YOUTH VOICES IN THE SPOTLIGHT A youth forum is working hard to ensure that the voices of young people in the local area are being heard. The aim of East Renfrewshire Youth Forum, which meets fortnightly in Newton Mearns, is to get young people involved in the big issues that affect them across East Renfrewshire, as well as helping in the community through volunteering and organising events. The meetings are attended by young people from across the area, including members of the Scottish Youth Parliament (SYP). This means that any major concerns can be taken by MSYPs to the Scottish Youth Parliament. Jack Dudgeon, vice chair of the SYP, is a member. Jack, who is standing for chair of the SYP, explained that the SYP’s national campaign for 2019 is about public transport. He plans to seek the forum’s views about “improving young people’s experience of public transport in East Renfrewshire”.

Members of the East Renfrewshire Youth Forum

Since being formed, East Renfrewshire Youth Forum has tackled issues ranging from mental health to littering and debated national matters affecting young people.

and empowering them to be more active in their community.

The young people regularly volunteer at community events, engage with parental groups on important issues and also undertake learning opportunities, with many group members achieving the Saltire Award and Dynamic Youth Award.

Susan Craynor, Young Person’s Services Team Leader at the council, said: “The members of the East Renfrewshire Youth Forum have become so involved in their community over the past 12 months and are making such a difference. The number of hours they give back through volunteering is amazing and you can see their confidence growing.

East Renfrewshire Youth Forum is an invaluable voice for young people across the area, providing opportunities to be involved in the decisions that matter to them

“It’s a great opportunity for any young person in East Renfrewshire to get involved in their community and have their say.”

As the forum continues to develop there is a call for more members – aged 12 to 25 – who are passionate about youth issues in East Renfrewshire and are not afraid to voice their opinion. If you wish to join the forum and have your say email community workers heather.mcviebranley@ eastrenfrewshire.gov.uk or kerry. cameron@eastrenfrewshire.gov.uk The Forum meets every Tuesday from 6.30pm to 8.30pm (during the summer, times may change). The venue for meetings alternates between The Edge, Fairweather Hall, Newton Mearns, and Voluntary Action Barrhead each week.

JOIN A FESTIVAL OF COLOUR Dr Pramod Sarode, treasurer of East Renfrewshire Hindu Cultural & Welfare Association, said that as well as celebrating togetherness, events like this educate young people in Scotland about long-held cultural traditions.

Sophie Perrie, aged 7, from Busby Primary at Festival of Colour 2018

Local people are invited to get ready to celebrate the region’s diversity of colour and culture at a popular annual festival this month. The Festival of Colour takes place in Rouken Glen Park in Giffnock on July 27, from noon to 4pm. Based on the traditional Hindu festival of colour, Holi, the local Festival of Colour also aims to bring people together regardless of colour, creed or class. During the event, a rainbow of colours is thrown into the air –

and at each other – to celebrate diversity. The festival is now in its sixth year in East Renfrewshire and last year scores of families from all backgrounds gathered in the park near the pond for a free afternoon of cultural dancing, music, demonstrations, stalls and a parade. For most adults and children, the highlight was the colourful powder-throwing party.

Dr Sarode added: “We support the event as it brings communities together and keeps the culture going. As an association we’re trying to promote Hindu culture for our children and the next generation, as well as letting everyone else know what happens in other cultures. It is very important to introduce our children to traditions that have been passed on to us. “East Renfrewshire is a multicultural area and it is getting more and more multi-cultural every day.” The festival is jointly organised by East Renfrewshire Faith Forum, Diversity ER and the council. Participants are advised to wear old clothes. See www.roukenglenpark.co.uk. www.roukenglenpark.co.uk. www.roukenglenpark.co.uk

A lucky Giffnock woman won a VIP party plane for 99 of her friends – and a weekend away – in a special celebratory Jet2 competition. Kirsty Connor beat thousands of people from across the UK after submitting her entry, “Just Plane Lucky”, to the British airline’s Party Plane contest. The competition was launched in honour of the 100th plane joining the Jet2 fleet. Kirsty, 36, created a video based on the soundtrack to the TV advert for Jet2holidays with content that included lucky pants, a cake with the theme of celebrity Rylan Clark-Neal and fancy-dress outfits. Kirsty’s prize allowed her to invite 99 friends to jet away on a fun-

packed weekend on the Spanish island of Majorca. The local mum chose to take members of an online group that she joined when she was on maternity leave. Kirsty’s husband John came, too, as well as TV personality Rylan (pictured). Kirsty said: “I feel plane lucky to have been captain of my own VIP party plane for the weekend.” The weekend included a treasure hunt, time to relax and explore and a quiz. It culminated in a gala night

with fancy dress, buffet and drinks based on the “lucky” theme. A further surprise for the passengers was being treated to a DJ set by the popular band Rudimental. Rylan said it had been an absolute pleasure to share the weekend, which took place earlier this summer, with “100 lovely passengers”. He said: “We’ve all had the best time and just like the passengers, I feel very lucky to have been part of it.” Kirsty and John, who have a four-year-old son, were presented with an additional surprise, a Jet2 holiday to a destination of their choice in Europe.

JANIS BLAZES NEW TRAILS Janis Mcarthur founder of Wild Stag Trail Adventures with one of her Jack Russell dogs

She believes that there is a growing • Flooring Bathrooms demand Doors for guided trail•running. • Velux Windows She said: “IKitchens did some market research and discovered that most folk prefer to have someone guide them when running in new places. Guided runs encourage people to go to new places, run more hills and also allow people to make new friends.” Wild Stag runs average about 10km in distance and the pace is described as “social”. Janis said: “The aim is to be allinclusive and no one should feel it’s too fast or advanced for them.

An enthusiastic trail runner has launched a new series of guided outings for people of all experiences and fitness levels. Janis Mcarthur launched Wild Stag Trail Adventures earlier this year with regular runs in the Glasgow southside area. She also guides runs to popular local hills and viewpoints. Janis, of Summerston, Glasgow, said: “I started Wild Stag after many years of leading a canicross group in Pollok

Park. Canicross is trail running while attached to a dog. “This sport helped me to lose weight. It also got me out exploring trails and took me all over Scotland for races.” Janis decided to quit her job to train as a fitness instructor and now teaches fitness classes, as well as leading guided trail runs.

“Most of the runs involve an uphill as this is where you see the best views. During the runs we stop at certain points, where I offer some history or information on the area.” Each guided run is £6 and they all finish at a local café for a cuppa, cake and a chat. The next Wild Stag guided run in Pollok Park is on June 30, while other runs take place in July including Strathclyde Park to Barons Haugh on the 14th and Edenmill to Queen’s View on the 28th. Claire Ramsay, the lead at Tomorrow’s Older People, said: “Concerns about transport issues have been raised among older people and also those who want to get to work or appointments yet do not own a car.”

A resident, Audrey, decided to set up the car pool specifically for villagers. She is originally from the Scottish Highlands where car sharing is something that is seen as “the norm” in rural areas. Audrey is now working with her local community council to grow this project.

VISION ON FOR SUMMER CAMPS A multi-sports camp is expanding into East Renfrewshire this summer with new coaching for children aged four to 14. Vision Coaching camps will take place daily from 8am to 6pm during the school summer holidays. There are full week, full day and half-day options at the camps at the GHA Rugby Club in Giffnock. Founder Andi McElnea said: “Vision Coaching is very excited to be bringing something totally different to Giffnock this summer. Like no other sports camp, child development is at the heart of what we do.” The concept has been running successfully in Ayrshire for almost a decade. The aim is to provide a camp that gives the children an experience

that is exciting, engaging and educational. Children learn and develop fundamental sports skills in a range of sports, such as football, tennis, hockey, cricket, dodgeball and more. All sports are taught by skilled and professional staff. Vision Coaching incorporates an ethos of developing the confidence, communication and teamwork skills of camp participants. One parent said: “My daughter loved her time at sports camp. It did her the power of good and really boosted her confidence with sports.” See www.visioncoachingcamps.com.

Space is critical in every home. Think of the number of times you’ve thought “it would be good to keep this, the problem is where? Well, how about your loft? In the average home it accounts for between a quarter to one-third of the volume. That’s a huge area that can add so many uses and benefits to family life. Perhaps it’s difficult to get into? Not floored for storage or use? Local company Access4lofts solve all these problems with simplicity. They specialise in developing lofts for storage.

Boarded and useful...

Safe access to your loft...

With the problems of moving house today, not to mention all the stress of the move, this is a simple solution which adds value to your property. With a safe ladder giving access to your loft everybody can store their goodies away from the living area. And, if you are planning to sell your home, easy access to the loft space could give your home the advantage over other houses your buyer might be looking at.

The majority of properties have an access hatch to the space in the loft. Access4Lofts create space the easy and affordable way. They can supply and install a new loft hatch and a safe, sturdy aluminium loft ladder in your home in just one day! That means that your dark and dismal roof space suddenly becomes a useful storage area for all that family clutter.

Another option is to install a loft hatch and ladder and board out a decent sized area of your loft. This gives you somewhere to store the suitcases or keep your Winter/Summer clothes. As soon as you have this additional space you’ll wonder how you lived without it for so long.

Added property value exceeds fitting cost...

CBT focus on weight A Cognitive Behavioural Therapist has launched a series of weight management events in Newton Mearns.

The one-day courses take place in Parklands Hotel and Country Club, Ayr Road, and focus on utilising Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) to lose and manage weight. Andrew Kiani, who has recently retired from the Royal Air Force, brings many years of experience in the mental health industry, working with military personnel and civilian clients, to the events. He said: “The sessions are for people who feel defeated by their apparent inability to lose weight and keep it off. CBT has an excellent track record of success when applied to weight management and can help people to manage cravings, to say no to the wrong foods and to prioritise an individual’s own health and well-being. “With an evidence-based cognitive behavioural approach you can start to take back control by increasing

your awareness and understanding of your relationship with food, learn how your thinking influences your decisions and realise why we get stuck in unhealthy patterns of behaviour.” During the inaugural workshop in May, participant Gordon said: “I learned so much. Andy explains what can be a complicated and emotional subject in such a way that I felt at ease throughout the session. I feel in a great place to start my CBT weight loss journey.” Andy is keen to introduce the CBT approach to a wider audience. He said: “With over a decade developing and facilitating CBT focused weight management groups for military personnel and civilians, I feel passionate about introducing this approach to a more people.”

The CMS is the organisation which has jurisdiction over decisions regarding child maintenance. The CMS will then

Non-resident parents should be encouraged to support their children and indeed the work of the CMS.

HOW TO HAVE AN ACE TIME the camps are run by qualified LTA coaches at Giffnock Tennis, Squash and Hockey Club on Percy Drive.

GARDEN TIME FUN FOR KIDS

If you are wondering how to keep the kids entertained during the summer holidays it might be worth a trip to a local garden. National Trust for Scotland (NTS) Greenbank Garden has activities for all ages starting this month. The Little Garden Kingdom challenge will run throughout July and August. Using a map, participants explore the garden looking for items that have been left behind by the “little people”. There is a prize at the end for completing the task. At the end of August, there is the chance to put on wellington boots to take part in some muddy fun on the woodland trail, followed by a hot chocolate treat in the property’s café. Greenbank’s front lawn is being

transformed into an outdoor venue, too, with plans to host a Mad Hatter’s Tea Party, featuring Alice, the Mad Hatter and White Rabbit. Fancy dress is encouraged. July also offers a presentation of the Gangsta Granny escapades, followed, in August, by productions of the enchanting story of The Secret Garden and the amusing and romantic Sense and Sensibility. The latter will be accompanied by live music. Details of events can be found on Facebook: @greenbankgarden and on the NTS website at www.nts.org.uk/visit/places/ greenbank-garden/events.

Sessions run from 9am to 12pm and 1pm to 3.30pm, with early drop off from 8.15am and late pick up at 4pm available to those who book in advance. Children aged five to 14 are invited to join a series of Kids Summer Tennis Camps.

There are different classes to suit different ages. There are discounts for club members.

Operating Monday to Friday from 1st July to 16th August,

NEW BUILD FOR NURSERY CLASS Senior Savvy A Newton Mearns nursery class is ear-marked for relocation in 2020. Crookfur Primary Nursery Class will be relocated to the new Crookfur Family Centre, which is being built to replace the current Crookfur Pavilion. Building work will start this summer. The family centre will continue to be managed by Crookfur Primary head teacher and will offer more places than at present, as well as opening all year round, rather than just term time.

with Tasnim Rehman

Crookfur Pavillion will be replaced with the new Crookfur Family Centre

Relocating the nursery class to the pavilion site will also mean that the former nursery class accommodation can be used by the primary school from August 2020. The move is part of the council's early years expansion plan.

COMMUNICATION STRATEGIES FOR PEOPLE LIVING WITH DEMENTIA

Communication Is vital to our well-being. People living with Dementia slowly may lose their language skills and their ensuing quality of life. As family and as friends, understand how you can communicate better with your loved ones. • Realise your Challenge: Be prepared, your loved one will get worse over time and communication will become more difficult. • Be Patient: Communication is effectively one of the greatest challenges seniors with dementia face – tolerate delays compassionately. • Offer Reassurance: Listen attentively and empathise even if they are delusional, confused, hesitating or angry. • Minimize background noise: With dementia, this can be disturbing and confusing.

• Avoid arguing: Use simple sentences, clear warm tones, do not contradict and do not speak to them as you would to a child. • Use Nonverbal Cues: Gestures, touch and facial expressions can assist communication. • Keep it Simple: Two or three threads of conversation may be a lot to handle. • Be Sensitive: Don’t talk about them as if they are not there. • Take a break: Dealing with Dementia can be challenging, frustrating and lonely. Seek advice and support – this will only help you and your loved one.

MAX ON IMOGEN’S CHARITY CHOP A Busby schoolgirl has had her long locks cut off so they can be used to make wigs for children who have suffered hair loss. Eight-year-old Imogen Rossavik was inspired by her Aunty Lorna and a family friend – both of whom lost their hair during chemotherapy treatment for cancer – to have seven inches of her hair chopped in aid of The Little Princess Trust. Donating hair to the charity has been something Imogen had been planning for some time, but she had to wait until her hair had grown long enough. The Trust accepts a minimum length of 7 inches of hair. Last month, the scissors came out and Imogen’s hair was tied in a ponytail before being cut short at her hairdressers. She is now sporting a bob and her hair will

be weaved into a real-hair wig for a child who has lost their hair through cancer treatment, or other conditions. There were two special reasons why Imogen went for the chop. The primary three pupil at Busby Primary School said: “I wanted to do this because my aunty had breast cancer and she had nasty medicine that made all her hair go away. My cousin Katie had the same thing a wee while ago. “I loved my long hair, but I really like my shorter hair. My hair will go to charity and it will be used to make a wig. It makes me feel good. Once my hair grows back, I might do it again.”

Before donating, there are guidelines to follow. For example, hair must be at least seven inches long, in good condition, and not dyed or highlighted. The hair is then weaved into a wig, which is matched closely to the recipient’s natural colour and, because it is real hair, it can be cut, curled and styled. Imogen now has a message for other girls considering going for a shorter look. She said: “Make sure you cut your hair, if it’s long, to help other people and send it to the Little Princess Trust.” Imogen’s proud mum Rona said: “This is something Imogen has been talking about for ages. We are really proud of her.” See The Little Princess Trust website www.littleprincesses.org.uk.

ROAD TO MOVIES

Handcrafted Kitchens Bedrooms & Home Studies

Now he has received an unconditional offer to study an HNC in Film and Television studies at City of Glasgow College and will move into third year at Edinburgh Napier University once he has completed his HND. Max, of Stamperland, said: “The Creative and Digital Media Foundation apprenticeship course was a real stepping stone for me, helping me to progress and decide which career path I wanted to take. The first year of the course was mainly theory based, where we learned something different from each college, while the second year

Max was then selected to share his experiences as part of a panel during a ceremony at Glasgow’s City Chambers to mark the completion of his Foundation Apprenticeship. He also met Jamie Hepburn, Minister for Business, Fair Work and Skills. Janie McCusker, chair of Glasgow Colleges’ Regional Board, handed out their certificates. She said: “We’ve been impressed with Max and all the pupils who have completed their Foundation Apprenticeships. Glasgow’s three colleges worked closely with Skills Development Scotland, the council, the Scottish Government and the wider business community. These young people have developed valuable skills, knowledge and experience.” Find out more about Foundation Apprenticeships at: www.apprenticeships.scot/fa.

TOP MARKS FOR ST NINIAN’S

RUN THE BLADES

A Giffnock school goes to the top of the class after achieving the best secondary inspection report to be issued by Education Scotland.

This month sees a series of trail running races at Whitelee Wind Farm, near Eaglesham. On Friday July 19 at 7.30pm there is a 10k race, then on Saturday July 20, participants can take part in a half marathon (13.1 miles) or a 50k ultra distance race. Runners will enjoy the traffic-free environment and experience a unique opportunity to race beneath the towering wind turbines. There will be route signage, marshals, a race medal, a t-shirt and a goody bag for runners. There are limited spaces for these races so check out the website www.breakingstrain.co.uk/runthe-blades as soon as you can.

St Ninian's High School has been praised for the overall holistic education provided after inspectors scrutinised four areas of work during the week-long visit. The school achieved two “excellent” evaluations and two as “very good”. The qualities of “raising attainment and achievement” and “leadership of change” were recognised as being sector-leading, while “learning, teaching and assessment” and “ensuring wellbeing, equality and inclusion” were evaluated as very good. Head teacher John Docherty's leadership was singled out for high praise, with the entire senior leadership team also credited with helping deliver “outstanding outcomes” for pupils over a sustained period of time.

Mr Docherty has been at the helm of the school, where pupils regularly achieve some of the top exam results in the country, for 14 years. He said: “It is an absolute privilege to be head teacher at St Ninian's High School and this excellent inspection report

is reward for all the hard work put in by staff, pupils and parents over many years. “We always strive to provide the very best education for all our pupils, with a strong focus on giving them the skills they will need for later life.” Councillor Paul O'Kane, Convener for Education and Equalities, said: “This is an outstanding inspection report for St Ninian's and I'm delighted for everyone at the school.” See www.st-ninians.e-dunbarton.sch.uk.
