GREATEST SHOW A Clarkston-based amateur theatre production company hopes to continue a sell-out streak with The Greatest Show this month. Theatre South Productions has been a prominent group in the local arts community for more than 25 years and annually delivers a week-long musical performance and a unique cabaret show. The show will include favourite hits from the biggest musicals of all time, including Wicked, Footloose, Chicago and, of course, The Greatest Showman. The show follows their recent sell-out performances of Hairspray and 9 to 5: The Musical at Eastwood Park Theatre. The team hope the latest show will be just as popular.

The Friends of Greenbank Garden have launched a series of expert talks to raise funds

A local garden charity has launched a series of expert talks to support an innovative fund-raising goal for a horticultural student. The Friends of Greenbank Garden talks start on Saturday September 8 with Simon Jones, the National Trust for Scotland (NTS) Gardens and Designed Landscapes Manager for Glasgow and the West. He will talk about his horticultural career, from his time with the pandas at Edinburgh Zoo to working with the NTS.

Plumbing & Heating Experts

The second talk, on October 13, is with Robert Ross, the regional operations coordinator for Scotland for the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. His talk is entitled, 100 Years of Remembrance. The third talk will be given by David Mitchell, a trustee of the NTS, Chair of Scotland’s Gardens and ex-curator of the glass houses

Aileen Johnston, the secretary of Friends of Greenbank Garden, said: “It is the first time we have done a fund-raising campaign like this. We hope to be able to fund a 10-week placement for a student from SRUC (Scotland’s Rural College) next summer. We hope people will come along to the talks and to support us in our quest. There are further talks planned for next year and a proposed Christmas Fair in November. The Friends support Greenbank Garden by volunteering at the NTS property. They hold informal meetings on the second Monday of each month at 10.30am. NEW PLAY, NEW VENUE 180-seater theatre has been chosen for their latest offering and will hopefully reach out beyond the core southside audience.

A long-established amateur theatre group is busy rehearsing for the first production of their 2018/2019 season next month. Giffnock Theatre Players will present Martin McDonagh’s dark comedy The Cripple of Inishmaan at the end of October at a new Glasgow venue. The play is set in the small community of Inishmaan off the west coast of Ireland in 1934, where the inhabitants are excited to learn of a Hollywood film crew's arrival in neighbouring Inishmore to make a documentary about life on the islands. The story evolves as “cripple” Billy Claven, eager to escape the

gossip, poverty and boredom of Inishmaan, vies for a part in the film. The Cripple of Inishmaan premiered in 1996. The 2013 West End run starred Daniel Radcliffe and was a sellout. This production transferred to Broadway the following year, receiving six Tony Award nominations. Now Giffnock Theatre Players (GTP) brings the play to Glasgow audiences at Webster's Theatre on Great Western Road. The

Conservatory too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter...

We have an affordable solution

GTP chair Glynis Poole (pictured) said: “This is the first of three plays the club is presenting this season. The January production will be the classic thriller "Dial M For Murder" and in April we are presenting "The Diary of Anne Frank". If folk sign up for all three plays they will get the benefit of an attractive discount. Just contact us at the club to find out more.” The Cripple of Inishmaan is at Webster's Theatre from Wednesday October 31 to Saturday November 3 at 7.30pm, with a Saturday matinee at 2.30pm. Tickets are £15 and £13, from the theatre on 0141 357 4000 or www.webstersglasgow.com. Alternatively, contact GTP.on 07518 201756 or by emailing tickets-gtp@hotmail.co.uk. PUPILS ARE TOP OF THE CLASS Ross had been given a one per cent chance of full recovery after the skiing accident in December 2016. He had been training with Glasgow ski racing team in Austria when he crashed and hit his head. After months in hospital he had to learn how to walk, talk and eat again and only returned to school in May last year.

East Renfrewshire schools have had a record-breaking year with the best ever SQA exam results

It has been a record-breaking year for school pupils across East Renfrewshire with the best ever SQA exams results. The number of pupils that achieved Advanced Highers was the highest to date. This year has also seen the most students passing five or more Highers. Some 93 per cent of S4 pupils achieved five or more National 4 qualifications, with three quarters gaining five or more National 5s. Williamwood High had its best S5 results, with Eastwood and Mearns Castle also showing

good progress. St Ninian’s also had more final year students achieving at least one Advanced Higher than ever before. One of the Williamwood’s pupils, Ross Nesbitt, was also commended on his results. Despite being involved in a horrific accident the 16-year-old achieved seven As and a B in his National 5 exams.

East Renfrewshire Council's Convener for Education and Equalities, Councillor Paul O'Kane, said: “It takes hard work and dedication to achieve such fantastic results and once again our pupils across the whole area have raised the bar. “With record-breaking Higher and Advanced Higher results, as well as another extremely strong performance in National 4s and 5s, the achievements of our pupils never cease to amaze me. “Well done to everyone for another year of excellent results.”

ORCHESTRA TWO ATHLETES ARE FLYING HIGH GET JAMMIN’ THIS AUTUMN COMPETITION The Community Magazine has teamed up with Scottish Fiddle Orchestra to offer you a chance to win tickets to the Scottish Fiddle Orchestra Concert. We have 3 pairs of tickets to give away for the Scottish Fiddle Orchestra Concert held at the Royal Concert Hall on Saturday 15th September.

Berlin's Olympic Stadium played host to the European Athletics Championships in August

Two local high jumpers competed for Team GB at the European Athletics Championships in Berlin last month.

To enter the Orchestra Competition, email info@ thecommunitymagazine.co.uk with "Orchestra Competition" in the subject line. Include your name, address, phone number and answer the following question:

Nikki Manson, 23, and David Smith, 27, joined the British team at the event held in the Olympic Stadium. The European Games 2018 was held jointly in the German city and Glasgow.

Which concert hall is the Scottish Fiddle orchestra playing in on 15th September?

In Berlin, at her first senior championships, Nikki achieved a great jump of 1.81 in the qualifying round and to finish in joint 18th place overall.

The deadline for entries is 5pm Monday 10th September

David cleared 2.16 in the qualifying round to take joint 20th overall. Prior to the competition, both athletes expressed their delight

at being selected within such a tough group. Nikki tweeted: “I'm so unbelievably honoured to get my first GB call up and can’t wait to get out there and represent. Let’s finish this season on a high!” Earlier this year, Nikki donned her Scotland vest for April’s Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast in Australia. David also competed on the Gold Coast and smashed his personal best at the British Championships.

Join the Dams to Darnley countryside rangers to forage for edible fruit and berries in your local area – and then learn how to make jam. On Saturday September 8, from noon until 2pm, the rangers will take you through all the steps, starting with a walk to identify and collect the right – and safe – fruits to pick. You will then be taught how to cook the jam and pot it. Foragers are asked to be prompt at the meeting place at the Patterton train station overflow car park in Newton Mearns. JOIN CHOIR’S OPEN EVENING

Eastwood Choral Society is celebrating its 35th Anniversary this year

A busy and sociable choir is keen to encourage new singers – especially men – to attend an open rehearsal evening this month. Eastwood Choral Society, which celebrates its 35th anniversary this year, is a mixed voice adult choir based in Giffnock and draws members from around East Renfrewshire and south Glasgow. The repertoire is mainly classical music although the choir also sings other types of music. Rehearsals are on Mondays from 7.30pm to 9.30pm in Park Church during the season, which runs from late August until early May.

This month, an open rehearsal takes place on September 10 when people who might be interested in joining the choir can come along to find out more. Treasurer Anne Brooks said: “We’re always looking to welcome new members, all voices, and we are particularly keen to encourage men to give it a go. There are no auditions and you don't have to be an

experienced singer to sing with us. New members are welcome to join us at the open rehearsal or at any rehearsal through the year.” The choir also offers small scholarships, through a partnership with East Renfrewshire Schools Music Department, to senior pupils in local schools to enable them to experience choral singing.

in the spring to celebrate the 35th anniversary. Anne added: “We are a very friendly and sociable group and would welcome anyone who would like to come along and sing with us.”

The society’s programme this year will be Schubert’s Mass no See the Facebook page Eastwood 2 in G Major and Hayden’s Te Deum in C Major for a Christmas Choral Singers or contact concert and a gala opera concert gillatecs@gmail.com

SCOUTING FOR SCOUT LEADERS

New scout leaders are being sought by the 121st Clarkston Glasgow Scout Group, who are celebrating their 90th birthday this month

The 121st Clarkston Glasgow Scout Group is appealing for new scout leaders as the group celebrates a special anniversary this year. The group will be toasting its 90th birthday at the scout hall in Aidans Brae in Clarkston on Saturday September 29 at 7.30pm. They are inviting all former leaders, members and group executives to come along. They are also hoping to attract new scout leaders to be part of the 121st Clarkston group on either a Monday or Friday night for their 7.30pm to 9.30pm sessions. Scout Leader Ellie Campbell believes the role can bring lots of benefits. She said: “I enjoy being a scout leader as I get to interact

with the young people and help them to develop skills that they will use for life. “It has also helped me develop my own leadership skills and confidence as I am always learning different ways to teach and lead activities. Working with scouts has improved my communications skills, helped create good teamwork and given me transferable skills that have helped me to be successful in job interviews. To become a scout leader, you should have patience, good organisational skills and be a

good role model to younger children. There are scout modules to be completed for leaders and there are training advisors on hand to help with guidance and support. Abbie Campbell started as a parent helper two hours each week before progressing to become a scout leader and helping out at weekend camps. She said: “All the leaders have different amounts of time they are able to offer. It is very satisfying to watch a scout use and share skills and knowledge they have learnt during their time at scouts. If you are interested in becoming a leader contact Gillian Stuart: gingar@ntlworld.com.

BOILER

SALE

NOW ON

NICE, the National Institute for Clinical Excellence, has approved a new steam treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia. This condition is very common, affecting many men beyond the age of 50. The prostate gland is only found in men, and sits at the base of the bladder. It normally tends to grow with age, and in older men can cause restricted flow of urine from the bladder. This can result in increased visits to the toilet, which can affect sleep if during the night, slowed emptying of the bladder and increased risk of urine infections. At its most severe it can cause complete blockage, and as

the bladder continues to fill, this can become very painful, relieved only by passing a tube (catheter) into the bladder. The steam treatment being pioneered is not widely available, but involves passing a tube into the prostate and puffing steam to remove some of the excess tissue and widen the passage, and may have fewer complications than surgery. Men with even early prostate symptoms should speak to their doctor, who can arrange tests to rule out prostate cancer and may suggest medication which can help relieve symptoms. But don’t expect steam treatment just yet!

FESTIVAL SHOWCASE OFFER

LOCH LOMOND LIVE

A major music festival taking place near Loch Lomond this month is offering a unique opportunity for some young up and coming artiste.

COMPETITION

Loch Lomond Live – which takes place at Drymen’s Show Field on September 22 and 23 – have launched the LLL: Upcoming competition on Facebook, offering the chance for a talented local act to perform a “stripped back” set on their Session Stage on the Saturday.

The Community Advertiser has teamed up with Loch Lomond Events to offer you a chance to win tickets to the Loch Lomond Live music festival.

This will effectively launch the brand new festival, and is a high profile opportunity that could help some talented performer reach a larger audience. The festival welcomes acts including Donnie Munro (exRunrig) and Highland group Tide Lines to the national park, as well as popular festival acts Clann an Drumma, Trail West and Rollin Drones, and around 5,000 visitors are expected to descend on the area over the weekend.

Tide Lines will be one of the headliners at this year's Loch Lomond Live

Organiser Ross Coutts said: “We’re very keen to support local bands too - around a third of our line-up is from nearby areas.“ Have Mercy Las Vegas and Dave Arcari are probably the two most well-known, but the likes of Folky Macfolk Face, The Foz & The Super Pumas are doing really well, and I’m sure they’ll all put on a great live performance”. The eclectic line-up also features the best emerging indie rocks acts with Declan Welsh, Foreignfox and Mark Sharp and the Bicycle Thieves among

the offering, and the festival organisers have confirmed there might still be one or two announcements to come before day splits are revealed at the end of the month: “We’ve a couple of surprises up our sleeve, so we’re hopeful to confirm all information in the next couple of weeks, it’s going to be special”, said Ross. As well as the live music, festivalgoers can enjoy local food and drink produce, plus a host of activities, attractions and family fun across the weekend.

We have 2 Family Weekend Tickets (worth £60 each) to giveaway for the Loch Lomond Live held at the Drymen’s Show Field on 22nd and 23rd September. To enter the LLL: Upcoming Competition, email editor@ communityadvertiser.co.uk with "LLL: Upcoming Competition" in the subject line. Include your name, address, phone number and answer the following question: Where is the event being held? The deadline for entries is 5pm 14th September

A local athletics club has announced it will embark on a trip to the annual World Youth Games in Gothenburg, Sweden, next summer.

A series of new local history courses start this month with a focus on Netherlee since the 18th century.

Following the successes of the 2017 trip, Giffnock North AC says it is keen to get as many young athletes as possible involved again.

The informal and interactive lessons, from September 3 to October 1 (excluding September 24), will be led by expert tutor Dr Stuart Nisbet at Clarkston Hall.

The Games will take place in the spectacular Ullevi Stadium (pictured) and will be the first opportunity for many budding young athletes to take part in a major competition. The youngsters who meet the tough qualifying standards will compete against fellow athletes from all over the world. Find out more about the club at www.giffnocknorth.co.uk.

The first session will comprise a walk to gather information on the ground, followed by three classes each Monday from 1pm to 2.30pm. Dr Nisbet will be on hand to answer your questions and to open your eyes to a side of the area you may never have seen before. Novices and history boffins alike are welcome at these classes. The cost of the full course is £42.40 for adults, £34.80

for over 60s and £21.60 for concessions. A number of “Introduction to Ancestry” sessions will also take place this month at Giffnock, Mearns and Clarkston libraries. The sessions will introduce you to the Ancestry Library Edition website and show you how to search millions of records.

12 Steps to the Pe When it comes to wedding planning there’s no right or wrong way to do it. Our simple step by step planning guide consists of the 12 main tasks that every couple should have on their to-do-list. 1

Plan Budget

Have an open discussion about your finances. How much you can afford and how much you will be able to save. If your parents are helping, inlcude them early in your discussions. Not planning can lead to a lot of financial stress later on.

2

Venue

Your venue will determine your date, location and your maximum guest numbers, so make choosing your venue one of the first things on your to-do list. Do you need accommodation? Does the venue offer its own catering?

3

Bridal Party

Think carefully about who will be the best people to support you on your special day. Extra costs may include outfits, bouquets, buttonholes and thank you gifts, so the more people you have, the more this could impact your budget.

4

Guest List

Decide who to invite to the day versus the evening taking into account your guests' plus ones. Based on your budget your guest list may need to be determined by how much you want to spend per head on catering.

5

Suppliers

Your venue may have a list of recommended suppliers, but you might want something a little bit different so gather all the options before booking your suppliers and paying your deposits. Don't be afraid to shop around!

6

Bride's Dress

A lot of wedding gowns can take up to six months so give yourself plenty of time. Once you have chosen your dress, turn to bridesmaid dresses that will complement your wedding gown and groomswear that will suit the style of your big day.

Although it may feel strange telling guests what you want as a gift, it will actually make the process easier for them. Your guests will want to buy you a gift so save them the stress of trying to decide what to buy and create a wedding gift list.

8

Stationery

11

Your invitations should be sent out approximately 3-6 months in advance. It’s never too early to choose a design, style or stationery supplier that you love. Send out 'Save the Date’ cards ensuring your guests keep that date free.

Guests will have a deadline to reply but there will be a few to chase up! Put your guests into family and friend groups keeping those who may need nearer the exits. Once complete, get creative with your table names and table plan display.

Honeymoon

Hopefully your awesome bridesmaids and amazing best man will have this covered but make sure you know if there's anything you need to prepare for, pack or pay for so you can factor this into your planning and your budget.

12

If you have budgeted your honeymoon costs, then you can book straight away. If not, you can always plan a 'minimoon' for after the wedding, then spend some time saving towards your official honeymoon trip later on.

Stag & Hen Dos

Final Touches

Decide on your wedding songs and wedding readings for the ceremony. Think about who is going to do speeches at the reception and order any thank you gifts that you want to give to those who have really helped during the planning process.

ASSISTANCE This month: LEGAL AT A POLICE STATION The right to legal advice from a solicitor, if you are being held by the police on suspicion of committing a crime, was introduced by statute in Scotland following the UK Supreme Court case of Cadder v HM Advocate. You now have the right to speak to a solicitor at any time while in police custody. This could be by way of advice given over the telephone or directly in person. You are entitled to speak to your solicitor in private before the start of an interview. If you do not have your own legal advisor you can ask to speak to the duty solicitor.

It is important to be aware that even if you initially turn down the right to seek advice you are perfectly entitled to change your mind at any time. Consulting with a solicitor is an essential part of the justice process and their role is to protect your rights and give you advice about the law. They can also be in the room with you while you are being questioned. In the event you specifically request this then the police are required to wait for them to arrive before they question you, unless there are exceptional circumstances, such us the prevention of harm to others or a further crime being committed.

GO OFF GRID WITH TODDLERS

ANIMAL CLUB'S WINTER DATES

A community project to encourage toddlers to enjoy the outdoors takes place in Clarkston.

Anipals meets at Rouken Glen Pavillion and its winter schedule continues with a Butterfly Conservation Workshop on Monday 3 September

Off Grid Community has sessions aimed at little ones and their parents and offers the chance of playing and exploring in a real woodland space.

The new winter programme has been revealed at Anipals, a social club for young animal fans.

The toddlers are able to climb trees, make dens to hide in and take part in craft activities to stimulate their imagination and creativity. There is a mud kitchen, sand pit and plenty of water to splash about in. Parents are invited to bring along lunch for themselves and their kids. The class leaders will heat it on the outdoor fire for the full wilderness experience. The sessions take place every Monday from noon to 2pm and on Wednesdays, from 10am to noon. Classes cost £2 each and kids under 12 months go free. There

is no need to worry about the weather scuppering your plans, either, because on rainy days there will be a shelter to hide in. There is no need to book your place, just head along to the Scout Hall on Aidans Brae in Clarkston to get involved. Off Grid also offers after school clubs from four primary schools in the area. Also see www.offgridcommunity.co.uk

The Anipals group launched earlier this year in East Renfrewshire with the aim of providing a safe and fun environment for young people with a love of animals. The club runs regular activities including classes on animal care and handling, arts and crafts, and educational visits. The winter schedule is now up and running, with classes taking place every second Monday evening at Rouken Glen Pavillion. Kids aged 11-plus are invited to come along and enjoy the relaxed and inclusive atmosphere, which organisers say will help

boost confidence and self-esteem, while also fostering a child’s love of nature. Past classes have included an alpaca trek, equine therapy and World of Wings, which offered a chance to get up close to a variety of birds of prey. This month, there will be a butterfly conservation workshop. It costs £2 to attend each class from 7pm to 8.30pm. For more information, and to check upcoming activities, head over to their website www. anipalsglasgow.myfreesites.net or drop the team an email at anipalsglasgow@gmail.com.

TIPI AND TASTINGS AT WHISKY FESTIVAL

Senior Savvy with Tasnim Rehman

This month: UTI IN THE ELDERLY Crucial signs of a UTI in the elderly can be easily missed as they have all the same symptoms as a younger person however they may show NONE of the ‘normal’ signs. Instead they may experience flu-like symptoms whereas younger people will not.

A whisky festival with a difference is heading to Clarkston this month – it will be set inside a tipi in the NTS Greenbank Garden. Cask and Canvas is hosting the action-packed Tipi Whisky Festival. A spokesperson for the festival said: “This will be a fantastic day of whisky tasting, live music, retail stalls, good food and great atmosphere. “As well as our exciting whisky tasting, there will be an additional bar, which will be perfect for those guests who are looking for alternative tipples.”

can use their k upFestival ongoers logs vouchers to claim samples, choosing from a range of more pecial than 40prices... different whiskies. The spokesperson added: “This is a great opportunity to expand

your knowledge and taste of different whiskies, while enjoying a great social event in the setting of this amazing property.” Tickets are priced at £25 for the full experience, with 12 samples and a souvenir glass to take home. The “lite” experience, with eight samples, costs £21 and a non-tasting entry is £8. Kids’ tickets are priced at £4. Advance booking is required for the best deals. The event will take place on September 8 at 2pm and more information can be found on Facebook, at Cask & Canvas – The Tipi Whisky Festival.

Watch out for the Signs and Symptoms: • Painful urination • Burning while urinating • Burning sensation in genital • Lower abdominal ache or cramps • Blood in urine

• Cloudy or foulsmelling urine • Urgency or frequent need to urinate • Tenderness in back, under the ribs (kidneys) • Fevers and chills

• Nausea • Short of breath • Confusion • Dizziness • Cough • Nausea and vomiting • Fatigue

UTI and DEMENTIA UTI’s can cause worsened behaviours, practically overnight in those with dementia. Look out for: • Cognitive difficulties • Confusion • Delirium

• Hallucinations • Anxiety • Withdrawn

• Fatigue • Unusual insomnia/ excessive sleepiness

If coupled with other symptoms such as fever, nausea, cough or dizziness contact your doctor or take your loved one to hospital as soon as possible. Don’t assume it is simply the dementia ‘taking a turn for the worse’ especially if the onset is very sudden. Untreated UTI can enter the kidney and cause further illness and sepsis can occur if the infection spreads.

CIRCLE WELCOMES NEW MEMBERS

OPERA HIGHLIGHTED FOR YOUNG PEOPLE

New members are invited to the opening night of the Stamperland Wine Circle this month. Starting for a new season, the club aims to offer members a greater understanding of wine and wine-making. Members enjoy tastings, displays by leading distributors and learn about the matching of different wines to foods. There are also demonstrations on how to make wine and an opportunity to chat about making your own. The opening night is on Thursday September 6 at at 7.30pm in Clarkston Halls. The club meets on the first Thursday of each month. For more details you can contact Glyn Jones on 07943 435843 or email alfredjones123@btinternet.com.

Scottish Opera debut for a new season in Giffnock next month – and people under the age of 26 can experience the magic for just £5. Opera Highlights opens on Thursday September 20 at Eastwood Park Theatre and features an operatic playlist from much-loved and some lesser-known composers. To encourage more young people to experience opera, tickets are being discounted from the normal adult price of £14 to £5 for people aged 26 and under.

Four professional singers and a pianist will be hitting the high notes as they present the autumn season, including Mozart and Donizetti, linked together with new compositions by Scottish Opera Composer in Residence Samuel Bordoli. Anthony McReavy from East Renfrewshire Culture and Leisure said: “Opera Highlights is recommended for those

aged eight-plus so it is a great opportunity to get generations of the family together to enjoy a live performance of classical music. “Whether it’s your first taste of a classical collaboration or you have enjoyed the opera many times before, this show is sure to hit all the right notes.” The show is directed by Daisy Evans and curated by Scottish Opera’s Head of Music Derek Clark and will tour the rest of the country after Eastwood Park’s premier. Scottish Opera’s General Director, Alex Reedijk, said: “This combination of wonderful music from across the world of opera, terrific voices and a creative staging by Daisy Evans will ensure that our audiences will have an enjoyable night out!” Full tour dates and locations are available: www.scottishopera. org.uk/shows/opera-highlightsautumn-2018. CAR CLUB IN CHARITY BOOST BOOK IN WITH TOP CRIME WRITERS

A local classic, sports and retro cars club is delighted to have raised thousands of pounds for Scottish charity Revive MS Support.

A book store in Newton Mearns is delighted to be playing host to several big name authors throughout the month. Bestselling writer Val McDermid will spend an evening at Waterstones in The Avenue Shopping Centre on Thursday September 6.

AutoScots, which meets monthly in Newton Mearns, hosted a car show at the charity’s Family Fun Day this summer. The event, which was supported by all the members of the club, took place at the Riverside Museum in Glasgow and saw more than 80 classic cars on display.

AutoScots was founded in 2012 and has a membership of around 30. The club meets on the first Monday of every month at Mearns Primary School at 7.30pm.

Douglas Hunter, from the club, said: “It was a really successful event and very enjoyable.
