MICHAEL’S MALAWI MISSION However, there are around 1300 children in the village who have no access to education, so the charity is now looking to construct another five school facilities in the area.
24 pupils from across East Renfrewshire have been chosen to visit children in Kaponda in Malawi
Michael McLaughlin, a St Ninian’s High School pupil, is heading off on a voluntary trip to Malawi along with 23 other youngsters from across East Renfrewshire. The successful pupils from St Ninian’s, Mearns Castle, Williamwood, Eastwood High, Barrhead High and St Luke’s will leave on October 10 for the 11day adventure. The trip is being organised by the Betty Cunningham Trust, which aims to give children in Kaponda in Malawi a helping hand, lifting them out of abject poverty and giving them the skills that will
allow them to live more selfsufficient lives. The charity has built a health clinic in Dambo, in the town of Kaponda, staffed by a full time nurse and a well to provide villagers with clean drinking water and two schools with full time teachers. These schools cater for more than 400 children between the ages of two and seven, and also provides meals.
Conservatory too cold in the winter and too hot in the summer...
We have an affordable solution
Explaining what he will be doing on the trip, Michael, who is in sixth year, said: “When I’m in Kaponda, I’ll mainly be involved in work such as helping to teach the school pupils and to entertain them with songs and games, aiding the farmers in agricultural work and just generally being a friend for these children who have so little. “Needless to say I can’t wait to go and I’m sure it’ll be a life-changing experience in many regards. From talking to people who have been before, I’ve heard that the kids are so happy and excited to see you, which is remarkable given the poverty they suffer. “However, there will obviously be some challenges as well, both physically and emotionally.” All the pupils taking part in the trip have been heavily involved in fundraising over the last few months, including packing bags in local supermarkets.
Michael McLaughlin from was one of the pupils chosen to visit Malawi
Michael added: “I’ve had to raise £2,500 for my trip, which is another big challenge. Some things I’ve done to fundraise include a four-round golf ‘marathon’, where I started playing at 5am until I had completed 72 holes of golf at about 7:30pm. “I’ve also held a quiz night for family and friends.” Most recently, Michael took part in the Great Scottish Run 10k on September 30. Giffnock group founding members
Giffnock group 25th celebrations
A Giffnock group that has long offered to “open the door to new friendships” is thrilled to be celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. The National Women’s Register Giffnock Group was founded in 1993 by three members Fiona McKemmie, LInda McGee and Anne Queen. The trio had the honour of cutting the anniversary cake, which was made by Anne, at a celebration event earlier this summer. It was while researching the history of the group that a newspaper cutting was found in the archives. The headline in the 1994 newspaper story about the National Women’s Register group said: “Open door to new friendships.”
£38
Group organiser Maureen Campbell said: “This continues to be the spirit of our group. The journalist reported on the creation of a ‘new club’ and that the subject discussed was eating and food labelling. That is still very relevant today.” Groups of the National Women’s Register exist across the UK and are open to all women. Meetings are very informal and offer a warm welcome whatever the age or personal circumstances of members. The Giffnock group comes together for fortnightly
meetings, a monthly coffee morning and enjoys a number of days out each year. This year, trips have included The Artist Textiles Exhibition, a cruise of Loch Lomond, a tour of Glasgow Central Station and various Glasgow walks. Looking ahead, a new programme contains a mix of research topics, a speaker and a couple of “fun” evenings. There are also plans to visit the newly opened V&A museum in Dundee. FANCY GROWING YOUR OWN? An allotments association in East Renfrewshire is on the look out for new members to join in a community of contented fruit and veg growers. Eastwood Nursery Allotments Association (ENAA) has reported a “tremendous year” and thanks in part to an article in this magazine. Colin Stanage, the chairman of ENAA, said: “The magazine feature earlier this year generated a great interest in the allotments here in Giffnock and many people have been busy loving allotment life and growing lots of fruit and veg in their first year on site. “We are now in the process of reorganising some areas of the site so that we can squeeze in more members at our unique facility. We also like to have people on the waiting list for allotments in case
someone suddenly vacates their plot.” Colin points out the health benefits of growing your own fruit and vegetables. He said: “The physical work in tending to your plot, fresh air, chat and camaraderie are great for mental and physical good health, as well as the organically grown produce to eat.” Iain, who has enjoyed his first season at the Eastwood allotments, said he was surprised by the “community aspect”. He said: “I thought it was just about growing vegetables but how wrong I was. While I now enjoy a variety of fresh vegetables and my courgette soup
has gone down well with family and friends, it is the community aspect that has enhanced my experience. I have met new people and developed new friendships. “Further more, my granddaughter and other young visitors are actively involved in growing and harvesting fruit and veg and thereby developing an understanding of where food comes from.

fun TRICK-ORTREATING Trick-or-treating evolved from the ancient Celtic tradition of putting out treats and food to placate spirits who roamed the streets at Samhain, a sacred festival that marked the end of the Celtic calendar year.
Local runner and rising star Neil Gourley won a bronze medal in last month’s Fifth Avenue mile.
Emergency Services Day was marked in the region by raising a flag outside the council headquarters last month. The 999 Day flag comprises an emergency services’ badge, which has a circle embedded into it to represent each emergency service, and the union flag to represent the service to the United Kingdom.
and the effectiveness and efficiency of the emergency services, encouraging people to act responsibly so as to minimise the risk of using the emergency services and emergency services resources.
The flag is similar to the Armed Forces Day flag due to the importance of both days.
Provost Jim Fletcher said: “This event gives the whole of East Renfrewshire an opportunity to mark the hard work and contributions of our emergency services colleagues – past and present – who risk their lives on a daily basis, working tirelessly to care for us and ensure our local area is a safe place to live, work and enjoy.”

ANDY SCORES CAPTAIN ROLE Scotland head coach James McFadden described Andy as an “outstanding candidate” for the role as Scotland captain.
Former St Ninian's High School pupil Andy Robertson has been named as the new Captain of the Scottish national team
He added: “His desire to play is unquestionable and he's done things the hard way”. His appointment will follow in the footsteps of Scottish footballing legends, such as Darren Fletcher, Graeme Souness and Jackie McNamara.
A former pupil at St Ninian’s High School has revealed his delight after being chosen for a prestigious Scottish football post. Professional footballer Andy Robertson, who left the local secondary school in 2012, has been named as the new captain of the national team following Scott Brown’s departure.
This was followed by his first professional contract signing at Dundee United. Andy now plays for Liverpool after making the move to England at the start of last season.
Andy, 24, started his playing career as a youngster at Giffnock Soccer Centre and in the Celtic Youth squad, before moving to local club Queen’s Park.
The defender has enjoyed a stellar year both for his club and country, including playing in the Champions League final against Spanish team Real Madrid.
On the announcement, Andy said it was a “very proud day”. He took up the armband in early September ahead of a friendly match with Belgium in Glasgow and a UEFA Nations League tie against Albania, both three days later. Andy, who is dad to a young son with his partner Rachel Roberts, has accrued 22 caps and scored two goals for his country to date, since a debut against Poland in March 2014. His former school were clearly delighted with the news, tweeting: “Congratulations to @stninianshigh former pupil @ andrewrobertso5 who has been named @ScottishFA captain.”

Laura said: “We had a great time at our first birthday celebration. October 2018 | What's Up Doc?
LUKE’S CZECH RACE TOPS What's Up Doc? with Dr Nick Dunn OFF GREAT SEASON This month: HEALTHIER HABITS
Luke Traynor, 25, put in an impressive performance at the Run Czech Birell 10,000m race last month. The local athlete, who runs for Giffnock North AAC, crossed the line 18th overall and came in as the third European among an elite field. He recorded an impressive time of 29.22, less than a minute off his PB of 28.32. It’s been a great year for Luke with many fantastic performances, which have seen him making his mark as the fifth fastest Briton over 10km since 2000. His time puts him just behind other top athletes such as
Andrew Butchart and Sir Mo Farah. The self-funded athlete is now putting in a bid to gain a sponsor before the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2020, which he says he is on track to achieve. Luke said: “If I had sponsorship it would enable me to be more professional with the sport. “I am doing what I can now, but if I was not racing every month you would see immediate benefits in the races I do run.”
This October “Go Sober for October” and “Stoptober” are being promoted to encourage people to think about alcohol and smoking. Habits can be good as well as bad, and I have heard it said that a habit can be learned within 60 days or less! These campaigns help people take the first steps to changing habits around alcohol or smoking by asking them to commit to no more than 28 days – which can be a manageable timescale to imagine.

Too much alcohol can lead to violence, depression, obesity or liver disease. Many people find that cutting out alcohol for a month helps them reset their drinking levels and sometimes regain control over their intake.

October 2018 | Activate Autumn
ACTIVATE AUTUMN As summer turns to autumn, it can be tempting to stay home preparing for a winter of hibernation. Many walkers will be hanging up their boots, while cyclists will park their bikes in the garage until the fairer weather of spring returns.
Let’s look at the many benefits of staying active – and spending time outdoors – during the Scotland’s chillier seasons.
This includes families, who after a summer of quality time outdoors with the kids, might well be dreading the long, darker months of being cooped up in the house.
To start with, research shows that one of the most effective ways to avoid the winter blues, or the more debilitating SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) is to include at least 30 minutes of daylight in your daily routine.
But your plans for the autumn – and winter – could be different this year.
This could be sitting on a park bench taking in the views, walking to the pond to feed the

successful community led Learn to Swim programme that’s mission is to give all children aged 3-11 the chance to experience quality and cost-effective swimming lessons.
Steve’s own swimming journey started after almost drowning on a family barging holiday at just 7 years old, Parry’s parents immediately enrolled him onto local swimming lessons, kickstarting what would go on to be an incredible career.
With around 1 in 2 children leaving primary school unable to swim in the UK, Steve’s goal was to create swimming opportunities for all children, resulting in happier, healthier and safer communities.
After retiring from professional swimming, Parry ventured into business and set up Total Swimming Academies, which is now a hugely

Exercise is also important for physical well-being and health experts recommend at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity, such as cycling or brisk walking, even in autumn and winter, as well as some strength exercises.
Another way to stay in touch with people when you might feel inclined not to bother is to book to do a fitness class together,
Another benefit of exercise at this time of year is maintaining social links. When the nights draw in and the temperature drops, people prefer to stay at home rather than socialise. However, if you set a date with a friend for a walk and talk, or a bike ride, and then a warming

Small class sizes, fully qualified teachers and online progresprogres sion monitoring are just some of the ways in which Total Swimming make the Learn to Swim journey the best it can possibly be – ensuring the process is convenient for parents and fun for children. Discussing the programme, Parry says: “Giving every child in the community the opportunity to
Learn to Swim is something I am passionate about. Swimming is such a vital skill and should be made available to everyone, which is exactly what Total Swimming is achieving and continues to deliver. The recent introduction of direct debit has made swimming lessons even more accessible, making payment easier and hassle free.”

people you are less likely to find excuses not to do so.
But there is another problem: Even when you know that you should be getting out and about and maintaining exercise, it can be hard to be motivated
Planning to do activities in advance with friends or your family is one good trick. If you have a date to meet or do something with other
If you have planned ahead and the weather is inclement, simply find the right clothing – and still go. For example, a walk can be fun in the rain if you wear full waterproofs, Wellington boots and encourage kids to splash in the puddles. Another great idea is to find a woodland, which will be more sheltered from the weather, and go for a walk. Kicking up the fallen carpet of colourful leaves in autumn will easily lift the spirits. Or how about trying a new adventure activity that is suitable for adults and children together?
5* Aerial Adventure Course Balloch, Loch Lomond
Parents can keep kids busy and active by booking them into school holiday camps and weekend activities. There are plenty of clubs and camps that have autumn and winter programmes. And while the children are learning something new, why not take up a new hobby yourself? Perhaps you have always wanted to sing, play a musical instrument or learn the skills of tennis or badminton? Rather than seeing the next six months as downtime, you could arrive in spring feeling invigorated, fit and fulfilled.

It can only be used where all other effective remedies have been investigated and there is no other remedy available. The process is fundamentally concerned with the actual legality of official decision making and the process of how a decision was reached, as opposed to the substance of the decision itself. It is also concerned with the failings of a body to act within their obligations or duties.

Your Junk Removals
Essentially, this means it is an entirely different remedy to that of an appeal, which is an application to examine the merits of a decision. An application for judicial review must be made within three months of the date on which the grounds giving rise to the application first become apparent. The court does have the power to extend this to a longer period of time if it considers it appropriate to do so. The latest eye exam technology arrives in Newton Mearns SPECSAVERS in Newton Mearns now has exclusive 3D scanning technology in store, allowing Optometrists to view customers’ eyes in more detail than ever before. The Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) machine is a cutting-edge piece of equipment, usually found in hospital eye departments. It has a variety of functions including screening and management of conditions such as age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy. The technology produces a structural scan of the eye, including layers of the eye that would not normally be visible using traditional eye testing techniques. The method creates multiple scan slice images that are built up to form a total image. The scan takes just a few seconds and is non-contact and painless. Store director, Emma Robb, says: ‘We now have the ability to carry out our most detailed eye exam yet. Given that nearly half of all sight loss is preventable*, the sooner we can detect conditions, the sooner we can help manage them. The picture provided by the OCT scan allows us to detect a wide range of conditions and manage these or refer customers for treatment in the most effective way. ‘We’re delighted to be able to offer Newton Mearns customers the benefit of this innovative new technology.’ OCT scans are a free service in addition to the normal eye test and can be requested when the appointment is booked or when the customer arrives in store.

This month: 3: UTI IN THE ELDERLY If a Urinary tract infection is suspected, a doctor will take a urine sample and sometimes a blood test. The infection may be treated with a simple round of antibiotics. Infection prevention with some simple tips and rules: 1 Make sure the elderly person stays hydrated – this can be a difficult struggle if they are embarrassed about incontinence – always provide their favourite drink in an accessible area – encourage water as cranberry juice may irritate some infections that are already present in some people. 2 Make access to the bathroom as easy and as frequently as possible.
Offer incontinence aids or bed pans to reassure them. Encourage good hygiene by providing wet wipes to make cleaning easier. 3 Avoid perfumed soaps, toilet papers. 4 All linens, towels, underwear or bed pans that come in contact with even a small amount of urine should be sanitised frequently to kill bacteria. 5 Consult your doctor – advice is better than treating yourself with home remedies. I hope the advice I have offered in the last 3 sessions have helped build an insight into a very common and distressing condition. Keep safe!

A KICK START FOR TWO SWAP SHOP EVENTS fun FOR COLLECTOR KIDS FOOTIE LOVERS MOVIE MASK
A local youth football club is looking for fresh faces to get involved with its newly formed team. East Ren FC was set up earlier this year and the club is now on the look out for aspiring young players to join their new team. Players of any position, born 2003/04, are encouraged to come along for a try out.
The club trains every Sunday evening at 5.30pm at Pro Soccer based within Rouken Glen Park. Youngsters will also be able to take part in Saturday afternoon games in the Paisley and Johnstone district youth football league.
If your children are keen collectors of Pokemon cards or LEGO figures, they will enjoy two October school holiday events taking place in Newton Mearns this month. The first event at the Waterstones store in the Avenue Centre is a Pokemon swap shop on Friday October 12 from noon to 2pm. Fans can come along to swap old or duplicate cards and try to track down the Pokemon that’s missing from their Pokedex. Organisers promise there are even a couple of PokeGyms right next to the shop, so PokemonGo! afficionados can also get involved in the fun. The following Friday, October 19, also from noon to 2pm,

A CHARITY DOG ROUKEN GLEN JOIN IN THE PARK GOES FOR TOP WALK Dog owners and dog lovers are invited to take
GREEN LIGHT FOR HOUSING PLANS
part in a sponsored walk for a charity that works to support survivors of childhood trauma. The Big Bark in the Park is a family-friendly event and takes place at Rouken Glen Park on Sunday October 7.
Locals are being urged to back Rouken Glen Park as it goes for the title of People’s Choice at the Green Flag Awards. The park has successfully received a Green Flag award for the eighth year in a row – and now it is hoped it will be named the People’s Choice by Keep Scotland Beautiful.
Adults and children, especially those with pet dogs, are welcome to sign up to take part in the scenic 5km stroll, which starts at 11am. Registration is free, with participants requested to aim to raise at least ÂŁ50 in sponsorship, which will be donated to the charity Open Secret.
The public vote will decide the 10 best parks and open spaces across the UK. The People’s Choice top 10 will be announced on October 16. Last year, the park was named the best in Scotland for the second year running.
Open Secret is a service of the wider voluntary organisation Wellbeing Scotland. It supports adult survivors of childhood abuse and trauma. Working with all ages, the charity provides confidential, holistic support services, which include counselling, advocacy, informal support and group work. All four-legged friends taking part in the sponsored walk will receive a goody bag halfway round the walk as a reward for their good work. For more information about the walk see www. eventbrite.co.uk/o/opensecret-12778676936. For further details about Open Secret see www.wellbeingscotland.org.

PUDSEY VISITS LOCAL SHOW Busby & Clarkston Horticultural Society was delighted to welcome charity mascot, Pudsey Bear, to its annual show last month. The popular show, which took place in Clarkston Halls, raised funds for the chosen good cause, Children in Need, this year. Pudsey Bear was there to open the show on September 1 and to welcome the general public. Convener for Busby & Clarkston Horticultural Society, Fergus Cumming, said: “We had a great day at the show and it was wonderful to have Pudsey Bear there. “We believe the final figure for donations and proceeds on the day
for Children in Need should be in excess of £300. The society’s committee also contributed with their own personal Pudsey sunshine boxes. The show had a new layout this year with local traders forming a Market Street down one side of the hall. There were also exhibits of flowers, vegetables, pot plants, handicrafts, baking, floral art and photography, as well as a children’s section with Pudseyrelated items.
