GREAT GRAN’S FIRST BOOK PUBLISHED A 99-year-old first-time author has published a book based on her experiences in the Women’s Royal Navy Service.

Marjorie Lamb from Waterfoot has published a book on her experiences in the Women's Royal Navy Service

After the war, she spent some of her later life in the Spey Valley in the Scottish Highlands before moving to East Renfrewshire and living in Eaglesham and Busby. She is now settled in Waterfoot.

Marjorie Lamb, of Waterfoot, who served in the WRENs from 1939 to 1945, decided to write her book because she wanted to share the experiences of wartime that had such an impact on her.

When she is not writing, Marjorie enjoys spending time with her family, who live nearby.

She said: “Wrens changed my life and taught me so much as I grew up. I wanted to recall and share my happy memories with my family and others.” The book tells the story of a 19-year-old girl leaving the UK as a cypher officer involved with signals coming in from the Battle of the Atlantic, before being posted to Alexandria in Egypt. It reveals the many different people she met and tells of her travels to Palestine and Greece. Marjorie also writes about how she coped with the experience as a young girl, how it made her

grow up very quickly and how she learned so many lessons that she has never forgotten.

the stables around Epsom.

The book also reflects on how her own grand-daughters would have dealt with it all.

Marjorie joined the Wrens at the outbreak of World War II and served until December 1945. She was chairperson of King George’s Fund for Sailors.

Marjorie was born in 1920 and grew up in Surrey, England, with two sisters and a brother. Her father served in the Army in World War I and worked with horses at

She said there were no low points while in the Wrens. She added: “Highlights of my time included going to Alexandria and being one of a group of the

She said: “I enjoy going to Eat Deli with my granddaughter for lattes and carrot cake. We are lucky to live so close to countryside – the colours of the ever-changing leaves are incredible. “I’d like to write another book but I will need to see what happens.” There are a limited number of copies of Marjorie’s book available and they can be obtained by emailing her granddaughter: felicity.lamb@hotmail.co.uk.

A 10th anniversary event to celebrate one of the world’s most historic and recognisable breeds of dog takes place locally this month. The Great Global Greyhound Walk comes to Whitelee Windfarm, near Eaglesham, on Sunday 9th June. The event is the brainchild of Greyhound Walks, a charity that was founded with the aim of socialising and promoting greyhounds as pets by organising local walks. Ten years ago, the small group of volunteers decided to bring together UK sighthound owners and launched what was known as the Great British Greyhound Walk.

“Greyhounds make great companions, walk nicely on the lead and contrary to popular belief, greyhounds don't require much exercise – just two 20 minute walks a day. Although many can enjoy much more too. They really are 40 mph couch potatoes.”

The event captured the hearts and minds of greyhound owners and in 2014 the walk became global, with last year’s event seeing walks as far afield as New Zealand, USA, Europe and even Abu Dhabi. All walks are organised by local volunteers and a Whitelees countryside ranger will lead the GGGW event for local sighthound owners. It is a Greyhound Plus event, which means other sighthounds such as lurchers and whippets are invited, too.

To find out more about the event at Whitelee contact the Countryside Ranger Service on 0141 614 0962 or see www.scottishpower.co.uk/ whitelee. Also visit www. greatglobalgreyhoundwalk.co.uk.

MARATHON BID RAISES £7K

ADVERTISE

HERE

FROM AS LITTLE AS

Gordon, who is also GHK Rugby Club’s secretary, said: “Jim’s the most inspiring person I know, so my main focus has been not to let him down.

Gordon Hollerin, pictured left, from Newton Mearns had his recent London marathon achievement matched by Jim Taylor on his hand bike

A Newton Mearns businessman was spurred on to run a marathon for charity by a friend who broke his neck while playing rugby. Gordon Hollerin, an insolvency lawyer for Scottish law firm Harper Macleod, ran the London Marathon for Hearts+Balls Charitable Trust when pal Jim Taylor said he would match the mileage on his arm exerciser. Gordon, 61, completed the 26.2 mile Virign Money London Marathon on April 28, while Jim, 63, also did the same distance using his arms to cycle a stationary road roller.

£38

The pair has so far raised more than £7,000 for the charity that supports rugby players who have been impacted by serious injury or illness. Aged just 23, Jim’s rugby playing career was tragically cut short after an injury sustained while playing for Kelvinside Academicals. He has been in a wheelchair ever since. Jim, who lives in Bearsden, East Dunbartonshire, watched Gordon running his marathon on TV.

“I have certainly faced my own fair share of injuries during more than 30 years of playing rugby, but I’m incredibly lucky to be in a position that I’m able to run a marathon. It wasn’t easy and it has taken a while to recover from. “I am delighted we have raised so much money for Hearts+Balls. It is a wonderful charity that supports those who aren’t so lucky.” Jim, who is Glasgow Warriors partnerships manager, received the arm exerciser from the charity to help him to be more active. He said: “The charity has supported my family and I in so many ways over the years.” To donate to the cause see www.heartsandballs.org.uk.

BREEA’S POEM FOR HEALTH CALL OUT TO GIVE BLOOD The Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service (SNBTS) is calling for people to give blood this month in Clarkston. The service will be at Clarkston Hall on Sunday June 23 from noon to 3.30pm and Monday June 24 from 2pm to 3:30pm and 5pm to 7:30pm. People need blood for many reasons, such as after trauma, surgery, childbirth or to support cancer and leukaemia treatment. But blood has a very short shelf life and it can’t be stockpiled, so every day the SNBTS depends on donors to help maintain our blood stocks. By giving blood at least once a year, you can make a huge difference. See www.scotblood.co.uk for further information.

One of our Community Magazine journalists has had a poem selected for inclusion in a local mental health arts’ initiative. Breea Keenan wrote the piece especially for the Passing the Time exhibition, which aims to share moving and engaging messages about mental health and the power of creativity. The poems were all centred around the Scottish Mental Health Arts Festival 2019 theme of “connected”. Thirty-one final pieces were chosen for the final exhibition, which were displayed at Renfrewshire train stations and included in the Festival’s Hub during Mental Health Awareness Week last month. Breea’s words were featured at Milliken Park train station. She said: “I was really pleased to have a piece included in this great initiative and to see all the words on display across Renfrewshire. My poem is called Turned On and is about someone connecting with a stranger on the train and building a relationship with them.

QUALITY KITCHEN FACELIFTS

Turned On by Breea Keenan Breea Keenan standing in front of her printed poem at Miliken Park station

“It is a light-hearted piece but has a more serious message around selfesteem and mental health issues caused by constant mobile phone and social media usage. “A friend of mine, who is a teacher, read the poem to her class during mental health week because she thought it was an important message to convey to teenagers.” NHS Creative Arts Co-ordinator Sarah Grant said that the poetry competition had a huge response, with nearly triple the number of poems entered from 2017. Breea, of Busby, is a freelance journalist for The Community Magazine and a media relations consultant. She has previously worked for the Evening Times, as well as other Scottish newspapers, and she has had articles published in The Guardian and The Times.

One day I saw a stranger Not looking at his phone It's funny things you notice When sitting on your own To catch his eye is easy The one not looking down The one who looks ahead Whose face won't form a frown Small talk, few stops, we laugh The train chugs on along Same seat the next day too Then together, we sit strong The scenery seems brighter now Never seen that field before His dad owned a shop nearby Beside that ice cream store No swiping left or selfies No feeling so rejected For when I turned my phone off We discovered we connected.

Breea has three children and is working on her first children’s book with illustrator David Nichol, which they will publish later this year.

CRAFTING A COSY WELCOME A creative crafts group has been on a mission to make a new cancer dropin service more welcoming for patients.

and weekly drop-in services where people can gain access to information on cancer, be signposted to local help or have a chat. There will also be a physical activity programme available, aiming to get people affected by cancer more active. All services are free and are led by trained volunteers.

The Clarkston Crafters have rallied around to knit and crochet items for the new Macmillan Cancer space at Clarkston Library, which aims to support people affected by cancer in East Renfrewshire.

Laura explained: “Many in the group have been affected by cancer, either directly or with friends or family receiving a diagnosis so we hope that the cushions will help make it a cosy and welcoming space for those using the service.”

Clarkston Crafters’ founder Laura Worku heard about the services from her neighbour, volunteer co-ordinator for Macmillan East Renfrewshire Vanessa Taylor. Laura said: “Clarkston Crafters have been on the look out for a local charity craft project, so when Vanessa asked us to make some cushions for the new Macmillan drop-in service we were delighted to be able to help out. “So far we've provided six cushions and a blanket, all hand

knitted or crocheted by group members.” Macmillan East Ren services are being launched in the area in partnership with East

Renfrewshire Culture and Leisure, with Cancer Information and Support Services located in libraries across the region

New members are always welcome at Clarkston Crafters. The next meetings will be held on Sunday June 2 at 2.30pm at Costa Coffee and Monday June 17 at 7pm at the Overlee.

Julia Sagias, from Shawlands, has been transforming homes in East Renfrewshire and beyond for the last 18 months. The Glasgow University History of Art graduate has quickly established herself as one of Scotland’s leading names in bespoke and handpainted furniture, mural and interior designs. She regularly supports charity and local events and donated the bespoke, antique mirror, to Maggie’s Spring Ball for their auction, attracting a £500 bid. Julia said: "I'm pleased to support charity events by donating highvalue items that can help raise funds for important causes." She started her business after her first customer loved her work so much that he asked her to transform his entire furniture collection.

She explained: “I met with James who was looking for some help with interior design. His partner had passed away and left lots of items of furniture in the house they shared and James wanted to change the furniture to suit his own taste. “Word quickly spread and I’ve been taking regular private commissions ever since.â€? â€œEach project is carefully considered and hand-painted. PUPILS EXCEL POP-UP OPERA IN THE PARK CALL OUT FOR AT GAMES U3A AGM

More than 300 of the best athletes from six East Renfrewshire schools took part in this year’s Secondary School Games. The full day of competitive sports featured football, basketball, table tennis, bowls, rugby, tennis and hockey. Barrhead High took the winning trophy home, Williamwood High School took the runner up title and St Ninian’s and Eastwood High shared joint third place. The events took place at four locations across East Renfrewshire, culminating in the winning schools’ ceremony at St Ninian’s High School. The winning teams from basketball and girls’ football will represent East Renfrewshire at the Inter-authority games.

The University of the Third Age (U3A) in East Renfrewshire is hosting an AGM this month.

All the family are invited to a special Pop-up Opera experience at Rouken Glen Park this month. The event is part of Scottish Opera’s travelling theatre, which presents three short shows, A Little Bit of Iolanthe, A Little Bit of The Magic Flute and Puffy McPuffer & The Crabbit Canals. The latter performance is ideal for children aged five to eight. The 25-minute shows are brought to life in the specially adapted trailer that is furnished to look like a miniature Theatre Royal Glasgow. They are presented by a storyteller, singers, instrumentalists and a series of colourful illustrations. Jane Davidson is Scottish Opera’s Director of Outreach and Education. She said: “In

these beautiful settings, magical adventures with lots of fun for all ages abound. “Join us for a trip along the Scottish Canal system with Puffy the Puffer; accompany Papageno and friends as they journey to enlightenment with the help of Mozart’s The Magic Flute, or see The Peer and the Peris from the fairy kingdom fall in love, as the worlds of politics and the supernatural collide in Gilbert & Sullivan’s Iolanthe.” Performances take place on June 8 at noon, 2pm and 4pm. U3A is a fast-growing network of groups intended for people who are retired or semiretired. Members of U3A share educational, recreational and creative activities and companionship. The East Renfrewshire branch launched in 2008 and now has more than 460 members. Chairman Douglas Yates will give his annual report at the AGM at Newton Mearns parish Church on June 19 at 2.30pm. The meeting will elect committee members for 2019-20. There will be entertainment from Irene Conway, a member who has been in the entertainment business for 40 years. June 2019 | What's Up Doc?

LEARN MORE ON YOGA DAY 2019 International Day of Yoga takes place this month with the aim of spreading the word about the benefits of the ancient practice. It’s the fourth celebration of Yoga Day, created by a UN resolution in 2014 calling on governments and people worldwide to raise awareness of the benefits of practising yoga. June 21 was chosen because it is the longest day in the Northern Hemisphere. Helen McGinn is a yoga teacher in Glasgow and the founder of Yogability, a charity that provides free yoga to children and adults with special needs, as well as their carers. She says: “The benefits of yoga are vast, including increased health and wellbeing, improved circulation, flexibility and strength.

“Yoga also offers a toolkit to manage stress and anxiety via the breath and movement. “There is no doubt, speaking from experience, that yoga improves your physical and mental health.” Helen is a keen supporter of Yoga Day. She adds: “Yoga day every year is a wonderful opportunity to raise awareness of the multitude of benefits and different styles of yoga, with a huge choice of classes, for everyone.” Look out for local events to celebrate Yoga Day 2019 or sign up for a class near you.

What's Up Doc? with Dr Nick Dunn

This month: NO PAIN - NO GAIN...? A few weeks ago the Health Department announced that there would be “Government Health warnings” on packs of strong pain-killers such as codeine and morphine to alert people to the dangers of long term use of these for noncancer pain. There have been growing concerns both here and in America that people are becoming addicted to drugs for long term conditions such as back pain or arthritis which are causing a worsened quality of life. These can cause constipation, fatigue, and low mood and often do little to help the patient’s overall health and well-being.

Admittedly it has been difficult for GPs faced with patients complaining of recurring or long-term pain to offer help in the short term, other than resorting to the prescribing pad. The first rule of Medicine is “first do no harm”, and perhaps adding to patient’s problems by prescribing strong painkillers may not be the best option in the long term. Pain is a distressing unpleasant experience but is mediated through three main mechanisms – Physical, Psychological and Emotional. Hopefully we can look to a future where we address the pain problem more holistically and reduce reliance on drugs?

STEP OUT FOR BETTER HEALTH EVENING RACES

fun

IN THE PARK

FATHER’S DAY What Dad wants the most is a day free from any pressure. Sometimes planning the perfect day actually adds to the pressure of Father’s Day! Give Dad a day off. No deadlines, no chores, no fighting, no hassles, no fixing things and let him relax.

hacks SUPER DAD Father’s Day was invented by American Mrs. Sonora Smart Dodd who wanted to honour her father, a veteran who had as a single parent raised his six children. The first Father’s Day was celebrated on June 19 1910.

An evening festival of running for adults and children will be held this month. The Giffnock North Festival of Running takes place on Thursday June 6 in the grounds of Rouken Glen Park.

A new series of walks for better health has launched in Newton Mearns. First Steps Newton Mearns is part of the Paths for All walking initiative, which aims to encourage more people to improve their fitness with exercise. The weekly walks are on Mondays, meeting at 10am, at Broomburn Medical Centre. Health Walks are for inactive people who would benefit most from doing more physical activity. This can be people who haven’t been active for a while and would like to start again, people recovering from ill-health or those who are managing a longterm condition, as well as anyone who has been told by a health professional that they would benefit from being more active.

Each walk is led by a trained volunteer and is no more than an hour long. The format is a short warm up, followed by a brisk walk and then a short cool down at the end. A spokesperson said: “We welcome new walkers who would benefit from being more active. The walks are friendly and provide a regular opportunity to exercise and to meet new people in your area.

A 10k running race will be open to anyone aged over 15, while a 2.5k race called To the Pond & Beyond is for East Renfrewshire and south of Glasgow secondary school pupils. To the Pond & Beyond race for girls starts at 6.30pm, while the boys’ race starts at 6.45pm. The Rouken Glen 10k kicks off at 7.30pm. Race entries are open until June 4. See www.entrycentral.com/ GNAC-Festival-of-Running

Legal Matters with Michael Thompson from Thompson Family Law

This month: WHAT IS ABUSE? In the last 20 years, the Scottish Parliament has introduced legislation which attempts to control and prevent abuse. The standard remedy for abuse or harassment is an interdict. This is known as a common law remedy whereby you have to prove a course of wrongful conduct has been perpetrated against you.

is for situations where adults are not abused physically or verbally but rather controlled financially or emotionally or psychologically. It also introduces sanctions where adults use children to their own end for the purposes of coercive control. This Act introduces further criminal penalties for abuse.

In 2001, the Scottish Government brought in “Powers of Arrest” which can be attached to interdicts to give Police powers of Arrest for abuse.

The question is what is abuse and how can it be prevented. Abuse is anything that can give rise to distress. Many people are victims of abuse and they do not realise it.

In 2018, the Scottish Government introduced the Domestic Abuse (Scotland) 2018 Act. This Act introduces the concept of coercive control. This

Examples of this are being criticised for going out and socialising without a partner or even children. If required – speak to a solicitor.

A Clarkston park is the focus of a volunteer clean-up event this month. Clean up at Tinkers Park takes place on Saturday June 22 from 2pm to 4pm. It is organised by Clarkston & Netherlee Litter Action and everyone is welcome to come along to help with the tidy up, although it is important that any children are supervised. The meeting point for the event is the play area at Seres Road. Equipment will be supplied and participants are asked to bring gloves.

Cyclists should meet at 5.45pm to get ready to head out. There are two rides on offer, a gentle pace beginner route of about six miles from Rouken Glen to Greenbank Gardens and a moderate pace intermediate route of 15 miles from the park to Whitelee Windfarm. Both are return rides. This month the rides are on June 5, 15, 19 and 26. Free bike hire is also available on request but this must be

DISTRICT AWARD WINNER

booked before the rides to avoid disappointment. NDT Cycling request that cyclists send a brief message to info@ ndtycycling.co.uk if they plan to join the rides. NDT Cycling’s goal is to encourage active travel to work and schools, reduce carbon emissions and help to create a healthier, cleaner and greener East Renfrewshire. They group offers led rides, as well as cycle skills training, bike maintenance and refurbished bikes for sale. See twitter.com/NDTCycling and www.facebook.com/NDTCycling or call 0141 561 1201 for more information.

A local hotel is delighted to win best East Renfrewshire venue in the National Pub & Bar Awards. Giffnock’s Orchard Park Hotel, Bar and Grill was awarded the accolade based on its hospitality offering, including factors such as service, product range, aesthetic design and entertainment. Chris Capaldi, one of the owners of the family-run business, said: “We are delighted to have won. It is a testament to all of the hard work that the staff has put in and to the loyalty of our customers.” The district winners go on to compete for the 12 regional winning places and for the overall winner award.

CBT focus on weight

A

Cognitive Behavioural Therapist has launched a series of weight management events in Newton Mearns.

The one-day courses take place in Parklands Hotel and Country Club, Ayr Road, and focus on utilising Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) to lose and manage weight. The next workshop will be Sunday June 30 from 9:30am to 4pm. Andrew Kiani, who has recently retired from the Royal Air Force, brings many years of experience in the mental health industry, working with military personnel and civilian clients, to the events.

Andrew Kiani, brings many years of experience in the mental health industry

He said: “The sessions are for people who feel defeated by their apparent inability to lose weight and keep it off. CBT has an excellent track

record of success when applied to weight management and can help people to manage cravings, to say no to the wrong foods and to prioritise an individual’s own health and well-being. “With an evidence-based cognitive behavioural approach you can start to take back control by increasing your awareness and understanding of your relationship with food, learn how your thinking influences your decisions and realise why we get stuck in unhealthy patterns of behaviour.”

During the inaugural workshop in May, participant Gordon said: “I learned so much. Andy explains what can be a complicated and emotional subject in such a way that I felt at ease throughout the session. I feel in a great place to start my CBT weight loss journey.” Andy has recently retired from the RAF and he is keen to introduce the CBT approach to a wider audience. He said: “With over a decade developing and facilitating CBT focused weight management groups for military personnel and civilians, I feel passionate about introducing this approach to a more people.” The cost of a day course is £50.

TOUR REVEALS DIET HISTORY LET’S HEAR YOUR STORIES A fascinating touring exhibition of food and drink from the National Library of Scotland reaches East Renfrewshire this summer.

Lifting the Lid: 400 Years of Food and Drink in Scotland is a free exhibition that tells the story of our diets over four centuries. It will be hosted by Eastwood Park Theatre until June 6, Mearns Library, from June 8 to 20 and Clarkston Library from June 22 to July 4. The display gives an insight into the eating and drinking habits of our ancestors and how diets have developed over the years. The information is taken from the National Library of Scotland collections and comprises photographs and descriptions presented on colourful panels. The information is drawn from recipe books, food advertisements, photographs and illustrations. Each exhibition panel revolves around a different theme or “course”, covering everything from soups and breads to drinks and desserts.

We hope you are enjoying the new Newton Mearns, Clarkston and Busby Community Magazine.

Porter, Fish-Woman & Journeman Flesher; Auld Reekie, published January 1825 by Pyall & Hurt

Younger visitors to the exhibition are invited to match illustrations to Scots words such as jeelie, collop and snashters. Lifting the Lid has been touring Scotland since 2017 and it represents the first National Library touring exhibition with the aim of introducing the collections to everyone. The original exhibition was held in Edinburgh in 2015 at the library on George IV Bridge.

Curator Olive Geddes, who developed Lifting the Lid, said: “We hope that through this touring exhibition people can learn more about food in Scotland and about how tastes have changed and developed.” See digital.nls.uk/learning/ scottish-food-history/ food-related-collections and www.ercultureandleisure.org for further information.

The shortest walk is in Bellahouston park on 26th June, while the longest hike is to the summit of Ben Lomond (pictured) on 29th June. The Eastwood Ramblers has around 200 members and welcomes new people to come along and join the walks. You can do three walks before you will be asked to join the group. See www.eastwood-ramblers.org.uk

Over the past few weeks I have covered how eating the right foods, keeping physically active and mentally stimulated is vital to protect yourself or loved ones as they age. In this final issue we remind you that In addition to a healthy diet, exercise is also an important part of rebuilding and repairing your muscles and preventing falls.

KEEP MOVING: • Getting up and out of your chair • Standing and stretching • Using stairs – safely. • Short walks with friends or family • Lifting low weights • Swimming • Yoga Activities that keep up your heart rate, keep your mind active. Your brain constantly uses up to 20% of your body’s total energy supply and requires constant access to blood sugar (glucose). Link Social activities into enjoyable mealtimes and encourage into your daily routines.

HELP AND SUPPORT Although families may want to help, many lack the time and capacity every day to ensure loved ones are eating healthy balanced diets. If you are unable to monitor food intake, be aware of the warning signs and alert the GP. Request your free copy of the HISC Stay Nourished Booklet now.

CANCER DAD CLIMBS RIDGE

A dad who has a brain tumour has scaled a challenging route on the UK’s highest mountain to raise funds for a poignant charity. Greg Jenkins climbed Tower Ridge, supported by ropes and a guide, on Ben Nevis last month. He hopes to collect £1,000 for The Brain Tumour Charity. Greg, an advisor with SM Financial Advice in Newton Mearns, discovered he has the rare condition oligodendroglioma in 2010. Now aged 40, he has spent the last year enduring radiotherapy

with a brain tumour, as well as their families.” Greg is a keen walker but he faced what he described as his “scariest and biggest challenge” when he climbed Tower Ridge.

and chemotherapy to shrink the tumour. He said: “After being diagnosed with a brain tumour, nine years ago, I had surgery and made a good recovery. More recently I have had a year of further treatments, including radiotherapy and chemotherapy.

“My tumour has responded well and it has shrunk although it will never disappear. However, I realise how lucky I am. Unfortunately, many people are not so lucky. “The Brain Tumour Charity is at the forefront of the fight to defeat brain tumours, making a difference every day to the lives of people

He said: “I wanted to push myself to do something very challenging so that people will sponsor me and help me to raise funds for my chosen charity. I was definitely out of my comfort zone.” After the climb, Greg, who has two young sons, celebrated finishing his chemotherapy sessions just a week later. SKYE’S HIGH HOPES FOR FINALS

Skye Stander (centre) will be competing in the Miss Scotland finals this month

A Newton Mearns teenager is thrilled to be named one of the youngest finalists for the coveted title of Miss Scotland 2019. Eighteen-year-old Skye Stander will compete against 17 other contestants from all over the country in the Miss Scotland finals in Glasgow this month. The title of Miss Scotland is not just about beauty. The judges are looking for compassion, health and creativity and they are very clear that even before the competition is won, the young ladies are all ambassadors for Scotland. Skye said: “It is a fantastic platform to raise awareness for Scottish charities.”

The final year pupil at St Ninian’s High School is not only contending for the title but also battling against her fear of heights to do a sky dive for her chosen charity, Heads Up Scotland. It is a charity that relies on donations to be able to help sufferers of head and neck cancer. Skye’s desire is to give back to this Cancer Support Scotland charity that gave her family so much support and comfort when her grandad was dying from throat cancer. As well as her charity work, she has taken part in a fitness challenge

and she has created an outfit with flowers for a photo shoot. Skye hopes to go on to university to study law. But if she wins Miss Scotland, she has said her studies will go on hold for a year. Skye said: “Being part of Miss Scotland is a dream come true, which could open many doors for me. Winning the competition would be an added bonus.” Alongside the title, there is a commitment to represent Scotland, as well as taking part in further competitions for the honours of Miss Great Britain and Miss World. Skye’s fund-raising page can be found at: www.justgiving.com/ fundraising/skye-skydive.

It’s important for everyone to have a will. Securing your future and that of your family Couples may be able to prevent their property being taken to pay for long-term care BUT YOU MUST ACT NOW!

CASE STUDY

Jane B, 82, Lanarkshire After losing her husband, Jane wanted to make some changes to her Power of Attorney, something she already had in place. Unaware she could have two people named as her Power of Attorney, the 82-year-old was advised by ILAWS that she could,

and so appointed her two nieces to take on her financial and medical decisions should she become too ill to do so. Mrs B, who does not keep too well, wanted her Power of Attorney drawn up fast – but her previous solicitor took more than

three months to arrange it. So she contacted ILAWS, and is grateful that she did, because just a month later everything was in place. Mrs B, from Lanarkshire, said: “I wanted it changed quickly because I am in poor health, I am a widow and I have no family of my own. Within two days of contacting ILAWS by phone, they were out at the house. I told them what I wanted, and the personal attention I got over the phone and

A local man has launched an ethical and environmentally aware business making products from recycled whisky barrels. Alasdair Lamont, 27, of Eaglesham, is a keen recycler and environmentalist and hopes to transfer these passions to his new business. Cask Craft makes bespoke household items from the staves and ends of old whisky barrels that are usually broken up and destroyed. Alasdair is turning the barrel waste into candle holders, cheese boards, whisky tasting glass holders and key-rings. He also aims to preserve all of the detail in the wood and to ensure that each piece is a unique reminder of the whisky industry.

Alasdair said: “I felt there should be a better use for the lovely wood of whisky barrels, especially with such a great history. “With my father being from Islay, I also have a strong attachment to the whisky industry.” Alasdair currently sells at craft fairs, including this summers Eaglesham Fair, and online through his website and social media. His ambition is to increase his stock to include tables and chairs and other useful household items. Further information see www. caskcraft.scot or www.facebook. com/caskcraftscot
