BREEA’S MONSTER BOOK TALE
Author Breea Keenan and illustrator David Nichol with Nessie's Selfie
David and Breea at the official launch at St Joseph's Primary School in Busby
A children’s book penned by a Busby writer has been a fast seller, with a Scottish actress even snapping up a copy. Breea Keenan has teamed up with illustrator David Nichol on the new book about the Loch Ness Monster. Nessie’s Selfie sold more than 300 copies in only the first few weeks of availability and has been delivered all over the world. The brightly coloured picture book for children aged up to about seven also became a bestseller on e-commerce website Etsy within a week. It has enjoyed rave reviews and caught the attention of Elaine C Smith, who bought a copy for her grand-daughter, too.
Breea and David officially launched the book with a reading event for the infant department of St Joseph’s Primary School in Busby. Breea, 35, who also writes for this Community Magazine, said: “We’re thrilled that people are enjoying Nessie’s Selfie and the reaction we’ve had since releasing the book has been amazing.” The book tells the story of the Loch Ness Monster with a modern twist. There is also a dedicated Time to Talk section for parents to read with their children.
Transform your Conservatory into an ALL YEAR round Sunroom
Breea, a mother, said: “I wanted to write a story to stimulate discussion around feelings and friendship, which could help younger children deal with the big feelings they can have.” A chance conversation with a work colleague led Breea to find an illustrator for the story she had written. David, 37, of Carmunnock, Glasgow, studied animation at university. He said: “As soon as I read the story, I wanted to get sketching. Everyone loves Nessie and she’s such an iconic Scottish character.” The pair worked together on the concept for months, sketching
and agreeing ideas. Breea added: “Nessie’s Selfie is, first and foremost, a story about friendship and the two main characters each have something to overcome. “I love the idea of stories encouraging children to open up more and helping to develop their confidence. It’s been really rewarding seeing it all come together.” The pair are now looking for more stockists for the book that has also sold through events and Facebook connections. They are also touring schools and nurseries with the tale. To buy the book see Etsy: https:// etsy.me/2s4IrGK.

Walk-ER is looking for new walking leaders to assist with regular health walks
A Health Walk is usually less than an hour long and completed at a brisk pace. It includes a short warm up at the start and followed by a cool down.
A campaign initiative that aims to improve people’s health and fitness is keen to enlist the help of new walking leaders. Walk-ER is recruiting across East Renfrewshire and would like to hear from volunteers who can assist with regular Health Walks.
All volunteers are given Walk Leader training to teach them the skills and confidence to lead walks within their community.
The walks are an opportunity to meet new people and explore places that people might not have been before.
Walk leaders are an integral part to the free Health Walks, from offering a friendly welcome at the start of the walk, to keeping walkers safe and happy during the walk.
The leaders also benefit from Heart Start Training, Basic First Aid Training, Strength and Balance Training, Body Boosting Bingo, Dementia Walk Leader Training and Refresher Walk Leader Training.

Claire Murray picked up the Inspirational Leader award last year
More than 100 names have been put forward by local people as nominations closed for an annual East Renfrewshire community awards. The second I Love Clarkston awards winners will be announced later this month and organisers have been impressed by the quality of nominations. A spokeswoman from I Love Clarkston BID, which is organising the event, said: “The nominators have taken time to give us detailed information and explanations about why
they have submitted a person, business, organisation or group for consideration. “We believe this is thanks to the success of last year's event and it also demonstrates what we have always known, that Clarkston is full of wonderful businesses, groups and people that strive to give the best back to their community.”

ACTION-PACKED FUN AT SHOW
An annual outdoor pursuits show is encouraging visitors from across Scotland to be on their marks to get set for a host of fun activities. This year, the popular Scottish Cycling, Running and Outdoor Pursuits Show (SCROPS) takes place at the SEC in Glasgow over the weekend of Saturday February 29 and Sunday March 1 and promises even more interactive challenges and sports competitions. Some of the more popular activities are back, including the busy Triathlon Challenge, indoor running, cycling and mountain bike tracks, as well as the Kids’ Active and Bike Zones.
New for the fourth SCROPS is an innovative Adidas Rotating Climbing Wall, which is suitable for all abilities and aims to increase coordination, balance and endurance. Families are also sure to enjoy the CalMac Stand Up Paddleboard activity and a Jet 2 Watt Bike Challenge Competition. As well as all the action, visitors can pop along to the Show Theatre, where a range of industry leading professionals and athletes will be talking
about their specialist sports and providing valuable tips and insights on how to perform at your best. A packed hall of stalls offers the opportunity to shop and engage with some of the biggest brands in physical pursuits and outdoor sports. Julia Girvan, from show organiser PSP Media Group, is anticipating another great event. She said: “The SCROPS show in 2019 was our best to date and the 2020 show
promises to be even bigger and better with the addition of some exciting new activities and great brands from the world of sport and outdoor pursuits. “There will be some great prizes up for grabs, too, so everyone is encouraged to come ready to participate and, in some cases, compete to win. The show offers a great day out for all ages and it is well worth making the journey to Glasgow for.” To buy tickets and for further information see www.scropos. co.uk.

Level Four is held for those who are mobile and have minimal difficulty doing daily activities. All levels are available at Clarkston Halls and class days and times vary.
“We were pleased to help so many people last year. We hope to encourage even more participants to come along this year, too.”

A fundraising group in East Renfrewshire is celebrating three decades of raising money for a cancer charity. The Eaglesham 1990 Committee was founded in 1990 to generate funds for Macmillan Cancer Support and since then the volunteers have raised more than £300,000!. The committee raises an average of £8,000 each year, but last year they generated £13,476. This amount will go towards financial grants that will be handed out across East Renfrewshire. Macmillan recognises that with a cancer diagnosis comes financial worries, which is why it is there to support everyone physically, emotionally and financially. Julia Perrie, fundraising manager at Macmillan Cancer Support,
said that the Eaglesham 1990 Committee are a “dedicated, hardworking group of volunteers who deserve some recognition. She added: “Working with this committee has been a real highlight of my role as Fundraising Manager at Macmillan Cancer Support. It is great to see a group of like-minded friends use their incredible energy and enthusiasm as a drive towards supporting those living with cancer, and having lots of fun whilst they do it. “We are so grateful to have Sally, Kirsty, Anne, Caroline, Fiona, Jennifer and Ross as volunteers and we all look forward to seeing what 2020 brings.

CALL TO CHEER ON RIDERS
The Rouken Glen Cyclocross takes place in February
Local adults and children are being encouraged to turn out to support a cyclocross event at Rouken Glen Park this month. The Rouken Glen Cyclocross (RGCX) takes place on Sunday February 16 and event organisers are keen to see a full field of riders, as well as lots of cow bell ringing action and cheering from spectators. It is the sixth edition of the RGCX and the race is the final one in the Super Quaich Series. Most riders will have already
entered but there may still be spaces available if you enter before 11.55pm on February 2. Cyclocross races typically take place in the autumn and winter and comprise laps of a short course featuring a range of terrain. At Rouken Glen, the course is a mix of grass, gravel, mud, roots and hills. In addition, riders are required
to quickly dismount and carry their bikes over an obstruction or obstacle. The RGCX is organised by local Glasgow cycling team SR Albannach. A spokesperson said: “Cyclocross races live on energy and spectacle, so we would encourage the community to come along on the day and ring a cowbell or bang a drum. In fact, get the whole family involved and bring anything to make as much noise as possible.
“This natural parkland amphitheatre at Rouken Glen means spectators can take advantage of panoramic viewing and savour a carnival atmosphere. In the race finish arena there will be live commentary all afternoon and tunes.” The B-race will kick off at 11am, while the A-Race starts at at 1pm. The event is free to attend as a spectator. There will be onsite catering and toilets a short walking distance from the main arena. See www.albannach.cc/rgcx.

EVELYN’S AWARD DELIGHT Council to deliver the renovations and organise a celebration for the park's opening. She added: “I would like to thank my family, friends and the local community who have supported me over the years, as well as everyone who attends Busby Memory Lane each week. “Working in my local area brings me great enjoyment and I look forward to continuing this over the coming years."
Evelyn Baxter receiving her 2019 Provost Award from Provost Jim Fletcher
A Busby resident has revealed her surprise at winning the 2019 Provost Award for her community voluntary work. Evelyn Baxter was honoured for the role she plays in Busby Memory Lane, an initiative that launched more than three years ago to give more opportunities to the older people of Busby. The Provost Award crowns the area’s Citizen of the Year and recognises dedicated volunteers for their invaluable work in the community and the difference this makes to the lives of many others. Evelyn said: “It came as a huge surprise to have been nominated
for, never mind awarded with, the prestigious 2019 Provost Award.” With the support of a committee of volunteers, Evelyn plans and delivers weekly sessions in Duff Hall to more than 30 older people to help ensure they remain engaged in the community. Evelyn was also instrumental in bidding for funding for Spider Park - a play area in Busby with swings, climbing frames and slides - by working with other members of Busby Community
Evelyn was presented with her award at a special ceremony at East Renfrewshire Council’s Eastwood HQ. Provost Jim Fletcher said: "I was delighted to present the 2019 award to Evelyn and hear about her hard work volunteering in the local area. “A great number of nominations were received this year, however, after the judging panel heard of Evelyn's tireless work to support the community of Busby we were all in agreement that she should be recognised for her dedication to improve her local area, ensuring it is accessible to all. Congratulations Evelyn and thank you for your continuous efforts."

February 2020 | What's Up Doc?
CALL OUT FROM COMMUNITY COUNCIL What's Up Doc? with Dr Nick Dunn
WHERE’S This month: DONALD, YOUR TROOSERS…?
A newly elected community council in Clarkston is looking forward to hearing from local people. After being disbanded years ago, Clarkston Community Council recently reformed and has a committee of 12 people as well as chairperson, Rebecca Nicholson. Now the council is issuing a questionnaire to residents to find out about any issues and ideas they might have. Rebecca said: “We want to hear from people to find out what is on their mind and to see what can be done to improve our community. “Ideas can be big or small but we want to hear from as wide a cross section of people as possible.”
The questionnaire will be available on-line and also through door-to-door visits. The Clarkston Community Council is one of 11 established in East Renfrewshire. The councils comprise local people who give of their time and have a genuine interest in the wellbeing of their community and the people who live there. The community councils provide a direct link between local residents and public bodies, such as the NHS, police and regional council. To find out more see Clarkston Community Council on Facebook and email: clarkstoncommunitycouncil@ gmail.com.
Doctors prescribing bed-rest for various ailments is very much a thing of the past. More rapid diagnosis and treatment, day surgery, and increased awareness of the dangers of immobility have very much put that idea to bed! Despite this, we know that hospital patients spend excessive time in, or by, their bed, especially in longer stay medical wards. This is not planned and may be related to staffing pressures, but there is thought to be another factor – pyjama paralysis. We had our bathroom fitted recently and love it! Had looked at a few bathroom shops and wasn't too keen on buying the products and arranging our own fitter but these guys do everything as a package. When we visited the store the only problem was narrowing it down as I saw loads that I liked. The price was quoted in store (with no pressure) and when Richard came out to measure up and ensure everything would fit there was no change to the price. The guys were in and out in 3 days and the work was perfect. On third day I came home from work to find the finished bathroom and not even a speck of dust left behind. Would 100% recommend. Also the price was really competitive. Definitely with a look!

Valentine's Feature | February 2020
Look at small gestures
enjoy them all day and you want colleagues to be green with envy.
They don’t go unnoticed! Offer to help out with the chores; open doors; listen intently when spoken to; pay compliments; take care of a pressing matter that has needed some attention; fix or replace something broken; serve breakfast in bed; take the dog to the groomer; give a massage; or draw a bath. out and do some activities together! Find something cultural that’s going on around you and go for it!
Write a love letter or a poem or even a song! Tell that special someone what they really mean
to you. Put it in your own handwriting rather than typing it out and put some real thought into it. Everyone likes to hear how special they really are. Something written down can be cherished for many years to come.
Start the day special and end the day special!
Shower them with flowers How important is it to send flowers? Don’t discount the power of flowers. Numerous scientific studies have documented the positive emotional effect of flowers! Send flowers to the workplace as you want the recipient to
Make this Valentine’s Day one you’ll both cherish and remember from when you wake up in the morning until your head hits the pillow that night. You’re both worth it!
Spend quality time together Quality time together is the most important gift you can give one another on this very special day, or any other day for that matter!

The Sex Life of Bandages is a big screen tribute to the iconic Scottish comedian and revisits his final stand-up tour. Prior to retiring in 2016 following his diagnosis with Parkinson's Disease, Billy toured worldwide continuously for 50 years. He performed to an audience of more than 10 million. The Sex Life of Bandages was recorded in 2015 during his Australian leg and on February 8 at 7pm there will be screening of his show at Eastwood Park Theatre in Giffnock. Tickets cost £13 for £11 for students. See eastwoodparktheatre.co.uk or call 0141 577 4956.
Legal Matters with Gill Bowman BA LLB
LEGO THERAPY IN COMMUNITY
This month: PET AGREEMENTS Apologies to those not so keen on animals. However, for pet owners the following discussion may be a point of interest. There has been a notable increase in the number of disputes for couples following separation that involve the rightful ownership or ‘custody’ of a pet, particularly dogs. The wellpublicised dispute of Ant McPartlin and Lisa Armstrong should be a cautionary tale to all. On some occasions the dispute between former couples escalates to court proceedings; which can be financially, as well as emotionally, draining. In the event you and your partner have a pet, or are
considering bringing one onto your family, it may be worthwhile considering entering into an agreement that would regulate what would happen to them if you were to separate. This would be similar to a pre/ post nuptial or cohabitation agreement and could prevent possible conflict in the future. The agreement could regulate whether the animal would be considered to belong to one party, shared care or even who is to be responsible for costs associated with their keep. If these matters are agreed at the time the animal is adopted or purchased then it may prevent unnecessary conflict down the line.
A therapy group that utilises the popular children’s toy Lego will meet weekly this month in Clarkston. The LEGO Therapy Construction Club is for children with social communication difficulties. It is run by local paediatric occupational therapist Tina MacArthur at Williamwood Parish Church every Thursday from 3.30pm to 4.30pm. The club helps children to develop social skills, such as listening, sharing, taking turns, working towards a shared goal and problem solving. Tina also offers individual sessions to help children to get ready to join a a therapy club. The cost is £17.50 each week. Call 07856 759427 or see www. facebook.com/tinamacarthurKIDSOT.

and react with the correct solution. The classes at SKMS are from age five upwards and for all abilities so everyone is welcome to try.” Kids’ Krav Maga classes are divided into classes for children aged five to 10 and 10 to 16. They are designed to teach youngsters the mental and physical self-defence they need while growing up. As well as adult classes, there are sessions for women only. These cover a range of subjects including awareness, avoidance, preventions, de-escalation and, ultimately, the correct physical responses should they be required.
Krav Maga, an innovative self-defence system has new classes in Newton Mearns
An innovative self-defence system has arrived on the south side of Glasgow with sessions for adults and children. Scottish Krav Maga Systems has launched classes in Newton Mearns and hopes to encourage new people to learn how to take care of themselves. Krav Maga is a self-defence system that incorporates a wide combination of techniques, from Western boxing and wrestling to Eastern martial arts.
For a gift that keeps on giving, fill a jar with ice lolly sticks personalized with fun and easy things you can do with your partner all year long.
One of the instructors, Robert Bennett, explains: “Krav Maga is not a sport but rather it is a system that teaches people to be self aware and able to deal with unwelcome situations, whatever they might be. “The teaching method uses reallife situations to demonstrate a threat, recognise the problem
fun
SKMS can offer customised sessions and courses, such as “adaptive” self defence class for the disabled, workshops for businesses and series of sessions for school and colleges.
STIRRING UP SOME LOVE In Wales, wooden love spoons were carved and given as gifts on Valentine’s Day. Hearts, keys and keyholes were favorite Valentine decorations on the wooden spoons. These symbols meant the heart would be unlocked for love.
Currently, weekly SKMS Krav Maga beginners’ classes for adults and juniors take place at Parklands Hotel & Country Club on Ayr Road on Saturdays. See www.scotkravmaga.co.uk/ classes/krav-maga-newtonmearns.

TOP TIPS FROM MR NETWORKING Senior Savvy Scotland’s “Mr with Tasnim Rehman
Networking” is coming to East Renfrewshire to pass on his top tips for working the room.
This month: HOMECARE AND MY SANITY Spending time caring for my 84-year-old dad with dementia reminded me how emotionally difficult it can be
Colin McKeand’s (pictured) masterclass is aimed at business people who are nervous about networking and do not know how or where to do it. The event is being held at the Redhurst Hotel in Giffnock on February 13. The trainer, who left the corporate sector in 1996 after a successful career in finance, has used face-to-face networking for 22 years to run several businesses. Colin revealed what participants can expect at the masterclass. He said: “People are terrified of networking but one of the biggest mistakes is misunderstanding what networking is. “It’s a whole process. It is not simply going to a networking event and chucking a few business cards down, nor is it to sell to people. Networking is about building relationships.”
The most difficult thing about attending a networking event is walking into a crowded room. Colin added: “The first thing you need to do is be brave. Contact the organiser beforehand, go early and then speak to them first. Attend a few to build up your confidence.” To book your place at the workshop, which is organised by East Renfrewshire Chamber of Commerce, visit www. eastrenchamber.org.uk/tcevents. Tickets are £10 for members and £15 for non-members and include a hot buffet.
Helpful points to remember: • Accepting things have changed – Prepare to work from a whole new script. Old roles, methodologies, emotions may have changed more than you think. • Don’t rush it – you are both on uncharted territory, follow the changes. • Expecting nothing emotionally – whilst some parents may open emotionally, some may not. As bonds change some parents may ‘cling’ on to their own ways. • Expecting their anger – one thing a parent has with their child is authority, this may be lost during this transition and not easy for them to give up and may lash out one way or another. • Give them their autonomy – as much as you can, offer options instead of orders. • Ask their advice – a great way to show them respect, love and true value. • Love your healthcare providers – build good positive relations with those who care, nurses, doctors, CAREgivers. • Prepare for sibling insanity – sadly, some people go bonkers when parents get ill. Money, childhood mementos, furniture, possessions, family home, the will……..etc. Prepare for the coming crazy with dignity.

SCOTTISH GOVERNMENT’S FIRST HOME FUND
of a purchase price to which the Scheme applies. A “first time buyer” is someone who does not own nor has previously owned a property anywhere in the world. As it is a shared equity scheme, the purchaser will own the house outright and the Government will not own any part of the property.
A new assisted purchase scheme to help first time buyers has been launched by the Scottish Government. It is called the First Home Fund and is designed to help first time buyers get on to the property ladder. It is a shared equity scheme and provides up to £25,000 towards the purchase price of new builds or existing homes. Available to first time buyers only, it runs up to March 2021 alongside other shared equity schemes. It does not replace the current Help To Buy Scheme which will run until March 2021. The Government’s contribution is secured on the equity of the house
and repaid to the Government when the house is sold, or earlier if desired. Buyers wishing to use the Scheme must also take out a mortgage for at least 25% of the property value and fund at least 5% of the purchase price themselves. There is no monthly repayment, only one of joint applicants need be a first time buyer and the £550 administration fee will be refunded if the application is unsuccessful. Further, there is no means testing of applicants nor any upper limit
Dallas McMillan has extensive experience of Help To Buy cases for new builds and are well placed to advise on and deal with First Home Fund purchases in our usual quick and efficient manner.
After the award is granted there is a three month time limit within which to conclude missives and a further six months after that is allowed to actually complete the purchase transaction. The Scheme can be used along with Help To Buy ISAS or Lifetime ISAS but cannot be combined with any other shared equity scheme for the same purchase. If one of joint buyers already owns a house, this must be sold before the award is made. The Scheme is not available for Buy To Let properties and there is a general prohibition against letting, lodgers, sharing occupation etc. The grant does not require repaid if the property is later remortgaged.

with a class looking at 18th and 19th century historical sources, including maps, documents and photographs.” Local studies librarian for East Renfrewshire Culture and Leisure Amanda Robb believes that Susan’s research is inspiring. She said: “What Susan has done is unique and her talks are always so incredibly interesting.
Susan Hunter, who is the author of a book entitled Eaglesham: The Farmlands and the Orry, will start with a session on Monday February 24, followed by another on Monday March 2.
“She has such a wealth of knowledge about the area and she will show people how she uncovered facts and information.”
She and her husband Robin have spent two decades surveying the farmlands of the area and uncovering historical facts. The couple have visited and recorded 56 farms across East Renfrewshire, with the assistance of local farming families.
Both classes run from 1.30pm to 3.30pm at Montgomerie Hall in Eaglesham. The walking session will last up to two hours, depending on the speed of the group, and may involve some uphills and muddy or grassy footpaths so participants should be fit and able to take part.
Susan said: “I am delighted to be leading the history sessions on Eaglesham. The first session will be a walk to explore the built heritage of Eaglesham past and present. I will follow this up

JOY AS GERRY WEBER STAYS OPEN A womenʼs fashion store in Newton Mearns that was facing closure has been saved for loyal customers by the determined manager. Laura Dunlop has worked with drive and passion to keep the Gerry Weber shop in The Avenue open after a major restructuring of the international business in Germany. All standalone stores and concessions in the retail UK group were ear-marked for closure as part of a stream-lining process late last year. Now Laura has successfully taken over the store as an independent collaboration with Gerry Weber. She said “When the closure was announced it sent shockwaves through all of us, as a team facing redundancy, as our very loyal customers from near and far losing their favourite brand and also a loss to The Avenue. I didn’t want this to happen, so with support from Gerry Weber and New River, the owners of The Avenue, we worked towards the perfect solution for all and at the very last moment the store was saved.“
It was in 2014 that The Avenue secured the first Gerry Weber Scottish store and under Laura’s management it quickly became the jewel in the crown. Ladies come to the shop from places as far afield as Ayrshire and Perthshire, as well as locally. As the shop manager and area manager, Laura became well known for choosing great clothing lines and designs and also looking after customers. She says: “Our success is down to the personal shopping experience we provide. We personally style our customers and offer what we feel is an amazing shopping experience. “Customer feedback is also key and I listen to needs and adapt the collections to suit, especially core pieces like trousers, jeans and coats. “Most importantly, the ladies trust us to keep them looking amazing and they return delighted for their next piece.

“We will continue to offer the same great service but as an independent store.” The collections include casual, classic and occasion pieces, as well as capsule collections. The focus is on comfort, timeless style and versatility, as well as the much favoured elastic comfort waist trousers. Sizes range from (European) 34 to 48.
Laura said she is excited to see the arrival of the spring summer collections with soft palette colours, plus leather jackets to complement. The sale is continuing with up to 60% off many items, up to £100 off selected coats and knitwear from £30, tops from £25 and trousers from £49.
