JOIN BEAT THE STREET FOR GOOD HEALTH Players expressed that the main benefits of taking part in Beat the Street are “having fun” and “exploring the local area”. Dr William Bird, CEO and founder of Intelligent Health, said: “If we want to improve the health and wellbeing of the country we need to be ambitious, provide a clear narrative to get people active and support them on their journey. “Physical activity has more health benefits than any other single intervention and is the means to a healthy community.
Local people are invited to join an outdoors health challenge that is shown to boost activity and get communities exploring more. Beat the Street aims to encourage people of all ages to walk, run or cycle around community streets. Participants have a Beat the Street card that contains radiofrequency identification (RFID) technology, which they tap against sensors called Beat Boxes located on lamp-posts. Every sensor tapped with the card earns points. It’s possible

Beat the Street starts in Newton Mearns and Barrhead on February 15 and will continue until March 29, 2019.
On average, across all Beat the Street projects, the proportion of people meeting the physical activity guidelines increased from 40% to 50%. In 2015, 1 out of every 7 adults said they were inactive at the start of Beat the Street.

SOVEREIGN BLINDS Robert Waldinger
Jessica Jackley
Orchardhill Parish Church, venue for the talk
An evening of fascinating talks with a common theme of “how to be happy”, followed by thoughtful discussion, takes place this month. Orchardhill Parish Church in Giffnock plays host to the event, which will feature the showing of two TED Talks, the first by Robert Waldinger, a Psychiatrist, Psychoanalyst and Zen priest and the second by Jessica Jackley, co-founder of Kiva.org, which provides loans to cashstrapped entrepreneurs. Waldinger is in charge of a long-running study of adult life, The Harvard Study of Adult Development. Over 75 years, it has produced tens of thousands of pages of information and the research has drawn many
conclusions about people’s health and happiness. Jackley set up Kiva after hearing about micro loans during a talk by Nobel Peace Prize winner, Muhammad Yunus. She was so inspired that she travelled to Africa to meet poor entrepreneurs and to learn about their needs. Kiva rose from her learning, which she emphasises is based on listening to people’s stories and participating in them, by creating a relationship of dignity, respect, hope and optimism. Similarly to
Waldinger, her work has taught her what is important in life. The TED Talks evening, which is free to attend on February 7 at 7.30pm, is part of a regular programme by the church called Thinking Allowed. Rev Grant Barclay, the church minister, said: “Since its earliest days, the church has been a place of exploration and discovery leading to fullness of life. “Our discussions on TED talks are open to all and will provide a local opportunity to talk about important matters in which we're all interested.” For further information about Orchardhill’s programme of talks see: www.orchardhill.org.uk/ whats-on/lectures.

friends, meetings, activities and for learning new skills in organised classes. The success lies in the community service being largely designed by its end users, with new suggestions always welcome. Francesca Mckay, the Development Lead, said: “We have been overwhelmed by the positive feedback from people in Newton Mearns. So many people have told us that this is exactly what is needed in the area and we hope that more and more people will come and chat to us
about how they’d like to use the space. “We’re keen as well to hear from volunteers who would like to help to run the space. The Market Place is all about building community.” Over the past six months, the hub has built up a daily programme of different activities, including crafting, bridge, knitting, sewing and a book group. The hub shop sells the work that has been created in some of the groups, as well as secondhand books. The revenue raised helps the project. senior citizens that enjoys blethering about “all manner of topics” is inviting new members to join in. The Cuppa and Blether group meets in the Greenhouse Café at Eastwood Clinic and Care Centre, Drumby Crescent, twice a week. The group was started around 18 months ago by Irene Brown and Shirley Ash, both from the East Renfrewshire Health and Social Care Partnership, along with nonagenarian Donald Ross, the group’s most senior member. Willy Scott, of Clarkston, is part of the group. He said: “We do not

have an agenda or programme of topics, rather we just idly chat. “The group chats about all manner of topics, from the price of fish, gas and electricity to the President of the United States. It’s quite a portfolio of topics in fact. “We would like to see more people coming along to join us.” As an example, one of the members was told about the group by his daughter-in-law on the basis he could meet new friends. His initial thoughts were, “Do I need any more friends.” He
thought he probably didn’t but he came along anyway and enjoyed the banter so much that he is now a regular. The group meets at the Greenhouse Café, which is run by Steven and Mandy Jacobs, at 11am on Tuesdays and Fridays. The chat continues until about 1pm. The group is free to join although you do need to buy your own tea, coffee and other refreshments. To find out more see FaceBook: Blether Cuppa Greenhouse, email cuppa.blether@virginmedia.com or call 07762 256276.
Only 3% of people in Scotland give blood and the nation is constantly in need of blood for a wide variety of reasons. Blood donations can be required following trauma, during general surgery and childbirth or to support cancer and leukaemia treatment. Giving just a pint can save or improve the lives of up to three people. The Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service will be at Clarkston Hall on February 24 from noon to 3.30pm and February 25 from 2pm to 3.30pm and 5pm to 7.30pm. See www.scotblood.co.uk

KEITH’S MUNRO PHOTOS JOY A Glasgow southside photographer is thrilled to see many of his images published in a new book about Scotland’s highest mountains. Explore the Munros: Your Guide to 50 of Scotland’s Most Iconic Mountains is written by Robert Wight (pictured) and features photos from Keith Fergus. Keith said: “The images that appear in the book were taken over a period of around seven years, mainly to illustrate articles and guidebooks on the outdoors. “However, seeing them all together in the book, combined with Robert’s superb words, is incredibly satisfying and something I could not have envisaged a decade ago when I took the plunge into the world of freelance outdoor photography.”
round of the 282 Munros. He said: “I wanted to publish a book that was different from a regular guide book. Although the book does include short route descriptions of 50 of the Munros, there are lots of facts and interesting tales as well, not just about the hills but also the surrounding areas. “It’s a book that people can pick up and read, as well as browse
through, to find out all sorts of things about Scotland and the Munros.” A foreword has been written by leading walks writer and presenter Cameron McNeish. Keith, of Neilston, East Renfrewshire, said: “The book looks fantastic and offers something a little different to the other Munro books already out there. “Hopefully the images and words capture the essence of what draws so many people to our mountains and how lucky we are to be able to explore such a magnificent and diverse landscape.” Explore the Munros is priced £16.99 in paperback at the DC Thomson shop (www.dcthomsonshop.co.uk) and at Amazon, among other outlets.

SNAP FOR YOUNG PEOPLE
Late News Monday 4th
A community youth club invites young people from P7 to S3 to join weekly sessions for a range of fun and educational activities. The SNAP Community Youth Club takes place at Greenbank Parish Church in Clarkston on Saturdays from 7pm to 9pm.
Renfrewshire, which indicated that many young people in the wider Clarkston community were socially lonely.
The youngsters have an input into the activities they would like to participate in and currently they enjoy crafts, basketball, netball, hockey, badminton, table tennis, music, baking, social events and games.
It was felt this was being perpetuated by the lack of opportunities for young people to meet and establish friendships outside of school hours.
The group was established in 2017 in response to research conducted by the church and validated by information from Voluntary Action East
Other studies show that loneliness and social isolation are harmful to young people’s health and make them more prone to depression. The youth club is funded by the Church of Scotland’s Go for

This month: MEDICINE BY NUMBERS...?
FLEAPITS & PALACES TALK AT NTS GROUP
A cinema and theatres expert will be giving a talk at a local National Trust for Scotland group this month. Gary Painter has been part of the research and recording of Scottish cinemas and theatres – the “palaces of entertainment” – for more than 15 years. Cinemas were once a commonplace sight on our high streets and in the last century, more than 1000 cinemas existed in Scotland. They are considered to be a part of the social history of our country, including their architecture. The cinemas ranged from simple to highly decorative, with Scotland regarded as having some of the most architecturally diverse buildings of anywhere in the world.
Many cinemas were sadly demolished and those that have survived are either still in use, have been adopted for other purposes, or are actively being restored. The talk, entitled Fleapits and Palaces: Scottish Cinema Architecture, will be given to the NTS Eastwood and District Members’ Centre in Clarkston Hall on February 14 at 7.30pm. Evelyn Simmons, the chair of the group, said: “We are always delighted to welcome visitors to our talks, and of course, new members.” See www.ntscentres.org.uk/eastwood and www.scottishcinemas.org.
QUALITY KITCHEN FACELIFTS
“You doctors love your numbers!” a patient once remarked to me. On reflection he was partly correct, and sometimes it might seem we are obsessed with figures of blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, weight, units of alcohol etc, etc... However, a bit like painting by numbers, although these help give us an outline, we also realise that the numbers can get in the way of seeing the bigger picture. For GPs this means seeing the whole person, understanding who and what is important to them, and helping them makes sense of information as individuals. Over the past
few decades, medicine has become more “evidencebased”, which helps ensure that the treatments on offer have been shown to make a real difference to the quality and quantity of people’s lives. This has resulted in old treatments sometimes being abandoned as we realise that some have actually caused more harm than good, and this requires large studies collecting thousands of numbers! Fresh information keeps us updated with the latest guidelines which ensure patients get the most effective treatments and advice. So, yes, we do love our numbers... but they are only a means to an end!

THE
EAST RENFREWSHIRE GOLF CLUB 1922
Local News | February 2019
CLUB HAS A BRIGHT FUTURE
East Renfrewshire Golf Club, designed by James Baird in 1922 has been regularly rated the best in the region
A club that has been rated as the best in the region reports that it is not resting on its laurels and wants “the best to get better”. East Renfrewshire Golf Club is voted at number one by independent world golf rating website, Top 100 Golf Courses (www.top100golfcourses.com). The historic club, with an acclaimed course built in 1922 by the esteemed James Baird, has continued to make substantial investments both to the course and the expertise in running the club. Danny Welsh,
the Club Manager, joined two years ago, while Paul Hampsey, the Course manager, arrived in November. Danny said: “We are delighted that we have been in number one place in East Renfrewshire for several years now but we are not sitting back, rather we are investing further to make the club even better for our members and visitors.
“We have been pro-active in developing the course, with site work completed on the 17th, 18th and 1st , as well as the bunkers at the 3rd. We have also been facing some of the challenges of running a golf club in a modern era with a range of great concepts.” The club now offers attractive and flexible Pure Golf packages, family memberships, a junior coaching programme and free junior memberships for those with parents at the club. Looking ahead, the club has plans to carry out clubhouse
refurbishments, make stronger links with local businesses and is looking ahead to its centenary year. Danny said: “It is an exciting time at the club with lots of positive changes taking place. "We believe the future is bright for East Renfrewshire Golf Club and we have great plans for augmenting the member and visitor experience. “We believe that a well run club is a great club to be a member of.” See www.eastrengolfclub.co.uk for further information.

The Physio Room
Legal Matters with Gill Bowman BA LLB
PARKINSON’S DISEASE AND EXERCISE Every person living with Parkinson’s Disease knows the importance of exercise and the benefits that it brings, however, many do not know the best exercises for them as an individual. Over the last several years, there has been terrific research into the benefits of exercise for People with Parkinson’s. The great thing about the new research is that it shows that ‘Exercise is Medicine’ and the right style and types of exercise, given at the right time throughout the disease, can have a profound impact on the independence and confidence of the person living with the disease. One of the main questions I get asked as a Neuro-Physiotherapist is ‘when is the right time to start exercising?’. The answer to that is very easy – it’s right now! The
longer you leave it the harder it can be to get moving and make the positive changes you need to make to live a better, healthier and more independent life with Parkinson’s. ‘So what are the right exercises for me?’, I’m so glad you asked as this is a great question. I think you will understand that this is a difficult question to answer in an article, because it depends on your symptoms and abilities. The main philosophy I teach people with PD is to ‘THINK BIG’. An analogy that was told to me by someone with PD is that ‘it’s like driving a car with the handbrake on’ so you really have to up the revs way more than you think to even get moving in the first place. Remember, if you would like the right advice for you as an individual you should be assessed by a neuro-physiotherapist.

were sold inappropriately to individuals who did not require it nor would they have ever been eligible to even make a claim under it. As a result, you have the right to reclaim the payments made towards a missold policy.
It is therefore in your own best interests to take action now without further delay. Essentially PPI is an insurance policy sold to protect consumers should they find themselves unable to maintain repayments due to sudden unemployment, illness or other unforeseeable circumstances. Forty five million of these policies were sold in the Uk over a twenty year period and a vast number of these
It is free to make a claim and you can even do it yourself. A good place to start would be for you to check old loan or mortgage statements. It may be worthwhile noting that a claim can be made on behalf of the deceased and any subsequent award would then form part of their estate. Please remember the deadline date because once it has gone no claims will be accepted and you may miss out unnecessarily.

HELP ON HAND FOR MONEY WORRIES
Focus on Eyes WHAT IS CATARACT? Cataract is the most common cause of decreased vision in people over the age of 50. If you are over 65 years old, there is a 30% chance that you will develop a visually impairing cataract. It is responsible for half of all cases of blindness in the world. Cataract is a clouding of the natural lens of the eye. It develops slowly and can occur in one or both eyes. Cataract may cause you to have blurred vision which is not correctible with glasses, see faded colours, get glare from bright lights or have difficulty with night time vision. Sometimes a frequent change in glasses, or double vision that does not disappear on covering either eye, may be a sign of cataract.
It most commonly results from aging changes in the lens of the eye although environmental factors including ultraviolet radiation are also thought to contribute. Less commonly, cataract may be present since birth or be caused by injury or previous eye surgery. If you suspect that you have cataract, contact your local optician who may be able to give you a full assessment. There are very well qualified opticians in the Southside who will then refer you to an ophthalmologist (Eye Consultant) to confirm the findings and discuss the options of treatment.

A series of weekly drop-in sessions are available for people who are facing worries about their finances as we head into 2019. East Renfrewshire Council's Money Advice and Rights Team (MART) is holding the sessions until March 27 at the Eastwood Health Centre in Clarkston, as well as in Barrhead Health Centre. There are many factors that can affect financial wellbeing, including the New year period when many people find themselves in debt after spending over their budget at Christmas. At any time of the year, people can be hit by unexpected expenses or they might be facing a job loss or illness. Specialist staff are on hand at the MART sessions to provide
support and offer advice and assistance with benefits, debts and budgeting. The sessions run from 9.30am until 12.30pm on Wednesdays at Eastwood Health Centre. They are available on Mondays at Barrhead. Local people can also pick up information packs about council services, as well as free giveaways with tips on how to improve their financial wellbeing. To find out more or chat to a member of MART call 0141 577 8420 or email mart@ eastrenfrewshire.gov.uk.

Jane B, 82, Lanarkshire After losing her husband, Jane wanted to make some changes to her Power of Attorney, something she already had in place. Unaware she could have two people named as her Power of Attorney, the 82-year-old was advised by ILAWS that she could,
and so appointed her two nieces to take on her financial and medical decisions should she become too ill to do so. Mrs B, who does not keep too well, wanted her Power of Attorney drawn up fast – but her previous solicitor took more than
three months to arrange it. So she contacted ILAWS, and is grateful that she did, because just a month later everything was in place. Mrs B, from Lanarkshire, said: “I wanted it changed quickly because I am in poor health, I am a widow and I have no family of my own. Within two days of contacting ILAWS by phone, they were out at the house. I told them what I wanted, and the personal attention I got over the phone and

From start to finish Richard, Martin and team were fantastic. I remember on the first day of one of several meetings saying to Martin how refreshing their approach to the sale was and that was what sealed our business. They are honest and professional. The fit was completed in the three days as promised and the team were superb. Absolutely delighted with the outcome. There were minor teething problems but the speed at which my calls were dealt with and the team got things sorted was first class service. Would highly recommend.

Adam, who lives in Eaglesham and is a member of Giffnock Parish Church, has been recognised for his work in raising awareness of the neurological condition of stammering, also called stuttering. He said: “I'm delighted and honoured that my work has been recognised and that my message is getting out there. I say, ‘Embrace your quirks as they make you who you are.’ ” Earlier in Adam’s life, he was quite a different person. Due to his stammer, he could neither communicate as he wished, nor did he believe that could he be the person he wished to be. He made up a different name for himself that he was able to pronounce more easily and never spoke out in company. Finding a therapy method for people who stutter, the
McGuire Method, which teaches a breathing technique and emphasis on certain sounds and words was his means to learning to control his disability and to “embrace the quirks”. Adam said: “I'm not cured and I have to work hard to keep controlled, eloquent speech. But I've certainly overcome all the negative connotations around my stammering. The McGuire Method changed my life and totally changed my perspective of the world.” With a dream of helping children with additional needs, Adam
qualified as a teacher in 2011 and is now able to encourage young people to overcome their difficulties and to accept who they are. He teaches in a state school for special needs in Glasgow. Adam’s story was highlighted by The Social on BBC. He has spoken out for International Stammering Awareness Day and in 2017 he was also presented with a British Citizen Award at the Palace of Westminster, in recognition of his work to reduce the stigma attached with the disability.
