculum, over 1 in 3 children in Britain currently leave primary school unable to swim. The programme now has over 9,500 children attending lessons every week across the UK.

Becky Adlington’s SwimStars prides itself on creating engaging lessons in a safe environment, so children can enjoy themselves while learning an essential life skill. Small class sizes, fully qualified teachers and online progression monitoring are just some of the ways in which Becky Adington’s SwimStars make the Learn to Swim journey the best it can possibly be – ensuring the process is convenient for parents and fun for children. Discussing the programme becoming available at Holiday Inn – East Kilbride, Becky says: “I’m thrilled to be expanding our programme even further into

Holiday Inn – East Kilbride. Our goal has always been to give all children the opportunity to learn to swim ‘the Becky way’, and this new venue will give so many more budding swimmers the chance to experience our programme. Swimming is an important life skill and we believe every child should have the opportunity to learn and love which is why our programme is delivered by experienced, enthusiastic teachers and has rewards values such as respect, friendship, determination, excellence and courage.”

LIFE-SAVING FIRST AID CLASSES

A first aid class in Newton Mearns this month is aimed at parents and grandparents. Helping Hands First Aid is run by Theresa Gallagher, who wanted to make first aid knowledge more accessible to the public. She was shocked by the number of people she knew who were nervous or fearful of the topic. Research shows it can be a lifesaver to be able to administer basic first aid techniques in emergency situations. Theresa, who gained 18 years’ experience in first aid while working for airline companies, said: “I became aware after speaking to many friends, especially new mums, that there was a lot of anxiety about first aid.

“I decided to run first aid classes for parents, parents-tobe, grandparents or carers of children that were much more accessible. They last only two hours and cost just ÂŁ20.â€? The next Helping Hands First Aid class will be at Newton Mearns Parish Church on Monday December 3, from 6pm to 8pm. She can also lead sessions in the comfort of your own home, “to make them easier to fit round busy family lifestylesâ€?. In the classes, Theresa demonstrates first aid choking, CPR, burns and bruises, and much more. See www.helpinghandsfirstaid.co.uk

POIGNANT POPPY DISPLAY wreaths and other poppies. This year, the number of poppies placed in the garden by RBL doubled.

Francis Samuels from Jewish Care Scotland was delighted with the response to his poppy appeal

Francis said: “We have had the most amazing response, resulting in 112 poppies being placed with the RBL in 2018. I’m proud and delighted regarding the way all those taking part have embraced this event. There has been both respect and the poignancy shown through the stories people recounted to me, of their relatives and friends contributions in various conflicts.

A charity volunteer has been delighted by the “heartwarming” response to a special poppy appeal as part of Remembrance Sunday. Francis Samuels works with Giffnock-based Jewish Care Scotland (JCS), a registered charity running a community day care centre that is available to senior people in Scotland. In 2017, Francis had the idea to enable members, volunteers and staff to engage in a more personal and direct way with the Remembrance Sunday commemorations.

He made an order for plywood Magen David Poppies from the Royal British Legion (RBL). The JCS participants inscribed personal messages on to the poppies in memory of family and friends, who served in World War I and future conflicts. Some 60 poppies were then taken to the RBL Memorial Garden, in George Square, Glasgow, and placed among

WORLD’S BIGGEST SNOWMAN

“The buses are well used throughout the ski season and we expect the first bus of the year on January 5 or 6 to be busy if the snow has arrived in Scotland.”

In 1999, in the state of Maine in America, the world’s biggest ever snowman (or to be more precise, snow woman) named Olympia stood at 122 feet, one inch high and broke the Guinness world record for the largest snowman.
