ROSS RIDES 10,000 MILES FOR CHARITY

A schoolteacher from Busby has taken on an impressive fundraising challenge cycling through 21 countries back home to Scotland. Ross McKechnie, who has been teaching PE in China for the last five years, is pedalling from Shanghai to Glasgow in what is the longest – and most physically demanding – bike ride of his life. The cycling so far has been tough as Ross spends 12 hours each day in the saddle and in temperatures as high as 40C.

time off the bike to speak to the Community Magazine. The former Mearns Castle High School pupil admits that he was never a “serious cyclist” before this challenge – and reveals that his longest bike tour before this was Oban to St Andrews “on a Tesco-brand bike with a camping rucksack on my back”.

(Central Asia) and I have also always dreamt about doing a long bike tour. So, after five years in China, when I was ready to come home, I thought it would be a great time to achieve both of these ambitions. “I also wanted to do something to inspire my students that I have been teaching here in China.

But keeping him motivated are the young people he has taught and the others he’s helping by raising funds for the charity, Achieve More Scotland.

He says: “Thankfully, I am a bit better prepared for this trip.” Taking on such an extreme challenge will see the 27-year-old tick off two items on his bucket list.

“If they can take some confidence and belief in themselves to follow their dreams then I think it’s a nice note to leave them on.

While in Xinjiang, the western province of China, Ross took some

He said: “I’ve always wanted to see this part of the world

was doing in some of the most deprived areas in Scotland, I immediately knew that I was going to try to raise money for this cause.” Ross, who set off on his cycle tour on July 15, will take eight months to complete the challenge. He hopes to arrive in Glasgow at Achieve More Scotland headquarters in March 2020 and aims to hand over a minimum of £10,000 (£1 for every mile cycled). The charity delivers free sport trips, volunteering and employment opportunities to young people. To track Ross, follow his updates at www.rossontheroad.co.uk. HARRIET’S GARDEN ROLE comfortable. Taking the skills learnt at Greenbank and applying them to my next year of study will be invaluable.” The 10-week placement includes a range of tasks, including weeding, hoeing, edging, grass cutting, pruning, mulching and nursery work.

Harriet, second left and inset, with garden team members Jennifer Hollywood and Scott Galloway, and Graham Duncan, right, the senior gardener

A new student summer placement role has been created at a local National Trust for Scotland garden thanks to fund-raising. Harriet Fawcett is studying an SRUC Garden Design Course and has taken on the internship at Greenbank Garden in Clarkston as a way to gain more practical experience. The funding was organised by the Friends of Greenbank Garden through a programme of lectures. Simon Jones, the NTS Gardens and Designed Landscapes Manager for Glasgow and West, said: “The student summer

placement is a way to give a student paid practical experience in a heritage garden, while ensuring that our Friends group continually and positively influences the education of young people in the practical art of gardening.” Harriet is grateful for the opportunity at Greenbank. She said: “My career goal is to work in horticulture and being in green spaces is where I feel most

Simon added: “The placement is a great thing for the college, NTS and the Friends group to do. It is a small but lasting legacy to give someone the opportunity for paid work in a historic designed landscape whilst they are studying. “This will help us in the garden with our many seasonal tasks and also gives Harriet some valuable practical skills and experience. It is a situation that all parties benefit from.” Don’t miss Simon’s talk on September 14 about the box at the Hill House and his involvement in the process. WE’RE TALKING DEBUT FOR VEGAN VENTURE ABOUT ASPENS A local wildlife group is hosting an evening talk entitled Aspen Antics. Clarkston and East Kilbride branch of the Scottish Wildlife Trust will meet in Duff Memorial Hall, Main Street, Busby, for one of their regular evening talks on September 16, at 7.30pm. Peter Livingstone, from Eadha Enterprises in Lochwinnoch, will talk about the aspen, one of Scotland's rarer native trees. He will explore its wildlife interest, conservation and folklore. Everyone is welcome and tea and coffee will be provided. The suggested donation is £3 for non-members and £2 for members. Children are free. Call 07749 774648 or see www.facebook.com/ cek.swt and https:// scottishwildlifetrust.org.uk/ local-group/clarkston-andeast-kilbride.

The owner of a new vegan street food business was delighted to make a brand launch at Rouken Glen’s Playground Festival. Katie Ritchie, who has worked in hospitality for the past 20 years, is behind VGN Street Food, which caters to festival and foodie fans looking for vegan, gluten-free and nut-free options. The 37-year-old, who also runs the kitchen in her family’s business, The Pot Still, operates VGN from a converted van. Katie said: “I’ve been working in bars, restaurants and hotels for years and I’d been keeping an eye open for my own place. Then things like the Big Feed started to appear and take off, so I thought

if I can’t find my own place, I’ll make one and take it with me. “So we sourced a converted horse box for sale then enlisted the help of my husband to change it to my specifications. It was on my driveway for months.” Katie’s experience meant that she was aware of the demand for vegan, gluten-free and nut-free food and believes her business venture is the first of its type in Scotland. She said: “I already run the kitchen in The Pot Still and make all the pies myself, so I understand the need for this type of food. We are

a small pub with an even smaller kitchen and menu but I still manage to cater extremely well for most dietary requirements.” Katie grew up in the southside of Glasgow and wanted to launch her business close to where she feels at home. She said: “I was so excited to debut at the Playground Festival. I know the area well and feel comfortable starting out there. We also took part in The Big Feed Weekend and Summer Sessions and are already looking at options for next year.” Follow VGN Street Food on Facebook for more dates.

EXAMS SUCCESS FOR PUPILS Many pupils and schools have been celebrating another year of excellent Scottish Qualifications Authority exam results this summer.

for five or more Highers, while Mearns Castle High School maintained a very high attainment at S5 level. Some 165 pupils across East Renfrewshire achieved five or more As at Higher level and 40% of pupils achieved one or more Advanced Higher awards in S6.

Attainment has continued to rise with strong Higher and Advanced Higher results, as well as a recordbreaking performance in S4.

At St Columba’s School, an independent school in Kilmacolm, Higher results were the second highest on record for the school and bucked a national attainment trend, which saw Higher results fall by two per cent.

The SQA exam results were issued on August 6 and revealed that more than threequarters of East Renfrewshire S4 pupils (78%) achieved five or more National 5 passes. The figure is three per cent more than last year and the best performance yet. In the local area, Eastwood, St Ninian's and Woodfarm high schools all achieved their best ever S4 results. Across the region, some 20% of S4 pupils achieved eight or more As at National 5 level. Williamwood High School recorded their best S5 results

Pupils achieved an increase in A to C pass rates at Higher and Advanced Higher levels with 42% of the S5 achieving 5As at Higher.

Williamwood High School pupil Amy Pollock, of Clarkston, achieved an A at National 5 and an A in Higher Dance. The 15-year-old, who lives with spine curvature, has won a place in the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland for Ballet

Councillor Paul O'Kane, East Renfrewshire Council's Convener for Education and Equalities, welcomed the results. He said: “It takes hard work and dedication to achieve such fantastic results and once again our pupils have raised the bar.”

Karen Corrie and her sons Euan (left) and Jamie walked the West Highland Way in memory of her late husband, Doug

A local woman has raised more than £2750 for a poignant charity after walking the West Highland Way with her sons. Karen Corrie, of Clarkston, completed the 96-mile walking trail in memory of her late husband, Doug, who died of Motor Neurone Disease last year. She took seven days to complete the route from Milngavie to Fort William. The family raised money for MND Scotland. Karen said: “Doug had promised our sons he would walk the West Highland Way with them when they were old enough but sadly he never got to do this. I promised him I would do the walk when he had gone – and we decided to raise funds for MND Scotland, too.

kind although they did have a couple of days of rain and some tough times with midges.

“We had Doug in the forefront of our minds as we walked. He had walked the route when he was younger and at several places, such as the newly revamped Kingshouse Hotel in Glencoe, I wondered what he would have made of it all. “We timed the walk to coincide with the first anniversary of Doug’s death.” Karen and two of her three sons, 15-year-old Jamie and nine-yearold Euan, were joined by friends and family along the way. The weather was mostly sunny and

The final day was emotional. Karen said: “We passed a ruined cottage, which features in a photo taken 30 years ago with Doug sitting there on an old trailer. I wished he could have been there with us.” She added: “I’m proud and humbled by our achievement and the support we’ve had. Many people have kindly donated to the fund-raiser, too. We have some wonderful photos and some amazing memories and it was a fitting tribute to a wonderful man, who maybe watched over us and I think would have been proud of us.” You can still donate. A parent-led community group for young adults with severe learning difficulties is keen to open its doors to new students. The CASTL (Connections After School Through Learning) Project, which is based in Giffnock, offers weekly full and half-day sessions for people over the age of 18. The post-school “college” provision has been founded by Chris McMullen after realising there was a gap in provision for school leavers in the region. Chris, who has a 19-year-old son with a severe mental disability, said: “Funding cuts for postschool provision for young people with profound mental disabilities means that there are few places to turn to. week, on a Thursday, we offer a range of activities at our base at Orchardhill Parish Church.” Students take part in a range of sessions throughout the day, including music therapy, as well as creative and visual arts. They also visit the community café run by the church where they have the opportunity to socialise. Chris says: “Socialising can be difficult for people with learning difficulties and the café is a great place for this to be nurtured.” Another popular feature is a visit from an aromatherapist for personalised sessions.

CASTL is grateful to the support and encouragement of the Isobel Mair School, in Newton Mearns, as well as parents and local businesses. The college runs from 10am to 3pm on a first-come-first-served basis. The cost for a morning or afternoon is £19 or you can book a full day. There are no geographical or age restrictions. Chris hopes to be able to expand the offering in the future. See www.castlproject.co.uk or email cmcmullencastl@gmail. com to find out more. BONKERS ABOUT THE Pamela reveals that the comics are meant to stay in a box under Olivia’s bed but “we find them all over the house”. She added: “Olivia reads them every night in her bed and usually sleeps with some of them in her bed with her.” The youngster explained that she has more than one favourite character. She said: “I have four. One of them doesn’t really go in the comics these days now, it is Ivy the Terrible. I also love Minnie the Minx, Roger the Dodger and Dennis the Menace.

Seven-year-old Olivia Gavin, from Clarkston has amassed a huge Beano collection

A Clarkston schoolgirl has become a huge fan of Britain’s longest-running children’s comic magazines, The Beano. Seven-year-old Olivia Gavin, of Clarkston, only discovered The Beano a year ago but already she has amassed a collection of more than 250 comics, two annuals and a character book.

that I had a small collection from my childhood from the 1980s, so I looked them out and she made her way through those.

Mum Pamela said: “Olivia picked up The Beano in the local shop and really enjoyed it, then she kept asking for more of the comics.

“I also found an old Beano annual. She has then added a Dennis the Menace book and annual to the collection. My husband found more on ebay from the 1990s.”

“My dad had a newsagents when I was younger and I remembered

“Roger the Dodger helps me dodge things and I love Minnie the Minx because she is funny. My mum says I am cheeky like her, well, I suppose I am a little bit! And I like Dennis the Menace because he is the main character.” Last year, The Beano, which is published by Dundee-based DC Thomson, celebrated its 80th anniversary.

NUNS ON THE RUN FOR SHOW

The cast of a forthcoming musical took part in a “nun run” to promote the event this month. A group from Clarkston-based Eros Musical Society set off from the East Kilbride Village Theatre to run to East Kilbride Shopping Centre on August 17 decked out in nuns’ habits. They got into character ahead of the society’s latest production, Sister Act, which will be on stage at the theatre from September 17 to 21. Maureen Driscoll, Eros president, said: “It was just a bit of fun really, to promote our show and let people know that it’s happening. Some of our friends have also sponsored us to help raise funds for our club.”

Sister Act is based on the 1992 hit film. Maureen said: "It’s a great show, sometimes truly moving and other times really funny, with amazing dancing and very challenging six-part harmony for our chorus to get stuck into. “It will be great fun to watch, too.” The show takes place at 7.30pm from September 17 to 21, with an extra matinee on the 21st at 2.30pm. Tickets are available from www.sllcboxoffice.co.uk or the Theatre Box Office on 01355 261000. Eros Musical Society can also be found on Facebook.

On the Tuesday, it happens again in another skyscraper and the following day, a third lift plunges to the bottom. Elevator Pitch explores what happens in New York following the tragedies. MAGICAL FUN AT GARDEN FESTIVAL

What's Up Doc? with Dr Nick Dunn

This month: HERD INSTINCT…

A local garden has created an enchanting event for children this month. Greenbank Garden in Clarkston is hosting The Elf and Faery Festival from September 27 to 30. There will be a host of activities for boys and girls. Firstly, children can discover their faery or elf name, before they work through activity challenge sheets. They can also follow a faery trail in the gardens, create a magic wand and make some special faery/elf slime, before venturing into the woodland to forage for all the items they need to host an elf and faery tea party. The Elf and Faery Festival runs from 11am to 4pm each day, and families can drop in at any time.

Did you know that Greenbank Garden is home to more than 3,600 named species of plants? And that Greenbank House dates back to the 1760s when it was built for tobacco merchant Robert Allason? Find out this and more over the festival weekend. Entry to the festival is £3 per child, plus normal garden admission fee (£18.50 for a family and £12.50 for one-adult family. Members of the National Trust for Scotland enjoy free entry). See www.nts.org.uk/visit/ places/greenbank-garden

Recently the UK lost its “measles-free” status which had been given by the World Health Organisation three years ago. 231 new cases were confirmed between January and March 2019. Measles is a very infectious viral rash which can potentially infect 15 others from one person, simply through small droplets in the air. Usually causing cold symptoms and fever, in babies or the frail it can cause pneumonia or brain damage, rarely leading to death. It caused many deaths before a vaccine for it was first produced in 1968. Measles is now more common in Europe than ever before in the past 10 years, due to falling

vaccination numbers, and there is a high risk of it coming into Scotland and spreading rapidly. “Herd immunity” – with a target 95% vaccinated (Scotland is 93%) – significantly reduces the risk of the most vulnerable in the community being infected and having complications. For this to work everyone needs to support vaccination, however this was undermined a few years ago by campaigners suggesting research showed a link between autism and MMR vaccine, which was not the case. Scotland has one of the best vaccination rates in Europe, but we should keep striving for better!

SAX PLAYER LEADS RECITAL The programme will feature four pieces, covering a range of music written from 1860 to 2017, starting with Jules Demersseman's Fantasy on an Original Theme – one of the first pieces of music written for the saxophone. Two of the pieces are also saxophone concertos, heard in arrangements that condense the accompaniment from a full orchestra to just a handful of musicians.

Richard Scholfield will lead an evening recital this month in Giffnock South Parish Church

A former pupil of Williamwood High School and a promising young saxophonist will lead an evening recital this month. Richard Scholfield, of Clarkston, is completing his Masters degree at The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and the recital is the final part of his studies. On Thursday September 12 at 7:30pm in Giffnock South Parish Church, the award-winning young saxophonist will be accompanied

by the Resol String Quartet, saxophone quintet and piano. He said: “I'm very excited to be able to perform in the local community, which is always friendly and supportive, and I am looking forward to being joined on stage by colleagues and teachers from the RCS as well.”

Glazunov's deeply romantic Concerto for Saxophone will be performed with saxophone and string quartet, while Jacob ter Velhuis' minimalistic and jazz/rock-inspired Tallahatchie Concerto will be accompanied by a quintet of saxophones and piano. These arrangements allow the concerts to take place in a more intimate chamber music setting, giving the musicians a chance to make a closer connection between the accompaniment and the soloist. Tickets are priced at £8, including a glass of wine at the interval, and are available from the church office on 0141 638 2599, or on the door on the night.

September 2019 | Wedding Feature

So much has

Changed for the Big Day

As one mum commented on mumsnet: “My godmother, who married in the eighties, bought her dress the week before, from Laura Ashley and there were no hen dos or stag dos."

So much has changed with weddings over the years. It was back in the early 70s when this reporter got wed (writes Nick Cowie.) Things were so much simpler then.

Things inevitably have moved on from these days and now your average wedding is a much bigger affair. One of the most important aspects of any wedding day is selecting the right reception venue, remember it can be much simpler to start and finish locally. This area not only has some of the best venues in the country but some of the very best services to guarantee a great day, from experienced caterers and florists to beauty specialists and photographers all at hand to help your day go smoothly.

Maybe it’s because there weren’t as many options as there are today. The planning of the wedding was usually left to the mother of the bride.

Although in our case the bride and bridesmaids opted for the floaty fashions of the day, which incidentally still look fantastic in the photos.

Going back to the 70s, people just didn’t have the huge lavish dos which are now common.

Themes and the overwhelming options of colour didn’t present a problem back then as a majority of weddings used white as the colour.

After the church, it was a meal at a local hotel, then back to the bride’s If you are going for a big do one parents or sometimes a village hall planner’s tip is to remember that where there’d be sandwiches, a the dream of perfect summer day barrel of beer and in the tradition 1 especially 21/08/2019 of the day EW_CommunityMagazine_August2019_95x133_BLEED.pdf a display of the wedding is far from guaranteedin the West of Scotland. presents.

Wedding Feature | September 2019

If you opt for a winter wedding, due to fewer bookings, there can be major savings. If a winter wedding is planned, this may swing the decision towards a venue with dramatic features such as a sweeping staircase, feature wall or elegant fireplace, these will provide a lovely backdrop for pictures. In spring or summer, look for colourful gardens, waterfront views or an attractive gazebo and let the natural beauty of the great outdoors enhance your photographs, having great photos for social media is now a big motivator, figures show that three in ten say how their wedding looked on instagram was one of their prime wedding concerns. ART FROM THE HEART A group of Sunday painters is inviting new artists to come along to enjoy creating art with others. The Wee Art Studio sessions take place on the first Sunday of each month, any time from noon to 3pm. Artists should bring their own materials and equipment although some boards and easels will be available. Many artists say how much they benefit from working in

a beautiful and inspirational space. Refreshments are available and the cost is £8, payable on the day. It is a good idea to phone or email in advance to check space availability. This month the session is on September 1. See www.theweeartstudio.co.uk.

This month: POWERS OF ATTORNEY A Power of Attorney is a written document which gives power to a chosen trusted friend, family member or professional advisor, to attend to our affairs in our steads. This may be useful if the granter is elderly, infirm or is otherwise disabled to the extent that they are unable to get out and about to deal with their affairs. To be able to grant a Power of Attorney, one must have mental capacity. If there is no Power of Attorney in place before one

loses mental capacity, an application for Guardianship requires to be made at the Sheriff Court. Due to stretched resources in the Local Authority, applications can take many months to conclude and until then, no one is able to deal with the incapacitated adult's affairs. Applications for Guardianship can also be contested by interested parties. Just like making a will, having a Power of Attorney in place, is one of life’s legal essentials.

CBT focus on weight

A

Cognitive Behavioural Therapist has launched a series of weight management events in Newton Mearns.

The one-day courses take place in Parklands Hotel and Country Club, Ayr Road, and focus on utilising Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) to lose and manage weight. Andrew Kiani, who has recently retired from the Royal Air Force, brings many years of experience in the mental health industry, working with military personnel and civilian clients, to the events.

Andrew Kiani, brings many years of experience in the mental health industry

He said: “The sessions are for people who feel defeated by their apparent inability to lose weight and keep it off. CBT has an excellent track record of success when applied to weight

management and can help people to manage cravings, to say no to the wrong foods and to prioritise an individual’s own health and well-being.

During the inaugural workshop in May, participant Gordon said: “I learned so much. Andy explains what can be a complicated and emotional subject in such a way that I felt at ease throughout the session. I feel in a great place to start my CBT weight loss journey.”

“With an evidence-based cognitive behavioural approach you can start to take back control by increasing your awareness and understanding of your relationship with food, learn how your thinking influences your decisions and realise why we get stuck in unhealthy patterns of behaviour.”

Andy is keen to introduce the CBT approach to a wider audience. He said: “With over a decade developing and facilitating CBT focused weight management groups for military personnel and civilians, I feel passionate about introducing this approach to a more people.”

Rachel said: “We had a great time at this year’s Spanish summer classes thanks to everyone who came along and thanks the volunteers who helped out. “I’m delighted we were able to raise £2237.50 through donations from the students at my adult Spanish class and from Language for Fun. A fundraising initiative has raised more than £2200 to support a school in Uganda, while inspiring youngsters to learn a new language. Rachel Mercedes, of Waterfoot, hosted the fundraising week, teaching Spanish to children at Cartsbridge Church in Busby. Children were led through a week with a packed programme of activities to help them learn Spanish through songs, games and arts and crafts, led by Rachel and a group of volunteers.

The children demonstrated their learning, with a Spanish performance for their families on the final day of the summer camp. The funds were donated to charity Change Tomorrow, which was founded by Newton Mearns couple Jonny and Dana Aird. The money will help the

The Summer holidays gone, busy family events including visiting your ageing loved ones come to an end. But before you get back into busy everyday routines, think, did you notice any changes in your loved ones before you left? Common threats to a senior's independence: 1 PAIN. Complain of a bad back or aches that slow down or prevent everyday tasks? 2 MEMORY. Trouble recalling events from that same morning. Told you the same story repeatedly? 3 HOUSEKEEPING. Does the house look more unkept than usual? 4 MEDICATION. Are the appropriate pills taken at mealtimes or before bed?

5 SAFETY. If loved ones find it difficult to walk do they need assistance or a walking aid? 6 DEPRESSION. If you see any hints of irritability, sadness, sleep difficulty this could be signs of depression. 7 SOCIAL ENGAGEMENT. Ask your loved ones to tell you about their friends. Resistance to socialising can eventually cause isolation.

LOCAL OPTICIAN CELEBRATES TWO SUCCESSFUL YEARS A LOCAL opticians is inviting customers to drop in and help celebrate its second birthday. Specsavers in Newton Mearns is marking its two-year anniversary at The Avenue Shopping Centre on Saturday 7th September. To mark this occasion, the store will be welcoming shoppers and selling sweet treats, with all proceeds going towards The Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB). RNIB is the UK’s leading charity supporting blind and partially sighted people. The team has an array of fun activities planned on the day, with ‘pin the glasses on the dog’ for the children. This state-of-the-art store has been providing the residents of Newton Mearns with first-class optical and audiology services, with two test rooms featuring the latest technology and equipment as well as advanced audiology services, thanks to a dedicated hearing centre in store. Specsavers Newton Mearns has demonstrated its commitment to the town through investment to the tune of £250,000. It offers customers a free examination using cutting-edge OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography) equipment. This allows the optician to look deeper into the eyes than ever before and has the ability to detect treatable eye

conditions, including the early detection of glaucoma. Emma Robb, store director at Specsavers Newton Mearns, says: “It is a really exciting time for us marking our second year in business – and what a successful two years it has been. “We wouldn’t be where we are without all the customers who trust us with their eye and ear health. I want to thank each and every one of them for helping make the store the success story it is today and we hope to welcome more new faces in the future. “I also want to extend an extra special thank you to all of the valued staff members for their hard work and dedication. Their commitment and passion is truly exceptional.” Specsavers Newton Mearns

employs fifteen staff members and is proud to invest in their continued career development. Optical consultant Angelicia Barnes has been working through a series of qualifications to develop her career over the past two years, and Kelsey Cairns joined the team with no optical experience and has up-skilled to become the store’s Contact Lens Supervisor. Meanwhile, store manager Nishma Patel is undertaking Specsavers’ internal development programme which could ultimately pave the way for her to become a store director in the future. Staff training also extends beyond career development – with other programmes available that ultimately benefit the customer. One such scheme, recently

undertaken by optical consultant Liz Black, is Dementia Friends – an initiative that provides training that helps people in the local community to make a positive difference to people living with dementia. Store director Emma adds: “This is just one example of our commitment to doing all we can to help all customers, including those who may need a little extra support. “We’re so proud to be an integral part of the community here in Newton Mearns and this birthday marks the second of many. “We would encourage anyone who wants to find out more about our services, or who wants to check out the superb range of specs available for all tastes and budgets, to pay us a visit.”

To book an appointment for an eye examination, visit www.specsavers.co.uk/stores/newtonmearns or call the store on 0141 639 4897

Keen photographers are invited to join a special taster session this month to learn how to capture pictures of the night sky. The three-hour Photography Experiences – Astrophotography course will be held at Whitelee Wind Farm, Moor Road, near Eaglesham, on Friday September 27 from 8pm. Experienced photographer Stuart Dreghorn, of Glasgow southsidebased Dreghorn Photography will lead the course, which costs £40. Guided walk-and-talk sessions take place in September and October and aim to shine a light on three popular areas in East Renfrewshire, Netherlee, Giffnock and Eaglesham.
