Thai people love going to temples on Buddhist holidays and during festivals to make merit and pray for luck, prosperity and the health of their loved ones. Visitors to Thailand will invariably feel at ease in the tranquil environment of a temple, and many will appreciate the outstanding architecture and murals. 10

Local talk Nawapon Korjai Owner of White Garden Restaurant and Ma Maision furniture shop
“I’m actually from Chiang Rai, but I moved to Chiang Mai in 1980 to work in an office, and ended up starting my own business. For me, Chiang Mai is a perfect place, both for living and for visiting. “If you wish to explore the ‘real’ Chiang Mai, I suggest heading to the outskirts of town, to places such as Maejo or Mae Tha in Lamphun. You’ll discover lots of fresh vegetables, fruits, local dishes and interesting livelihoods. If you want to try some Northern Thai cuisine, I think a great choice is Huen Jai Yong, which is on the Old San Kamphaeng Road about 30 minutes from downtown. You can combine a visit there with a trip to Mae Kampong, which is a paradise of nature with little homestays, waterfalls and tea plantations.”

Weekend getaway? Chiang Dao &
the Thai Burmese border If you enjoy a good road trip and want to get out of the city for a day or two, the winding rustic road up to the Thai-Myanmar border is a pleasant drive with lots of scenic spots and interesting cultural sites along the way. You can picnic among nature alongside mountain streams, and find lots of good overnight hotel options in the quaint town of Chiang Dao.
32
33
Chiang Dao district is not only the site of the famous karst mountain of Doi Luang Chiang Dao, but also a perfect spot not too far from Chiang Mai where you can relish the joys of nature. It has a countryside purity that has not been affected by too much tourism. Much of the topography and plants on Doi Luang are Subalpine, including pine forests and an array of flora. This huge cliff-like promontory is also significant as the source of the Ping River, the main waterway of Chiang Mai province. Chiang Dao district hosts farming communities and is peppered with green paddy fields. This is most certainly an ideal place for encountering rural lifestyles and meeting friendly country folks. 34
Travelling Chiang Dao is approximately one hour to 90 minutes (90 kilometres) north of Chiang Mai city centre. Drive out (or take a bus) on the Chotana Road, which turns into Highway 107. About 40km north, the valley turns tropical and lush, all the way to Chiang Dao. Where are we going? Although this is rainy season and Doi Luang Chiang Dao National Park is closed (to conserve the growth of the ecosystem), you can see Doi Luang from the foothills and take photos. In the morning, you will see the mist and clouds covering the top of this mountain. In the afternoon, Doi Luang is clearly
visible, while the sunset makes the most romantic and spectacular scene. Chiang Dao Cave is another place you should not miss. This is one of the most stunning caves you will ever see, with gorgeous stalactites and stalagmites in many large and spacious caverns. The highlight is the temple at the mouth of the cave with Burmese art stucco and wooden Buddha images carved in an exquisite Burmese style. In addition, around Chiang Dao district you will come across many small villages. Each has its own unique natural or cultural splendor. Some interesting places for travelers include: Pong Ang natural hot spring; Wat Tham Muang Na; Yunnanese restaurants; the Royal Project on the top of the mountain; tea plantations; the water cave (Nam Ok Hoo); and Kiew Pha Wok Thai-Myanmar Check Point.
35
From Chiang Dao to the border From Chiang Dao, drive north on Highway 107 for a few miles, then turn left when you see the sign for Wiang Haeng (Highway 1322). This winding rustic road takes you back in time: to the Siamese frontier and the overland mule routes to and from the Lanna Kingdom and Muang Nai (Shan State of Myanmar). This district has a long history, and you can find several ancient temples where Thai, Shan and Burmese cultures have assimilated. A suggestion would be to look out for the commanding temple of Wat Saen Hai, which is a shrine to King Naresuan the Great, a national Thai hero who fought many wars with Burma in this area. Two other fascinating temples – Wat Muang Pok and Wat Sam Phu – follow soon after on Route 1322. An alternative to Wieng Haeng and the Burmese border is to continue north on Highway 107 to the town of Fang. This district is renowned for agriculture, winter fruits and vegetables, and attractions such as the Angkhang Royal Project, Fang Hot Spring and Doi Pha Hom Pok mountain. If you follow the highway to the end you’ll get to the small dusty black market trade town of Mae Ai, which marks the border with Myanmar. After you have crossed the bridge to Burma (check your visa first to make sure you can come back across into Thailand!!!), you can browse the marketplaces which are teeming with goods imported from Myanmar and China. Other sites to add to your itinerary could be: Hom Phandin Vineyard; the Royal Project; Wat Kruba Sitthi temple; and the 360-degree viewpoint from Doi Lang on a hill overlooking the border.
UNSEEN
“Now everyone can fly.” That’s the slogan of Air Asia, as it unveils economical flights to more and more destinations. One of those is Ubon Ratchathani, one of the “big four” cities in Northeast Thailand, better known as Isarn. (The other three are Khon Kaen, Korat and Udon Thani.) Situated on the Mun River in the Mekong Basin, the charming region of Ubon Ratchathani sees the sunrise before the rest of us in Thailand as it is the easternmost province in the kingdom.
Wat Maha Wanaram

It is a royally appointed temple, built in 1807. Devotees believe that anyone who pays homage to Phra Jao Yai In Plang will see their wish come true. As a bonus, if you arrive at the right time you can observe Ubon Ratchathani’s famous candlemakers at work; they prepare all the candles for the delightful Ubon Candle Festival, which is held annually, usually in early July. 38
Wat Sirindhorn Wararam
Chong Mek, Sirindhorn District, Ubon Ratchathani 34350 Wat Sirindhorn Wararam Phu Phrao is located 100 kilometres from Ubon Ratchathani town on a high hill overlooking the Thai-Lao border. The temple is meant to symbolise the holy site of Mount Kailash in Tibet. The highlight of this Thai temple is the green glowing image that emanates from the “wishing tree” on one of the gorgeous murals on the rear wall. The best time to visit and photograph is between 6pm and 8pm to get the full glow effect.
Pattaya Noi
Khan Rai, Sirindhorn District, Ubon Ratchathani 34350 Pattaya Noi Beach, sometimes called the “South East Sea”, is located near the reservoir of Sirindhorn Dam on Highway 217 (Sathitnimankan Road) in the district of Warin Chamrap. It’s in the western part of the province, 62km from Ubon. The area around the reservoir is sandy; it’s an ideal spot for a picnic and a day of swimming and fun. It also has lots of eateries and facilities for tourists.

Ban Chi Thuan is not far from the city, maybe half an hour by car. This place is well known because of the point in the river where it flows back upon itself and heads upstream. Legend says that this was a Khmer stronghold once upon a time, but after they had migrated, Phra Pathumwongsa, the Governor of Ubon, assigned Thao Nghon Kham and 150 families to travel up the river to found a new city in the mid-to-late 18th century AD. They arrived at the site which is now Non Lamduan Chang and established a town upon the ruins of the old Khmer city.
“ Isarn’s Vietnamese Soup
Did you know that parts of Thailand were once invaded and settled by the Vietnamese? One of their legacies is the delicious bowl of Vietnamese noodle soup known as khao piek sen. Originally the dish was known by its Vietnamese name, jao. Nowadays it is part of the national cuisine of Vietnam, Laos and many parts of northeastern Thailand. The noodle is a cloudy white colour before it is boiled, but becomes clear after. Adding pork bone helps to thicken up the soup. Also known as kuey-jab yuan, it is best served with pork, sausage, spring onion, coriander and fried shallots.

A range of programmes (up to 500 baht for an experienced gamer, playing for 40 minutes) are available: everything from the adrenalin of action games to the tranquil feeling of floating underwater, from space travel to cartoons. VR Café has a very affordable menu with spring rolls, wraps and good spicy Thai curries. Richards says he hopes to bring a French touch to the menu with French fusion cuisine offered too.

Tom Yum Goong
