CLIMBERS BID FOR HEIGHT OF EVEREST £3000 from the Youth Philanthropy Project (YPP) as part of a school competition.

Tieran Zhang and Ripley Gilmore, pupils at Williamwood High School aim to climb the height of Mount Everest

Their bid wasn’t successful, but now the pair are determined to help children less fortunate than themselves to enjoy their favourite sport. Ripley said: “Climbing is such a brilliant sport. It gets you fit, it relieves any stress and it’s really good fun. I’ve been climbing for over a year and I’ve already got so much out of it.

Two teenagers from a Clarkston school have embarked on an ambitious climbing challenge to raise funds for an inspiring charity. Ripley Gilmore and Tieran Zhang, both 14, are S3 pupils at Williamwood High School.

that supports disadvantaged teenagers by funding climbing and educational programmes.

Their aim is to climb the equivalent height of Everest – the world’s tallest mountain at 8848 metres – over three months by completing 2528 climbs at Glasgow climbing centre, The Climbing Academy (TCA).

Ripley and Tieran will need to complete more than 100 routes each per week at the TCA and they are calling for people to sponsor their efforts.

They have a target of raising £1500 for Urban Uprising, a charity

This is not the first time the pair have supported Urban Uprising. Last year, they joined forces to campaign for the charity to receive

Transform your Conservatory into an ALL YEAR round Sunroom

“I really hope that the money we raise can help other teenagers have the same experience.” Tieran said: “Urban Uprising is a really inspiring charity that makes a huge difference to young people. I hope that this campaign can help them to help a lot more young people.”

said: “We are incredibly grateful to Ripley and Tieran for their support. For every £10 they raise, they will be contributing to one young person taking part in Urban Uprising's unique climbing programme. “Ripley and Tieran are young people themselves and it's extremely inspiring to see how passionate they are about helping other young people to climb, especially those who are facing challenges and couldn't do so otherwise." ROYAL BALLET AT HEALTH FOR HEROES SUPPORT LOCAL THEATRE David and James with ERCL's Stephanie Elliot and Carolynne McKendry

Veterans David Martin and James McEwan taking part in the Health for Heroes initiative

The Royal Ballet's celebrated production of Sleeping Beauty will be beamed by satellite to the screen at a local theatre this month. A classic of Russian ballet, Sleeping Beauty established The Royal Ballet as a world-class company. The performance includes Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's enchanting score and Marius Petipa's original choreography, which combine with sections created especially for The Royal Ballet. The screening comes to Eastwood Park Theatre on Rouken Glen Road, Giffnock, on January 16 at 7.15pm. Tickets are from £10 to £15. Call 0141 577 4956 or see eastwoodparktheatre.co.uk.

Veterans in East Renfrewshire are the first in Scotland to be provided with a free health and wellbeing programme. The Health for Heroes initiative, supported by East Renfrewshire Culture & Leisure Trust, gives army, navy and air force veterans free gym and fitness membership, as well as access to one-to-one and group sessions. Veterans can also participate in Live Active sessions with expert health advisors, who can offer a personal exercise, nutrition and fitness plan. The membership includes unlimited access to gyms, pools, fitness classes and health suites at four locations. Army veterans David Martin and James McEwan are both making use of the service. David, who served in Afghanistan, said: “Going

Jenn, who is a chemistry tutor as well as a sports coach, returned to the sport after spotting squash courts at Whitecraigs Tennis Club. She encouraged her two sons to take up the sport and “now they are hooked,” she says.

Jenn Saldanha was approached by Scottish Squash to help in a campaign to increase female participation of the sport. She designed a 12-week programme that combines learning squash skills and techniques with a High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) session.

Jenn, from Newton Mearns, has joined an initiative to encourage more females to take up squash

Jenn, who is a keen all-round sportsperson, said: “Squash has long been in decline. It thrived in the 1980s and courts and clubs were busy. Now courts are either being demolished or used for more profitable spin classes or soft play areas. But it does seem strange because the athletic sport is brilliant to play and great for fitness.”

RUN FOR FUN CUBS RAISE MND FUNDS AND FITNESS “Since October, the cubs have been doing a range of different activities to raise funds for the charity and to date we have raised £2322. For example, 40 cubs did a sponsored hike to the Whangie, north of Glasgow. They invited family and friends to come along.”

The 121st Clarkston Glasgow Scout Group Wednesday Cubs have been busy raising money for MND Scotland

Children are being encouraged to kick start the new year with a parkrun. The Rouken Glen junior parkrun takes place every Sunday at 9:30am. The event is free and comprises a timed 2k for four to 14 year olds. The course is always the same so you can compare your time from one week to the next. It’s a run for all abilities and you do not need to compete against others, unless you want to. The parkrun, which is in Rouken Glen Park, Rouken Glen Road, Giffnock, is always keen to enlist new volunteers, too. See www.parkrun.org.uk/ roukenglen-juniors.

A local pack of Cubs has been enthusiastically raising funds for a charitable cause that is close to the heart of a young member. The 121st Clarkston Glasgow Scout Group Wednesday Cubs have been taking part in various activities, such as a sponsored walk, a bake sale, a bring-and-buy sale and an end-of-year party. The children aged eight to 10 have so far raised almost £2500 for MND Scotland, a charity that supports people affected by Motor Neurone Disease. The Cubs chose the charity after one of the members,

Euan Corrie, told the pack how he had lost his dad to the disease. He also talked about how the charity supported his dad and his family. Cub Scout Leader Tony O'Brien said: “We decided to let the cubs choose what charity they wanted to support. There were three charities shortlisted and after Euan explained why we should choose MND Scotland there was a unanimous vote.

The 121st Clarkston Glasgow Scout Group has more than 220 members, both boys and girls. There are three Beaver colonies, three Cub packs, two Scout troops and an Explorer unit. The Wednesday Cubs are part of this wider membership and meet on Wednesdays from 6.45pm to 8.15pm at the 121st Glasgow Scout Hall on Aidan’s Brae. The charity fund-raising activities will go towards their Community Involvement badge. Tony said: “The work towards the badge has many advantages, including teamwork, supporting others and learning about the importance of community and family.” To find out more or to donate see Facebook or www.121glasgowscouts.org.uk.

REVERSE ADVENT FOR GOOD CAUSES A charity that distributes food and other items to people in need was delighted to receive a wealth of goods from the community over the festive season. East Renfrewshire Good Causes took donations from a number of “Reverse Advents” organised by schools and a church locally. display of loving our neighbours when this happens.

Reverse Advents took place at Kirkhill Primary School and Broom Parish Church, both in Newton Mearns.

“The store is a way for frontline workers to provide additional food and toiletries to individuals in East Renfrewshire, who are trying to help themselves.

Instead of receiving an item for each day of advent, people donated products, including toiletries and groceries.

“It’s an additional ‘gift bundle’ of food and toiletries for people who are identified as deserving of additional support.

The goods are kept as part of the ERGC store at Maxwell Mearns Castle Parish Church.

“Our ERGC store work is in addition to the great services offered by the local food banks.”

Russell Macmillan, the founder of ERGC, said: “We were delighted to receive all the donations and it is a great

Physical inactivity is the greatest public health challenge facing the Western world. A British Medical Journal editorial recently argued that doctors should be more active in trying to address any limiting factors to exercise. One such condition is plantar fasciitis. Plantar fascia is a band of connective tissue connecting the heel to the small bones near the toes. Repeated “microtrauma” caused by pulling of the fascia from the base of the heel causes pain from the heel to the sole, limiting walking or running. It tends to affect people as they get older, but people who work on flat surfaces are more

commonly affected. It is easy to diagnose, with localised tenderness on the base of the heel. For the most part, doctors often reassure patients, as it will often settle after 12-18 months. However there are some treatments thought to help. These include biomechanical measures such as splints or shoe modifications by Podiatrists, steroid injections, shock wave treatment and occasionally surgery. Unfortunately none of these treatments are especially successful, but even if they help a little, we are encouraged to consider them. So don’t let foot pain stop you exercising – try to get it sorted and put your best foot forward!

hacks SLEEP TIGHT The temptation to spend your days off under your duvet may never be quite as strong as in January, however lazy days in bed will leave you feeling even more lethargic. ALL WELCOME AT MACULAR SUPPORT

A group that supports people and their families with macular degeneration welcomes newcomers. The Macular Society host support sessions on the fourth Thursday of each month. This month’s meet-up is January 23 from 2pm to 3.30pm at Newton House Care Home, Newton Mearns. The event is free. Age-related macular degeneration affects the small central area of the retina of the eye and affects the ability to see fine detail. This can lead to a loss of the ability to read, recognise faces, watch TV and more. If you would like to attend contact Jamie Cuthbertson (Macular Society) on 0141 942 1083.

This month: PROTECTIVE ORDERS Financial pressures, family disputes and the excesses of the festive season, can all increase the instances of domestic abuse. The long standing effects of domestic abuse on adults, both male and female, and children is well known. A raft of Protective Orders can be granted at the Sheriff Court including Exclusion Orders (whereby one party is required to move from the family home), Interdicts prohibiting unlawful conduct, and Powers of Arrest. These orders can be obtained by way of emergency applications within very short timescales, and are invaluable in achieving, quickly, the removal of immediate threat.

The Police also have a very pro-active attitude towards complaints of domestic abuse. Perpetrators who are arrested can expect to be made subject to conditions of Bail that preclude them from contacting victims or returning to the family home. Just knowing that the perpetrator is prohibited from residing at home, or from approaching the victim, often gives victims the strength to move on from toxic and destructive relationships, and to break the cycle of repeated reconciliation. Victims should not suffer in silence, should seek advice and obtain Orders as necessary for their protection and the protection of their children.

TEEN’S PARALYMPIC DREAM A fourth year pupil at a secondary school in Newton Mearns is hopeful of becoming a Paralympian in the sport of Boccia. Fraser Somerville, who attends Mearns Castle High School, has already excelled in the competitive sport, which is similar to bowling. Boccia is a game where participants roll six small balls towards a jack. The 16-year-old trains every Wednesday at Holyrood Secondary in Glasgow and has learnt to play the sport from those playing Boccia at Olympic level. He has a ramp to line up the ball and uses a head pointer. Boccia, which is Latin for “boss”, is played at local, national and international level by athletes with physical disabilities. It has been part of the Paralympic Games since 1984.

Fraser, a pupil at Mearns Castle High School is aiming to become a Paralympian in the sport of Boccia

Fraser has been playing since the age of 11 and recently he visited primary schools across East Renfrewshire to demonstrate the sport to pupils.

As parents, we encourage Fraser to be the best he can be – and we hope he can improve in his abilities and take it to the next level. “We are keen to find someone who can continue on this journey with Fraser.”

Children & Adults Classes From 10th February

NEW YEAR Just like every other January, many of us will make a New Year’s resolution, or two.

NEW classes

in East Kilbride & in the Southside OPEN DAYS 1st Feb. 1.30-3.30pm 4 & 5 Feb. 5-7pm

But while research shows that in the first few weeks, more than three-quarters of us will stick to the pledges, within a couple of months most will then give up. In fact, one study found that fewer than eight per cent of people ever accomplish their self-imposed goal.

Make it measurable There should be a plan for measuring a goal, or checking your progression, otherwise you will lose heart with your resolution.

Many people are over-ambitious with their targets, aiming, for example, to lose too much weight too soon.

Ages: 1-3 w/guardian 3-5 independent

Set a specific target, rather than, “I’ll give it my best” target. So you could plan to save £1000 in a bank account or lose a stone in weight. Perhaps you will aim to run a 10k or a marathon, or learn how to dance the salsa.

According to the experts, our resolutions are too difficult to keep for a number of reasons.

A fun, educational programme to improve coordination, balance and basic skills.

Make it specific

As a suggestion, you could plan Others set potentially unsustainable to save £100 per month to reach a goals, such as to give up all sugar target of £1200 over a year. Losing for the rest of their lives. 2lbs per month will give you an Setting too many pledges at once is overall loss of a stone in seven another sure-fire recipe for failure, months. too. New You! Reality check

Be critical of your resolution and ask yourself whether it is achievable, or unrealistic? Is it possible for you to save a sum of £100 per month, or would £50 be more achievable? Is a weight loss of 1lb per month more realistic than 2lbs? Would you be more sensible aiming for a 5k running goal, rather than a marathon? And if you want to take up a new hobby, do you have the time and money to do so? Once you have carried out a reality

check, or asked an expert, such as a personal trainer, you’ll know if the resolution is possible.

Excitement factor Some goals are so dull or seemingly pointless that you will forget about them within weeks. Ensure you are driven to achieve a target, or the aim excites you enough to want to continue. If you want to save money, you could save towards a holiday. If you want to lose weight, pick a new outfit in a smaller size that you can progress towards being able to wear for a special event.

will help you to stick to your plans.

As soon as you tell someone else about your resolution, it makes it more accountable.

It is a good idea to write down your plan and record each smaller achievement as you progress, too.

Having someone encouraging you to become slimmer, tone up, save money or learn new skills

Seeing your goals met throughout 2020 will give you the motivation to continue.

A TREE-MENDOUS PROJECT

Local people of all ages came together to lay down new roots for the community by planting a small orchard of trees. Newton Mearns Baptist Church joined the Tree Council’s 2019 National Tree Week and planted six fruit trees and eight species native to Scotland in their garden. A grant from the UK tree charity allowed the church members to plant the trees in late November with the aim of helping the environment and encouraging biodiversity and wildlife. Newton Mearns Baptist Church is one of 55 schools and community groups across

the UK that made a successful application for one of the 2019 grants. Andrea Young, one of the orchard planners at NMBC, said: “We’ve had an increased awareness of the need to care for creation over recent years. Our planting project is one action we are taking to help us focus on what we can do to care for the planet and the people on it. “We are grateful to EcoCongregation Scotland for facilitating training from The Orchard Project which will help us care for our trees properly.” National Tree Week is the UK’s largest annual tree celebration, marking the start of the winter tree

LEARN TO DEFEND YOURSELF

A self-defence class for adults and children is launching in Newton Mearns this month.

planting season, from November to March. Sara Lom, of The Tree Council, said: “We simply couldn’t survive without trees. They have many qualities such as being carbonbusting, habitat-protecting and good for our well being. But to ensure a green, tree-filled future, we need to plant many more trees each year, in the right places and care for them and the ones we already have.

Krav Maga incorporates a combination of techniques to form an effective self-defence system. The teaching method uses real-life situations to demonstrate a threat, recognise the problem and react with the correct solution. The weekly SKMS Krav Maga beginners’ classes take place at Parklands Hotel & Country Club on Ayr Road.

“Each of the young people, teachers and community leaders planting as part of National Tree Week are truly Tree Champions.”

The adult class is on Saturdays, from 10am to 11.30am, with a class for children aged five to 11 from 10am to 11am. The first session is on January 11.

Andrea revealed there are further environmentallyfriendly church initiatives such as reducing single-use plastic, monthly eco-tips from Creation Care group local litter picks.

SPIDER PARK GETS A REVAMP Senior Savvy with Tasnim Rehman

FIVE TIPS TO HELP SENIORS

This month: MANAGE HOLIDAY STRESS Holidays – Stressfull? Travel, family, guests, shopping... For seniors holidays can bring additional stress, from uprooted routines to seasonal depression. Here are five holiday tips to keep seniors' stress to a minimum.

A popular Busby park has been treated to an overhaul and upgrade over the quieter winter months. Spider Park’s improved facilities include a new wheelchairaccessible roundabout, as well as two new picnic benches. The park is situated next to Cart Mill Family Centre in Newford Grove. A spokesperson for Busby Community Council said: “We are delighted that we have a new roundabout because the old one was around 40 years old and had been repaired several times recently.” Other changes, which were funded by East Renfrewshire Council, include overlaying of the wetpour surface, the supply and installation

of two recycled picnic benches on concrete plinths, an additional spring toy adjacent to the existing one and the installation of wetpour surfacing at the top and bottom of the slide unit. Locals have also praised Busby Community Council for their support and work on the project. One said the park looked “fantastic” and that it will be a “real asset to the nursery community”. You can find out more about the work of Busby Community Council by following them on social media: facebook.com/ busbycommunitycouncil.

1 SET REALISTIC GOALS Travelling and meeting people all day can be physically and mentally exhausting. Schedule ample travel and rest time throughout the day. 2 KEEP SET SCHEDULES Waking/Sleeping/ eating at a certain time, most seniors have a set pattern of doing things – prevent unnecessary stress, check their patterns before planning events. 3 MINIMISE EXPENSE Remember many seniors are on a fixed income. Travel,

gifts, foods can burden the bank account. Have realistic budgets and stick to it. 4 PLAN APPROPRIATE ACTIVITIES A Senior who has difficulty walking or standing may not suit a 6 hour shopping trip. Choose suitable activities and provide wheelchairs. 5 KEEP FAMILY OR FRIENDS AROUND Along with fun, sadness may come to seniors, especially those who lost a loved one, avoid isolation; keep active with local church groups or social organisations.

Knitting is great for mental health and has been shown to alleviate stress and battle depression.

Making your own clothes and accessories is good for the environment too. It is a low carbon craft and uses traceable raw materials. If you spin your own wool from local fleece then all the better.

Completing a knitting project also releases feel-good chemicals in the brain, which help with feelings of better wellbeing. Joining a knitting group also brings the advantage of

There are a number of knitting groups and classes in the local communities, such as Knitting For All: Clarkston & Giffnock run by Helen Howard. She says: “I offer classes for people of all levels, whether they want to learn to knit, want to improve, or just enjoy knitting along with other people.” The classes are on Tuesdays, from 7.15 pm to 8.45pm, and on Wednesdays, from 10am to 11.30am.
