FOCUS ON HEATHER’S PHOTOS A Mearns Castle High School pupil is delighted to have three of her photographs chosen for an exhibition at the Scottish Parliament. Heather Osborne (pictured), 17, was approached by the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA), in association with the Scottish Society for the History of Photography, for her permission to exhibit the images from her Higher Photography course. The photos are now on display as part of an exhibition called Higher Vision at the Scottish Parliament. The exhibition showcases some of the best images taken by 26 students from schools and colleges across Scotland who have completed the SQA Higher Photography course over the past year.

thrilled that three of my 12 photos have been chosen for the exhibition. “Photography has always been a hobby – I saved up and bought my own camera at the age of 13 – and I hope to continue to enjoy taking photos throughout my life.”

The exhibition is on display in the Parliament’s Main Hall until February 8 and entry is free.

The Higher Vision exhibition provides a unique insight into what life in Scotland is like through the lenses of students and captures people and places from their own outlook.

Heather, who is now in sixth year at school, said: “I am

to portraiture of people who have made an impact on their lives. These images also explore issues of identity, adolescence and mental health. The Presiding Officer, the Rt. Hon. Ken Macintosh MSP, said: “This is a really impressive exhibition that provides a fascinating insight into life in Scotland. “More than two dozen of our best photography students have given us some beautiful, striking

and intriguing images to consider and I am delighted that the Scottish Parliament can provide a platform to display their obvious talent. “The themes covered range from the intimate to the abstract, with intensely personal photographs alongside reflections on the natural environment. I would encourage anyone with an interest to come and see this thought-provoking collection.”

McNEISH THANKS LIBRARIES Book Bash celebrations, where youngsters were encouraged to attend dressed as their favourite characters for a funfilled afternoon of party games, arts and crafts and, of course, books. The libraries also hosted a series of arts and crafts sessions for children to enjoy, including sketching scenes from their favourite books, robot modelling and Origami.

An award-winning writer and TV presenter gave praise for libraries during a Book Week Scotland celebration in East Renfrewshire. Cameron McNeish (pictured) was giving a talk to a full house at Giffnock Library and offered an insight into his childhood, climbing Munros and his successful career. The Govan-born author, who was presenting his latest book, an autobiography, There’s Always the Hills, said: “I’m in a very fortunate position to earn a living by exploring and mountain climbing. It’s been a dream of mine from such an early age that I’ve followed and it’s been very good to me.

“Libraries have always been very important to me and books first inspired me to climb Scottish mountains. The library is such a rich resource and in this time of digital world, there’s something very reassuring about holding a book in your hand.” Book Week Scotland also featured kids’ craft and Primary 1 book bag gifting sessions and the week culminated in Big

A number of Meet the Author events included multi-award-winning Scottish songwriter and musician Karine Polwart (pictured), who visited Barrhead Foundry and Mearns Libraries to read her first children’s book, A Wee Bird Was Watching, to children. Author Paul Murdoch visited Giffnock Library to give a talk to local school pupils. Book Week Scotland is an annual event organised by the Scottish Book Trust. SIGN UP FOR JUNIOR DUKE A southside teacher and mum is hoping to roll out an innovative children’s challenge programme to local schools and groups. Dawn Waugh launched her Junior Duke for youngsters in Primary 4 to Primary 7 in 2007 and Mini Duke for children aged P2 and P3 in 2011. The concept sees children completing seven of 10 challenges each academic year across a variety of themes, including cooking, craft, domestic and outdoors. As they become older, the challenges become more complex. Mini Duke is the build up programme to Junior Duke.

Task outcomes are monitored by trained adults and the children are awarded a badge and certificate on completion. Started in the school where Dawn teaches, Hutchesons’ Grammar, it has now been adopted by nine more schools and it’s hoped that other primaries and groups will be keen to be part of the challenge programme.

WINDOWS BOARDED BY BUSBY GLASS • WINDOWS BOARDED BY BUSBY GLASS • WINDOWS BOARDED BY BUSBY GLASS

Dawn said: “It all came about because I was thinking of ways to give children of all abilities a challenge to work towards. I liked the idea of the Duke of Edinburgh scheme for older children and also the badges system at the Brownies, Cubs, Guides and Scouts. “The challenges are meant to promote a child’s life skills, independence, responsibility and confidence, such as learning how to repair a punctured bike tyre, making meals, cooking cakes, sewing

on buttons, climbing a hill and creating a first aid kit. “The challenges progress each year and we have found that children really enjoy working towards their annual awards. Many do go on to enrol with Duke of Edinburgh. “It would be great to see more schools and children’s groups embracing the Mini and Junior Dukes programmes and I hope people will get in touch with me to find out more.” See juniorduke.com.

I LOVE CLARKSTON AWARDS Nominations have opened for the inaugural I Love Clarkston Community Awards 2019 to recognise community members, groups and businesses. The awards are organised by I Love Clarkston Business Improvement District, with the public voting in seven categories, including I Love Clarkston Community Champion Award 2019, Young Person of the Year, Inspirational Leader, Group of the Year, Customer Service Star, Independent Business of the Year and National Business of the Year. Another category, the I Love Clarkston Award, will be awarded by the committee. The awards ceremony will take place on March 1, 2019 at the Redhurst Hotel.

MEARNS WIN BENNIE CUP K. Rea; W. Laurie; M. Solomon and D. McCallum were presented with the Bennie Cup by SBF president J. Lassa. They also won £200 towards club funds. The win was described as “exhilarating”, as the club build ups to its centenary year celebrations in 2020.

The Bennie Cup winning team from Mearns Bowling Club

For the first time in 98 years, Mearns Bowling Club has won the Bennie Cup, beating 64 teams competing from all over Scotland. The Bennie Cup is an annual competition run throughout Scotland by the Scottish Bowler’s Fellowship (SBF), an association set up in 1954 and open to all bowlers in Scotland through an annual fee. The Fellowship has charitable aims, investing the money and then using it in helpful ways, such as assisting bowlers who may have fallen on hard times. The fund recently helped in the purchase of 25 Bradshaw Bowls Buggies to outdoor clubs, to facilitate participation by impaired members.

In order to play for the Bennie Cup you must be a member of the SBF and wear your Fellowship badge, as failure to do so results in a forfeit of valuable points for your team. Two rinks, with two teams of four players, compete both at home and away. Mearns played against Busby. It was a close game with Mearns winning by just one extra end.

Mearns Bowling Club is open to all. Les Shields, club treasurer, said: “Mearns is a friendly bowling club with very sociable members. It invites everyone who is interested to find out more. The only requirements are that you pay your annual club fee and that you enjoy your membership, giving the game of bowling a shot.” For further information emai: mearnsbcsecy@yahoo.co.uk or see www.mearnsbc.clubbuzz.co.uk

The Mearns team: W. Wright; D. McKean; L. Shields; J. McGaffney;

THE YEAR THEY CANCELLED JANUARY

An evening walking group in Clarkston is keen to encourage both adults and children to join in the weekly strolls in 2019.

Prior to 1752 Britian celebrated New Year on 25th March (Annunciation Day). The year 1752 only lasted nine months, as the dates from 1st January to 24th March and from 3rd-13th September were skipped in order for 1753 to begin on 1st January like in other countries.

Walk the Block East Ren offers free walks of around an hour each Wednesday at 7pm. The walks start from Clarkston Hall car park and are guided by Gary Mckay, who is a qualified Paths for All walks leader.

are already daytime walking groups in our local area. “The evening can be the most convenient time for many people and it suits those that work full-time. “Everyone is welcome to join us from senior citizens to children, although youngsters should be accompanied by an adult. The walks follow a variety of different routes each week and they are done at chatting pace. Gary added: “Having a group walk each week motivates people to get out and in all types of weather. The benefits of walking include improvements to both mental and physical well-being. It is also great for people to meet others and to make new friends. You can join the Walk the Block walk on 9th January and every Wednesday after that.

He started the walks almost two years ago because he wanted to do something helpful locally and to get more people to enjoy fitness.

The group will also hold their first social evening in Clarkston at the end of this month. Details of the venue are to be confirmed.

He said: “I chose the evenings for these walks because there

PLAYERS BACK AT THE PARK Giffnock Theatre Players return to the familiar surroundings of Eastwood Park Theatre for their latest exciting production. The sophisticated and suspenseful play, Dial M For Murder, has been rewritten from the famous Hitchcock movie starring Grace Kelly and Ray Milland. GTP member David Pearson said: “Whether you are already familiar with the story, after seeing the movie, or not, the play is so cleverly written, with twists, turns and tension building up right until the end, that everyone will enjoy this absorbing piece of theatre.” The group have performed Dial M For Murder before – “30 years ago, to be exact,” added David – and it was a great success then.

The Players are hoping it will be as popular with audiences this time around. David said: “The play has a cast of five, featuring some familiar faces and some new ones as well. This new production will, I am sure, be equally powerful and popular. Audiences can expect a great night's entertainment.”

Tickets are £15 and £13 (plus booking fee) and can be purchased from the theatre’s box office in person, online at www. eastwoodparktheatre.co.uk boxoffice or by phoning 07518 201756. In April, the group will be performing The Diary of Anne Frank.

FLOWER CLUB FIRE SAFETY CHECKS MEET UPS FOR OVER-60S Local senior citizens are being urged to take up the offer of free Home Fire Safety Visits this winter. Busby Flower Club is hosting a members’ night this month, followed by a “Mysterious Inspiration” presentation by Enid Reid in February. The club meets at the Redhurst Hotel in Giffnock on the fourth Tuesday of the month. Members enjoy a range of activities, including presentations by professional flower arrangers and hands-on workshops. Busby Flower Club was formed in 1960 and currently has just more than 100 members. The January meeting is on the 22nd, while the February meeting is the 26th. The events start at 7.30pm.

New statistics released by The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) show that more than half of accidental house fire fatalities involved people over the age of 60.

“Limited sight or hearing can mean an individual is less likely to be aware of fire when it breaks out. “We want to make sure that every older person is offered support to reduce the risk of fire in the home.”

Some 61 per cent of all the home fire fatalities in the last five years involved people over 60, while more than a third of accidental dwelling fire casualties (34 per cent) were also people in this age group. A SFRS spokesperson said: “There are many reasons why older people could be affected by fire.

NEW NURSERY FOR BUSBY PS What's Up Doc? with Dr Nick Dunn

This month: HERE’S TO YOUR HEALTH…

Busby Primary School is set to be part of a £23 million nursery investment plan. East Renfrewshire Council has announced plans to build a new nursery within the grounds of Busby Primary to replace the temporary facility that is currently in place. The nursery will have the capacity for 120 children and will include innovative developments, such as a new multi-use games area. In addition, the council has plans for new landscaped play areas for pupils. The Busby nursery revamp is part of wider plans to build five new nurseries in East Renfrewshire. All the nurseries will operate as family centres that will offer 50 weeks of childcare a year with the nurseries to open by August 2020.

Councillor Paul O’Kane, Convener for Education and Equalities, said: “It is exciting to have reached this milestone in our ambitious early years’ expansion plan. “The sites of the proposed new family centres were carefully chosen as we aim to provide green and natural environments for our children so they have the best opportunities for quality exploration and learning experiences indoors and out. “By offering parents various options of how to utilise their free childcare allocations, the facilities will provide more flexibility and choice.”

The World Health Organisation defines Health as “a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, not just the absence of illness”.

That will mean different things to different people. Some may need to reconnect with friends or family, or simply ask for support. Others may want to improve their psychological outlook, either by getting professional help, dealing with alcohol or drug problems or using methods such as mindfulness to reduce stress.

While many people probably woke up on New Year’s Day in a state, I am not sure it would have been one of “complete well-being”! That said, the start of a New Year gives us a chance to wipe the slate clean and make a fresh start with life. Although health can be subject to factors outside our control, getting the most out of life depends upon the balance of what we do physically, mentally and socially.

Or it may simply be a commitment to getting more regular exercise, losing weight or stopping smoking. Whatever it means to you, try not to get derailed by short term distractions, but stick to a longer term plan for 2019!

Why? Well making big promises to yourself at the start of the year is exactly what you shouldn’t do to reach some of the popular destinations in our panel. The Romans started the whole fandango. They made vows to the god Janus in the hope of reward. I’d only comment that Janus was a two faced god and so unsurprisingly didn’t come up with the goods. Neither will a Big Resolution in the month named after him.

A study from the University of Bristol which involved 3,000 people, showed that 88% of those who set New Year resolutions failed. Those who did achieve their goal made it by NOT making a big resolution to start with. Instead they engaged in small measurable steps such as, a pound a week, instead of saying "lose weight"

run once, strained a ligament, put on a couple of pounds by comforting yourself with biscuits and saved nothing. You’ve joined the 88%. Instead, in January, aim to lose two pounds, don’t run, walk one bus or train stop,

drink one less glass of wine a week, buy one less coffee. Repeat and slightly escalate in February, again in March and April, e.g. two fewer coffees and wines, another 400 yards walking. By May you’ll have lost 10 pounds, become a regular walker and be saving a heck of a lot more than a tenner a week from cutting back the alcohol and caffeine. The principle works whatever the goal. By December you could be a different person and what’s more you’ll have hardly noticed it happening.

Legal Matters | January 2019

Legal Matters with Gill Bowman BA LLB

IS PUBLISHED BY:

GYMNASTICS FOR BOYS

This month: CHILD CAR SEAT SAFETY This is a subject I have previously discussed. However, it’s a good time of the year to remind everyone of the rules surrounding car seat safety.

unexpected journeys, taxis and buses.

Although it is clearly not a legal requirement, it is important that children do not wear their thick, cosy jackets or snow suits while strapped into their car seats as the belts are unable to be tightened enough to secure them appropriately. Children can be vulnerable passengers in motor vehicles and therefore the law does provide that any child under 135cm in height or 12 years of age must use an appropriate restraint, with certain exceptions of

Car seats must be EU approved and should have the required (E) label. All children under three years old must use a car seat, whether they are traveling in the front or back. In the event there is no seatbelt to allow the appropriate seat to be fitted then the child should not travel. It is also important to be aware that you must not use a rearfacing child seats where a front airbag is activated. It is the driver’s legal responsibility to ensure that children are using the correct restraint. Failure to do so is a criminal offence and you could receive a fine of £500.

There are places available at two levels for boys at a local gymnastics class. Beginner gymnasts, as well as intermediate to advanced, are welcome to join the group run by East Renfrewshire Culture & Leisure at St Clare’s Primary School on Waterfoot Road in Newton Mearns. The sessions for beginners are Tuesdays 5 to 6pm and for the intermediate and advanced class it’s the same night from 6pm to 7pm. The boys classes are a new addition for 2018/19 and offer the same fundamentals as other recreational classes but are tailored to progressing skills that are specific to men's gymnastics. CASE STUDY

Jane B, 82, Lanarkshire After losing her husband, Jane wanted to make some changes to her Power of Attorney, something she already had in place. Unaware she could have two people named as her Power of Attorney, the 82-year-old was advised by ILAWS that she could,

and so appointed her two nieces to take on her financial and medical decisions should she become too ill to do so. Mrs B, who does not keep too well, wanted her Power of Attorney drawn up fast – but her previous solicitor took more than

three months to arrange it. So she contacted ILAWS, and is grateful that she did, because just a month later everything was in place. Mrs B, from Lanarkshire, said: “I wanted it changed quickly because I am in poor health, I am a widow and I have no family of my own. Within two days of contacting ILAWS by phone, they were out at the house. I told them what I wanted, and the personal attention I got over the phone and

£1M COUNCIL GAS PROGRAMME Senior Savvy with Tasnim Rehman

This month: EVERY CLOUD HAS A SILVER LINING Every day, elderly Britons still face feelings of loneliness and isolation at home. • almost half of all people aged 75 and over live alone. Pictured from left to right: Housing and Maintenance Services Convener, Councillor Danny Devlin, Mrs Margaret Gray, Costa Leropoulous and Gary Dunkley from Citytech

A £1 million project to modernise the heating systems in hundreds of council homes is now underway. East Renfrewshire Council has invested in the gas heating programme that will see the replacement of outdated electric heating and gas-fired boilers. The contemporary gas systems will be more economical and will mean many residents can save money on their gas and electricity bills. The Scottish Government requires the council to meet Energy Efficiency Standards for Social House regulations – and this new programme will ensure that this happens. The council reports that there are currently 252 properties that have

• one in 10 people aged 65 say they always, or often feel lonely – just over a million people in the UK alone. • In March 2018, The Silver Line helpline – a free 24-hour helpline founded by Dame Esther Rantzen supporting the UK’s over 55s, took 48,070 calls from lonely and isolated older people, 24 % more than the same month a year ago. 53% of their callers say they have no one else to talk to.

already had new systems installed by City Technical Services.

Loneliness is not about how many people you see but more the quality of social interaction.

It’s hoped that another 100 properties in the region will be issued with new systems by March this year.

Causes:

Margaret Gray, a local resident who has benefitted from the new heating programme, said: “I am really pleased to have this system installed in my home, especially considering the harsh winter we experienced last year. “The engineers were very tidy, efficient and friendly. I’d recommend anyone else who is offered the service to take advantage.”

A series of classes are lined up for 2019, encouraging East Renfrewshire people to get hands-on with heritage, history and ancestry.

The group usually meets at Whitelee but this winter it is touring different parks. Walks are usually about four miles, which takes around 1.5 hours with parents pushing their babies in pushchairs and strollers. The walk is free and there is no need to book in advance. See www.eastrenfrewshire.gov. uk/whitelee

A new class, Mills, Merchants and Slaves, will have several sessions running from February to May, and will explore “the real history of the area”, including the families that built large estates in East Renfrewshire and their connections to the slave trade.

WINE CIRCLE WIDENS REACH WALK INTO 2019

WITH RAMBLERS Start the year with your best foot forward on an organised walk.

The Stamperland Wine Circle are inviting new people to join their popular wine club

If Dry January seems like a miserable way to start 2019, you could start a new hobby and join a long-established Clarkston wine club. Stamperland Wine Circle is inviting new people to come along to the first meeting of the year in Busby. Members enjoy a range of activities at regular meetings, including wine tastings, displays by leading distributors and demonstrations on how to make your own wine. There is also the opportunity to gain a greater understanding of the character of different wines and how they go with certain foods.

The club organises an annual competition. Club president Glyn Jones said: “Every member is encouraged to make their own wine that can be exhibited and judged at our annual competition. We have been able to achieve high standards in our wine making.” As well as monthly meetings, the club, which is in its 47th year and gearing up to mark its 50th anniversary in 2021, also takes a stall at the Clarkston Flower Show each year where members

of the public can sample the many varieties of wine on show. The club usually meets on the first Thursday of each month at 7.30pm in Clarkston Halls, however the opening meet of 2019 is taking place on Thursday January 10 in the Duff Memorial Hall, Busby. Forthcoming meetings include The Practical use of Wine Making Equipment on 7th February and, on 7th March, “Old World versus New World", a presentation by Jim Rose of Marks and Spencer. If you would like to find our more then contact Glyn Jones on 07943 435843 or email alfredglynjones08@gmail.com.

The Eastwood Ramblers have a busy year-round programme and in January there are a variety of walks. Saturday 5th January is a six-mile walk from Dams to Darnley, while on Wednesday 9th January there is a two-mile walk in Bellahouston Park. The walks continue on Saturday January 12th, 19th and 26th with a variety of routes and distances. Eastwood Ramblers was formed in 1987 and is part of Ramblers Scotland and the National Ramblers Association. Newcomers can enjoy three walks before they are asked to join the association. WILDLIFE CONCERNS AT PARK fun RECYCLE YOUR CALENDARS

A Newton Mearns park area, which has been ear-marked for a potential new build, has been highlighted as an important wildlife corridor. Shawwood Greenspace with its semi-tended grassy areas, woodlands, hills, a river and a waterfall provides habitats and shelter for the wildlife. One species of the wildlife that has long made Shawwood its home is the Pipistrelle Bat. Local academic and keen conservationist Jennifer McNulty said: “These bats are an internationally protected species. They are also an indicator

Nature experts have reported that the constant decline of hedgehogs in Britain, is often due to fencing and roads cutting them off from foraging.

species, meaning that they indicate a healthy ecosystem. “It’s possible to see the bats at Shawwood, especially at twilight from spring through to autumn, but people should never look for them in their roosts, as it is illegal to disturb them.” Other wildlife that can be seen at the park area include stoats, rabbits, squirrels, foxes, hedgehogs, ducks and even otters. A variety of birds make it their home, such as goldfinch, owls, buzzards and herons. Shawwood is also an example of a safe environment for hedgehogs.

In addition, Jennifer points out that the more tended areas of Shawwood provide the freedom for children to play outside, thus enabling them to see the wildlife as part of their every day life. East Renfrewshire Council has stated that no decision has yet been made on a potential site for a new leisure centre in the Eastwood area. A spokesperson said that a new study would look at the feasibility of Eastwood Park before councillors consider a further report for plans. The Ghosting of Rabbie Burns, by Gillian Duffy is performed at Eastwood Park Theatre, Rouken Glen Road, Giffnock, on Sunday January 27 at 7.30pm. Described as a tale of a “rollercoaster ride of emotion”, the comedy starts as heartbroken author Ariel Winters takes herself to her aunt's old cottage in Ayrshire to get over her cheating ex. As she celebrates Burns night alone, wishing that the right man would show up, she gets a rather different visitation to one that she had been hoping for. The ghost of Rabbie Burns appears to give her some dating advice – and he appears to know what he's talking about.

James Mackenzie

The drama features a variety of songs and poems of Burns, such as My Love is Like a Red Red Rose, Ae Fond Kiss, Charlie is my Darlin’ and Auld Lang Syne. Mackenzie is known for playing the original lead role in the children's game show Raven and also as Gary Trenton in the BBC Scotland soap opera River City. Tickets are £15 (concession £13).
