DANCER’S DATE WITH THE QUEEN have so many trophies, winning each one is just as special.
A Highland Dancer from Newton Mearns has been chosen from dancers across the world to perform for The Queen next month.
“I feel like I can work harder to get better. I want to be as good as the world champion one day.” Naturally, Gabriella’s parents are very proud of their Highland dancer daughter, who is also going to Paris to compete in November.
Gabriella Birkmyre, 10, has been competing in Highland Dance competitions since the age of five and has taken home more than 600 medals and almost 40 trophies. But the youngster reckons her biggest achievements to date is being chosen as one of 20 dancers (in her age category) to dance for The Queen at Braemar in November. After going through the strict application process, and submitting all of her competition results from the last year, Gabriella was selected for the prestigious event. The St Clare’s Primary School pupil said: “My mum found out you could dance for The Queen but I had to get accepted. “When I got a letter to say that I was accepted, I felt very excited.” Already the dancer has worked
Mum Maria said: “We enjoy it, too. When you see the amount of commitment and practice she puts in, it’s so rewarding. She is supposed to have one rest day a week, but she dances every day. her way up to the Premier category (the top level of competitive dancers) and recently won a coveted Pre-Champ Trophy. In August, for the first time, she competed in the World Championships at the Cowal Gathering – the world’s biggest Highland games. Gabriella, who dances every day and is a member of Aurea Morrison’s dance school, said: “Dancing is fun. I enjoy it and I make lots of friends. Although I
“Dancing also teaches life skills, such as resilience, confidence and dealing with disappointment when you don’t win. Gabriella has made so many friends from all over the world. She gets so much pleasure from it and it’s a joy to watch her.” Dad James added: “There are some really proud moments when she does well, but also when she doesn’t do well and she is gracious in her defeat. She will go over, congratulate the winners and put on a brave face.”

HONOUR FOR TEACHER ADAM A teacher from Eaglesham has been awarded a prestigious British Empire Medal for his services to raising awareness of stammering.

Adam Black, who overcame his own childhood speech problems, uses the power of the media to help others. He publicises his stutter to ensure that fellow sufferers, and particularly children with the disability, can feel confident and never give up on their aspirations. Adam is a previous pupil of the intensive McGuire programme therapy course, which focuses on a different way of breathing when speaking. This allowed him to get his stutter under control and pursue a teaching career. The following year, in 2008, Adam set up a support group for people who live with a stutter. He has also worked with BBC’s “The Social” to produce a short film to normalise stammering and raise further awareness.
Eaglesham teacher Adam Black, pictured centre with his family, along with Provost Jim Fletcher and other VIPs at his British Empire Medal presentation
He said: "I’m honoured and extremely proud to be presented with a British Empire Medal.
Provost Jim Fletcher said: “I am delighted that an East Renfrewshire resident who has helped improve the lives of many young people living with a stammer has been recognised with the prestigious British Empire Medal.”
“I am over the moon to be recognised in this way and I hope that I can continue to raise awareness of stammering and encourage others to embrace their stutter for many years to come."
The honour was presented to Adam at a ceremony this summer at East Renfrewshire Council Headquarters in Giffnock by Lord-Lieutenant Colonel Peter McCarthy.
This year, Adam started a new role working in the Communication Support Service within Williamwood High School in Clarkston.

We had a whole mix of abilities who did it and are planning a second fundraising event at the end of this month.”
Local people are invited to join a range of Hallowe’en inspired events this month. A Pumpkin Carving Workshop takes place at Greenbank Garden, Clarkston, on October 25, from 4pm to 5.30pm, the 28th from 4.30pm to 6pm and the 29th from 4.30pm to 6pm. Fitness and mental health are closely linked, so SAMH was the ideal charity to raise funds for. Meg explained: “Mental health and fitness go hand and hand and that’s why the company is doing this push.
Members and fitness trainers from Anytime Fitness in Clarkston at the finish line of the recent Rough Runner event
A team of gym-goers from Anytime Fitness in Clarkston has raised almost £1000 for a mental health charity. Nine gym members joined four fitness trainers to take on the 10k Rough Runner Obstacle Course recently in a bid to raise funds for the Scottish Association for Mental Health (SAMH). The 13-strong Anytime Fitness team completed the Edinburgh event, which is similar to Tough Mudder, making them “Roughians”.
“There are so many studies that prove that going to the gym for just 20 minutes a day is beneficial because you release endorphins, the happy hormone. We have an open-door policy so if you haven’t been to a gym before, you would be made most welcome.”
Meg Lough, manager of the Clarkston gym, said: “Every Anytime Fitness franchise aims to raise £1000 for a mental health charity in 2019, and this was one of our ways of doing it. We chose SAMH and are up at £800 already.” Rough Runner is an obstacle course that has been inspired by UK TV game shows like Total

GS DEEP A WILD NIGHT IN BUSBY the world to be used in buildings in Sydney, Australia. Dr Nisbet, who has a PhD in history, said: “We’ll be walking all over Giffnock to see the different places where these mines and quarries were worked. “The history is all buried and the quarries have been infilled, so you cannot actually see much of it on the surface but we’ll get to the bottom of it to help people understand what’s under their feet.” Stuart is one of several historians employed by the council who is passionate about history and sharing his knowledge with local people. He has published many articles about the history of the local area, including Clarkston and Netherlee, as well as Giffnock. He said, laughing: “It’s a hobby that got out of hand – I am actually a structural engineer who always had an interest in history and eventually did a PhD in history in my own time.” To join the historian on the next Discovering Giffnock talk, contact Amanda at Giffnock Library on 0141 577 4956.
The head of Scotland’s biggest wildlife charity is coming to East Renfrewshire to speak about what we can do to protect species locally. Dr Linda Rosborough of the Scottish Wildlife Trust has been invited to deliver a talk to members of the Clarkston and East Kilbride District Group of SWT later this month. The club, which aims to update locals on wildlife news and events, meets monthly in Duff Memorial Hall in Busby and is one of dozens of local groups. Linda, who has advised the House of Commons Environment Select Committee, will be attending on October 21 at 7.30pm to present her talk called Perspectives in Marine Conservation. She will cover changes in our approach to managing the marine environment in recent years and the challenges for the future. It is part of a short tour of other district groups across the country and Linda is keen to visit as many as possible.
Dr Linda Rosborough of the Scottish Wildlife Trust will deliver a talk in Busby on October 21
Linda, a former Director of Marine Scotland who retired in 2016, said: “In my time as chair, I want to meet as many groups as I can to learn more about their inspiring work. “Scotland’s environment is under greater pressure than at any point in history. One in 11 species are threatened with extinction and climate change is having an increasing impact. “But despite the great challenges facing our environment we have good reason to be hopeful

about the future. Growing awareness means that people are becoming more willing to help.” She explained that people can help local wildlife by leaving a small corner of their garden to go wild or join a local Scottish Wildlife Trust group and become part of a network of more than 40,000 members. The cost to attend the talk is £2 for members and a suggested donation of £3 for non-members. Also see: www.facebook.com/ cek.swt.

DONATED PIANO PLAYS ON A local charity has been instrumental in helping to pass on a generous donation to a dementia day care facility in Giffnock.
Russell Macmillan, Founder of ERGoodCauses with Carol McDonald, Day Care Organiser at the Centre
East Renfrewshire Good Causes (ERGC) was gifted a piano by a local family, which was then handed on to Age Concern Eastwood Dementia Centre, known as “the Stables”, in Eastwood Park. ERGC organised and paid for the piano to be uplifted and delivered to its new home. The piano is now being used by centre customers and staff alike. Carol McDonald, the day care organiser, said: “It is so lovely to see some of our centre users, who may be very quiet and relatively withdrawn, coming to life by sitting and playing the piano. It is a wonderful addition to our resources.” Russell Macmillan, who is registered blind, is the founder of ERGC. He set up the charity as a way to say thank you after a life-saving double transplant in
2007 that helped to cure his Type 1 insulin diabetes and kidney failure. He said: “ERGC exists to show people in our area that their community cares for them. The fact that so many folk will benefit from this very generous donation makes the work we do so worthwhile. “ERGC normally provide goods and services to individuals that are over and above whatever level the state provides, but we will happily work with any

THE VENUES As the title suggests, the show offers a taste of ‘the entertainment capital of the world’, Las Vegas. Although the sheer scale of glitz, glamour, neon, themed hotels and Casino revelry may be hard to replicate, what can be celebrated in more modest style is some of the most iconic music to have been performed by some of the greatest singers, musicians and entertainers who have graced the stages of those world famous Vegas venues, such as Caesars Palace, The Sands, The Flamingo, Casino Royale, The Mandarin Oriental, and more. THE MUSIC Music made famous by the Big Bands of Duke Ellington, Glenn Miller and Benny Goodman, hit songs by Frank Sinatra, the trailblazing recordings of Elvis, the compositions of Burt Bacharach for Dionne Warwick, the singer song-writing of Barry Manilow, Paul Simon, Eric Clapton, the soaring guitar solos of Carlos Santana, The Eagles and others. From foot-tapping swing from the American Songbook, to Blues, Soul and Reggae; from Latin rhythms and Gospel to Jazz, Funk and Pop hits – there’s something in the programme for most tastes. VAST EXPERIENCE The ever more popular 9-piece band is unique in the UK as it comprises nine of Scotland’s finest musicians, each one a bandleader, each one a multiinstrumentalist, each one a solo performer in his own right. Collectively, with over 200 years of performing experience under their belts, they only come together for theatre and stage shows. Given the specialist knowledge and experience of every musician, the quality of musical performance evident on stage has contributed to a growing and much respected reputation. In an age when theatre tends to be dominated by tribute acts, the freedom and musical selfexpression of Spatz is becoming recognised as what makes their shows so different and so special. ‘One Night in Las Vegas’ arrives at Eastwood Park Theatre on Saturday 9th November at 7.30pm. Tickets are £20, and are now on sale via the Box Office on 0141 577 4956 or online at www.eastwoodparktheatre.co.uk
The new 2019 show ‘One Night in Las Vegas’ is a must see for all music lovers.

ANNUAL FLOWER SHOW SUCCESS What's Up Doc? Winners at the recent Busby & Clarkston Annual Flower Show
with Dr Nick Dunn
This month: MAN-FLU IS REAL! I sometimes worry that people under-estimate the effects of flu – even though we men are very brave about it!
More than 150 visitors enjoyed the Busby & Clarkston Annual Flower Show last month. Clarkston Halls was filled with a colourful display of exhibits including flowers, pot plants, vegetables, baking and handicrafts. Winners of the various categories were picked from across East Renfrewshire and beyond. Thomas Dunn, of Mount Vernon, won the top prize for his dahlias, while the winning chrysanthemums were grown by Robert Loggie, of East Kilbride. Winner of the Vegetable Trophy for most firsts was John Kinloch, of Carmunnock, with Peter Watson, of Giffnock, picking up the Best Vegetable exhibit. Clarkston gardeners Fergus Cumming won the Best Pot Plant
and trophy for most firsts in Pot Plants and Pat Stevenson won the best Floral Exhibit in Show. The prize for most points over the whole show went to Fergus, too. Many other prizes were handed out in baking, handicrafts, photography, wine and the young exhibitors’ section. The show, organised by Busby & Clarkston Horticultural Society, had a new format with all the exhibits homed in the main Hall. A spokesperson said: “This was well accepted by the visiting public.” New members are always welcome at the society. See http://bachs.co.uk.
Seriously though, the influenza virus can sometimes do serious damage. Complications include pneumonia, worsening of heart or lung problems or diabetes, and even meningitis. Pregnant women can be at risk of premature labour or early miscarriage. We can all play a part in reducing its spread, and this includes vaccinations for all at-risk people, including those over 65, and with long term conditions. This month all Practices across the country will start vaccinating this large group
of people, please contact your doctors surgery to find out when their Flu Clinic is running, they will be expecting a big turnout! Find out if you need the vaccine from your Practice. Remember that doing simple things can also stop flu spreading. The virus can survive for 24 hrs outside the body, so regular handwashing, keeping surfaces such as door handles, tables and computer keyboards clean, and disposable tissues going straight in the bin are important. And remember, even simple flu leaves people feeling pretty rotten for a few days, so be sympathetic…even to the men!

RECLAIM YOUR LOFT SPACE
How to gain up to a third more storage space in your home, in just one day! Space is critical in every home. Think of the number of times you’ve thought “it would be good to keep this, the problem is where?” Well, how about your loft? In the average home it accounts for between a quarter to one-third of the volume. That’s a huge area that can add so many uses and benefits to family life. Perhaps it’s difficult to get into? Not floored for storage or use? Local company Access4lofts solve all these problems with simplicity. They specialise in developing lofts for storage.
Boarded and useful...
Safe access to your loft...
With the problems of moving house today, not to mention all the stress of the move, this is a simple solution which adds value to your property. With a safe ladder giving access to your loft everybody can store their goodies away from the living area. And, if you are planning to sell your home, easy access to the loft space could give your home the advantage over other houses your buyer might be looking at.
The majority of properties have an access hatch to the space in the loft. Access4Lofts create space the easy and affordable way. They can supply and install a new loft hatch and a safe, sturdy aluminium loft ladder in your home in just one day! That means that your dark and dismal roof space suddenly becomes a useful storage area for all that family clutter.
Another option is to install a loft hatch and ladder and board out a decent sized area of your loft. This gives you somewhere to store the suitcases or keep your Winter/Summer clothes. As soon as you have this additional space you’ll wonder how you lived without it for so long.
Added property value exceeds fitting cost...

Local people who want to make a difference to children’s lives are being sought by Children’s Hearings Scotland. GETTING SET FOR A FUN Wild weather, plunging temperatures and long, dark nights… autumn in Scotland is as different from the best days of the fickle summer as night from day. That is the “glass half empty” way of looking at a season which can be too readily assumed to be useful only for indoors activities based on evening studies, and risks missing some great opportunities for outdoor entertainment. You may have to wrap up warm, and not every day is going to be ideal for healthy walks or team sports, but in some ways – so long as you choose your times
and places carefully – the third quarter of the year can be every bit as interesting as the halcyon days of summer. While it’s true that during the summer holidays some agencies do their best to provide a variety of opportunities the plain fact is that most clubs, schools, etc, are either completely shut down or are operating on a limitedservice basis, while in autumn virtually every school, college and local club organisation
in the land has an active programme of indoor and often outdoor activities to offer. It is the season of “autumn gold”, when at its best, when attractions that are mobbed in the summer are suddenly largely free from tourists – the National Park, for example, still sees its fair share of visitor interest, but is much easier to enjoy during the less hectic days of autumn than in mid-summer, the season of mass participation festivals and crowds. By carefully selecting from the bewildering array of possibilities open to us in autumn it’s relatively easy to construct
For every time, there is a season… …for every season, there is an adventure.

Trick or Treat?
Autumn an active and rewarding programme that allows you to socialise, study indoors or get out into the countryside – perhaps all in the same week.
The trick is to organise your time in such a way that you always have a Plan B if the weather makes outdoor activities seem more trouble than they are worth. That way you can shelve one idea and switch seamlessly to an indoors alternative, rather than just “see what’s on the telly” and lose what could have been an interesting spell doing something truly entertaining or productive.
An autumn spent almost exclusively indoors is going to be pretty dull, and it’s worth taking the trouble to plan at least some events that will get you out and about on “the good days” – which are usually more plentiful than perhaps often supposed. If that means a game of floodlit five a side football, or a simple walk through a beautiful landscape close to home, it has to be better than seemingly endless months of waiting for supposedly ideal weather to arrive.
If you hit the archetypal wet and windy night there are plenty of resources for swimmers, sports

fans, runners and the rest to release pent up energy that might otherwise be dissipated by dreary nights in front of the box. The advertisements on these pages are a great place to start for inspiration – if one idea does not appeal, another will possibly intrigue. Towards Christmas it’s a different scene altogether, with most people increasingly preoccupied with preparations for the festive break, while by contrast autumn is perhaps the most active season for club activities – indoors or outdoors.
Jen: Why didn’t the skeleton like the Halloween sweets? Alan: Why? Jen: He didn’t have the stomach for it! Martin: What’s a ghost’s favourite room? Debbie: I dunno. Martin: The living room! Elaine: Why don’t ghosts like rain on Halloween? Iain: Why? Elaine: It dampens their spirits! Lynn: What’s a vampire’s favourite fruit? Taylah: I have no idea. Lynn: A necktarine!

A large part of the role of a family solicitor is guiding clients through the separation process and advising about financial provision upon divorce. In Scotland matrimonial assets are divided fairly between the parties so it is important that there is a clear understanding as to what matrimonial assets are. Matrimonial Property is defined in s10 of the Family Law (Scotland) Act 1985 and includes all of the property belonging to the parties, or either of them at the relevant date, being the date of separation, which was acquired by them either: Before the marriage for use by them as a family home or as furniture or plenishings for that home; or
During the marriage but before the date of separation. There are of course some exceptions to these rules. Gifts or inheritance received by one party are expressly excluded as is property acquired by either individual before the marriage, unless, as already stated, it was acquired with the intention that it be for family use. An example of this would be a home that was bought by one person before the marriage but was intended to be the family and ultimately the matrimonial home. It is not always a clear cut process and it is important to seek legal advice when considering financial division upon divorce.

GTP STAGE THE MATCHMAKER Senior Savvy with Tasnim Rehman
TIME FOR COFFEE, CHAT
This month: AND COMPANIONSHIP Did you know...
A theatre company will be performing a comedy for their first play of the 2019/20 season. Giffnock Theatre Players has been putting the final touches to The Matchmaker, which will be at local Eastwood Park Theatre this month. The farcical comedy was written by American writer Thornton Wilder. GTP member David Pearson said: “The Matchmaker is a rewrite of Wilder's own play The Merchant of Yonkers and it premiered at the Edinburgh Festival in 1954. “The two central characters are matchmaker and widow Dolly Levi and grumpy millionaire Horace Vandergelder. “The play was the inspiration for the famous Hollywood musical Hello Dolly. The Matchmaker contains all the elements of farce, with romantic entanglements,
characters hiding from one another, mistaken identities and lots more.” GTP has presented the play previously in 1986, when audiences raved about it. The Matchmaker runs from Wednesday October 16 to Saturday October 19 at Eastwood Park Theatre. Performances are at 7.30pm with an additional Saturday matinee at 2.30. Tickets cost £15/13 (+ booking fee) and can be obtained from Giffnock Theatre Players at 07518 201756 or by emailing ticketsgtp@hotmail.co.uk. Alternatively contact Eastwood Theatre box office at www. eastwoodparktheatre.co.uk/box office.
• Today, over two million people aged 75 and over are living on their own in the UK. • Feeling lonely can have a fatal impact on your mental and physical health. • Research shows a lack of social interaction could be as bad for you as smoking 15 cigarettes a day. • A lack of social stimulation is harmful for people living with dementia. Exaggerating the impact of the condition, leading to depression and encouraging withdrawnness. • Top triggers for loneliness include – being reminded of
someone they miss, lonely on special occasions - Christmas and birthdays and housebound due to ill health/poor mobility. Today as we connect with our community, it is still sad to see that so many elderly people don’t expect the feelings of loneliness to go away and think these are out of their control. A Scottish cat rescue and rehoming charity is inviting pet fans to a popular annual photographic show in Giffnock. Catflap will host the event in Giffnock United Reformed Church, on Fenwick Road, on Saturday November 9, from 11am to 3pm. In addition to the show with many photographs of beautiful cats, there will be a wide variety of stalls to browse, from home-baking and preserves to hand-made jewellery and hand-crafted cards and accessories, as well as Christmasthemed goods and bric-a-brac. There will also be a tearoom for guests to enjoy a morning coffee and cake, or a filled roll with homemade soup at lunchtime.
The cat rehoming charity Catflap was founded 22 years ago and operates from a small rescue shelter in the northern suburb of Glasgow, Bearsden, as well as having foster homes across – and beyond – the city.
Volunteers will be judging the various categories of cat photographs on show throughout the day. A spokesperson for Catflap said: “We hope to have a very busy and fun-filled day and are looking forward to seeing as many people as possible who can attend this event with us. “It has been a popular show in recent years and we hope it will prove to be the same this time around.”
More than 4,000 cats and kittens have been rehomed through Catflap but the charity reports that their work gets busier every year. They are always keen to hear from new and potential volunteers. To find out more about the charity see “Catflap” on Facebook.

SEE ‘QUEEN ECO-FRIENDLY MILK PROJECT OF SCOTTISH COMEDY’ Philippa MacColl of Dandy's Delicatessen in Clarkston has installed a milk vending machine to help reduce plastic
“When it arrived, we didn’t realise it was so big and heavy. It wouldn’t fit through the front door so we had to take it in the back. We then dismantled two doorways, just to get it into the front of the shop. We were very determined to install the milk machine and are so pleased to have been successful.”
A local theatre plays host to the stand-up comedian Janey Godley this month. The so-called Queen of Scottish comedy brings her tour, Beyond the Fringe, to Eastwood Park in Giffnock on October 24 at 8pm. Audiences will be treated to “hilarious patter from Big Tereeza and Nicola up on the big screen”. Janey has more than 40 million hits online and appeared on BBC's Have I Got News for You, as well as BBC Scotland's Breaking the News. Tickets are £17 each, for over 18s only. It also has other health benefits, such as helping with things like your immune system and various illnesses. “I love teaching Tai Chi and helping other people to realise its benefits." Tai Chi Chaun and Qigong, also called Tai Chi, combines relaxed breathing with slow and gentle movements.
Originally developed as a martial art in 13th century China, Tai Chi is today practised around the world as a health-promoting exercise, while Qigong, the Chinese practice of aligning breath, movement and awareness for exercise, healing and martial arts training, extends back more than 4000 years.
