“I was born, live and work in Chiang Mai. As a local, I feel bound to the relaxed Northern Thai lifestyle and the charming culture of the Old Quarter and bustling riverside port. I thoroughly recommend visitors to stay and spend their vacation in the Old Town, a neighbourhood where nobody seems to be in a hurry. Perhaps the best activity should be exploring and sampling the local street food and restaurants. Aroon Rai is a great little place for local recipes. Also try the Good View Bar and Restaurant, which is a great venue for delicious food, live music and an evening out overlooking the lovely Ping River. For those of you who like trekking, the mountains and rainforest at Doi Inthanon is an absolute must. “Have fun and enjoy Chiang Mai!”

4 Must See Markets in Chiang Mai
The Thai marketplace is a hub of activity, a meeting place, a source of life for the community. It’s where the city wakes up; where breakfasts, lunches and dinners are planned; where the economy of any neighbourhood can be measured. Visitors to Chiang Mai are invariably drawn to the colourful fresh markets to sample, savour and photograph the plethora of fruits, vegetables, flowers, meats and unidentified frying objects. This is a chance for you to see which fruits are in season, to taste some local flavours, and to get chatting with the hundreds of vendors who get up before dawn every day to bring us some freshness from the fields.
28
29
If you would like to visit a bustling fresh market in Chiang Mai, here are four you should not miss.
1. Kad Luang
Everyone in Chiang Mai knows Kad Luang (Big Market). Even though we live in an era of supermarkets and shopping centers, the main market is still the centre of town. There are two major markets in the Kad Luang area, Warorot Market and Ton Lamyai Market, and both are more than a hundred years old. In the small alleys around the stalls, you’ll find hundreds of shops selling fabrics, clothes, tools, toys, you name it. This is the old Chinatown neighbourhood of the city, and you will surely appreciate the kindness and liveliness of the merchants and local customers as they haggle and interact.
When to go: Kad Luang is a 24-hour market and especially busy at night and on weekends. In the evening, the flower stalls open, making for yet another photo opp.
Don’t miss: • Lanna accessories on 1st floor, Ton Lamyai Market • Local dresses, mauhom shirts and sarongs on 2nd Floor, Warorot Market • Hilltribe products and souvenirs at Lao Jow Alley • The flower market alongside the Ping River 30
2. Sompetch Market (Ming Muang)
This market, situated along the east side of the moat, is 70 years old. It is divided in two: Sompetch Market, just to the north, and Ming Muang Market on Moon Muang Soi 6. The charm of Sompetch and Ming Muang markets is being able to wander along the old backstreets with their traditional wooden houses. Best things to shop for at the stalls here are fresh seafood, fried beans, crackers, fruit juices with yogurt, fruits and vegetables, as well as local herbs and spices.
When to go: Open from morning to evening, the most photogenic time would be at dawn when Buddhist monks walk round collecting alms. From early evening till late at night, you can try hot street food in the open-air.
Don’t miss: • Watch locals offering food to the monks early in the morning, then hire a rickshaw driver to take you on a tour of the backstreets. • Shop for and learn about herbs and local vegetables from the English-speaking merchants. • Walking Street at Moon Muang Soi 6 has street food and snacks, bakeries and coffee shops.
31
3. Chiang Mai Gate
Located at the southern gate to the city on the moat, Pratoo Chiang Mai hosts an interesting market. This is one of the most colourful morning scenes as local people go about their daily chores. You’ll see hundreds of vendors, customers and rickshaw riders congregate for tea and buns, coffee and cake, noodles and juice, starting from about 6am. This market is well known for wok-fried and other cooked foods, particularly local fare such as spicy sausage, fried pork, spicy minced meat salad, curries and spicy salads. You can also buy pork, fish, vegetables and fruits, as well as fast food such as noodle soup and rice porridge with pork. The highlight is the small alley behind the market (Phra Pokklao Soi 2) where you can find many forest products from the mountains for sale on the roadside. For those who prefer a long lie in the morning, you can also visit this market in the evening: it has a small night market from 4pm until midnight.
When to go: Early morning. If not, 4pm till midnight.
Don’t miss: • Roadside market on Phra Pokklao Road, Soi 2. • Sample some Lanna spicy sausage, with fried pork, spicy sauce (nam prik noom) and hot sticky rice. • Night market with street food. Try anything barbecued.
32
4. Chang Phuak Market
On the north side of the moat is a row of street stalls well known to foreign tourists because of their prevalence on TV shows. Perhaps the most popular dish here is Stewed Pork Leg on Rice. At least three stalls sell this, but you always see a queue of visitors lining up at the Coca Suki diner. Busy either at morning or night, Chiang Phuak Market also has shops selling desserts, grilled meatballs, fresh fruit and smoothies. Recommended hot dishes include grilled fish, chili paste with steamed vegetables, fried pork with sticky rice, and noodles with pork balls.
When to go: Early morning, and late afternoon until late at night
Don’t miss: • Early morning market and Buddhist monks receiving alms • Celebrity-style street stall chefs perform for the cameras while cooking on woks
KADLUANG MARKET
SOMPETCH MARKET(MING MUANG)
CHIANGMAI GATE MARKET
CHANG PHUAK MARKET

Nightlife
in Chiang Mai
After a hard day’s touring around the Buddhist temples, tasting the spicy offerings at street stalls, and taking in all the sights, you gotta reward yourself with a night on the town. Soaking up the nightlife is a big part of the holiday for a lot of us, but when you’re in a strange city how do you know which places are best, safest, and not a commercial rip-off? In Chiang Mai, there are many choices if you wanna get down and boogie or listen to live music over a few beers. Night owls – come with me!
36
1. Down by the River
One of the most popular venues for decades has been The Riverside. Opened in 1984 by a Dutch family, this is an iconic restaurant-bar-live music scene which seems to suit everyone. It is situated in the neighbourhood known as Wat Kate on the east bank of the River Ping, just a short walk from Thapae Road over the Nawarat Bridge. It’s a great atmospheric place for dinner with friends from twilight until midnight. Many rival bars and restaurants have opened in Wat Kate over the years, following on the tails of The Riverside’s success. One colourful carnavalesque venue that brings in trendy locals is Good View on Charoenraj Road. It’s bouncy and busy at weekends and serves everything from Thai to Western to Japanese cuisine, has live music every night, and usually runs a promotion on beers or cocktails. Other cool places to look out for include Deck 1 and Khua Lek. Or you can take a dinner cruise along the Ping River (book at The Riverside Bar), costing from just 350 baht per person. On the opposite side of the river is Chinatown, a.k.a. Warorot Market. Here you can shop and eat till late at night. Look out for stalls with fruit and flowers, BBQ pork and chicken, sticky rice, Thai vermicelli, and loads of sweet desserts.
37
38
39
2. Night Bazaar
This bustling street is one of the most famous areas for tourists in the whole of Thailand. The night market opens fully at 6pm and is wall to wall with stalls selling everything from soccer shirts to silks, splendid woodcarvings to 50 baht souvenirs. But you can also find a great number of outdoor plazas where you can sit and sup beers and whiskey till late. There’s food courts, German beer bars, Indian restaurants, Indian tailors, an Iraqi restaurant, McDonalds, wine bars, martini bars, Irish pubs and more. Try Anusarn Market for a bit of everything. As for restaurants, we would like to recommend Chez Marco, the River Market, Rock Me Burger and Street Pizza. For beers and music, try Hard Rock CafÊ, Thapae East, and the Bus Bar on the Ping River waterfront.
40
41
3. Nimmanhaemin
This West End area is classy and special, popular with everyone from Chinese tourists to Bangkok visitors to local university students. Among the hotels, guest houses, international restaurants, pubs, bars, souvenir shops and shopping centers is a network of small lanes, or soi, where you can wander around and discover ice-cream parlours, coffee shops and craft stores. High-end shoppers look out for One Nimman, Think Park, Nimman Soi 1, and the giant Maya shopping centre. For those who prefer just to hang out and people-watch, find a cafĂŠ and take a seat. You can sample some northern Thai coffees, craft beers, imported wines, Spanish tapas, fresh salads, Italian cuisine and much more. At night, things get jiggy at Warm-Up, Infinity and the Maya rooftop bar.

DOWN BY THE RIVER
NIGHT BAZAAR
44
NIMMANHAEMIN

19th National Elephant Day in Thailand Historically, the elephant has had a long association with Thailand. Its strength, power, ponderous dignity and majesty have ensured it a special place in the hearts of Thai people for many centuries. Long ago, when Thai kings waged war against invading enemies, it was the elephant which provided the front-line advance. Nowadays, the elephant plays an important role in tourism. They have adjusted well to being the centre of admiration and take visitors for rides atop their massive backs or even further afield on a trekking expedition.
To honor this most gentle, yet powerful, of animals, National Thai Elephant Day is being hosted at the Maesa Elephant Camp (10km along the Mae Rim- Samoeng Road) on 13th March. Admission to the camp (from 12 noon onwards) is free.
