SUPERHEROES AT NEW TENNIS COURTS FOR PARK SUNNINGDALE

Superheroes stopped by a local petrol station to give a helping hand and raise money for a good cause.

Sunningdale petrol station in Newton Mearns hosted a superhero weekend, donating funds raised to Clyde One’s Cash for Kids, which helps children in Glasgow and the west of Scotland. Firemen came along to "show the local children who the real heroes are" and the kids took part by drawing their favourite heroes. The store hosted a raffle and had plenty of buckets in store to collect the cash donations from shoppers over the course of the weekend.

Work has started on new tennis courts at popular Rouken Glen Park in Giffnock after a cash injection from East Renfrewshire Council. The £80,000 investment will deliver two public courts to further enhance the park and offer opportunities for residents to get more involved in sport. It is expected that the new courts, which are being built next to the skate park, will be completed by the summer. Council Leader Tony Buchanan said: “I'm delighted to see work now under way to build these additional sporting facilities in Rouken Glen. It is great news for local residents.” The tennis courts will further enhance the attractions of

Rouken Glen, which was crowned the UK’s best park in 2016. Councillor Alan Lafferty, Convener for Environment, said: “The tennis courts build on a recent £3m investment to create a new playpark, refurbish the visitor centre and redevelop the walled garden.” The investment is being made by the Council to replace the two courts that were previously located in Stamperland, prior to the land being sold by the owners for development.

MAGICAL FRUIT Bananas are the magical fruit, because they heal many common problems on the skin. By rubbing the peel on your skin, you can heal bruises and cuts and eliminate rashes, itching and warts. Basically if you have a common skin problem, it can be cured by this fruit.

NASTY BITES To soothe insect bites dissolve two tablets of alka seltzer into a glass of water. Then use a cloth or cotton ball to apply it to the affected area. The red will go down and most importantly, the itchiness will vanish usually in fifteen minutes.

RUN YOUR BLADES RACE If you are keen to take your running to the next level but don’t want to travel too far, a series of trail races could be perfect for you. Run the Blades is a unique event held at the UK’s largest on-shore wind farm, Whitelee Wind Farm, near Eaglesham, and offers a 10k race on Friday July 20 and a half marathon and 50k ultramarathon on Saturday July 21. All three of the routes follow trails through mixed moorland and trees and pass below wind turbines that tower to 140 metres. On a clear day, the wind farm offers views across to Glasgow and even to the coast of Northern Ireland in the distance. There is also a chance to spot a wide variety of wildlife at the high moorland location. Run the Blades is organised by Breaking Strains Events,

and supported by Whitelee Countryside Ranger Service, with help from the Eaglesham community. The 10k is billed as “the perfect introduction to trail running” and offers a relatively easy but rolling route. There are limited spaces for this race on the Friday at 7.30pm. The Half Marathon on the Saturday starts at 10am and offers people who have already run a few 10k events the next

step up. It’s an undulating course with a total ascent of around 265m. The 50k Ultra starts at 9am on the Saturday and will attract people who have already been training for a longer distance trail run. The total ascent is 749m. All entries to the races close on June 20. See www.breakingstrain. co.uk/run-the-blades. In the past decade, since the Scottish company held its first race, Breaking Strain has helped to raise £1 million for good causes and entrants to all their races are encouraged to get sponsorship to raise funds for charity.

THE GREATEST SUMMER SHOW

Late News Friday 1st Cartvale Comedy Night

The Greatest Show is coming to town this summer, courtesy of children from a local drama school. Supernova School of Singing and Drama is hosting The Greatest Showman summer week, where budding performers can take to the stage to perform scenes from the award-winning film.

26-year-old Emma, musical theatre graduate and professional singer, opened her own theatre school because she wanted to create a fun-filled singing and drama school.

The week will culminate in a showstopping performance for friends and family.

Emma said: “We base all our classes on having lots of fun while learning all about singing and drama techniques. One of the main features I wanted to focus on was building the children’s confidence and to see the difference after even a couple of classes amazes me every time.

Tutor Emma Buchanan, founder of the drama class aimed at kids aged three and over, said: “We had lots of excited kids at class when we told them our summer week theme. “We have a fun-filled week of singing, dancing and drama lined up. We are super excited for a week of Greatest Showman songs!”

and without my mum by my side I couldn’t have followed my dreams of opening up my own singing and drama school.” Supernova school runs classes for children aged three and over on a Saturday afternoon at Thornliebank Parish Church, near Rouken Glen Park. The children have previously staged shows, including Grease and High School Musical, as well as Christmas performances. This year’s summer camp will run from Monday July 16 to Friday July 20 and costs £69 if booked by June 9 and £80 per child thereafter. There is also a sibling discount available. This month: HERE COMES THE SUN? During the summer months, we all hope to enjoy the sunshine! There is no denying it makes people feel better when the sun is shining, and helps boost our Vitamin D levels. So how can it be harmful? The sun provides energy as heat, light and ultraviolet rays (UV). Some UV is absorbed in the atmosphere, leaving two forms, UVA and UVB which reach us. UVB rays have a greater risk of causing skin cancer; however UVA causes ageing, wrinkling and loss of elasticity in the skin, leaving damage as permanent as a tattoo. UVA also increases the damaging effects of UVB, including skin cancer and cataracts.

Usually, UV reacts with melanin – a pigment in the skin, which defends against sun damage. Sunburn happens when the amount of UV is more than can be absorbed by the melanin, causing longterm damage. Evidence shows that frequent exposure to UV rays (including sunbeds) or sunburn in childhood can greatly increase skin cancer risk in later life. Each year 2,200 people in the UK die of skin cancer, so it pays to protect. So it’s best avoiding midday sun, use clothing, sunglasses or sunscreen to block the sun (if it appears!), and take extra care with children.

For over 30 years, he has been listening to his customer's proposals and sculpted them into a one-off piece of art that will be treasured and enjoyed forever. Utilising modern technology, every client can see their masterpiece come to life on the screen; before it is etched in precious metals. This interactive experience allows Gerrard to share his design in the most incredible detail; as well as enjoy the excitement of the artistic process with his patrons. Gerrard explains his practice of turning the customer’s dream into reality: “Often people worry that they are not 'artsy' enough to co-design a piece of jewellery with a Goldsmith. However,

there is more creativity inside each one of us than we give ourselves credit for. It's my job to tease that out of each individual and together produce a one off piece of art that exceeds your initial idea". Gerrard describes his impressive portfolio of work, "I have worked with a vast array of precious metals and some truly stunning gem stones, made most items of jewellery you can think of, the odd sgian dubh, whisky bottles and believe it or not – a cottage – (not life size)! I've even experienced the pleasure of producing Deborah Shelton's engagement ring – who played the part of Mandy Winger in Dallas”.

CYCLE SCHEME UP FOR AN AWARD A cycle training scheme for primary school pupils has been shortlisted for a prestigious national award. The Bikeability programme, which has been running for eight years, aims to give pupils the skills and confidence for cycling safely on roads. The scheme, run by East Renfrewshire Council, is nominated in the Scottish Transport Awards for the “Best Practice in Travel to School and Work Scheme” category. East Renfrewshire is one of only two local authorities in Scotland to have delivered the Level 2 cycle training to all of its 24 primary schools. In addition, more than 100 Primary 7 pupils from 10 primary schools have completed the Level 3 course, a significantly

higher figure than any other local authority in Scotland. The Bikeability Level 3 programme teaches pupils who have successfully attained a high standard in Level 2 advanced skills, including journey planning, hazard perception and the use of multi-lane roads in more complex traffic situations. This modern version of the cycle proficiency course takes place on local streets and is delivered by council staff and volunteers, who are assisted by fully qualified Cycle Scotland Cycle Trainers to give pupils a real-life cycling experience.

Al-Anon Kids are in for a messy treat this month as Greenbank Woodland Play celebrates International Mud Day.

The outdoor playgroup, based in Clarkston, host their annual free event at Rouken Glen Park on June 29. The group will gather for ‘fun and muddyness’ with a pop-up mud kitchen and mud painting at Rouken Glen. They are advising kids and adults alike to “bring a friend, change of clothes and a plastic bag and come and get muddy.” Old clothes and waterproofs are advised for the event, which runs from 11am-4pm. Organisers advised that they have also booked the sunshine for the day.

GET READY FOR A

Summer is finally here, home or away, it’s when we recharge our batteries so we’ve been looking at ways of getting the best out of an all too short season. (writes Nick Cowie)

The experts tell us you should spend longer preparing for your holiday than actually lying on a beach. Shivering in your cossie in your back garden on a sunny but deceptively cold Scottish summer day isn’t much fun. So a fake tan it is – a professional one though – no homemade

linens and silks and you’ll have an outfit for all occasions.

Most guys are quite happy in shorts and a tee shirt but in most places the smarter you are, the less likely you are to be categorised as a tourist. The Italians and Spaniards, in particular, tend to steer away from shorts for all occasions, especially board shorts. If you are in the city go for lightweight long trousers – also the rule in smart resort hotels.

You want to be on top form and get the best out of the summer. What you eat will give you a boost. That means fruit, fresh vegetables, particularly broccoli and other green vegetables, dried fruits too such as apricots, raisins and mango give a concentrated source of carbohydrate, making them a great energy booster. Bananas are the perfect fitness food and packed with nutrients – so is the peel. Try the whole banana in a smoothie.

Women heading to any of Europe’s beach destinations should opt for a few simple, lightweight pieces, in cotton,

Exercise is the tough one. We all mean to but somehow life

gets in the way. One easy way to start is simply walk quickly for 20 minutes – make it part of your journey to work, you’ll feel far better when you arrive. Or how about combining a swim with your morning shower. For a long term plan local gyms can tailor a fitness programme for you and you are more likely to succeed with help. Check out the leisure centres – there are plenty of indoor sports and activities children can participate in. The swimming pools often offer special deals and fun days. You go away to wind down and

destress. But that can start long before you go. Plan your holiday schedule for quality, not quantity. Finally, we all know how wonderful the summer holidays can be. It’s a time to be free from routine. However, it can also be a time when we hear a record amount of times, ‘I’m bored'. But these days you don’t have to have a great deal of imagination to come up with the goods. First place to check out is your own local area and a glance at our advertisers certainly will give you a jump start into summer pursuits.

BUSBY MANAGER OF THE YEAR Legal Matters with Gill Bowman BA LLB

This month: GUARDIANSHIPS

A Busby Hotel Manager has been crowned the Hotel Manager (Small Hotel) of the Year at the Scottish Hotel Awards. Juliet Parry from The Busby Hotel was presented with the award at a The Scottish Hotel Awards’ Gala Dinner, held at Edinburgh’s Sheraton Grand Hotel and Spa. Juliet has been General Manager at the hotel for two years. She has a long background in the hospitality industry and has previously worked at the Marine Hotel in Troon and as Operations Manager at the Millenium Hotel in Glasgow. Juliet said: “I’m absolutely delighted because this is a tough category to win, the competition is a very high standard. On a personal level, it’s great to receive

this recognition, but this is more about the Busby Team. I have excellent people working alongside me. We’re passionate about the hospitality industry, developing and growing new talent, becoming the best we can be and delivering memorable experiences to all of our customers.” Juliet is an advocate of the Young Apprenticeship Programme at the hotel and introduced the Culinary Awards for Excellence, a project run in conjunction with schools. She has also seen The Busby Hotel become the Manorview Group’s Training Centre of Excellence.

The process can be complex and the application requires to be supported by certain medical reports and also intimated on the appropriate people.

TABLE TOP SALE

Senior Savvy with Tasnim Rehman

DO WE KNOW ENOUGH

This month: ABOUT PALLIATIVE CARE?

East Renfrewshire residents are being encouraged to have a summer clear out and sell unwanted items at a Table Top Sale. Clarkston Hall will host the event this month and all proceeds will go towards Recovery Across Mental Health (RAMH), which is celebrating its 40th anniversary year. A spokesperson for Recovery Across Mental Health explained: “Currently in Scotland one in every six people are experiencing a mental health problem. Our aim as a charity is to promote the recovery from mental ill health and empower people to build independent fulfilled lives.

“By hosting a table top sale in Clarkston we are helping raise funds which allow us to provide the vital service we do in the local area.” Last year, RAMH provided 250,000 hours of face to face support in local communities and directly supported 4000 people. They also aim to raise awareness and break barriers and stigma round mental health. The event is free to attend and takes place on Saturday June 9 from 11am to 1.30pm. Tables must be pre-booked and hire costs £12. Stall holders keep the money they make from selling their items. Contact Sarah Peach at RAMH sara.peach@ramh.org or call RAMH on 0141 847 8900.

What is it?

What should you know?

Palliative Care is an approach that Improves the quality of life of patients and their families facing the problems associated with a chronic illness through intervention and relief of suffering by means of –

• Palliative Care is NOT just end of life • Chronic Illnesses that do not have a cure can inevitably have life threatening results – Alzheimer’s & other forms of Dementia are amongst them. • Palliative care may actually extend life – This care can be delivered at Home, with the support of other professionals. • Everyone should have access to skilled Palliative care – all people with advanced serious illnesses.

• early identification • extensive assessment • pain management and support • compassionate quality of care • physical, psychosocial and spiritual TEAM WORK Palliative Care can be an important component not only at end of life but also at the start of a serious progressive condition and be given alongside treatments to combat the disease.

Part 2 - Palliative Care shall be carried on next month where I can provide further information as to how you and the family can access further advice.

HERITAGE DISPLAY OPENS

LET’S HEAR YOUR STORIES

We hope you are enjoying the new Newton Mearns, Clarkston and Busby Community Magazine. The magazine is delivered free of charge to homes in your area and we aim to make it useful, informative and engaging. We want to write local news about clubs, groups, societies and events in each community, and also nearby. The Eaglesham Heritage Project can now be visited at the newly refurbished Carswell Centre in the village. East Renfrewshire Council was able to create a permanent display for the historic Gemmell statue collection and the hand-sewn Eaglesham Quilt after securing funds of ÂŁ18,800 from the Heritage Lottery Fund. Council Leader Tony Buchanan said: “I’m delighted the Eaglesham Heritage Project is now complete. Thanks to the funding, Eaglesham can proudly showcase the history of the village, from the 11th century until now, to our community and far beyond.â€? The Gemmell Statues, which were gifted to the former Eastwood District Council by Grace Picken in 1995, are a collection of six life-sized statues carved by Eaglesham villager William Gemmell

between 1840 and 1845. The statues depict local and national characters including Robert Burns and Highland Mary. Through this project, the Gemmell collection has been fully cleaned and restored by a specialist conservator and is now on display. Hand-sewn by 60 local volunteers between 1990 and 1992, the Eaglesham Quilt illustrates local landscapes,

community groups and historical events. The quilt had no permanent display space until 2017 and now resides in the Upper Hall of the Carswell Centre. The project also involved Primary 6 pupils from Eaglesham Primary School who designed comic book stories based on the six Gemmell statues in collaboration with renowned children's author and illustrator John Fardell. SCHOOL ROAD SAFETY BID Fascinating Facts Children at an CLEAN LOCH East Renfrewshire primary school have launched a road safety campaign to encourage more responsible parking.

Loch Ness is the second largest Scottish loch, however did you know that it contains more fresh water than all the lakes in England and Wales combined!

A Road Safety event took place at Netherlee Primary School last month and highlighted why parents and carers should take more care when parking in and around the school, especially at busy pick up and drop off times. The campaign includes four winning road safety banner designs, which were chosen from a pupil-led competition across the school. Children were invited to design posters to convey a message about parking safely and keeping children safe. The themes focused on discouraging illegal and irresponsible parking and driving near to the school. The winning designs were chosen from 100 entries by the Junior Road Safety Officers and the Parent Council.

The four winners were Primary 6 pupils Ben Moulson and Jack Brown and Primary 7 pupils Holly Johnson and Cara Young.

“We want to make sure parents and guardians aren’t unwittingly putting children’s lives at risk.” The winning poster designs have been made into banners, which were unveiled around the grounds of Netherlee PS at the Road Safety event on May 15.

Simon Cunningham, Chair of the Parent Council, said: “Road safety in and around our school is a huge issue for our school. We want to make sure our children can go to and from the school safely.

The school can be contacted at blogs.glowscotland.org.uk/er/ Netherlee

Weekly and Flexi-Boarding at the West of Scotland’s only Boarding School Located in the coastal town of Helensburgh on the edge of Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park, Lomond School provides the perfect setting for delivering an education and lifestyle, which not only inspires personal achievement but broadens pupils’ horizons, equipping young people for education, work and life beyond school.

In 2015 Lomond received a glowing inspection report from Education Scotland and the school continues to go from strength to strength with pupils achieving record academic results in the 2017 SQA examinations. However, for our boarding pupils it offers so much more than a place of learning. Lomond School provides a home from home for children from age 9 and is the only boarding school situated on the West Coast of Scotland. The school’s small co-educational boarding house, Burnbrae, is designed to give its young people as close as an experience to home life as possible. Siblings can live in the same house and house parents, tutors and heads of house all provide a supportive family structure. While many of the school’s boarding pupils come from across the world to experience a high quality British education, there is an increasing trend for more local families taking up the many Weekly and Flexi-Boarding options the school offers. Burnbrae provides their children with routine, structure and support throughout the school week and a healthy commitment to extra-curricular activities and sport in the scenic surrounding of Helensburgh and Loch Lomond.

Life is busy for many families and with parents sometimes working very long hours or commuting to other cities mid-week, our school and boarding care offers parents the comfort and security of knowing that their children’s needs are being fully taken care of when they are unable to be at home.

Lomond School Principal, Johanna Urquhart With the school’s country feel and ‘on doorstep’ access to outdoor learning opportunities such as sailing and canoeing, Lomond School’s Weekly and Flexible Boarding offers families in Glasgow and its suburbs an excellent option for their child’s education and lifestyle.

Modern-day boarding is quite different to what you might expect and can offer comfort and stability in a fun and welcoming environment. Why not come for a visit and see for yourselves? Boarding Open Morning, Thursday 7th June 2018.

JO BYRNE

A great experience having the Bathroom Company completely change our bathroom! All the team were great and such hard workers. Dougie and Bob the plumbers went out of their way to help with design when somethings we had chosen weren't quite right. No hesitation from Richard about changing items along the way. They went out of their way to finish including a small utility. Nothing was too much trouble. The tiling boys and plasterers were also great. Highly recommend. Thanks again

UNA GILCHRIST

It is rare to have a great experience when dealing with home improvements nowadays. However I am absolutely bowled over with the service received from The Bathroom Company. From the first visit to discuss until the last team member left our home I have been impressed with, not only the workmanship but the team spirit. Nothing was a problem while the work was carried out, every single team member totally focused on advising, consulting and making sure that we were completely happy with the work as it progressed. They worked at a pace I have rarely seen with attention to detail the whole time, I would without hesitation recommend this company, truly professional job from start to finish. 2 bathrooms finished in 3 days …… totally outstanding service.

KAREN BROWNING

My bathroom went from yugh to wow in 3 days as promised. From getting advice and help on choosing what I wanted to getting it fitted was great. All the guys that carried out the work were very good, friendly and cleaned up after all the different stages of the work getting carried out. If needing a lovely new bathroom installed and getting a good job done I would recommend using The Bathroom Company Glasgow
