NEW #NOONEISLONELY out for, and use, the hashtag on social media posts that are connected with people gathering together, as well as events and any messages focused on reducing loneliness. Ruth Gallagher, CEO of Voluntary Action East Renfrewshire said: “The movement will encourage us to make sure that local information is available in as many places as possible, making it easier for people to find out what’s out there for them. Tackling loneliness isn’t just about getting people to join in groups and activities.

A new local campaign is calling for people and organisations to collaborate to tackle a growing problem of loneliness in the modern world. Voluntary Action East Renfrewshire hopes to gather together leaders from different local organisations and businesses to join a local movement, #NoOneIsLonely. Scientific studies show that people live longer and happier lives when they have good social connections and close friendships, yet on the flipside loneliness has

become a public health issue that can affect all ages and stages of life. #NoOneIsLonely is in its early stages but the group is keen to hear from those that share the belief that more could be done to tackle loneliness in our communities. One route to raising awareness is to encourage people to look

The Market Pace in Newton Mearns is one organisation that is already involved in #NoOneIsLonely. STOLLERS’ SPRING RETURN

The Whitelee Stroller Sliders return to Whitelees Windfarm this month

A weekly walking group for parents and babies returns to its summer home this month – and hopes to expand to include more people. The Whitelee Stroller Sliders will meet again at Whitelees Windfarm, near Eaglesham, from March 5. Over the winter, the group has been “on tour” while the visitor centre has been closed on Tuesdays.

ranger and starts at 10.15am. The group is for parents and babies in buggies and this year the invitation is being expanded to include mums-to-be. Rennie Mason, from the Whitelee Countryside Ranger Service, said: “There are many benefits of our Stroller Sliders walks including fitness and wellbeing, and also the chance to meet new people and to enjoy being outdoors as a group.

The Stroller Sliders return to their meeting base at the Windfarm, gathering by the noticeboard at the main entrance, at 10am. The walk, which usually extends to about four miles in total, is supported by a countryside

“The parents and grandparents enjoy a good chat as they walk and many have a coffee and cake in the café afterwards. We are usually finished the walk by 11.30 to noon. “This year we are keen to see more people coming along, especially expectant mothers. Walking is a great way to stay fit and healthy throughout pregnancy. The walking pace is brisk but not strenuous and we make it as accessible as possible to all.” It is recommended that parents use buggies/strollers that can cope with the rough but good

quality trails. Young children and dogs are welcome with parents and babies. The session is free and people simply turn up on the day. To find out more e-mail: whiteleecrs@eastrenfrewshire.gov.uk, tel: 0141 614 0962 or check out: www. eastrenfrewshire.gov.uk/whitelee.

Artistic young school children have been awarded for their creativity in an annual road safety design competition. The competition was aimed at primary school pupils across East Renfrewshire and saw 12 youngsters rewarded for their drawings.

The artworks were used to produce a 2019 calendar, which has been distributed to schools, libraries and council offices throughout the area.

The winning pupils were chosen from more than 1000 entries to the popular East Renfrewshire Council competition, which has been running for more than 30 years.

Councillor Fletcher said: “The calendar looks fantastic and I was delighted to present all of the winners with their prizes again this year.

Winners included pupils from Giffnock Primary, St Cadoc’s Primary, Eaglesham Primary, Crookfur Primary and St Thomas’s Primary. They were presented with prizes and certificates by Provost Jim Fletcher at a special ceremony.

MSP ROSS 'THINKS ALLOWED' The youngest ever MSP and a member of the National Youth Assembly will give a talk at a Giffnock event this month. Ross Greer will be at Orchardhill Church on March 7 to argue that the church needs to rage against and overthrow established hierarchies. Entitled, “A Revolutionary Movement? COME JOIN THE DANCE Local people are invited to a dance the night away at a ceilidh event to help raise funds for an emergency and lifesaving support group. Each week Scotland sees a thousand new births, the most popular names of 2018 being Jack and Olivia. Every mother has her unique story, but there are some common messages for those considering pregnancy. Pregnancy planning should include getting your body into good physical shape. Regular exercise, healthy weight and balanced diet are important. During pregnancy alcohol is best avoided to reduce risk of brain damage to the developing baby, smoking and excess caffeine can affect the baby’s growth during

pregnancy, and avoiding soft cheeses, raw eggs and shellfish to reduce the risk of infections which could endanger the pregnancy. Iron helps make extra blood required, Vitamin D for healthy teeth and bone growth, and Folic Acid helps to reduce the risk of spina bifida problems, so these can be taken as vitamin pills for pregnant women. When pregnant the first step is to see a midwife rather than a GP. They are specially trained to look after women before, during and after the birth, and will be able to answer questions you may have. A really helpful website –

www.readysteadybaby.org.uk – is worth checking out and has lots of info for future mums and dads!

The lives of those lost during the Holocaust were poignantly remembered during a special memorial day event in Giffnock. The National Holocaust Memorial Day event was held at Eastwood Park Theatre to commemorate those who died during the World War II atrocity, and also to remember the stories of those who were fortunate to survive. The evening, on January 28, included music, talks and poetry recalling emotional accounts of the Holocaust.

Visitors pay a charge of £5, or join with an annual subscription of £45. The club is part of the Scottish Association of Flower Arrangement Societies. Call 0141 636 6927 for further information.

The memorial was jointly hosted by two councils, East Renfrewshire and Renfrewshire, and held in partnership with Interfaith Scotland, the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust and the Scottish Government, who were represented by Aileen Campbell, the Cabinet Secretary

A BRIEF HISTORY OF WEDDINGS Queen Victoria kicked off the tradition of wearing white on your wedding day and by the 20th century the chaste hue was the colour of choice for brides.

1919

Bridesmaids wearing matching dresses dates back to ancient Rome, to act as decoys against evil spirits.

1840

Prior to World War II, male wedding bands were not as common as they are today. Men chose to wear these rings while fighting overseas to remind themselves of their wives and families back home.

Automatic photography was patented in 1928 paving the way for wedding photography

After world war 1, as formal weddings became more popular, those without full-time social secretaries realised they needed help wrangling the caterer, the invitation printer, the florist, and the seamstress- and so the wedding planner was born

1987 In 1987 Dirty Dancing premiered and the hit song ‘(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life’ became an instant wedding classic and is one of the most popular wedding songs to date.

The Oxfam Boutique in The Avenue Shopping Centre is one of 43 charity stores across Scotland – and like all outlets it relies on volunteers to help run the shops in support of Oxfam’s lifesaving work around the world.

Volunteers are given on-the-job training and the chance to learn new skills, develop existing talents and take on responsibility. The range of work includes pricing donations, sorting stock, updating the shop’s social media channels, using the till, photography and dressing the windows. Liz Reid, manager of Oxfam’s shop in Newton Mearns, said: “Put simply, without our team of amazing volunteers Oxfam shops like the one I manage could not open. “Volunteers really are the heart and soul of our shops and we rely

At the Bathroom Company Glasgow we offer a full installation service. All work is carried out by our highly experienced teams in as little as 3 days. We also do supply only for our customers who just wish to purchase products

From start to finish Richard, Martin and team were fantastic. I remember on the first day of one of several meetings saying to Martin how refreshing their approach to the sale was and that was what sealed our business. They are honest and professional. The fit was completed in the three days as promised and the team were superb. Absolutely delighted with the outcome. There were minor teething problems but the speed at which my calls were dealt with and the team got things sorted was first class service. Would highly recommend.

Two Clarkston comics will be regaling audiences with their “mid-laugh crisis” at the Glasgow International Comedy Festival this month. Kenny Sinclair and Ronnie Black’s hour-long show, Hairline & Waistlines, will be performed at The Iron Horse Pub, Glasgow, on March 23. In the show, Ronnie and Kenny reminisce about the days when their waistlines and hairlines were not where they are now. Ronnie said: “It’s all about how we have put weight on, taken

The show is also about sharing the trials and tribulations of an ever-changing world while recalling simpler times.” Critics have described the show as “hilarious, relatable and selfdeprecating with a lovely warm presence and really connectable on stage”.

TH DUO It is the second time that the comedy friends are coming together for Hairline & Waistlines. The pair also performed at the monthly sell-out comedy gigs that Ronnie and another local resident Graham Stewart run at The Cartvale pub in Busby. Ronnie turned to stand-up comedy some four years ago to cope with the trauma of a prolonged stay in hospital. The following year, he had a sell-out show at the Glasgow International Comedy Festival. Another of his one-man shows, Absolutely Flabuless – based on how he has lost almost four stones – is also a sell-out success this year. Kenny is a regular feature at comedy nights across the country. Having recently returned from performing in Australia and Malaysia, and having performed at last year’s Aberdeen International Comedy Festival, Hairline & Waistlines will be his first show at the Glasgow International Comedy Festival. Cataract is a clouding of the natural lens of the eye- the only way to cure it is by an operation. No medicine or eyedrops have been proven to slow or reverse its development. Cataract surgery is the most common surgical procedure performed in the UK with about 389,000 operations performed in 2010. The decision to operate on your cataract is taken following a discussion between the Consultant and you. This includes the impact that the cataract is having on the quality of your life, whether it be work, hobbies or driving. The surgery can be performed at any stage of its development. Every operation carries a small risk and your Consultant

should go through these in detail before the operation. It is important that you understand these and ask any questions that you may have. The procedure usually takes between 10 and 20 minutes. The operation is usually done under local anaesthesia (numbing the eye by drops or by an injection of a numbing drug) although general anaesthesia may be used in some patients. It is almost always a day case which means that you are in the hospital for only a few hours. After surgery, you should be advised regarding some simple precautions to be taken in the following weeks.

LET’S MAKE A HAPPY PLACE RESEARCH The aim is to encourage cheer and happiness, conversation starters and present a brighter commute to work.

Maria Hendry, of Tomorrow’s Older People, said: “Anyone is welcome to get on board. Joining in our station planting group is a great opportunity for local people to get involved in their community, brighten up everyone’s day and get creative about growing new connections.” Tomorrow's Older People, managed by Kinworks are looking for volunteers to help brighten local train stations

A community fund is calling for volunteers with gardening knowhow, or those willing to learn, to help to brighten up five train stations. Tomorrow’s Older People, which is managed by Kinworks, was set up to spread happiness in East Renfrewshire by encouraging organisations and people to proactively design services and support that will affect their quality of life in older age. It is widely recognised that it is harder to make friends as you

The added cheer is also a means to highlight the local work of Kinworks, a Community Interest Company that was founded by Voluntary Action East Renfrewshire and Thrive Associates Ltd in a bid to make changes for the better through collective impact.

age. Tomorrow’s Older People is working to change that by promoting a message of happy connections.

For more information or to offer your help email maria. hendry@kinworks.org.uk or call 07927 966 904.

Having adopted five local railway stations – Giffnock, Thornliebank, Busby, Williamwood and Muirend – the group is now planning to brighten up the stations with flower containers.

In 2010, I was diagnosed with a brain tumour. I was initially scared, not least because of the financial implications that might arise. However, the critical illness and income protection that I had in place allowed me to take the time that I needed to get back to doing the things that I love. I am passionate about helping families protect themselves against such financial risks. Gregory Jenkins – Owner of SM Financial Advice
