ASRA CRAFTS POPPIES FOR FUNDS A former pupil at a Clarkston secondary has crocheted hundreds of poppies to support the school’s fundraising efforts.
Asra Ahmed, from Clarkston, has crocheted hundreds of poppies to help the school's fundraising efforts. Asra also embroidered a canvas of the school in 2018
She is currently in third year of studying Orthoptics at Glasgow Caledonian University and also works part time as a science and maths tutor.
Asra Ahmed, 21, has created 100 poppies for Williamwood High School’s Armistice event this month. Last year, she also donated 100 poppies to mark the centenary anniversary of World War I at the school. She also embroidered a canvas of the school in 2018 and, this year, Asra has made another canvas with a World War I memorial theme to help raise funds for Poppy Scotland.
Asra started hand-crafting items at a young age and has taught herself many skills, including sewing, knitting, candle decorating and crocheting, which she took up at school.
to school events and to fundraise.”
Asra, who left the school in 2016, said: “I am very fond of Williamwood High School. Last year marked a century since World War I and I crocheted and donated exactly 100 poppies to help with my school’s fundraiser.
Asra was very involved in fundraising activities while attending the Clarkston school and used her crafting talents to create crocheted goods and handmade items, including a handmade banner for her year’s graduation ceremony.
“My ambition is to make a positive contribution to the community and to use my creativity to enhance the school’s objectives, to contribute
She said: “I always hand made items for the school for different occasions, making things for my lead school charity group, Mary’s Meals, gifts for the elderly for
Asra added: “As much as my course keeps me busy, I like to spare some time and help young people with their studies, particularly for maths and science, as well as do some crafts.”
the school’s Burns’ Lunch and donations for the Classrooms for Malawi team. “Despite leaving almost three years ago, I continue to contribute to the school, whether that is by crocheting poppies for Remembrance Day or helping the Parent Teachers’ Association with their donations. My hope is to be as inspiring as the school has been for me.”
Williamwood publicly thanked Asra for her “beautiful handmade poppies” and announced that they have displayed her “skillful and intricate” canvas of the school in one of their interview rooms. To see more of Asra’s work visit: facebook.com/asras.crafts.

The second I Love Clarkston Community Awards is inviting nominations for local unsung heroes who deserve recognition. The awards are organised by I Love Clarkston Business Improvement District (BID) with nominations launched this month in seven categories: Young Person of the Year, Inspirational Leader, Group of the Year, Customer Service Star, Independent Business of the Year, National Business of the Year and the top prize, the Community Champion 2020.
An eighth award will be The I Love Clarkston Award, which will be given to a winner chosen by the I Love Clarkston management team on the night of the awards. The 2020 awards ceremony will be held on February 28. Last year’s inaugural ILC Community Awards were greatly received and saw eight gongs presented to community members, groups and businesses in Clarkston.
Andy Dunlop, the manager at Clarkston Business Improvement District, said: “Last year we ran the Community Awards for the first time and it was a huge success. It sold out and we gave out eight community awards. “We are looking forward to another successful year for the awards. Local people can make their nominations on-line and there will be a nominations stall at the Very Merry Clarkston Christmas event on November 16. ANNE’S 10K CHARITY BID
ADVERTISE
HERE
FROM AS LITTLE AS
£38
The large group of runners, organised by Anne McNeill, raised over £7500 for charity
A mum from Newton Mearns was joined by 31 friends and family to run a race in aid of a charity that is close to her heart. Anne McNeill was the driving force for the all-female group, which has raised £7530 for Action for Pulmonary Fibrosis after her dad Niall McHugh died. Anne’s mum, Marie McHugh, of Clarkston, and her aunt, Anne Finn, of nearby King’s Park, were among the fund-raising runners who took part in the Great Scottish Run 10k in September. Anne said: “It was important to me, my family and friends to raise funds and awareness of the lung disease, which contributed to my dad’s death in December 2017.”
Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis is an incurable and devastating lung disease. Action for Pulmonary Fibrosis support patients and help to finance research into effective treatments. The runners also included 23 mums from Newton Mearns, three more women from Clarkston, one from Newlands, another from Milngavie and two of Anne’s cousins from Ireland. Coco hairdressers in Clarkston donated money from their clients and Rhythm Time Glasgow South organised a raffle to help boost the funds.
ADVERTORIAL
Has Your Double Glazing Steamed Up?
Anne said: “We chose the Great Scottish Run due to the reputation of the event and because most of us live nearby. It also took place during Pulmonary Fibrosis Awareness Month. It was the first time many of us had done a 10k, including me. “I had watched my dad die of his lungs failing so we all wanted to challenge ourselves and use our lungs to our max. My friends and family were very supportive in doing this with me. “I felt like I had a great community spirit supporting me and I am delighted by the total we have raised for the charity.” See www.actionpulmonary fibrosis.org.

CLARKSTON CHRISTMAS PLAN
The biggest free event to be staged in the region takes place in Clarkston this month – and it gets the festive season off to a merry start. It’s hoped “A Very, Merry, Clarkston Christmas”, which will be held on November 16, will attract more than last year’s bumper 12,000 people. The one-day winter event will bring a huge Christmas market to the area with 50 local stallholders selling their products. As well as stalls, there will be a food and drink tent, funfair rides, Santa’s Express Train, grotto and live entertainment before a fireworks display. An addition to this year’s event is the arrival of new Christmas lights, which will be hung throughout the town. Last year’s Christmas extravaganza at Clarkston Hall and car park was

EVENT GOES LIBRARIES REWARD READERS WITH A BANG
to hear how much they enjoyed it. Our Reading Hackers have been a great support during the challenge. They helped younger children to choose titles, recommended books and also helped our library staff. “The space-themed sessions were great fun and our aspiring astronauts had a blast with our storytelling, sci-fi labs, space craft sessions and alien hunts.”
Families are invited to attend what is claimed to be the “largest and best” fireworks display on Glasgow’s southside. The annual GHA Rugby Club fireworks event takes place at the club grounds on Braidholm Road, Giffnock, on Tuesday November 5. The gates will open at 6pm and the fireworks will start from 7.15pm. The organisers also promise “music, food stalls and novelties”. Tickets are priced at £7 for adults and £5 for under 16s. Children aged under five are free. You can buy your tickets online to avoid the queues and also take advantage of a discounted family ticket for two adults and two or more children. See www.gharugby.co.uk.
A record number of schoolchildren in East Renfrewshire completed this year’s Reading Challenge through their local libraries. A total of 1100 young readers took part in this year’s scheme, an increase of 10 per cent compared to last year, and they read 6600 books. The challenge aims to develop children’s reading skills and enjoyment. This year’s theme was space, marking the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon landing. Those who completed the Reading Challenge were also
invited along to special ceremonies to acknowledge their efforts. Head of Libraries, Scott Simpson, attended a Clarkston ceremony to reward children with medals and certificates, as well as to thank the teen “Reading Hackers” who supported the younger children and library staff. Scott said: “We’re pleased that so many children joined in this year’s challenge and we’re even happier

Residents across East Renfrewshire were also given the chance to develop digital learning skills during October’s National Libraries’ Week, as the libraries celebrated the role of libraries in a digital world. Library sessions highlighted ways to become digitally involved, including Virtual Reality sessions, coding clubs, literacy and learning apps for children and tablet sessions for adults. PICK UP YOUR RACQUET AGAIN LEGION MEMBERS FINISH PROJECT
The Mearns Cross Memorial in 1983
A badminton club for over-60s players is keen to encourage new members to come along. The Racqueteers Badminton Club meet in Busby every Tuesday and Thursday from 10am to noon. The club is aimed at men and women aged 60 and over, who previously played badminton and would like to get back playing on a regular basis. Jean Neill, the club’s treasurer, said: “We hope to attract new members to our club and we are open to anyone over 60 who enjoys playing badminton and likes to keep fit. “The benefits include regular meet ups with likeminded people of a similar age and the chance to play a fun sport.”
The Memorial as it looks now
A local branch of the Royal British Legion Scotland is nearing the completion of a project to improve the site around a special memorial.
The Racqueteers club is part of Badminton Scotland and was founded some 20 years ago. The sessions take place between September and May.
The members of the Royal British Legion Newton Mearns have paid for tens of thousands of pounds of work at Mearns Cross and undertaken a lot of the renovations themselves, including planting flowers and installing a marble wall.
Jean added: “We operate a system where we only play doubles, which allows everyone to play more games. “We do not have any competitions but as such everyone enjoys winning.”
GET INTO YOUR LOFT & GET INTO THE FESTIVE SPIRIT
Remembrance Sunday on November 10 will be marked at the memorial with a parade, wreath laying and a minute’s silence observed at 11am.
“We are very happy with how the site now looks especially as we move towards Remembrance Day this year.
Jim, who had a role in the design of the improvements at the memorial site, added: “It is important that the memorial is accessible and in good condition so that people have a prominent place to remember their loved ones for many, many years to come.”
“We are also delighted that we have already had two ‘best kept’

NEW TEST FOR HEART DISEASE? What's Up Doc? with Dr Nick Dunn
This month: ALL BEING WELL…?
Barely a week goes by without some news about heart attacks and strokes or “good” and “bad” cholesterol. We worry about high cholesterol or ‘bad’ cholesterol because of the impact it has on cardiovascular risk. In other words, how much it affects the chances of having problems like a heart attack or stroke. Unfortunately, we in the West of Scotland top the leader board for these problems.
Park at Maryhill, taking part in a worldwide study to help assess the importance of Lp(a). A higher level of Lp(a) may be genetic but it may also be higher in people who have had a heart attack or a stroke or are at risk of one. 45,000 people will take part in this project by simply having a simple blood test. Anyone who has had a heart attack or a stroke within the last 10 years can participate.
Although cholesterol is important, it is not the whole story. What is the difference between Health and Well-being? As doctors we are concerned with keeping people as healthy as possible, but clearly this is not the whole story. Health in its simplest sense, is just about not being ill. Well-being is described as “feeling good and functioning well”. The New Economics Foundation, describes a more positive approach by encouraging people to live their best life by doing these five things: Connect – with family, friends, colleagues or neighbours – building connections provides stability in a fast-changing world; Take Notice – Use all your senses to appreciate what’s around you and take stock from time to
time to reflect on who or what is important to you; Keep learning – find new challenges and experiences – this keeps you young and builds confidence ; Be Active – Regular exercise lifts mood and reduces anxiety as well as staying fit – walking, running cycling, swimming or dancing, it doesn’t matter what; Give – Do something for others when you can, even something small – it will make you feel better, as well as those around you. As people, including GPs, are living busier lives, we could all benefit from paying attention to our well-being!

A personal trainer who ran 180 miles solo from Inverness to Glasgow has raised an astonishing £7061 for a charity close to her heart. Katie Hall, who lives in Busby and is originally from Dundonald in Ayrshire, took just five days to complete the challenge. It included 20,000ft of climbing, which is more than 4.5 times the height of the UK’s highest mountain Ben Nevis. She ran 12 to 15 hours each day following two long-distance trails, the Great Glen Way between Inverness and Fort William, and then the West Highland Way, from Fort William to Milngavie, just north of Glasgow. She was raising funds for Ayrshire Cancer Support Charity, which
provided invaluable care and understanding after her mum was diagnosed with breast cancer. Katie’s challenge saw her carrying all her own clothes and kit and wild camping every night. She said: “It was an epic journey. On paper, the stats speak for themselves, however all of that pales in comparison to the overwhelming support, camaraderie and love from everyone who was following my progress. “It didn't feel like a 'solo' effort; it was a team effort with so much kindness and encouragement

It turned out to be an aggressive and fastgrowing tumour. Katie said: “Mum was quickly and wonderfully treated by the NHS and consultants, with a lumpectomy in the October, followed by six weeks of radiotherapy at the Beatson over Christmas and into January. The festive madness begins in earnest accompanied by the usual bombardm on TV and special offers in stores. But even although we all know how frenetic it can become even the most experienced organisers of the perfect family Christmas can find themselves overwhelmed by what can seem a hugely complex and demanding task – and that at a time of year when the weather outside can be frightful (to coin a phrase). It’s all very well to talk about “planning”, but that rather takes the spontaneity out of things, relegating what should be a happy annual occasion to just another irksome chore. Possibly the best approach is to plan the absolutely unavoidable

basics first, leaving time for shopping and other preparations that could even be – dare to mention it – fun. Inevitably most of us will go online for a fair bit of the annual spend, but a look at what’s available on the doorstep (and at the advertisements in The Community Magazine) can yield interesting ideas at often value-for-money prices, and often of the sort of individual gifts that aren’t necessarily available at the click of a mouse.
For festive food fare, for example, you might want to check out the deals at your quality local butcher or poulterer, baker, confectioner, etc – and maybe award yourself some time for a leisurely trawl through one or more of the excellent markets that pop up within easy reach of home at this time of year. From a practical point of view you can set yourself a budget in advance, so you don’t get too carried away – but with this type of shopping you will invariably

Then there is the minor but still important detail – the visitor who doesn’t drink much, but is very partial to a nice Fino sherry, or the cousin who is strictly vegetarian or, increasingly more likely these days, the guests who are fully committed to a Vegan diet. You can, of course, if hard pressed, let your fingers do the walking and just order everything online, but that tends to lend a certain dull predictability to a season which should be about individuality and surprises. While pondering how to spend your hard-earned cash - and on what – you might also like to consider how much cooking and washing up you intend to do over the Christmas season. Not everybody fancies the idea of a Christmas Day excursion to some favourite local restaurant, but it can be a welcome relief – and a

treat – for those who will be doing all the cookery on December 25 to be able to enjoy at least one special evening where they don’t have to do anything but relax and enjoy themselves. Nor do you have to restrict these choices to the no doubt excellent traditional Christmas offerings, as a diversion into (for example) Asian, Chinese or Mediterranean cuisine can be a welcome break from delightful but very familiar Scottish fare. Of course a lot of pre-Christmas preparation is always going to be strictly practical – you must catch the last posting date for Uncle Archie in New Zealand, and you must place that special order with the family butcher by a certain date… so best to get the “mustdo’s” out of the way as quickly as possible, giving yourself plenty of time to fine tune your own “perfect Christmas” at something like a leisurely pace. Above all, be sure to have yourself a merry little Christmas – it needn’t be a frenetic last-gasp dash to the shops if you get the basics right, and at the end of it you can congratulate yourself, perhaps with a glass of mulled wine and a mince pie, on a “job” that has been not only jolly, but jolly well done.

LIFE-CHANGING FUND-RAISER A local branch of a charity that organises life-changing pilgrimage holidays for disabled and disadvantaged children has raised £14,500 at one event. Group 23, which is part of HCPT Scotland, organised a curry night in Christ the King Church Hall in King’s Park for 200 people. FUTURE OF PO UNCERTAIN plans to launch one soon), applicants should also have “superb customer service”, business management skills and experience, and the ability to quickly identify business opportunities and ways to promote Post Office products in their business.
Local business owners are encouraged to come forward in a bid to secure the future of an East Renfrewshire post office. The Post Office in Newton Mearns closed in September and its future still hangs in the balance because a new postmaster has not been found. Now Post Office Ltd has launched an appeal to find a successful retailer in the area to incorporate a Post Office Local into their existing business. The organisation hopes a suitable candidate will step forward as a new retail partner.
Potential applications must be in by a closing date of November 28 and, in an advert Post Office Ltd states that it wants to “integrate Post Office services into a vibrant and sustainable retail business, so they can be offered over the same opening hours. The exact layout and design will be agreed with you to suit your business.” As well as already running a business in the area (or having
Locals hope the Newton Mearns branch, which was located in McColl’s at The Avenue Shopping Centre, will reopen as soon as possible. It closed (temporarily) on September 14 because the postmaster resigned. Relocating a Post Office is timeconsuming and will require public consultation, then a series of meetings to plan and design the new Post Office branch. Even if a premises is found, it is likely to be months before Newton Mearns has a Post Office again. If you are interested, call 0333 345 5560 (choose option 2) or apply online at www. runapostoffice.co.uk or email nd.enquiries@postoffice.co.uk

DINNER RAISES £500 FOR CHARITY
Senior Savvy with Tasnim Rehman
This month: FAQS: BEING A CAREGIVER Misconceptions may get in the way when applying for a job in care. Here are some frequently asked questions by people who may be verging on a decision to make a career change.
A special meal in memory of a Clarkston father who lost his battle to Motor Neurone Disease has raised more than £500 for charity. The Eid Dinner was organised as part of Eid Ul Adha Festival of Sacrifice and remembered dad-ofthree Doug Corrie, who died last year. The event raised awareness and money for MND Scotland. The dinner was for the families and children connected to Carolside Primary in Clarkston, which is attended by Jamal Imran and Euan Corrie, who is one of Doug’s sons. The dinner and entertainment took place at the Cook and Indi's World Buffet in Darnley. Organiser Maryam Wasim said: “We celebrated the evening in memory of Doug. The Corrie family, including mum Karen,
are well-known locally and help to introduce people to outdoor play through their Greenbank Woodland Play business. “The Corrie family also joined in the fun by organising the children's quiz.” The evening raised a total of £508.98. Maryam said: “I want to say thanks to everyone who came and to the businesses that contributed to prizes and the dinner cakes.” Karen was touched by the event. She said: “Eid is about sacrifice and it was very thoughtful of Maryam to organise the event in memory of Doug and for MND Scotland.”
“I know I’d be great at the companionship side of care and chat to clients all day. But I don’t know if I would want to wash and bathe clients.”
“I’d love to be a CAREGiver as it sounds like something, I’d be great at, but I’ve never worked in care nor received any training! Is there any point in applying?”
“I’ve spent too long stuck inside an office, so I’m looking for a job that will get me outdoors and on my feet. Would being a CAREGiver will achieve this?”
“What happens if I encounter some difficulty or struggle? Would I manage with a client?”
If you’re looking for the answers to these questions or are thinking of becoming a caregiver and are looking for more information call us today or visit: www.homeinstead.co.uk. It’s important to care about the well-being of CAREGivers.

TO OPEN GOOD CAUSES AT WORK because there are many women who can benefit.” The peri-menopause and menopause usually affects women aged from early 40s to mid-50s, although it can occur earlier and later. Until recent years, many women suffered in silence and without support. Now the topic has been making headline news and was recently discussed in the Scottish Parliament. Scotland's Older People and Equalities Minister Christina McKelvie told MSPs she was proud that Holyrood was discussing the menopause publicly. MSPs unanimously backed the motion calling for an end to the stigma that is associated with menopause. In 2017, Scottish broadcaster Kirsty Wark presented a BBC documentary, The Menopause and Me, and, last year, Mariella Frostrup shared her experiences of the menopause in a BBC programme, The Truth about the Menopause. The event is free but ticketed. To book call 0141 876 9555 or pop into The Market Place.
Goods and services of almost £75,000 have been handed out to more than 160 people in just six months thanks to a local charity.
Russell Macmillan, founder of East Renfrewshire Good Causes, is delighted with what the charity has been able to offer
East Renfrewshire Good Causes (ERGC) collects donations and goods, which then benefit people and groups in need. Between April and September this year, a total of £74,149 purchased and donated goods benefited 163 people. Examples include a three-seater pram donated to a mum who is unable to drive due to a medical condition. ERGC partnered with Caudwell Children and Saint Joseph’s Church in Clarkston to make the purchase. Meanwhile, Saint Joseph’s also teamed up with the charity to provide music therapy lessons for a teenager on the autistic spectrum. Further assistance from ERCG included match funding a client’s contribution to access specialist neurological physiotherapy for a local person and helping a family to provide a garden fence
for two children on the autistic spectrum. A mother with MS was also gifted a mobility Scooter and car hoist thanks to ERCG, the family, the MS Society, the Firefighters Benevolent Fund and Saint Joseph’s Church. Further more, a contribution was made to a low income family to enable a secondary school pupil to attend a school trip and two tanks of petrol were supplied for a car to provide transport for kids with special needs. Over 12 years, the charity has helped 2303 people with £895,002
of goods and services. The founder Russell Macmillan said: “The donations and goods supplied by the community and organisations is an incredible insight into the positive things happening in our communities. It’s a snapshot of our modern society and what’s going on at grassroots level in terms of support. I am delighted with what we have been able to offer through our charity.” ERGC relies on regular donations and support from people and businesses in the community. SAM LANDS PANTO ROLE A budding young actor is delighted to have been chosen for a star part in a forthcoming pantomine production of Cinderella. Eight-year-old Sam Felderhof, of Giffnock, will play Buttons in front of audiences at Eastwood Park Theatre, on Rouken Glen Road, from December 11 to 30. The Giffnock Primary School pupil secured a place at GAMTA (Glasgow Academy of Musical Theatre Arts), home to many Scottish stars in the making, when he was just six years old and recently appeared in Bugsy Malone at Brickhouse Theatre, playing one of Fat Sam’s Gang. Sam said: “I was so excited to be told I was going to play Cinderella’s best pal Buttons – I can’t wait to get all the kids in the audience joining Buttons’ gang. “It’s such a fun part to play in what’s set to be a huge GAMTA panto production. All the other cast members have

great experience performing for big audiences and singing with live bands so I’m sure I’ll learn a lot along the way.” Sam will join the rest of the GAMTA cast including leading lady Ava Anderson, who will play Cinderella, and Ugly Sisters Ciara Flynn and Rebecca McComb on stage. The whirlwind of panto has already begun for 18-year-old Ava, who plays Cinderella. She said: “I auditioned on a Wednesday and by the weekend I was at Eastwood Park Theatre in a ballgown for a ‘Selfies with Cinders’ event, having my picture taken with lots of little princesses and prince Charmings. “I’ve been at GAMTA since I was 14. I love singing, acting, dancing and audience interaction so I can’t wait to get the panto rehearsals underway – it’s going to be a brilliant show.” Tickets are £15 standard/£45 for a family panto pass and are on sale now for Cinderella at Eastwood Park Theatre. TOP BANDLEADERS RETURN CARTVALE REOPENS Scotland’s leading professional Showband – Spatz & Co, a unique collaboration among nine top bandleaders, is to return to the Eastwood Park Theatre on Saturday 9th November. Now in their 4th year of theatre performances, they produce a new show each year, regularly sell out, and always get asked back. This is their second visit to Giffnock, and their 2019 touring roadshow is called “One Night in Las Vegas”
The Spatz & Co 2019 show “One Night in Las Vegas” is a musical feast of the songs and instrumentals made famous in Vegas venues such as Caesars Palace, The Sands, The Flamingo, Casino Royale and others.
Spatz & Co comprises 9 experienced professional musicians, all multi instrumentalists, all accomplished solo performers, all specialists in one musical genre or another – big band, blues, soul, funk, jazz, latin, pop, folk, and even a nod to classical. Few bands these days can cover such a variety of music genres.
The music of Glenn Miller, Duke Ellington, Sinatra, Elvis, Barry Manilow, Burt Bacharach, Carlos Santana, Paul Simon, Bob Marley, Eric Clapton and more, all wrapped within a theatrical set and presented in true Showband style with fun and laughter thrown in.
The 9 band members only come together as Spatz & Co for theatre and stage performances or when in the recording studio – they have produced 2 albums, “Unleashed” in 2017 and “On a Clear day” in 2018.
If you admire top quality musicianship, like variety, and enjoy great melody, One Night in Las Vegas is designed to be an uplifting, fun-filled and rewarding trip down memory lane.
A full-scale refurbishment programme has given new life to a local watering hole. The famous Cartvale Pub in Busby, which sits on the Main Street, was renovated in the summer at a cost of £385,000. Inside, the Busby bar has benefited from a new modern look with windows opening out to the gardens. A new kitchen was also created.
new decking and planters. The refurb was part of a bigger programme funded by Star Pubs & Bars. The Cartvale is now marketing itself as a “quality family-friendly pub serving freshly made food with a Scottish slant”.
