Welcome to Chiang Mai in Springtime, MASS TRANSIT SERVICES February is the probably the last month of what we call “winter”. But don’t take our word for it – chat with the locals; it seems everyone has an opinion about the changing seasons these days! Nonetheless, this is a great time of year to enjoy the outdoors and nature – the weather is cool but rarely rainy, and so many indigenous flowers and plants are in bloom. February is also a month of festivals: see inside the magazine for a list of everything that’s going on – Flower festival, Valentine’s celebrations, Jazz festival, hot-air balloons, strawberry fairs, so much to do – and such little time to do it. Enjoy!
Airport taxi to anywhere downtown is 150 baht. For rides outside the ‘metropolis’: 50 baht as soon as you get in the cab, then 50 baht for the first two kilometres, and 10 baht per km thereafter. If you want to go somewhere outside the city, you will have to check the chart at the airport taxi counters (it’s usually 180 to 350 baht). 14
Airport Shuttle Bus (air-conditioned van) is available at Gate 9. Just 40 baht per person. Route 1: Airport–Central Kad Suan Kaew– Huay Kaew Road – Chiang Mai University; Route 2: Airport– Night Bazaar. Shuttles run 7am–9.30pm Shared red pick-up trucks (known as song-taew) are sometimes waiting at the exits or outside the airport. Price is about 40-60 baht.
There are about 2,000 Red Cabs (pick-ups or song-taew) available throughout the city. Fixed Route Red Cabs: From 15 baht. Check all five routes on mobile application: CMTRANSIT (available both IOS and Android gadgets) White Cabs (No.12) available in Chiang Mai downtown only. Price is 15 baht. Long time no see, Justin! This new album, Man of the Woods, is entirely composed and produced by Timberlake himself. The first track is “Filthy”, which has been a big hit at the beginning of this year. Album goes on sale from February 2.
Strawberry Festival,Samoeng District February 9–11
It’s a case of strawberry fields forever at this time of year as the juicy fruit comes into season in the hilly region of Samoeng, about an hour’s drive west of Chiang Mai. So, if you love the taste of strawberries and wish to experience a traditional Thai village fair, this is the place to come. Strawberries are for sale at many different stalls – fresh, dried, jam, juice and wine, you name it!
Chiang Mai Flower Festival February 4
One of the highlights of the season in Chiang Mai is the annual Flower Festival, which is held in front of Suan Buak Had Park and along Arak Road. Apart from a kaleidoscope of flowers and plants (and endless selfie opportunities), the fair features a floral parade on floats, a beauty contest, live music, a thousand woks of sizzling street food, and lots of fun for all the family.

Dok Khamtai Festival, Phayao Province February 13–14 Welcome to Valentine’s Day at this local celebration with arguably the country’s most famous beauty pageant. It’s the Dok Khamtai Festival in Phayao Province. Prepare to be enchanted by a parade of beautiful girls, while other locals dress up in traditional Thai costume.
Chinese New Year, Kad Luang (Chiang Mai’s ‘Chinatown’) February 16–17 For Chinese New Year, look no further than Warorot market behind Thapae Road, alongside the Ping River. This is known as Kad Luang, meaning “Big market”, and it has been the hub of the Chinese community in this city for centuries. You’ll catch all manner of things at the New Year activities, including Chinese opera, dragon parades and fireworks.

Black Panther February 15 International Balloon Fiesta 2018 February 14 Hot-air balloons will dominate the horizon and the skies during this fun-filled festival in Chiang Rai – at the wonderfully ambient Singha Park. The highlight is certainly the photogenic scene of numerous hot - air balloonsfloating up to the sky at sunrise.
Marvel is probably one of the most hardworking studios and is always releasing blockbuster movies for its adoring fans around the world. This year, Marvel has brought out the story of Wakanda or the Black Panther. It will be interesting to see how closely this production is linked to the original tale. Black Panther will screen at cinemas around Chiang Mai, starting 15 February. Check online for details. 17
“In my opinion, Chiang Mai is a perfect place. Everything you need is here, from nature and scenery to modern technology. All it’s all located in a relatively small town which you can roam around within an hour. If you are planning a visit to Chiang Mai, I would first suggest a trip up the hill to Doi Suthep. It’s very much a sacred place and is considered to be at the heart of Lanna region’s religious and spiritual life. You can take in some stunning views of the city, see beautiful Buddhist architecture, and shop for hilltribe souvenirs. Another attraction is the Old City, especially the Moon Muang and Pratu Chiang Mai areas, where you can observe local communities, markets and lifestyles. For food and bakery, I would recommend Kitchen Hut. February Following all the New Year celebrations, it’s time to think about getting up into the mountains to absorb the joys of nature, as well as seeking out interesting activities to do around town. Guidelines Travel would like to take this chance to offer a few suggestions:

1. Strawberries & Flowers Two annual festivals stand out as highlights of the cool season. We endured a long rainy spell late last year, but the upshot is that the rainforest is replenished and the valleys are abundant in crops. One of the first fruits to ripen is the strawberry, a new fruit to northern Thailand, but one which we all love. The town of Samoeng, about an hour’s drive from Chiang Mai, is the host of a colourful Strawberry Fair. This year it takes place on 9-12 February. You can get there by motorbike or red cab (songtaew). It’s worth the drive and you’ll pass several jungle sites and attractions on the way, such as the Botanical Garden, X-Center, monkey farm, snake farm and elephant camps. The other great charm for those with a horticultural eye is the Flower Festival, which is scheduled for 2-4 February at Suan Buak Had Park in the southwest corner of the moat. Aside from the displays of beautiful flowers, there are floats, a parade, beauty contest, live music and mucho entertainment.

2. Quirky Cuisine Travelling the world, you get to sample many fine culinary delights. But arguably, Chiang Mai is one of the greatest cities on the planet for good food. And it’s certainly some of the best value-for-money dining you’ll ever do. This year, there has been a striking phenomenon in that the famous Thai Street Food stalls have been widely cleaned up and upgraded to better serve foreign visitors. For as little as 30 baht (US$1), you can savour a freshly prepared piping hot chilli-infested rice n curry dish, noodles, barbecued pork or squid, and much more. We have also seen a phenomenal amount of cafes and bistros open in recent years, many of which serve their own home blend of Northern Thai highland coffee. The other noticeable trend has been towards organic fruit and vegetables. More and more consumers nowadays demand pesticide-free food and the independent farmers of Chiang Mai have responded. There are now half a dozen good organic markets operating around the city.

3. Spa-tacular! Never say never to a good Thai massage or a day at the spa. It will refresh and relax you, and clean your pores. Thailand is of course famous for massage, and Chiang Mai has dozens or even hundreds of reputable massage centers, as well as a host of new award-winning spas.
4. Arts, Crafts & Museums This could be the year that Chiang Mai breaks through as a regional hub for the arts. It has already been recognised time and gain as a “cool” and arty city. The opening of the MAIIAM contemporary art center over a year ago helped put it further onto the map. We also have a number of state-run museums that are interesting for tourists. One of those is Chiang Mai City
Arts and Cultural Center, which just finished a period of renovation. (Read review on Page XX) Many of the art galleries feature well-known artists and change their exhibitions every month. We should also recommend you visit some handicraft fairs while you are here; Nimmanhaemin Road frequently hosts street fairs.
5. Dedicated If you want to stay in Chiang Mai for a longer period, it is relatively easy to get a long-stay visa. While you enjoy Chiang Mai’s easy cost of living, you might also want to enroll in Thai language classes or even Thai boxing. There are also Thai boxing classes for children. Another very popular option is yoga and meditation. Chiang Mai has dozen of centers. Perhaps one of the more popular pastimes is learning Thai cooking – mastering the art of this special spicy cuisine. You can enroll just for a day at one of the many cooking schools around the city center. 33

2.美食美酒 品尝美食是旅行中最不能错过的环节，也许通过“吃”来 了解当地人的生活，才是最直接和最真实的体验。清迈这个地方 不靠海，也不没有太过丰裕的物产资源，而正是这种对外界充满 无限幻想的地方，人们捯饬出了千奇百怪的美食，每一种搭配和 吃法都是那样的“艺术”。近些年大部分街头美食都集中到了清 迈城区，商家也更加注重食材的安全卫生，尽量选择有机蔬菜和

3. SPA 和按摩 除了“吃”，清迈的SPA水疗按摩也很有 名，相较于曼谷芭提雅的快节奏，清迈似乎更适合 卸下心防，来一次真正的放松水疗之旅。从路边仅 八十泰铢的足底按摩到专业的SPA高级水疗，清迈 都能给你。如果你是瑜伽爱好者，我想清迈也完全 不会让你失望。
4.艺术、手工艺品、博物馆 博物馆是能让我们这些后辈们读懂历史的神 秘宝库，艺术是我们能触碰到的“精神穿越”， 而“手工艺品”是这份精神文化的再生与繁衍。这 三者之间的关系，在清迈得到了最完美的诠释。近 些年泰北的多处艺术馆都得到了游客的追捧，例如 清莱的“白庙”艺术和“黑屋”博物馆，清迈的 MAIIAM现代艺术馆，以及清迈近期历经修缮重新 开放的清迈文化艺术中心。走出陈列中的艺术，你 会发现清迈街头“艺术”更加赏心悦目。
5.短期游学 如果你已经不能像孩子一样参加英文夏令 营，那你可以在来清迈参加短期外语游学；就算你 连厨房都没进过，在清迈你可以参加烹饪课程；假 如你从小就有搏击梦但一直没实现，那你可以参加 清迈泰拳短期训练；如果你确定需要全身心的投入 瑜伽中，你在清迈完全可以做到；如果你需要静一 静，清迈的国际禅修班应该会适合你。

Chiang Mai Museum Re Opens and Inspires When you visit a historical city anywhere in the world, one of the best places to get an understanding of the culture is at the local museums. Last month the Chiang Mai City Arts and Cultural Center was reopened after a long period of renovations, and now hosts a new range of themes that will inspire and educate all who come by.

This is the principal venue to lean about Chiang Mai’s history, customs, lifestyle, arts and culture. Under its new “Discover the Origins of Chiang Mai’s Identity” exhibition, this impressive museum now consists of 14 exhibition rooms that take you through an interactive chronology of Chiang Mai. Using models and narration, this is a great place for kids to absorb historical knowledge. In fact, it’s a great day out for all the family. Starting from the Chiang Mai Today Room, right though to a colourful look at Highland Peoples, this exhibition is the quintessential guide to the history of our fair city. 39
Chiang Mai Today This exhibit room welcomes you with a video presentation set in a mini-theater. It introduces an overview of Chiang Mai city that combines the traditions and culture and quickly brings you up to speed with examples of contemporary life in the northern Thai region.
Before Becoming Chiang Mai City The prehistoric civilization that evolved into the land we now call Lanna has left behind relics of settlement and tools which help illustrate the way of life early man adopted here thousands of years ago.

Two Civilizations
Kings of Chiang Mai
In the 13th century, King Mengrai established Chiang Rai City or Yonok Nakorn in the Kok River Basin. He then moved south and captured Haripunchai (now Lamphun) along the Ping River. At that time, it was the most prosperous center of the Mon kingdom, and it became the foundation for the Lanna kingdom.
This room is on the second floor in the large hall. The display focuses on the past rulers and governors of Chiang Mai, from the time that King Kawila expelled Burmese invaders from the city and set about restoring it to its greatness. The exhibition includes a clever look at the generations of people who made their livelihoods along the banks of the Ping River.
Establishing a City This room is very distinctive because it explains the founding of Chiang Mai City under auspicious circumstances. The city plan was designed based on the belief that the creation of the town represented the birth of a human body. Many different religious beliefs were adopted, including astrology. Chiang Mai was built as a fortress in a square formation, unique in the region in that era.
People of Chiang Mai City This is perhaps the highlight of the tour because it simulates the lifestyles of a variety of local people. You can walk alongside shops, houses, traditional markets, and see artisans and smiths at work. The exhibition describes their stories through sculptured models and soundtrack.
The Highland Peoples Chiang Mai in the Past 100 Years The forest concessions, the railway construction, the commercial prosperity and the change of government caused Chiang Mai City to grow and change rapidly over the past 100 years.
The Finer Things of Chiang Mai Identity, culture, tradition, ritual and crafts evolved alongside the settlements and architecture that reflect the glory of Chiang Mai.
The last room is dedicated to the hilltribe peoples who have settled in the mountainous jungle passes and valleys in Chiang Mai province. These ethnic groups have their own way of life and culture, but also live harmoniously alongside the Thais. The highland people are considered an important element of Chiang Mai’s cultural diversity.

百年历史经典传承 一百年的坚持与回归 过去的莽荒与刀耕火种，是人与自然的抗争与 相互妥协，当人们失去森林失去自然的庇护，必将惨 遭自然的回击。用一百年的时间恢复完整的森林植 被，用南北贯穿的火车线路带动有序的经济发展，看 似不变，但回望百年前的清迈，唯有感叹光阴似箭。

Chiang Mai Flower Festival 2018 2月2日至4日，一年一度的清迈鲜花节即将在塔 佩门广场（ThaPae Gate）及博汉公园（BuakHaat Public Park）隆重举办，从古城西门（松达门）一直到南门 （松蓬门）两边都搭满架子摆满鲜花，来参展的除了花 商、花农的苗圃展区，公园里的大型花卉雕塑，还有美 食小吃一条街，同期举行的活动还有鲜花小姐评选和大 型花车游行。

Kad Luang Florist Market 唐人街花市位于瓦洛洛市场后面，靠近滨河岸边 的街区，泰国人有鲜花礼佛的习俗，来到花市最抢眼的 是万寿菊、莲花和茉莉，商贩把茉莉花串成小串儿，搭 配香气逼人的缅桂花，这是泰国人对外宾最高规格的见 面礼。在整条街都是鲜花的街区，随便买一束花就能心 满意足，即便艳阳高照也抵挡不住心中的一丝清凉。
那些清迈的樱花谷 Sakura in Chiang Mai
清迈樱花的花期大概在每年的一二月，泰国人很 自豪，不用去到日本，在清迈就能体验到壮观烂漫的樱 花盛宴。 1、坤昌阡 Khun Chang Kian 坤昌阡位于素贴山上面的苗族村落，每到这个季 节，道路两旁的樱花竞相开放，形成了万众瞩目的樱花 谷。 How to go? 可以自驾车或者包车前往，人少的话可以到清迈 大学站参加散团，一路上会经过双龙寺 (WatPhra That DoiSuthep) ，双龙寺前面也可以单独乘坐千万坤昌阡 Khun Chang Kian的双条车，具体各个起点的费用不 同，以当地价格为准。 2、清迈安康山 Doi Angkhang 距离清迈市区约160公里的安康山，也是极佳的 赏花胜地。这是一处靠近泰缅边境的山脉，空气清新自 然，民风淳朴，安康山的道路两旁也种满了大量樱花 树，清迈的樱花属于野生喜马拉雅品种，不同于日本的 樱花。 How to go? 安康山位于清迈以北的芳县(Amphoe Fang)，距 离清迈市区160 公里。需先从清迈坐车到芳县，然后转 坐双条车上山。每人60铢，但是需要等车坐满人才出 发。也可以包车，一辆车1000到1500铢，车技不错的朋 友也可以按照谷歌地图导航直接自驾进山。 3、清迈 Khun Wang 坤旺农业研究中心 Khun Wang Royal Project Development Center 因他农山上也有樱花，种在山上的坤旺皇家农业 发展中心(Khun Wang Royal Project Development Center)。这里海拔1300多米，樱花树主要集中在农业发展 中心内的花卉区。道路两旁的樱花树交织在一起，形成 一条唯美的樱花隧道，穿越其中，非常浪漫! 除了看樱花，还可以在农业发展中心观赏到其他 的各种热带花卉，也可以吃到山上种植的新鲜有机蔬 果。游客也可以在农业中心内露营，这里提供帐篷出 租。 另外，因他农山兜兰保育中心位于坤旺农业研究 中心的同一条路上。这里除了培育兜兰(又称拖鞋兰) 外，也栽种了大量的樱花树。 How to go? 自驾车导航去，途径108和1013号公路。也可以先 从清迈坐汽车到宗通县(Chom Thong)，然后再包双条车 前往。

拉查帕皇家花园 Royal Park Rajapruek 拉查帕皇家花园位于素贴山以南，靠近夜间动物园 和来康佛寺，这是当地人为泰皇九世普密蓬国王修建的皇 家园林，占地面积广，花卉品种多，展出的花卉包括泰国 兰花、中国杜鹃花、不丹蓝罂粟、荷兰郁金香等，除了多 个冬季花卉培育馆以外，还有数十座各个国家的主题展 馆。 清迈最大的兰花农场 Sai Nam Phung Orchid 位于湄林度假区的兰花农场每天都在接待来自全世 界的游客参观泰国兰花，这里的兰花品种多，并且设有兰 花纪念品商场。旅行者可以花上半个到一个小时左右时间 游览，建议提前了解花期，才能看到不同品种和颜色的兰 花竞相开放。 蒲屏行宫 Bhubing Palace 该行宫于1962年修建完工，每年一月至三月都会陆 续有皇室成员前来休假避暑，每当皇室成员不在这里居住 的时候，行宫便会作为旅游景点对外开放，游客可以按照 指示牌游览参观，性格行宫为泰式建筑，周边种满了鲜花 和珍稀植物，每年冬天直到隔年二月，百花盛开，美不胜 收。 诗丽吉皇后植物园 Queen Sirikit Botanical Gardens 诗丽吉皇后植物园位于湄林度假区，虽然去的路途 有点远，但票价便宜，适合老年人和带小孩家庭度假休闲 观光。有空中走廊观景台，还有大型花卉培育玻璃房。

（两人份）青木瓜200克、豇豆50克、鱼露2 汤匙、泰国椰子糖1汤匙、柠檬汁1汤匙、番茄2 颗、虾米1汤匙、花生两汤匙、泰国小辣椒4颗、 泰国小蒜4瓣儿
做法
1.准备食材：青木瓜切丝、豇豆条切段、番茄 各切4瓣儿、花生米炒香备用。 2.用较大的石臼或者木臼来舂，先把蒜倒进去 舂碎，其次倒入小辣椒舂至裂开，然后倒入豇 豆，搅拌舂均匀。之后加入调料椰子糖、鱼露和 柠檬汁，舂搅均匀后倒入番茄，继续轻轻舂，另 一只手需要用勺子一直帮助搅拌。 3.加入青木瓜丝继续舂搅，然后放入虾米，轻 轻舂搅均匀后装盘，撒上炒过的花生点缀。
Tip 1.食材选择是关键，椰子糖、蒜一定要用泰国特 有的，否则口感欠佳。 2.柠檬汁选用东南亚鲜青柠檬汁比勾兑柠檬 汁要好。 3.泰国青木瓜沙拉有多种口味，例如腌鱼酱 味、腌蟹味，其次根据地域划分还有泰国口味和 老挝口味，让你想象不到的还有舂水果、舂米 线、舂午餐肉等五花八门的味道。

清迈唐人 街的年味 大家习惯称之为“唐人街”的地方，是清迈龙眼达叻市场。当地人之 间不太有谁说那是唐人街，只是旅游的人来多了之后，游客称之为唐人街。 龙眼达叻市场一百年前是清迈城主的龙眼园，最早期的外国人从滨河乘船来 到清迈谋生，大部分寄居在滨河两岸，其中也包括了中国人。 中国人信神、信命，也信天地。我们很难想象这些老华人在他们那个 年代都经历了何种苦难，但看着坐落在最繁华街区的“武庙”和遥望滨河 的“本头古庙”，不经叫人感慨华人化解苦难的无奈，同时我也能体会到华 人对安稳生活的向往和坚持。 虽然这里被游客称为唐人街，但这里不只有华人，还有许多印度裔、 缅甸裔，东南亚和欧美等其他国家的商贩后裔，大家在此从事各式各样的商 业往来。当你来到龙眼达叻市场的时候，能感受到浓浓的中国城气息，但吃 到的美食确是五花八门，各个国家的都有。有印度甩饼、缅甸米粉，还有中 国的萝卜糕和炸油条等。这里有来自各国的便宜生活用品，还有清迈最道地 的土特产和地方特色，例如香茅草肉肠、炸猪皮和青辣椒酱等。 春节又要到了，原本到处都是“中国红”的唐人街变得更加喜庆，红 绸子、红灯笼和那原本就有的红招牌遥相呼应。武庙堂前来往的香客也越来 越多，来的人不仅是华人，还有许多泰国人和其他国家的朝拜者。 阿嫲拄着拐杖步履蹒跚的踏进正殿，捋一捋满头银丝，阿妹把准备好 的香烛递给阿嫲，阿嫲口若悬河的和观音娘娘汇报家事。据说，当年要建华 人庙并不容易，不论华人做多少善事都屡屡受阻，不过也应了那句话，皇天 不负有心人，华人的信仰终有所托。
