CLUB SNAP UP TOP AWARD Eastwood Photographic Society is delighted to be named UK Camera Club of the Year 2018 after a lengthy and intense competition. The club, which meets regularly at Albertslund Hall in Newton Means, was pitched against 49 other camera clubs from across the UK in the annual contest organised by Photography News magazine and photographic equipment manufacturer Fuji. Between November and March this year, the club entered images on five different themes. The winner of each themed round was then invited to the grand final in May. Eastwood entered photos from 11 club members and were declared winners of the third theme, A Decisive Moment. The other four finalists were from camera clubs in England.

Anywhere in the Complex by Colin McLatchie

Pictured above: Will Cheung (middle) editor of Photography News presenting the trophy to (from left to right) Ken Lindsay, Stuart McCann, Peter De Marco and Colin McLatchie

The final, over two days, took place at the Natural Light Studio complex near Daventry, Northampton. Jim McCreery, from the Eastwood club, said: “Our team was Colin McLatchie, Ken Lindsay, Peter De Marco and Stuart McCann, who completed five one-hour challenges including studio portraiture, landscape and still life/macro. “They submitted a total of 20 images on different themes, using Fuji cameras for all the shots. When the photographs were projected for judging there were some

diverse, interesting and stunning shots from all the teams.” While competition was fierce, Eastwood was declared the winner, some 32 points ahead of joint second placed Leicester Forest Camera Club and Eastbourne Camera Club. The club was presented with a trophy by Will Cheung, the editor of Photography News. They will also be treated to three Fuji speakers, who will visit the club during the coming session. Dog owners and fans are invited to a free event this month, which takes place at Whitelee Windfarm, near Eaglesham.

Another favourite game is a “doggienteering” trail, where owners solve a clue to reach a general area and then rely on their dog’s sense of smell to find a hidden pig’s ear that’s attached to the next clue. Rennie added: “There is a downside to doggienteering however, as one happy owner told us a few years ago, because every time they now visit the windfarm the dog is in every bush looking for a pig’s ear.”

The annual Canine Capers on Saturday July 14, from noon to 4pm, offers a range of fun games and activities to encourage your dog to think and play. Whitelees countryside ranger Rennie Mason said: “We have all sorts of activities for dogs and their owners, such as a dog agility course. “This is meant to be fun rather than in competition and, of course, we provide bribes in the form of dog treats.”

There’s no need to book a place for Canine Capers and more information can be found at www.eastrenfrewshire.gov. uk/whitelee-events.

Walking football is now available at Mearns Primary School on Tuesdays and at the Barrhead Foundry on Fridays

If you enjoy playing football but you are worried about your fitness and pace, a game of walking football could be your perfect session. Walking football is very similar to normal football except that players walk rather than run or jog. In East Renfrewshire there are two walking football sessions aimed at people who are 50plus and who are keen to keep fit and socialise with other sports lovers, but who cannot participate in high-energy and high-impact activities. John Gervaise, Scottish FA Football Development Officer with East Renfrewshire Culture

and Leisure, said: “We are running walking football sessions at Mearns Primary School and Barrhead Foundry and since launching the response has been great. “Not only is walking football a great form of exercise but it is also a brilliant way of encouraging participants to get out of the house, get active and to feel more like they are part of a community. “The classes suit all abilities, including those who are more

used to watching football than participating. The good thing is you can take each session at your own pace. Many people also find the atmosphere is relaxed and fun. The walking football sessions at Mearns Primary School take place on Tuesdays from 7.30pm to 9pm, priced £4.50 per session. The Barrhead Foundry sessions are on Fridays, from 1pm to 2pm and cost £3 per session. Classes can be paid on the day and more information and date availability can be found at: www.ercultureandleisure.org/ article/9125/Walking-Football.

A BIG FIT WALK FOR ALL

MUST BE

The Big Fit Walk campaign is now in its 15th year. A spokesperson said: “Its aim is simple. We want to inspire communities across Scotland to come together for a walk to celebrate the benefits of being active. “It’s about having fun and staying healthy and anyone can host or attend a Big Fit Walk.” There are many proven benefits of walking for health. Going for a walk, even just for 30 minutes, reaps lots of positive rewards including strengthened bone and muscle, a healthier heart, reduced stress, reduced risk of some cancers, better sleep and increased connection with people and places

Walking is easy to do, highly accessible and good for health, which is why a Scottish charity is calling for people to take steps this month. A Big Fit Walk takes place in Rouken Glen Park on Thursday July 5 at 11am and offers the opportunity to join in a 30-minute walk with other like-minded people. It is being hosted by East Renfrewshire Health and Social

Care Partnership and East Renfrewshire Council The Big Fit Walk is the walking campaign of the Scottish charity Paths for All, which has been inspiring thousands of people across Scotland to enjoy short walks on an annual basis.

The spokesperson added: “A short walk is an easy, free and enjoyable way to keep active so come along and join in our Big Fit Walk.” For more information on the Big Fit Walk in Rouken Glen Park call Sine Delahunt on 07894 802349 or 0141 451 0750, or email roukenglenpark@ eastrenfrewshire.gov.uk or sine. delahunt@eastrenfrewshire.gov. uk Also see www.bigfitwalk.scot.

RETIREMENT VILLAGE GO-AHEAD Plans for a £55 million “luxury retirement village” on a former industrial estate and dye works in Newton Mearns have been approved. East Renfrewshire Council has given the green light for the Netherplace Road build, which will comprise around 214 one and twobedroomed flats, 38 cottages and a 24-hour specialist care facility to house around 80 people. It is the first retirement village of its kind by in Scotland and will include a gym, spa, a fishing reservoir and restaurants. Situated off Netherplace Road, Newton Mearns Retirement Village has been conceived by Jewitt & Wilkie Architects on behalf of Newton Mearns Projects to cater exclusively for the over-55 market.

Shazad Bakhsh, manager of property developer Scotsbridge Holdings, said: “Netherplace will be so much more than a retirement development, it will create a vibrant new community. “By incorporating the latest thinking, contemporary design features and activities ranging from yoga to fishing, this development aims to reinvent the concept of retirement living in Scotland.” He added that the retirement village would be “an opportunity to create a community in the truest sense of the word and tackle preconceptions of what a retirement development can be”.

In addition to significant facility and activity offerings, the development will also feature an on-site day care nursery ensuring interaction with the wider community, while the considered layout will encourage neighbours to engage with each other.

Sunday 5th Aug The Handlebards present Romeo and Juliet Greenbank House and Garden 6:30pm. The HandleBards are the world’s first cycling theatre company. Join their’ all-female troupe in the beautiful Greenbank Garden for Romeo and Juliet as you’ve never seen it before! And what’s the play about? Well - Romeo and Juliet fall in love, despite the fact that both their families hate each other. Hilarity ensues … well, sort of. Book your tickets by calling 0141 616 5126

In the planning submission the developers, Jewitt & Wilkie Architects, said the project “will create much-needed sustainable, safe, secure and specific retirement residential accommodation within East Renfrewshire that has not been available to date”. A similar development by Persimmon Homes was refused in 2015, after objections from the community, social health and care partnership and Glasgow Airport.

JOIN THE WONDERFUL WALLIAMS PARTY A book shop in Newton Mearns is celebrating a special 10-year anniversary with a Wonderful Walliams party.

What's Up Doc? with Dr Nick Dunn

This month: PLANNING AHEAD…

To mark the decade since David Walliams, OBE, released his first book “The Boy in the Dress”, Waterstones is hosting a free event. The celebration takes place at the store at 38 Avenue Shopping Centre on July 6 from noon to 1.30pm and children are invited to go along dressed as their favourite character from any of David Walliams' books. Participants can also test their knowledge of the books by Walliams in a Wicked Walliams quiz and there will be other fun activities to enjoy.

a dozen children’s books, including Awful Auntie and the World’s Worst Children. He has been described as “a modern day Roald Dahl”. The Book People website says: “Walliams’ writing is fun, engaging and brilliantly bizarre. His characters are everyday and unique - from Billionaire Boy to Gangsta Granny – and wonderfully relatable even with their eccentricities. “Walliams also manages with all his tales to bring humour and silliness to moving and difficult topics.“

Walliams is a comedian, actor, talent-show judge and presenter, as well as an author. He has written more than

A few weeks ago the Scottish government produced a report on health priorities for the next decade. It encourages innovative and new ideas to bring about a healthier Scotland, and rightly says that “wellbeing cannot be created by the NHS alone”. The key areas for action include creating healthy communities, child health, mental well-being, harmful substances (such as smoking, drugs and alcohol), poverty and obesity. It says that foundations for good health are laid down at home and at school, but currently Scottish people are generally less healthy than most other people across

Parents and staff gathered to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Clarkston Nursery

Clarkston Nursery celebrated 50 years in the community with a party for staff and parents last month. Clarkston Playgroup was formed in 1968 by six local mums and was renamed Clarkston Nursery in 2015 to reflect the fact that it offers the same educational curriculum as other nurseries.

“The team and I see ourselves as the current caretakers of this lovely nursery. There have been lots of talented staff at the helm before us and hopefully many more will follow. It’s a special place.”

On June 12, parents, staff and colleagues from East Renfrewshire Council gathered in the nursery, based at Williamwood Church, for a party to celebrate its success over the years.

The nursery has just 31 children at each morning session, so the staff get to know all of the children well.

Manager Maureen McKendrick said: “It’s a tribute to the community that they have been willing and able to keep this resource available to the children of Clarkston for 50 years.

Maureen said: “We work closely with our parent committee and other families using the service. We consider our parents to be our partners in their child’s first steps in education.” The nursery takes children from the age of two years and three months. See clarkstonnursery.co.uk

Dip into

Summer

The summer holidays are on us and at time of writing we’ve just had a great spell of good weather. It is to be hoped that the school hols don’t bring the traditional deluge, writes Nick Cowie. For singles, couples and families alike the high spot will be getting away from work for two weeks of sea, sun and sangria. But remember you go away to wind down and de-stress.

Plan your holiday schedule for quality, not quantity. Adopting the theory that "less is more" can help you to enjoy your time with family and friends. Plan some time to yourself. Choose something

A quick check around community and local council websites and of course your local Community Magazine reveals a wealth of local events ranging from tennis camps to highland games, art, drama and crafts classes. All the swimming pools also have special programmes and coaching sessions.

You don’t even have to go out. A good one for a rainy day is to have a kids MasterChef competition at home. This works especially well if they have a few friends over. Have a competition for who makes the best pizza. Making dough from scratch is fun (and tiring) but very inexpensive. Plus, an added bonus, you don’t have to cook dinner.

Traditional pastimes like picnics are always popular. Let the children pick somewhere on the map (say within 30-40 miles) that you haven’t been to before and make a day of it. Take a picnic lunch and explore your surroundings. You

This month: CONTEMPT OF COURT Contempt of court is the term used for an interference with the administration of justice. It can take many forms and under the Contempt of Court Act 1981 is punishable by a maximum sentence of three months’ imprisonment, a fine or possibly both. The court process itself demands a certain level of behaviour or conduct in order to be able to function effectively. An individual cannot enter a court room and interrupt proceedings; a newspaper must be careful about publishing details that may be prejudicial to a trial, jurors must not discuss details of a case they are sitting on. A wilful and deliberate disregard for a civil court order could be considered contempt.

A common example of this would be where one parent has an order from the court providing them with contact with their child and the parent with residence refuses to make the child available. Courts have historically been reluctant to impose a prison sentence for this type of contemp.

We hope you are enjoying your Newton Mearns, Clarkston and Busby Community Magazine. The magazine is delivered free of charge to homes in your area and we aim to make it useful, informative and engaging.

However, parties are becoming increasingly proactive in pursuing contempt proceedings in family actions and the courts are showing a firmer stance against parents who are deliberately being obstructive.

We want to write local news about clubs, groups, societies and events in each community, and also nearby. If you have a story that you would like to share with us or an event in the coming months, please do tell us.

You should contact your solicitor for advice if you require assistance with raising or responding to contempt proceedings.

We will write an article about your news or add the event to our monthly listings. Please contact us at info@ thecommunitymagazine.co.uk

Music fans are being encouraged to buy tickets for a series of evening concerts that will play Bellahouston Park this summer. There will be three outdoor gigs, each with their own unique acts, as part of the Glasgow Summer Sessions.

Then on Wednesday August 29 it’s the turn of American rapper Kendrick Lamar, N.E.R.D and Bugzy Malone to perform.

The concerts, which are expected to sell out, take place on Wednesday August 22 when Kings of Leon will headline. Other acts on the night include The Wombats, The Hunna, Everything Everything and Isaac Gracie.

The Glasgow Summer Sessions was founded in 2013 by Geoff Ellis of DF Concerts and Live Nation UK. That year some 100,000 people attended concerts over three nights and acts included Eminen and Kings of Leon.

On Saturday August 25, the audience will be entertained by Catfish and the Bottlemen, Twin Atlantic, DMA's, Peace and Neon Waltz.

Over the years, other acts attracted to the annual event have included The Killers, Paolo Nutini and Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds.

Geoff Ellis, CEO of DF Concerts, said: “We are really excited to welcome many acts to Glasgow Sessions this year, including Kendrick Lamar for the first time. “He is well and truly at the top of his game after an outstanding show at the SSE Hydro earlier this year.” Tickets for the three gigs have different prices, from £39.50 to £59.50, with deals for two-night tickets and also VIP tickets. ALISTER’S HOPE FOR JUSTICE A Newton Mearns man hopes to raise awareness of modern slavery – and £10,000 – by cycling 240 miles from Cambodia to Vietnam.

FUSION FUN ON A SUNDAY

Alister Bull, from Newton Mearns, is cycling from Cambodia to Vietnam to help raise funds and awareness of modern slavery

If you are secondary school age, a bit bored on a Sunday evening and looking for a fun time with other people your age, there is a youth club for you.

Alister Bull, who works for the charity Hope for Justice, will take part in the Extreme Challenge Vietnam cycle in October. He is also embarking on two Scottish rides. This month, he will ride 120 miles from Glasgow to Edinburgh and return. In August, he plans to cycle from Glasgow to Troon and back again over 70 miles. Hope for Justice is a non-profit organisation that calls for an end human trafficking and modernday slavery. The charity wants to establish a safe house in Vietnam similar to a successful project in Cambodia. Alister said: “In 2017, it was recorded that victims of slavery came from 32 countries.

Significantly, out of all these countries, Vietnam accounts for 43 per cent of those who came to Scotland that year.

As well as his cycling challenges, Alister is selling paintings and taking commissions. He has so far sold eight of his paintings.

“It is an issue on our streets and yet a Scottish Government survey revealed that less than four per cent considered it a local problem. I wish to change that perception.”

He said: “Things are going well with the fund raising and I have raised a fifth of my target in donations and gift aid. I am optimistic of reaching £10,000.”

He added: “I have seen how the charity rescue and restore victims, reform society and prevent exploitation. I want to make a difference for others and Scotland.”

Visit hopeforjustice.org/ cambodia/ for more information about the charity and to donate see: uk.virginmoneygiving.com/ AlisterBull.

MORE KIDS TO PLAY GAME

Even more pre-school and primary school aged children can look forward to a dedicated programme of football camps this summer. Adventure Football has moved from Giffnock to bigger facilities at Craigholme School Sports Complex, Pollok Country Park, so that more children can enjoy learning how to play the game.

While younger children will enjoy learning introductory skills for football, children from P5 to P7 will be taught futsal, which is a South American variant of football that is generally played on a smaller pitch.

every week day during summer and those of school age can choose to come for a half day or full day.” Ryan added that the sessions for pre-school children could be an aid to kids preparing for starting school at the end of summer. He said: “We encourage parents to bring children along for one of the morning and afternoon sessions. This will allow them to adapt to

the timing of a school day. It also helps them to build their concentration. “In the afternoon, we bring in more fun games such as football rounders. For kids that have never played football before it keeps it fun, and you don’t have to be a fantastic player to enjoy it. It’s for everyone.”
