Thanakorn Kuawong Managing Director, Yaang Come Spa

“Chiang Mai has so many interesting things, both as tourist attractions and in terms of hospitality. Because the town is not too large, you can quickly visit most of the main temples, go down Walking Street, see museums and fresh markets, all within 15-20 minutes of each other. “If you want to visit natural attractions, just drive outside the city for no more than an hour. You also have the choice of many types of accommodation: 5-star hotels, chain hotels or affordably priced guest houses. That’s not to mention all the places for Thai massage, spas, shopping centers and local markets. I suggest that visitors to Chiang Mai take time to go shopping, especially at the Walking Streets on Saturdays and Sundays. And don’t forget to sample some of our local foods. The restaurant I especially recommend is Ban Rai Yam Yen, because of its authentic northern cuisine.”

Chiang Mai is a great city for exploring, and nowhere more so than around the Old Quarter inside the moat. There are temples, marketplaces, backstreets, shops, cafÊs, everything for a fun day out. So let’s get up early tomorrow morning and enjoy a healthy stealthy walk. This route is about 4-5 km winding around the backstreets from the South Gate (Pratu Chiang Mai) to the North Gate (Pratu Chang Phuak). So, get your training shoes on and join the fun!

32

South Gate to North Gate: A Walking Tour

33

1. Chiang Mai Gate Market: What better way to start the day than watching Buddhist monks collect alms as you sit and enjoy a pot of tea and a light breakfast? You can watch the market wake up from 6am till 8am. It has local products, fruit, grilled meats, noodle stalls and even a small café bistro. Sit in the square and try a traditional Thai breakfast, such as khao tom (rice soup) or jock (rice porridge). Or start the day with a coffee and a pan-fried egg. If you’re feeling like something spicy, ask for kanom jeen nam ngiaw, which is a steaming bowl of rice noodles with spicy pork sauce. Top Tip: A small alley behind the market (Phra Pokklao Soi 2) has roadside stalls selling fruit, vegetables, forest products and rare herbal medicines.

2. Buddhist temples around

Chiang Mai Gate Market. There are some beautiful ancient temples and local artisan communities concentrated around here, starting with Wat Puak Tam which is a centre for brass work, one of this city’s most inimitable ancient crafts. Then head for Wat Chedlin and see its old ponds. Walk up Ratchamanka Soi 6 and you’ll discover the hidden temple of Wat Phra Jao Mangrai, which houses a 700-yearold Buddha image. Top Tip: Observe the brass craftsmen at work near Wat Puak Tam at Bumrungburi Soi 1.

3. Wat Chedi Luang: Now that you’ve seen some small Buddhist temples, it’s time to unveil the massive masterpiece that is Wat Chedi Luang. It is situated between Ratchamanka and Phra Pokklao roads, and is easily visible from afar due to its great 14th-century pagoda, surrounded by statues of elephants. The upper tier of the pagoda is still in ruins; it was destroyed by an earthquake in 1545. If you have time, pop in to the Coin Museum nearby (on Ratchdamnoen Road), where you can witness the bizarre shapes and styles of Siamese money over the years. Top Tip: In front of Wat Chedi Luang is a small shrine that hosts the Inthakin City Pillar, which is the original foundation post of the city. It sits under an enormous rubber tree. 34

4. Brunchtime or Lunchtime?

Chiang Mai street eats are the best, some would say, in the world. For just a light bite, you can get a delicious dish for less than 50 baht. Head down Intrawarorot Road (behind Three Kings Monument) and you’ll discover a line of street stalls and eateries serving up some tasty quick meals. Kow mun gai (steamed chicken with rice) is a favourite, as is satay chicken. Yong Tau Foo is a Hakka Chinese soup served with noodles, pork and fish balls. Other options are: curried noodle soup or rice crispy pork. If you can manage it, finish your meal with a super-sweet Thai dessert or coconut ice cream. Top Tip: Kafe 155 sits at the four-way corner overlooking Three Kings Monument. It’s a great spot for a coffee and some people-watching.

5. Museum Tour: Time to check out some northern Thai culture, and what better way than by walking around the city’s museums? Choose from: Chiang Mai City Arts and Cultural Center (Closed for renovation at time of writing); Lanna Folk Museum; and Chiang Mai Historical Center. All are located close to Three Kings Monument. Each offers some insight into the fascinating history and traditions of this region. Top Tip: You will see local people praying to the Three Kings statue as you sit in the plaza. Of the three kings, King Mengrai is the most revered; he was the founder of Chiang Mai city in 1296 AD.

7. Streetside Dinner at Chang Phuak Gate: After what has been a long walk or cycle, it’s time to reward yourself with a beer or dinner (or both). From Chang Phuak Gate, you should head outside the moat and you’ll see a long line of street food diners. Take a seat and choose from many sizzling dishes: stewed pork leg on rice is popular, as is stir-fried sukiyaki, somtam (spicy papaya salad), and spicy egg noodles. Top Tip: Round off your meal with a delicious Thai dessert: Ask for sticky rice with either mango or durian; or water chestnut in coconut milk. They’re lipsmackingly good!

Backstreets:

After visiting the museums, you’re ready for a quick zigzag down some of the Old Town backstreets, known in Thai as soi. Head along Singharat Soi 4, where you’ll encounter some lush trees and flowers such as jasmine and bougainvillea along the street. Top Tip: Some of Chiang Mai’s most talented graffiti artists have added colour to the walls along Singharat Soi 4, near the junction of Singharat Road.

Wat Chedi Luang

Made to

Measure

38

Chiang Mai is a tourist city that is full of natural and cultural attractions, but another thing that makes it so popular with visitors is its superb shopping options. We have everything from handicrafts to furniture and a wide range of fabrics and textiles. Perhaps one of the busiest industries in the city is tailoring. If you are here for at least two or three days, maybe you should think about getting a tailor-made suit or a silken dress

for a special occasion. Chiang Mai has some of the most distinguished tailors in the country. One such tailor shop that does a bustling trade at the city’s famous Night Bazaar is Fashion King. It has been here for some 36 years, and its owner, Mr Frank Sethi, took some time from measuring waists and inside legs to speak to Guidelines Travel.

39

Question: Who are the main customers for tailor-made clothes at Fashion King? Answer: The majority of our customers are foreigners and they come from all corners of the world. We are experts in manufacturing custom-made clothing for both ladies and gents: suits, shirts, trousers, dresses, wedding dresses, etc. We are well organised, well equipped, well established, and well recognised for our hospitality and sincerity. We are quite unique in that we can offer customers a certificate of authenticity for the materials they purchase. Furthermore, clients can request repairs or alterations to their clothes anytime within 12 months. These are the small things that encourage customers. I believe that, of the 50 or so tailors around here, we are second to none.

Q: So, how should I choose a suit or dress and how long will it take to make? A: Most shops in Chiang Mai will tailor-make whatever you choose, whether a wedding dress or three-piece suit or trousers or a sari. The time depends on the skills of the tailor in that shop. For us, we have a work force of 18 tailors whose skills have been passed down from generation to generation. So we take about three days for one full suit, and that includes a day for trying it on and making any last-minute adjustments. Of course, if you order several items it will take longer. As for the skills of each tailor, Chiang Mai is in a traditional period. The old tailors are locals, but in the time of our fathers’ generation there were many cloth merchants from Burma, India and Nepal who had come here to set up shop. Nowadays, the skilled local tailors are gradually retiring, but hopefully some of their children will inherit the talent and continue the business.

40

Q: So how does a customer know beforehand the quality of any tailor shop? A: For any tailoring business that focuses on tourists, customers must consider carefully the price and quality. You must realise that if you are using this service once and then returning to your country, you won’t have the chance to bring your clothes back to the shop for repairs or alterations. That’s why you have to get it right first time. Some tailor shops have exploited foreign customers, knowing that they will probably never see them again. These types of businesses are really traders, not tailors. I’m sure this is the same around the world, not only in Thailand. So, you should think carefully about what you want, and then examine the quality of the fabric. Also, you should compare materials and prices at a few stores before making a decision.

Q: So, we have to trust the tailor to a large extent? A: You should be assured by the tailor that his shop’s fabrics and materials are genuine and top quality. For me, I hold to the Japanese principle that ‘When you sell your first car, it does not mean you are trustworthy. It is when you sell a second and third car to that same client then we can see.’ To me, this means that after we sell a suit to a customer, we expect they will tell their friends and spread the word. I’m totally confident in this technique. Fashion King already has the reputation for being honest and reliable; and I believe we are the trendsetters in Chiang Mai when it comes to new fashions and styles. If you are looking for tailor-made clothes, check online and read the reviews, study the information available, and reconfirm everything thoroughly with the tailor before making a final decision. Fashion King is the oldest tailor shop in Chiang Mai. It is located in Kalare Night Bazaar. Check it out on: www.fashionkingchiangmai.com

WWW.FASHIONKINGCHIANGMAI. Land of Smiles Did you know that Thailand has become something of a medical hub in recent years? That’s right – visitors are not just coming here for the beaches and temples and nightlife, many stay long enough to have operations and cosmetic work done that would otherwise costs thousands of dollars in their home countries.
