GREENBANK ROOTS OF GROWTH THEATRE SHOW Manager at Greenbank, said: “Expertise is not necessary for these roles because we will offer training. There are many opportunities to learn skills, meet new people and enjoy working in a beautiful place. It’s a good time to join the team as there are lots of exciting developments at the garden.

The NTS is looking to develop partnerships with local groups to utilise Greenbank House's historic walled garden

An historic walled garden in Clarkston is looking for new partnerships and volunteers as the attraction looks towards a busier future. Greenbank Garden, which is cared for by the National Trust for Scotland (NTS), is described as an urban oasis close to a Glasgow suburb. Greenbank House was built for Robert Allason, a tobacco merchant and slave trader, in the 1760s, when Glasgow was the second city of the British Empire. The walled garden was created at the same time and both are surrounded by tall swaying beeches. After the American Wars of Independence, Allason went

bankrupt and lost the house and estate. In the 21st century, the NTS garden is planning to develop its offering in various ways, including partnerships with local groups. This could be for regular meetings for craft, theatre, drama or parents & toddlers’ groups. The NTS property is also looking for volunteers, such as helpers in the garden or for events, and guides for the house. Julie Gilliland, Visitor Services

Another initiative, led by the regional garden & landscape manager, is to develop a horticultural therapy project. Julie added: If anyone works in this field, Greenbank would love to hear from you to discuss possibilities. Greenbank also has a newly refurbished cafÊ and this will stay open over the winter. There is currently free access to a pretty woodland, while membership of the NTS is encouraged to make full use of the attraction. Contact: jgilliland@nts.org.uk. There will be three shows each day at 11am, 1pm and 3pm. Tickets from GTP on 07518 201756 or tickets-gtp@hotmail.co.uk.

A Clarkston musical company is staging “everyone’s favouriteâ€? pantomime this month. Eros Musical Society will perform Cinderella from Tuesday to Saturday, November 20 to 24, at East Kilbride Village Theatre. Eros president Ian McAulay said “Although our company has been in existence for more than 50 years, this is only the second time we have played in East Kilbride Village theatre. “We had a fantastic first time with our pantomime Snow White and Seven Dwarfs there last year.â€? Eros’s version of Cinderella has again been penned for the society by the acclaimed George Douglas, who has been responsible for most of the pantomimes shown in the King’s Theatre in Glasgow in recent years.

Ian said: “The show promises lots of fun, laughter, great costumes and singalong tunes.â€? Ticket prices include a few deals: A booking for a group of 10 or more for any performance costs ÂŁ10 per ticket; on a Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, a family ticket (two adults, two children or other combination) is ÂŁ30; and on a Friday, Saturday matinee and Saturday evening a family ticket is ÂŁ36. Single tickets are ÂŁ12 on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and ÂŁ13 on a Friday and Saturday. Book through 07735 393359 or at the Village Theatre box office on 01355 261000. ORIGINAL SHOW SPROUTS UP Eastwood Park Theatre is rounding off its 45th anniversary with original Christmas show, Jack and the Beanstalk II: Return of the Farmer. The Christmas show has been penned by the writer of many successful festive shows for the Citizen’s Theatre and produced by Scottish theatre company Showroom.

Producer Callum Smith, originally from Clarkston, who has worked for a variety of the UK’s leading theatres said: “This is a Christmas show for all ages – a magical, wacky and hilarious twist on a traditional pantomime, personalised for Eastwood Park Theatre starring top Scottish acting talent.”

Tickets are on sale now for Jack and the Beanstalk II: Return of the Farmer, brought by four renowned Scottish theatre talents – written and composed by Andy McGregor, directed by Julie Brown, designed by Claire Halleran and produced by Callum Smith of Showroom. The unique Christmas show is a twist on the traditional tale, centring on Jack McJack, who is now living a life of fame, fortune and fanciness. He owns Giffnock’s most successful supermarket and everything is going his way – until the trickster of a farmer who gave him his magic beans returns and demands his share of the profits.

The show will take centre stage at Eastwood Park Theatre from December 11-30, with dedicated British Sign Language Interpreted (December 21 at 7.30pm) and “relaxed” (December 15 at 1pm) performances for audience members with Additional Support Needs.

In the hilarious new tale he recalls the story of his heroic trip to the top of the beanstalk, before facing the farmer in an epic showdown.

Conservatory too cold in the winter and too hot in the summer...

We have an affordable solution

Tickets are priced at just £11 standard, £8 for concessions and a family of four can catch the show for £35. The show also qualifies for the group discount – buy ten tickets and one person can go free: www. eastwoodparktheatre.co.uk/ boxoffice.

ADVICE COULD BE CRITICAL He says: “Many people do not want to think about worst case scenarios but an illness can come out of the blue. I was only 31 when the brain tumour was discovered, for example.

Greg Jenkins was diagnosed with a brain tumour at 31 and his advice could help people finding themselves in a similar position

A cancer survivor believes his experience can help others to be better prepared for coping with the disease, should the worst happen. Greg Jenkins, an advisor with SM Financial Advice in Newton Mearns, was diagnosed with a potentially devastating brain tumour at the age of 31. He was fortunate that doctors were able to remove most of the tumour but he still lives with the cancer to this day. Greg, now 40, is married with a young child. He says: “It was a complete shock to be told I had cancer; even the word sounds intimidating and scary. My world suddenly changed and I was unable to work because of the disease and the treatments.

“But I was fortunate because I had critical illness cover. This looked after my financial concerns when I most needed it, including paying off my mortgage. I received a regular income from my income protection plan until I was ready to go back to work.” Now Greg, who was keen to return to work as quickly as he could, uses his experiences to help his customers to ensure they are financially protected should they become ill.

“When you are ill, especially with something as critical as cancer, you do not want to be worrying about anything other than getting well again. Financial pressures, such as how to pay the mortgage and how to look after your partner and family while you’re not working, can play very heavy on someone’s mind if they are suddenly unable to work. “I help people all over Scotland to look at how they can be financially protected to suit their own circumstances. My work is very rewarding and it feels especially poignant given what I have experienced. I have been lucky both to be a cancer survivor, albeit with a lifetime of treatment, and to be financially secure because of plans put in place just in case.” To find out more about Greg’s work see smfinancialadvice.co.uk.

HERITAGE GROUP AWARDED GRANT Some 50 local volunteers, including many young people, will be involved in interviewing 30 respondents who lived in or near Patterton during the war and afterwards through years of rationing and austerity.

Rachel Kelly, Project Coordinator of The Lost Stratchlyde Heritage Group

Volunteers will work with Dr Sue Morrison, a professional oral historian, to produce audio clips from the history archive and work with a filmmaker to record interviews and create short videos.

A heritage group is delighted to have been awarded a National Lottery grant of more than £50,000 for an exciting new project. The Lost Strathclyde Heritage Group has received £52,800 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) towards an initiative entitled: “Patterton WWII: A POW Camp and its Neighbours.” The project focuses on Camp 660, a World War II prisoner

Iris Larkins, chairperson of the project, said: “We are thrilled to have received this support thanks to National Lottery players and we are confident the project will promote and instil pride in this important aspect of East Renfrewshire’s wartime heritage.”

of war camp and the nearby East Renfrewshire village of Patterton.

Lucy Casot, Head of HLF Scotland, said: “Thanks to National Lottery players, HLF is able to help communities learn about and take pride in their local heritage as well as training in new skills.

The intergenerational oral history project will capture the history of the camp and its impact on the local people between 1939 and the late 1950s.

“Learning about history can be rewarding, fascinating and fun, and ‘Patterton WWII: A POW Camp and its Neighbours’ is no exception.”

£23M BOOST FOR NURSERIES

What's Up Doc? with Dr Nick Dunn

This month: HOT AND BOTHERED...?

East Renfrewshire Council has approved plans to build five new nurseries in the area. The £23 million proposals include creating a new centre in Overlee Park, a replacement for Glenwood Family Centre nearby, and two new buildings within the grounds of Busby and Eaglesham primary schools. It is hoped that the facilities will be open by August 2020. Other existing nurseries will also be developed as part of the expansion plan, with a further £3.3 million being invested to create a new 60 place nursery class at Cross Arthurlie Primary, plus improved facilities at Hazeldene Family centre, Carolside Nursery Class and Braidbar Nursery Class.

Councillor Paul O’Kane, Convener for Education and Equalities, said: “It is extremely exciting to have reached this milestone in our ambitious early years expansion plan. “The sites of the proposed new family centres were carefully chosen as we aim to provide green and natural environments for our children so they have the best opportunities for quality exploration and learning experiences indoors and out. “By offering parents various options of how to utilise their free childcare allocations, the facilities will provide more flexibility and choice which I’m sure will be welcomed by all.”

These include hot flushes, night sweats, sleep problems, reduced libido, headaches, mood changes or anxiety, palpitations, joint stiffness, recurrent urine infections or pelvic discomfort, and longer term can increase risk of fractures due to osteoporosis.

Your GP can discuss this with you, and help includes Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT), Antidepressants, Clonidine (a drug which helps with flushes). Certain foods which are high in phytooestrogens can help and important lifestyle changes such as reducing alcohol intake, increasing exercise and stopping smoking can also go a long way in reducing symptoms.

November 2018 | Getting Ready for Christmas

Getting Ready for Take your current day-to-day schedule and imagine adding Christmas shopping, Christmas parties, and holiday travel all at once. You’ll thank yourself come mid-December if you use the extra time you have now to get ready for Christmas. Here are a few tips to help you do that.

Set and Fund your Budget Before you do any Christmas shopping, you need to determine how much you can afford. From there, decide who to include and exclude from your list. To make it easy, try setting a per-person budget. There is a growing segment

memorable gifts you can give. Why? Because the recipient knows that you've invested a significant amount of your time. By brainstorming homemade ideas now, you're more likely to have the time necessary to complete the project.

Organise your Christmas Lists

of people that simply put all their gifts on their credit cards and then spend the rest of the following year trying to get catch up on their payments.

Start Making Homemade Gifts Homemade and personalised Christmas gifts are the most

m t s i r h C Many families do lists, and many do not, so if you do ask people for their lists, go ahead and contact them now. Inevitably, there is going to be one person who takes their time getting a list to you. That's less likely to be frustrating if you have an early start.

Start Watching for Sale Items Keep an eye on TV and printed adverts for shop sales, deals and vouchers. If you find an item on your list, get it while it's on sale. One personal goal is to have all our Christmas shopping done by the last day of November. That way you don't have to fight against the last-minute buying crowds on Christmas Eve.

that be a relief? Go ahead and set a target goal of when you'd like to finish all your cards. Then create some type of plan to be done by that date. You could either mark off a morning on your calendar or do a little bit at a time.

Fill Up the Freezer There are a lot of great meals that you can freeze ahead of time so you have food available for those busy times. Prepare double or triple portions of some of your recipes. Serve a single portion, and freeze

the extra portions. Another option is to block out a full cooking day where you make as many meals as possible.

Royal Mail Delivery Deadlines Sending out Christmas cards and presents to your friends and family around the world can always be a bit stressful – due to how manic the post office becomes over the festive season. To dodge those nightmare queues at Christmas, buy your stamps now. The same goes with sending presents and parcels.

Let friends and family know that their presents will be arriving early, and to put them away for Christmas morning. Check the Royal Mail delivery times and start preparing and get everything out before the rush.

Rangers will be patrolling to make sure no fireworks are let off nearby. There will also be a ranger-led walk on the 5th, too. For more information, call 0141 614 0962.

Either the mother or father of the child can register the birth if the parents are married. In the event the natural parents are not married, then the parents would most commonly attend the Registrar’s office together for both names to appear on the birth certificate. The mother can also register the birth alone. However, the father would require the mother’s consent in order to be able to register the child without the mother being present. As of 1st September 2009, in circumstances where a woman

has a child by fertility treatment or donor insemination, and she is in a civil partnership or marriage at the time of the treatment, either woman can register the birth on her own. If the women were in a cohabiting relationship but not a civil partnership or married, the mother and her partner are able to register the child’s birth jointly. Being registered on the birth certificate will provide both parents with full parental rights and responsibilities in relation to the child. The registrar in your local area should be able to assist with any further questions you might have regarding registration.

DIRECT ACCESS, HIGH QUALITY CARE FOR BABIES & CHILDREN Do you want the peace of mind to be able to directly access a paediatrician for advice or treatment whenever there is an issue with your baby or child? Or perhaps you just need support from a specialist children’s dietitian with your baby’s feeding issues?

MERAS Children’s Healthcare is the only private children’s clinic in Scotland that is licensed and registered to provide care for patients aged 0-16 years in the independent sector. We are a community centred service, aiming to improve the standard of health and wellbeing of babies and children in Scotland. We especially welcome those who do not have access to NHS services and, consequently, have nowhere else to turn for support. The clinical service is led by a Consultant Specialist Paediatrician and provides co-ordinated care and access

to highly specialised children’s physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, audiology, child psychology, nutrition and dietetics. To ensure we maintain a high standard of care, we only accept a limited number of patients. Whenever spare capacity becomes available (e.g. families move home, out of our catchment area), we open the service to accept new enrolments We are therefore currently accepting a limited number of new patients, on a first come first served basis.

We provide a wide range of services including (but not limited to):

Allergy service Child development Medical consultations Immunisations (including those vaccines not routinely available in the NHS) • Feeding and nutrition (including a tongue tie service, for babies who are breastfeeding) • Parental advisory helpline via video linkup to a child health professional such as a Consultant Paediatrician, from the comfort of your own home • Parental training workshops (recognition of the sick child, baby and child life support, parenting skills and training to enhance child development) • • • •

To register your child or simply to find out more, please email admin@merashealthcare.com with your name and phone number and one of the clinic administration team will be happy to contact you to help support your request or enquiry.

Giffnock businesses have renewed the BID initiative for a further five years

Businesses in Giffnock have voted to renew the Business Improvement District initiative for another five years. The aim of the group, called Giffnock Village, which was Scotland’s 20th BID when it was created, is to deliver projects and services that will improve the trading environment of the area for the benefit of businesses, customers and visitors. Through the consultation, the key priorities for Giffnock for the next five years were shown to be: Increasing footfall and repeated spending in the area; improving the look and feel of the area; improved marketing; and creating more of a sense of community and enhancing local relationships.

Commenting on the renewal, BID Chair Giann Celino, said: “I’ve been involved in business in Giffnock for 20 years and have been Chair of Giffnock Village throughout its first term. “I am personally delighted that the majority of fellow Giffnock businesses have voted to continue the BID, so that we can continue to work together to make Giffnock a great place for our customers and our businesses. “We have achieved so much already but there is plenty more to be done.”

You or a loved one have worked a lifetime expecting to be able to enjoy your late adult life with little or no unexpected events in later years. The fact is that falls are a real threat to the health of older adults and can seriously reduce their ability to remain independent at home. Each year millions of older people – those 65 and older – fall. More than one in four fall each year but less than half tell their doctor. Falling once… doubles your chances of falling again.

Keep ourselves and loved ones safe at home • Secure your rugs so they are not a trip hazard. • Handrails on both sides of the stairwell. • Install handrails in the bathroom. • Ensure entryways, stairs and paths are well lit.

Prevention

• Non-skid bathroom mats are a must.

1 Talk to your doctor to evaluate your risk and what you can do.

• Medical alert systems allow easy call for help in emergencies.

AN EVENING WITH THE FLYING SCOTSMAN Cycling legend Graeme Obree will be attending a special screening of 'The Flying Scotsman', a film about his life

DELI RAISES £1300 FOR HOSPICE A Giffnock deli has donated more than £1300 to Scotland’s oldest and largest hospice. The coffee morning at Pane e Vino last month was arranged by staff in aid of St Margaret of Scotland Hospice.

Legendary record-breaking cyclist Graeme Obree will be the guest of honour at a special screening of the film about his amazing life.

Natalia Piankowska, from the deli, said: “A customer, who works for the hospice, asked us to organise the event. It was a first time for us and it was a great success.”

The Flying Scotsman will be shown at Eastwood Park Theatre on Thursday November 8 at 6pm. Following the film, Graham will be part of a Q&A session.

He has also written a training manual, The Obree Way, and an autobiography, The Flying Scotsman, which inspired the film. The film stars big names such as Jonny Lee Miller.

Customers were treated to coffee, sandwiches and cakes with profits from the till being added to the final total of £1323. A hamper of Italian goodies was also raffled.

The former professional cyclist, turned author and commentator, became famous on July 17, 1993, when he broke the UCI World Hour Record on the bike he hand-built. His record was broken a week later but Graham went on to regain the record and to become the UCI world pursuit champion, twice.

Standard tickets cost £15 and concession entry is priced at £13. This event is recommended for those aged 15 and over.

Professor Leo Martin MBE, chairman of the Clydebankbased hospice, thanked the deli for their support.
