BOOBY BIRDS JUMP FOR CHARITY “Beatson is a force that is striving to help change the lives of those that are affected by cancer and give them the best love and support possible. You can see where your money is going when you donate to the Beatson.”

Courtney Flynn, from Newton Mearns, is a member of the 'Booby Birds' who took part in a skydive to raise money for West of Scotland Cancer Centre, The Beatson. Inset: Courtney shows off her certificate

A Newton Mearns woman who jumped out of a plane for charity is now in the throes of organising a ball for the same cause. Courtney Flynn, 29, is one of the “Booby Birds”, a group of women who took part in a skydive near the east coast town of St Andrews for the West of Scotland Cancer Centre, The Beatson in October. Next month, she will also host the Beatson Booby Birds Ball at the Engine Works in Glasgow’s west end. The cancer charity is close to her heart. Courtney, who works for an events agency as an account

manager, said: “I have friends and family who have been treated at the Beatson, including my gran when she was alive. “Like a lot of people, I have a link with the Beatson so when my friend Charlene – who works for the Beatson – said she was organising the skydive I said, ‘I’ll do it.’ I think I was one of the first people to sign up for it. “I knew what I was getting myself into because I did a parachute

jump when I was in Australia five years ago.” In total 17 Booby Birds took part in the skydive. However, not content with taking part in just one charity challenge, Courtney then decided to organise the fundraising ball for The Beatson, which will take place on January 31. She said: “Our group wants to raise as much money as we can and we hope to smash our £100,000 target. Personally, I want to raise £10,000 at the ball alone.

As part of Beatson Booby Birds Ball there will be an Oscars theme and Courtney revealed they will be handing out awards. She said: “I am looking forward to the ball and raising as much money as we can. It’s going well so far.” The Booby Birds have so far raised more than £60,000 towards their fundraising total. To donate, see www.justgiving. com/fundraising/courtney-flynn. Tickets for the Beatson Booby Bird Ball are priced at £70. Angela O'Donnell, from Newton Mearns, completed the Berlin Marathon raising money for Prostate Cancer UK

A self-employed care worker from Newton Mearns ran a marathon for a poignant charity – just months after breaking her ankle. Angela O’Donnell was delighted to finish the 26.2-mile Berlin Marathon and raise £700 for Prostate Cancer UK. She had only been able to re-commence training for the marathon five months before. Angela, who has four grown-up children, said: “I was delighted that I managed to make it to the marathon, cross the finish line and collect my medal. “For many months this year, I had been worried that I would never run again, let alone manage a long-distance race.”

It was in January that Angela, who trains with Giffnock North Athletics Club, slipped while on a training run with friends and broke her ankle. She required surgery and pins and then endured many months of recovery. She said: “I was out for quite a while and it was frustrating but I did my physiotherapy exercises and swam to get back in shape. I tried to stay positive. “I was sad because I had been planning to do a longer distance

event, the 53-mile Highland Fling on the West Highland Way in April, and it was disappointing to have to give up my entry for that. “Thankfully, in the end, I recovered well and I felt really fortunate to be able to head to Berlin for the marathon. I went for a medal and came back with a medal and that made me happy.” Angela explains her choice of charity. She said: “One of my relatives passed away after being diagnosed with prostate cancer so it is a cause close to my heart. I am pleased I could raise some money towards this charity.”

WISHES COME TRUE AT HOTEL

FROM AS LITTLE AS

The Busby Hotel welcomed children and their families from the When You Wish Upon a Star charity to enjoy a Disney afternoon tea. Twenty families from across Scotland travelled to Busby to be treated to a day of Disney characters, music, dancing, games, prizes, food, face painting and fun. The children made a fantastic effort for the day and arrived suitably dressed for the occasion, with colourful princesses, Disney characters and superheroes. The Busby Hotel team also transformed themselves into characters, such as Elsa from

Frozen, Spiderman and Scooby Doo. The Gough family, who attended the Busby afternoon tea, said: “We spent the afternoon like Royalty. We had a lovely afternoon tea in the company of some awesome characters who worked their socks off to give our children a wonderful memory. “To say that an event like this has a positive impact on children who are fighting the battle of their lives is an understatement. Our whole family has been recharged and refuelled by the love in the room.”

£38

When You Wish Upon a Star helps to bring smiles to children aged four to 17 who live with a life-threatening illness by giving them memories to treasure. The Busby team fundraise by arranging events, such as a Ben Nevis climb and a cycle around Millport. Denise Imrie, general manager at the Busby Hotel, said: “This annual event is a highlight in our diary. We’ve got to know a lot of the families and it’s great to welcome them back every year. “We also like meeting the new wish families too. We’re very touched and humbled by the children and families who come to visit us and if we can bring smiles to faces, we’ve done what we set out to do."

TAKE STEPS TAKE A SEAT FOR A CHAT THIS WINTER

Many people struggle to find the motivation to get outdoors for much-needed exercise at this time of year. If this is you, why not join a weekly Walk the Block group? The free walks take place on Wednesdays at 7pm from Clarkston Hall Clarkston Road and offer a chance to enjoy a short walk with like-minded people. This month, the meet-ups are on December 4, 11 and 18. Children are welcome, but they must be accompanied by an adult. See “Walk the Block East Ren” on Facebook or email: walktheblockeastren@gmail.com.

A local business has launched a new initiative that aims to combat loneliness and isolation in the community. Coop Funeralcare and Food Stores have organised for a “CHAT bench” to be installed outside the Broom Road East food store in Newton Mearns. CHAT stands for Chat Help Ask Talk and it’s hoped that the bench will encourage passing people to have a sit down and talk to others. The bench was paid for by funds that the Coop has for Community Events. A short ceremony to launch the concept was held in October and attended by local

JOIN A GROUP ROAD RIDE individually or in pairs to come together because it is good fun riding together in a group. “I would say that our rides are a little faster than a social-paced ride but it is not all about racing and training like being in a bike club.

It might be winter but a cycling guide is still leading keen riders on weekly road outings from East Renfrewshire to East Ayrshire. Local organiser Neil Smith (pictured left) – a qualified British Cycling Guided Rides volunteer – can take up to eight people on rides of up to 50 miles. Dubbed the Kings and Queens of Kilmaurs, the cycling group sets off for Kilmaurs and Fenwick from Parklands Country Club in Newton Mearns on Saturdays at 10am. The guided ride follows the cycle lane down the A77 and extends to more than 25 miles. Riders

“We travel at a sedate pace and it is mostly on the A77 cycle paths so we’re away from busy traffic a lot of the time.”

should expect to spend at least two hours in the saddle.

As well as improving your fitness, the group rides offer the chance to meet new people and boost your cycling confidence.

Described as “brisk loop” and “challenging”, the adults-only ride follows a picturesque countryside route and is one of 27 guided rides in Scotland affiliated to British Cycling.

The rides are free to join and this month they take place on December 7, 14, 21 and 28. The Kings and Queens set off at 10am and meet at the outdoor seating area at Michael’s Bar and Bistro.

Neil, of Newton Mearns, said: “I have done 16 guided rides this year and I am trying to encourage the cyclists who are going out

GIVE A GIFT HOMES BUILD CHARITY BOOST TO SANTA Gardens and Hazeldene Lea have been purchased.

A campaign to Give a Gift to Santa returns to The Avenue Shopping Centre in Newton Mearns. Shoppers are being encouraged to donate a gift to Santa for children and families in the local area in need this Christmas. The Salvation Army will then distribute these donated gifts throughout the community in time for Christmas. Donate your unwrapped gifts on Sundays to Santa and before December 15. Gift donations can also be dropped off at The Market Place in The Avenue Monday to Saturday until December 14 during opening hours. Children can also visit Santa for free every Sunday between noon and 4pm this month at the centre.

Russell Macmillan, the founder of ER Good Causes, visited the development to accept the donation and talk to the teams about where the money is going. He said: “We’re extremely grateful for this funding boost from CALA Homes and Taylor Wimpey.

From left to right: Gillian Lamont, Sales Executive at Taylor Wimpey, Russell Macmillan, founder of East Renfrewshire Good Causes and Angela O’Hara, Sales Consultant at CALA Homes (West)

A local charity is delighted to have received a funding boost thanks to a partnership with a consortium of homebuilders. CALA Homes (West) and Taylor Wimpey West Scotland, the team behind a Newton Mearns’ development, donated £1800 to East Renfrewshire Good Causes. It is the first of several donations to be made throughout the inaugural phase of the development. The building company pledged to make a £50 donation to the charity for each house purchased at Maidenhill

within the first phase of the development in 2018. Now with construction underway and the first few buyers living at the development, the initial tranche of funding has been handed out. The grassroots charity, which focuses on providing support to a range of worthy causes across East Renfrewshire, will receive a total of £9250 by the time all 185 homes within Westfield

“It’s an especially meaningful partnership as the money is coming from a local development and will go directly into funding projects and causes across East Renfrewshire. “We’ve done a lot of fantastic work in the local community since I started the charity 12 years ago. Thanks to this donation we’ll be able to continue our important outreach.” Angela O’Hara, sales consultant, at CALA Homes (West), said: “Giving back to the local area is important to us so we’re delighted to hand over this first funding to East Renfrewshire Good Causes.” See www.maidenhill.scot and www.ergoodcauses.co.uk.

CYCLIST RUARAIDH WINS BRONZE

Legal Matters with Gill Bowman BA LLB

This month: ALTERNATIVE DISPUTE RESOLUTION Mediation is a form of dispute resolution that is an alternative to instructing solicitors to raise court proceedings. It can be a practical and effective method of resolving matters, so long as all participants approach the process voluntarily and with an open mind.

solution to be aired without the fear of anything that is said later being used in court proceedings; in the event a resolution is not found.

It allows people to find their own solution by coming together and discussing their respective views in a calm and constructive manner. The benefit of using a solicitor mediator is that you are then able to draw on their legal knowledge.

The only exception to this rule is in relation to any factual financial details exchanged between the parties, meaning specific values of assets and not the discussion regarding possible division of them. Mediation can assist in any number of situations from family breakdown to neighbour or workplace disputes.

The issues discussed and information provided during mediation is confidential. The reason for confidentiality is so as to encourage open discussions and allow for every possible

If you think mediation may assist you in some way then it may be worthwhile discussing the process with your solicitor. Legal Aid can be made available to fund the process in certain circumstances.

A determined young cyclist from Newton Mearns has scooped third place overall in an annual racing series. Ruaraidh Macpherson, who rides with the Johnstone Jets Youth Cycling Club, won a bronze in the under-eights category of the Scottish Cycling West Youth Circuit Race Series 2019. Seven more Jets riders won awards, too. Johnstone Jets is part of the Johnstone Wheelers Cycling Club. The series of seven races is organised by cycling clubs in the west of Scotland and is open to all riders irrespective of their club membership. The races take place on closed circuits throughout the summer in Bellahouston Park in Glasgow; Kames Motorsport Circuit in Muirkirk, Ayrshire; and at the Scottish Fire and Rescue Headquarters in Cambuslang. Since September the keen young rider has also raced four offroad cyclocross events and won four out of four. This year, he completed the 45mile Pedal for Scotland event, from Glasgow to Edinburgh, with his mum Claire. Together they raised more than £600 for Pancreatic Cancer Scotland in memory of Claire’s mum and Ruaraidh’s gran, Eileen Longmuir.

CANICROSS WORLD CHAMP A talented teenage canicross runner from Newton Mearns has been crowned the junior world champion of 2019.

Duncan Robinson and his dog Rocket were crowned Canicross World Champions in Sweden

Duncan Robinson, 17, scooped his prestigious win racing with Team GB at the International Federation of Sleddog Sports (IFSS) World Championships in Sweden in October along with his dog Rocket. The pair ran two races of just under 5km in a total winning time of 26:02:08. They were just 0.01 second ahead of silver medallist and English competitor Rowan Saxton.

internationally and so I am really pleased to have taken gold and silver medals in world and European championships.

Just a few days earlier, Duncan and Rocket also took silver in the International Canicross Federation (ICF) European Championships, held in Belgium. This time, Duncan’s friend – and rival – Rowan took the gold.

“I have been racing with Rocket, a cross breed, for years and he is the best partner I could hope for. I am very happy with our times, too, although I hope I can become faster.”

Duncan, who is studying at Glasgow Kelvin College, said: “It was my first time competing

Duncan started canicross as a family activity seven years ago. They joined sessions organised

by Cani-Fit at Cathkin Braes. His parents and siblings also enjoy the sport. Duncan says: “It’s such a great sport and Rocket loves it, too. You can’t force a dog to race but Rocket just wants to be out and running fast. I enjoy spending time with Rocket and competing with him. I hope to defend my world champion title next year.” Anne Graham is Duncan’s proud grandmother. She said: “We are so pleased for Duncan and he has achieved all this while also studying at college and holding down two part-time jobs.”

COUNCIL PLANS FOR WINTER ROADS

The council has revealed safety measures for keeping drivers safe on the region’s roads this winter. There will be 4500 tonnes of salt available to treat roads across the authority with 190 miles of road highlighted as priority routes. A total of 339 public grit bins, including 17 larger community bins, have also been replenished to allow residents to access grit for their local roads and pavements. Environment Convener, Councillor Alan Lafferty, said: “Residents can find out where their nearest grit bin is by visiting our website. Throughout the winter our social media channels will provide regular updates on what we are doing.” See www.eastrenfrewshire.gov. uk/winterprep.

A primary teacher in Newton Mearns sprang into action to celebrate her school winning a national sports award. Primary One teacher and Commonwealth gymnast Miss Regan performed a series of somersaults at the school assembly as Crookfur Primary was awarded the Gold Award from sportscotland. Amy Regan congratulated the school and children for their commitment to sport, telling the pupils: “Sport can take you on so many amazing journeys. I used to train for 30 hours every week and competed in the Commonwealth Games in Delhi and Glasgow. I’ve

trained all over the world, including Russia, Canada and America. “Sport can help you to make lots of new friends, keep you fit and teach you lots of new skills.” Crookfur Primary in Newton Mearns was one of four East Renfrewshire schools to achieve the prestigious gold award in recognition of their commitment to sport this year. A total of 20 East Renfrewshire schools have achieved gold status over the last five years, with support from sportscotland and the Active Schools’ team at East Renfrewshire Culture and Lesiure, who have dedicated co-ordinators for each school in the region. Anthony McReavy, of East Renfrewshire Culture and Leisure, said: “We are thrilled that four East Renfrewshire schools received a gold rating this year for their commitment to encouraging sports activities. “Well done to all the pupils, teachers and staff involved and thank you for your efforts. Taking part in sporting activities can improve mental and physical health, as well as boost confidence and motivation and it has such a positive impact on pupils and the school.” The School Sport Award is a national initiative and funded by the National Lottery.

HAVE YOURSELF A VERY HEALTHY CHRISTMAS…?

This festive season many people will gain weight, tipping themselves over into obesity, joining the 26% of the UK population who are already obese. The tradition of excess food and drink, which specialises in high fat and sugar foods (think mince pies and chocolates!), at Christmas unfortunately has health costs. Obesity leads to heart disease, arthritis, depression, poor sleep and diabetes, to name but a few diseases, but fortunately it is something which can be avoided or changed without medication. “Lifestyle Medicine” is a growing movement which tries to address lifestyle related choices and illness by helping

people regain control and enjoy better health, to avoid illness and prescriptions. The general idea is that time spent by doctors or nurses, either one-to-one or in groups, used to enable and empower people to make healthier choices, can slowly change peoples’ ideas and may be a long term way to reduce the burden on the NHS. The Lifestyle Medicine Global Alliance is an international group promoting this focussed approach. Recently the NHS Chief Executive said we need to “get serious about obesity or bankrupt the NHS” Maybe it’s time we changed our Christmas menus for some healthier options!

The new owners of an independent pharmacy in Newton Mearns have been keen to create a friendly one-stop shop for health care and specialist advice. As well as the usual services that customers might expect, such as prescriptions and health product sales, Mark and Elaine Aggleton have launched a programme of “added extra” services at Mearns Pharmacy on Ayr Road. To start with, did you know the pharmacy, which is run by experienced manager Lynn Muir, has a free community prescription collection and delivery service? There is also an in-store travel vaccination clinic and, this winter, customers can access a single vaccine for flu prevention.

Another service is the HPV vaccine. Elaine explains: “As of this summer, boys as well as girls in S1 are being given the HPV vaccine. “The vaccine has been shown to protect people against many cancers. For boys that have missed out in recent years, we offer a ‘catch-up’ vaccine.” Mearns Pharmacy also has an innovative in-store GP service where you can talk to a private consultant via Skype about your health concerns. Elaine adds: “We hope that locals will come to see our outlet as more than just an ordinary pharmacy.”

December 2019 | Christmas All Wrapped Up

S A M T S I R H C

ALL

WRAPPED UP

We all know somebody who has everybody in their address book “sorted” for Christmas gifts by about September – selected, bought, wrapped and labelled. At the other extreme we all know plenty of people who run round the shops in a state of near panic with only days to go – which is why so many shops stay open later on Christmas Eve: they know there are desperate potential buyers out there without a clue of what to buy for Auntie Jean or cousin Jimmy. On the one hand most of us don’t want to bowl through a catalogue of names and simply tick them off mechanistically – to be truly successful a gift has to have some element of spontaneity and individuality about it – but on the other hand if you have several people to buy presents for you can only put off the critical decision for so long before that desperation factor clicks in.

One solution, for at least some gifts, is to buy entitlements which are useful but not dull. It could be an excursion in a hot air balloon, to be “cashed in” at any time over the next year, or it could be as simple as gift tokens for something really special… the sort of thing the person concerned wouldn’t normally treat themselves to.

that it should be enjoyable and fun… a pleasant surprise, not an obligation.

Don’t, however, buy someone membership of a gym – that could be taken entirely the wrong way, and would also give the recipient a sense of obligation – or a box set of “Teach Yourself Spanish” lessons… again, it carries more than a hint that the person concerned should be doing something “useful”, whereas the whole point of a present is

However if that special young person has some other existing interest – it could be cycling, say, or swimming – you may be able to find a gift that will lend that activity some value-added experience, and again you may find that if you buy vouchers you can leave it to the recipient to choose the item they most want or need.

With youngsters the problem of getting exactly the “right” present can be even more daunting, because so much of young people’s attention span is wrapped up in electronics, whether phones or games.

Meanwhile, again with young people, if you are truly stumped you can always go for the old fall-back option of simply handing over some cash, but perhaps earmarked for something special – say a contribution towards a foreign holiday to a place they’ve always wanted to visit but never been able to afford. These “gifts in kind” can dramatically cut the number of difficult shopping choices you have to make, allowing you to focus on getting something uniquely suited to the handful of people who really need to be catered for in a very specific way… your husband, wife or partner isn’t going to appreciate something dull and utilitarian, and the gift has to say “I really tried”.

the nonmainstream at an affordable price.

That is where local shopping can sometimes pay unexpected dividends. If you don’t have a lot of cash to spend try looking in charity shops, where you’ll sometimes find remarkably individual items, from ornaments to jewellery, that would be hard to find and horribly expensive in mainstream shops.

Separate your food shopping expeditions from your gift-buying trips, and give yourself so many hours to come up with a set number of gift choices on any particular occasion, don’t leave it until December 24, and it should all start to make sense as the great day approaches.

CANCER DROP-IN SESSIONS Outwith the Friday drop-in times, people affected by cancer are able to make use of the library area as a place to sit or for browsing or taking away any of the Macmillan booklets from an extensive range. No appointment is needed and people are welcome simply to drop in. A spokesperson for Macmillan said: “Our charity is in the process of developing a number of local information places and drop-in services. The Macmillan East Ren Cancer Information and Support Drop In sessions meet every Friday at Clarkston Library

Clarkston Library has become the base for a new support drop-in service for people diagnosed with cancer. An area in the library on Clarkston Road has been set aside and is used for Macmillan East Ren Cancer Information and Support Drop In sessions every Friday, from 10.30am to 2.30pm. During this time, trained volunteers are available to offer a friendly listening ear to anyone affected by cancer, whether it is people living with

a cancer diagnosis, their family or friends. The space offers a cosy and relaxed environment to talk over a cup of tea or coffee. The charity can also refer individuals to local and national services, including Macmillan’s Move More physical activity programme, complementary therapies, financial advice or help for carers.

“As well as Clarkston, we have another new service at Barrhead Foundry, which will start this month on Wednesdays from 10.30am to 12.30pm.” Other Macmillan information points in East Renfrewshire, including Mearns Library, Giffnock Library, Neilston Library and Thornliebank Library will be opened in 2020. For details email: macmillan@ ercultureandleisure.org or call 0141 577 4149. NEW CO-OP ON OLD SITE A new Co-op is set to bring fresh life to waste ground that has been unused for years. Work is on-going at the new branch in Newton Mearns, which will be known as Mearnskirk. The site was formerly home to a Chinese restaurant that closed in 2013 and was then ravaged by fire in 2017, before being demolished. The new Co-op is part of a programme of opening 100 food stores during 2019. In addition, the retailer is providing major makeovers for a further 200 stores. The Co-op’s combined £200 million store investment could lead to 1500 new jobs across the UK.

CAN YOU HOST AFTERNOON TEA?

A charity that is dedicated to tackling loneliness and isolation among older people is looking for volunteers. Re-engage in Clarkston and Newton Mearns would like to find local people who will open up their home and provide an afternoon tea on a Sunday in 2020.

two hours for six to eight older guests and three or four drivers.

The aim is to give isolated older people in the community a chance to meet others and to enjoy a chat, a cuppa and home-baking.

The only requirements for the volunteering role is a large teapot, a downstairs (ground floor) toilet and a house with easy access. Hosts are also asked to provide enough seating for eight older people.

Lisa McTaggart, the development officer for Re-engage in the west of Scotland, said: “We are appealing for volunteers who can spare one afternoon a year to provide afternoon tea in their home. “Hosts provide a warm welcome and a simple afternoon tea lasting

“Often hosts involve family and friends and welcome two or three generations.”

Lisa added: “Our hosts commit to one tea party a year or possibly more if they want to do so.” If you are interested in volunteering contact lisa. mctaggart@reengage.org.uk. Also see: www.reengage.org.uk.

JUNIOR PARKRUN TURNS THREE WINTER

WONDERLAND

The Rouken Glen Junior Parkrun are looking for additional volunteers

A special anniversary cake was baked for the occasion

A junior parkrun celebrated its third birthday recently with almost 150 youngsters helping to collect donations for a local foodbank. The first Rouken Glen junior parkrun took place in October 2016 with a group of youngsters running a timed route of two kilometres. Three years on and the free run continues to go from strength to strength with more than 100 children aged four to 14 regularly turning up on a Sunday at 9.30am. In celebration of the parkrun’s third birthday in the park on October 27, 149 children ran, walked, skipped, hopped the course, with many decked out in fancy dress. At the same time, members of the SE Glasgow Foodbank were on

hand to collect donations. There were enough food products to fill the back of a car. The foodbank has been operating since 2011 and relies on the support of local people. It has supplied more than 11,000 three-day emergency food parcels to people in crisis in the last year alone. Like all parkruns, the weekly event relies on volunteers from the local community and the Rouken Glen group is keen to recruit more people to help out each Sunday. Suzanne Cotton, one of the run directors, says: “We are always happy to hear from people who

can help out at our junior parkrun. There is a range of different roles and everyone is given full training on the day. Being a volunteer is also a lot of fun.” The Rouken Glen junior parkrun is one of 17 across Scotland and aims to encourage youngsters to enjoy being active in a fun and relaxed environment. Kids can be as competitive or non-competitive as they wish and they can run, walk or even hop their way around the traffic-free course. The runs are free to enter but participants must register with parkrun so they have a barcode for use on the day. See www.parkrun.org.uk/ roukenglen-juniors and “Rouken Glen junior parkrun” on Facebook.

FREE DRAMA FOR SCHOOLS

A performing arts and education business is calling out to local primary schools in a bid to provide free drama sessions for pupils. Vision Perform would like to hear from teachers in schools in Newton Mearns, Clarkston, Busby and surrounding areas. The company will then arrange for a day of free drama classes at each school in January or February. Hannah McElnea, a qualified teacher and performing arts professional, is the founder of Vision Perform. She believes there is a huge value in the partnership of performing arts and education for children.

values to improve the life-skills of children. “Taking part in performing arts helps children in so many ways, such as improving confidence and problem-solving and also promoting more effective communication. “We would like to give more children the chance to benefit from the performing arts and our way of doing this is to offer free day-long sessions at local primary schools.”

Vision Perform launched five She says: “At Vision Perform we offer performing arts sessions that years ago with term-time classes in South Ayrshire and has since are combined with educational

extended to offer sessions across the rest of Ayrshire and now in Newton Mearns and Giffnock. The classes are usually paid for but the latest school offer is for free sessions. Hannah says: “We usually manage to do around nine 30-minute fast-paced but high quality sessions over the course of a school day. This means as many pupils as possible can be offered the chance to enjoy taking part in performing arts. “The sessions also give teachers the chance to see how they can incorporate the arts into the school day. I hope that local schools will get in touch with us.” See www.visionperform.com and email: info@visionperform.com.

BOOKS BY TWO LOCAL AUTHORS Books make great Christmas presents, especially if they just happen to be by a talented local author – and here are brief details of a couple of newly-released works ideal as a special stocking filler. Sports journalist Robin ScottElliot has ventured into a magical world of adventure in early 18th century Russia with The Tzar’s Curious Runaways, a story which could have been inspired by some wonderful fairy tale by Pushkin. Set in what was then the recently-built St Petersburg, in the year 1725, the book’s

heroine, Katinka Dashkova, is a superb ballerina, but has to run for her Robin Scott-Elliot life – with friends Alexei the Giant and Nikolai the Dwarf – when Tzar Peter the Great expires, forcing them to flee the Winter Palace and the late ruler’s Circus of Curiosities. Described as a mystical tale with an enthralling blend of history and fiction the story follows the friends intrepid adventure through adversity in a land where witches, wolves and magic are never very far away. The Tzar’s Curious Runaways, can be purchased at Waterstons: www.waterstones.com/ book/the-tzars-curiousrunaways/robin-scottelliot/9781911427131.

By sharp contrast there’s “adventure” of a very different kind in Dr Stephen Hearns’ Peak Performance under Pressure: lessons from a helicopter rescue doctor. Drawing on 20 years of leadership experience in high pressure emergency medical and rescue situations, the author describes the consequences of pressure, both positive and negative, and teaches the strategies we need to attain states of peak performance.

ambulance clinicians, firefighters, military personnel, rescue teams and business Stephen Hearns leaders – and in fact anyone hoping to improve their own performance during high-pressure situations. If you’ve ever wondered just how the experts cope with the phenomenal challenges life throws their way you will find this a fascinating insight into the disciplines which help rescuers turn potential disaster into lifesaving success.

Using first hand accounts of highpressure situations within emergency medicine, the book covers relevant aspects such as cognitive aids, teamwork, organisational culture and tactical leadership.
