Emma was selected and the team went on to win bronze. Now she has been selected again to play in the Touch Rugby World Cup 2019.

Emma says: “I love that touch rugby is a fast-paced sport and it keeps me fit. The sport also requires problem solving and team work in a bid to evade the defence and create spaces to allow a player to score.

Emma says: “I am truly ecstatic to have the chance to take part in the world cup event with my team.”

A former head girl at Mearns Castle High School has been selected to play touch rugby for Scotland in an international competition.

Emma, 24, only took the sport up in 2017 after moving to Edinburgh having qualified as a dentist at the University of Dundee.

NEW BLOG ON THE BLOCK A Clarkston mum has started an outdoor family adventure blog to give people in the area ideas about how to spend time outside.

Adventure Blogger Hilary Young and her family exploring outdoors

APPROVED DOMESTIC ELECTRICIAN REQUIRED Excellent bonus scheme • SJIB Rates Send your CV to ledgerwoodselectrical@gmail.com

Hilary Young runs her pages across social media platforms in a bid to encourage families in the area to spend more time outdoors. The mum started writing her adventure blog as a way to help her own kids, aged six and four, to foster a love for the natural world. Hilary said: “I started Adventures in East Ren last year as a way to encourage myself and my kids to get outside more to play and to experience more of what is going on in our local area. “We moved here three years ago so this has been a great way to discover the natural environment on our doorstep and get to places we had never been before. “I wanted to do this with other

people and make a connection locally with other families, which has been great as they have all shared ideas and tips via the campaign across the platforms.” Hilary, who also works full-time, was conscious of the implications between balancing time for outdoor adventures and family life. She explained: “Our family life is busy, with work, school and nursery like many other people.

“Adventures in East Ren aims to bridge the gap between nature, time and families by providing accessible, practical tips and ideas for parents to get outside all year round, either in the local park or splashing in the river in Busby Glen or in the garden to inspire healthy, active and confident kids.” You can follow Adventures in East Ren on Medium at: medium. com/@EastRenPlay, as well as on Instagram @east_ren_play, Twitter @east_ren_play and Facebook @eastrenplay.

HIGH FIVE FOR SCHOOLS

CHURCHES JOIN RICE PROJECT More than 800 churches, fair trade groups, schools and community groups have taken up the challenge to date. Netherlee Parish Church has been involved since 2010. This year, Stamperland Church, now linked to Netherlee, also took up the task.

Three secondary schools in our local communities took top five places in a Scottish league table of state schools for 2019. St Ninian’s High School came third in the top 50 schools list, which is compiled by The Herald newspaper. Mearns High school and Williamwood High School scored fourth and fifth places. The list is defined by the percentage of pupils that leave school with five or more Highers, among other factors. St Ninian’s and Mearns High school scored 75 per cent, while Williamwood High School scored 73 per cent. Other schools in East Renfrewshire in the top 50 include Woodfarm High, Eastwood High and St Luke’s High.

The minister for both parishes, Rev Scott Blythe said: “There has been a terrific response to this challenge from both Netherlee and Stamperland churches.

Rev Scott Blythe with Sheena Wuthmann, who first suggested the Rice Challenge idea in 2010

Members of two local churches have taken up a challenge to raise funds to support an important education initiative in Africa. Netherlee Parish Church and Stamperland Church joined the 90kg Rice Challenge during the period of Lent. The aim was to sell as much rice as possible to raise money to enable the support of secondary school education in Malawi. The weight of 90kg is significant because this is the amount of rice

a farmer in Malawi has to sell to pay for a year of secondary school attendance per child. The Rice Challenge was developed by Just Trading Scotland [JTS], whose fundamental role is providing smallholder farmers and producers in developing countries with a market for their produce.

“It is particularly appropriate that we should be buying rice from Malawi at this time with the country having suffered so badly from the impact of hurricane Idai.” To date they have sold more than 540kgs of rice, sending six children to school. This year, with the addition of a second local church, the rice sold even faster. A spokesperson from JTS said: “Without all our customers’ support, JTS could not continue the amazing work we do at home and abroad and for that we are thankful.” Find out more at www.jts. co.uk/90kg-rice-challenge

NEW LORD-LIEUTENANT Colonel Peter Thomas McCarthy, 65, has been appointed the new Lord-Lieutenant of Renfrewshire, following Guy Clark’s retirement. On March 28, Colonel McCarthy took over the role of Queen’s representative, covering East Renfrewshire, Renfrewshire and Inverclyde. He was previously made a Deputy Lieutenant in 2011 and promoted to Vice LordLieutenant in 2016. Colonel McCarthy's foremost duty is to uphold the dignity of the Crown. He is responsible for arrangements for Royal visits to the area. He said: “It is an absolute honour to take on the role of Lord-Lieutenant of Renfrewshire. I wish to pay tribute to my predecessor, Guy Clark, who has carried out his duties with such distinction over the past 12 years. “I very much look forward to meeting the wide and

varied groups and residents from across the whole area as I attend events and ceremonies in the months and years ahead.” Colonel McCarthy served for 30 years in the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME), attaining the senior Army officer rank of colonel before retiring from the forces in 2004. He then worked as Operations Director with the British Red Cross in Glasgow, subsequently taking on a part-time role in 2011 to support operations in the UK and abroad, before retiring in 2015. He is particularly interested in the voluntary sector. He chairs an external consultative group providing advice on the Trades House of Glasgow programme to offer support for children in kinship care; he is patron of a local Army Cadet detachment; he is vice president of the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers Association in Scotland, and actively cares for Scotland’s veterans. Colonel McCarthy has been married for 37 years to Jean and they have three sons.

all ages, just as our term time class programme does.

Local residents are welcome to attend a meeting of Crookfur, Greenfarm & Mearns Village Community Council.

BBC’s Get Creative Festival runs this month, shining a light on all the great cultural activities available and encouraging participation.

The meeting takes place at Dunterlie Resource Centre, Stewart Street, Barrhead, from 7pm.

The huge national celebration of creativity, which runs from 11th-19th May, sees hundreds of organisations and community groups putting on events to help you get creative.

A community council is a voluntary organisation set up by statute by the Local Authority and run by local residents to act on behalf of its area. As the most local tier of elected representation, community councils play an important role in local democracy. For further information email: cgmvcommunitycouncil@gmail.com

participants will meet at Eastwood House and head outdoors to create a landscape masterpiece.

“The events are a great way of trying something new, finding a new hobby or just having some fun.”

A special day of free workshops and events will take place at Eastwood House on Saturday 18th May, including Photography in the Park, Watercolour and Jewellery Workshops and Physical Theatre.

Anthony McReavy from East Renfrewshire Culture and Leisure said: “We are delighted to host some fantastic, free sessions as part of the Get Creative festival and we would love to see participants getting involved, being creative and having lots of fun at the same time.

Get Creative had more than 1,400 events across the UK during the 2018 festival and hope to attract more participants this year to celebrate and showcase creativity in the community. Spaces on the workshops are limited and must be booked in advance.

There will also be a Painting in the Park session, where

A local choir is looking forward to celebrating a milestone anniversary in 2019 with a special gala concert this month.

The repertoire is mainly classical music, although they also enjoy performing other types of music. Anne added: “We are a friendly group and enjoy get-togethers and pub quiz nights when we are not singing. We also organise open nights in the community for prospective new members.

Eastwood Choral Society will mark its 35th year with the concert at St Margaret’s Scottish Episcopal Church in Newlands on Sunday 19th May at 3pm. The choir will be joined by a 12-piece orchestra and two wellestablished young opera singers. Anne Brooks, the choir’s treasurer, said: “We are presenting an operatic repertoire including many wellknown pieces from composers such as Verdi, Gluck and Purcell. “We are very excited about this event and hope many people will be able to join us on the day.

“New members are made very welcome and tenors are especially sought after.

Eastwood Choral Society was formed in 1984 through the merging of several church choirs from the Eastwood area. The first performance was a “Messiah for All.

Tickets for the concert, including refreshments afterwards, are priced at ÂŁ12 for adults and ÂŁ6 for children. They will be available on the door, they can be purchased from a choir member or by emailing: gillatecs@gmail.com

BOOK STARS AT LOCAL STORE

What's Up Doc? with Dr Nick Dunn

This month: GOOD GRIEF…

Two big names in the world of fiction will be at a local bookshop this month. Chris Brookmyre and Mark Billingham are the guests at Waterstones in Newton Mearns on May 9 from 7pm to 8pm. Brookmyre was born in Glasgow and raised in Barrhead. He is the author of dozens of books. At the book store event he will be discussing his new novel, Fallen Angel, which tells the story of one family, two holidays and a devastating secret.

Sarah thinks of herself as a normal single mum. But the truth is, she needs something new and thrilling. Meanwhile, DI Tom Thorne is investigating a woman's suicide, convinced she was driven to do it by a man who preys on vulnerable women. This is a man who is about to change Sarah's life…

It has been described by a critic as “gloriously dark and deliciously twisty”.

Billingham is a talented British crime author, who was born in Birmingham and worked as a TV writer and stand-up comedian before publishing his first novel Sleepyhead in 2001.

Meanwhile, Billingham will be chatting about his new novel, Their Little Secret. The main character

at the person who has gone or others, and bargaining can take the form of “what if” questions in our minds. People are often depressed for a period of time after a loss, and this is normal. It can come with hopelessness and can last for months, but finally acceptance can allow people to get back to some normality, and while not replacing what has been lost, helps people rebuild their lives.

There are five stages of grief. When this is explained, it can help reassure that the reaction is normal, and time may be all that is required. These stages are Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression and Acceptance. Often people are initially numb and struggle to accept what has happened. This can act as a bit of a “shock-absorber”. Anger may be directed either

Lo- ss is something we all have to face at some point, so understanding the normal reactions to this can help to make sense of emotions at difficult times!

This month: CHILDREN’S HEARING… In the year 2017 –2018 there were 13,240 children referred to the Scottish Children’s Reporter Administration (SCRA). They are the body responsible for Children’ Reporters and the Hearing, also commonly referred to as the panel, system. The main function of the Children’s Reporter is to receive referrals from others who may have concerns regarding a child or young person. The Reporter must then consider whether there is a requirement for some form of compulsory intervention and, if so, draft the grounds for referral. The Reporter may gather information from social work, school, health care providers or other relevant bodies. A hearing will then take place to allow the parents, child and any relevant persons to decide whether

they accept or deny the grounds. In the event the grounds are denied or, as is quite common, the child is too young to understand, then the grounds are referred to the local sheriff court for determination. The Reporter is responsible for progressing the court hearings on behalf of the SCRA. The grounds will either be determined to be established or not. If they are not, then that is the end of the process. In the event grounds are established then the matter is returned to the SCRA Hearing system for the next step in the process. This process can have huge significant legal consequences and it is therefore essential that people are aware that they are entitled to seek legal advice and have a representative at these hearings. Legal Aid may also be available.

CHILDREN ENJOY EASTER EGGS GIFT A local church was delighted to be presented with 200 Easter eggs to be handed out to children.

JOKES ALL ROUND A 10-year-old budding comedian had his joke told at a Glasgow International Comedy Festival event, after winning a comedy competition. Alasdair Logan entered the competition during a visit to his local library and scooped a family pass to see kids' comedian and author James Campbell. Alasdair's joke was chosen from over 120 competition entries from eight local primary schools and five libraries from across East Renfrewshire.

Broom Parish Church in Newton Mearns was gifted the chocolate eggs by the nearby Co-op Food store. The Rev James Boag and church secretary Aileen Arnott accepted the eggs from Co-op managers Ricky and Paul. The eggs were then given to children of church members during a special Easteringle Service. The Easteringle Service was held at Broom in April. It was a filled service with many people from Broom and the

James also gave Alasdair, of Giffnock, a signed copy of his book, The Funny Life of Pets, and posed for a picture with Alasdair (pictured right) and his friend, Joseph O'Donnell from Netherlee.

It was wonderful to be able to treat them to the Easter eggs as well and we are very grateful to the Co-op for there generous donation. “Easter is a joyful time and sharing together is at the heart of the gospel of Christ. Jennifer McMillan, the owner of the Glasgow dance school, said: “TV’s Strictly Come Dancing has made dancing popular again and there is a greater demand for classes for newcomers, especially adults.

“In addition, no partners are required, which makes the class great for anyone.” Dancing has some great benefits, such as being a fun way to keep fit and active. The dance sessions are also a great place to meet new friends in an informal and relaxed setting. The beginners’s ballroom and Latin dance class, which costs £8 per person, will continue throughout summer if enough people attend. Dance2Inspire is one of Scotland’s leading dance schools and provides a wide range of dance tuition for all levels and abilities, from social dance classes to competitive dancing, as well as wedding dance lessons, kids classes and one-to-one tuition.

“Our sessions are for anyone who has ever thought about learning how to dance. “The beginners’ class is the place to learn the basics of the waltz, tango, quickstep, cha cha cha, rumba, samba and jive.

To find out more see www.dance2inspire. co.uk or simply turn up on a Thursday evening at Newton Mearns Parish Church.

PARK’S NEW LIFE-SAVER SINGING FOR that we felt we could make a difference.”

Junior parkrun takes place every Sunday at 9.30am. It offers children aged four to 14 the chance to run a timed distance of 2km. The event is free. Pauline Ryan, a volunteer with Rouken Glen Junior Parkrun, said: “All of the volunteers involved in Rouken Glen Junior parkrun are delighted to have the defibrillator to increase the safety of the people we bring to the park every Sunday morning, including our young participants and their families.

Rouken Glen Vets have installed a public defibrillator at the Vetinary Surgery in partnership with Rouken Glen Junior parkrun

A joint project between a veterinary practice and a local parkrun has culminated in the installation of public defibrillator. Rouken Glen Vets partnered with Rouken Glen Junior parkrun to raise the funds for the device, which can offer life-saving treatment for a person suffering a cardiac arrest. The defibrillator is located at the vets, at East Lodge, Rouken Glen Road. The practice is open Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 7pm, Saturday, 9am to 4pm and Sunday, 9am to 1pm.

“It’s a double bonus that it will be available to other park users during the rest of the week.

Sara Black, director at Rouken Glen Vets, said: “A defibrillator is a potential lifesaver and we wanted to see one in place in the popular park for public use. “We were very happy to join with Junior parkrun on this project and we donated £600 towards the cost of the device. It is good for local businesses to give something back to the community and this is one way

“We would like to thank all those who contributed to its purchase, including the vets surgery, Netherlee Church of Scotland and the parkrunning community.” The vetinary surgery is now keen to raise funds to enable the defibrillator to be installed in a case outdoors so that is available 24/7. KIDS LOVE OUTDOORS PLAY An outdoors playgroup plans to add more sessions to its programme this summer due to popular demand.

with Tasnim Rehman This month:

Our role is to help share knowledge and to be able to recognise those at risk so that carers and families can take action.

PREVENTING MALNUTRITION

Three years ago, Off Grid started as an After School Club, picking up children from local primary schools, as well as offering a Saturday Club.

Within the last year, it has grown again to include a Playgroup for two year old children – and now there are plans to add more sessions. The founder and owner, Jacqui Frame, said: "We are delighted with the success of the play group in the short time that we have been open. “The children love playing outdoors in all weathers, especially in the rain so that they can jump in puddles.”

STAY NOURISHED’ – HEALTHY EATING IN OLDER AGE – PART 3

How can you help tackle malnutrition?

Off Grid Community, based in Clarkston, was set up with the aims of bringing the community together and reconnecting children to outdoors play.

Shortly after, it launched Parent and Toddler sessions and birthday parties.

Senior Savvy

Aidans Brae hosts the urban outdoor groups and may also be used responsibly by the public, when not in use. Children are encouraged to play freely but may be guided to take part in a variety of woodlandinspired crafts and pursuits. The leaders are qualified staff as well as parent volunteers. 1 Plan meals according to changing food choices and tastes.

7 Avoid rushing or coercing someone to eat – gentle persuasion is better.

2 Keep mealtimes interesting – aromas stimulate appetite, encourage loved ones to get involved whilst cooking or preparing.

8 Avoid calorie-free or low-fat products unless advised by a doctor.

3 Dine in comfort, remove distractions & create a nice atmosphere. 4 Think about portion sizes if appetites reduce – finger foods can replace traditional meals if required. 5 Encourage healthy snacks and drinks regularly. 6 Help with shopping lists or shopping trips.

9 Is there any physical or financial support with preparing meals? 10 Avoid using the term ‘malnutrition’, ‘Keeping well’ is less frightening. 11 Confront the myth – Weight loss is NOT a normal part of the ageing process. 12 Ensure family and friends are up to date with the changes in food choices and preferences.

JOIN A LOCAL SPRING CLEAN

A local action group is planning to participate in a Keep Scotland Beautiful annual Spring Clean campaign this month. Crookfur Litter Group has answered the call of environmental charity, Keep Scotland Beautiful, in partnership with community retailer Scotmid Co-operative, for communities to remove litter from their local area. It is part of the wider Clean Up Scotland campaign that has existed since 2012. Shirley MacGillivray, Scotmid deputy secretary, said: “We believe the initiative matches our

core values and principles as a responsible community retailer.” To take part in the Crookfur Litter Group litter pick-up simply turn up at St Cadoc’s Primary School in Newton Mearns on May 12 at 2pm. Participants should be appropriately dressed and bring with them gardening gloves and a water bottle. East Renfrewshire Council will supply the litter pickers and bags.

Local residents, businesses, schools and community groups can also organise their own clean up events to remove rubbish from streets, parks and public areas. Derek Robertson, chief executive of Keep Scotland Beautiful, said: “We hope that as many people as possible will take part in this year’s campaign and help to make 2019 the most successful Spring Clean campaign to date.” Last year, more than 30,000 people across Scotland participated

in the Spring Clean Campaign and removed more than 300 tonnes of litter, the equivalent weight of 50 elephants. Neil Bibby MSP said: “I’m proud of the actions of local residents from Eastwood who are participating in the annual Spring Clean Campaign. I hope that it is a fantastic success.” Crookfur event contact is sjmclaughlin08@gmail.com or you can organise you own Clean Up via www.keepscotlandbeautiful. org/cleanupscotland.
